BASILIAN FATHERS When the Basilian Fathers established Holy Rosary High School in 1928, and celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of Catholic Central in 2003, it marked more milestones for this international community of religious priests which was founded in France in 1822, and came to North America in 1850. Today, their apostolate to youth is carried out in universities, colleges, and high schools in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Columbia. They also have charge of several parishes and an extensive mission field in the southern United States, Mexico, and South America. Their basic education apostolate has expanded to include catechetics, Newman

The “Tradition of the Crest” was created in the Fall of 2005 by Catholic Central students who vowed never to let anyone walk across the crest that sits in the tile floor just outside the Chapel. It is a sign of respect for our Blessed Mother, the teachings of the Basilian Fathers, and the motto of the School we call our home.
TRADITION OF THE CREST The background of the shield is the traditional School colors, Royal Blue and White. The colors BLUE and WHITE were selected in honor of Mary, the Mother of God, Patroness of Catholic Central. THE GREEK CROSS, in the upper left-hand corner, typifies and honors Our Lord Jesus Christ, St. Basil the Great, our Patron, and the office of the Holy Priesthood. The MYSTICAL ROSE with golden thorns symbolizes our Lady, Designed by Fr. Donoher, CSB
under whose auspices the School was founded. The THORNS are a reminder of the sacrifices and struggles endured by the pioneers who founded the School. The COGWHEEL is a symbol of the wheel of industry and of the metropolitan Detroit area where our School was founded. The SHAMROCK was selected by the founding Fathers of Catholic Central because of their own Irish heritage which they wished to keep alive.
The RIBBON with the motto of the Basilian Community – “Teach Me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge” – surrounds the shield and symbolizes our existence as an integral part of the Basilian Family. 5
HISTORICAL TIMELINE MAY 1928 Monsignor Van Antwerp announces plans to convert Holy Rosary School to an all-boys high school, also asking the Basilian Fathers to manage and staff it. SEPT. 1928 Holy Rosary School opens at the intersection of Woodward Ave. and 26 HARPER AVE. with 260 students enrolled. 1932 The Basilian Fathers take charge of Holy Name Institute. 1934 Holy Rosary School and Holy Name Institute are amalgamated into the “new” Catholic Central High School and the school moves to 60 BELMONT AVE. Extensive renovations include an additional story, doubling the building’s capacity. 1937 Increased admissions force conversion of the three-year-old gymnasium into seven additional classrooms. SPIRITUALITY RETREATS Kairos Retreat: Kairos is a Greek word meaning the “Lord’s time.” All Catholic Central students participate in a day or overnight spiritual retreat once a year. The Kairos Retreat is a four day, three night retreat open to members of the Senior and Junior classes. Day-long retreats are designed to help the students strive to become better Christian gentlemen. Each homeroom participates in a free one day retreat sponsored by the Campus Ministry Office.

GUIDANCE OFFICE The Guidance Department at CC plays an important role in enabling each student to understand his abilities, interests, and personality traits, to develop them as well as possible, and to relate them to his life goals. Counselors establish a state of mature self-guidance as they encourage and aid the student to make wise decisions. Counselors also become a central contact point for parents, as they are a constant for the student through the 4 years of different courses and teachers. The guidance office also plays a tremendous role in working with the students on their college applications, helping our families navigate the ever-changing process. 11
FRESHMAN COURSES Initial placement into classes for freshmen is determined mainly by HSPT scores and CC placement exams. Students are given an option of 1-3 electives, depending on their HSPT scores. TECHNOLOGY
At Detroit Catholic Central, technology is a part of everyday classroom life. Each student has access to a CatholicCentral.net email address, digital textbooks (included in tuition), updated teacher pages, syllabi, and online assignments. WiFi throughout the building allows students to access what they need whenever they are on campus. While technology is extremely helpful, it is meant to be a tool to help our students in their studies, not replace their ability to think for themselves. When students learn to utilize all of the tools at their disposal, it gives them a tremendous ability to accomplish great things.

ACADEMIC RESOURCES MEDIA CENTER The Catholic Central Media Center is manned by two full-time librarians, and provides our students with access to a tremendous amount of information. In addition to help with research papers and coursework, the CCMC provides our students with a place to go for an hour before and after school to work on homework or just relax in a quiet space.
Catholic Central students are provided with first-rate classrooms, science labs, computer training centers, and a Media Center. The real strength of any academic program lies in the quality of its teachers. That has been the key to Catholic Central’s success since its founding in 1928, and it will remain at the heart of our educational philosophy in the decades to come.
LEARNING STRATEGIES CENTER The LSC works in collaboration with teachers and counselors to provide additional assistance to students who are experiencing challenges in their academics. Students are empowered to improve in areas of organization, time management, test-taking strategies, and note taking. Students who have utilized 504s or IEPs in 8th grade will meet with the LSC prior to the start of 9th grade to discuss what support is available. The ultimate goal of the LSC is for the students to no longer need access to the LSC by the time they are a senior.

More than 25% of the Symphonic Band took Beginning Band as freshmen.
CONCERT BAND: A performing group for all woodwind, brass, and percussion players, the Concert Band is made up primarily of freshmen and sophomores. This group performs at the Christmas and Spring Concerts as well as MSBOA festivals. Each student in the Concert Band receives a school letter. No audition is required. Our annual tuition assistance fund is more than $1.2 million, and almost 75% of tuition assistance applicants received between $1,000 - $10,000 in grants for the 2018-2019 school year. Assistance is based on financial need, and funding is distributed based on the order of completed Tuition Assistance Applications. PARENT CLUBS
Every parent of a Catholic Central student is a member of our Dads’ (CCDC) or Mothers’ Club (CCMC). The CCMC and CCDC strive to create a variety of activities and events that will help to enhance the Catholic Central school family as well as serve our surrounding communities. The mission of both of these organizations is to act as a spiritual, social, and supplementary support system between faculty, staff, parents, and students, and to further develop the tremendous sense of community that exists amongst Shamrocks. Participation is not required, but we encourage you to get involved - You’ll be glad you did!

HIGH SCHOOL PLACEMENT TEST DATES & DETAILS | www.catholiccentral.net/HSPT The STS High School Placement Test is used by schools throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit and measures a student’s ability in cognitive and basic skills. The test is administered on-site at the high schools, and takes about 3 hours. Depending on a student’s score on the HSPT, he may be required to take summer school to finalize acceptance to CC. Our summer program runs for 4 weeks, and normally starts in mid-June the week after middle schools release.
PLEASE NOTE: Students are only able to take the HSPT one time, and Catholic Central does not accept retests.
