A Message from the

President

Dear Alumni and Friends, For many of us, Fr. Richard Elmer, CSB ‘46 is one of the first priests who comes to mind when you think of Catholic Central. He was a student at CC, then a teacher, counselor, Athletic Director, Principal, Alumni Director, President, and finally, President Emeritus. He served Catholic Central for more than 60 years. It is not a stretch to say that he meant more to Catholic Central than almost any other individual has meant to a high school. Most importantly, he was a great priest. He loved celebrating the Eucharist, and for the last 10-15 years, he put all of his efforts into getting souls to heaven. Fr. Elmer was loved by countless people, and I am confident that his efforts to lead as many souls to heaven as possible will prove fruitful. Personally, he was one of the greatest people I have ever been blessed to know and call a friend. We thank him, will miss him, and ask him to keep praying for our wonderful school that he held so dear to his own heart. For those who may not know, Fr. Elmer is the biggest reason Catholic Central has found our home in Novi. He was the one who led the effort to relocate, and he started that project when he was 71 years young! He has raised a lot of money for Catholic Central using the term “velvet hammer,” a phrase that aptly described the man using it. We are proud to continue to build on his vision for Catholic Central and to move forward with developing this beautiful home he created for his alma mater. The new STEM addition highlighted in this issue is the next step in the master campus plan that will eventually look to touch on every aspect of student life, including other academic departments, athletics, the fine arts, student activities, and spirituality. These projects are being thoughtfully developed as we plan for our 100th Anniversary and as we continue our fundraising efforts. At his 90th birthday party (how fitting that Fr. Elmer and Catholic Central were both born in 1928), Fr. Elmer announced his birthday wish, which was to work ten more years for the Lord - to 100. While the good Lord saw fit to bring him home early, Fr. Elmer’s dream is now ours to fulfill. For our part in the Advancement Office, we continue to work toward the three goals of building our campus with the state-of-the-art facilities to offer the best educational experience possible, increasing teacher salaries, and building our endowment to make a CC education available to all deserving young men. As always, thank you for your prayers and financial support. We can only continue our mission with your help. Your fellow Shamrock,

In the Fall of 1928, Catholic Central High School was founded in Detroit. The same year, four months earlier, Richard J. Elmer was born. On Thursday, November 4, 2021, Fr. Richard J. Elmer, CSB ‘46, dedicated Basilian priest and educational figurehead to countless generations of Catholic youth in the metro Detroit area, passed away at the age of 93.

Fr. Elmer was born on May 3, 1928, in Detroit to Frank and Loyola Elmer. He attended Epiphany Parish and grade school and graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School in 1946. He was an active student-athlete at CC. Smart, quick, and competitive, he was involved at school and on the playing fields, enjoying football, baseball, and handball. During his senior year (1945-46), he was Student Council and Class President, Co-Editor of the school yearbook, The Shamrock, member of the Science Club, and graduation Salutatorian. Following graduation from CC, he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Toronto in 1952 and was ordained in 1957. He also received a Master of Arts Degree in guidance and counseling from the University of Detroit in 1963. Fr. Elmer returned to Catholic Central as a teacher in 1952-54, 1960-61, and a guidance counselor from 1961-1967, 1975-1978. He served CC for six years as Principal from 1967-1973 and as Athletic Director from 1973-1975. In 1978, CC moved from Outer Drive to Breakfast Drive, and Fr. Elmer moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the National Catholic Education Association, where he served in a senior administrative role to help organize its largest event, the NCEA Convention. After finishing his term in D.C., he was appointed as Dean of Men at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. 4

In 1990, Fr. Elmer came home to become Catholic Central’s Director of Development and Alumni Relations, and later, would become CC’s first President in 2000. As President, he would become the driving force in securing not only the land but also the donations to build a school at what would be CC’s fifth and final home on Wixom Road in Novi. In 200 4, for his lifetime of service to Catholic Central and Catholic education, Fr. Elmer was recognized with the Fr. Canning F. Harrison, CSB Distinguished Alumnus Award. In 2008, while serving as CC’s President Emeritus, he spearheaded a collaboration between loyal friends and CC alumni to open St. Catherine of Siena, an all-girls Catholic school in Wixom. There, he served as St. Catherine’s first Principal and Chaplain. Fr. Elmer remained fiercely dedicated to his roles as CC’s President Emeritus and St. Catherine’s Chaplain until the time of his passing.

Everyone who has been blessed to spend time with Fr. Elmer knows it is impossible to fully encapsulate his unfaltering faith, endearing character, and infectious smile in just a few words. He was well-known for his warm, personable attitude and his ability to make you feel as if you were the only person in the room. The number of lives he positively impacted cannot be measured. His passion for Catholic education and his goal to assist as many souls to Heaven as possible in one lifetime will continue to inspire countless stories. His life serves as testament to the myriad ways one human being can be of service, and his life’s story will continue to serve as a beacon of faith, hope, and love for many generations to come. Fr. Elmer, learned, taught, shared, and lived Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. He would often say, “Jesus Christ is the Reason for Catholic Central;” that through Him and the intercession of our Blessed Mother, we get closer to God and Heaven.

I had a great conversation with Fr. Elmer just a month ago, and he was in such great spirits and ready to get back to work (at 93!). Fr. In the words of Fr. Elmer, “The primary purpose for our existence is to get to Heaven. The richest nourishment for our journey is the Holy Eucharist. Our special spokesperson is Our Blessed Mother. Staying Connected With Your Classmates THE NIFTY ’50s 1950 - JERRY SCHMIDT and his spouse, Pat, celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary on October 27, 2021. Jerry and Pat continue to attend many CC gatherings. 1953 - The Werewolf of Belmont Avenue, a.k.a. Vince Lee ‘53, made his appearance along with Tom Moylan ‘53, Joe McKevitz ‘53, Jerry Zdeb ‘53, and Jerry Dywasuk ‘53 at a Halloween luncheon on October 29, 2021, at Rocky’s of Northville. Good stories and CC camaraderie are always shared when these guys get together.

THE GROOVY ’70s 1977 - PAT BYRNES works for the cartoon syndicate, Cagle Cartoons, and his work has been published in The New Yorker. He was recently featured in an October article in the Detroit Catholic. 1977 - MARC RULLO came home to CC for a visit in August 2021. 1979 - LANCE GOTKO, with many prayers to Mary, Alma Mater, successfully finished walking the 500-mile Camino de Santiago pilgrimage on October 18, 2021. His pilgrimage began in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France and ended at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, which houses the remains of the apostle Saint James the Greater. Big brother, Dean, will be three years old in December. 2017 - BLAKE BUETER is a senior at Michigan State University where he is pursuing a degree in packaging. Mrs. Josephine Evangelista Celebrates Her 100th Birthday Mrs. Josephine Evangelista recently celebrated her 100th birthday on October 22. Jo worked at Catholic Central for 35 years as a secretary in the Attendance Office, Athletic Office, and Guidance Office before retiring in August 2007. She is the mother of four children, three of whom attended CC (Doug ‘69, Mike ‘74, and the late Jon ‘67). She also served as President of the Mothers’ Club in 1970-1971. Her grandson, Marc ‘95, is also a CC graduate. The CC Community congratulates Mrs. Jo Evangelista on her joyous celebration, and we wish her continued health and happiness in the years to come. Alumni Reminisce on School Days Gone By

I am 78 and retired this year. Some of my most rewarding years were at 6565 West Outer Drive. I was a “band boy” which really made the CC experience even better at pep rallies, football and basketball games, and of course, our concerts. I not only received a great foundation for college, but also had fun along the way. After CC, I attended Assumption University (University of Windsor). I graduated with a BSc in Biology/Chemistry. With my degree, I pursued a career in medical sales and, eventually, became a Regional Sales Manager for Alcon’s Surgical Products Division.

ALUMNI BUSINESS PROFILE: Coratti’s Pizzeria Bar & Bocce They are determined to serve their customers in the best way possible. Before opening, Pete ’79 and Pete ’04 traveled to Napoli, Italy, where they did research and serious learning. They returned with Vera Pizza Napoletana Certification after rigorous training in the creation of specialized pizza. Along with this knowledge, they brought wood-burning ovens, specially manufactured in Italy and shipped to Howell. Napoletana style pizza is the heart of their menu. A real treat after one of the many and varied offerings on their menu is house-made, all natural gelato; the flavors are unique and always changing. Service and food are both parts of the Coratti tradition, tracing back to Sunday meals at their grandparents’ home when everyone gathered. “These meal times cemented our family bond,” said Pete’79. “Those times together formed our heritage of looking out for each other.” Many of their grandmother Mary’s recipes are used at the other family restaurant, Coratti’s on Main in Milford, which is run by Pete ’79’s sister and Pete ’04’s mom, Michele Coratti Pfeffer. Coratti’s Pizzeria Bar & Bocce in Howell is a family place – in every sense of the word. It is owned and run by a trio of CC alumni: Pete Coratti ’79 and his nephews, Anthony Coratti ’01 and Peter Pfeffer ’04. However, Coratti’s is there for your family – in its many forms. On a recent evening: • Toward the middle of the room, there are four guys arguing about their round of golf over pizza and beer. • Near the gelato station, a group from a local business is toasting a co-worker’s birthday. • At a large table to the side, an extended family laughs and talks at their regular gathering. • Just beginning a game of bocce, a small group is celebrating “women’s night out.” These are just a few of the ways their family serves your family. It is the Coratti family motto: “Live to serve, not to be served.”

Another part of the Coratti heritage is sending their sons to Catholic Central. Pete’s brothers, Rick ’69 and Tom ’72, preceded him to the Outer Drive location. Fr. Dick Elmer, CSB ‘46, or Fr. Frank Mizzi, CSB, or Fr. Phil Acquaro, CSB, or Fr. Norb Clemens, CSB would often be a part of their family gatherings. One of the famous family stories relates to the winter evening when older brother Rick and his girlfriend, Nancy (now Mrs. Coratti), were to take little brother Pete to a CC basketball game. The brothers somehow lost each other by the end of the game, so Pete decided to walk home. He was hit by a car leaving the game on Outer Drive, leaving him dazed and sprawled on the boulevard. When Rick finally found him, Pete was being given the last rites by none other than, Fr. Ned Donoher, CSB! NCAA ALL-AMERICAN AND OLYMPIC BRONZE MEDALIST A sit-down with Olympic Bronze Medalist and CC Alum Myles Amine

This summer, Catholic Central alumnus Myles Amine ’15 battled his way to earn the bronze medal for wrestling at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. A current graduate student at the University of Michigan, Amine has placed three times in the NCAA Championships and was the first-ever wrestler from San Marino to compete at the Olympics. Amine represented his ancestorial country of San Marino, bringing pride and notoriety to the small country enclaved by Italy. He also brought pride to Catholic Central and showed Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge on and off the mat. We sat down with Myles to gain insight into his journey leading up to his success and what encourages him daily to keep at his dreams.

Question: How did you start wrestling? Amine: Wrestling has been a tradition in my family for many years. It started with my jido (grandfather) who wrestled for Lebanon in the Helsinki and Rome Olympics over 50 years ago. I decided to pick it up around 4th grade and got serious with the sport when I arrived at Catholic Central as a freshman. Q: Were there people who encouraged you to pursue wrestling? Amine: Yes, of course. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for CC. My coaches Mitch Hancock ’00, Anthony Biondo, and the rest of the staff were monumental in my development on and off the mat. Also, I give a lot of credit to Aaron Babicz ’93 for putting wrestling at the forefront of Catholic Central Athletics. Q: How did Catholic Central help you in college and beyond? Amine: Going to high school at CC taught me to outwork everyone; that’s really all there is to it. I remember how busy I was because wrestling and school were both major commitments. I would come home from a grueling three-hour practice, eat dinner, study, or do homework for a few hours, then go to bed. There were definitely times that I got to hang out with friends and have fun. However, more times than not I was skipping out on late night activities to go to morning workouts, even in the middle of the summer. The mentality for me has never changed. Q: What was the process for qualifying for the Olympics or learning that you can play for San Marino? Was this always a goal of yours? Amine: I was born a dual citizen of the United States and San Marino. This is because my mother was a Sammarinese citizen, and it is passed down through your parents. I didn’t really think about competing internationally until 2017, and I knew I could wrestle for the USA or San Marino at that point. I ultimately chose San Marino because I knew it would give me the opportunity to travel the world and compete against the best right away.

Q: Do you see yourself competing in 2024? Amine: I’m not totally sure yet. I will say that I had an incredible experience at this past Olympics, and my wrestling career definitely isn’t over yet. Q: Are there other goals or interests you have that you are planning to pursue? Amine: Yes, when wrestling comes to an end, I’d like to run my own business. My undergrad degree was a BBA with an emphasis in finance, so I want to take full advantage of what I’ve learned from U of M and wrestling. Q: What advice do you have for current Catholic Central students? Amine: Find what you love to do, and commit fully to it. Don’t try to take shortcuts or think you can beat the system. The hard part is sometimes you don’t even know you’re taking a short cut. It can be disguised as “working smarter, not harder,” but I truly believe that

nothing worth pursuing is going to come easy. That can be related to academics, sport, and most importantly, life. Finally, check your attitude every morning when you wake up and do your best to become a positive-thinking person. I honed in on doing this a few months before the Olympics, and it made a world of a difference.

Catholic Central’s Diversity Initiative Expands to the Alumni Board entrepreneurship. His basketball career began at Catholic Central where he played for four years. “I became active in the Catholic Central alumni community directly after returning from Europe by joining the men’s alumni basketball league. Seeing old friends, teammates, classmates, and their families was always the best part of the alumni league,” said Moore. “I hope my presence on the Board continues to serve as a sign of the diversity that already exists within Catholic Central. I am humbled to give future young black males a representation of themselves in a position they will one day find themselves in based on their foundation from Catholic Central.” Over the past several years, Catholic Central has worked to increase its diversity footprint through programs and expanding resources, while also remaining firm on the goal of the initiative – welcoming as many families as possible from diverse backgrounds. After a one-year hiatus due to Covid, the Catholic Central Alumni Association Softball League (AASL) was back in full swing in 2021! The 7th season wrapped up this past summer after a great season of softball. On August 8, 2021, the AASL held its annual season ending tournament where Team Dulzo defeated Team Babicz in the championship game. This was Team Dulzo’s second year in a row of capturing the title of Alumni Association Softball League Champions. Thank you to all who helped make this season one to remember! Santello ‘58 Gymnasium as part of the 77th Annual Boys’ Bowl Weekend activities. The Detroit Catholic Central Athletic Hall of Fame acknowledges the contributions and accomplishments of the individuals and teams that have earned recognition and have provided excellent examples of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. Congratulations to our newest honorees and their families! THE CLASS OF 2020 AND 2021 INDUCTEES ARE: SALVATORE “SAL” CIPRIANO (POSTHUMOUSLY)

Recognized for his dedication and commitment, Catholic Central and the CC Athletic Department was blessed to have Sal Cipriano’s counsel, service, and friendship for over three decades. He assisted as coach, mentor, confidant, and tournament director. Sal was a tremendous example of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge in action. RICHARD CORATTI ’69 During Rick Coratti’s 36 years of coaching CC Football, he was Defensive Coordinator for nine Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) State Championships, 15 MHSAA Regional Championships,13 MHSAA State Finals appearances and15 Catholic High School League (CHSL) Championships. His varsity teams’ record was 303 wins and 77 losses. In his 21-year basketball career as an Assistant Coach and Head Coach at Catholic Central, Rick’s teams’ accomplishments included three MHSAA District Championships, six CHSL final appearances, and two CHSL Championships. Rick’s overall varsity record was 183-77. Rick was a devoted teacher, coach, and mentor to thousands of studentathletes at his alma mater. 24

STANLEY HEATH III ’83 Stan was known at Catholic Central as a hardworking, playmaking point guard. He led the Shamrocks to the 1983 Catholic High School League (CHSL) Championship while earning All-State honors. Stan earned a scholarship to Eastern Michigan University. His devotion to the game of basketball continued upon graduating from EMU. He followed his passion into coaching where he was an assistant coach for a few programs, including with Tom Izzo at Michigan State University. He led his teams as head coach at Kent State, Arkansas, and South Florida to multiple conference championships and NCAA appearances. Stan has also coached in the NBA-G League leading the Lakeland (Orlando) Magic to a championship. In April 2021, Stan returned home to his collegiate alma mater as head coach at Eastern Michigan University. MICHAEL LEWIS ’80 When you talk about outstanding all-around threesport athletes at Catholic Central, Mike Lewis was one of the best. He was a gritty, hard-nosed competitor and leader, who won the 1980 Fr. James Whelan Award. Mike was a four-year Honor Roll member, as well as a three-year varsity letter winner in Football, Basketball, and Baseball. Mike was a key player on two state championship teams, the 1979 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Division I Baseball State Championship and 1979 MHSAA Division I Football State Championship. Mike earned a football scholarship to Eastern Michigan University. THOMAS MACH Over 41 years, Tom Mach established a football powerhouse at Detroit Catholic Central, leading the Shamrocks to unprecedented heights, winning 370 games and 10 State Championships along with sending a few hundred student-athletes on to college success. Tom Mach’s win total ranks him third all-time in the State of Michigan. Tom Mach was inducted into the Detroit Catholic League Hall of Fame, the Michigan High School Football Coaches

Association Hall of Fame, and, in 2014, the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame. Over his career, he earned multiple Coach of the Year honors, including the Detroit Lions High School Coach of the Year. Coach Mach was Mick McCabe’s choice as the Best Catholic High School League (CHSL) Football Coach of all time. Coach Mach led Catholic Central to more state championship game appearances, 17, than any other coach in the state. Also, his teams were the first Division I teams to “threepeat” in state title games. Along the way, his teams won 12 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) District titles, 20 MHSAA Regional titles, 21 CHSL Division titles, and 17 CHSL titles. “The WHAM Never Loses Yardage!” DAVID MOSS ’00 David Moss had a stellar hockey career. At Catholic Central, he worked his way from the scout team to All-State 1st Team both junior and senior years, as well as being named to the All-State Dream Team his senior year. David played four seasons at the University of Michigan where he once again distinguished himself. David’s NHL (Calgary Flames and Phoenix Coyotes) career stats: 501 games, 78 goals, 100 assists, and 157 penalty minutes. David Moss’ highlights include centering Calgary’s top line of Jarome Inginla and Alex Tanguary and appearing in three outdoor games. David also came back home to his alma mater to serve as an assistant coach on CC’s Varsity Hockey Team. JAY SNYDER ’78 Jay was Captain of both the 1977 Football Team and 1978 State Championship Wrestling Team. Jay earned varsity letters in Football, Wrestling, and Track & Field, multiple team awards, and was the only football player in CC history to win both the Rugged Jug and MVP in the same season, as well as being named to the 1977 Football All-State team. Jay graduated from Yale University in 1982 after leading the football team to three-consecutive Ivy League Championships, earning All-Ivy League honors. Jay led the Yale defense to a modern day high of #2 defense in the country.

“We will win the State Finals in ‘85,” was the statement of CC Varsity Tennis Coach, Mr. Frank Garlicki, to the press after finishing as runnerup (by 1 point) in the 1984 MHSAA Finals. The Shamrocks went on to win the MHSAA Regionals and the MHSAA State Finals decisively. The Shamrocks were in the front end of “back-to-back” State Class “A” Tennis Championships. In the 1985 finals, Catholic Central had three State Champions: Mark Agah ’87, the team of Greg Grabowski ’85 and Jeff Huston ’87 and the team of Jim Gillespie ’87 and Steve Campbell ’88. It was a repeat for the Shamrocks as Coach Frank Garlicki predicted. It was a great team effort. The Shamrocks reached the semi finals in six of seven flights, scoring 21 of the 24 points needed to win. Steve Campbell’s ’88 state title at No. 3 singles provided the clincher. The No. 3 doubles of co-captains, Mark Frederick ’86 and Walt Bartels ’86 reached the finals. The No. 1 doubles of Jim Gillespie ’87 and Jeff Huston ’87 reached the semi finals. The No. 2 doubles of Randy Janis ’87 and Rob Transou ’87 also reached the semi finals. Phil Eagleson ’87 the No. 2 singles and the No. 4 singles Anthony Mikulec ’89 also reached the finals. The No. 1 singles player, Mark Agah ’87, reached the quarterfinals. 1988 WRESTLING TEAM

Ranked fourth nationally, the Shamrocks repeatedly punished opponents, finishing the season with a perfect 13-0 record in dual meets. The Shamrocks then continued their reign over the Catholic League at the Catholic High School League Championship (CHSL) meet with nine CC wrestlers winning individual CHSL titles and setting a record for team points on the way to another team title. CC was led by Tri-Captain and returning All-American Toby Heaton ’88 and Lee Krueger ’89, both of whom were State Champions. Brendan Rock ’88 and Tri-Captain Chris Lemanski ’88 finished strong, taking second and fifth, respectively. Matt Helm ’89 and Chris Rodriguez ’89 also did well, finishing second and fourth.

and outscoring opponents by an average of 21 points. With a 6-2 record entering the last game of the regular season, it was do-or-die time for the Shamrocks. The “brick wall” defense turned in a spectacular performance, shutting down DePorres’ running game and not allowing a single pass completion. CC’s run continued through the MHSAA tournament and culminated in a nearly perfectly executed State Championship game against undefeated Detroit King. The Shamrocks, once again, proved revenge is sweet in the dominating win over the Martin Luther King Crusaders 21-0. 1995 FOOTBALL TEAM

1989 CROSS COUNTRY TEAM

The CC harriers, led by Mike Sheridan, cruised through an undefeated dual-meet season and proved to be a top team in invitationals. They won the Catholic High School League (CHSL) Sectional and the CHSL Championship. Going into the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s (MHSAA) state meet, CC and Ann Arbor Pioneer were tied for the number one boys’ cross-country team in Michigan during the eighties. The Shamrocks prevailed, winning their third State Championship in the eighties. CC Cross Country is the best in the long run! 1990 FOOTBALL TEAM

One of the hardest working football teams in Catholic Central’s storied football program history, the No. 1 ranked team in the state and CHSL Champions were led throughout the season by captains Judah May ’96, Steve Mondry ’96, Mike Smiley ’96 and John Spolsky ’96. Using the strength of their running game, CC defeated all comers, including the undefeated Holt Rams in the state title game and ended the season with a 24-0 victory in front of over 17,000 people at the Pontiac SilverDome. STEM Center We are proud to announce a new STEM addition to our current building. Construction is slated to begin in the summer of 2022 with the goal of opening for students in January of 2024. This addition will help us continue to offer the best possible academic environment for all of our students and better equip our students to compete in the 21st Century workforce. While we are excited to be able to share the renderings with families, keep in mind that the final design might be a bit different!

Year-End Financial Planning Topics Guest Columnist Albert Herzog IV ’10 As we wrap up the 2021 year, it’s a good time to check off those planning items that you meant to get around to doing. As a financial advisor at Executive Wealth Management, we talk about various topics with our clients throughout the year, and the following are a few of the year-end financial planning conversations we are having that you should consider. MAX YOUR RETIREMENT ACCOUNT CONTRIBUTIONS • Employer Accounts - Take full advantage of any employer match benefit. In 2021, the maximum employee deferral for 401(k), 403(b), and 457 accounts is $19,500, and individuals age 50 and older can defer an additional catch-up for $6,500. • IRA’s - The maximum contribution amount to a traditional or Roth IRA is $6,000, with a $1,000 catch-up for individuals age 50 and older. Be sure to review the Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) limits to ensure you are eligible. • Self Employed - Consider a solo 401(k). These can help boost your retirement savings and save on taxes. You must set these accounts up by December 31st. • Consider Roth Conversions - If you have money in Traditional 401(k)s or IRAs, the period between retirement and required minimum distributions can present an excellent opportunity for Roth conversions. Now is an especially good time to consider this strategy with potential tax law changes on the horizon. • Review and Rebalance Portfolios - Now is a great time to rebalance your portfolio back to your target allocations. You may also find opportunities to save on taxes, such as harvesting capital losses to offset capital gains. • Required Minimum Distributions from Retirement Accounts - If you are over 72 or have an inherited IRA, you must take a distribution based on age and marital status. These distributions are taxable unless you send them directly to a charity via a Qualified Charitable Distribution. • Utilize the Tax Benefits of Charitable Giving - The above-the-line deduction under the CARES Act was extended to 2021, which means you can deduct up to $300 per person ($600 for joint filers) for cash charitable contributions. For larger gifts, you may consider donating appreciated stocks instead of cash. By donating appreciated stock, you remove the tax liability from being your responsibility – fulfilling your charitable desires while being strategically smart with your wealth. As an alumnus of the great Catholic Central High School, consider making your alma mater part of your charitable giving strategy. The process of finding a charity and donating money seems simple. However, just like portfolio asset allocation, slightly different approaches can yield dramatically different results. Please consult your financial, tax, or legal advisor for specifics on how making planned gifts can help you. There are many variables that play a role in your financial success, but these items above should serve as a good starting point into deeper conversations about maximizing your financial position. During these past few months, we have been creative and focused on engaging current 8th grade families who may have been limited in their ability to explore our campus in past years. Between August and the end of October, we: • Hosted a “Sunday Visit Day” which included (70+) 8th grade students visiting the CC campus

• Hosted five “Lunch & Conversation” or “Coffee & Conversation” events with more than (100) 7th and 8th grade families attending

• Conducted more than 50 family tours • Hosted close to (100) 8th grade students for a shadow day with close to (200) scheduled through December As I write this letter, we still have a busy November and December ahead of us. We have our Open House on Sunday, November 7, (we expect to fill our limit of 150 families with 8th grade students) as well as the High School Placement Test on November 20 and December 4. New this year, if a student has taken the PSAT 8/9 in 8th grade they can submit that test score in lieu of the HSPT. We are excited at this adjustment, as we know it will help a number of families with their application process. Interested families continue to submit their applications online, and we look forward to working through them all and sending out our acceptance packets at the end of January. These packets will include tuition assistance and scholarships for those students who qualify, and we are so incredibly grateful for the donors who continue to allow us to help deserving families send their sons to CC. We will be hosting an Activities Night in January and Spring Open House in March as we continue to offer new opportunities for families to explore the opportunity to be a part of the Catholic Central community. We are dedicated to meeting students where they are and showcasing how Catholic Central can help them get where they want to be. Current Events at Catholic Central

Shamrock Shuffle For more than 30 years, the Catholic Central family has been participating in a 1.5 mile run for charity known as the “Shamrock Shuffle.” For more than 20 years, we have partnered with Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. CC students, faculty, and staff walked and ran in the Shamrock Shuffle on Friday morning of Boys’ Bowl week and raised a record total, $10,768.00 for Make-A-Wish. This year’s 1st Place trophy went to Owen Ryan ’25, while Thomas Watson ’25 earned 2nd Place, and Ethan Lapham ’23 came in 3rd Place. In total over the last 20+ years, CC has raised $186,486.87 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. We would like to thank Mr. Steve Lemieux for organizing this event, Mr. Tony Magni and the Cross Country Team for all of their efforts, Mrs. Amanda Loffler and the DECA Club for advertising the event, and all those who donated for their generosity.

Detroit Catholic Central has a proud tradition of graduating National Merit Scholars. The Class of 2022 entered the 67th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Approximately 16,000 students have been named Semifinalists. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. About 95 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. CC Junior Earns Eagle Scout Rank Patrick Michel ’23 has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with his Troop #3 from Spiritus Sanctus Academy. In addition to Eagle Scout, Patrick was recognized for receiving the Pillars of Faith Award for completing all four Catholic Committee on Scouting awards - Parvuli Dei, Light of Christ, Ad Altare Dei, and Pope Pius XII. Pillars of Faith is awarded to fewer than 1% of all Eagle Scouts. For his Eagle Scout Project, Patrick built an outdoor classroom for the Spiritus Sanctus Academy Ann Arbor campus, which proved to be very helpful during the pandemic. Patrick’s father, Patrick Michel ’83, had the distinct honor of serving as Den Leader and Assistant Scout Master throughout Patrick’s ten years of scouting and also served as the Troop’s Religious Awards Chair. CC WELCOMES New Faculty Members CRYSTAL CANNON My name is Madame Crystal Cannon. I am a wife and mother of two daughters and a stepson. In addition to my university studies, I studied French in Nice, Lyon, Paris, and Royan, France. I fell in love with French in high school. I heard that French was a Romance Language, but I think I misunderstood. Anyway, it worked out. I spent 15 years working at Renaissance High School, then eight years at Cass Tech. I retired from DPS in 2019. I’m glad to be here at Catholic Central. It has been a delight to see a different side of education from the one I knew. The boys are sweet and silly, and I enjoy teaching them, and of course, French.

RUSS FACIONE My name is Russ Facione, and I have been in education for 30 years. I taught high school, middle school, and alternative high school social studies for about nine years. Then I was a school administrator for the next 20, where I was an elementary principal for 16. Then I retired from the public schools, so I could return to the classroom, where I taught at All Saints since 2018, before coming to CC this past August. Personally, I am a dad of four girls (ages 17-24). We have a few dogs, we love to camp, and we have bonfires in our backyard all summer. I’m very excited to be here at Catholic Central! SARAH FLAGG

BISHOY DAWOOD Just before joining the Basilian Fathers as an Associate and moving to Novi, Michigan, I was working as a Screening Point Manager, managing CATSA employees and checkpoint operations in Canada’s largest and busiest airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport. While my employment at the airport paid off my mortgage and bills, I’ve also pursued an education in theology. I graduated with two Master’s degrees from the University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto, which is where I first met the Basilians. While doing those degrees, I worked as a Teaching Assistant (2009-2013) for an undergraduate course in Catholicism, as an Adjunct Professor (2015) for a graduate course on the Modern History of the Catholic Church, and I tutored two students in their graduate degrees in theology and psychotherapy. It was due to my studies and work in theology that I was exposed to the Second Vatican Council’s documents, and because of them, following five years of discernment, I converted from the Coptic Orthodox Church and joined the Catholic Church in 2012. When the COVID-19 pandemic happened, the travel industry was severely damaged as a result. While I never lost my job, I see this past year and a half of COVID-19 lockdowns and self-isolation as a blessing in disguise, which gave me a whole year opportunity to reflect on and discern my vocation to the priesthood. Earlier this year in January 2021, I decided to finally respond to God’s call and applied to join the Basilians. Little did I know then, when I was alone in my Toronto condo, that I would move to teach theology in Novi in a school bustling with great energy and blessed with the matrimony of Our Lady and the service of the Basilian Fathers. I’m both excited and grateful to be included in the community of Detroit Catholic Central High School. Go Shamrocks! 44

Ms. Sarah Flagg grew up in Farmington Hills, Michigan. After graduating from North Farmington High School, she attended Michigan State University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate. Sarah began her career in education teaching 4th grade in Montgomery County, Maryland. While teaching, Sarah attended Johns Hopkins University and earned her Master’s of Education. Sarah has been a Guidance Counselor at the elementary and high school levels for the past 26 years. (Her last 20 years were with Walled Lake Consolidated Schools). In Sarah’s free time, she enjoys working out, being active outdoors, and entertaining friends and family. Traveling is one of Sarah’s greatest passions. KRISTIN GUNKELMAN My name is Kristin Gunkelman, and I recently joined the Science Department here at Catholic Central. I grew up in MetroDetroit and graduated from Michigan State University. In my free time, I enjoy reading and taking photos. I love spending time outdoors. Hiking, biking, skiing, and kayaking are a few of my favorite outdoor activities. During baseball season, I cheer on the Detroit Tigers. But once football season hits, it becomes less obvious that I’m a Michigander. Of course, I am a Spartan at heart, however, I’m also a huge Green Bay Packer fan. TONY JONES Tony works with the Detroit Catholic Central Admissions Office to recruit, welcome, and retain students, especially those students from diverse backgrounds, with the goal of a healthy enrollment for the school.

Tony grew up in Flint, Michigan, and graduated from Grand Blanc High School. He attended Northwestern University on a football scholarship and graduated with a degree in Learning & Organizational Change. After Northwestern, Tony moved on to the NFL with the Washington Football Team before injury ended his playing career. Tony later joined the University of Michigan Football staff as an operations assistant before being named Recruiting Coordinator and Director of High School Relations. Tony resides in Canton with his wife, Keisha, and daughter, Dallas. TIM PRUSE Tim Pruse joins the Social Studies Department as a History and Government teacher. Tim is a 2001 graduate of Shrine Catholic in Royal Oak and also taught there for eight years. He has also taught and coached football in public schools and joined CC’s JV Football coaching staff this fall. Tim earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics at Western Michigan University and spent time studying in Prague, Czech Republic. He earned his Master’s in Education at Wayne State University and recently completed School Administration certification. Tim has been married for eight years and is blessed with two daughters, ages three and one.

Mr. Pruse is an avid reader and enjoys cooking, working in his vegetable garden, and Detroit sports. He already greatly enjoys the culture at DCC, teamwork within the faculty and student body, and the opportunity to live out his faith in Catholic education. KORÉ SMITH I feel extremely blessed to have joined this amazing Catholic Central community as the newest English teacher! This is my 12th year teaching. I have a Bachelor’s degree in communication arts from Calvin University and a Bachelor’s degree in English and secondary education from Eastern Michigan University. In 2018, I earned my Master’s degree in literacy education from Madonna University. I’ve been married for 13 years and currently live in Canton. I am a proud mother of two wonderful children. My daughter, who is in sixth grade, and my son, who is in second grade, attend All Saints Catholic School. Prior to joining CC, I taught 5/6 ELA at All Saints for three years, and before that, I taught grades 9-12 English at Michigan Virtual Charter Academy for five years.

GDK PROGRAM The Catholic Central GDK Program was launched in 2019 to give our students the opportunity to engage with some larger life questions in a dedicated space at school, with a student group made up of all four grade levels. The mission of the GDK Program is to help our students grow in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. Specifically, we focus on the tenets of Faith, Honor, Compassion, Humility, Character, Determination, Scholarship, Collaboration, and Culture and how they play into everyday life.

The program is geared toward allowing the students to connect socially, providing an additional structure of support for our young men, and also challenging the students to be creative and focused on giving back.

COVID-19 interrupted the first year of the program and kept it from taking place in the 2020 school year, but as the 2021 year began, the GDK Committee was able to redesign the program to fit our needs as a school community, and to maximize the benefit to our students.

The 2021 GDK program kicked off with a successful field day in August. Furthermore, each group will be completing two community service projects of their own choosing. The groups will also have time to discuss the larger themes of GDK in light of current events. These guided discussions will allow them to ensure that they are getting to know and respect those students from backgrounds and viewpoints that may differ from their own.

Kevin Griffin ‘96 Recognized Outstanding Educator

Students today are busier than ever between class, extracurriculars, and preparing for the future, but that did not stop Jack Leuker ’21 from taking time to nominate his former English teacher, Mr. Kevin Griffin ’96, for the University of Chicago’s Outstanding Educator recognition. Upon acceptance to the University of Chicago, Jack was given the option to nominate a teacher for the Outstanding Educator Program. He immediately thought of Mr. Griffin. “Going into my senior year, I wasn’t feeling much excitement about my future,” Jack said. “However, as Mr. Griffin advised me in crafting my college essays, he helped me realize that I have a lot of great opportunities ahead of me, and in doing so got me motivated and excited for my future.” Mr. Griffin also holds his students in high regard, knowing that the exchange of intellect can and should be mutual. “I felt it a high honor to receive this recognition,” said Mr. Griffin. “Jack was both a competitive and an intense student, the kind of student who makes me work harder to become a better educator. He challenged me intellectually each day.” Mr. Griffin models being a man of many interests and believes his deep curiosity about the world engenders critical thinking, which makes classes exciting. Jack is just one student who can speak to how Mr. Griffin’s teaching prepared him for his college career. “I learned how to be engaged in and enjoy class while still taking it seriously. A lot of my previous classes felt like a job, while the classes I had with Mr. Griffin were often the highlight 48

of my day,” Jack shares. “I have only just started classes at the University of Chicago, but I can already see parallels between the teachers I now have and the teachers I had at CC. The details-oriented approach taken by many of the teachers at CC, namely Mr. Griffin, has prepared me very well for my next few years at the University of Chicago.” The University of Chicago’s Outstanding Educator program recognizes high school educators who challenge their students intellectually, open new vistas of discovery, and channel interest into paths for intellectual growth. “My goal as an educator is to motivate students to think critically about the world, as well as their roles in it. I hope that my students walk away from my class with a newfound love for poetry, as well as a deeper appreciation of the magnificence of God’s creation,” shares Mr. Griffin.

Soccer The Varsity Soccer Team, led by Coach Gene Pulice, finished the regular season with a 9-4-3 record and a 2nd Place finish in the Central Division. The Shamrocks began their postseason journey with two exciting wins that came down to penalty kicks, one over local rival, Novi, and the second over South Lyon. Their season came to an end in the District Final.

CC runners earned a 4th Place finish at the CC Invitational, 6th Place at the Holly Invitational, 10th at the Coach Legends Invitational, 4th at the Oakland County Championship, and 1st at the Sturgis Invitational. Furthermore, the Shamrocks won their fourth-consecutive Catholic League Championship and 30th overall for Coach Magni. CC finished in 4th Place at the Regional Championship, narrowly missing the cut for the State Finals. Matthew Atkinson ’23 and Brett

Leidal ’22 individually qualified for the State Championship race. They finished 51st and 53rdrespectively.

Football The Varsity Football Team, led by Coach Dan Anderson, finished the regular season with a 7-2 record and a 2nd Place finish in the Central Division. Season highlights include a thrilling 17-14 win over Naperville Central from Illinois, a seventh-consecutive Boys’ Bowl victory, and a seventh-consecutive victory over Brother Rice. In the playoffs, the Shamrocks defeated Bloomfield Hills before losing to West Bloomfield in the District Championship. They finished with an overall record of 8-3. 2021 Varsity Football Team 50

Tennis - 7th in the State The Varsity Tennis Team, led by Coach Robbie Risdon, finished the season with a 5-4-1 dual meet record and earned a 3rd Place finish in the Catholic League. The Shamrocks finished 3rd at the Utica Eisenhower Invitational, 4th at the Ann Arbor Pioneer Invitational, and 1st at the Saline Invitational. In the postseason, CC qualified for the State Finals after placing 3rd at the Regional Tournament. At the State Finals in Kalamazoo, several players advanced to the quarterfinals, and the Shamrocks
