A Message from the

President

Dear Alumni of Detroit Catholic Central and CC friends, Logic would seem to dictate that attending a school is a phase in one’s life that has a definite beginning and end, and that once the end comes, a person moves to the next phases of life and leaves the school behind. Perhaps we can point to other periods of our life where that logic holds true: having a paper route, having a job in college at a restaurant, being in the cub scouts or being on some kind of a team. There was a definite beginning and end, and then we moved on. For most alumni of Catholic Central, that logic doesn’t hold true when speaking of the overall CC experience. I write this letter minutes after helping a member of the Class of ’55 edit a letter he is sending to his classmates that graduated from CC over 60 years ago. He carefully explains where his classmates are, which ones attended the reunion in Venice Beach, and who from the class needs the prayers of his classmates. The Lord continues to bless CC as a community of thousands of alumni and their families, parents, grandparents, faculty and staff (past and present), Basilian Fathers, and current students and their families. We are connected first and foremost through Jesus Christ, Whose Resurrection celebrated at Easter remains the focus of how we view all of life. We continue to rely on the inspiration of His Mother and ours, Mary Alma Mater, Mary kind and nourishing Mother, who leads us to Her Son. The Spirit that permeates our entire CC community flows through the generations so that the four years of a man’s experience as a Shamrock and a Man of Catholic Central, helps shape his life, and is an integral part of who he becomes for an entire lifetime. There are many ways in which we are grateful for having the privilege of being a part of this blessed community. One element is the powerful presence of CC alumni who play an active role in the Mission of CC today as we continue to educate young men in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. We are especially blessed to have so many graduates dedicate their lives to the Mission as teachers, administrators, coaches, and other roles here at CC. When I came to CC as principal in 2010, I was met with a certain suspicion that I sometimes found disconcerting. Although I am the graduate of another Basilian high school, I am not a CC grad. I underestimated the importance of that in so many hearts and minds. When I became president and was replaced as principal by a CC graduate, Fr. Dennis Noelke, C.S.B. ’71, I noticed how he was warmly embraced with a certain trust that comes from being a CC alumnus. Indeed we have many fine Catholic educators here who are not graduates. At the same time, it’s important to point out the irreplaceable value of a Man of CC being taught by or coached by a fellow Shamrock. This issue of the Aluminator is dedicated to those men who make tremendous sacrifices to be full-time Catholic educators dedicated to the Mission of Catholic Central. We are grateful for their continued dedication and commitment. I know that my fellow Basilians who are now enjoying the beatific vision in paradise inspire our CC grads and are very proud of their dedication. May Mary Alma Mater continue to inspire us evermore!

Fr. John B. Huber, C.S.B., Ed.D. President

MILITARY Serving Our Country

Vietnam hero honored 50 years later By Judy Putnam, Lansing State Journal September 28, 2015. Reprinted with permission.

Jim Dunn ’63 U.S. Army Captain - Vietnam

In May 2014, a manila envelope arrived in the mail. Casey said she was beyond stunned to see commendations and medals, representing a total of 50 awards, tumble from the envelope.

LANSING — For a good 10 to 15 years after serving in Vietnam as an Army captain, Jim Dunn ’63, an East Lansing lawyer, never spoke of his military experience, which included an astounding 1,600 hours flying combat missions in some of the war’s deadliest battles.

“I realized this man was really a hero. I knew he was shot down. I just didn’t know everything,” she said. The couple has five sons and three granddaughters.

And, until last year, even those closest to him were unaware of the many medals he had earned in the military — 50 in all, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, a top medal awarded for heroism. He earned not just one, but four of them. It took nearly 50 years, but Dunn’s actions in Vietnam are finally gaining public recognition. Dunn, 71, the deputy director of the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, was honored last September with the Veteran Tribute from the Volunteers of America at the Michigan State University Demmer Center. Volunteers of America is the state’s largest nongovernment provider of veterans services. The award raises funds for work with homeless vets. Dunn, who had a long career as a lawyer before joining the veteran’s agency in 2012, oversees the two state-run homes for 750 veterans in Grand Rapids and Marquette. He likes to talk about veterans — unless that veteran happens to be him. “It is such an honor to represent veterans that when I talk about myself I feel strange because there are so many veterans who have so many stories beyond me,” he said. His reticence dates back to the days after the Vietnam War, when many civilians and war protestors viewed returning soldiers with contempt. Dunn kept his war experiences to himself. Though he was in Vietnam for a year and a half, he didn’t know he had earned the medals. “I didn’t have any idea that I had done anything out of the ordinary at the time,” he recalls. At some point he knew that he had recommendations for medals in his record, but for unexplained reasons, they were never sent to him, and he got busy with a career and family.

SURPRISE PACKAGE IN MAIL A few years ago, Nan Casey, his wife of nearly 30 years, decided to find out more and wrote the Army seeking his medals.

M I L I TA R Y • S P R I N G 2 0 1 6

Dunn finally received his medals in a ceremony on the state Senate floor on Memorial Day 2014. It’s an impressive war record. “It is incredible. He’s a highly decorated veteran,” said Jason Allen, senior policy advisor at the veteran’s agency.

…even those closest to him were unaware of the many medals he had earned in the military — 50 in all…

Dunn was just 20 when he dropped out of the University of Detroit and enlisted in 1965. He tried to find a spot that would keep him out of the infantry, where casualties were high. He ended up in Officer Candidate School and, after graduation, you guessed it, in the infantry in Vietnam in January 1967, assigned as a “forward observer.” He describes the job as the one who looks up to locate the enemy fire when everyone else is ducking. A lieutenant, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion of the 16th Infantry Rangers, a regiment of the 1st Division known as the Big Red One, one of the units that led the Army’s D-Day invasion in Normandy in WWII. HELICOPTER SHOT DOWN In the fall of 1967, he took to the air as an Army pilot and aerial observer in helicopters and small planes. He was promoted to a group of four young officers who worked directly for the commanding general of the division, which covered a large area between the city of Saigon and the Cambodian border to the north. Their job was to fly over combat areas to draw fire in order to locate the enemy. He was in daily combat, racking up a rare 1,600 hours of combat flying time. He did a 13-month tour in Vietnam, and signed up for a second one. Five months later, he was shot down in a helicopter. The pilot died. He survived but was seriously injured and his foot needed reconstructive surgery. It was his 23rd birthday. “I personally wouldn’t have chosen to go into combat but it was the best thing that ever happened to me because it gave me the opportunity to learn that I could do anything,” he said. As Dunn showed me copies of the single-sheet typewritten papers from 1967 and 1968 that documented his actions leading to the medals,

CLASS OF 1966 INVITATION AND REMINDER FOR THEIR FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY one moved him to tears. He recalled trying to rescue a company commander in February 1968 near the village of An My. He personally knew the commander, who had been marooned in a tree line separating him from the rest of the unit. Others stranded with the captain had already been killed and the officer was under fire from 15 enemy soldiers a few yards away. He was in radio contact, but didn’t know the commander’s exact location.

Following the practice begun last year by the class of 1965 on the 50th anniversary of their graduation, we are inviting the class of 1966 to submit their biographies for inclusion in the next issue of the Aluminator.

Jim Dunn ’63

Flying as low as 25 feet to the ground and under fire, Dunn and his pilot found the commander after a 45-minute search, but the officer was too close to the enemy for artillery fire from the helicopter. Dunn started shooting with small arms from the helicopter, inflicting several casualties. As the Viet Cong began to flee, Dunn killed 13 with artillery fire, according to the file. But it was too late for the captain, who was killed.

Please send us by email your item of 200 to 300 words whenever you can but by no later than June 30, 2016. It should be written in the first person. Please look at the Fall 2015 issue of the Aluminator to get an idea of what to include. If possible, please send a jpeg picture of yourself. (If you send a paper photo by regular mail, it will be scanned and returned to you.) If you send a jpeg or paper photo, please include a descriptive caption. A request for these biographies was sent by email, but if your email is not up to date with us, you may not have received it, therefore consider this either an invitation or a reminder. Submissions and questions should be sent to aluminator@catholiccentral.net

CRUTCHES USED TO SERVE Dunn talks about the tremendous fear in battle, but he also recalls fondly the camaraderie and joy. As he recovered in a Tokyo hospital from his 1968 crash injuries, he was given a pass. He decided to sneak drinks to 40 enlisted men in his ward from the officer’s club. The guys were immobilized in their beds. So, to make it possible to carry so many drinks, they all donated their urine bottles with an enclosed drink order. Dunn taped the bottles to his crutches and hobbled to the officer’s club. It took him hours to get back, but when he got there, the wounded soldiers were waiting. “I sat there and, if you can envision this, a ward of guys tied to their beds, literally, passing around wood crutches to take their pee bottle off the crutch,” he laughs. “It was the most wonderful sight of my life. I felt like I’d really brought some happiness to people.” Dunn said that he saw daily acts of heroism by his fellow soldiers, another reason it’s hard for him to accept a vaunted status. He also honors the elderly veterans now in need as heroes. “Those are the heroes to me. Every time I walk into those homes, I feel like I’m walking onto hallowed ground,” he said. “... It’s not a handout. Every veteran living in one of those homes earned the right to be there.”

Reflections on CC Students In The World

CC STUDENTS AS SEEN BY STRANGERS Our students out in public make good impressions on those who know them. However, occasionally, total strangers receive the same impressions and are motivated to express them. Here is one note Fr. Noelke received recently. -Ed.

From: S. Ansley Sent: Thursday, October 22, 2015 2:00 PM Subject: Congrats! To Whom It May Concern, Just wanted to send a quick note to acknowledge the kindness and positive demeanor a group of your athletes showed my daughter and me yesterday afternoon at the Valero on the corner of Wixom and Grand River. We were stopping in on our way to my daughter Azaleah’s choir practice to grab a quick snack and while she was trying to pick the perfect treat about twenty of your boys came streaming in also looking for the ideal snack. Most boys their ages would have either pushed their way through and completely disregarded my tiny 5 year old, but not these guys. All of them were mindful of where she was looking and even allowed her to squeeze around them to make sure she didn’t miss seeing any of the treats on the shelves. In our current social climate it is good to see that there are teenage boys out there that do not follow the crowd mentality and disrespect others with some misgiven sense of entitlement. If that wasn’t enough I was completely caught off guard when we approached the register and the line was enormous given that each of the boys was purchasing something and they without hesitation told us to go in front of them. They didn’t know us and still showed compassion in not making us wait at the end of the line to check out and be on our way. I applaud the teachings and morality you are instilling in these young men and hope that my son Griffin (3 years old) would behave in a similar fashion when he is older. I don’t know much about your school since I grew up in Texas but after the display I saw yesterday I would have no problem supporting your institution and possibly sending my son there one day. Thank you for your time and helping to raise these young men to become pillars of our community! Sincerely, S. D. Ansley VP Quantitative Analytics Vice Capital Markets 8

Gentlemen:

As the 2015-2016 school year winds down, a recap of recent academic and athletic achievements of the many fine students of Catholic Central High School is in order: In the arena of athletic competition, hearty congratulations are due to the following: • the Hockey team: 2016 Division 1 State Champions • the Wrestling team: 2016 Regional Champions, and five individual state champions: Ben Kamali ’18, Kevon Davenport ’19, Cameron Amine ’19, Tyler Morland ’17, and Nick Jenkins ’17 • the Bowling team: 2016 Catholic League Champions • the Ski team: 2016 Catholic League Champions Congratulations to all of you! In the halls of musical competition, many congratulations are due to our Symphonic Band, who received a rating of “1” (the highest possible) at the recent Michigan School Band and Orchestra Festival. The String Orchestra and Concert Band also each received the rating of 2. In the arena of academic competition, the Catholic Central Academic Team’s Varsity A Team was ranked #1 in the nation, with the B Team being ranked #38, giving CC the highest ranked A and B Teams in the nation. The A Team has won three tournament championships, beaten the Nos. 19, 16, 12, 5, 4, and 2-ranked teams in the nation, and beaten college teams like Michigan State, Wright State, and Illinois. On Saturday, March 19, the Varsity A Team won the State Championship for a record-tying sixth straight year. Finally, in the arena of legal competition, still in its infancy at Catholic Central, the Catholic Central Mock Trial Team made the State Finals this year. This is only the team’s fourth year in existence. With the able coaching of Judge Lita Popke and Catholic Central Librarian, Erik Nilsen, along with the assistance of my son, Patrick A. Foley ’03 and our honorary Shamrock, Mr. Jesse Stec, as well as the unfailing contribution of numerous other Catholic Central Alumni attorneys and judges, the team was able to achieve this great success. Catholic Central excels in so many fields of endeavor, both academically and athletically, that one may have a tendency to view these championships and academic accomplishments as “business as usual.” I ask all of you Alumni to harken back to your days in the classroom and out on the playing field and remember the incredible amount of intensity, both physical and emotional, that you committed to your studies and athletic endeavors. Our young men have continued in that fine tradition and with your support, will continue to do so into the future. I want to share with you a story of a certain alumnus who to me is the quintessential essence of someone who attended Catholic Central and takes his being a member of that community probably far more seriously than even he realizes. One of my schoolmates, Pat Coffey ’73, has been organizing and attending a “CC Birthday Club” meeting nearly every month of the year for the past five or more years. A group of guys, usually not less than half a dozen, and sometimes as many as 15-18, gather at Sheehan’s on the Green (owner Tim Sheehan ’73) for a few drinks, a celebratory toast to the birthday boy, and an evening of catching up about friends, health, job searches, employment opportunities, retirement dreams and realities, sharing stories of our children, and for those lucky enough, stories of their grandchildren. At a recent meeting Pat shared with all of us that one of our classmates is suffering a reoccurrence of his ongoing struggle with cancer. I know all of us in attendance last week will keep our friend and classmate in our prayers. My point is, to be a part of the “CC Alumni Association” does not require a financial contribution. It does not necessarily require attendance at football games or sporting events, or even an appearance at our lovely campus. While all of those things would be wonderful, and we would love to see each and every one of you gentlemen whenever possible, and certainly would welcome and appreciate any financial contribution to Catholic Central, you could make a truly significant contribution as that made by one such as Pat Coffey, someone who keeps the flame burning, who keeps friends in contact, someone who cares about his fellow Shamrocks. On that note, I wish you well and ask that God bless all of you and your families. If any of you are “keeping the flame,” such as our friend, Pat Coffey, we would love to hear your story.

Alumni Association Mission Statement The mission of the Catholic Central Alumni Association is to provide services, benefits, and activities of interest to the alumni and foster an alumni body which is interested and involved in the affairs and functions of the school, and to provide such assistance to the school as may from time to time be requested of it.

Upcoming Reunions Campus Crusades The Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations began organizing CC reunions on several area college campuses a few years ago. Over the last couple years, these reunions have grown in number and become quite successful. These reunions have been branded as “Campus Crusades” and serve as a way for all CC alumni attending a particular college or university to meet for lunch or dinner, get an update of what’s happening at CC, reminisce about glory days spent at the alma mater, and strengthen the bond they share as CC brothers. Below is a list of the campus crusades from this school year. PROFILE

Spotlighting Alumni & Members of Our CC Family

ALUMNI PROFILE: Orin Mazzoni III ’92 by Shaun Sova ’09, Associate Director of Advancement WHERE DID YOU GET THE IDEA FOR ‘SHARING THE ROUGH’? Being raised in the jewelry world my entire life, I met some pretty extraordinary people. When I was about 15 years old, I met a man named Roger Dery, who at that time supplied Orin Jewelers with colored gemstones for custom designs. This is pre-internet, when times changed and the world become smaller with the Internet, colored gemstones (along with everything else) became more accessible and less expensive. Roger knew he had to separate himself from the competition. He had always traveled around the world, but now he was traveling to gemstone mines and buying directly from the mine owners. He started studying gem cutting, and 20 years later is highly regarded as one of the best gem cutters in the world! TELL US HOW YOU GOT INTO FILMMAKING. My love for film began at a very young age. My mother and I would go to the movies Saturday afternoons, unplanned and spontaneous. I remember being at the mall in Novi and she would look at me with a big beautiful smile and say, “Wanna go see a movie?” Of course I was all for it, I loved it, and I loved spending the time with her. Jumping ahead about 15 years I remember being part of what I believe was a grand time for cinema. Most of my friends loved film as much as I did, and I think we all dreamed of making movies, but we didn’t have the capabilities that we have today with new digital cameras that are quite inexpensive for the quality they produce. After my undergraduate degree I went to work for my father, and it was one of the greatest things I have done. After a year at Orin Jewelers I went and received a second degree in Gemology at the Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, CA. I came back and spent the next ten years working with my family and enjoying that time. I’ve always wanted to be a filmmaker. I finally had the courage to approach my parents about going back to school. The support was instant and of course my first feature film is dedicated to them. I ended up getting a MFA in Motion Pictures and Television from The Academy of Art in San Francisco. I had the “producing” background from working in business, and I had the “directing” background from managing a team of people. What I needed was the skills in camera, editing, and most importantly the contacts and friends you make in school. To receive my MFA, it was required that I do a thesis project, and it was a three-year program. I was very lucky: I was able to skip around to different classes, rent equipment that was not part of my curriculum (yet), and even given a budget from the school to have major theatrical productions. So instead of doing one thesis project, I directed and produced two, produced another two, and directed a major theatrical release of Ethan Coen’s “Almost an Evening” in both San Francisco and Detroit.

Roger and his wife, Ginger, now travel the country visiting jewelry stores along the way showing some of the finest gems you will ever see. When I was studying film in San Francisco, and they were in town, we would always have a nice dinner at one of my favorite places called Nob Hill Café, an Italian restaurant separated from the craziness of the city. When you open the door the smell of the garlic is heavenly. Over a bottle of Chianti, they asked me if I would like to join them on their next trip to East Africa. I jumped at the chance, my first words being “Can I bring my camera?” That was September 2011, and I took over 70 hours of test footage to see if there was a story, and there was - a beautiful one that shows the economics of gemstone mining in developing countries: Kenya and Tanzania. In 2014 I took a full crew back to East Africa and shot the real film in 17 days. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. WHAT WAS YOUR MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THE FILMMAKING PROCESS FOR THIS DOCUMENTARY? The film is 100% organic, and although I am the “director,” I did nothing more than put the pieces in place - and film everything I could! There was no script, and there are over a dozen very key players in the film. When I got home and had 30 terabytes of footage on 30 individual drives, and then a backup of each one, the organizational process of what we shot was mind-blowing. But at the end of each day, I would do two things: clean all the equipment from the beautiful deep red African dirt, and write what I shot that day. The real challenge, the hardest part of this film, was editing the first four minutes. I had the entire film edited and ready to move on to sound design, color correction, and original score, but I could not get the beginning the way I wanted it. This film is about all the people that it takes to make a beautiful piece of jewelry, from the miners to the faceter, from the designer to the consumer. It took me weeks to get this right, giving each person in the film the right place in the introduction without overloading the audience, and I think it turned out perfect. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON IT? We started principal photography January 1, 2014 in East Africa, and the film was finally finished on April 1, 2015. Jewelry is a treasure, it is an heirloom, it has memories. This documentary is the first of it’s kind, showing a gemstone going from mine to market.

Left: (L-R) Orin and Tina Mazzoni; Ginger, Roger, and Rachel Dery; Middle: Rough gems; Right: Kabana Mine workers. Other page: Orin Mazzoni ’92. Inset: 49ct green garnet. WHAT’S NEXT? WILL YOU STAY WITH DOCUMENTARIES? I definitely want to explore other genres, specifically narrative suspense. I’m also working on a script that’s a period piece, combining the lives of both my grandfathers into one character. I am so fond of the Cinéma vérité style of documentary filmmaking, also known as “observational cinema,” where the subjects are not aware of the camera. I’m also very fond of theater, and have done quite a few productions. WHO WAS YOUR FAVORITE TEACHER AT CC AND WHY? Oh there were so many. Mr. Gagnon’s homeroom with the Nerf basketball hoop and his snake; Mr. Garlicki (“The Gar”) and his mysterious power to make you epically nervous; Room 421, which is undisclosed information I can only write for those who know it’s special abilities. I’m going to do a switcheroo here and say Mr. Hayes. I hate to admit it in writing, but I spent a lot of time in his office. However, he taught me a lot. I remember I was going on a trip to Atlanta at Emory University with the debate team, and I had to leave school Thursday morning. I had a thick beard by the time I was eight years old (joking of course, but it got thick in high school) so I had to shave daily, and, of course, I wouldn’t, so it was a constant battle. So I had to come in early Thursday morning to take an exam, and the day before Mr. Hayes said, “If you don’t shave tomorrow, you’re not going to Atlanta.” Well, I show up to school early, unshaven. I take the test, go into the bathroom, shave, and make it to my first class before the bell. On my desk is a piece of paper from Mr. Hayes that says, “Come see me.” I’m feeling great – I’m shaved, and he’s got nothing on me. I’m sitting outside his office and he walks by and looks at me and says, “You’re not going to Atlanta.” I’m in awe as this giant man walks by and I’m stuttering, “But but but…I SHAVED.” He ignores me, and I sit there for the next four hours. Finally, he calls me in his office, tells me I’m suspended from school for not shaving, but, because I have been such a pain to my mother, he’s letting me go to Atlanta so SHE can have a break. Speechless. But lesson learned…be prepared.

I never felt judged, because there wasn’t a rich versus poor or athlete versus scholar mentality. There is no “I” in “team,” and for me, CC was one unified team of kids. My career now, as a film director, is about understanding people. It’s about managing a situation, and when you stop judging others, you better understand the situation, and thus can right the ship when things start to get a little off kilter. That’s essentially the job of a director. It starts with a vision, a story, a script, and it ends with a team of people that have all succeeded because they had a strong leader. That’s what CC gave me, but I still have a lot of work ahead of me, and a lot of learning to do. Thankfully, my parents had the foresight to give me a good education, and for that head start I am truly grateful. WHAT IS ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD WANT TO SHARE WITH SOMEONE GETTING STARTED IN FILMMAKING? There are two positions in film that are the hardest to break into and make a living at, and that’s acting and directing. If one of those two is your goal, go for it. I did. But learn a “trade”, and by “trade” I mean learn how to be a camera operator, a lightning technician, a set designer - something that requires a lot of skill - but, more importantly, you will get work. If you position yourself as, say, an actor/camera operator, you will not only be able to get work in camera, but will also make connections along the way for your acting career. So get on set, no matter how you do it, but make sure you can pay your bills so you can keep your dream alive. So while you’re finishing your script, or taking a Sanford Meisner course, you’ll be getting a paycheck in the field you love. Another piece of advice, everything can be done, and don’t ever let anyone tell you it can’t. My father always taught me in the jewelry business: “You don’t have to know how to do it yourself, but you have to know if it can be done.” Knowledge is the pathfinder. ANY OTHER THOUGHTS/COMMENTS YOU WOULD LIKE TO MAKE? Mom, I’m sorry you got so many calls from Mr. Hayes. I love you!

HOW HAS CC PREPARED YOU FOR YOUR PROFESSIONAL CAREER? My experience at CC was one of the greatest times of my life. I find myself looking back at the way I saw CC and I feel like everyone felt the same. There was a bond of brotherhood that transcended stereotypical high school behavior. I was captain of the debate team, yet my friends were on the football team. And this cross-supplied to all sports, academic or athletic: everyone had respect for each other, and we always had each other’s back. I will still brag to this day when we win a state title in anything, or a national title in quiz bowl or hockey. If you meet someone out of random occurrence, and you find out you both went to CC, it’s more powerful than two people that meet who both went to USC, Notre Dame, or Michigan, or were in the same fraternity. I don’t think that there is another school like it.

Activities Shared

Among Basilian Schools

CC Hosts St. Michael’s For Kairos Retreat The deepening brotherhood between our three North-American high schools continues to explore and benefit from fresh opportunities to interact and learn from each other. Over the weekend of January 28-31, six juniors from St. Michael’s College School and Fr. Jeff Thompson, C.S.B. traveled to Catholic Central High School to join juniors and seniors here for its 17th Kairos Retreat. Kairos means “the Lord’s time.” The Kairos program offers junior and senior high school students an opportunity to embrace the spirituality of their lives by exploring their relationships with God, each other, and themselves. The retreat is coordinated and executed by a team of student leaders, and the presentations are made by students, alumni, and teachers. Discussions and sharing sessions can be intense and inspiring. Students always come away from the retreat weekend feeling energized and invigorated for a renewed and life-changing approach to their lives and relationships. Catholic Central’s Kairos XVII was held at Colombiere Retreat Center in Clarkston, Michigan. The six juniors from St. Michael’s who took part in this retreat, along with the direction of Fr. Andrew Leung, C.S.B., plan to bring the spiritual experience to their brothers at St. Michael’s during the next academic year.

For the Basilian Fathers and our students, the day represented a historic moment in our apostolate of Catholic education, because it was the first time that students from St. Michael’s College School, St. Thomas High School, and Catholic Central High School came together to participate in the same event on the same day. During the evening before the competition, teams from all three Basilian schools, along with their teachers and administrators, joined together to celebrate the Eucharist, to intermingle, and to get to know each other better over a scrumptious dinner. Such diverse co-curricular experiences and exchanges between brother Basilian high schools enrich the educational experience of our students and gladden the hearts of confrères who are blessed to witness their growth in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.

Catholic Central Celebrates Mary

Alma Mater in May

by Fr. William Riegel, C.S.B.

One of the most moving moments at Catholic Central occurs when our students at a school Mass or Assembly turn to sing our school anthem to Mary Alma Mater. It is at these moments that we join ourselves to the long, treasured tradition of this school, the Basilian Fathers, and the Church herself. Our devotion to Mary is rooted in two significant New Testament accounts.

In John’s gospel Mary stands with the “beloved disciple” at the foot of the cross a reminder where the church must always be found in wonderment of such love. It is here that Jesus, in his final moment, creates a radically new community, not based on blood relationships, but rather faith, when the Lord gives us a new mother: “behold your mother.” This great woman of faith is now the community’s protector and nourisher. We can even say that, in a sense, this is where the Church was born. It is from the Lord’s own blood and water from his pierced side that this new community of believers is formed. The men of Catholic Central are faithful in understanding such a model and mother. It is fitting, then, that the last mention of Mary in the New Testament occurs in the Acts of the Apostles at Pentecost where Mary gathers around herself that first, frail community of disciples to await “the promised gift of the Spirit.” At that moment, she nurtures the others, giving them hope. It is in this reality that Pope Paul VI declared her to be not only the Mother of God (Theotokos) but also Mother of the Church (Mater Ecclesiae). This should not be a surprise as it has been so from the beginning of the Church. This Woman, this Mother, this Advocate, first in Faith, is indeed our own Protector and beloved by all at Catholic Central. We “proudly wear her royal blue and white.” We join with the whole Church and our own Basilian Fathers who have a special devotion to her, in honoring our Mother in this her month of May!

The knot of Eve’s disobedience was loosed by the obedience of Mary, for what the woman Eve had bound fast through unbelief, this did the virgin Mary set free through faith. St. Irenaeus

ANNUAL

DRIVE

Theme for 2016: “Drive through History”

2016 DRIVE Results - Total $ Raised

The DRIVE Results This year’s DRIVE was another huge success. The Student Ticket DRIVE is an annual event that is synonymous with school spirit at Catholic Central. Each year, students sell raffle tickets and collect money for tuition assistance. The seven school days that make up “DRIVE week” are comprised of half days and assemblies that promote school spirit and competition amongst the students, faculty, and staff. The theme for this year was “Drive Through History.” Each homeroom selected a movie, musician, sports moment, or other theme within their respective decade and decorated their homerooms and hallways accordingly. The freshmen represented the 1990s, the sophomores 1980s, the juniors 1970s, and the seniors 1960s. The decorations were outstanding. The creativity of our students was obvious. The videos, entertainment, and various shenanigans that filled the week were most enjoyable. The total amount brought in reached $452,097.13! That money will go directly toward tuition assistance for next year’s students. Principal Fr. Dennis Noelke, C.S.B. ’71 made it clear to the students that many families will be able to receive much-needed financial support toward tuition because of their efforts and generosity. For their efforts, Fr. Noelke rewarded the students with 11 DRIVE holidays.

from the beginning, alumni have been on the staff and faculty of catholic central. At first, of course, when the staff was composed mostly of Basilian priests and scholastics, alumni on the faculty were those who had joined the Basilian community. The school was founded in 1928 and as early as 1931 there were vocations to the Basilian Fathers from Catholic Central. These soon returned as teachers and administrators.

Today when the total number of Basilians is small, the number of alumni on the staff and faculty is large and composed mostly of lay teachers. There are twenty-five of them. We thought you would be interested in learning how they came to be on the faculty of their alma mater. Here are the accounts of those that responded to our request for that information. -Ed.

DAVE WILSON – 1988 I am in the Social Studies Department and teach both World History and American Government. I am also the Varsity Lacrosse Coach. In my ten years here we have been to the finals five times. I came to CC in 2005 while in the midst of a career change. I was mature enough to appreciate all that CC had to offer me in my adult life as well. I live in Southfield with my wife, Lisa, our daughter Isabellah, our Newfoundland Sweet Pea, and our beagle named Summer. Our oldest, Lauren, was married on October 3, 2015.

CHRIS GISMONDI – 2000 I graduated from CC back in 2000. In the interim, I graduated with honors from Madonna University with a degree in English and history, and I taught 7th and 8th grade for two years at Consortium College Preparatory School in Detroit and coached their basketball team. In 2008, I received a forwarded e-mail from my former student teaching mentor-teacher that mentioned Catholic Central was looking to hire an English teacher. I applied and within the week was accepting a position to return to my alma mater. Between my first year back and now, eight years later, I have married Elizabeth, had two children, Cordelia - 6 and Dante - 1, and have been named one of the coaches of the Academic Team, a goal I’m particular proud of as Mr. Weinberg [founding Coach of the Academic Team] was a teacher/role model to me. As co-Coach of the Academic Team, my proudest accomplishment was helping to guide the 2015 team to the school’s and state’s first ever #1 national ranking and a PACE National Scholastic Championship.

NIEKO IANNI – 2007 After graduating from CC in 2007, I attended the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in English in 2011, and Eastern Michigan University, where I earned my teaching certificate in 2013. I began teaching at Ypsilanti High School that summer. In 2013-14, I taught freshman English at Lansing Catholic High School. I returned to CC as the Director of Alumni Relations in the summer of 2014, and I began teaching English in the fall of 2015. In addition to teaching, I also coach wrestling, which I have done since graduation, and I assist with the production of the Aluminator. In July 2015, I married my wife, Karen. We currently live in Wixom. 28

CRAIG J. McMICHAEL – 2001 I graduated from CC in 2001. I am in the Social Studies Department, teaching AP Government and Politics and The Civil War. As Technology Integrationist I assist with the development and integration of iPads into the curriculum. I am a Varsity Lacrosse Coach and Varsity Football Coach. In July 2013, I married Mary Abraham. I received a BA in history from Georgia State University in May 2005. I received an M.A.T. in Social Studies Education from Wayne State University in May 2007 and received an M.A.Ed. in Educational Technology from Michigan State University. CC was my first job out of college. I was hired after completing a semester of student teaching at the school in the winter of 2007. From Dearborn Heights, I was the first in my family to come to CC. I was looking for a school with great academics and athletics. I do volunteer work at local soup kitchens and Meals-on-Wheels. I have taught at the adjunct level for both Wayne State University and Michigan State University.

MIKE MACH – 2003 My name is Michael Mach and I have been happily teaching at Catholic Central for seven years and coaching football here for ten years. As a graduate of CC, class of 2003, I consider it an honor to serve my alma mater. After graduating from high school, I attended Michigan State University where I completed my undergraduate degree as well as my teacher education courses. While still taking classes at MSU, I began coaching football at Catholic Central in 2006. I began on the freshman staff and have since worked my way up, serving as JV head coach along the way, and now working in the role of offensive coordinator. After finishing my college courses at MSU, I did a year of student teaching at Southfield High School in 2008. I received the opportunity to join the teaching faculty of Catholic Central in 2009, and am now a proud member of our Social Studies Department. I teach United States and World History, as well as Economics. Additionally, I work with the student leadership at CC, serving as the Sophomore Class Moderator. I have been married to my wife Sarah for five years and am the father of one, my daughter Natalie. She is my pride and joy.

KEVIN GRIFFIN – 1996 I am a graduate of the Class of 1996. I am currently in my eighth year of teaching at CC. I am the English Department Chairperson. I teach Advanced Placement Literature, English IV, Honors English I, Creative Writing, Journalism, and Public Speaking. I am a member of our School Improvement Committee. I am moderator of our school-wide Poetry Out Loud and Fr. Enright Writing Competitions. I am the editor of our school literary journal, Trinity. I am a speaker at many of our Kairos retreats. I am the Fundraising Moderator for our newly founded Finance Club. I was an assistant coach for our Wrestling and Golf teams from 2008-2015. I married my beautiful wife, Premu, in 2004. We have two sons, Emmett (Class of ’27) and Henry (Class of ’29). We are members of Our Lady of Victory Parish, and we live in Plymouth. Before coming back home to CC, I taught at Queen of Angels School in Chicago from 2000 to 2002. I then moved to Grand Rapids, where I taught at Immaculate Heart of Mary School and coached wrestling at Grand Rapids Catholic Central from 2002 to 2008. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and writing, traveling with my family, dining out with my wife, and golfing and fishing with my sons.

JASON JACKETT – 1999 I graduated in 1999. I am a Theology Teacher and Assistant JV Basketball Coach. I am married to Beth Antoniette Jackett from Canton, Michigan who is a Spanish teacher at Annapolis High School. We have three children, Ethan (stepson -14 yrs.), Thomas (3 yrs.), and Sophia (4 months). After spending two years in the missions in Belize, Central America, teaching math and religion, and after five years discerning a priestlyreligious vocation with the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT), my discernment and studies took me to Capulin, Colorado for novitiate; Corpus Christi, Texas for philosophy; and Rome, Italy for theology. In that time I attended Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio (BA in Theology with a major in Math), then Our Lady of Corpus Christi, Texas (Associate in Philosophy), and the Angelicum Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, Rome (Bachelor’s in Theology). I came back to CC in July of 2010. As I was leaving SOLT I found that there was a vacant theology position available. I tutor in the evenings and weekends and volunteer in youth ministry.

BEN HERMAN – 1998 I graduated from Catholic Central in 1998 and studied History and Religion at Michigan State University. I then went on to Madonna University where I earned my teaching certificate. I taught at Wayne Memorial for one year and then came to Catholic Central where I have taught both history and religion for the past eight years. I met my wife Victoria at Michigan State, and we now live in Livonia with our two children. Victor is 6 and Mary Jane is 2. While at Catholic Central I became a coach on the Academic Team and now share the head coaching responsibilities with Chris Gismondi ‘00. In our three years as co-head coaches we have earned three state titles and a national championship. Catholic Central is my home. It has been my home since I walked into the cafeteria in the fall of 1994.

AARON RUMBERGER – 1992 I graduated from CC in 1992. I have been teaching in the Social Studies Department for 18 years, mostly Psychology and U.S. History. I was named Social Studies Department Head in 2015. From 2001 to 2009 I was a JV Baseball Coach. In 2016 I became head Freshman Baseball Coach. For 17 years running I have worked in the Intramural Flag Football Program. I have been married to my wife, Jennifer, for 15 years. We have two boys, Daniel James, class of 2020 and Jacob Richard, class of 2023. After high school I graduated from Concordia University in Ann Arbor in 1997. I received a Masters in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University in 2005. In 1997, I spent the school year being a long-term sub in Plymouth Canton and Farmington school districts. In the summer of 1998, with the help of then-athletic director, Bob Santello ’58, I was interviewed and hired by then-principal Fr. John Menner, C.S.B. Besides coaching my sons’ summer baseball and basketball teams, I am also a registered Michigan High School Football and Basketball Official who has done state playoff games for both sports.

GREG NORMANDIN – 1978 I graduated with the last class from the Outer Drive campus in 1978. I am in my 34th year of teaching at Catholic Central since Fr. Acquaro, C.S.B. hired me in the summer of 1982. My teaching responsibilities include all of the music classes: Concert Band, Symphony Band, String Orchestra, Jazz Band, Beginning Band, Marching Band, Music Theory, and World Drumming. I also direct the Praise Band which plays at the school Liturgies. Since 1991, our groups have performed in ten European and three Hawaiian Festivals. The most recent was in Madrid, Spain, where the Marching Band participated in the Cabalgata de Reyes. I currently serve as an elected member of the Executive Board of the Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association. My responsibilities include hiring all of the judges for the State Festivals and supervising the training of all new judges. We hosted the most recent training at Catholic Central. My wife, Carolyn, and I have been married since 1984 and have three children ages 27, 25, and 21.

JOSEPH MACH – 2003 I graduated from CC in 2003. I am a Health and Physical Education Teacher and Varsity Football Assistant Coach. Following graduation, I moved to Ann Arbor, MI, where I lived for five years while attending the University of Michigan. While at U of M, I held a position as an undergraduate assistant for the football team while earning my BS in Physical Education. I graduated from U of M in the spring of 2008. Shortly thereafter, I was hired to work at CC. I subsequently moved to Novi, and have lived there for six years. On June 29, 2013, I married Elizabeth Mach (née Rembacki; Mercy class of 2004) in a ceremony that was held in the chapel here at CC with Fr. Dennis Kauffman, C.S.B. officiating. Liz and I currently reside in Livonia, and are members of St. Colette Parish. Liz is currently teaching kindergarten at Our Lady of Victory School in Northville. In my free time (should I have any) I can be found working out in the CC weight room, taking in a concert at DTE Energy Music Theatre, riding the hills of Mount Brighton on my snowboard, or enjoying the great outdoors in northern Michigan.

AARON M. BABICZ – 1993 I graduated from CC in 1993. I began my career at CC as the Director of Admissions from the fall of 2006 to the spring of 2009. Once I heard that Bob Santello was retiring I knew that I wanted to take another step in my Shamrock career and become our next Athletic Director, which has been my current role since the fall of 2009. I also moderate the Monogram Club along with Mike Carrier ’06. I am married to my beautiful bride Lauren, with a future Shamrock named Brooks Babicz, who was born in October 2015. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hillsdale College in the spring of 1998 where I also played football and served as team captain in 1997. I began coaching football at CC in 1998 while working as an Account Executive in the automotive industry. I had heard through the grapevine that Dan Collins ’84 was leaving the admissions job and knew that I had finally found my calling. I spoke to him on the phone for two hours and told him I was the man for the job. I think my classmates would be interested to know how little CC has changed over the years in regards to what we do here. Our faculty, staff, Basilian Fathers, and coaches are all committed to maintaining the same level of faithbased excellence we all loved and appreciated when we were here. We may have a new home here in Novi, but we will always be Detroit Catholic Central. Aside from being a husband and a father, there is nothing better than mentoring my CC brothers!

ROBERT WALLET – 2007 I graduated in 2007 and earned a bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems from Madonna University in Livonia, MI. I actually became aware of the availability of my current position at CC through the Career Services resources at Madonna. I was very excited about the possibility to work at my alma mater, and Madonna was very supportive through the process of my inquiring about this opportunity. I started working at CC in January 2014, as a computer technician. My day-to-day responsibilities include assisting staff and students with technology issues they may have and providing support for school computers and multimedia devices. Other interactions include helping with setup for presentations and meetings and installing new equipment. I have greatly enjoyed my time being back at CC and have learned a lot working with Director of Technology, Michael Kubus. I am extremely grateful for the chance to give back to the school that has given me so much and look forward to seeing what the future holds for CC.

MIKE CARRIER – 2006 I graduated from Catholic Central in 2006. After high school, I attended Eastern Michigan University and graduated in May 2010 with a degree in Social Studies and aspirations of one day becoming a teacher. Throughout my college years, beginning in May 2007, I began working as a summer intern in the CC Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations. That summer internship slowly turned into a part-time job over the next couple years. In July 2010, CC’s President at the time, Fr. Richard Ranalletti, C.S.B., offered me a full-time job as the Director of Alumni Relations. Even though I had planned on becoming a teacher, I was comfortable in the Advancement Office and gladly accepted the position. I continued to work in the Office of Advancement for the next four years. In the spring of 2014, I was offered the opportunity of a lifetime to become the Director of Student Activities. I was thrilled and honored to accept such a position! I maintain a close relationship with both Mrs. Janice Sharkey and Mrs. Amy Nanni under whose leadership I served the Student Council as a student. The chance to leave the office and work with the students at CC has proven to be the greatest gift. In addition to working in the school full time, I have also had the pleasure of being an assistant coach on the Freshman Football team since the fall of 2008 and an assistant coach in the wrestling program since the 2007-08 season. Furthermore, I have served as the Assistant Athletic Director for the past two years. I truly feel blessed to be able to work at my alma mater and have what I believe to be the greatest job in the world! It is a joy to work alongside so many colleagues, students, and families who believe in the values of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.

JAKE MARMUL – 2007 I graduated in 2007. I am the Director of Admissions and Public Relations / Marketing. I am recently engaged and will be married in June of 2016. I went to Notre Dame for college where I graduated with a BA in Sociology and Psychology. I worked at Quicken Loans right out of college. I left QL to return to Notre Dame as an assistant coach on the women’s lacrosse team. At the end of my first season I returned to the Detroit area, where I served as the Outreach Coordinator for Tour de Troit, which is a nonprofit that organizes the largest bicycle ride in the state. I then moved on to the University of Detroit Mercy as an assistant on the women’s lacrosse team where I served for a full season before finding out that CC was going to be in need of a new Director of Admissions. Then I came running! Dan Waterstradt ‘04 was the Director of Admissions before me, and he called to let me know there would be an opening. I immediately went into my head coach’s office and told her that she should start looking for another assistant because I was going to do whatever I could to become the next Director of Admissions at CC. I started in June 2014 and worked with Dan for that last month, and then took over in July 2014. I work at a Catholic school! In all actuality work takes up a very large amount of time, but I will be helping out as an assistant coach on the JV Lacrosse Team in 2016, so that will allow me to do some work directly with the students who are enrolled at CC. I’m very much looking forward to getting my coaching whistle back out! I also play in the alumni basketball and softball leagues here on campus, which are an absolute blast! If you’re involved in any rec league activities I strongly recommend looking at the two alumni leagues. New blood is always a welcome!

NICHOLAS J. FUGEDI – 2003 I teach Intro to Art and Ceramics at CC. I also assist in moderating Art Club and Guitar Club. Since graduating from CC, I went on to get my Bachelors in Art Education from Western Michigan University. After graduation I decided to take some time off to travel, during which I lived in Hawaii for a year and back-packed through Costa Rica. My first teaching position was at West Village Academy in Dearborn teaching Middle School Art. In 2011, I was hired on at Catholic Central to replace Mrs. Beaudoin as the ceramics teacher. This will be my fourth year teaching at CC and I love working at my alma mater. Since being hired at CC, I married my beautiful wife Alex, and we have been blessed with our daughter Ava. In my free time I play music on the weekends and do volunteer work at my church.

TIM BURKE – 1986 I am a proud member of the Class of 1986. Since graduating, I attended Hillsdale College and the University of Dayton, earned my BA degree, played college baseball, was a prospect and scout with the Cincinnati Reds, and have worked for a number of wonderful organizations. From December 2003 to May 2010, I was fortunate to come home to CC and join the Advancement Office in the role of Director of Alumni Relations and Development. As of March 2016, I am grateful for the opportunity to return home to CC. You learn as a young man at CC that “Teach Me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge” is more than six words in a motto on a crest; rather, it’s a way of life that you are expected to live and share with others. For those who participate, the CC experience and rewards can be great. At Catholic Central, the positive impact that you can make in people’s lives by your words and actions are life-long impressions. I have been happily married for 15 years to my lovely wife, Mary. We have three beautiful children: Jayne, 11, Timmy (class of 2026), 8, and Elizabeth, 5. We are active in our parish and school, Sacred Heart in Dearborn. ALUMNI RETURN TO SERVE • SPRING 2016

We were informed that this is the first time since the 1972-73 school year, that the top positions of the administration are filled by alumni. In 1972-73 it was Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46, Principal, Fr. William Stoba, C.S.B. ’38, Assistant Principal, and Mr. Dennis Tymoczko ’58, Dean of Students and Athletic Director. This year it is Fr. Dennis Noelke, C.S.B. ’71, Principal, Mr. David Lewis ’79, Assistant Principal, Mr. Mitch Hancock ’00, Dean of Students, and Mr. Aaron Babicz ‘93, Athletic Director. FR. DENNIS NOELKE, C.S.B. – 1971

DAVE LEWIS – 1979

I graduated from CC in 1971. After a year at Eastern Michigan, I transferred to what was then Mercy College of Detroit. I graduated from Mercy in 1975 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Math and teacher certification. I professed vows with the Basilian Fathers in August 1976 and was ordained on May 9, 1981.

After graduating from Catholic Central, I earned a BA degree in Secondary Education as well as an MA degree in School Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. I have been married for the last 26 years to my wife, Paula. We have two wonderful children, Patrick, a 2009 graduate of CC, and Anna, a 2015 graduate of Ladywood High School.

In the 35 years since ordination, I have served as a university chaplain in Houston and Windsor. I was Director of Vocations for the congregation, I taught at Aquinas Institute, Rochester, NY, Holy Redeemer, Detroit, and at CC the fall of 2006. I also served as Principal at Aquinas and Holy Redeemer. In January 2007, I was asked to serve in a congregational role as the Secretary/ Treasurer General, a role in which I served for five and a half years. Having never served full-time as a parish priest, in July 2012 I returned to Rochester, NY, and began serving as parochial vicar (associate pastor) of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish. I was very happy to have that experience which was very different after having spent most of my years as a priest in some educationrelated position. When the position of Principal came open as a result of Father John Huber becoming President of Catholic Central, I was encouraged to apply. I must admit that while I always hoped I would return to CC following my brief stay in 2006, I never anticipated that it would be in the role of principal. I am very grateful for the opportunity to have this position. I know that I stand on the shoulders of the 19 principals who preceded me. As I have said often to various groups, I intend to do all I am able to continue the nearly 90-year-old tradition of teaching Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge, to ensure that CC is the premier Catholic high school in the State of Michigan.

I have spent my entire professional career in parochial education. For the last 22 years, I have worked at Catholic Central, serving as Assistant Principal for the last 21 years. I have had the privilege of coaching both Football and Lacrosse during my tenure and have had the opportunity to work with thousands of great young men and their families.

MITCH HANCOCK – 2000 I graduated in 2000 and returned to CC in the fall of 2006 after graduating from Central Michigan University with a Secondary Education degree in Business Education and Marketing. Upon returning to CC, I taught Business Education courses (Accounting, Introduction to Business, Business Law) and Physical Education courses along with Health classes. I assisted the legendary coach Mike Rodriguez for one season before taking over the wrestling program as Head Coach in 2007. I was appointed Dean of Students in the fall of 2013 and remain in that office today. While serving Catholic Central as Dean of Students, I oversee attendance, discipline, classroom management, and all emergency management plans. Also, I head the Medical Emergency Response Team (M.E.R.T) at CC, a team that was created in 2014 to serve any possible cardiac or medical emergency. I am entering my ninth year as the head of the Shamrock wrestling program. During that time, the Shamrocks have reached the Division 1 State Finals five of the last seven years, winning titles in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and finishing runner-up in 2011. My wife, Allie, and I reside in Royal Oak and are active members of the St. Mary’s parish. We now have three children, Kinsley Ellen, Teague Michael, and Mia Grace.

FR. RICHARD ELMER, C.S.B. – 1946 After my Catholic Central High School graduation in 1946, and one year of studies at Assumption College in Windsor, Ontario, I entered the Basilian Fathers’ Novitiate, and took my first vows in 1948. I graduated from the University of Toronto in 1952 and spent two years teaching at CC. I then studied theology in Toronto and was ordained to the priesthood in 1957. After my ordination I taught English one year at Assumption High School in Windsor. I was then assigned to Catholic Central in 1960. In 1978, I received permission to become Director of the National Catholic Educational Association’s Annual Convention Exposition and Religious Education Congress out of Washington, DC. Then, in 1986, I was sent to the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, to become Dean of Student Services. Three and a half years later, I received a phone call from Fr. Joseph Moffatt, C.S.B. ’51, then-Principal at CC, inviting me to return to my alma mater as Director of Development & Alumni Relations. George Turek ’66 was very influential in making that phone call happen. I returned to CC in 1990 and have been here ever since. During the years from 1952 to the present, when I was at CC, I served as teacher, Director of Guidance, Director of Athletics, Director of Development & Alumni Relations, Principal, Chairman of the School Board of Directors, President, and finally as President Emeritus. It’s been a great ride, and I’m not yet ready to end it. I’ll leave that up to Almighty God, and the CC School Board.

RUDY SEICHTER – 1959 As a member of the Gabriel Richard Club, Student Council, and the 1959 State Hockey Championship Team, I graduated with the great CC Class of ’59. I owe a great deal to the Basilian Fathers, especially Fr. Enright, for the example they set for me and many CC men. Fr. Enright married my wife and me 51 years ago. We have two wonderful children, Karl and Anne; two grandchildren, Braden and Grace; and a loving extended family. I hold degrees from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and Wayne State University. My 40-year business career was in the computer and software application development and business arena, spending the first twelve years at IBM in the banking and insurance industries Major Accounts Division; twelve years in VP/GM/SVP positions in the Automotive and Networking Divisions of ADP; five years as VP/GM of the National Accounts Division and CEO/President of the Powersports Division of Bell and Howell; as Officer/Principal at Creative Solutions, Inc.; and my final four years consulting to software development companies. In 2007, Rosemary encouraged me to remain active by getting involved with CC. At the request of Fr. Elmer, I began and continue to spend two to three days per week within the Advancement Office as Director of Planned Giving, encouraging CC alumni, CC faculty and staff, and friends of the school to include CC in their estate/legacy planning in order to assure future young men the same opportunity we had to attend, teach, or be a part of this great institution.

DAN COLLINS – 1984 I was born to serve CC. The proud son of Dan Collins Sr. ’57, I was born with CC Royal Blue blood. I worshiped the Shamrocks from the earliest moments I can remember. All I ever wanted to do was follow in my father’s footsteps and go to CC. I graduated in 1984 and completed my education at Adrian College in 1988. My first career was in Health Care Marketing Administration with the Henry Ford Health System. My life changed when I received an unexpected call from Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 in 2002 asking me to consider coming back to CC to help with the Live & Die for CC High Capital Campaign. How do you say no to Fr. Elmer? I believed it was God calling me home, to serve my alma mater, and I gratefully accepted the opportunity. I am the proud husband of Mary (my high school sweetheart) and father of two Shamrock sons – Patrick ’12 and Daniel ’14, and it has been an unbelievable privilege to serve CC since 2002, the past 10 years as Director of Advancement. SHAUN SOVA – 2009 I am a graduate from the Class of 2009, the first to spend all four years in the “new” building in Novi. After graduating, I attended Western Michigan University, where I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations while working two part-time jobs, one in WMU’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations as an Annual Giving Intern, the other at a before/ after school daycare center for 6-12 year olds in Kalamazoo as a supervisor. About a month before I was to graduate from WMU, there was a job opening at CC in the Advancement Office that I immediately recognized to be a perfect fit for me. I applied, interviewed, and eventually was fortunate enough to be offered the position. I can remember accepting the position, finishing my graduation preparations, packing my entire apartment into the back of my car and driving straight to CC’s Alumni Dinner in 2013 to begin my professional career. At CC, I spend my time finding creative ways to improve the mission of the school through our incredible alumni and family members. This is usually realized through fundraising efforts for specific needs within the school (scholarships, tuition assistance, building improvements, etc.). I believe that while CC is in many ways the best place for a young man to spend his formative years, we can always find ways to improve and grow. The Advancement Office exists to meet those needs. Mr. Baker’s AP Biology Students Present to the Wildflower Association of Michigan On Monday, March 7, 2016, a select group of students from Mr. Baker’s AP Biology classes presented the results of their transpiration and stomate density lab to the Wildflower Association of Michigan’s (WAM) 29th annual conference held in East Lansing. The students modified a typical science lab exercise to create an experiment that is able to generate reproducible data using plants native to Michigan. The talk was titled “Zooming in through the roots, zooming out through the stomates: the path water takes through plants.” Approximately 200 native plant enthusiasts attended and were greatly impressed by our young men: Brendan Charette ’16, David Connolly ’16, Justin Reinhold ’16, Michael Stein ’16, Kareem Arafat ’16, Fouad Alzaroui ’16, Matt Turton ’16, and Connor Gibaratz ’17. Kareem Arafat and Fouad Alzaroui, who were so intrigued by their initial findings, also devised an elegantly simple experiment and collected data at home during winter break, which they presented at the conference. They wanted to see if they could increase the number of stomata on leaves by exposing plants to grow lights 24/7 versus only exposing another plant to light for eight hours a day.

They also won the Rookie Inspiration Award and received a recognition award from an opponent for their efforts. Catholic Central’s Robotics team has continued to grow over the past few years. In the past, CC has competed in VEX Robotics, a competition involving the design and construction of a robot to compete against other designs in a game such as basketball.

In addition, the FIRST Robotics team qualified for the Michigan State Tournament as well as the National Tournament, which they competed in April 27-30. Although they did not qualify for the National Championship game, they gained extremely valuable experience and look forward to returning next year. Here is a video of the elimination rounds of the tournament. You can see our final match at 4:11:00.

This year, CC entered a team in FIRST Robotics, a more rigorous and challenging competition, for the first time. As a rookie team, the “Shambots” won their first tournament, which is virtually unheard-of for a first year team.
