A Message from the

President

Dear Alumni and Friends of Catholic Central, It was so good to see so many of you at the beginning of our 90/90 celebration on May 12th as we celebrated the 90th birthday of Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 and officially began the celebration of CC’s 90th anniversary. Every time I plunge into the legacy of our beloved school, I am both impressed and humbled at the same time. In our Advancement Office, we have a set of yearbooks that go back as far as 1937. Ed Turek ’85 will tell you I often walk into his office to look something up in a particular yearbook as all of them are stored there. Of course, in addition to finding what I am looking for, I usually end up turning the pages to see which Basilians were serving during that particular year, checking out the clothing and hairstyles of the students during that era, and noticing all sorts of other activities. What catches my attention more than anything are the smiles on the faces of students and staff. After retiring as principal of Livonia Stevenson High School, Jim Gibbons ’68, a cousin of our principal Fr. Dennis Noelke, C.S.B. ’71, has been volunteering in our office a couple of days a week. It is absolutely amazing what Jim has done with our archives room: he has transformed a chaotic room of clutter into a well-organized, neat, and clearly labeled CC archive room. Occasionally, Jim will come out to show us an interesting artifact he has uncovered. The more we see, the more we are exposed to the glorious 90 years of Detroit Catholic Central High School. Indeed the Lord has blessed CC as a community of followers of Jesus Christ dedicated to the mission of Catholic secondary education in the tradition of the Basilian Fathers. Rather than sit back and pat ourselves on the back as we remember our noble history, let us take the memories and nostalgia of these nine past decades as a challenge and a call to dedicate ourselves to the future. Every year we are blessed to educate over a thousand fine young men in the Basilian charisms of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge (Psalm 119). Today’s young men face challenges that many of us would have found overwhelming when we were their age. The unhealthy forces within our culture: relativism, indifference to Christianity, selfishness, and self-interest over social justice and concern for all of God’s people without exception, a political situation in our country which questions so many of our basic values, increased academic pressure to meet college acceptance requirements, the temptation of substance abuse, and the increasing rates of depression and mental illness in the lives of teens present challenges that must seem insurmountable at times. I truly believe that aspects of 90 years of Catholic Central provide a pathway to the future for the young men we love and to whom we dedicate ourselves. A caring and loving environment which acknowledges and celebrates the Gospel of Jesus Christ, with the support of the Basilian Fathers, faculty, staff, alumni, and families are more important than ever. As we celebrate 90 very blessed years, will you join us in dedicating time, resources, heart, and soul into the sacred mission of Catholic Central so that we may continue to be faithful to God’s call to serve the young men He sends to us?

Fr. John B. Huber, C.S.B., Ed.D. President 2

Fellow Shamrocks, “We shape our buildings and thereafter they shape us.” – Winston Churchill We recently lost one of our great alumni, John Argenta ’58, who passed away on May 27, 2018. John was a very successful and well-respected architect, and one of his greatest contributions was being the designer of CC’s current location in Novi. His passing made me think about all of the various buildings that have housed CC over the years (Harper, Belmont, Outer Drive, and Breakfast Drive). While our school is a product of the students, teachers, priests, and coaches who have passed through its halls, the buildings and grounds themselves also hold memories and secrets (who really was the mad bowler?) and are an integral part of our experience as Shamrocks. John spent his CC years at 6565 West Outer Drive, the iconic west Detroit location. Three stories tall plus a basement holding the boxing ring and a “weight room” consisting of one barbell and a few weights, CC’s home from 1951-1978 was an institution in its neighborhood. The property also contained the Basilian residence adjacent to the school, so that the many priests who taught at the school were fully immersed into the school around the clock. In fact, the beautiful 10-foot-tall stained glass display in the current chapel was part of the Basilian residence and school chapel on West Outer Drive. At one point in 1978, this stained-glass artwork was about to be thrown out by City of Detroit demolition contractors. Luckily, Jerry Belian ’58 learned about its impending doom and recruited a classmate of his to help him rescue the artifact and keep it stored for 27 years until the Wixom Road school was built. That helper was none other than John Argenta, a young architect at the time, who loved CC and appreciated the artistic and historic value of the stained-glass artwork. Going from beauty to the beast, CC’s next stop was at 14200 Breakfast Drive in Redford. This was an old middle school when CC bought it in the late 1970’s and was no architectural gem. But its simple structure and aesthetics were a good metaphor for the hard-working mentality that motivated so many students to achieve much in the classroom and on the athletic fields. While our wealthier rivals to the north would chant “Where is Redford?” during games, we would roll up our sleeves, kick their tails, and show them. Some of the success and grit of our students and teams were shaped by the modest surroundings, as the lacrosse and football teams practiced on the crater filled mud pit adjacent to the school, while the wrestling team honed their toughness dodging broken glass and ornery drivers during their runs along the I-96 service drive. The current location at 27225 Wixom Road in Novi is far different from any of CC’s prior homes. A beautiful, modern building housed on 113 acres of trees and wetlands, John Argenta’s vision and passion are apparent from the moment you first arrive on campus. The school is designed to meet the modern needs of not just students and faculty, but all parts of the CC family, and there is activity somewhere on the school grounds year-round. Importantly, spirituality was as much a part of the design as were academics or athletics. The grounds contain multiple grottos with statues and space for reflection, and in the center of it all, as you enter the main school doors, there is a simple, humble chapel housing the stained glass depiction of Jesus admired by so many, and saved through the pluck of a couple of alumni 40 years ago. Thank you to all CC alumni and family who have donated to help build this permanent, final, and inspiring home of CC, and thank you, John Argenta, for a life well-lived and for giving Catholic Central a home that so appropriately nourishes the mind, body, and spirit of our CC community. WE ARE CC!

2018 Upcoming Class Reunions Legacy Reunion Mass and Luncheon The annual Catholic Central Legacy Reunion Mass and Luncheon was held at CC on June 14, 2018. This fantastic gathering is held in conjunction with the Feast of St. Basil, and includes all of the classes that were 50 or more years removed from their CC graduation (19291968). This comprises alumni from our first three school buildings on Harper Avenue, Belmont Avenue, and Outer Drive. Over 160 alumni and their guests were in attendance for Mass and lunch. Mass was celebrated in the CC Chapel by CC President Emeritus Fr. Dick Elmer, C.S.B. ’46. CC President, Fr. John Huber, C.S.B. gave a wonderful homily, concelebrating the Mass along with Deacon Pat McDonald ’54. A special thank you to Fr. John Wheeler, C.S.B. ’57 and the entire Alumni Glee Club for leading us in song during Mass.

The Catholic Central Alumni Glee Club (CCAGC): Making an impact at CC and open to all Alumni by Jack Rajkovich ’67 (member of the CCAGC) The years following our return found us enjoying the renewed camaraderie, while rehearsing and singing at selected engagements along the way. The years advanced, Bob Schikora became Fr. Bob Schikora. His new assignments took Fr. Bob away from Catholic Central, but in a relative short time, Fr. John Wheeler, C.S.B. ’57, with valued assistance along the way, first from Dennis Antoniotti ’68, followed by Rick Brown ’67, picked up the ball and brought us into a vocal arena of respectability. With art imitating life, we have had some bumps along the way, losing brothers who contributed to the betterment of Catholic Central and the Catholic Central Alumni Glee Club, including Jim Zapton ’65, Jerry Di Ponio ’65, Lou Brohl (honorary member of the CC Alumni Association), and extended family. Members of the CCAGC have included singers from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s. All Alumni are welcome. It’s hard to imagine that a number of kids sitting in the bowels of 6565 West Outer Drive over 50 years ago, singing under the direction of Frs. Paul and Ned Donoher, C.S.B., would still be together in 2018. The phrase “Glory Days” may be used too often in some circles, but in Catholic Central’s history of vocal music, these epitomized “Glory Days.” After a hiatus of some years, Bob Schikora ’65, invited a number of the old gang to regroup. Here we were again. No longer in the basement of our Detroit Catholic Central, but still in the midst of our former classmates and fellow singers. The tenors strained a bit to hit the high notes, while the basses, graced with age, grooved into the lower register with relative ease.

While some are paying attention to the Reunion Tours of the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and others, the Catholic Central Alumni Glee Club has been on its own Reunion Tour, and with God’s grace and good fortune, we may be around a bit longer… All Alumni are welcome to join the Catholic Central Alumni Glee Club. Regardless of actual or perceived singing talent, all alumni are encouraged to join the CCAGC. The impact of the group at CC events and beyond is priceless. Please join today. 30th Annual Alumni Association Dinner and

All Classes Reunion

Over 200 alumni and guests gathered at Laurel Manor Banquet Center on Thursday, April 26, 2018, for the 30th Annual Alumni Association Dinner and All Classes Reunion. The dinner is sponsored by the Catholic Central Alumni Association and recognizes alumni and Basilian Fathers who have done much to carry on CC’s motto by living the virtues of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. The recipients of the Fr. Canning F. Harrison, C.S.B. Distinguished Alumnus Award bring honor and distinction to Detroit Catholic Central High School. The 2018 honoree was Mr. Stanley J. Targosz, Jr. ’67. This year, the Alumni Association recognized Mr. Nicholas C. Kristock ’09 as a CC Rising Star for his contributions and service to others and the community. Both of these CC Men represent Mary, Alma Mater with humility and grace. Thank you to all the alumni, students, staff, and friends of CC who help make this event a successful and fun evening of CC camaraderie. A special thank you to Chad Miles ’12 (Adventum Digital Media) and Roy Wilson ’66 (Remerica United Realty) for producing and sponsoring the evening video presentations. Stan Targosz, Jr. ’67 Fifty years since graduating from Detroit Catholic Central High School on 6565 West Outer Drive, Stan Targosz, Jr. remains a faithful and loyal son to his Alma Mater. God has been kind to Stan, blessing him with his lovely wife, Mary, daughter, Lori, sons, Stan III ’92, and Adam ’93, and loving grandchildren. Stan has maintained long lasting friendships with his Catholic Central extended family while serving in many positions over the years, including Alumni Board President (20112012). His successful business ventures have given him the capacity to share his good fortune as a benefactor to Catholic Central High School. Some of Stan’s business accomplishments are those of a commercial/residential realtor, owner and CEO of SEMCO Inc., design and engineer material handling equipment for auto industry, and owner and CEO of Global Plastics Recovery, Inc., patent holder of the only certified and EPA approved process worldwide to remove coatings and plastics that does not degrade the original material, allowing it to be used for its original intent. The fifty years since graduating from Detroit Catholic Central High School have been both rewarding and full of adventure for Stan Targosz, Jr. For those who know Stan, he hasn’t changed that much. He continues to be a humble man in God’s service.

Nicholas Kristock ’09 Nicholas Kristock is a 2009 graduate of Detroit Catholic Central. During his days at CC, Nicholas was very active with Student Council, soccer, and living the CC Experience. After graduating from CC, Nicholas moved on to Oakland University, excelling in the classroom and on the soccer field. He is a former international professional soccer player turned serial entrepreneur and servant leader. He has founded three non-profit organizations dating back to 2012. He serves as the Executive Director of Fleece & Thank You, founded in 2015. Fleece & Thank You is an innovative 501(c)3 organization that provides hope and comfort to children battling illness by giving donors the unique opportunity to make a fleece blanket and video message of support. In 2016, he founded the technology startup Mahalo, a donor cultivation platform for organizations to re-engage donor bases. Continuing with his obsession of starting social-impact ventures, something interesting about Nicholas is that he lived homeless for a week in Sydney, Australia, and was a member of the startup team for Orange Sky Laundry, the world’s first mobile laundry service for the homeless. Nicholas currently lives in Novi, Michigan and runs his two businesses there. The 31st Annual Alumni Association Dinner and All Classes Reunion will be held on Thursday, May, 2, 2019. This year, the Fr. Canning F. Harrison, C.S.B. Distinguished Alumnus Award will have two very deserving recipients, Mr. Robert E. Barnes, Sr. ’56 and The Honorable Robert J. Colombo, Jr. ’68. More information to follow on the CC Website, via social media, and in the Winter Aluminator Magazine.

Give Detroit Catholic Central $90 In Celebration of CC’s 90th Anniversary During Catholic Central High School’s first 90 years we have been guided in “Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.” It is our prayer that CC continue that mission for another 90 years, and beyond. We are doing all that we can to make the CC experience accessible to as many deserving students as possible, while also continuing to advance the relevance of a CC education, but often our “best” is not good enough. The purpose of the Spirit of CC Annual Fund is to support that “just not good enough.” In recognition of our 90th Anniversary, all alumni, family & friends are being asked to consider $90 when discerning their investment this year. If you have never invested, or have invested less than $90, will you honor our 90 years with a gift of $90? If you have invested in the past, or perhaps you do so every year, will you honor our 90 years by increasing your gift by $90? Your $90 will have the most profound impact on CC today, tomorrow, and forever!

Spirit of CC Annual Fund: Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge

Invest in Mary, Alma Mater – Today, Tomorrow, Forever

Invest in the form of a Recurring Gift Last year, we were proud to introduce to you the opportunity to invest in CC in the form of a recurring gift. Soon you will be receiving your new Spirit of CC Annual Fund Gift Form. You may use that form to indicate your desire to make a recurring gift. You may also setup that gift yourself on the giving page of the CC website: https://catholiccentral.myschoolapp.com/page/giving/ donate-online?siteId=1178&ssl=1. What does $90 look like in the form of a recurring gift? $90 annual investment = $ 7.50 / month $190 annual investment = $ 15.83 / month $290 annual investment = $ 24.16 / month

LEGACY SOCIETY Three Easy Tax Deduction Opportunities for CC Contributors In my last Aluminator article, we examined a new feature in the recent Federal tax law; i.e., the ability to now contribute to private elementary/high school tuition, up to $10,000 per year, tax free, from one’s 529 Plan. As you know, contributing from one’s 529 was previously limited to college tuition and expenses. Many of us contend that a solid elementary/high school education is far more important in the formation of a young person than college. What better use of your 529 funds could there be than to have your son/grandson attend CC? For those of us who are 70-1/2 or older and do not itemize on our tax return, here is another option for contributing to CC. Rather than writing a check or charging it on your credit card, how about taking funds from your IRA and reduce your taxes as part of your contribution? Submitting the donation from your IRA directly to CC (contact your IRA administrator to do this properly) reduces your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) by the amount donated. Donating all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) gives the same advantage. By the way, you can donate up to $100,000 annually in this manner from your IRA. So, if you are 70 -1/2 or older, think about using your IRA as a means to make your annual donation(s) to CC. A third opportunity lies with your Appreciated Stock. It may be the best tax advantaged vehicle for your CC contributions. With the recent increase in the value of many stocks and the volatility of the market, perhaps one is thinking of taking some profits? If so, what better way to meet one’s charitable obligations? Donating appreciated stock gives a potential DOUBLE Tax Benefit: no tax on the appreciation of the stock sold, PLUS, if one itemizes, a charitable tax deduction for the full current market value of the donated stock. So, review your current portfolio for appreciated stock you have been thinking of selling. Consider donating it to CC. As always, before donating, meet with your tax/financial advisor(s) to determine the best tax advantaged method of donating to Catholic Central from your portfolio. In closing, let me appeal to those who have not contributed to CC in some time or never at all. The annual finances required to run this amazing institution are beyond what you and I could imagine during our days at CC. Health care premiums for faculty and staff are increasing dramatically each year. Tuition is nearing $13,000 per year! I am not raising an alarm, but it is important that all of us recognize the need and, may I humbly say, we all have an obligation to give back. What better return on our investment is there than making sure over a thousand young men every year are given the opportunity we had to get a CC education? You can help the current young men of CC by contributing to the Annual Fund and 90/90 campaign. You can help the future young men of CC by including CC in your estate/legacy plans. Please call or email me to discuss the numerous ways these tax benefits can help both CC and you in the short and long term. God Bless!

n May 1928, Monsignor Van Antwerp, the Vicar-General

of the Diocese of Detroit and pastor of Holy Rosary Church on Woodward Avenue, made known his plan to convert his parochial high school on Harper Avenue near Woodward into a boys high school. He requested the Basilian Fathers to take over the management of the school and to staff it.

The school remained on Harper Avenue until 1934. During the last two years that the school was located on that site, the Basilians agreed to take charge of Holy Name Institute as well. This latter school was located in the parish church of the Cathedral of Blessed Harper Avenue 1928-1934

By 1937, the demand for admission to Catholic Central became so great that the facility had to be altered. In desperation, that section of the building which had been erected as a gymnasium three years before, was converted into seven additional classrooms. During the next three years, the enrollment continued to grow until the building was again crowded. As the school grew in size and its program expanded, it became evident that a new site for Catholic Central had to be found.

The Administration looked to the northwest section of Detroit since a great number of students came from that area. On October 1, 1943, a seventeen acre Outer Drive 1951-1978

tract of land on the corner of Hubbell and West Outer Drive was purchased for

the future facility. It would take another seven years before the decision to build on the new site was agreed upon.

Catholic Central High School, at the famous 6565 West Outer Drive address, opened on September 17, 1951, with the first phase of its building plans completed. The new facility housed more than 800 students. Within ten years, Fr. Wilfrid Kehoe, the Principal in 1961, was able to complete the facility as it had been planned. There Catholic Central remained until 1978.

Fr. James Howard, C.S.B. instructs English at W. Outer Drive In early 1978, the Detroit Public School system was greatly in need of a facility to expand its operation in northwest Detroit. It prevailed upon the Basilian Fathers to consider relocating Catholic Central. That same year, Catholic Central moved to its fourth location in Redford Township, to meet the increasing demand for admissions. It leased from the Redford School Breakfast Drive 1978-2005

District an empty middle

school which had been named in honor of General

Leaving that location with less than 900 students, the present school on Wixom Road in Novi was opened on August 15, 2005. The 60-acre campus and the striking new edifice were the result of visionary leadership and generous donations by alumni and friends of CC. As Catholic Central celebrates its 90th Anniversary, and 14th year in Novi, the school and campus continue to flourish. Enrollment remains over 1,000 students, the campus has grown to 113 acres, eight Basilian Fathers remain on staff, and Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge are at the forefront, and Jesus Christ is the reason for Catholic Central.

George C. Marshall. Adapting a middle school to the needs of a senior high school was a challenge. However, that challenge was met and school opened that year on August 2, 1978 with an enrollment of 1,021 students. The “temporary” location in Redford lasted for 27 years. By 2005, the school-age population in the first ring of suburbs was dwindling and more than 80% of students were commuting from long distances west of Breakfast Drive.

The students learned how to write Chinese calligraphy and do paper-cutting first hand. After the Tea Ceremony, they all became tea experts. All were eye-opening, first-time-ever experiences for the students. We then “bullet-trained” ourselves at a smooth 300 km/h to Xian, the real old city that had been the capital for 13 Dynasties. Needless to say, the Terracotta Warrior site is indeed the amazing 8th wonder of the world! You have to be there in person to understand that feeling.
