1965 - MIKE MADDEN and RICH CZOP won gold medals in 3-on-3 basketball at the Michigan Senior Olympics. They will play with Mike’s “Code Blue” team at the National Senior Games in Albuquerque, New Mexico next June.

1984 - ROB MARTIN and CC English teacher Mary Stuart pulled together a team to write, film, and edit a four to seven minute film in the 48 Hour Film Project. The team consisted of Martin, Stuart, CC English teacher Pete Shaheen, Stephen Juncai ‘18, and Tommy Wiaduck ‘18, as well as Stuart’s daughter Caelan, brother Tim Heslip, and nephew Kevin Heslip. The genre “Thriller/Suspense” was drawn on Friday night, and by Sunday evening, the film entitled, “Variant” was delivered to be judged. After premiering in Royal Oak on the big screen at The Main Art Theater, the team took home an award for Best Thriller/Suspense.

1986 - MIKE BALMFORTH, KRIS BRUECK, and CHRIS CRESPI celebrated their 50th birthdays in the fall by taking a golf trip to Scotland, playing such famous courses as St. Andrews, Kingbarn and Gullane.

THE GROOVY ’70s 1975 - BRYAN GRULEY completed his new novel, Bleak Harbor. It is available for preorder at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Indie Bound. 1976 - MIKE DUGGAN, Mayor of the City of Detroit, was honored at the Detroit Goodfellows Tribute Breakfast at Cobo Center in September 2018. The Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit bestowed its prestigious Edward H. McNamara Goodfellow of the Year Award on Mayor Duggan for his significant contributions to the community.

1985 - ROBERT HEIMBUCH, Chief of the Juvenile Division in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, recently received the Robert Heimbuch ‘85 State Bar of Michigan 2018 Champion of Justice Award. This award is given to practicing lawyers and judges of integrity and adherence to the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession, superior professional competence, and an extraordinary professional accomplishment that benefits the nation, the state, or the local community in which the lawyer or judge lives.

1987 - JOHN GARCZYNSKI has been living in France since 1993 with his wife of 25 years and three children. He moved to France following his studies in Economics and French at the University of Michigan. John earned an M.B.A. at the prestigious Institut d’Etudes Politiques (which all of France’s presidents after Charles de Gaulle have attended) and a joint Master’s degree in Large Scale Project Management from France’s top business school, HEC, and from the aeronautical engineering school, Supaero. He has worked in International Project Management in sales and marketing, Human Resources, IT, and Operations in banking and heavy industry. John is currently developing a Project Management Consulting activity as Project Director within a French-based Project Management Consulting firm. His wife has developed her own activity teaching French as a second language to both international children integrating into the French school system and adults who wish to increase, based on an individually tailored approach, their mastery of the French language.

In April 2018, John met with Fr. John Wheeler, C.S.B. ’57 in Paris at the famous café Les Deux Magots, where Ernest Hemingway once wrote. John stated in a message, “For the record, it was through Fr. Wheeler’s initiatives and perseverance that I had the opportunity to come to France for the first time in 1986 with Catholic Central’s summer abroad exchange program. Thanks to his work, or even his vocation, to that of Madame Poirier, and to the support of my parents,

2001 - SEAN GENRICH was recently the lead Production Designer in charge of art design for Eminem’s two most recent videos, “Fall” and “Lucky You,” which were shot in Detroit. Sean currently lives in Los Angeles, California, and has worked on several tv shows, videos, and commercials.

2007 - DAVID BUSHART received his Ph.D. in Molecular & Integrative Physiology from the University of Michigan. David’s dissertation research involved the David Bushart ‘07 development of new therapies to treat a group of neurological disorders called spinocerebellar ataxias. He is continuing his work as a research scientist in the Department of Neurology at the University of Michigan. 2007 - CHAD WILHELM graduated and completed all his boards from the Palmer Chiropractic School to become a Doctor of Chiropractic. He will be practicing in Livonia, Michigan.

This is always a fabulous time of year around the school as first semester is wrapping up, the school is decorated, the band Christmas concert occurs, and winter sports are getting into full swing. It is also a time to reflect on the past year and plan for the future. As an Alumni Association, we were proud to sponsor several events and activities over the past year, and it is fun to see how some of these have developed from simple ideas in the past into prominent, annual traditions of CC. In the fall we have two great events – the Boys’ Bowl Mass & Breakfast (BBM&B) and Memorial Mass. The BBM&B was started by the late Gerry Di Ponio ’65 almost 20 years ago as a simple, fun way to get some alumni together at Pontiac’s Wisner Stadium before the Boys’ Bowl football game. Now, it has expanded into an event that is approaching 1,000 people in attendance. It is always a fun and welcoming day as we celebrate Mass in the gym, serve breakfast to hundreds of students, alumni, parents, and even the occasional opposing fan. This event also includes the annual Athletic Hall of Fame inductions, which have given an additional sense of history and legacy to the day. The Memorial Mass was the brainchild of Carmine Palombo ’70 over a decade ago as a way to celebrate the lives of alumni and members of the CC family who had died within the past year. Like the BBM&B, this has grown every year and now sees more than 200 people join together in the school chapel in late October to smile, celebrate, cry, and share memories and camaraderie with others in the CC family. We also now share a great brunch together after the Mass, as so many people wanted to continue the fellowship and conversation even after the Mass itself ended. Every January we start the Alumni Association Basketball League (AABL), which evolved from some evening pickup games on Breakfast Drive 15 years ago to what now welcomes 150-200 alumni and others to CC every Sunday night from January through March. This collection of “has beens” and “never weres” tries to avoid injury, get some exercise, and just have some fun pretending we are young again. The Ash Wednesday Mass and Dinner, similar to the BBM&B and Memorial Mass, has grown into an annual event that many look forward to every year, and weather permitting, always sees a large crowd wanting to gather together as a community to begin the Lenten season.

2018 Shamrocks In Chicago Reunion On November 7, 2018, down the street from The Vic Theatre, over 25 alumni gathered for a heavy dose of CC camaraderie while sharing many stories, laughs, and enjoying good food and spirits at the neighborhood gathering spot of Sheffield’s. A special thank you goes out to Bryan Gruley ’75 who helped organize this fun night out. We look forward to gathering again in Chicago in 2019!

The boys from 6-5-6-5 WEST OUTER DRIVE came out in large numbers, proudly representing the Class of ’68 over Boys’ Bowl Homecoming Weekend. With many classes gathering for the annual homecoming weekend celebration at CC, the Class of 1968 joined the festivities to celebrate their golden anniversary of graduation as sons of Mary, Alma Mater. CC men from all over the country came home for this wonderful weekend of CC brotherhood and camaraderie. A big “thank you” goes out to Steve Foley, Jim Gibbons, Rick Repicky, and Brian Rorai for planning and organizing this grand reunion. Classmates and guests were treated to a variety of activities ranging from attending the Boys’ Bowl Assembly at CC, a wonderful reunion gathering at the Sylvan Lake Community Center, a great time at the homecoming reunion gathering at CC, the Boys’ Bowl Mass & Breakfast, the Athletic Hall of Fame Inductions that included the 1968 State Championship Hockey Team, and of course, the Boys’

The Alumni Dinner, is one of the first events the Alumni Association started over 30 years ago, and still continues strong today. Held each April or May, this evening honors one or two alumni of the year and sees a loud and energetic pre-dinner cocktail session, followed by a great meal and some heartfelt tributes and speeches.

Nice job, boys! Here’s to your next 50 years!

All of these events have grown and changed over time and will continue to do so. But what has allowed them to become successful and sustainable is the passion and commitment so many of us alumni have for our alma mater and our classmates. We hope to see many of you at these and other events during 2019. Have a safe and healthy Christmas and New Year and take a little time to be thankful for how CC has been part of your life and continues to make a difference for so many young men.

CC Alumni Association Set for 11th Annual Retreat For Men The CC Alumni Association is organizing its 11th Annual Retreat For Men. All alumni, current students, dads, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, nephews, and cousins are welcome. The retreat will be held the weekend of January 11-13, 2019, at the St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center. Come explore our Catholic faith in a personal way as the retreat will begin at 6:00 pm on Friday, January 11, and conclude at 12:00 pm on Sunday, January 13. CC Alumni Association Softball League (AASL) 2018 Season Recap and 2019 Sign-up Information Thank you to all the CC alumni and dads who made the 2018 Alumni Association Softball League (AASL) season such a great success! Congratulations to Team Babicz for securing the 3-Peat! The AASL started five years ago and consists of teams made up of CC alumni and dads. A special “thank you” to John Dwyer ’09 and Aaron Babicz ’93 for running the league. Also, thank you to the CC Baseball Staff, Athletic Department, and Maintenance Crew for the use and up keep of the fields. Season 6 of the AASL starts in late May 2019. All games are played on CC’s campus. For this coming season, the teams will be comprised of CC alumni, fathers of alumni, and/or current CC dads. Annual Alumni Association Memorial Mass & Breakfast The CC Alumni Association Memorial Mass & Breakfast was held on October 28th, 2018. This annual Mass and breakfast is in correlation with the Feast of All Saints, and we, as a CC Community, come together to remember and honor those alumni and family members who have passed away. L I F E T I M E G I V I N G OF $ 2 5 , 0 0 0 + Detroit Catholic Central High School was founded in 1928 when 260 young men attended the first day of classes at a humble all-boys Catholic high school led by the Fathers of the Congregation of St. Basil. The Mission of CC and the Basilian Fathers was simple - to teach young men the virtues of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. Little did those priests and students know of the unparalleled educational tradition that was about to begin. In 1990, the Mission of CC found a face and a voice like never before when Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 returned to his Alma Mater to become Director of Alumni Relations & Development. Prior to his return, Fr. Elmer had served CC as a teacher, counselor, athletic director, vice principal, and principal. In 2000, Fr. Elmer became CC’s first President, and his vision for the future of CC changed the course of our history forever. The Fr. Richard Elmer Society was formed in 2014 to recognize Fr. Elmer’s contributions and to honor our alumni, family, and friends who have demonstrated their dedication to the Mission of Detroit Catholic Central High School.

MISSION STATEMENT Catholic Central High School recognizes parents to be the primary educators of their children and collaborates with them in helping their children to learn and grow in the Catholic faith. We provide a safe and challenging environment where mutual respect and high expectations are maintained through the active engagement of students in the learning process. The young men of Catholic Central learn holistically the ideals of the Basilian Fathers â€“ Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge â€“ so that they may become productive members of the Church and society.

A Christmas Prayer to Catholic Central by Fr. William Riegel, C.S.B.

There is no season of the Church’s year of grace so powerful as the images and symbols of Christmas/epiphany all inviting us into the mystery of this season. The Church becomes a poet immersing us in her verses. Light AND darkness, dreams and visions, celestial BEINGS WITH THEIR messages, STARS MOVING IN arranged paths, KINGS AND PEASANTS, TREASURES that foreshadow; they ALL emerge to engulf us and DRAW US more closely to the light. This entire season proclaims so much to us in our troubled and divided world. Yes, even our Church is experiencing a time of trial, purification, and cleansing. I invite you to reflect on two stories from Luke and Matthew that give us both solace and challenge in this season. Both give direction to the division that marks our times. The first is the appearance of the angels to the shepherds in Luke. The message first comes to the Jews in the person of the shepherds. Notice, it is not to the political or religious centers of Judaism, but rather to the marginalized people of the day. These shepherds could hardly be counted as the “religious” of their day. It is to these simple shepherds that the first news of redemption is heralded. And so they “journeyed” to Bethlehem and truly “saw” the one who would finally fulfill their hopes, dreams, and desires, the Messiah! Matthew describes another journey, one that takes us far beyond those people of the first covenant. This time, gentiles, foreigners, and magi, who are led by a strange and mysterious star. The one they seek is God incarnate, the One whose message is to “all” of God’s newly chosen of the world. The age old divisions, walls of separation, nationality, language, race, and culture, have been broken down. As St. Paul would have it, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28) It is this same child we welcome once again in this season: “Light from light, true God from true God,” one like us in all things but sin. It is embedded in the mission of Catholic Central that each and every student who “journeys” to our doors, be welcomed and be led, like those first shepherds and wise men, to Christ who alone is the one we all are led to adore! Now to Christ who was, who is, and who is to come, the lord of time and history, be endless praise forever and ever! Amen! Alleluia!

National Merit Commended Students

National Merit Semifinalists

Detroit Catholic Central High School is proud to announce that five seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Competition after taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

Three Detroit Catholic Central High School students were named Semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Competition. About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2017 Preliminary Sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The Semifinalists will have the chance to compete for 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth about $31 million. Over 90% of the Semifinalists are expected earn Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title.

Commended students are among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered this year’s competition, which places these young men in the top 3% of the nation.

Catholic Central Advanced Placement Scholars for 2017-2018 School Year

For more than 30 years, the Catholic Central family has been participating in a 1.5 mile run for charity known as the Shamrock Shuffle. For more than 20 years, we have partnered with Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. On the Friday of Boys’ Bowl week, CC students, faculty, and staff walked and ran in the Shamrock Shuffle and raised $7,695.87 for Make-A-Wish. In total over the last 20+ years, CC has raised $162,020.87 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. We would like to thank Mr. Steve Lemieux and Mr. Larry Schulte for organizing this event, Mr. Tony Magni and the Cross Country Team for all of their efforts, and all those who donated for their generosity.

Law Day On October 23, 2018, CC social studies teacher Craig McMichael ’01 and 35 seniors participated in Law Day. The annual event is hosted by Hon. Richard Hathaway ’68 and Hon. Sean Cox ’75. The day provides the opportunity for students to meet with various CC alumni lawyers and judges and to sit in on cases at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice in Detroit.

On Monday, October 22nd, Hayden Kibbey ’19 completed his journey to Eagle Scout status when he became Eagle #284. As has been documented and featured in the past few issues of the Aluminator, the project that enabled Hayden to earn such an honor is the CC Veterans Memorial which was dedicated on Memorial Day this past May.
