A Message from the
President
Hello Catholic Central Community, “In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.” - Albert Einstein Fear, anxiety, isolation, hardship… these negative words, and more, can be used to describe our current world. We are in the middle of difficulty, of that there is no doubt. However, there is also opportunity, and our administration, faculty, staff, and students are taking advantage of the chance to make the most of it. We have been challenged to adapt to a new world and have done so at the highest level. We have had to re-examine what a Catholic Central education means and to adapt that core and standard of excellence to new delivery models that allow us to continue to serve our constituents. Our teachers have met the challenge by developing an online curriculum, and our students are meeting the teachers’ call to action. This process will not only get us through this immediate period, but also provide us with online tools into the future. There remain many challenges for all of us in the days ahead, and as James 2:24 tells us, it is both faith and action that will see us through. Birth rates and demographics will continue to challenge our enrollment. Economic uncertainty will give pause to families considering taking on the cost of Catholic Central tuition. Additionally, all of us who have recently tried to educate our own children at home have seen first-hand how important it is to offer our incredible teachers respectful pay for their service. Be it mandated distance learning, a dip in enrollment, an uncertain economy, or tuition and salary needs, we know that we are capable of meeting the challenges before us. We also know that wherever we find ourselves in this world, we are stronger, as James states, when we pray and act together. Now, more than ever, a strong endowment can secure the future of our school community. Growing our endowment allows us to weather these storms and others that may arise unexpectedly. A strong endowment allows us to offer more tuition assistance to deserving young men and to pay our incredible and dedicated faculty and staff a fair wage. If you have not done so already, we hope you will consider supporting our efforts towards the endowment as we close out our school year. If you have already supported us, we thank you once again. Staying Connected With Your Classmates THE SWELL ’40s 1942 - STAN WILKINS remains active and in good spirits. A proud US Navy Veteran, Stan served his country on a minesweeping ship during WWII. Today, he enjoys ushering during Sunday Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows, as well as social time with family and friends. Stan is a frequent attendee at CC events, as well as the Farmington Elks Club. Stan was also an excellent baseball player, contributing to the success of many of Fr. Martin’s great CC Baseball Teams. Stan joined Rudy Seichter ’59 and Tim Burke ’86 for lunch on March 11th.

Jim was able to present solid evidence that absolved his brother from the various speculations that surrounded the case and how one of the major suspects in the crime was able to lead law enforcement on a merry chase down the wrong road for several years. THE PSYCHEDELIC ’60s 1960 - JAMES PAUL SANDERSON retired as a federal agent with the United States Treasury Department in 1999 after 26 years experience in investigating the highest levels of criminal offenses against the government. His transition into other endeavours included writing. He has authored the books, A Spoonful of Sugar (2001), Down the Rathole (2018), and has had numerous articles printed. His book, Down the Rathole, examines the case and “gangland style” murders of three men. It was also personal. The triple homicide involved the death of Jim’s brother, Fredrick Sanderson ’70. After almost 35 years, Jim was able to gain access to the records of law enforcement officials, spending many hours going through available evidence in the triple homicide case. His efforts produced a solution to the
1986 - MARK KASSA is a member of the Recording Academy and is a Grammy Awards voter. Mark and his band, Slight Return, had two songs, “Vicious Tides” and “Warrior’s Soul,” released by Mi5/Universal Music Group in 2019. Both songs peaked at Mark Kassa ’86 and his wife, Marilyn, at #13 on the DRT Global the 2020 Grammy Awards Rock Charts and combined for nine consecutive months on the charts. 1995 - CHRIS WEGIENKA is a very humble and proud member of the Bloomfield Township Police Department where he was named the 2019 Officer of the Year. Chris was also a member of the 1994 State Championship Hockey Team which was inducted into the CC Athletic Hall of Fame last fall.
1998 - IAN DEVLIN and his wife, Krystal, welcomed their son, Keenan Jackson, on October 3, 2019. The three currently live in Las Vegas, Nevada.
1998 - KEVIN NOWAK was appointed as the Executive Director of CHN Housing Partners, a Cleveland, Ohio-based non-profit organization whose mission is to leverage the power of affordable, stable housing to change lives and improve communities. CHN’s main offices are in Northeast Ohio, and they opened an office in Detroit in 2018 to focus on home ownership and affordable housing development. Additionally, Kevin was named among the “40 under 40” in Crain’s Cleveland. THE VIRTUAL ’00s 2000 - BRANDON KALENIECKI and his wife, Ellen, welcomed twins, Lillian Grace and Samuel Gordon, on February 3, 2020. Brandon is a teacher and the Head Hockey Coach at CC.

2002 - DR. ADAM RALKO was named one of 2019’s Best Doctors in America. Each year, Best Doctors, Inc. compiles this list of physicians as selected by their peers, and St. Louis Magazine publishes the names of the doctors on this list who practice locally in the St. Louis area where Adam currently resides with his wife, Charis, and their two-year-old son, Nolan. Adam has been in practice as an internal medicine physician with Mercy Clinic since 2013.
HERBERT BROTHERS COME HOME TO CC On Wednesday, February 5th Ray ’48 and Dick Herbert ’53 came home to Catholic Central. The Herbert boys, including their brother, Don ’47 who passed away in 2016, represent the legacy, tradition, and excellence of our studentathletes. Hard workers in the classroom and on the playing fields, they credit CC for a foundation in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge as well as a competitive spirit. All three Herbert Boys spent time at our Belmont Campus, with Dick making the transition to our 6565 West Outer Drive Campus. Both Don and Ray had professional baseball careers within the Detroit Tigers organization, with Ray playing 14 years of Major League Baseball, including winning 20 games with the Chicago White Sox and being the winning pitcher of the second All-Star Game in 1962.

2004 - JOE SCHIAVI accepted a position of Vice President of Ticket Sales and Service for the Detroit Tigers. He and his wife, Rachel, moved from Miami to Saint Clair Shores in November 2019. Joe previously worked for the Houston Astros, Detroit Pistons, and Miami Marlins. 2005 - VICTOR ANSARA JR. and his wife, Chelsea, welcomed their second child, Annabel Una, on February 1, 2019. Victor is currently a 3rd generation restaurateur, a member of the Ansara Concepts, Inc. executive team, and owner of Burgrz and Twin Peaks of Michigan. 2005 - MICHAEL OAKLEAF and his wife, Sarah, welcomed their first child, Lincoln James, on March 2, 2020. THE VIRTUAL ’00s continued 2008 - PATRICK CARROLL continues to live and share his Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge through his work within the Archdiocese of Detroit and with the PIME Missionaries. Patrick was featured in the AOD’s December 2019-January 2020 issue of Unleash The Gospel. 2008 - JACOB CHRISTENSON and his wife, Kim, welcomed their first child, Charlotte Mae, on May 20, 2019. Charlotte weighed in at 7 lbs., 14 oz., and measured 21-½” long. Jacob is currently an account manager at Sonwil Logistics.

During his third year at Align, Jacques achieved multiple accolades including President’s Club which qualifies only the top 7% of all performers, finishing #3 of 336 in Invisalign’s North American sales force. 2013 - EVAN MORAN and his wife, Laura Oakley, were married at Blue Bridge Event Center in Traverse City on September 7, 2019. They reside in Madison Heights. Evan is a Senior Software Engineer with Quicken Loans.
2008 - NICHOLAS KRISTOCK was the 2020 recipient of the Oakland University Athletic Hall of Honor Community Service Award. Nicholas is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of Fleece & Thank You. 2009 - COLIN BONATHAN and his wife, Julie, celebrated the arrival of their first child, daughter Abrielle Marie, on January 20, 2020. Abrielle weighed in at 6 lbs., 15 oz. and measured 19.7 inches.

Bryan Gruley ’75 - CC Author Hosts Local Book Signing Award-winning author and CC alumnus, Bryan Gruley ’75, hosted a book signing in Northville on January 17, 2020, to promote his new mystery novel, Purgatory Bay. Bryan is the award-winning, critically acclaimed author of the forthcoming Purgatory Bay, which Michael Connelly says is, “impossible to put down.” Purgatory Bay is set in the same fictional Michigan town as Gruley’s previous novel, Bleak Harbor, which Gillian Flynn called, “an electric bolt of suspense.” Purgatory Bay was released on January 14, 2020, and is available for purchase at www.bryangruley.com. Bryan also wrote the Starvation Lake trilogy: Starvation Lake, The Hanging Tree, and The Skeleton Box. Bryan’s debut, Starvation Lake, was an Edgar Finalist and won Anthony, Barry, and Strand awards. The Hanging Tree was a #1 Indie Next pick, a Michigan Notable Book, and a Kirkus Best Mystery of 2010. Reviewers have compared him favorably to novelists Dennis Lehane and Richard Russo. When he’s not making things up, Bryan has written longform features on a wide variety of topics as a staff writer for Bloomberg Businessweek magazine. A lifelong journalist,

he shared in The Wall Street Journal’s Pulitzer Prize for coverage of the September 11th terrorist attacks and has won numerous other awards for his writing and reporting. Recently moving from Chicago, Bryan lives in Florida with his wife, Pam, and enjoys playing ice hockey and guitar. SPOTLIGHT Alumnus Returns to Teach at Catholic Central
CC Alumni Spotlight: Nick Fugedi ’03 by Janice Sharkey When Nick Fugedi ’03 was a senior in Mrs. Amy Nanni’s sociology class, the students were given an assignment to write a timeline of how they wanted their lives to play out. Fast forward to 2012, just after he was about to start his job at CC, Nick’s mom (who saved everything) pulled out that assignment from her archives and showed Nick what he had written: “After college and travelling, I want to come home and teach art at Catholic Central.” And here he is. After graduating from Western Michigan with a degree in Art Education, spending time in Hawaii, developing his amazing musical skills and talents, and then teaching in other schools, Mr. Fugedi is home.
In addition to his classes at CC, Nick and his wife, Alex, operate “Honey Art Studios” in Ferndale and Allen Park, in addition to “Little Humans Art Co.,” a mobile art and music studio. He also creates custom illustrations of people’s homes and special events. A real joy for Nick is entertaining; he plays at many community events, theaters, and nightclubs. One of his

I’m sure many of us have been in contact with high school friends, teammates, or teachers to check in, see how they are doing, and feel a personal connection that is missing while we are forced to stay in our homes for so long. The CC Alumni Association provides a wide range of activities that help build and sustain these strong connections for the CC community. These include the Boys’ Bowl Mass & Breakfast, Alumni Basketball League, Alumni Dinner, Ash Wednesday Mass & Lenten Meal, as well as many others. These great events necessarily include large groups of the CC family gathering to pray, eat, celebrate, eat, create camaraderie, and hopefully eat a bit more. While I have enjoyed all of these events multiple times over the years, I have never realized how meaningful they are to me before now. I cannot wait to be able to gather with friends and fellow alumni again soon to share the smiles, laughs, and hugs that occur so naturally at all

Campus Crusade Reunions The CC Campus Crusade Reunions continued in 2020 with visits to the University of Notre Dame (January 25), the University of Michigan (February 12), Hillsdale College (February 13), and Grand Valley State University (February 20). Class of ’656565 Christmas Party The Class of 1965, affectionately known as the Class of ’656565, celebrated their annual Christmas party on Thursday, December 5th, at Buddy’s Pizza. There, they had the opportunity to introduce the recipient of the Class of ’65 Scholarship, Parker Kara ’23.
Shamrock Bar Association On February 11, 2020, the Shamrock Bar Association held its winter meeting at CC with 50 members in attendance, representing classes from 1954 to the present. Judge Robert Colombo ’68 spoke passionately about why he believes in God, and Carl Schoeniger ’63 gave a moving presentation of the story of Jim Finn ’43, a man of outstanding courage and integrity who was given the Judge Richard Hathaway ’68 Award (posthumously). School President Ed Turek ’85 gave a State of the School address, and Dave Brauer ’84 discussed the Shamrock Bar and its plans for the future. Please mark your calendars for September 27, 2020. The Shamrock Bar Association is hosting a Sunday Mass & Brunch for all members and their families at CC. Tony & L i nd a Mag n i Schola rsh ip Fund “I f you are on t ime, you’re late” - C oach Magni At the annual Cross Country Banquet in November, the 2019 Catholic Central Cross Country team announced the start of The Tony & Linda Magni Scholarship Fund. As part of the team gift for Coach and Linda, the young runners presented them with a $3,000 check to start this fund. The timing was definitely fitting to start this scholarship fund as Tony had just added yet another major accomplishment to his long list of accolades at Catholic Central…his 18th Regional Cross Country Championship! Tony’s list of accomplishments is unlike any other coach in the State. His resume boasts six Division 1 Cross Country State Championships, 27 Catholic League Championships, and 18 Regional Championships…just to name a few. Tony Magni, “Coach”, as he is affectionately called, walked on the scene at Detroit Catholic Central (6565 West Outer Drive) in 1973 and has impacted many runners’ lives over these past 46 years. He has been a mentor and father figure for so many young men that have crossed his path. Linda has been just as dedicated to these young men along the way. University’s “Extraordinary Concepts in Physics” course, which started on January 15th. I am currently halfway through, and I have learned so much! I am excited to teach “Young’s Double Slit Experiment” (an important piece of evidence that light is both a wave and a particle, and not just a wave)... I’ve taught the concept in the past, but with the information gained from this course, I can really explain the idea - and do a lab! - in a more thorough way. I have already updated my electricity lessons to include new information. Soon, I will begin creating new lessons for a unit on “Modern Physics.” Taking this course has really increased my confidence in these science topics, and the benefits of this class will pop up in the lessons I teach for the rest of my life. CC LEGENDS LIVE ON Fr. Raymond Paramo, C.S.B. Fr. Leo Klosterman, C.S.B. In January the Detroit Catholic Central High School community lost a legend with the passing of our blessed Fr. Raymond Paramo, C.S.B. In his half century of dedication and devotion to CC, Fr. Paramo touched

THE CC FOUNDATION It has become customary for many publications to recognize the “best of the best” in a particular field. Each year, several publications such as The Wall Street Journal and Crain’s Detroit Business publish lists that highlight the top doctors, lawyers, chefs, influencers, innovators, etc. Similarly, Catholic Central fully acknowledges that many alumni have distinguished themselves academically, professionally, and personally, while building upon the foundation of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge laid during their time at CC.

BRENDAN BYRNE ’98
Currently wrestling for the University of Michigan, Myles is a three-time NCAA wrestling All-American. Myles has qualified to represent the country of San Marino in the 2020 Olympics. “Catholic Central taught me to strive for excellence in everything I do because during my time here, it was the only standard that was acceptable.” Favorite memory: Evan Toth ’14 winning us a team state title in 2013 with a “headlock heard ’round the world.”
After graduation from U of M, and just after 9/11, Brendan joined the Navy, and they sent him to Wayne State University for medical school. He did his internship at the Naval Medical Center, went to dive school, and served as an Undersea Medical Officer. Brendan completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Detroit Medical Center. He then served his second deployment and served on five continents. Brendan then joined the faculty at University of Michigan where he is the Director of Wilderness Medicine and Tactical Emergency Medical Services. He also serves as the Deputy Force Surgeon, US Marine Forces Central Command. Brendan will soon leave for his fourth deployment. “One tends to underestimate what one can accomplish with hard work, which is inevitably a product of Discipline. Goodness informs one’s integrity and infuses our action with peace and Grace, and shows through.” Favorite memory: In my senior year, Fr. Menner, C.S.B. learned that I was behind on my tuition, even though I was working after school and weekends. I asked him for more time, and he told me not to worry about it. I never saw that bill. Had Fr. Menner not helped, I doubt I’d be an alum. To this day, I’m working to “make it” so I can give back to another generation. Thank you, Father!
JASON ANDERSON ’98 After graduating from the University of Michigan, Jason moved to Aspen, Colorado, to fulfill his dream of living and skiing in the mountains. Jason is now the owner of Anderson Property Management in Aspen. “Catholic Central’s motto, ‘Teach me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge,’ along with the academic workload and expectations for success, provided me with an advantage in college and the workplace. I believe CC instills values in its students which they will carry with them throughout their lives.” Favorite memory: Competing with the varsity alpine ski team. DAVID BUSHART ’07 Since completing his Ph.D. in Molecular and Integrative Physiology at the University of Michigan in 2018, David has been researching new therapies to treat spinocerebellar ataxia. He currently works at U of M as a Research Fellow in the Department of Neurology and as a part-time Neurology Trials Coordinator. David’s research has helped identify two FDA-approved drugs that are awaiting clinical trials. He is the recipient of the Davenport Research Award and has been recognized by the National Ataxia Foundation’s Young Investigator Initiative. “I was able to save time and money in college by placing out of many introductory courses in Math, Science, and French due to the strong programs at Catholic Central. CC’s mission of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge has helped guide my academic training and professional career.” Favorite memory: I was fortunate to participate in the French exchange program three times, twice as a host, and once as an exchange student. Fr. John Wheeler, C.S.B. ’57 made this incredible experience possible, along with fun times in French class and at French Club.
JUSTIN CESSANTE ’99 While at CC, Justin was a two-year captain of back-to-back state championship football teams. He then went on to Grand Valley State where he played on the 2002 National Championship team. While in college, Justin and childhood friends started a non-profit that provided programs for youth in Metro Detroit in social awareness, education, and athletics. After college, Justin worked at American Franchise Systems, then transitioned to the non-profit sector, eventually building a grantfunded community center in Dearborn Heights. Justin is now National Director of Football and Director of Strategic Partnerships at the Legacy Sports Complex, in addition to being the Executive Director of the LEAD Foundation. Justin has also been coaching football at Catholic Central for 15 years. His community initiatives include the Turkey Giveaway, Volunteers of America Holidays of Hope, Cleats4Kids, and mentoring in after school programs. “My time at Detroit Catholic Central helped prepare me by instilling Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. This was instilled in me by great mentors and coaches, such as Tom Mach, Tim Henry ’72, Roy Dudas, Rick Coratti ’69, Tony Magni, Gene Grewe, Fr. Donoher, C.S.B., Fr. Menner, C.S.B., Fr. Ward, C.S.B. ’59, Dave Lewis ’79, George Kunec ’64, and Janice Sharkey. When I came to CC, I had to adapt to a new culture, and that made me work to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Hard work, team work, and extra work was ingrained into our mindset and into our habits. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University, Eric worked for a regional airline, and in 2009, was chosen for the Undergraduate Pilot Training by the Ohio Air National Guard, finishing first in his class after attaining the highest awards. In 2013, Eric transferred to the Arizona Air National Guard, still flying the KC-135R. He began flying for Delta in 2016, and has since flown as first officer on the Boeing 757, 767, and captain on the MD-88. “Catholic Central teachers’ enthusiasm for their work showed me how important it is to do something you are extremely passionate about, and you will never work a day in your life.” Favorite memory: DRIVE continued to be my favorite time each year, not just because of the days off, but watching everyone come together for a single purpose was an amazing experience to be part of each year. SEAN COWLEY ’00 After graduating from Purdue University and the U of D Mercy Law School, Sean clerked for Hon. Sean Cox ’75 for two years. He was then hired into the U.S. Dept. of Justice through the Attorney General’s Honors Program where he policed fraud and abuse in the bankruptcy system. In 2013, Sean was named lead counsel for the City of Detroit bankruptcy case. Sean served a similar role for Puerto Rico in their restructuring. In 2015, Sean served for six months in Washington, D.C., preparing directors in the department for Congressional testimony, recommending litigation strategies and settlement negotiations against some of the nation’s largest financial institutions. He currently sits on the National Working Group for Civil Enforcement issues. Aside from the Justice Department, Sean is an adjunct professor at the U of D Mercy School of Law and is active in the State and Federal Bar Associations. “Catholic Central taught me to work hard and always be the best-prepared person at whatever I was doing in my life. If you work hard and help others along the way, good things will happen.” Favorite memory: Live wrestling drills in the practice room with individual state champion and classmate, Mitch Hancock ’00. I think I took him down once in two years wrestling against him. Even back then, you could tell he was destined for great things, and his success leading CC’s team in recent years is a matter of pride, but no real surprise for those of us who knew him back then.

After graduating from CC, Paul toured Europe for a year with the show, “Riverdance,” then went on to graduate from the University of Notre Dame and Wayne State Law School. Paul then became an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, and then an Assistant Attorney General in the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, prosecuting a wide variety of cases. In 2016, Gov. Rick Snyder appointed him Judge for the Third Circuit Court in Wayne County. Paul has been named Litigator of the Year, Irish American Lawyer of the Year, and received the State Police’s “Professional Excellence Award.” “‘Teach me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge’ are not just words, but a way of life for CC students. As both an attorney and a judge, I find it essential to be good to individuals whom I encounter. Catholic Central taught me that success is based on one’s character, not on title or wealth. CC also taught me the discipline to do well in college, law school, and the legal profession. The long hours of dedication to my work first began from the math, history, and science classes where my CC teachers demanded the best from me. CC also gave me the foundational knowledge I needed to understand this complex world. Learning alongside the most talented students, and from the most talented teachers, was beneficial beyond words. Thank you, CC, for everything!” Favorite memory: Riding the bus to Boys’ Bowl with Fr. Donoher, C.S.B. in my Freshman year and singing all the fight songs and yelling all the cheers there and back. That is when I first found out what CC is about: Family NICHOLAS DIBELLA ’99 After graduating from Pepperdine University, Nick held various operations and corporate finance positions in the real estate sector in California, North Carolina, and Colorado. He is now back in metro Detroit and is Senior Vice President at Sun Communities, overseeing their outdoor hospitality division, which consists of more than 140 RV resorts and campgrounds across the US and Canada. “I’ve always lived my personal and professional life with the CC motto, ‘Teach me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge’ at the top of my mind. Work hard and be a good person. The Discipline it took to succeed in academics and athletics at CC, going against and playing with the best, provided the foundation that has carried me through the next stages of life.” Favorite memory: Winning three state championships: two football and one baseball.
JOHN DIGIOVANNI ’01 John is a Principal in the healthcare investment team at Arsenal Capital Partners in New York City and serves as a Board Director on multiple portfolio companies. Prior to these positions, John worked at Bank of America, Merrill Lynch, and spent ten years in Chicago and London for Baird Capital. He currently serves on the board of Gilda’s Club, a non-profit offering free programs for those impacted by cancer. John holds graduate degrees from Harvard University and Northwestern University, and a BA from Michigan State University. “My time at CC was incredibly formative. The CC community and Basilian Fathers were extremely influential in fostering my deeply rooted faith and interest in social policy. I learned a great deal about integrity and Discipline under Coach Magni as a member of CC’s cross country and track & field teams. The work ethic and fortitude instilled by Coach Magni have served me well throughout my professional career. I also developed friendships at CC that have stood the test of time.” Favorite memory: Competing alongside my cross country teammates.

Brian also serves as a course instructor in both the graduate and undergraduate programs. “Looking back on my time at CC, several different experiences informed my career journey. The community service and civic engagement experiences helped prepare me for a career in the nonprofit sector. In the classroom, Mr. Petrovich’s English course was really powerful in shaping my ability to communicate and tell stories effectively. From an athletics standpoint, the lessons that Coach Gable taught me on the ski hill instilled an important framework for how to go about developing skills and confidence through thoughtful feedback and practice. I am grateful for the experiences and exposure that CC, Mr. Petrovich, and Coach Gable provided. They helped propel me to explore a career pathway that challenges me every day to be my best.” Favorite memory: When I reflect on my time at CC, a couple of things stand out. First, the friendships I made are front and center. Second, the culture of excellence that surrounded us as students was remarkable. We were expected to push ourselves, take on challenges, and set goals for ourselves that set us up for success in college and beyond. RICK HALE ’07
MATT FLYNN ’05 After graduating from Michigan State University, where he was a member of the 2007 Men’s Club Ice Hockey Championship team, Matt went to the Western Michigan Cooley Law School. He is licensed in Michigan and in the District of Columbia. Matt currently serves as Deputy Assistant to the President and Acting White House Cabinet Secretary and as a JAG Officer in the North Carolina Army National Guard. In his role at the White House, Matt manages the Office of Cabinet Affairs, which coordinates communications, policy, and logistics between the White House and the President’s Cabinet. Prior to this, Matt was a senior advisor at the State Department and legislative counsel to U.S. Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC). In his military capacity, Matt is currently assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division and was recently deployed to the Middle East in support of the Special Operations Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve. He has also completed a Masters in Strategic Studies at the U.S. Army War College. Favorite memory: 2003 Hockey State Championship and the camaraderie, friendship, and brotherhood that has kept so many of us so close for all this time. It’s always a great day to wear blue and white! BRIAN GOEBEL ’98 After graduating from the University of Michigan, Brian went on to receive an MBA from Emory University. He worked in the private and nonprofit sectors before returning to Emory. He now serves as the Managing Director for Social Enterprise at Emory University’s Goizueta School of Business, a research center that combines academic research with fieldwork programs and student activities to create better markets, support stronger communities,
Rick started playing classical music on the piano at age four, but when he arrived at CC, he started playing percussion. From his first audition until the day he graduated, his main focus was the band. As his leadership role in the band increased, he learned from Mr. Greg Normandin ’78 that being a leader is not so much about leading as it is about service to one’s superiors, to one’s peers, and to one’s self. Rick graduated from Michigan State University where he studied jazz drumming and English, then toured the country with his band for several years. Rick developed an interest in building clocks after finding some ancient books on the subject. He has discovered a latent love for mechanical design, and now adapts brilliant old mechanisms for his large, custom hardwood creations and has a full woodworking and metalworking workshop in Kalamazoo. The waitlist for his work currently goes out about three years. “CC instilled in me the desire to learn. That, more than anything, has pushed me forward in my professional life. Mr. Normandin’s band programs were profoundly educational for me, teaching me a lot about how I learn and how best to work with my peers. Mr. Bob Scheuermann’s AP English class was also intensely formative for me as a reader and a writer. Mr. Scheuermann still stands as one of the greatest teachers I’ve ever had, and I will always owe a great debt to him. If I hadn’t taken his classes, I don’t think I would have felt comfortable diving into an obscure subject like clockmaking, with no one to teach me about it except old books.” Favorite memory: Writing the drumline feature with my buds still remains a highlight of my life. We had a huge drumline my senior year (34 members), and working with them through the logistical/musical challenge of that feature was an incredible experience. There was a seriousness to that group of guys beneath the surface, and everyone learned to bring out his very best.

JOHN HAMANN ’01 After attending the University of Michigan on an NROTC Scholarship, John graduated with a degree in Economics and a Navy commission. He went on to flight school, then was deployed in support of Korean and Japanese defense, flew all over the Pacific and Caribbean responding to natural disasters, and began humanitarian missions. In 2012, John was assigned as a Navy Operational Test Engineer and began testing new Mine Warfare technology. He completed his Master’s Degree in Systems Engineering from John Hopkins University, transferred to the Navy Reserve, and accepted a position at Alion Science and Technology. Continuing to test Navy equipment, John was awarded the “US Navy Test Team Member of the Year in 2017.” He is now the Lead Engineer at Booz Allen Hamilton, working in cyber security and defense communications networks and remains a Naval Reservist. “Catholic Central was an amazing part of my life that provided me a tremendous sense of who I was as one of Mary’s ‘sons of Central honor.’ The academics provided a great start to prepare me for the rigors of top universities. The intense work ethic and discipline learned at CC not only from outstanding teachers in the classrooms, but also from amazing coaches on the fields, gave me experiences that challenged me to the point where I gained confidence and knowing that, ‘if I did it there, I can do it again.’ But one thing that CC gave me that no other institution could provide was the inexorable pride in being a Catholic man that only the likes of Fr. Donoher, C.S.B., Fr. Ward, C.S.B., Fr. McKernan, C.S.B., and Fr. Menner, C.S.B. could provide, and I’m sure their spirits are still working today, with the intercession of Mary and the Holy Spirit, to ‘inspire us evermore.’” Favorite memory: I cherish memories of Fr. Donoher’s class. I still remember and even use a few mnemonics and songs. He was a proud member of a Navy family and shared with me mementos of his brothers’ service - one as a pilot and the other as a chaplain - that I still have displayed on a bookshelf and which motivated me during my Navy career. Then, of course, there were DRIVE pep rallies, football games, the senior “walk out,” and all the other amazing traditions and fun times with friends. There really is no other place like CC. MITCH HANCOCK ’00 While he was at Central Michigan University, Mitch earned Division 1 NCAA All-American honors as a senior, and was named “Most Outstanding Wrestler” in the program. Before returning to CC, Mitch spent one season as an assistant coach at CMU and helped lead the team to a MAC championship and Top 15 Team finish in the NCAA. Mitch joined the teaching staff at CC in 2006 and became Dean of Students in 2015. He has implemented the Medical Emergency Response Team, the ALICE protocol, and has certified CC as a Michigan Heart Safe School. Mitch completed his 13th 30

year as the head coach of the Shamrock wrestling program. The team has reached the state final nine times since 2010, winning 8 state titles. His wrestlers have won 48 individual state titles and earned an additional 54 all-state finishes. Coach Hancock has been named Regional Coach of the Year Three times, Michigan Wrestling Association Division 1 State Coach of the Year in 2010 and Michigan Wrestling Coach of the Year in 2012. “The faith foundation and belief in God created an avenue for me to pursue my goals with an ambition and desire that’s uncommon. Catholic Central delivered so many instrumental figures into my life: Fr. Elmer, C.S.B. ’46, Fr. Donoher, C.S.B., Fr. Ward, C.S.B., Fr. McKernan, C.S.B., Fr. Menner, C.S.B., Mr. Rodriguez, Mr. Santello ’58, Mr. Lewis, Mr. Hayes, Mr. Petrovich, Mr. Gagnon, Mr. Dudas, Mrs. Valant, Mrs. Sharkey, and so many more who had a positive impact on me and my development as a young man.” Favorite memory: Wrestling for Coach Rodriguez and the many memories we shared as a team. Coach Rod taught me that a Bible could be highlighted and it was ok to take notes in it. He taught me that with Christ in my life, I could accomplish anything. He showed me what love is and how passion could lead someone to be successful. Coach Rod will always remain as a pillar in my life. JAMES JOLLY ’00 After graduating from Western Michigan University, James interned for Senator Carl Levin in Washington, D.C. He then attended law school at the University of Detroit Mercy, while clerking for the 47th District Court, and court officer at the 16th. After passing the bar, he was appointed Magistrate of the 16th District Court. In 2015, James ran for City Council in Livonia, and still serves. James began teaching at Lawrence Technological University in 2012, where he oversees state and federal compliance issues and university accreditation. His own practice focuses on district court cases, estate planning, and business law. “Catholic Central prepared me for the rest of my life. I am indebted to my teachers, coaches, and classmates for giving me an environment where I felt loved and challenged to be better than I am. I am thankful that my parents sacrificed to send me to CC, because it set me up to do well in everything that came next. Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge are the most important lessons learned at CC, and this gives me direction for everything I encounter in my different roles. I always enjoy meeting fellow Shamrocks, because I know there is shared experience and instant camaraderie no matter when they graduated.” Favorite memory: The normal things like student cheering sections at games, things Fr. Menner, C.S.B would say as I struggled with Algebra, and Fr. McKernan, C.S.B. asking us, “What kind of man will you be?” while drawing a castle on the chalkboard.

JOE LUPINACCI ’03
While he played soccer at Oakland University, Nicholas earned his undergraduate degree in Business and his MBA. He then played soccer in Australia for two years. When he returned to Michigan in 2015, he founded Fleece & Thank You, an innovative 501(c)3 organization that provides psychosocial support and programs to children in the hospital and provides comfort to 22 children’s hospitals and units in Michigan. Fleece & Thank You has rolled out Flockets, a fleece pocket t-shirt line that funds micro-loans for families with a child battling cancer. Nicholas’ social impact portfolio extends beyond the nonprofit, as he also owns and operates two other social impact companies. The first is KindKatch, a video engagement platform for an organization to show its supporters the direct impact of their contribution, and the second is Crate of Good, a social subscription box with mission-driven products inside. “I honestly think I mention the three core values of CC on a weekly basis: Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. I could talk at length about these three values and how important they are to me, how integral they have been to my development, and how I credit so much of those values to my time at Detroit Catholic Central.” Favorite memory: Winning the DRIVE Hallway Decoration Contest four years in a row is very memorable. Lots of hours put into those hallways! We knew we had the senior year won, so we made a banner that said “4-Peat.” I still have that banner in my closet.
After graduating from Wayne State University, Joe went on to earn an MBA and a law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy and clerked for a judge in Chicago. In 2011, he started practicing law in Chicago, representing auto companies and hospitals. In 2017, Joe was appointed Assistant Attorney General for the State of Illinois. In 2018, Joe left the practice of law and became a Special Agent in the FBI. He was assigned to the Public Corruption & Civil Rights squad in the Detroit Field Office, and Joe currently serves as Detroit FBI’s Civil Rights Coordinator and International Human Rights Coordinator. “At CC, I learned the value of working hard for my goals, accepting criticism, and seeking advice from those with more wisdom. I learned that career goals worth achieving require rigorous obedience to the same core values taught at Catholic Central: Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.” Favorite memory: March Madness. I thought of it every morning during Special Agent Training at Quantico, which a CC grad can best describe as a combination of March Madness, wrestling, and AP Government.
MARK LAROSA ’01 After earning a BSE for Computer Science Engineering and a Master of Science in Human-Computer Interaction, both from the University of Michigan, Mark headed to Silicon Valley, where he held various technical sales and solutions architect leadership roles in several start-ups. He eventually became Principal Solutions Architect at Amazon Web Services’ Strategic Accounts division, where he was responsible for one of the largest customers in AWS history. Mark is currently Operating Partner in venture capital at Amplify Partners, where he specializes in helping technical founding teams design and execute go-to-market strategies in both early and mid-stages. “Discipline and strong academics were central to my success throughout my life. The hard work mentality that was instilled at CC has provided a competitive edge when working with folks from around the world. Learning humility, tolerance, love, and acceptance early in life was very helpful in later years, and CC played a huge part in developing those qualities. Working in student government and spending time building out CC’s first website and technology platform was extremely crucial in inspiring my college/ work direction as well as all of my interest in the computer/high tech space throughout the rest of my career.” Favorite memory: Boys’ Bowl week in general was such a special time, especially senior year when we got to plan and be a part of the entire design. Driving into the gym at the kickoff assembly of the DRIVE in one of the first electric cars from Ford with Fr. Ranalletti, C.S.B. was really amazing.
MIKE MARTIN ’08 After four years of football and graduation from the University of Michigan, Mike was drafted by the Tennessee Titans as the 82nd overall pick. He started for five years and ended his career in 2016 with the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles. Mike knew football was a means to an end, so after earning his MBA, he became a financial advisor. He’s been in business for two years and has made great progress. He approaches every client in the same way: to preserve, protect, and grow their assets as if they were his own. “The CC motto of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge was something I didn’t understand when I walked through the front door as a freshman. I didn’t know the impact it would have on me and how accurate the motto would be in the fabric of who I am. I had many coaches, teachers, and role models in my time at CC who were integral to my success. They were men and women who took a vested interest in my development as a young man because they truly cared about me. People like Aaron Babicz ’93, Gene Grewe, Fr. Ward, C.S.B.,Tom Mach, Coach Rod, and Mitch Hancock all had a part in making me into the person I am today. I am grateful for my time at Catholic Central and look forward to being involved in the school’s continued growth and evolution throughout the coming years.” Favorite memory: My senior year was the best time I had during my four years. The DRIVE, Boys’ Bowl, senior smoke day, and the brotherhood that we created was the best time. There are endless stories, but being selected as team captain in all the sports I was involved in really meant a lot to me because of the leadership role for which I took responsibility. It was about setting the example through action, not just talk.

MATT MILLER ’99 While at the University of Michigan, Matt was a member of the Marching Band and is active in the U of M Band Alumni Association. Matt graduated with a degree in Economics and holds his broker’s license in real estate. He was the 2016 President of the Ann Arbor Area Board of Realtors and was named the 2019 Realtor of the Year for the Ann Arbor Area. He is on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army and is highly involved in the many service projects of the Ann Arbor Jaycees, from whom he received the Chairperson of the Year award and Most Dedicated Jaycee award. “Being surrounded by young men who were very focused on their studies and their goals was extremely beneficial for me. This positive influence helped me prioritize my work and showed me the importance of being fully engaged in my high school experience. Simply put, the strong effort put forth by my classmates rubbed off on me. As an athlete and a bandsman, I was also given the opportunity to learn the importance of teamwork, leadership, and striving toward a common goal. My teachers and coaches were wonderful mentors at a very formative time in my life. Whether it be the work ethic instilled, the relationship building, or any of the many other lessons learned, I will be forever grateful for my time at Catholic Central.” Favorite memory: During my time at CC, the band was blessed with the opportunity to travel to Paris in my sophomore year and to Rome in my senior year. These trips were incredible, both for their cultural education and friendship building. Travelling with my very best friends to these amazing cities is among my fondest memories of CC. DANIEL MOORE ’03 After graduating from the University of Michigan, Dan worked in the Philadelphia public schools as an Americorps volunteer. He then spent three years in the U.S. House of Representatives working on appropriations, foreign policy, and education. Dan attended Howard University Law School and then returned to Detroit as a judicial law clerk in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. After a year-long clerkship, Dan became a commissioned officer in the Navy’s Judge Advocate General Corps. Since becoming a judge advocate in Washington, D.C., Dan has advised naval commanders on personnel and operational matters. As a litigator, he defends sailors and marines in court-martials and at the Navy and Marine Corps Court of Criminal Appeals, where Dan is currently stationed. “My time at Catholic Central prepared me for my career by teaching me to be a leader. As an attorney and as a naval officer, I must use my judgment at all times. Catholic Central was the foundation of my judgment and character. What Catholic Central teaches young men about character is its best asset.” Favorite memory: Time with friends. The time with them in class, at lunch, and at practice, joking and laughing, are what made my time there special. We grew up at Catholic Central. 32

He is the marketing director at Treadstone Funding, one of the nation’s top boutique mortgage lenders. In 2019, he published his first book, “TAGThe Tangible Action Guide,” which was featured as a #1 new release on Amazon. Matt is also the founder/owner of Maltese Marketing, a digital marketing firm headquartered in Grand Rapids, along with teaching digital marketing at a local university and being on the Foundation Board of Metro Hospital. “Catholic Central prepared me well by teaching self-discipline and surrounding me with like-minded ‘in-it-to-win-it’ students and teachers. My time at CC also helped me hone my love of writing, which led me to college scholarships and more recently my first book. Also, I always had the CC Shamrock logo on my resume, and it led to being hired into what is a career I could have never imagined.” Favorite memory: Being a Freshman at my first DRIVE assembly and thinking, “This can’t be what high school is like for everyone else.” Also, spending time editing the school newspaper with Mr. Petrovich and my co-editor Chris Amos ’07. We had so much fun, and it made me realize that work is only work if you don’t love it. HARRISON NGUYEN ’08 Harrison attended Rice University and was accepted into the Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars program, doing research on disease pathways, eventually leading to the publication of over 80 research articles and book chapters. He attended Baylor College of Medicine, earning his MD with Distinction and a diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. After medical school, Harrison earned dual degrees in a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Public Health at Yale University. He completed an internship at Baylor, where he was recognized for his excellence in patient care. Harrison is currently a Dermatology resident at Emory University and was recently named a Rising Derm Star by Pfizer. “I had outstanding teachers at CC- notably Mr. Neal Alpiner, Mr. Carl Weiss, and Mr. Gene Grewe – who left indelible impacts on my career. Mr. Ken Anderson was also an excellent counselor to whom I am very grateful for guiding me through a critical portion of my academic path.” Favorite memory: The dances and the assemblies.
NIKO PALAZETI ’10 While a student at Michigan State University, Niko was a three-year member of the football team and a two-time Spartan letter winner. Injuries prompted him to retire from the sport in 2013, and he spent that season as a student intern in the MSU Strength & Conditioning Department. After graduation, Niko became a graduate assistant and earned his Master’s degree in kinesiology. His first full-time position brought him to Mississippi State University for one season, and then he moved on to the University of Maryland. Niko is now in his fourth season as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach for the Ohio State Buckeyes. “I owe Detroit Catholic Central more than words can express. I was instilled with the virtues of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. I learned how to be a man of faith and to positively contribute to society. I was challenged, but supported, was taught the work ethic, perseverance, and faith needed to be successful by selfless priests, teachers, and coaches who devoted their lives to the development of young men. I am beyond blessed to have attended Detroit Catholic Central and attribute its teachings to the man I am today.” Favorite memory: Winning the 2009 Football State Championship with a group of young men that are still my brothers today. CONOR PARKS ’08 After graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Conor moved on to Purdue University, where he completed a Ph.D. in the same field. His topic resided at the intersection of high performance computing, statistical physics, and materials science to predict crystal structures directly from atomic constituents. Currently, Conor is a scientist at the University of California, San Diego where he researches the use of artificial intelligence to discover cancer therapeutics. His next objective is to commercialize his work at UCSD as a biotech startup. “CC surrounded me with the best and the brightest students from across the state of Michigan. In addition, the faculty and staff at CC cultivate an environment that encourages both athletic and academic excellence by rewarding hard work. For example, I wanted to take two science classes my sophomore year, a somewhat unorthodox request that required the permission of Mr. Gagnon. When I pleaded with Mr. Gagnon that I really wanted the work, his response was ‘how can I say no to that attitude?’ That is CC in a nutshell. By placing me among the best, and then encouraging me to compete academically, CC catalyzed the development of my work ethic that has carried me throughout my career. Whatever success I have achieved to date, I owe in part to CC, especially to teachers like Fr. Wheeler, C.S.B., Mr. Barker, Mr. Gagnon, and my Shamrock peers who encouraged me to be the best I could be.” Favorite memory: The CC football games. Even from the west coast, I try to follow all the news and highlights I can. CC does a great job of keeping alumni abreast of Shamrock news via social media.
JOHN PERKOVICH ’02 Previous to his current position as Chief Development Officer at Sonwill Logistics, John was the Vice President of Carrier Sales at Coyote Logistics. In 2019, John was named a Crain’s 40 under 40 Recipient. John graduated from Michigan State University. “The level of engagement and the genuine concern for my development that I received while at Catholic Central provided me with an understanding of how to treat others, regardless of their position, status or experience.” Favorite memory: Winning three Hockey State Championships - ’00, ’01, and ’02. MATT PETERSEN ’98 After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in Lyman Briggs Biology, Matt received his medical degree from Wayne State University. He did a one-year general medicine residency at St. John Hospital in Detroit before completing a four-year residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. Matt is now an emergency and trauma radiologist for Indiana University Health and is an associate professor of Radiology and Imaging Services for the Indiana University School of Medicine. His work serves most of the Level 1 trauma centers in Indiana and portions of surrounding states. Matt’s goal is “to serve patients as I would want a close family member to be treated: with accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness.” Matt has also worked in the large-scale imaging that accompanies the NFL combine, held annually in Indianapolis. His interest in ballistic imaging has helped improve patient outcomes and led to keynote lectures, in addition to co-authoring several publications. “When I reflect on my time at Catholic Central, I recall times of great fun, personal sacrifice, and self-growth, while striving toward the ideals of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. Most of the time, these tenets were pursued in a team and family-like setting among teammates and CC brothers. Never have I experienced such a concentration of broader life lessons than as I had while wrestling (captain ’97-’98) and as class president (’95-’98) at CC. Countless times since leaving high school, I have associated a present challenge with that posed by the sacrifice and accountability necessitated by such endeavors. I am consistently reminded that with great effort and sacrifice, faith, and family, nothing can hinder achievement. It is these principles which are paramount to my career and non-career endeavors, and underlie most of my success in those capacities.” (continued next page)

MATT PETERSEN ’98 continued Favorite memory: In Fr. Menner’s freshman math class, students were seated in order of class academic success, and he returned graded tests in reverse order of achievement, announcing each pupil’s grade. About half way through the year, there was one test during which I blanked, and I had failed to properly prepare. Although I felt it warranted and just, I feared the public embarrassment that was to come. The next day, as Father made his usual course up and down the rows, and he had announced the penultimate grade, he silently placed my test with a red 60 and returned to his seat without an additional word. I was shocked and grateful, but the true meaning of Fr. Menner’s gesture wasn’t readily apparent to me. It was only years later, after dealing with various levels of personal triumphs and disappointments that I understood Fr. Menner’s action to be quite Christ-like. Over time, I have come to accept various forms of failure as motivation and sometimes a necessary part of the human experience, and I have no greater example of this than that which occurred nearly 25 years ago in a small classroom at Catholic Central. MARK PFITZENMAIER ’03 While at the University of Michigan, Mark earned a Bachelor’s degree in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and a Master’s degree in Pharmaceutical Engineering. He spent time working for JHP (now Endo) Pharmaceutical in Rochester, Michigan, before moving to Bryllan, LLC, a pharmaceutical manufacturing organization in Brighton, where he serves as Vice President of Operations. “I am very grateful for my time at Catholic Central. I believe it prepared me for further academic pursuits, but more importantly, it prepared me for life in the real world. The motto of the Basilian Fathers is ‘Teach Me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.’ These are values that go beyond earning a diploma, stressing the need to grow and develop into men who are prepared for life’s challenges, personally, and professionally. It seemed that everyone’s talents were on display: Fr. Donoher’s fundraising efforts, leading the Freshman Class to first place every year, seeing the gym on Breakfast Drive transformed for each assembly and contest, the impersonations, the hilarious skits, the Band, and Student Council. If I could go back and experience anything from my time at CC, it would be DRIVE Week.

JORDAN REILLY ’08 While at the University of Michigan, Jordan earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering. He then attended Michigan State University College of Human Medicine for medical school. During his experiences in high school, college, and medical school, Jordan became enthusiastic about surgery. He is now a third-year resident in General Surgery at Beaumont Royal Oak. “Catholic Central is where I acquired my work ethic for college, medical school, and my surgical residency.” Favorite memory: Learning all of the school songs from Fr. Donoher and meeting some of my best friends for life. SCOTT SANSOVICH ’09 Scott attended Harvard College, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in English with a secondary concentration in Computer Science and was also a Varsity letter winner on the Track & Field Team. He started his career as an investment associate at a Boston venture capital firm, and then moved to AppNexus as a product manager. Scott is now co-founder and Chief Product Officer of Eden Health, a company that provides medical care for the employees of some of the top companies in the country. He is responsible for developing the company’s telehealth platform and leads operations alongside its team of medical providers. “My time at CC taught me an incredible amount: a sense of intellectual curiosity, attention to detail, discipline, and a strong work ethic, the importance of taking care of your physical fitness alongside your education or professional pursuits, and the value of a team and a community.” Favorite memory: Playing in the Battle of the Bands with Shaun Sova ’09, Buck Neal ’09, and Louis Ronayne ’09. SCOTT SCHRIMSCHER ’07 Scott earned his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan, where he played football for the Wolverines. After graduating, he began his career with EXOS, first in Phoenix, then Chicago, and now in Manhattan Beach, California. Scott is the Director of Global Program Operations at EXOS, with more than a decade of experience supporting a broad range of clients including youth athletes, professional athletes, Olympians, and high performing teams such as the U.S. Navy, Intel, SKLZ, Precor, and Adidas. He currently leads the Global Fitness Program Operations at Google. Scott was recently elected to the Board of Governors for the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology. “I was fortunate to be surrounded by incredible people during my time at Catholic Central. There is a certain level of expectation that you have as a student at CC, and that fosters a culture that instills values that you take with you over
the course of a lifetime. I didn’t realize at the time how far the values of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge will take you in both your personal and professional life. Those values, along with a lot of learning and failure along the way, still guide me to be the best husband, leader, and person I can be today. The commitment it takes to be an active part of CC culture is not small and is not for everyone. The level of commitment and expectation from myself and those around me is something I have taken with me from CC into my career.” Favorite memory: There are so many that I cherish, but more than anything, I cherish the friendships that I built at CC. Many of those friendships will be ones that last a lifetime, and our time at CC established a shared set of values and experiences that make those bonds inseparable. JOE SGROI ’98 While at the University of Michigan, Joe played football, where he was a four-year letter winner and received the Dr. Arthur Robinson Award as Michigan Football’s top scholar athlete. He remained at U of M for law school. Joe is now a partner at the law firm of Honigman LLP, where he is the leader of the firm’s Restructuring and Insolvency practice group, is a member of the firm’s Board of Directors, and is the firm’s Chief Value Partner. He has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America, DBusiness Top Lawyers, Michigan Super Lawyers, and Leading Lawyers Magazine Michigan. Joe was also named as one of the 30 in their 30s by DBusiness in 2010. “Everything at CC, whether academics, athletics, or really anything else, was always centered around dedication and hard work. Those values helped prepare me for college, for being a college athlete, for law school, and for my career as an attorney. Hard work, dedication, and focus on achieving my goals was the foundation that was built at CC and has helped propel me throughout my career.” Favorite memory: While I have many great memories, it would be hard not to choose winning a football state championship in 1997. We were able to achieve something that nobody expected us to do and that many of us had been working toward every day for four years. I was able to celebrate it with my closest friends-many of whom remain my closest friends to this day. JIM SPIEWAK ’01 After a year in the US Hockey League, Jim earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and moved to southwest Florida, where he spent three years in the financial services industry. Participation in a documentary about a nearly tragic high school hockey game led to a career change, and Jim became a journalist. He started as a reporter at a cable station in Sarasota, then moved on to Fort Meyers as an investigative reporter, and eventually began anchoring. His work gained
two Suncoast EMMY Awards, five Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, and a National Edward R. Murrow Award for his report on powerful antibiotics. Jim spent three years in Memphis, where he again gained recognition for his investigation of the lead pipe and water issues in that city. Jim also published a book, “Start Saving Now,” a financial literacy book written for young people. Jim currently works in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the 4:00 p.m. anchor for the CBS affiliate. He also helps produce and report for Addicted Utah, which investigates issues of addiction. In his 18 months in Utah, Jim has been awarded a Rocky Mountain EMMY Award. “Catholic Central taught me many things, but Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge are the foundation that I still carry with me today. CC challenged every aspect of those foundations, helping me prepare for the highs and lows of life. Academically, athletically, socially, spiritually, and emotionally, CC molded those values to help me confront the rapidly changing world.” Favorite memory: The three state championships in hockey are the highlights, but my greatest memory is the overall experience with classmates, teachers, and friends. CC is unique, and only those who get to experience it truly understand. I gained and strengthened relationships while at CC and, to this day, call three of my classmates my best friends. Okay, who am I kidding…getting Fridays off after DRIVE is my favorite memory! EVAN STOCKTON ’14 Evan graduated from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University in 2018 and was named one of the Top 30 Sportscasters under 30 in America that fall. He was also honored as the top collegiate play-by-play broadcaster in the country as part of the Jim Nantz Award. For the past two years, Evan has served as one of the television voices of Western Michigan athletics, aired on ESPN+ and ESPN3. He has also called the MHSAA Basketball and Football playoffs through FOX Sports Detroit and served as a TV and radio play-by-play broadcaster with the Fort Wayne TinCaps (affiliate of the San Diego Padres). “Catholic Central laid the foundation for everything that has happened in my broadcasting career. The Goodness of the school instilled in me a desire to treat everyone I meet with the kindness and respect each deserves. The Discipline of the challenging curriculum, combined with all my extra-curricular activities, fostered an unyielding work ethic and desire to improve. The Knowledge I learned in (and out) of classes opened my eyes to the wider world and empowered me to take creative risks at work. The core tenets of Catholic Central helped put me in a position for longterm success in all areas of my life, and I could not be more thankful.” Favorite memory: I have two: Beating Cass Tech my senior year in football after having been throttled by them the previous two years. It was a testament to our hard work since the day we first lifted weights and ran sprints as freshmen. The Senior Smokeout in the parking lot where we all gathered to smoke cigars, eat brats, and reminisce were a couple of the best hours of my life. FORTY UNDER FORTY • SPRING 2020

TOM VOUTSOS ’10
After high school, Anthony was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 23rd round, but chose to accept the scholarship from Eastern Michigan University, winning the MAC title as a senior. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2003 and played 6-½ seasons, making it to AAA in Toledo with the organization. He retired from baseball in 2008. Anthony opened his first Jimmy John’s in 2003 and now owns 50 restaurants. He is the largest owner in the country. “CC made me into the man I am today. The discipline I learned at CC guided me through college, sports, and now business. The friendships and connections continue to help me in business and in life.” Favorite memory: Baseball State Championship in ’99. We had lost in the state semis the year before, and we worked so hard the next year to achieve our goal.
After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, Tom was commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps. Tom served as logistics officer in the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines based in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He deployed to Romania as a part of the Black Sea Rotational Force. He planned logistics for multinational exercise. While in Latvia, he had the opportunity to catch up with fellow CC alum, then Lt. Matt Thompson ’10, who was there as part of another training event with the Army. Following his time in the Marines, in 2018, Tom began working for TRU Colors, a for-profit brewery that hires active, rival gang members who have come together to stop street violence and bring peace to their community. TRU Colors employs active gang members because they maintain the street influence needed to unify rival gangs and because of the belief that gang street skills can translate into entrepreneurial spirit and business success. TRU Colors builds bridges using seemingly incongruous things - beer, people, ideas, beliefs, and perceptions – and holds the belief that every person should have the opportunity to live a prosperous life and live in peace. Since 2019, Tom served as president of TRU Colors, overseeing the day-to-day operations. In the fall of 2020, Tom will be attending the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He and his family will be moving back to the Midwest. “CC was instrumental in my development as a man of faith. At CC, I developed an intellectual curiosity and a solid moral compass that has served me through college, in the Marines, and now in my current role as president of TRU Colors. Teaching giants like Mr. Weiss, Mr. Jones, Mr. Scheuermann, and so many more teachers helped sharpen my mind and challenged me in ways that helped me grow. I still remember Mrs. Sharkey’s lesson that half of leadership is showing up (which I tell my team now), working with Matt [Thompson] on the Spectrum with Mr. Petrovich on the art of storytelling, or Coach Cessante telling us ‘what you do in the dark will shine in the light.’ I am eternally indebted to Catholic Central for the trajectory it set me on in all aspects of my life - physical, moral, academic, and professional.” Favorite memory: I have so many, but I’ll choose two. Winning the state championship and being a part of the most selfless team that I have ever encountered outside the Marines. The second is bowling on Thursday nights with my friends during senior year because we not only had Friday off, but Monday as well.
AARON VELTHOVEN ’01 Aaron attended both Michigan State University and Eastern Michigan University before beginning his career in marketing and event production at Ogilvy, Mather, and Meredith Corporation. He currently serves as Vice President and Executive Producer of Marketing and Events for Michigan.com, the operations company for Michigan’s oldest and largest media properties, including the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News. As one of the youngest executives in company history, Aaron oversees all marketing and communications across the state and leads Michigan.com’s growing event business, such as the Free Press/TCF Bank Marathon, the Freep Film Festival, and the Free Press High School Sports Awards. Aaron serves on the board of the Detroit Economic Club Young Leadership Council and is a previous board member for Habitat for Humanity. “Attending CC was a tremendous experience. It’s hard to imagine a better environment to build the foundational elements of who you will become one day. The teaching centered around Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge is fundamental to who I am as a professional and have benefited me greatly throughout my career. The friendships and relationships I built during my time there, as well as the alumni network and brotherhood, are an invaluable asset in my personal and professional life.” Favorite memory: So many. Boys’ Bowl and DRIVE weeks were always great. The euchre games before school and in homeroom were a blast as well.

TIM ZAJOROS ’98 After Tim graduated from Western Michigan University, he began his professional career with an automotive marketing company, and soon after left to work in the Agent Training Program for United Artist Talent Agency. He is co-producer and co-founder of Armory Films, a film finance and productions company that creates, develops, produces and finances high-concept and commercially viable content. Armory recently wrapped production on El Tonto, starring Kate Beckinsale and John Malkovich. The company produced Peanut Butter Falcon, starring Shia LaBeouf, Dakota Johnson, and Bruce Dern. Tim produced Arctic which had its premiere at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. He also produced and financed Mudbound, starring Carey Mulligan, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017. Earlier, Tim wrote and produced a documentary, Building for Life, about povertystricken individuals in North Thailand who are diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, which was presented at the United Nations Headquarters. “I didn’t really understand the value of the Catholic Central education until I went to college. If it weren’t for the preparation I received at CC, it would not have been possible for me to excel. The second attribute Catholic Central instilled in me, and the most vital, is the importance of values and integrity in business and in life. What I can promise students at CC is that throughout life, regardless of profession, you will encounter people who do not share your values. I am thankful that CC’s values remained strong within me and prevented me from falling into many traps. As a result, my personal and professional lives have flourished, and people seek to do business with me because of the values that I’ve been able to maintain.” Favorite memory: Many of these memories come from Boys’ Bowl. The history behind that day is truly something special. That day brings together such a massive number of alumni that you not only see, but also feel the profound impact that CC has had on so many lives. It’s a special day and a special time that few, if any, students outside Catholic Central will ever be able to experience or understand. #40 This Shamrock is YOU. “A Drive Through the Past”
The DRIVE Results To say this year’s DRIVE was a huge success would be an understatement. The Student Ticket DRIVE is an annual event that is synonymous with school spirit at Catholic Central. Each year, students sell raffle tickets and collect money for tuition assistance. The seven school days that make up “DRIVE week” are comprised of half days and assemblies that promote school spirit and competition among the students, faculty, and staff. The theme for this year was, “A Drive Through the Past.” Each of the grade levels had separate themes which had all been themes in past school years. The seniors were Cities. The juniors were Decades. The sophomores were SuperHeroes. The freshmen were Animal Planet. This year, CC students not only brought in a record total, but they broke the previous record by almost $100,000! The grand total was a staggering $606,514.13. Luke

REV. RAYMOND PARAMO, C.S.B. January 27, 2020. Fr. Paramo joined the Basilian Novitiate in 1955, was ordained in December 1966, and spent more than 50 years working in various capacities at Catholic Central. He served as a teacher of physics, mathematics, and theology, Vice Principal, Dean of Students, Mission Director, and established the Fr. Daniel Dillon Award in 1968 which is given to the graduating senior with the highest cumulative grade point average. He also served CC as the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Archivist, and Editor in Chief of the Alumintor. He was the recipient of the Fr. Current Events at Catholic Central
Boardercross Club The Boardercross Club has been in existence for about 10 years. This season, under second-year coach Andrew Fee, our team doubled in size from last season! Combined with the newly-formed program at Mercy High School, we had 48 racers at the hill. Although lack of snow was challenging, the team still finished strong. CC finished in 2nd Place at the West Region, qualified for the Team State Finals, and had six racers compete at Individual State Finals. At States, the Shamrocks finished in 4th Place. Congratulations to all of our racers, coaches, and parent moderators!

CC Hires Health & Wellness Counselor
On Wednesday, March 11, four Catholic Central students participated in the 2020 Michigan Science Fair, hosted by the Science and Engineering Fair of Metropolitan Detroit (SEFMD). They were photographed with Jim Meloche ’61 who is a member of the Board of Directors of the SEFMD.
In February 2020, Catholic Central hired Jodi Siberski, a CC alumni mom, as our new Student Health & Wellness Counselor. Jodi has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology, a Master of Arts degree in Counseling, and an Advanced Specialization in Couple and Family Counseling from Oakland University. Her licensing credentials include: Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Michigan, National Certified Counselor, Approved Clinical Supervisor, and Certified Anger Management Specialist II. Jodi will provide individual and group counseling to students, assist the counselors, develop learning opportunities and programs for faculty, staff, and parents to learn more about youth mental health and wellness, and be an in-school subject matter expert in mental health for the school community. Jodi had two sons graduate from Catholic Central, Michael ’11 and Jay ’14.

HOSA by Kyle Rodrigues ’20 The Catholic Central HOSA-Future Health Professionals were back at it again this year with stellar performances at the regional and state competitions. Before the competitions commenced, the Catholic Central HOSA, in partnership with Global Health Charities, organized the Clean Birth Kits Service Project aimed to make clean birth kits for women birthing in unsanitary conditions around the globe. The project, which was performed in tandem with the Mercy HOSA and St. Catherine’s HOSA, resulted in 239 clean birth kits made and 478 lives saved! The Regional Competition was next on the agenda, where the Shamrocks had great success. Eight students placed in the top three in their event, and even more qualified for States. Every one of the state qualifiers who didn’t medal placed fourth, which is just out of medal contention! In early March, the Shamrocks headed to Traverse City for the State Competition. Patrick Michel ’23 had an outstanding performance, placing 3rd in Medical Spelling, Patrick Michel ’23 and the HOSA Bowl team consisting of Jackson Peurach ’20, Kody Takada ’20, Armen Vartanian ’20, and Kyle Rodrigues ’20 had an impressive 5th Place finish.

2019-2020 Academic Team by Mr. Christopher Gismondi ’00
The 2019-2020 Catholic Central Academic Team continued the long-standing tradition of academic excellence set forth since the program’s inception in 1986. Throughout the season, the CC Academic Team climbed in the national rankings from being unranked in the preseason to #16 in the country when our season, unfortunately, ended early in late February.
With a strong supporting cast of underclassmen, who also won a novice tournament and finished in the top-3 of several varsity tournaments, the DCC Academic Team looks to return strong whenever play resumes again.
Tournament Victories: DCC Novice Tournament (Novi, MI) Ithaca Fall Tournament (Ithaca, NY) University of Michigan Autumn Classic (Ann Arbor, MI) Alderdice Invitational (Pittsburgh, PA) The Varsity A Team returned one starter from the previous season’s team, ranked #12 in the nation. The A Team went on to win five tournament championships and finish as a runner-up in two other tournaments, which included wins in New York and Pennsylvania. The team finished the season by winning 109 games with only 26 losses, including beating the #4 team in the nation. Prior to the cancellation of the season because of COVID-19, the A Team was a favorite to win a 10th consecutive NAQT State Championship Tournament. Many individual Shamrocks earned top scoring distinctions throughout the season. These included captain Robert Dedvukaj ’20, Drew Laroo ’22, Michael Yousif ’22, and Will Carstens ’23.

Distributive Education Clubs of America
by Ross Ziegler ’20, CC DECA Vice President of Communications DECA is an international club in which business minded students compete in events that span from role-plays, to virtual stock market competitions, to written business plans. Not only do the students gain knowledge of business principles, but they also learn how to communicate and apply critical thinking skills. From Catholic Central DECA’s origination up through our fourth year as a chapter, membership has risen from a mere 26 to an astounding 164 members. Each year, DECA leads a nationwide fundraising challenge that supports local children in their desire to attend the annual summer camp sponsored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The Executive Board, along with our advisors, Ms. Amanda Price and Mr. Mike Mach ’03, felt that this fundraiser would be a great opportunity for our club to support a valuable cause greater than us. Due to tremendous generosity from so many supporters, we are thrilled to have raised $18,065, benefitting the MDA and its children. This incredible effort earned our chapter the distinguished honor of the top fundraising school in the nation! The DECA Emerging Leader Honor Award “recognizes DECA members

Former CC Lacrosse Coach Dave Phillips Inducted into MHSLCA Hall of Fame At the young age of 21, Dave Phillips was hired to start the lacrosse program at CC in 1981. He led the Shamrocks through the 1986 season. During that time, Dave was named Coach of the Year three times and led the Shamrocks to four State Runner-up finishes (1982, 1983, 1985, and 1986). Furthermore, Coach Phillips’ teams were highly successful in the annual Midwest Tournament. CC won the lower bracket of the Midwest Tournament in 1982 and was the top seed in the upper bracket in 1985 and 1986. During his years as coach, numerous players went on to play in college. For his years of service at CC and for helping establish youth lacrosse in the CYO, Dave was inducted into the Michigan High School Lacrosse Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2020, joining current CC Head Coach, Dave Wilson ’88, who was previously inducted in 2018.

Keeping Up with Catholic Central Athletes
Basketball The Varsity Basketball Team, led by head coach Brandon Sinawi, finished the season with a 7-13 overall record. Coming off one of the most exciting seasons in program history, the Shamrocks persevered through a difficult season which saw CC fall short in many games by a small margin, including those in the always tough Catholic League. The team played hard from start to finish and represented Shamrock Nation honorably. The season came to an end in the District round of the playoffs.

Skiing The Varsity Ski Team, led by longtime head coach Tom Gable, finished the season with a 5-4 overall record. The Shamrocks ended their season by placing 13th at the Regional Championship. Caden Kapilla ’21 earned the
team’s Most Valuable Skier honors. Blake Brykalski ’20 was nominated for the CHSL Scholar Athlete Award, and Chris Ehresman ’21 received scholar-athlete recognition from the Michigan High School Ski Coaches Association. 50

2020 Varsity Swimming & Diving Team
Swimming & Diving The Swimming & Diving Team, led by head coach Jessica Stoddard, had another record-setting season in 2019-2020. The Shamrocks won the Oakland County and Catholic League Championships and qualified 15 individuals for the State Finals while setting multiple pool, county, league, and school records. Unfortunately, the season came to an unfortunate and abrupt end in the state semifinals due to the coronavirus. At the time, CC was ranked #2 in Division 1 by the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. Coach Stoddard was named Zone 2 Coach of the Year by the MISCA.
Wrestling State Champions The Varsity Wrestling Team, led by head coach Mitch Hancock ’00, continued to uphold the high standard of excellence throughout the 2019-2020 season. The CC wrestlers won the Oakland County Championship tournament as well as the CC, Observerland, and Brecksville, OH, Invitationals. The Shamrocks finished the season with a 20-3 overall dual meet record and won the Catholic League, District, and Regional Championships before claiming the third consecutive, and 15th overall, Division 1 State Championship. Furthermore, CC finished the season ranked #5 in the country. For the fifth time, CC qualified 14 wrestlers for the Individual State Finals where they had 11 all-state finishes, including nine wrestlers who advanced to the championship match. Of those nine finalists, six wrestlers won individual state championships. The team also earned Academic All-State honors from the Michigan Wrestling Association.

Keep Up With CC Online Prayer and Special Need Requests This year we introduced a web page on the CC website for everyone in the CC family to submit prayer and special need requests. To submit Prayer and Special Need Requests, please log in to myCC from our homepage at www.catholiccentral.net. Once logged in, navigate to the “Resources” tab and click the box that says “Prayer Request Form.” This will take you to a secure form where you may submit your request to be posted to the CC website. Prayers and special need requests are typically posted within 24 hours to our CC website. If you are having any trouble logging in or it is your first time, please watch the video on our home page explaining how to log in. To view the Prayer and Special Need Requests web page, go to www.catholiccentral.net/pray. Or you may go to www.catholiccentral.net and click “Prayer Requests” at the top right. All prayer and special need requests are welcome. Over the last few years, Catholic Central’s presence online has been growing steadily. ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY of Historical Digital Audio and Video Recordings The Detroit Catholic Central Advancement Office announces a new item on the Alumni web page. It’s a link to the Detroit Catholic Central archival digital library. The digital library is an online database of the school’s historical digital audio, video, pictures, and documents. It’s our hope that the digital library will allow our community to enjoy reminiscing about their Catholic Central experience. ARCHIVAL INITIATIVE The digital library is the result of a new initiative to digitize our audio and video recordings along with important photos and documents. While we have been working on this project for more than a year, we are still in the early stages. DIGITAL CONVERSION SUPPORTED BY SPONSORS The digital files currently available on the site have been sponsored by generous alumni who have covered the cost of digital conversion. If you are interested in contributing to this project or would like to sponsor the conversion of a specific event, please contact Jim Gibbons ‘68.
