President A Message from the

Dear Alumni and Friends,

I want you to think back to your time in high school. Life was very different than it is today, in many ways.

In the same sense, Catholic Central is a very different school now than it was in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and even 2000s.

What remains the same?

The reason for Catholic Central has not changed - Jesus Christ. The Basilian foundation has not changed - Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. The challenge to our students has not changed - work hard, ask questions, push through difficulties, and achieve your goals.

Just as Catholic Central prepared us for success in the world we entered upon graduation, we are preparing the students currently walking our halls for the world waiting for them after high school.

However, we are no longer competing just against Catholic schools. We’re competing against schools with tax-funded 100-million dollar bonds and state-of-the-art technology. We are not simply preparing students for college; we are preparing them for a 21st century world. We are providing more tools than ever before to allow them to be better at what they are learning to do. The classrooms and labs provide better learning environments. The athletic facilities allow for more engagement outside of the classroom, in spite of challenges presented by the weather.

All of these extra perks, tools, resources, and facilities for our students are not “making it easier” for our students. We aren’t lowering the bar; we’re helping our students achieve more.

They need more technology in one classroom than we had in our entire building because they are going into a world run by technology. We’re preparing our students for careers that don’t exist yet.

Our STEM growth, spotlighted in this issue, is only one part of our masterplan. Our VISION 100 strategy points us towards Catholic Central’s future, guiding us into our next 100 years. I’m excited to begin sharing this vision with you over the coming months - a vision to continue building upon our legacy of Shamrock excellence. It involves change. CC will be a different school than it has been in the past. It will be better.

Finally, a sincere thanks to all our donors listed in this year’s President’s Report. Their support and contributions allow us to continue to grow as a school and are the reason we are able to look forward to such a bold future.

that drive revenue for the company. My team and I do that by leveraging statistics, analytics dashboards, and other reporting methods to drive insights to our day-to-day strategy.

How did your education at Catholic Central prepare you for what you are doing today?

I walk with confidence, lead with grace, and above all, keep faith as my center–all lessons taught from this institution.

On the flip side, any student coming to this school gets an opportunity to play a role in something larger than themselves, and excellence becomes ingrained in all that they do.

What is something people may not know about you?

Name: Joshua

College/Major: North Carolina State University

• B.S. Business Administration (’17)

• M.S. Analytics (’18)

Current Occupation: Manager (Operations & Analytics), Salesforce Innovation Center at Salesforce

Describe your career path. What do you have going on right now career-wise?

After I graduated from North Carolina State University in 2018 with my M.S. in Analytics, I started my career with Ernst & Young (EY) as an analytics consultant. I spent a year and a half with the firm working on a few large projects with banks and insurance companies. Following that experience, transitioned into the technology industry with Salesforce.

My current role requires me to wear a number of hats. As an operations and analytics manager, my job is to ensure that our business continues to execute and deliver executive-level meetings

Catholic Central created a unique environment that I believe prepared me for college, my career, and life. The education I received from the school allowed me to excel in many of the courses that I took in college. While I had a number of teachers, faculty, and staff who had a tremendous impact on my education, till this day, one of my favorite teachers was Mr. [Christopher] Gismondi ‘00 Growing up, I struggled with reading comprehension, grammar, and writing. While Mr. Gismondi’s class was extremely challenging, his class was one that I looked forward to every chance I had. His class not only made me a better writer and thinker, but because he invested in my education, his class changed my trajectory in life (even if he may not know it).

Catholic Central offers students a unique environment that will challenge you spiritually, emotionally, physically (sports), and mentally (education). For me, it wasn’t a cake walk. However, CC equipped me with the tools, knowledge, and resources to be an excellent writer and communicator which has helped me each and every day. The school has also developed me to be a leader and to continue to have a positive impact on those around me.

I am thankful for the education and the opportunity to have attended Catholic Central. It’s one of those opportunities that you don’t appreciate until years after you’ve left. There are many teachers, coaches, and staff members who have helped mold my success.

A few top of mind: Mr. [Aaron]

Babicz ’93, Coach [Mitch] Hancock ’00, Coach [Tony] Magni, Mr. [Kevin] Walters, Mrs. [Leah] Storm, Mr. [Brian] Bedard ’96, Mrs. [Renee] Zwick, Mr. [Jason] Jones, Mr. Gismondi, and many others.

What is the most important thing you learned while you were at Catholic Central?

One of the most important lessons that I learned while being a student at Catholic Central was how to be resilient in times of adversity. CC teaches you how to celebrate the wins (sports, grades, etc.) but also how to stand up when things don’t go as planned (losing a state title, falling short on a test, etc). You’re surrounded with a lot of support and love from a very large family, and that family helps you back on your feet to ensure you are successful.

Describe Catholic Central in three words.

Dedicated: The faculty and staff are constantly striving to ensure that the men who walk those halls are becoming the best versions of themselves so that when they leave, they have all the tools and resources to be successful.

Rewarding: You get what you put in from your experience. If you show up, get involved, ask questions, build the relationships, the rest takes care of itself. It’s hard to see the big picture while you are there, but all the lessons and experiences are things you will carry with you for the rest of your life.

Spiritual: Keeping faith at the center of all that we do.

Who influenced you most growing up?

My parents have been my biggest influencers while growing up and each has instilled different life lessons and teachings that continue to make an impact on who I am today. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from them is to always put my best foot forward and if I commit to something, make sure I do it to the best of my ability.

• In 2021, I co-founded a podcast with my best friend, Michael James, called “The Power of a Growth Mindset” where we aim to create a space for vital conversations on mental health, racial inequality, masculinity, and much more.

• After completing four years of collegiate track and field at North Carolina State University, I traded in my track spikes and began competing in triathlons. My most recent accomplishment was finishing Ironman 140.6 Lake Placid on July 24, 2022.

• Being in technology and having come from a STEM background, my true passion lies in bridging the technology gap with communities of color. I also have the opportunity to ensure that I am a change agent that is growing and developing opportunities and resources to our underrepresented communities within Salesforce. I’ve done this as:

• A high school, college, and corporate mentor through many organizations with North Carolina State, Ernst & Young, and Salesforce.

• A BIPOC Alumni Co-Lead for North Carolina State’s Institute for Advanced Analytics where we specialize in developing a pipeline for underrepresented groups.

• A Salesforce ERG lead where we specialize in creating and providing employee resources and opportunities while also finding ways to give back to our communities.

• I had the opportunity to march in the New Year’s Day parade in London with Catholic Central. That was my first time being outside the country.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Catholic Central Alumni Association is to provide services, benefits, and activities of interest to the alumni, to foster an alumni body which is interested and involved in the affairs and functions of the school, and to provide such assistance to the school as may, from time to time, be requested of it.

MARY, ALMA MATER

Mary, Alma Mater, your sons of Central honor, and trusting in your goodness, we hopefully implore that by your grace we may every day prove that we are men of Mary, Alma Mater. Inspire us evermore.

Mary, Alma Mater, your sons of Central honor, and proudly wear your colors, the Royal Blue and White. May valiant Blue and peerless White teach us to be men of Mary, Alma Mater. Inspire us evermore.

Greetings, CC Family!

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on friends, family, faith, and love.

October 30th was the Annual Memorial Mass & Breakfast at CC. Additionally, I recently attended two funerals, one for a 90-year-old man and the other for a teenager. Both funerals were joyful and sad in different measures. It is natural in such circumstances to wish for more time with the deceased loved ones to tell them again what they mean to us and that they are loved.

As thought about this, it occurred to me that love is commonly and easily expressed “downstream,” that is, to our children or grandchildren. Perhaps less frequent is the “upstream” expression to our parents and grandparents. I think one reason for this is that, as we age and get more settled, we better appreciate relationships and their value in our lives. This “re-focusing” also applies to our relationship to our faith.

Let me gently nudge you to take some time now to reflect on the important relationships in your life and to really appreciate them. Tell those people how important they are to you. Tell them they are special and loved. To the young men reading this, our recent graduates, take a moment to tell your siblings, parents, grandparents, and others that you love them. guarantee you that this simple expression means A LOT to them. To the more “seasoned” among us, reach out to your parents and loved ones also. They want to hear from you. Also, take some time to reflect on your relationship with God. He wants to hear from you as well.

Reinforcing and strengthening our relationships with loved ones brightens their lives and ours. What do you have to do today that’s more important than that?

Be well. God loves you!

Frank Jonna ’67

Born in Baghdad, Iraq, Frank’s family immigrated to Detroit, Michigan when he was six months old; he was one of seven children – six boys and one girl. Frank graduated from Catholic Central in 1967, where he also earned three varsity letters in football.

After graduating from CC, Frank worked for his eldest brother at Jonna Construction during the day as a construction laborer. Then he worked at another brother’s grocery store at night. He also attended night classes at Wayne State. Those long hours gave him the opportunity to learn both the retail and the construction business.

Frank became a partner at Jonna Construction in 1980. It was at this time that the company experienced its greatest growth and started the development side of the business. In 1999, Frank was named CEO, providing direct oversight to both the construction and development aspects of the business.

During Frank’s time as CEO, the company built and developed retail, office, medical, industrial, hospitality, and multi-family projects. Jonna Construction purchased the previous Catholic Central High School site in Redford which helped move the construction of the Novi location forward.

Frank was bullish on the redevelopment of Detroit. The company purchased and redeveloped three historical buildings in the Midtown area starting in 2000. Frank moved the Jonna Construction headquarters to Midtown Detroit in 2017.

Frank served on the Catholic Central School Board of Directors and as Chair of the Catholic Central Alumni Association for many years. He was a leader in the creation and support of Catholic Central’s endowment. Furthermore, he was successful in procuring donor gifts that CC was able to use in developing our campus in Novi.

As a Chaldean American, Frank has proudly given back to his community through his work with the Chaldean Chamber of Commerce and Shenandoah Country Club (a Chaldean community-owned facility). Frank is also actively involved in Angel’s Place, which is an organization that provides support and housing for adults with special needs.

Frank married his wife, Judy, in 1975. Frank and Judy have four children: Hether Frayer (Matt), Joey ’98 (Tammy), Jeffrey, and Brianna. Frank and Judy have five grandchildren: Jonna Frayer, Haniya Frayer, Tyler Jonna (CC 2027), Ethan Jonna (CC 2027), and Derek Jonna (CC 2029).

Larry Schenden, M.D. ’79

After graduating from Catholic Central in 1979, Larry attended the University of Notre Dame. There he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1983. After ND, Larry went on to the University of Michigan Medical School. He graduated with an M.D. degree from U of M in 1987.

Larry completed a residency in emergency medicine at William Beaumont Hospital, in Royal Oak, Michigan in 1990. From there, he went to work in San Diego, California, from 1990 to 2005. He worked at various hospitals as an Emergency Medicine Physician; mostly at Scripps-Mercy Hospital, a Level-1 trauma center in San Diego where there are many U.S. Navy and Marine Corps bases. In 1994, Larry joined the U.S. Naval Reserves. In the Naval Reserves, Larry worked as an Emergency Medicine Physician for 20 years, from 1994 to 2014. He worked at U.S. Naval hospitals on both the east coast and west coast, as well as overseas. Furthermore, Larry helped train Navy resident-physicians in emergency medicine. He did this training for many years in San Diego, both in his civilian work at Scripps-Mercy Hospital and at Balboa Naval Hospital.

While still in the Naval Reserves, Larry moved back to Michigan in 2005. Since then, he has worked as an Emergency Medicine Physician at different hospitals in both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. He also teaches at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine.

From his days at CC to the present, Larry has exemplified humbly and consistently what it means to be a man of Mary, Alma Mater. His “live to serve, and not to be served” approach to people and life is inspiring and worth acknowledgement.

Recently, Larry stated, “Catholic Central has remained a big part of my life. am still good friends with classmates from CC. Since I moved back to Michigan, have attended many different events at CC, such as football games, Christmas concerts, and Memorial Masses. was very honored to receive the “Veteran of the Month” recognition from Catholic Central in November of 2019.”

Kyle Cooper ’12 and Aaron Hess ’12

Before Kyle Cooper ’12 and Aaron Hess ’12 set foot in the halls of Catholic Central, they were living this ideal. Their friendship began in kindergarten in 1999 at St. Edith School (Livonia) where they played CYO sports before graduating in 2008. Together they came to CC and played football and basketball. After graduation in 2012, their unique friendship continued at Hillsdale College.

After graduating in 2016, Kyle and Aaron went in different directions: Kyle to play basketball in Europe, and Aaron to medical school. Now, they are both back home. Kyle is a CPA and Director of Finance at Foster Financial. Aaron is a resident in Orthopedic Surgery.

Their brotherhood remains, and they want to make sure it lasts for everyone who has been a part of CC, and more importantly, for all those young men who someday want to be Shamrocks. Kyle and Aaron know how much their lives have been formed and enriched by their experiences at Catholic Central. They have been searching for a way that they and other alumni can give back. After much thought and discussion and inspiration from Hillsdale College, they proposed to CC, The 1928 Club.

The 1928 Club is a “recurring giving” program that allows alumni of all ages to make an impact for as little as $19.28 a year. Kyle and Aaron believe that this will enable most graduates the chance to help so many more boys to become young men of CC, future Shamrocks, part of the Brotherhood.

Catholic Central was the Foundation for Success Brothers: Anthony Tomey ’99 and Michael Tomey ’07

Anthony Tomey ’99 and Michael Tomey ’07 are building an enterprise that strengthens their family and their community.

It started nearly 20 years ago when Anthony was still playing baseball with the Detroit Tigers organization, and Michael was still a student at Our Lady of Sorrows. The family purchased their first Jimmy John’s store at Grand River and Haggerty Road in Novi.

They worked hard to make that location a success, learning as the days and weeks went by. In 2006, they opened a second store. In 2008, they had four stores, and by 2018, they had 24 stores. The brothers made a big leap in 2019 and purchased 27 more stores. And then the pandemic hit. The tremendous work ethic that Anthony and Michael had learned from their dad was the virtue that saved them. Doing much of the work themselves, the brothers fed nurses at local hospitals, first responders, and other essential workers. As the pandemic restrictions began to ease, their Jimmy John’s stores were busy again.

Anthony and Michael soon became aware of a littleknown product, 8 Mile Vodka, and decided to expand their entrepreneurial spirit. Along with another partner, they purchased the company in 2020 and taught themselves how to improve and market the vodka. In July of this year, 8 Mile Vodka won “Best in Class” at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Where can you purchase 8 Mike Vodka? Go to www.8MileVodka.com to find 8 Mile Vodka near you.

The brand and slogan, “Born in Detroit, ” came along with the purchase of the vodka company. They are using it to instill pride and joy in Detroit roots for many in the community.

They are partnering with Meijer, the Detroit Pistons, Wayne State Athletics, Kronk Boxing Gym and the Detroit Public School League. Anthony and Michael have also connected this slogan with their own roots, remembering that their Alma Mater was also born in Detroit in 1928.

What’s next for these adventurous brothers? Soon they will be opening their first Chicken Guy restaurant in Livonia, a franchise started by Food Network star, Guy Fieri.

As they reflected on their path through these adventures, they gave first recognition to their dad, who never accepted secondrate effort. Their wives (Anthony and Rita, Michael, and Connie) were credited with brilliance, hard work, and encouragement. As they looked back on their years at Catholic Central, they realized that CC was the foundation of how they became successful. It gave them the ability and the willingness to learn and strive. They reflected that the Catholic Central brotherhood doesn’t end on graduation day; it starts when you walk in the front door as a 14-year-old and never ends.

Building the George and Mary Turek HALL OF SCIENCE

The George and Mary Turek Hall of Science is scheduled to finish construction in 2024. To better prepare Catholic Central for this giant leap forward in technology and educational tools is Amy Ely, Catholic Central’s new Director of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and she has just one question…“Where My Nerds At?!”

Ely comes to Catholic Central from a varied background in the scientific field before her career as a teacher. “When I worked at BASF Chemical Corporation, they put a huge stress on educational outreach, and I found really enjoyed that aspect of the job. This was before I even had children,” she said.

After leaving the workforce for six years to raise her two daughters, Ely began volunteering in their classrooms. From there, Ely soon felt drawn to teaching and returned to school

for her Masters in Education from the University of Phoenix.

Ely began teaching in 2013 in the Taylor School District as the district’s Elementary Technology Teacher, where she built a Tech Curriculum for grades K-5 in her first year. She then moved to the Riverview Community School District, where she has spent the last eight years building a STEM program now used by districts from across the state as a benchmark for their own curriculum.

“I thought my career at Riverview would have to come to a close because I was getting married and moving an hour away, so I decided to diverge my interests and look elsewhere. Then CC contacted me about the school’s Director of STEM position, and it was an answer to my prayers,” said Ely.

When asked about her vision for STEM education and the new George and Mary Turek Hall of Science, Ely spoke about the importance of infusing STEM into all aspects of learning at CC, not limited only to the new Hall of Science.

“STEM is not just an area; it is science, technology, engineering, and math. Those are the fields that were determined that the United States has a dearth of in their secondary and higher education,” said Ely. “We want to really focus on this area so that our students have the best tools available to give them the highest possible chance of success when they leave us and move on to college.”

It is clear that there is a lot of buzz around the new 57,000 square feet addition on campus with construction drawing nearer to completion each day. “It is going to be a structure like you have never seen, and we are going to fill it with brilliance,” said Ely. “The facets that are going to be available in this space are second-to-none, even at a university level, ranging from our four meter Observa-Dome telescope to our Redbird Flight Simulator, eight dedicated science labs, innovation labs, augmented and virtual reality integrations, and our 130-seat 270 degree immersion theater. We are preparing CC students for jobs that aren’t even available yet.”

Outside of the classroom, Ely is never far from her interests. Last summer, she did a fellowship for a joint project between MIT and the University of Michigan in Neuroscience using Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, in which she guided ten

undergraduate students from all over the world in their pursuit of using neuroscience technology to develop better AI. She is also the Director for Camp Invention-Vanguard, a high-intensity summer STEM Camp sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame and the US Patent & Trademark Office.

Ely’s saying, ‘Where my nerds at?’, is more than just a humorous attention-grabbing line; it is a call to action for the CC community. She is looking for CC alumni, parents, and community members who are just as passionate as she is about STEM education to share their knowledge and expertise with students. If you are interested in offering some of your time, talents, or treasures to CC’s STEM program, please contact aely@catholiccentral.net.

Watch our interview with Director of STEM, Amy Ely, and stay up-to-date with construction progress.

Basilian Fathers CELEBRATE

BICENTENNIAL IN ROME

Reprinted from basilian.org

For 200 Years, the Basilian Fathers Have Practiced their Mission of Education and Evangelization in France, Canada, United States, Mexico, and Colombia.

The ten founders of the Congregation of St. Basil came together in 1822 to respond to urgent need for Christian education in the increasingly secularized France following the French Revolution. The Basilians have remained true to their founding mission of providing Catholic education to those in need.

Commemorating 200 Years of Ministry

On June 1, 2022 Fathers Kevin Storey, John Huber, Morgan Rice, Pedro Mora and Alejandro Estrada, CSB began a Bicentennial Pilgrimage commemorating the Basilian founding by travelling to the Congregation’s birthplace in Annonay, France in the region of Ardèche.

In the aftermath of the French Revolution, anti-clerical laws had forced a group of priests to operate schools in secret in the region of the Ardèche, located in the mountains of central France. These ten priests became the founding fathers of the Congregation of St. Basil.

“The Congregation of Saint Basil is one of the rare communities founded by several men rather than by one charismatic founder. Undoubtedly, this unique situation has inspired an unspoken charism of men of various backgrounds and personalities working together to serve God’s People and the Church in the needs of the times, especially in the area of Catholic education.” remarked Rev. John Huber, CSB.

Their time in France began with Mass at College Sacré-Coeur, in Annonay, France where they celebrated a bicentennial mass on the Feast of Pentecost. Monsignor Jean-Louis Balsa, Bishop of Viviers, presided and Father John Huber, CSB preached.

The next stop in their pilgrimage was the Chapel of Saint Basile, a small chapel that dates back to the 13th century, located in the hamlet of Saint Basile in the Ardèche. It was there that the Basilian founders from the nearby Maisonseule came to celebrate Mass and the towns people began to call them “Les prêtres de Saint-Basile”, the Priests of Saint Basil, or the Basilians.

Blessings Upon Future Ministry

The Basilians culminated their pilgrimage in Rome where they were honored with a private audience with Pope Francis and celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Peter’s Basilica. During the Offertory, the name of every Basilian Associate, Novice, Scholastic, Priest, and Lay Associate was read aloud.

“Our 10 founders may not recognize the community they founded, as we have adapted and expanded our ministry to five countries, but I believe they would be proud we have stayed true to our founding mission of providing Catholic education to those in need” said Very Rev. Kevin Storey, CSB, Superior General of the Congregation.

The Hall of Science is attracting new families to Catholic Central, and we are excited to welcome them to our community.

As write this letter, we still have a busy December and January ahead of us!

We’ve had more than 225 families already submit or start an application online (as of November 29), and with a deadline of December 21, we look forward to reviewing a great number of potential Shamrocks.

We send out acceptance packets the 4th Friday of January, a date set by the Archdiocese of Detroit. We know there may be a number of families who missed our December 21, application deadline, but we will continue to work with them on a rolling basis as long as we have seats to fill.

Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and donors, we do our best to include tuition assistance and scholarship offers in those acceptance packets, which allows families to make a more informed decision.

Our current freshmen are off to a great start, with an average GPA of 3.6 for the first quarter and more than 70% of the class has already joined a club or team!

As always, if you know a young man who would make a great Shamrock, please send him our way or simply refer him to our website (www.catholiccentral.net/admissions). We’ll take it from there.

Thank you for your prayers and support, and remember that every day is a GREAT day to be a Shamrock!
