A Message from the

President

Dear Alumni and Friends, To say 2020 has been a year full of challenges might be the biggest understatement of all time. The COVID-19 pandemic has touched everyone across the globe, either physically, mentally, or both. The Catholic Central community is no exception. 2020 has tested our resolve and forced all of us to adapt in unique and creative ways. At Catholic Central, we’ve met those challenges head on, from the administration, to the staff, and to the fine young men who call themselves Shamrocks. Our faculty and staff continue to go above and beyond to offer the best possible experience for our young men, all while facing challenges in their own lives away from CC. I am incredibly grateful for their efforts and dedication to the mission of Catholic Central. Our students have been nothing short of amazing, understanding the gravity of the situation and realizing that this is a challenge for all. This has been a difficult time, but our students continue to respond. They are learning from the experience and will carry these lessons throughout their lives. In addition to meeting COVID-19 challenges head on, the Catholic Central community has continued to look toward the long-term growth of our campus. A significant step in that direction can be seen from Wixom Road. We recently completed construction of the Wixom Road entrance, improving the aesthetics of the campus and surrounding community and upgrading the safety of the crossing for our students. These types of campus upgrades are an important part of keeping Catholic Central competitive and ensuring that our facilities match the elite education we are providing our students. It is also important to note that the entrance upgrade was funded entirely by private donors. As we move forward with our campus upgrades in the future, it is the generosity of our alumni that makes it possible. With that in mind, I’d like to thank all of our alumni and community partners who have been so generous with their donations this year. This has been a challenging year economically for many people, so each gift is appreciated more than you will ever know. The donations we receive are a critical part of the work we do for so many young men today, and these funds will allow us to continue to provide an elite academic experience for years to come. For more detail on our donations, please see the President’s Report on page (23). As always, thank you again for your support, and God bless you all. Your fellow Shamrock,

Ed Turek ’85 President

BRING US UP TO DATE...

Some years ago, the Aluminator began the practice of featuring biographies of those alumni who were celebrating the 50th Anniversary of their graduation from Catholic Central. In the Fall 2020 Aluminator, we asked the members of the Class of 1970 to submit brief articles providing us an update of what they have done since graduation and to reflect on their time at CC. Below are their submissions. Due to a limited amount of space, we were not able to include all of the submissions in this issue. Therefore, additional submissions from the Class of 1970 will be included in the spring issue. We encourage those members of the Class of 1970 who have not yet submitted an update to do so by February 28, 2021. All submissions should be sent to aluminator@catholiccentral.net. TOM COLLINS ’70

Rita has been a Registered Nurse for 37+ years, including 32+ years for Henry Ford and currently for the U of M Hospital. We have three young adult children. Nick, our oldest, received his Doctoral degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Michigan. Our daughter, Marissa, a two-time cancer survivor, works at Anastasia and Katie’s Coffe Shop (located at 19215 Merriman Road just north of 7 Mile in Livonia), which is run by MiWork Matters, a non-profit organization employing young adults with disabilities. Check out their excellent breakfast and lunch sandwiches and various flavored coffee drinks. Our youngest daughter, Danielle, is pursuing her Doctoral degree in physical therapy at the University of Michigan and will graduate in August 2022. I retired in 2016 from Allen Park High School where I taught for over 30 years and was Math Department Chair. I also taught for four years in the Math Department at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I am thoroughly enjoying this new chapter in my life! For those still actively inclined, I invite you to play racquetball two or three mornings a week (I can supply you with a racket and safety goggles.) at Schoolcraft College in Livonia. I taught religion for 9-½ years, which included several years at Shrine High School in Royal Oak. Also, I served as a youth minister for a teen group sponsored by the Church. During the summers, I worked full time as an administrator for the CYO Boy’s Camp. I changed careers in 1988 and spent the next 31 years as a psychologist and therapist in both residential and outpatient treatment. The last 11 of those years were spent as the clinical director of a small outpatient counseling clinic in Grayling. Also, I married in 1988 and am still with the same spouse (despite my friends’ bets). We lived in Downriver Detroit from 1988-2008 and then moved to our weekend place near Grayling. I lived and worked in Northern Michigan until 2019 and currently reside in Goderich, Ontario (my wife wanted to return to her native land). I became a Canadian citizen in October 2019,

LOOKING FORWARD Greetings Fellow Alumni!

Please Pray With Us! …Catholic Central Cares About You Submit Your Prayer Request See page 72 for details

Jesus Christ, is the Reason for Catholic Central

It’s been an interesting and challenging few months since the last issue of the Aluminator. It’s impossible not to be impacted by the daily news cycle of health concerns, political conflict, and social unrest. But, I write to you today with a message of hope. I believe the future is bright. It will take resolve and effort to get there, but we can do this, and our circumstances will improve. We can see glimpses of a brighter future at our school. There is a magnificent new entrance to the campus, visually and spiritually inspiring the young men of Catholic Central with every visit. The CC community is working to be a positive agent of change in

Campus Crusade Reunions 2020-21 Like so much in society today, our Campus Crusade Reunions are affected by the pandemic. The Catholic Central community prays together for the health and well being of our alumni at campuses throughout the world. Campus Crusade Reunions will return in 2021.

MARY, ALMA MATER Mary, Alma Mater, your sons of Central honor, and trusting in your goodness, we hopefully implore that by your grace we may every day prove that we are men of Mary, Alma Mater. Inspire us evermore. Mary, Alma Mater, your sons of Central honor, and proudly wear your colors, the Royal Blue and White. May valiant Blue and peerless White teach us to be men of Mary, Alma Mater. Inspire us evermore. 12

both big and small ways. There are the continued academic and athletic successes along with the expansion of bus routes and the focus to make CC affordable and accessible to all. Catholic Central is showing resolve and effort to address the daily challenges with an eye to the brighter future. We can all make a meaningful impact on our community. • Be positive. Avoid strong negative reactions to opinions different from your own. Remember that people in our lives love us, and we love them. • Our bonds are stronger than our disagreements. Take this opportunity to call someone you haven’t spoken with in a while. Be representative of your Catholic faith and support those around you. • Smile. Laugh. Inspire. Enjoy the Christmas holiday, and let us all be thankful for our many blessings. When the time is right, your CC community looks forward to seeing you in person. In the meantime, we are all working toward a brighter future. Remember, God loves you, and that’s a wonderful thing!

Alumni Reminisce on School Days Gone By

IT IS WHAT IT IS or IT IS WHAT IT WAS? James N. Lenox ’54 reflects on his days at Catholic Central “In reading the spring 2020 edition of the Aluminator, I was curious about the small print on the front page entitled, ‘A Note from the Editor.’ As editor, you were asking for contributions from us, the alumni, as to what we are doing now. I’ve chosen to instead look back to things I learned from my years at Catholic Central High School beginning in September of 1950 until graduation in June of 1954. Perhaps others could reminisce in a similar way to those formative times in their lives that preceded where they are today. I remember as a freshman taking two DSR busses and one street car to get to the school on Belmont near Woodward Avenue. I would carry my books and my gym bag and stand up on the crowded transports (we were taught to always yield the seats for ladies) on my way from Detroit’s west side. I always looked forward to the trip back home after football practice by stopping at the Woolworth Store at Grand River near the Riviera Theatre for a double chocolate soda.

In my sophomore year, CC moved the school to West Outer Drive in Detroit, and it was there that Fr. Leo McGrady, CSB, who taught English, took an interest in me. He encouraged me to join the Shamrock yearbook staff after football season. Fr. Edward Donoher, CSB got me going in the Glee Club where we even performed on the Uncle Jimmy Stevenson TV show. And to add further diversions in my life, my family moved all the way out to Detroit’s east side near Gratiot and Eight Mile Road where I now only had one trolley car and one bus ride to get to school. That’s when the notion hit me that whether I had a future in business or went to college, it might be a good idea to know how to type - and that’s where Fr. Norman Roy, CSB came in and taught me the ‘home row.’ While I never became a great author, I always liked to write and could always do a good AP lead feature story in college, at the Detroit News, or later in business. My eventual title became Chartered Life Underwriter, and so there it is UnderWRITER. And so here it is, 66 years later, and I’m still writing.” James N. Lenox ’54 Keithville, Louisiana

A Powerful Presence In the Fall 2020 Aluminator, we highlighted how Catholic Central has used the COVID-19 pandemic to forge ahead into the future of education. By integrating technology and adopting an innovative hybrid educational model we have allowed our students to continue learning at the highest level. The hard work of our faculty and the generosity of our alumni ensure that Catholic Central will continue to be a leader of Catholic education well into the future. Now, CC has added a physical “gateway” to its future. The new entrance to our campus tells the story of CC’s mission, its strength, and its determination to continue to educate the souls, minds, and bodies of young men.

The new entrance is simply the beginning. 18

A POWERFUL PRESENCE • WINTER 2021

Our enhanced entrance is a strong and profound welcome to the entire Catholic Central family. CC works hard every day to remain true to its tradition while striving for innovation and creativity in every aspect of that work. The future of CC is full of excitement and hope.

New Entrance and Landscape J.S. Vig Construction Company The new entrance and landscape along Wixom Road was made possible through the generosity of two donors. What we now see entering campus is a result of their passion for Catholic Central and their vision for its future. J.S. Vig Construction Company made sure it all happened. Working with the vision of the landscape architectural team at Grissim Metz Andriese Associates, civil engineer Andy Wozniak, consultant Don Greenwell Jr. ’70, and Integrated Design Solutions, Vig Construction put together stone, steel, soil, lighting, and trees to share the mission of Catholic Central with the world. The focus of the new entrance is the lighted 33’ steel cross, in other words, “The reason for Catholic Central.” The force and the heart of Vig Construction is its president and CC alumni mom, Mrs. Valerie Vig McKeegan. Valerie summed up her work in this way: “Catholic Central is part of our family, and it has helped shape my two sons into strong young men of faith. I am forever grateful. It is the ultimate privilege to work with Catholic Central on such an important legacy project…this project will be the iconic Gateway to CC for the next 100 years.”

Joe McKeegan ’13 graduated from Michigan State University and works for KPMG in Chicago. Jonathan McKeegan ’15 graduated from Michigan State University and is a second-year law student at the University of Notre Dame.

believe in the sacred mission of Detroit Catholic Central High School and who made an investment during the fiscal year July 1, 2019 - June 30, 2020. This was a unique year to say the least. It began in typical fashion with our Shamrocks returning to school in August 2019 and continued with the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Boy’s Bowl in September 2019. The year 2020 began in historical fashion as the Shamrocks shattered the previous sales record for DRIVE by selling more than $600,000 in raffle tickets. Around the same time, the CC Wrestling Team won yet another State Championship, and our Hockey Team and Swim Team were poised to do the same, when it hit — the Pandemic. In March of 2020, the world changed. School was closed for in-person education and our Hockey Team and Swim Team were denied their opportunity to compete for their State Championships. Spring sports were cancelled before they could ever start the season. Our senior class, the Class of 2020, was unable to celebrate their graduation until July 2020, when on a hot summer morning, in the Fr. Richard Elmer, CSB ’46 Stadium, they finally completed their journey. Despite the hardship and heartache, you never lost faith or wavered from your commitment to the cause — the cause of educating young men in the tradition of the Basilian Fathers and the cause of forming boys into men through the virtues of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. This President’s Report celebrates your fidelity and devotion. It recognizes your faith in CC. If your name appears on the following pages, THANK YOU. It is our hope that others will see your name and be inspired to do the same. It is a privilege for us to be members of the CC family and an honor to serve you and our school. L I F E T I M E G I V I N G OF $ 2 5 , 0 0 0 + Detroit Catholic Central High School was founded in 1928 when 260 young men attended the first day of classes at a humble all-boys Catholic high school led by the Fathers of the Congregation of St. Basil. The Mission of CC and the Basilian Fathers was simple - to teach young men the virtues of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. Little did those priests and students know of the unparalleled educational tradition that was about to begin. In 1990, the Mission of CC found a face and a voice like never before when Fr. Richard Elmer, CSB ’46 returned to his Alma Mater to become Director of Alumni Relations & Development. Prior to his return, Fr. Elmer had served CC as a teacher, counselor, athletic director, vice principal, and principal. In 2000, Fr. Elmer became CC’s first President, and his vision for the future of CC changed the course of our history forever. The Fr. Richard Elmer Society was formed in 2014 to recognize Fr. Elmer’s contributions and to honor our alumni, family, and friends who have demonstrated their dedication to the Mission of Detroit Catholic Central High School.

MISSION STATEMENT Catholic Central High School recognizes parents to be the primary educators of their children and collaborates with them in helping their children to learn and grow in the Catholic faith. We provide a safe and challenging environment where mutual respect and high expectations are maintained through the active engagement of students in the learning process. The young men of Catholic Central learn holistically the ideals of the Basilian Fathers – Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge – so that they may become productive members of the Church and society.

In the 30 years that have transpired, much has been learned about how to accomplish this goal. At the core our success is Jesus Christ—the reason for Catholic Central. It has always been our priority to ask our constituents—the CC family of alumni, family, and friends—to pray for the mission of our school and support the mission of our Advancement Office. In 2020, that mission has evolved to form the CC—Cycle of Success. The Cycle of Success includes the following four “Mission Critical” components:

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail!” – Benjamin Franklin Guest Columnist Andrew Hinrichs ’14 The COVID-19 pandemic has tested our nation on many fronts. Unfortunately, even when these events occur, we do not get a break from our daily lives. The globe continues to spin, and we carry on. As normalcy begins to creep back into our lives, I want to allude to the quote written above by Benjamin Franklin. Planning is all about being proactive, analyzing the risk and reducing that risk through a series of strategic decisions. No one saw this pandemic coming, and although I wish it never had occurred, our current dilemma is a prime exhibit as to why planning is so important. Yes, I am talking about financial, tax, and estate planning. I like to call these three pillars “life planning.” Planning gives you the confidence to maintain your status quo throughout times of uncertainty and volatility. I think we can all agree that both of those adjectives are relevant to our current political and economic climate. By having a plan that is tailored to you, your family, and your goals, confidence in your financial decision-making stays afloat even when emotions are running high. At the end of the day, everyone’s situation is different. That’s the beauty of planning; your plan is unique and non-static, which means it is always changing as your needs and wants evolve over time. After doing this for quite some time now, I have realized that by having a clear plan that you are committed to, security and clarity are provided even during cloudy times. I encourage everyone to consider their three pillars so that your goals can remain intact. As we all navigate through our own situations, I wanted to throw out a few ideas that may or may not impact your financial situation. These are some strategies that we, as financial planners, are working on every day. The Catholic Central community is a very generous and giving community. Here are a few creative strategies for alumni to consider: Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD): A qualified charitable distribution allows you to send money directly from your IRA to a charitable institution. A QCD not only satisfies your required minimum distribution, which starts when you turn 72 years old, but also avoids taxation on the money. In this scenario, both the individual and the charitable institution pay no taxes on the donation. This strategy is available to individuals over the age of 70-1/2. Donor Advised Fund: A more complex type of donation strategy. A contribution to this type of an account is considered an irrevocable gift that is strategically positioned for the donation to charitable institutions. In this scenario, you can receive a tax benefit on the donation today and let the account grow over time, which may enhance the size of the benefit once disbursed to the charity down the road. This allows you to make as many or as few donations per year, to as many charities as you want, as long as they are qualified 501(c)(3) organizations. Roth Conversion: A Roth conversion allows an individual to take a specified amount of their qualified (pre-tax) assets and move them into an after-tax position by paying the tax liability right now. Basilian Vocations Catholic Central has a rich history of fostering vocations to the priesthood from within their students and alumni. Many young “Men of CC” have entered into the priesthood with many joining the Congregation of St. Basil, or the Basilian Fathers as they are more commonly known. In fact, the Fall 2011 issue of the Aluminator had a feature article on the history of vocations at Catholic Central up to that point. Over the last decade, even more have joined that tradition. Currently, two of our alumni are discerning vocations to the priesthood and are doing so within the Basilian Fathers. We pray that these two young men will continue to follow God’s plan for them and that other young men, especially those from Catholic Central, will answer God’s call to join the ordained ministries, particularly the Basilian Fathers.

Fathers about a month later. I decided to join the Basilian Fathers because I knew them both from attending Catholic Central and from working at the priest house while I was a student at CC. Getting to know the Basilians personally and seeing their communal life together had a major influence on me once I started to discern a vocation to the priesthood.

I first felt that I had a call to a priestly vocation my sophomore year at Catholic Central. The years that I attended CC (2011-2015) were marked by tragedy. I believe the first time I had the thought of becoming a priest was at the funeral for David Widzinski. I was so impressed by the care and love with which the Basilians handled this tragedy that it really inspired me to want to serve in this way. I loved the Basilians at CC and was drawn by their care for the students and commitment to Catholic Education. Catholic Central was instrumental in my discernment of the priesthood. CC provided me with a foundation of education and prayer that allowed me to make informed decisions and respond to God’s call. Seeing the Basilians at work everyday for four years gave me a view of the religious priesthood I would not have received at any other school. After graduating from CC in 2015, I became a Basilian Associate. I attended the Franciscan University of Steubenville for two years before transferring to the Basilian University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, where I finished my B.A. in Philosophy in December of 2020. I was in the Novitiate from August 2019 to August 2020. I made my first profession of vows on August 8, 2020. Upon graduation, I will be working in campus ministry at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York. In August 2021, I plan to attend St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston for a four-year program.

Dan Ryan ’16 I first felt I was called to the priesthood during my freshman year of college. I was attending Sunday Mass when the thought first entered my head of “what if I became a priest?” After that, it was all I could think about for the rest of Mass and slowly became something constantly on my mind until I reached out to the Basilian 56

Even though I didn’t know I had a vocation to the priesthood while I was at Catholic Central, it still had a big impact on my vocation. Certainly getting to know the Basilian Fathers and seeing their ministry in action was crucial for cultivating my vocation, but beyond that, the roots of my current spiritual and communal life were planted at CC. I think the brotherhood of Catholic Central translates really well to religious life, and being in a community bound together by faith aided my personal spiritual growth and prepared me for life in a priestly community. After graduating from Catholic Central, I attended the University of Pittsburgh. It was there that I first reached out to the Basilians about my vocation in the Fall of 2016. I officially became a Basilian Associate in the summer of 2017. I just graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020 with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in History, the History of Art and Architecture, and Classics, minoring in Religious Studies and Education, and receiving a certificate in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. Since then, I’ve been living with the Basilian Fathers of Novi and am currently studying at the University of Michigan in their Master of Arts in Educational Studies with Secondary Teacher Certification program. After I finish my graduate program next year, the next step is for me to enter the novitiate: a year and a day of prayer, spiritual reflection, and discernment. After that, I will enter the seminary and become a scholastic, beginning my theological studies.

32 YEARS OF CC FRIENDSHIP -

“It’s not the big things, it’s the million little things.” by Angela Hill

The “club” idea came from Bianca Lemon (mother of Mark ’88 and grandmother to John ’22) who thought they should form a Pinochle Club so they would have a “purpose” to get together. After the second meeting, they realized they talked too much, and some of them did not even know how to play pinochle! Without Catholic Central, there would not be a “CC Moms’ No Card Club” as Maureen Scanlon, (also, grandmother to John ’06, Joe ’08, Bill ’09, Michael Scott ’15, Tom Scott ’18, and Daniel Scott ’21) lovingly named the group after their second meeting. Three of these ladies had been Mothers’ Club Presidents at some point—Elaine Dorocak, Janice Sharkey, (mother of Dan ’88 and 24-year beloved veteran CC faculty member) and Peggy Koppy, (mother of Jeff ’87). All of the ladies, including Peggy Boland (mother of Denis ’87 and Patrick ’88 and the queen organizer of the Rummage Sales), Dolores Bsharah (mother of Larry ’88), and Barbara Karamon (mother of Marty ’88), were loyal CC moms who met twice a week for a year to organize the archives of pictures and newspaper clippings for the school. This is how one of the women described the friendship of these ten special women that has lasted a 32-year test of time. Their young sons started as freshmen in the 1983-1984 school year at Catholic Central, and their involvement in the Mothers’ Club resulted in a sisterhood that is still going strong. When Elaine Dorocak (mother of Mike ’88) and Maureen Scanlon (mother of six CC graduates -Mike ’76, Daniel ’77, James ’78, Jerry ’81, Martin Jr. ’82, and Thomas ’88) sat in the parking lot on Breakfast Drive after the senior all-night party and cried, something had to be done to keep these ladies together.

They formed lasting friendships through their sons and their service. Diane Dugas (mother of Brian ’88 and grandmother of AJ ’20, Vincent Hill ’20, and Andrew Memmer ’21) proudly described heading up the Boys’ Bowl Ad committee with her cohorts, including Heather Pinto (mother of Mark ’86, Perry ’88, and Jeff ’89), where they worked diligently to “sell the most Boys’ Bowl ads ever in the history of CC,” or so they say! These women have an enviable union that has grown through many good times, including attending and being involved in the CC fashion shows over the years. The bonus of their friendship was the bond their husbands formed, which meant they occasionally got to join in on some of the fun!

I recently had the opportunity to have lunch with all these ladies. I just watched as they reminisced about all of the good times at CC. There is a special love- yes, a sisterhood- that these women share. In fact, all of the anniversaries of the group’s formation have been decked-out, special celebrations. On their 20th Anniversary, Bianca asked them each to give three words that described their friendships. She put their words into a poem and made a keepsake book for each of them. “Our journey together has been twenty years growing with loyal, They have seen each other through many joyous occasions,

SHAMROCKS Visit the Miracle League On Saturday, October 17, members of CC’s Baseball Program and the Varsity Football Team visited the Miracle League of Plymouth to help with their Halloween Parade. The mission of the Miracle League of Plymouth is to enrich our community by providing education and social development through high quality recreation programs, including baseball, for individuals with special needs and their families, as well as to foster peer relationships through players and “buddy” interactions so that barriers to friendship are removed.

Canned Food Drive The Canned Food Drive is an annual event hosted by the Student Council during the first week of November. Unfortunately, this year’s drive was cut short due to COVID-19 restrictions on students being in the school building. Nonetheless, our community was still able to collect more than 2,000 food items and over $1,200 which benefitted Loaves and Fishes of Southwest Detroit during the holiday season.

CC WELCOMES New Faculty Members Alana Bahoura - Theology

Colleen Poullélaouen - English

I have had a passion to teach ever since I was young. As a former elementary teacher with a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education from Oakland University, my love for God’s children grew immensely as I continued to minister in the Church and schools in various capacities. This deep passion has led me to pursue a Master’s degree in Pastoral Studies at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, which, in turn, has brought me to Catholic Central as a Theology teacher.

I began my academic life at St. Edith grade school and then went on to Ladywood High School from where I graduated in 1991. During these 12 years, I studied classical ballet where I fell in love with the French language and dreamed of becoming a French and English teacher. Then, I was on to Albion College where I received a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in French and English for Secondary Education, graduating in 1995. After graduation, I was offered the chance to live in Toulouse, France, working for Siemens Automotive, where I became immersed in French culture/language. Upon my return, I taught at Walled Lake Western High School, teaching both English and French, and in 2001, I moved to the east coast where I taught French at Greenwich High School in Connecticut. In 2006, I married my French husband in France, and ultimately, we became expats in Romania for four years. During our time abroad, we were blessed with the birth of our wonderful sons (and future Shamrocks), Liam (age 12) and Flynn (age 10). After returning to the U.S., I taught 6th grade English/Literature at Our Lady of Sorrows, where both our sons are enrolled. Ultimately, just this past summer, God blessed me with the opportunity to teach at Detroit Catholic Central, the place my brother, uncles, and cousins all called their home, whether it was on Outer Drive or Breakfast Drive. Today, I am overjoyed to call CC my home!

Kendall Carter - Math This is my first year here at Catholic Central but my third year teaching math. I fell in love with math in 9th grade Geometry, and ever since then, I knew I wanted to be a math teacher. I’m so happy I chose this career because I cannot imagine doing anything else. It is truly my dream job. I currently live in Allen Park, but I grew up in Westland. I attended Wayne Memorial High School, where my brother is currently a senior, Go Zebras! I earned my Bachelor’s degree at Eastern Michigan University and plan on going back to earn my Master’s degree sometime in the near future. My first two years teaching were at St. Francis Cabrini in Allen Park. I am so blessed to be here at CC and am so thankful for the opportunity to teach here! Rebecca Joseph - Theology I come from a big family, and I’m proud to have had two nephews graduate from CC and one currently attending (Charlie ’10, Eli ’14, and Luke ’23). I am a Spartan two times over, earning a Bachelor’s and a Master’s from MSU. After many years, I returned to school at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit to earn my M.A. in theology. I love seeking truth, beauty, and goodness, especially in nature. So when I’m not working, you will most likely find me walking or hiking at Kensington Park. I retired from public school, where I taught English and reading for 30 years. I am very happy to be at Catholic Central teaching theology!

Julia Ribits - Art I taught art at Ladywood High school for many years and also was the scenic artist at Meadow Brook Theater and a float builder for the Parade Company. Most recently, I was teaching at Our Lady of the Lakes. I was so excited to become a part of CC! I have wanted to teach here for as long as I can remember. Everyone has been so welcoming, and the students are great. I know this is a challenging year for all schools and educators, but the community and support here are the BEST! I am thankful to be here.
