A Message from the

President

Dear Alumni of Catholic Central, friends, and benefactors of Detroit Catholic Central, One of the many blessings at Catholic Central is that we are a community which reveres and treasures the past while at the same time is constantly changing and adapting in order to meet the needs of our current Men of Catholic Central and generations to come. One can thus make two claims about our current student body: they cherish, maintain, and enjoy traditions such as Boys’ Bowl and DRIVE, enjoying the same spirit that generations of Shamrocks experienced before them. At the same time, their education has evolved as technology has evolved: digital texts on iPads have replaced traditional (and heavy!) books, assignments are turned into teachers electronically, and grades are posted so that their parents have access to them on their phones, tablets, laptops, and computers. Live skits have been replaced by hi-tech videos produced by the students who often use drones to film and new software to edit the final product. New clubs are forming and expanding on a regular basis. In the previous issue, we featured the growth of our robotics teams. This issue features the birth and growth of the Finance Club, where students learn how to invest in a moral and responsible way. Their efforts will not only benefit them down the road, but also help provide additional tuition assistance for families of modest incomes who are interested in Catholic Central. You will also find in this issue the amazing story of one of our newest students, freshman Caleb White ’20, who formed his own foundation in order to help young people who suffer the most in our beloved city of Detroit. Caleb’s efforts mirror so many other ways that the Men of CC help the community at large: through their generosity to the Missions, the annual canned food drive and the annual toy drive and dress down days, which benefit many needy causes throughout the year. Crain’s of Detroit recently featured an article about CC being the recipient of the Sparky Anderson Outstanding Award for Youth in Philanthropy, as CC has raised more than $137,000 over the years for a Boys’ Bowl event, “The Shamrock Shuffle.” We realize that as Christians, it is not just a good idea to be generous when we have time and think of it, but that our faith obligates us to be consistently concerned for those around us who suffer, and to do what we can for them. Finally, I’d like to acknowledge the selfless service of my Basilian confrère Father Ray Paramo, who not only celebrates his 50th anniversary of ordination to the priesthood this year, but also gives all of the CC community reason to celebrate: all fifty years of his ordained ministry have been spent here at Catholic Central. Many of our alumni had Fr. Paramo as a teacher for either science or theology (indeed they complement each other!). He continues to serve CC as editor of this fine publication, the Aluminator. As we approach the holiest season of the year where we celebrate the birth of Christ, let us make the conscious decision to prepare ourselves for His coming in the Holy Season of Advent. Mary Alma Mater, inspire us evermore!

Fr. John B. Huber, C.S.B., Ed.D. President

Alumnus Detroit Regional Bishop Michael Byrnes Named by Pope Francis as Coadjutor Archbishop of Agana in U.S. Territory of Guam Originally published on the aod.org website - by Joe Kohn, Director of Public Relations

Bishop Michael J. Byrnes ‘76, who has been serving as a regional bishop in the Archdiocese of Detroit since his ordination as a bishop in May 2011, was named by Pope Francis to be the Coadjutor Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Agana, the archdiocese in the U.S. territory of Guam in the South Pacific. Bishop Byrnes will lead the diocese in the absence of Archbishop Anthony Sablan Apuron, OFMCap., who in June was relieved by the Vatican of his pastoral and administrative authority. The archdiocese had been led in the interim by apostolic administrator Archbishop Savio Hon Tai Fai, SDB. Bishop Byrnes will be given the full pastoral responsibility and administrative authority in the archdiocese. Guam is an island of 210 square miles situated north of Australia, south of Japan, and east of the Philippines. Approximately 80 percent of the territory’s 165,000 inhabitants are Catholic.

“I am humbled by the Holy Father’s decision to entrust the Archdiocese of Agana to my pastoral care,” said Bishop Byrnes. “The great spiritual writer, Blessed Columba Marmion, wrote, ‘The task of the priest is to give Jesus to the world.’ That is what I have endeavored to do as an auxiliary bishop here in Detroit, and I look forward to giving Jesus to the thousands of people who live in the island of Guam. I have learned that the Catholic faith has long been embraced on the island, and the faith of the people is rooted in a rich history of devotion to Jesus and to His Blessed Mother. At the same time, there are always challenges to face. With my brother priests and deacons, with the catechists and other pastoral workers, and above all with the spiritual gifts of the People of God, I trust we will persevere in faith, hope and love, and will exercise the ‘wisdom from above’ (James 3:17) to meet these challenges.”

Michael Jude Byrnes was born in 1958 in Detroit to Patrick and Marie Byrnes. He grew up in Detroit, where he attended Edison Elementary School (1963-64), St. Mary of Redford Elementary and Junior High (1965-72), and Detroit Catholic Central High School (1972-76). He then attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology in 1979. Until August 1981, he served as a lab assistant in the department of biological chemistry in the University of Michigan Medical School while also serving as a part-time campus minister. Archbishop-designate Byrnes continued as a campus minister through University Christian Outreach, which serves the campuses of the University of Michigan and Eastern Michigan University, and worked in that capacity until 1985. Active in the Charismatic Renewal movement, he served as office manager for the outreach group Servant Ministries in Ann Arbor from 1985 until 1990. He entered formation at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit in 1990, where he later earned a Master of Divinity degree and a Master of Arts degree with a concentration in Scripture. He was ordained May 25, 1996, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit by then-archbishop Cardinal Adam Maida.

STUDENT

PROFILE

Getting To Know Current CC Students

Profile: Caleb White ’20 Young Philanthropist Information taken from http://www.calebwhiteproject.com

Caleb White ’20 is a freshman at Detroit Catholic Central High School. At six years old, Caleb saw a man sleeping on the side of the road and knew he had to help. For the past eight years he has dedicated his life to doing just that! Caleb founded the Caleb White Project (CWP) and was named America’s Top Youth Volunteer by Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for his work with the homeless and underprivileged in Detroit. The Caleb White Project is a two-fold non-profit. They help the homeless and less fortunate living in and around Detroit, and Caleb White ’20 they are also very passionate about youth leadership and getting youth involved in volunteerism. There are four students from Catholic Central on the advisory board at the CWP: Ben Kamali ’18, Brendin Yatooma ’20, Colin Stewart ’19, and Caleb. The Caleb White Project connects groups of people who wouldn’t normally connect: young people from the suburbs and the homeless. Most of the CWP projects are designed to encourage new relationships between the two groups. While there are many big projects to get involved with, the board members all agree that their favorite project is Game Night at the Shelter. This was started when Caleb learned that kids living in shelters have a strict curfew of 4:30 pm. He realized that this eliminates a huge part of their childhood. They couldn’t join sports, go to a friend’s house, or have a friend sleep over. So, he decided to take the friends to them. Now, once a month, the Caleb White Project takes pizza, pop, board games, and friends down to the shelter to spend a Saturday night playing games and having fun. Students looking for a way to get involved and impact the lives of others should reach out to Caleb or a CWP board member to ask how they can volunteer. Projects include the Homeless Project, Impacting by Backpacking, Game Night at the Shelter, Global Youth Service Day, Shelter Cleanup, and The Empowerment Plan. Visit www.calebwhiteproject.com for more information on all upcoming events.

Catholic Central Recognized on National Philanthropy Day Over the years, Catholic Central has raised numerous funds for various charities, each year collecting between $40,000 and $50,000. One such charity which benefits annually is Make-A-Wish Michigan. Each year during Boys’ Bowl week, CC students and faculty take part in the “Shamrock Shuffle,” a 1.5 mile run that raises money for Make-A-Wish Michigan (MAWM) by having each runner collect pledges from other students, faculty, staff, parents, neighbors, and friends. For more than 20 years, the “Shamrock Shuffle” has become one of the most gratifying events of the school year, raising nearly $137,000 for Make-A-Wish Michigan and helping to grant life-changing wishes to Michigan kids. The event, started by former CC teacher Sherry Lefforge and currently organized by CC teacher Steve Lemieux, raised approximately $9,000 in 2016 alone. CC was named a Make-A-Wish Michigan Leader in Joy in 2014. On November 10, 2016, at the annual National Philanthropy Dinner hosted by the Greater Detroit Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Detroit

Catholic Central High School was the recipient of the Sparky Anderson Award for Youth in Philanthropy. CC was nominated by Make-A-Wish Michigan. “The Sparky Anderson Award for Youth in Philanthropy was instituted as a way to recognize and reward philanthropic young people and to educate youths about the importance of helping and giving. When children are personally involved and actively engaged in a project, their ‘hands-on’ experience greatly enhances the learning experience. The purpose of the youth award is three-fold: first, to thank students for volunteering their time and energy to a particular project; second, as an inspiration to encourage other children to become involved in fundraising activities by following the example of the winners; and third, to give public recognition to youths and their philanthropic projects.” Nicholas Gessler ’17 and Chintan Maheshwari ’18 accepted the award on behalf of the school.

upon us, I thought it appropriate to relate a short story about “Giving.” At CC’s Open House, November 6, 2016, I found myself and several dozen other alums, priests, administrators, teachers, students, Mothers’ Club volunteers, and CC board members who were given the “Gift” of seeing approximately 1,150 young men and their families tour CC, visiting classrooms, interacting with various teachers and current students, and reviewing the myriad of student activities, clubs, and athletic teams available for their participation, education, and success. It was a sight to see! But the real “Gift” I soon realized was my brief conversation with a grandmother and grandfather who had brought their grandson to CC that day. We chatted over cookies and coffee as she related that, “My dream is and has always been to ensure that my grandson receives a proper, spiritual, Catholic Education here at Catholic Central High School. I have eagerly awaited this day.”

That grandmother’s statement to me literally brought me to tears (she cried, too). Consider the incredible “Gift” she is giving her grandson. What a proper path for him to start down the road of Life. All of us Alumni should take a private moment to reflect upon the parents, the aunt or uncle, the grandfather or grandmother, or whoever set us on our path at Catholic Central High School. We should be enormously grateful for the sacrifices, physical, financial, and emotional, which were made by others to our great benefit. I humbly ask that each of you, CC Brothers of mine, consider how you might now employ your own time, talent, or treasure to provide the gift of a Catholic Central education to the young men who follow us, whether to your own son or the son of another. God bless all of us in this coming Christmas season. Keep us safe and sound and in God’s mercy this Christmas. My best regards and best wishes to all of you.

2016 CC Law Day: CC Students and Alumni

The Hon. Timothy Kenny addresses CC students, judges, and lawyers.

The 15th Annual Detroit Catholic Central High School Law Day took place on Thursday, November 10, 2016. This great opportunity took 40 CC seniors interested in law into the courtrooms of the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice and Theodore Levin Courthouse to experience the day in the life of a lawyer and judge. Accompanied by CC teachers Craig McMichael ’01 and Nick Aiello ’06, the students experienced trial courtroom procedures and gained valuable in-school and out-of-school insights regarding a career path in law. The Third Circuit Court is the largest circuit court in Michigan, with 58 judges and three operating divisions. The Third Circuit Court has jurisdiction over civil, criminal, and family matters arising in Wayne County. The National Center for State Courts has cited the Third Circuit Court as one of the model urban courts in the United States for case flow management and the timely disposition of the Court’s docket. A big “thank you” goes out to the Hon. Richard Hathaway ’68, Hon. Timothy Kenny (father of Christopher ’98), Hon. Sean Cox ’75, and Mr. Chuck Bullock ’87 for organizing and hosting the day, as well as to the many CC judges and lawyers (listed below) who took time out of their busy schedules to give back to their brothers at CC. Subject: Lost Class Ring from 1976 Classmate One thing you can count on at a reunion gathering is stories. These stories come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and with a wide variety of selective memories. Regardless, these stories are usually supported with smiles, laughter, high-fives, and an occasional shake of the head. That being said, from time to time, you hear a story that makes you do all the previously mentioned and then some. David Beger ’76 shared one of these great stories at his 40th Reunion. It relates to his lost class ring that was found and returned to him many years later. In October of 2015, David’s wife received a phone call from the Catholic Central Alumni Relations Office. She was informed that David’s class ring had been found. Initially, there was a little difficulty in determining whose class ring it was since there are a few classmates in the Class of ’76 with the initials “DB.” However, David is the only one with the middle initial “E,” which could be made out inside the ring. As the story goes, the ring was found in the drawer of a secretary who was retiring from a metro-Detroit parish in Troy, Michigan. How long the ring had been in that secretary’s drawer is unknown. David later came to find out from his brother and sister-in-law that he was in that church only twice: once, in 1996 for his niece’s baptism, and secondly, in 1998 for his nephew’s baptism. David did not remember losing his ring in the church and always thought he had lost it somewhere at home or stuck it in an old suit. Even the “I gave it to an old girlfriend who threw it in a lake” story (never happened to David) was laughed about. David credits his mother in finding the ring since she was a big believer in St. Anthony, the Finder of the Lost. David’s mother passed away in April of 2015, and as he stated, “Maybe she put in a word with St. Anthony and helped recover my ring in October 2015.” David also stated, “The ring did not look too worse for wear, but I was informed by the Alumni Department that Jostens provides service for the lifetime of any Catholic Central class ring. The ring has since been resized and cleaned up and looks better than new!” Good story!

10th Annual

Athletic Hall of Fame The Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony is an annual event at Catholic Central. We honor our former athletes, coaches, mentors, and volunteers for the profound contributions they have made to the tradition of excellence of Catholic Central athletics. Inductees are recognized through a special ceremony during the annual Gerry Di Ponio ’65 Memorial Boys’ Bowl Mass and Breakfast, which took place this year on Sunday, October 16, 2016. Inductees were also introduced at halftime of the 72nd Boys’ Bowl Game against DeLaSalle. CC won the game 17-7. Congratulations to our 2016 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees! It was great having you back home at Catholic Central to receive the well-deserved recognition as our newest Athletic Hall of Fame members. Thank you to all inductees and their families, especially those who traveled great distances to be here. We enjoyed the stories and the CC folklore you shared over the weekend.

One of the co-founders of the CC Ski Team, Fr. John Wheeler, C.S.B. ’57, led the team to a place among the elite teams in the state during his 16 years as coach. Father’s teams were State runners-up three times and won two Regional and two League Championships. Father also co-founded the CC Soccer program in 1979 and served as moderator, bus driver, and chaplain to the soccer teams from 1979-1989. Since graduating from CC, Fr. Wheeler has served CC tirelessly as priest, teacher, coach, and Director of the Alumni Glee Club and continues to be a great supporter of CC athletics and alumni activities. The athletic accomplishments of Dennis Spalla ’59 rank among the best in CC’s long line of great student-athletes. Beginning with a boxing championship, Denny earned All-State honors in Football, was the starting guard on the Basketball team, sprinted on the Track team, and starred on the CC Baseball team. His CC career culminated in being selected as winner of the Fr. James Whelan Award winner in 1959. Denny accepted a baseball scholarship to the University of Michigan, where he played centerfield, made All-Big Ten, and helped lead Michigan to the 1961 Big Ten Baseball Championship and the 1962 NCAA National Baseball Championship. Rick Jones ’71 is considered by many Shamrock Wrestling enthusiasts as one of the toughest, most hard-nosed, and most physical of our State Champions and All-Americans. Under Rick’s leadership, Catholic Central won three consecutive Class A team state titles in 1969, 1970, and 1971. Jones won individual state titles in 1970 and 1971, and earned a scholarship to wrestle at Oklahoma State University. While at Oklahoma State, Rick led the Cowboys to four consecutive Big Eight Conference team titles and three top three finishes at the NCAA Tournament. Rick was a four time Big Eight Conference finalist, winning Big Eight Conference championships in 1973 and 1974.

One of CC’s finest basketball players and athletes, Greg Wendt ’81 was a 3-year Varsity Player who earned All-Catholic, All-Metro, Dream Team All-State, and Catholic School All-American his senior year in 1981. As a Sophomore and Junior, Greg also garnered All-Catholic, All-Metro, and All-State Honors. Greg graduated from CC as the basketball program’s all-time leading scorer, for both his career and a single season. Upon graduation, Greg earned a scholarship to Duke University where he played for 2 seasons before transferring home to the University of Detroit. At U of D, Greg was twice named All-Conference and a team captain before being drafted by the Boston Celtics in 1986. Greg also starred as a CC Baseball player and was a member of the 1979 Baseball State Championship team. Mike Sullivan ’88 was a well-rounded student at Catholic Central, serving as President of the Student Council and a member of the National Honor Society, as well as a multi-sport athlete. He was a member of the Varsity Lacrosse team for three seasons and the Varsity Hockey team for two. As a Lacrosse player, Mike earned All-State honors his Junior and Senior years and was a member of the 1988 Midwest Champion Lacrosse team. After high school Mike went on to play for the University of Notre Dame, where he earned four varsity letters. Mike was a four-year starter for the Irish and was team captain his Senior year. Over his college career Mike tied or broke ten Notre Dame scoring records, finishing his career as Notre Dame’s All-Time leading scorer. One of the greatest basketball teams in CC history, the 1976 Basketball Team finished with a 25-3 record, culminating with both the Catholic League and Class A State Championships. Along the way they set many team records, including most wins in a season, most team points in a season, and most individual points in a season by Mike Prince ’76. Prince also set the new standard for most career points. All-around outstanding performances by Alan Mitchell ’77, Bill Parran ’77, Dan Fitzgerald ’77, Dave Abel ’77, Rick Kaye ’77, Rob Gonzales ’78, and the rest of the squad made this a truly memorable team in the chronicles of CC basketball.

LEGACY SOCIETY The Catholic Central Endowment - Securing Your CC Legacy

Dear Alumni, Building an Endowment is one of the critical tasks for any private educational institution, and Catholic Central is no exception. The escalating costs to construct, enhance, and maintain the physical plant is but one aspect of the financial challenge. Equally important is the ability to attract and retain the very best to join a dedicated faculty which we have always been fortunate to have at CC. The third factor is the essence of CC: to provide the setting for young men who possess the intellectual desire, drive, and work ethic to succeed in the highly competitive but nurturing environment of Catholic Central. For 88 years, Catholic Central has been blessed in its ability to make good on its promise to deliver the Basilian mission of teaching Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge to nearly 20,000 young men in order that they could become contributing members of our Church, country, and society. Each one of us was given the opportunity to become a product of this remarkable institution, and the current student body continues to build on that tradition of excellence. The students’ academic, athletic, fine arts, and extra-curricular activities have consistently exceeded expectations, outperformed other private schools, and made all of us proud. So, what has this to do with Planned Giving? May I suggest you ask yourself three questions. First, do you believe that CC helped to provide a solid foundation to your development as a young man? Second, can you think of a better organization to invest a portion of your hard earned savings for the future development of qualified young men? If you answered yes to the first question and no to the second question, then ask yourself: should I make CC part of my estate/legacy plan? To learn more about how you can make CC part of your estate/legacy plan, contact me for more information. In addition, should you require assistance with your estate/legacy planning, we have a number of CC alumni who would be pleased to assist you. Have a Blessed Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year! Merry Christmas,

Rudy Seichter ’59 Director of Planned Giving rseichter@catholiccentral.net • (248) 596-3845

THE FINANCE CLUB …teach students about finance, the Stock Market, … while raising actual money through the stock market and alumni contributions, which can be used to fund student scholarships Beginnings by Steven Lanasky ’16

In the spring of 2015, the long-discussed club finally had its genesis: with the trust of the administration and the leadership of Mr. Anthony Cornish, Mr. Kevin Griffin ‘96, and Mrs. Amanda Price, the Finance Club had begun. It was not easy—not even in the slightest—as every step of the process was meticulously planned, with every imaginable catastrophe considered and each clause of the constitution revised. Through hard work, plenty of grit, and notable contributions from students and the administration alike, the club was able to have its official opening in January of 2016, with over 100 students attending the inaugural meeting. The Finance Club has a two-pronged approach, which we believe matches Catholic Central’s mission: teach students about finance, the Stock Market, and general business principles while raising actual money through the stock market and alumni contributions, which can be used to fund student scholarships to attend Catholic Central.

Students are afforded the opportunity to participate in panels with industry specialists and business professionals, give stock pitches to the board and the general membership, work on committees in order to plan and organize different aspects of the club (such as the Fundraising Committee or the Annual Finance Club Golf Outing), and round out their knowledge of the business world in a number of other ways. The Club currently has around 80 official members only a year into its existence, and its current holdings are larger than the University of Michigan’s Investment Club, with the goal of growing the club’s current holdings over $100,000. The Finance Club is continuing to do what Catholic Central does best: push the frontier for what a high school can be and break every single expectation before it.

“The DCC finance club greatly changed my views about the stock market and how important it is. This club will greatly impact my future and how I invest in my adult life.” - Mitchell Knedgen ’17

The Present by Michael Collins ’17

In less than a year since its conception in January of 2016, the Finance Club has attracted a very large following not only from students, alumni, and administration, but also many people outside the Catholic Central community. In donations alone, over $4,200 has been raised, contributing to the nearly $20,000 the club has waiting to be invested.

A big part of the club’s mission is to educate students on potential future careers in finance. Several Catholic Central alumni have come in to speak to students. These speakers come from a wide variety of fields, ranging from financial advisors to college students studying business.

The Finance Club is run by six board members. Members participate in meetings by preparing stock pitches and presenting them to the rest of the club. Students discuss the stocks presented and the board members vote on whether or not to invest in the company. It is through this process that students learn responsible investing with hands-on experience and real money in the stock market.

Before the end of the last school year, the Finance Club hosted its first annual golf outing. The outing proved to be a huge success, raising over $7,000. Not only does the Finance Club benefit its members, but it also contributes to the Catholic Central community.

Top Ten Lessons Taught to DCC Finance Club Members by Nathaniel Pascual ’18

Identify Your Financial Goals Whether you’re saving for retirement or your next toy, identify your next goal and determine how you plan to reach that goal. Left: President Mike Collins ’17 starts a club meeting Right: member Luke Brusstar ’20 pitches a stock to the club

Invest for the Long Haul Be prepared to invest in a company for 5, 10, 15, and even 20 years. Understand the Basics Once the year is over, members should be able to understand the information necessary to invest in a company. This information includes elementary topics such as earnings and dividends to more complex topics such as beta and investor sentiment.

Ryan Davis ’17 leads a group discussion about adding a utility company to our portfolio

Diversify Your Investments (But not too much) By effectively spreading investments in different industries and sectors, investors can effectively mitigate risk in their portfolios. Being over-diversified leads to a portfolio performing in line with the market. Do Your Research Be able to understand the basic operations of a possible investment after completing research. Control Your Emotions

Guest Speakers

Be able to identify when previous memories or experiences (both positive and negative) force you to overlook the fundamentals of a possible investment. Expect the Unexpected Understand that the market rarely acts according to common conventions and is prone to bubbles and corrections.

by Ryan Park-Davis ’17

January 27, 2016 John Mizzi talked about 401ks, returns on stocks over time, bonds, and trusts. February 23, 2016 Jerry Mangona spoke about supply and demand, how to negotiate, PE ratios, and the process of dividends. March 2016 Michael Babicz ‘15 talked about opportunities in business, how to get your foot in the door, and how to impress those around you. 24

Understand Your Limits Be able to know when to stop. Overlooking simple needs can lead to financial disaster. Be Open to Criticism (But be able to defend your position) Use comments in order to invest more shrewdly or to develop a stronger argument. You should be able to defend your position when challenged. Look at the Market Look at mutual funds and indexes that match your investment profile to find ideas for new investments.

The Future by Mr. Anthony Cornish, Moderator

The future of our nascent club is filled with hope and enthusiasm. We have our eyes set on some exciting short term events. In the early spring we will be holding an open house that is open to the public, where we will give a behind-the-scenes look at our portfolio, stock picking methodologies, and our philanthropic plans with the endowment that we are creating. At that event we will be seeking out individuals to create a permanent advisory board made up of alumni and community supporters. This board’s job would be to review the club’s holdings and act as a quality control entity, preventing caustic assets from slipping through our notice. Later in the spring, we will be holding our annual golf outing, which is our only major fundraiser. Last year’s outing was an amazing success, and we hope this year’s will be also. Looking out beyond the horizon, this club has the opportunity to make an unprecedented impact on the school and the lives of its students. In just four months last year, we raised almost $20,000. Our goal by the end of this year is to have $50,000. It is not beyond our ability to raise a large amount over the next 5, 10, and 20 years or even longer. I could imagine in 10 years, with growth, dividends, and more fundraising, that we would be managing an endowment of $500,000 or more. With this amount there is almost no limit to what the students can do. We could potentially endow full-ride scholarships.

Members of the ordination class of 1966/67 reunited in Toronto to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Fathers Michael Fallona, C.S.B., Gordon Kennedy, C.S.B., Quentin Johnson, C.S.B., Marvin LaBute, C.S.B., Raymond Paramo, C.S.B., and Bishop Ricardo Ramírez, C.S.B. met for a three-day celebration that included a day trip to Stratford and a visit to Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada. While in Toronto, the Fathers recreated their class photo from 1966 on the steps of the Cardinal Flahiff Basilian Centre. Fr. Raymond Paramo, C.S.B., was ordained on December 10, 1966. He has spent the entire fifty years of his priestly ministry at Catholic Central. He came here in 1967 just after his ordination. While at CC, he has worked with the youth group ministry and taught science, mathematics, and theology. Fr. Paramo served as chairman of the school board of directors after working to establish a new school constitution that admits laymen as directors and set up a president/principal model for the first time. He is currently editor-in-chief for our Aluminator. Next Fall, we will celebrate this milestone with a special event. Details will be announced in the next issue of the Aluminator. Raymond Paramo was born in Houston, Texas, January 14, 1937, the first of seven children of Ramon and Catherine (nee Suarez) Paramo. He moved to a Catholic parochial school two years before high school. This opened the door to the influence of the Basilian Fathers when he went to St. Thomas High School at the invitation of Fr. Murphy. He joined the Basilian Novitiate with seven other St. Thomas classmates at a time when the valedictorian, the football captain, and the student council president could all join a religious community to the admiration of all. He went to the novitiate in Rochester in 1955 and then to St. Basil’s Seminary for some undergraduate work. He graduated from the University of Windsor and then taught at Assumption High School in 1961, where he rebuilt the physics course and restarted the drama club. At St. Basil’s Seminary he studied theology, getting an S. T. B. and a Masters while helping to prepare for the 1967 Theology Symposium in Toronto celebrating the Canadian centennial.

December at Catholic Central by Fr. William Riegel, C.S.B.

In a word, “hectic!” In fact, this semester has been one of many, many activities. Of course, there is the usual academic “push” as we moved towards exams. The fall sport’s program is finished only to initiate the winter one. Homecoming was indeed a moment to celebrate with the Shamrock Shuffle, a great win on the football field, and the evening dance - one to be reminded that our students really do “dress-up good!” The band/orchestra was in full swing with the annual Christmas concert—always a gala of good spirits. And then, there is all that shopping frenzy, gatherings, and endless “holiday” music in the malls and on the radio. In the midst of it all, the Church, as a wise Mother, invites us to focus on the central mystery of Advent/ Christmas. There is perhaps no other season of the church year more beautiful than the poetry of Advent. It’s that time to hear again all the promises that God made to us from the beginning of time. The Advent liturgy literally sings with hope. Cardinal Newman sums up this season: “This, then, is the Advent watch: to be detached from what is present, and to live in what is unseen; to live in the thought of Christ as he came once, and as he will come again; to desire his second coming from our affectionate and grateful remembrance of his first.” As our world seems consumed with “holiday stuff,” Advent demands a quiet heart like that of Mary Alma Mater—she shows us the true meaning, the only meaning of the Incarnation. Our students, from the day they walk through the front doors, know that “Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge” begins and ends in Christ. Every day, each class “incarnates” Christ as it begins with prayer. Many attend the 7:20 am Mass in the chapel. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is celebrated often with many taking advantage of this time to celebrate the Lord’s forgiveness and love for each of them. Monthly, all-school Mass is offered that IS an Incarnation. Christ permeates this place—and the prayers of our students, past and present, are in the very walls themselves! Christmas, the coming of Christ, is not just a yearly moment but happens on a daily basis at CC through the brotherhood, the concerned outreach to those who need it, the tutoring at our sister school, Cristo Rey, Kairos Weekends, weekly retreats, the annual can drive, Basilian Missions collections, the January “March for Life” in Washington, and so many other ways in which Christ draws near! “Something which has existed since the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our own eyes, which we have watched and touched with our own hands, the Word of life, this is our theme. That life was made visible; we saw it and are giving our testimony, declaring to you the eternal life, which was present to the Father and has been revealed to us.” 1 John 1-2 It is no accident that, at the darkest time of the year, when the sun is so low on the horizon, that the Church breaks forth in praise to mark the birth of the true Invincible SON. This is why our Dads’ and Mothers’ Clubs decorate our CC home with lights. May Mary Alma Mater continue to lead us with motherly care to her Son. HAVE A GREAT CELEBRATION! Wide, wide in the rose’s side Sleeps a child without sin, And any man who loves in this world Stands here on guard over him! --Kenneth Patchen 28

National Merit Semifinalists Four Detroit Catholic Central High School students were named Semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Competition. About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2015 Preliminary Sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The Semifinalists will have the chance to compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $33 million. About 90% of the

Semifinalists will earn Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. Including the four Semifinalists this year, 62 CC students have been named National Merit Semifinalists since 2010. The four Catholic Central students named Semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Competition are: Adam Brusstar ’17 Ty Buckley ’17 Benjamin Ludtke ’17 Austin Morton ’17

No-Shave November! The Student Council and Administration decided a great way to raise money for men’s health was to allow the students to grow facial hair throughout the month of November. Each participating student or male faculty member purchased a wristband for $10 with all proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. This initiative has raised almost $2,000.

CC Business Students “Swim with the Sharks” On November 15, 2016, students from Mrs. Amanda Price’s Introduction to Business class visited Northwood University. Students were directed by John Gustincic, Director of Alden B. Dow Center for Creativity & Enterprise, on how to be original thinkers and develop business ideas. The students broke up into small groups, coming up with ideas in a short period of time. They presented their ideas in a “Shark Tank” style environment. Groups competed for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. The students finished their day with a campus tour.

CC Latin Club Travels to Italy This past summer, 37 people, (students and their families) traveled to Italy with the Latin Club moderator and CC Latin teacher, Mr. Anthony Cornish. The Club visited many beautiful sites, including Rome, Florence, and Sienna. Some of the more memorable locations, though, were a bit off the map. They went to Licenza, probably the home of the Roman poet Horace (of Carpe Diem fame) and had a picnic lunch at a beautiful waterfall

overlooking the hills of central Italy. They read some Latin poems together as a group with the sounds of nature as accompaniment. They also attended mass at the Vatican, ate their body weight in gelato, and walked over 80 miles over the nine day trip! The experience left an indelible mark on the students and their families, and as a teacher, Mr. Cornish will have very fond memories of the group. The Latin Club is now planning a trip to Greece in 2018!

CC Spain and France Trip On Tuesday, June 21, 2016, CC teacher Mr. Greg Prais, seven students, and one parent departed for a ten-day journey to Spain and France. They toured Spain’s proud capital and viewed the bustling Puerta del Sol, the Plaza de España with its Cervantes Memorial, the historic Plaza Maior, Retiro Park, and the Parliament. In addition, they visited the ornate 18th-century Royal Palace and ended the tour of Madrid at the Prado Museum and a night of flamenco dancing. The highlight of Madrid was a tour of the Santiago Bernabeú Stadium, the home of the Real Madrid Soccer Team. On the way to Barcelona, the group stopped in Zaragoza, capital of Aragón and a major university, commercial, and religious center of Spain. The tour of Barcelona featured the Plaza de Catalonia, Paseo de Gracia, the Monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus, the Gothic quarter, and Montjuic Park, the site of the 1992 Summer Olympics. They also visited the imposing Church of La Sagrada Familia, Antonio Gaudi’s unfinished cathedral, and the architect’s imaginative Guell Park. The group enjoyed a bike tour of Barcelona and a relaxing afternoon at the beach swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. They boarded Europe’s fastest train, the TGV, bound for Toulouse, one of the most vibrant cities in provincial France. They then headed for the walled town of Carcassonne to admire its ring of towers and battlements. While in France, they visited Chartres Cathedral, one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in Europe, with its powerful sculptures and stained-glass windows. In the lush Loire Valley, the group visited two of its finest chateaux: elegant Chenonceau along the River Cher and Chambord with its amazing double-helix staircase.

Of course the trip included Paris and Versailles! They saw the Place de la Concorde, the Champs-Elysées, the Arc de Triomphe, Les Invalides, the Opéra, and the soaring Eiffel Tower. They enjoyed a visit to Notre Dame Cathedral, considered one of the most glorious achievements of Gothic architecture and viewed the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum. The group especially savored not only food, but also the river boat cruise on the Seine River and walking up and down the steps of the Eiffel Tower at night! Mr. Prais intends to take another group of students in the summer of 2018.
