A Message from the

President

Dear Alumni and Friends, This issue celebrates the heritage of the Basilian Fathers and their 200 years of incredible service to our world.

When I think back to my time as a student, it is impossible to imagine Catholic Central without the Basilians who impacted me, Fr. Ned Donoher, CSB, Fr. John Menner, CSB, Fr. John Ward, CSB ‘59, and Fr. Richard Elmer, CSB ‘46 to name only a few. We are incredibly blessed to still have a strong Basilian presence in our hallways, which we do not take for granted. Fr. Patrick Fulton, CSB, Fr. Dennis Kauffman, CSB, Fr. Rob Moslosky, CSB, Fr. Dennis Noelke, CSB ‘71, and Fr. John Wheeler, CSB ‘57 continue to impact and drive our school culture and spiritual strength.

One of the most impactful walls in our building is the collage of Basilian photos that sits outside of our faculty lounge and adjacent to the Chapel. This location is appropriate, as we know those men loved their faith, and we also know that the impact they had on their students serves as an inspiration for the lay men and women who work hard every day to continue their mission.

There is also a clear example of the impact the Basilians have had on the more than 30 lay alumni who have chosen Catholic Central as their professional path and serve our school in numerous capacities.

We continue to build on the legacy of the Basilians with the STEM center breaking ground on June 5 at Noon.

I hope you will consider joining us for this pivotal moment in our school history. The addition to our current building will, without a doubt, transform the education of thousands of young men, and we know the impact those Shamrocks can and will have on the world.

Ten priests, 200 years ago, have changed all of our lives. Let us find motivation in that fact and continue our work to impact the lives of every young man who enters the doors to our school through the teachings of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.

Staying Connected With Your Classmates THE PSYCHEDELIC ’60s 1961 - FRED LAUCK graduated from the University of Detroit Law School in 1969. He has been recognized by the State Bar of Michigan as a Champion of Justice. He was also recently recognized by the publication Michigan Lawyers Weekly as a member of the Michigan Hall of Fame as a Trial Lawyer.

1967 - PATRICK BERRY recently concluded his 50-year career in education, having taught more than 12,000 students and mentoring 12 future educators.

Pat taught English, speech, and debate for 33 years at Plymouth Salem High School. During that time, he also taught evening speech classes at Schoolcraft College for many years. In 2005, Pat returned to Eastern Michigan University where he earlier earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in communication. He taught public speaking to EMU Honor College students, an experience he likens to a teacher’s “heaven on earth” experience.

Pat was humbled to be honored as the Honors College Faculty Member of the Year in 2012. Pat also served on the EMU Alumni Association Board of Directors for ten years, including four years as president. He attributes the foundation for his career to his CC experience, especially as a member of the band. Pat credits his band director, William B. Watts ‘40, for believing in him, motivating him to attend college, and becoming an educator. Throughout his career and his life, he has tried to live his best life by practicing Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. “Thank you, CC. You changed my life.”

1972 - JOHN SHAW passed away suddenly on January 4, 2022. Before he died, he wrote an update of his life that he intended to submit to the Aluminator. “I went to Michigan State for one year, and finding MSU too urban and crowded, I transferred to Michigan Tech. When I graduated with a B.S. in Biology and General Sciences and high school teaching credentials, I went to the Cheyenne Reservation in Montana as a volunteer and taught high school sciences for two years. I then moved to Duluth, Minnesota, and taught and coached for one more year before moving to St Paul. I took some additional technology classes and worked for a software development company. After working there for three years, I started a software development company with two partners. Finding that silent financial partners don’t exist, after two years, my other partner and I started another company, BMI. I married my fabulous wife, Anita, in 1984 and have two wonderful daughters. We enjoyed frequent travel to Mexico and Europe. After 15 years with BMI, I found I was managing people instead of creating software and sold my controlling interest. I went back out as a sole proprietor for another 19 years. I began slowing the business down in 2015 and completely retired in 2018. My wife and I are snowbirds to Venice, Florida. Minnesota winters can be very cold, dark, and long. I am able to play quite a bit of golf. I now have two grandchildren and spend as much time as possible with them (especially with Covid and its safety protocols). I continue to enjoy woodworking and have been getting into making toys.”

1973 and 1975 - Forty-seven years ago, five CC graduates formed a rock band, The Ritz, that played an epic show in a Detroit area bar shortly before they all went off to college. Now four of the originals who made up The Ritz are rejoining for a reunion show at the Token Lounge in Westland on Saturday, October 1. 1975 - HON. SEAN COX was inducted as the Chief Judge for U.S. District Court for Eastern Michigan. This is a role that many law professionals aspire to, but few have claimed.

Judge Cox credits his accomplished career to the work ethic he inherited from his parents and the values he learned at Catholic Central.

1979 - KEVIN STEPHENS was appointed to the Board of Directors of Keysight Technologies, Inc., a leading technology company that delivers advanced design and validation solutions to help accelerate innovation to connect and secure the world.

1977 - BILL WYMAN and his wife of nearly 38 years, Theresa, still reside in Princeton, New Jersey. Not yet ready for retirement, he continues to stay young by spending time with his three grandchildren, Penny Rose (aged 3–1/2), Stella Therese (aged 1–1/2), and Eddie Robert (almost 1-year-old). Watching them grow, they bring him and his wife such incredible joy. What a blessing they have been!

1981 - JOE THOMAS visited CC on February 8, 2022, to cheer for the Shamrock Basketball Team as they faced archrival Brother Rice. He cheered extra loud for the sons of his friends and former teammates: T.J. Nadeau ’24, son of Todd ’80, and Kevin Wendt ’22, son of Greg ’81.

1979 - JEFF BLANZY is still hanging in there in his television career. He is entering his 34th year as a sports anchor. After stops in Lima and Toledo, Ohio, he moved to the ABC station in Chicago in 1998 and then, six years ago, made the jump to NBC. Life in Chicago is awesome, but the Detroit area will always be his “real home.”

THE TECHNO ’80s continued 1984 - MARK MESSNER was selected by the National Football Foundation as a member of the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2022.

After an All-American career at CC, Mark started all 49 games at defensive tackle for the Michigan Wolverines from 1985-1988. He was named firstPhoto credit Detroit News - AP team All-Big Ten all four years, was a member of two Big Ten Championship teams and played in the 1986 Fiesta Bowl, 1988 Hall of Fame Bowl, and both the 1987 and 1989 Rose Bowls. Mark was a two-time first-team All-American, was a finalist for the 1988 Rotary Lombardi Award, and was selected as the 1988 Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in the sixth round of the 1989 NFL Draft.

Mark was inducted into the CC Athletic Hall of Fame in the inaugural Class of 2007.

THE VIRTUAL ’00s 2008 - REV. JOSEPH SHEERAN was ordained a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 12, 2022, after being called to serve as Co-Pastor of Woodland Park Presbyterian Church in Seattle, Washington in January.

2018 - CASEY AMBROSE was appointed to the Walled Lake City Council to fulfill the term left vacated after his father’s passing in October 2021.

Casey, the youngest member in the history of the Council, and his two sisters assumed ownership of their father’s restaurant, Casey’s of Walled Lake.

2019 - CAMERON AMINE became a two-time NCAA All-American after placing 4th at the NCAA Wrestling Championship in Detroit.

He also finished 2nd in the Big Ten and helped lead the Michigan Wolverines to the program’s first team Big Ten Championship since 1973.

Michigan finished 2nd at the NCAA Championship.

2020 - JOSH EDMOND qualified for the NCAA Wrestling Championship in Detroit and helped lead the Missouri Tigers to the Big 12 Championship with a 5th Place finish individually.

2015 - MYLES AMINE completed his collegiate wrestling career with a 2nd Place finish at the NCAA Championship in Detroit. Myles is a five-time NCAA All-American. He also won his second individual Big Ten Championship and led the Michigan Wolverines to the program’s first team Big Ten Championship since 1973.

2015 and 2021 - IKE MARCHIE ‘15 and DAVID IBEGBU ‘21 recently came home to CC for a visit. It is always great having Shamrock Alumni in the house!

THE CONNECTED ’10s 2010 - CHRISTOPHER MacARTHUR and Kelsey Sorenson welcomed their first child, Theodore Mark, on August 18, 2021. They currently live in Virginia, but Christopher insists Theo will be a Shamrock!

2014 - MICHAEL VALLESPIR married Monique Rickel on May 21, 2021, at Our Lady of Sorrows in Farmington. The happy couple and family celebrated their reception on October 15th, 2021.

CC FACULTY TONY JONES and his wife, Keisha, welcomed their son, Tru, on March 17, 2022. He weighed 8 lbs., 7 oz., and measured 21 ¾ inches long. Tru joins big sister, Dallas. Tony works in our Admissions Office as the Director of Community Outreach and Retention.

Alumni Reminisce on School Days Gone By

WHERE DID THE YEARS GO? Tom Durkee ’60 visited Catholic Central on Boys’ Bowl Sunday in September 2021. He brought with him the model sailboat that was hand-built by his father, Myron ’29, during his days at CC. When Tom visited he shared with us a written story entitled: The Life of Myron Frances Durkee ’29 Myron Frances Durkee ’29, a member of the first graduating class from the brand new Catholic Central High School of Detroit, grew up on Townsend Street on Detroit’s eastside. His father, Tom’s grandfather, worked for the Ford Motor Company. Myron was one of 13 children.

At the age of 14, Myron built the boat (pictured right) and named it “The King.” He entered it in the annual Model Boat Race on Belle Isle and won 1st Place for both Best Boat and Fastest Boat as The King won the race.

At the same age of 14, Myron was a hard-working delivery boy for the Detroit Times, earning enough to pay his own tuition at St. Charles High School. He was content at St. Charles, but his life changed in the spring of his junior year when the brand new Catholic Central High School opened on Harper Avenue. Myron was able pay his own tuition as he made the move to the new school.

Upon graduating from CC, Myron enrolled at the University of Detroit, planning to study architecture. While at U of D, he continued to work for the Detroit Times, a decision that would have a profound impact on his life. At his father’s encouragement, Myron gave a job at Ford Motor Company a try, but after just two weeks, decided his future was with The Detroit Times. It was a decision he never regretted because he was blessed with a job all through the Great Depression.

At the age 20, Myron met his future wife, Catherine, who was a student at Marygrove College. After seven years of courtship, Myron and Catherine married. They were blessed with four children: Ann, Tom, Mary Helen, and Cathy.

Myron was a man, a holy man, a CC man, who set an example for his family by attending daily mass and providing for his family.

It was Myron’s wish to send his only son to CC, his alma mater.

Tom, admittedly, was not the best student but did well in math and theology. Myron promised the teachers at Gesu School that Tom would go to Holy Communion twice a day if they would help him get admitted to CC. Myron inspired Tom by taking him to see CC play the famous Boystown Team from Omaha, Nebraska, in the annual Boys’ Bowl.

Tom did do well enough, and Myron’s wish came true as Tom was granted admission to CC in the fall of 1956.

Thanks to a generous gift from Tom ’60 and Pat Durkee, the Durkee family is recognized with a commemorative brick in our Mary Garden.

I married Jan (Hermann), the love of my life and my soulmate, in August of 1975. We were blessed with three beautiful daughters: Emily (1977), Anne (1980), and Jennifer (1986). We are grandparents to seven grandchildren, six

I retired from The Kroger Company in 2017 as the Vice President of Fresh Dairy and Network Optimization. During my career, I was an active member of the International Dairy Foods Association, where I served as Chairman of the Milk Industry Foundation, as well as the Chairman of the International Dairy Foods Association. In 2014, I was fortunate enough to receive the Soaring Eagle Leadership Award from the dairy industry.

Today, Jan and I enjoy spending time with our family and friends and exploring the world through travel. My hobbies include golf, pickleball, fitness training, and collecting Kentucky Bourbon. I am still an avid Red Wings fan. We belong to the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption parish in Covington, Kentucky.

I will always be grateful for the wonderful experiences and education that I received from Catholic Central.

Annually in March, over 100 Shamrock alumni and guests unite in sunny and beautiful Venice, Florida, for a reunion started almost two decades ago by members of the Class of ’55 and hosted by Terry ’55 and Karen Brady.

The past several years, Mike ’71 and Donna Pachota, and their son, Justin, have hosted this great gathering at their relaxing and wonderful restaurant, Sharky’s on the Pier, on Venice Beach.

Shamrock Bar Association On March 24, 2022, the Shamrock Bar Association gathered at CC for mass, camaraderie, and a discussion on “Practicing Law in the Zoom Environment.”

“Give me liberty, or give me death.” - Patrick Henry, 1765 Guest Columnist Joseph P. Corriveau ’88 Patrick Henry is credited with having the first recorded trust in our new nation. However, trust origins go back to the time of Roman Law. As far back as 800 A.D., English peasants created this tool to protect themselves from abuses of Kings and Queens who stole their land in the name of the Crown.

As an estate planning attorney, I like to think that Patrick Henry uttered these famous words knowing, when he faced death, that his family would be protected by his creation of the trust.

Why, then, are so many people still unclear as to what it means? Studies continually show that nearly half of all Americans pass away without a plan in place. A large percentage of those who do have only a will.

I believe people fail to plan out of a lack of knowledge. I educate people everyday of the benefits of a properly funded estate plan and the avoidance of the costly pitfalls that result with one not in place.

I am often asked the same questions and have comprised a list which I hope you find helpful.

1. “Do I need anything more than a Will?”

• A Will is simply an invitation to Probate Court after you pass. While the expressed intentions may be carried out, your estate will still suffer the delays and costs I have found to be as much as 8% of the deceased gross estate.

2. “What happens if I become disabled?”

• If one is unable to make either financial or health decisions, another person must be granted that authority. Prior to the onset of this disability, this power can be given in the form of a Durable Power of Attorney. After the disability manifests itself, one will most likely have to incur the cost of petitioning the court for an appointment of Guardian and Conservator.

3. “Will my estate be subject to estate or inheritance tax?”

• Currently, the Federal Estate tax exemption is $12.06 million. There is no inheritance tax in Michigan.

4. “Am I giving away my assets by placing them in a Revocable Trust?”

• A trust means that you do not hold title to your assets; your trust does. The transfer of title does not mean you lose control.

You maintain the same power to buy, sell, transfer, borrow, and do whatever you wish with YOUR ASSETS. There is no difference between the day you place the asset in the trust than the day before you did so.

5. “How do I gift my favorite Catholic Central?”

• Within your Revocable Trust specific bequests can be made in different amounts, percentages, or dates of distribution.

6. “How much should I expect to pay for an Estate?”

• I charge a flat fee depending on the type of plan you choose.

The creation of an estate plan is one of the greatest gifts you can give. Without a plan in place, you may have a costly and unavoidable nightmare.

LET’S GO RED WINGS! was cheered loud and proud by 145 Shamrock faithful at the January 21, 2022, Detroit Red Wings vs. Dallas Stars hockey game at Little Caesars Arena (LCA).

It was CC Night at LCA! A great night of entertaining hockey and CC camaraderie was on display as the game went into overtime with the hometown Red Wings competing hard, however coming up a goal short to the Stars 5-4.

One of the highlights of the night was watching the excitement and thrill of young Harry Price ride the zamboni all decked out in his CC Hockey jersey!

This annual Red Wings hockey game gathering of the Shamrock Nation is one to attend.

The 16th Annual Athletic Hall of Fame celebration is scheduled for Boys’ Bowl Sunday, October 2, 2022, and will include the annual Gerry Di Ponio ‘65 Boys’ Bowl Mass & Breakfast (9:00 a.m.), induction ceremony, and halftime introductions during the Boys’ Bowl Football Game (1:00 p.m.) against perennial CHSL Central Division rival De La Salle.

In 2006, the Detroit Catholic Central Administration announced and recognized the first class of The Detroit Catholic Central Athletic Hall of Fame. Its purpose was and is to establish and maintain recognition for the rich heritage and storied tradition of academic and athletic excellence of the renowned athletic program at Detroit Catholic Central High School.

Mr. Taylor has sold over 300,000 Black History Flashcards, featuring topics from general history to women, science, technology, arts, entertainment, pre-1492, and Afro-Latino/Caribbean figures.

Kevin Fischer The Executive Director of the Michigan Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), Mr. Kevin Fischer, was welcomed to Catholic Central by students and staff to speak about mental illness in the United States and share his knowledge about promoting mental wellness as a part of our Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge Program.

Mr. Fischer is the proud father of two CC alumni, Dominique Fischer ’05 and Christopher Fischer ’08. Dominique was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and was lost to suicide in 2010.

Office

One of the questions we receive most often in admissions is whether or not we have scholarships for alumni families.

No other high school in the area can point to as loyal of an alumni base, and we do not take that for granted. We are proud of that tradition, and our goal in Admissions is to ensure that every legacy family in the area is able to send their son to Catholic Central should they choose.

While we do not offer dedicated legacy scholarships, we continue to simplify the process of estimating the tuition grant that may be available to your family.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear consistently is that families do not think they are deserving of assistance unless they are full-need families. That is not the case!

This table gives a very rough estimate of our awards, and these can vary by as much as $2,000. Maximum grants are 75% of total tuition, and amounts vary depending on our available funding and the individual family situation.

We have been able to update our process to reflect more of the reality of having multiple dependents in today’s society and increased tuition, while still requiring a family to pay their share of tuition.

The other issue we often run into with families is the timing of a conversation. The longer you wait to apply, the fewer resources we have to assist.

Keeping Up with Catholic Central Athletes Basketball - State Quarterfinalist

Wrestling - State Finalist

The Varsity Basketball Team, led by Head Coach Brandon Sinawi, finished the season with a 16-9 overall record. The Shamrocks spent most of the season ranked among the top ten in the state and battled a Catholic League schedule that was arguably the strongest in years and included two victories over the eventual state champion, De La Salle. CC finished 2nd in the CHSL tournament and won the District and Regional Championships to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2009.

Their season ended with a loss to state finalist Grand Blanc.

The Varsity Wrestling Team, led by Head Coach Mitch Hancock ’00, finished the season with a 14-4 dual meet record. The Shamrocks wrestled against some of the best teams in the country and won the Dvorak Invitational and finished second at the Wadsworth Invitational. CC won the Catholic League, District, and Regional Championships and advanced to the State Finals with wins over Grandville and Hartland. In the finals, the Shamrocks fell to Davison 29-21. In the individual tournament, CC qualified 14 wrestlers for the State Finals for the sixth year in a row. At Ford Field, 12 wrestlers earned All-State honors, six advanced to the championship match, and four wrestlers won individual state titles.

Boardercross - State Finalist The Boardercross Team, led by Head Coach Andrew Fee, began its first season as a varsity sport at CC. The team consisted of 40 riders and is part of the West League which consist of six schools, Brighton, Pinckney, Howell, Hartland, Novi, and of course Catholic Central. Throughout the season, there are six regular season team races including a bye week. Catholic Central placed 1st in all of the team races landing them in first place in the league with an automatic buy-in into the State Finals. At the end of the season, there are also individual time trials. This gives every rider across the league the chance to compete at the State Finals on an individual level based on how fast they can run the course. Out of 116 riders and only 20 available spots to fill, Catholic Central filled over 50% of the riders, sending a total of 11 riders to Individual States.

At the conclusion of the State Finals, Catholic Central placed 2nd on a team level.

As for individuals, we had a podium finish with Jack Drummond ’22. Overall, a phenomenal year for the Catholic Central SBX.

Bowling The Varsity Bowling Team, led by Coach Laura Kuchinski, finished the season in early March. Catholic Central participated in numerous tournaments this season and one of the best performances was at the U of D/Mercy Tournament in February. Cole Tomaszek ’23 placed 9th out of 32 individuals with his 170, 207, 202 scores. A black patch with “AL 45” embroidered in white was proudly worn all season when Senior Captain, Preston Berezinski ’22 suggested that this season be dedicated to fellow Shamrock and Woodland Lanes’ Proprietor, Al Winkel ’45, who had recently passed.

The Varsity Hockey Team, led by Coach Brandon Kaleniecki ’00, finished the season with a 26-4 overall record and won both the Catholic League and MIHL Championships. The Shamrocks were dominant throughout a schedule that included some of the top teams in the state and Midwest. CC won the Regional Championship over Lake Orion and eventually advanced to the state finals where they met local rival, Brighton.

The Shamrocks defeated the Bulldogs 5-1 to win the Division 1 State Championship.

Skiing The Varsity Skiing Team, led by Head Coach Tom Gable, finished the season with a 4-6 dual meet record. The Shamrocks finished 5th in the CHSL and 6th in the Division.

Although this year’s team had no competing seniors, the returning junior members are excited and already preparing for 2023. Enthusiasm ignites success. The Ski Team earned Academic All-State recognition.
