Dear Alumni and Friends, As we move toward the end of this historic 2020-2021 school year, I’d like to reflect on some of the incredible achievements we have seen. First, our students were able to return to full face-to-face learning for the 4th quarter. This endeavor took an incredible amount of dedication, creativity, and determination on the part of our faculty and staff. I am grateful for their efforts. The Media Center and Learning Strategies Center project is fully funded, thanks to several very generous donors. Construction is moving forward as of May 8, and the

Staying Connected With Your Classmates THE PSYCHEDELIC ’60s 1960 - JOHN MacINNIS and his wife, Marisa, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on February 26, 2021. They celebrated the occasion with special recognition and a blessing at Mass at Our Lady of Victory on Saturday, February 27, 2021. THE GROOVY ’70s 1979 - KEVIN STEPHENS stopped by CC this past December for a visit. He made sure to stop by the band room. As a member of the band, Kevin won the prestigious John Philip Sousa Award.

Along those lines, we have had two donors step forward to help us create two new endowment opportunities to further our mission. The Shamrock Roots Scholarship, in honor of our school heritage and the families who built our foundation, is for students who reside in the city of Detroit and neighboring communities. The CC / Mercy Scholarship will help families with both a son and daughter access to single-gender education. Both scholarships will be available once funding reaches a sustainable level. Our incoming class is strong (231 of 250 spots were filled as of the end of March), and we continue to work to bring great families into the Catholic Central community. THE TECHNO ’80s 1983 - STAN HEATH is the head coach of the Lakeland Magic of the NBA G League. He led the Magic to the G League Championship in 2021 and was named the G League Coach of the Year. Shortly after the season, Stan was named the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach at his collegiate alma mater, Eastern Michigan University. THE HAPPENING ’90s 1990 - JIM BERNTHAL earned his Ph.D. in psychology (with an emphasis in industrial and organizational psychology) from Grand Canyon University this past December. His dissertation investigated the massive military aviator retention problem within the United States military. It is entitled, ”A Qualitative Descriptive Study of Job Expectations, Job Satisfaction, and Retention Among Fixed-Wing Marine Pilots.” He also holds a Master’s Degree

He weighed 7 lbs., 8 oz. and measured 20 inches. 2004 - DAN WATERSTRADT and his wife, Clare, welcomed their daughter, Heidi Noelle Waterstradt, on February 18, 2021. THE VIRTUAL ’00s cont. 2007 - NIEKO IANNI and his wife, Karen, welcomed their second child, Nathan Dario Ianni, on February 12, 2021. He weighed 7 lbs., 10 oz. and measured 21 inches. Nieko is an English teacher at Catholic Central. 2008 - KEN HERMANN and his wife, Molly, welcomed their first baby, Mark William Hermann, on December 24, 2020. He weighed 7.5 lbs. and measured 20.75 inches. He’s also a future Shamrock, Class of 2039! 2008 - C.J. POBUR was named the Division 1 Coach of the Year by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association after leading Rockford High School to a 15-6-1 overall record and a State Runner-up finish. Ironically, the Rams lost to the CC Shamrocks in the State Finals. THE CONNECTED ’10s 2012 - NOLAN GLUCHOWSKI is a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the University of Massachusetts men’s ice hockey team. The UMass Minutemen won the 2021 Division 1 NCAA Championship with a 5-0 victory over St. Cloud State. 2012 - HUNTER McDANIEL met his bride, Alison Widner, while attending the University of Notre Dame. They were married at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church on June 16, 2018. They were overjoyed to welcome their

twins, Olive and Charlie, on July 11, 2020. The twins join the family along with their oldest son, Mason, who is a proud big brother at 18 months old. Hunter and his family currently reside in Fitchburg, Wisconsin. 2015 - LIAM McCRIMMON was sworn in as a member of the Farmington Hills Police Department this past December. Liam earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at Bowling Green State University and graduated from the Wayne County Regional Police Academy. 2015 - NICO STANTE married Anna Lewis on October 24, 2020.

Cancer, You and God and Alzheimer’s – A Patient’s Journey: Two Books by Bill Paradise ’58

These days, nearly all of us know someone who has been impacted by cancer or Alzheimer’s. CC alumnus Bill Paradise ’58 has written these two books aimed at helping people in either situation. Cancer, You and God offers spiritual, mental, and emotional help to cancer patients and their loved ones. Part One of the book contains 21 brief but powerful interviewbased stories involving 15 patients, two surviving spouses, the parents of a four-year old, one oncologist, one oncology nurse, and one critical care physician. God is in every story. Part Two is made up of 51 short topics offering further help. Two examples are, “Suffering’s Two Directions” and “Bargaining With God.” Bill says four members of his extended family have died from cancer, but that wasn’t his motivation to write the book. “I really feel the Lord wanted me to write it,” he says. He definitely believes the Lord helped throughout the project. For example, of the 21 stories in Part One, he knew only seven of the people before he started writing. He says the other 14 were just “dropped in my path” along the way.

Both books are available on Amazon in paperback and Kindle versions or may be ordered at various bookstores, including Barnes and Noble. In 2010, Bill published his first book, You and God: How to Build the Most Important Relationship of Your Life. Now out of print, there are still limited copies available on Amazon. “What’s been most rewarding about this book,” Bill says, “is the opportunity to discuss it with groups of inmates at the Indiana Women’s Prison.” After CC, Bill spent seven years in the Basilians, teaching for two of those years at the Basilian school in Rochester, New York, Aquinas Institute. Shortly after leaving the Basilians, he was drafted and served with the Army in Vietnam. Bill and his wife, Bernie, live in Indianapolis and have three children and a newly-arrived fifth grandchild. They retired from their careers on the same day in 2006. Bernie spent almost her entire career in Catholic education as a teacher, principal, and administrator.

Bill actually co-authored Alzheimer’s – A Patient’s Journey with his close friend of nearly 50 years, Mike Langdon. Mike was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2017. In 2019, he told Bill he wanted to write a book about his Alzheimer’s experience but knew he couldn’t do it on his own. He asked Bill to write it with him. This very short book covers details of Mike’s journey so far, from his original negative reactions to hearing his diagnosis to his now positive approach in handling it. However, the book’s real purpose and value are in the advice Mike and

FIRST ROBOTICS NEW HOME The CC FIRST Robotics Team has a new home! After meeting for years in borrowed and shared spaces in and around the school, the team was able to move. In November, the team completed their move to an industrial warehouse about five miles from campus. The most significant aspect of their new space is that they now have a full-size practice field. As Ms. Heather Vingsness, the team coach and moderator, said, “Imagine being a swimmer whose only opportunity to swim is a circular backyard pool or a basketball player limited to a hoop in the driveway. You can practice skills, but miss the chance to practice in the game environment. Having the space to practice is a game changer.”

The benefits that Robotics students gain from their years on the team are both practical and profound, Ms. Vingsness explained: • Learning to work as a team, and to trust teammates. One person cannot build a robot. “It’s a huge exercise in faith for the student to complete his part and then pass the robot on to someone else.” • The opportunity to work on a daily basis with professional industry mentors (engineers, electricians, programmers, business owners) learning the real-world applications to classroom knowledge. “If a student is sitting in a classroom wondering when he would ever use this in real life, the answer is robotics.” • Everyone can “go pro” in robotics. There are significant college scholarships for robotics students and a high-paying professional job out there for each and every one of them. “The skills they learn in robotics are exactly the skills they need to succeed in industry.”

After a long 2020 hiatus of in-person reunion gatherings, the 2021 Florida Reunion brought sunshine, smiles, and laughter to 97 Shamrock Alumni and guests who attended this year’s gathering. Annually in March, Shamrock alumni and guests converge on sunny and beautiful Venice, Florida for a good dose of CC camaraderie - a reunion that was originally started by members of the Class of ’55 and hosted by Karen and Terry Brady ’55. The past several years, Donna and Mike Pachota ’71 have hosted this great gathering at their fantastic restaurant, Sharky’s on the Pier, on Venice Beach. Alumni Guest Speakers Dr. Brendan Byrne ’98 Speaks to Shamrocks for Veterans by John Smith ’22 Our Shamrocks for Veterans Club was honored to speak with Dr. Brendan Byrne ’98, on January 20th. A member of the wrestling team while at Catholic Central, he joined the Navy after 9/11, earning his commission in 2002. He has been deployed multiple times since then and is currently a Commander in the United States Navy Reserves. A main point of conversation was how CC prepared Dr. Byrne for his life of service; the strong bond of brotherhood at CC is similar to that of the Navy. Additionally, the themes of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge are natural foundations for service of any sort. A takeaway I had from our conversation was that there are many types of service and many paths to each. Said Dr. Byrne, “...whether one keeps us free, tends to the souls

As we continue to move forward in 2021, it is with great joy and anticipation that we will honor and recognize the 2020 and 2021 Detroit Catholic Central Athletic Hall of Fame Classes as part of the annual Boys’ Bowl Mass and Breakfast. On Sunday, September 26, 2021, the Detroit Catholic Central Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place just prior to the conclusion of the annual Boys’ Bowl Mass at CC. All past Athletic Hall of Fame honorees are encouraged to attend. Mass will begin at 9:00 a.m. The Athletic Hall of Fame Classes of 2020 and 2021 will also be recognized at halftime of the annual Boys’ Bowl Football Game vs. Brother Rice. Game time is 1:00 p.m. In 2006, the Detroit Catholic Central Administration announced and recognized the first class of The Detroit Catholic Central Athletic Hall of Fame. Its purpose was and is to establish and maintain recognition for the rich heritage and storied tradition of academic and athletic excellence of the renowned athletic program at Detroit Catholic Central High School. The Detroit Catholic Central Athletic Hall of Fame acknowledges the contributions and accomplishments of the individuals and teams which have earned recognition and have provided excellent examples of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. 16

Using our smart board technology and Google Meet, we were able to interact and ask questions with Mr. Camiller as he gave his presentation. Students would also send him questions prior to his presentation using Google Forms. Mr. Camiller gave a walkthrough of what his job as an accountant at Plante Moran was like. This was very beneficial to students interested in accounting and business backgrounds. It allowed us to have an inside source in this career path and if we wanted it for ourselves. We thank Mr. Camiller for spending his time to talk with us on the work and life of an accountant.

The ONE MILLION dollar upgrade to the school’s Learning Strategies Center and Media Center has now begun. This upgrade will provide students with increased space for collaborative learning and will continue an overall effort to provide state-of-the-art facilities for the School’s more than 900 students.

The Media Center, under the leadership of Mrs. Kelly Kolchuk, has evolved from a traditional library to a collaborative learning space over the past few years. The adjacent Learning Strategies Center (LSC) was launched in 2012 with the support of CC parents, Mike and Kelli Ferrantino, and is under the guidance of Mrs. Marylou Swindall and Mrs. Maureen Gatt. This center empowers students to improve in areas of organization, time management, test-taking strategies, and note taking. In addition to working with students on these crucial skills, the LSC has also begun to provide some accommodations for students with individual learning plans.

One of the key components of academic life at Catholic Central is additional support outside the classroom, whether through official or unofficial methods. The Shamrock Study Hall program, for example, began as a way to provide support to students who were identified as being “at risk” academically. It has evolved into an option for any students interested in extra help in a specific subject, at no cost to the family. The renovated Media Center will allow this program, and others like it, to grow.

The Media Center renovation and the LSC expansion is the second major initiative in the last year, following the improved school entrance on Wixom Road that was completed in the fall of 2020. A point of pride for the school is that both projects have been funded through private donations rather than tuition money.

The DRIVE Results To say this year’s DRIVE was a huge success would be an understatement. The Student Ticket DRIVE is an annual event that is synonymous with school spirit at Catholic Central. Each year, students sell raffle tickets and collect money for tuition assistance. The seven school days that make up “DRIVE week” are comprised of half days and assemblies that promote school spirit and competition among the students, faculty, and staff. However, due to COVID-19, we were unable to host traditional assemblies. Nonetheless, our students overcame and produced virtual assemblies and entertainment. The school didn’t miss a beat! The theme for this year was “Saturday Morning TV.” Each grade level represented a TV network, and the homerooms represented shows on those networks. The seniors were

American Legion Oratorical Contest

Veterans’ Memorial Flag Pole

Jack Smith ’21 was named the winner of the Michigan American Legion Oratorical Contest in Lansing on March 6, 2021, earning a prize of $8,000.

The Veteran’s Memorial Flag Pole that was installed by John Smith ’22 on September 7, 2020, and featured in the Winter 2021 issue of the Aluminator, was installed in honor of the late Commander Michael P. Zalewski ’65.

Jack delivered a ten-minute speech entitled, “Popular Sovereignty: The People’s Government.” He considered the historical roots of protests and voting as an expression of the will of the American people. Additionally, he prepared four five-minute speeches about the three branches of government and the Constitution. Students from across the state competed at local, zone, and state levels in the contest. Jack’s final presentation placed him against students from Greenhills, Grosse Pointe, and Big Rapids. The American Legion Oratorical Contest has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights, and privileges of American citizenship since 1938.

Jonah Hurley ’22 Named Business Student of the Year Jonah Hurley ’22 has been selected as the winner of Northwood University’s Junior Business Student of the Year scholarship. This honor comes with a $2,000 per year renewable scholarship to Northwood University along with automatic acceptance and a full scholarship to attend the University’s summer LAB Camp. Jonah is a junior who currently serves on the Executive Board for CC’s highly competitive and successful DECA program. Jonah is also a two-time DECA State Champion.

Shamrocks Find Continued Success with Value Investing during Turbulent Times

The Detroit Catholic Central Finance Club’s goal is to provide students with the skills to ensure their future financial health. It was founded in the first semester of the 2015-16 school year. The Finance Club promotes the active management of a community-sponsored investment fund in which students are able to practice long-term investment strategies toward the advancement of the school’s tuition assistance fund. Headed by Co-Moderators Mr. Anthony Cornish (Latin teacher) and Mr. Kevin Griffin ’96 (English teacher), the club’s portfolio has grown to over $153,000. The club currently boasts over 150 student members and has hosted over 25 guest speakers. Members of the student-run Board of Directors hold bi-weekly meetings to discuss the basics of money management, financial analysis, and investment strategy. Though this year’s DCC Finance Club Golf Outing Fundraiser has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the club looks forward to an outing again in May 2022. Alex Perez ’21, University of Pennsylvania ’25 I am the current Finance Club president. I plan to attend The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania, where I will earn a B.S. in Economics with concentrations in Finance and either Statistics or Management. I may also pursue a dual degree. In my career at CC, I quickly realized that I wanted to pursue Business and Finance, specifically Financial Entrepreneurship. Being a part of our Finance Club has given me valuable information and experience at an extremely young age. I already know what it feels like to lead a team in the management of relatively large amounts of money, and I am already familiar with pitching stock ideas to a group of my peers and mentors. As President, I have worked closely with our board members, and I have gained valuable experience in managing a team of individuals with different skill sets. Everything I have done in our Finance Club will prove useful not only at the university level, but also in my planned career in Finance and Entrepreneurship. I couldn’t be more thankful to Mr. Cornish, Mr. Griffin, and all of the club’s members, who have had such a positive impact on my life. 36

Jacob Seabolt ’20, University of Michigan ’24 I am currently a freshman at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. I plan to concentrate my studies in Finance, and I am currently planning to join a consulting club here in Ann Arbor. Being the Finance Club President has brought me many advantages, the most important of which is improved public speaking. Leading bi-weekly discussions with a group of my peers gave me a lot of confidence to actively participate in similar discussions at college. This type of experience has led me down the consulting path, which will involve research, presentations, and discussions similar to our CC Finance Club meetings. Hayden Kibbey ’19, University of Michigan ’23 The CC Finance Club was the single most impactful high school extracurricular experience for the

development of my professional life. I first met Daniel Seder, Managing Partner at Blue Chip Partners and close friend of Mr. Griffin, during my time as Finance Club President. Staying in touch with Mr. Seder afforded me a fantastic internship opportunity during the summer after my freshman year. From that internship, I was asked to stay on at Blue Chip during the academic year. I am confident that the knowledge base that I began to build as a high school student has given me a leg up over my business school peers. Learning to network with speakers and friends of the club also provided me with many tangential benefits, such as becoming comfortable in reaching out to potential mentors and future employers. I consider the CC Finance Club to be my entrée before the main course of Finance, the field that I am now studying. I am currently looking for sophomore and junior summer internships in Investment Banking. While stock picking and investment management are not directly correlated with IB, the analytical mindset that the club fostered in me will serve me well. I am now involved in two Ross School of Business finance clubs, a trading club and a stock pitch club.

Unlike the other Presidents of the Finance Club, I have taken a somewhat different path since graduating from CC. Instead of seeking a degree in Business, I find myself pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering with a concentration in Biochemical Engineering. I juxtapose my STEM courses with various Humanities courses as I pursue a minor in Bioethics. I call the lab at MSU’s IQ Institute my home away from home. As a member of a team of researchers exploring the potential of extracellular vesicles for non-viral gene therapeutics, I am currently investigating the application of bacterial lysates to generate vectors for gene therapies. As the President of MSU’s Academic Competition Club, I compete in Quiz Bowl Tournaments, lead the club’s bi-weekly practices, and host tournaments for college and high school teams in the region. As the President of the MSU Chapter of “Engineers Without Borders,” I lead a group of engineers as we collaborate with Ardhi University to implement a rainwater catchment system in a suburban school and a well for a rural community in Tanzania. Last year, I was a member of MSU’s iGEM team, learning about various bioinformatics workflows that can be applied to develop a probiotic for bees. Inspired by that experience, I have also taken up the challenge to create a program that will expand opportunities for students to contribute to synthetic biology research projects that have the potential to solve the world’s most pressing problems. Though I was a member of the Academic Team and the Band (playing both the alto saxophone and piano), my experience in the Finance Club has, by far, had the most significant impact. From the analytical skills

I developed in my Sophomore year (producing stock proposals) to the organizational and leadership skills I honed as Treasurer and President, the critical decisions I make today are often guided by my experience in the Club. Mike Collins ’17, Indiana University ’21 I am currently finishing my last semester at The Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. Over the last two years, I have interned for a commercial real estate company based in Detroit, working primarily with the commercial brokerage and finance divisions of the company. Now, however, I am looking to start a career in Finance. Although I have not secured a full-time job offer, I am currently interviewing with several wealth management firms, as well as companies that specialize in venture capital. Additionally, I hope to attend law school after a few years of work experience. It feels like only yesterday that Steve Lanasky and I started the Finance Club with the help of Mr. Cornish and Mr. Griffin. Looking back, I truly appreciate how much the whole experience has shaped my academic and professional life. Prior to attending high school, I really didn’t know what my future would hold. At CC, I became interested in the stock market and Economics. With the support of so many students, faculty, and alumni, we were able to start the Finance Club as an outlet for students to explore their interest in Finance at a level that went far beyond the classroom. As President of the Finance Club, I was blessed with the opportunity to both expand my understanding of Finance, as well as to introduce the subject to any student who wanted to learn. I am very grateful for the experience that the CC Finance Club provided, and I am especially proud that the Finance Club is leaving a lasting legacy for generations of Shamrocks to come!

Steven Lanasky ’16, University of Notre Dame ’20 I recently graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A. in Economics and Great Books, and in January 2021 I started my role as a Business Analyst for Deloitte Consulting’s Legacy Strategy & Operations practice in Chicago. Whether it was my conversion to Catholicism as a sophomore at CC or my learned interest in literature from the fantastic English department, CC pushed me in the direction to become who I am today. CC awakened interests that would define my future. Oddly enough, starting the Finance Club with the executive board and faculty moderators gave me the confidence to take a different path: to chase my interests. While it felt like a capstone for my time at CC, it was more a true beginning of a different vision for my future career. I could start my career as a young professional with the aim of pursuing the common good while also following my passions and becoming more of an authentic self. I am overwhelmingly thankful for the effort that so many individuals at CC poured into my development, a development that now inspires me to find my own vocation to help others. The Finance Club is a fantastic starting point for any young man looking to do the same.

VEX Robotics 2020-2021 Season

2030A Cade Brigmon ’21, Ryan Paulin ’23, Luke Schafer ’21, Jacob Yee ’21 (Captain) 2030B The Catholic Central VEX Robotics Team wrapped up another season of STEM-based learning and competition. The program fielded three teams this year. The teams began working together in early September, averaging six hours per week. The VEX season was put on hold in November due to COVID-19 concerns. Thankfully, the state greenlighted school academic team practices in late December. The CC VEX teams resumed after Christmas break. The restart allowed the teams to compete in two more tournaments.

The first tournament in late October was held outdoors with a temperature of 40 degrees. The teams had to adjust their robots over the course of the day to function in the cold weather. The 2030C team, with all rookie members led by Mathew Cronin ’21, won the Judges Award. The teams travelled to Grandville for their final tournament in March. They faced stiff competition, as the teams on the west side of the state had ten tournaments under their belts. Team 2030B won the Create Award for several unique and effective innovations using the standard VEX components. Team 2030A also built a solid and innovative robot, but the delay in the VEX program hindered their progress. Two 2030A players were committed to other CC winter programs, making it difficult to spend the time necessary to finish the final iterations of their robot (usually done in late fall). During the last tournament, 2030A discovered a difficult-to-detect faulty drive shaft/motor connection. They worked quickly to fix the glitch and performed well in subsequent matches. The VEX Teams are coached by Amy Schafer and John Linenberg ’89.
