PRESIDENT’S LETTER

ear Alumni, Family, and Friends of Detroit Catholic Central High School,

As Catholic Central moves steadily toward our 100th anniversary in 2028, I find myself reflecting not only on where we have been, but on who we have been along the way.

In this special season leading up to our centennial, each issue of the Aluminator will highlight a chapter of our school’s physical journey, beginning in this issue with Harper Avenue, where Catholic Central first took root. Over the years, CC has called several locations home. Each campus carried its own character, challenges, and memories. Yet, no matter the address, the heart of Catholic Central has always been the same, formed by the students, educators, Basilian Fathers, alumni, parents, and friends who brought those spaces to life.

These pages are meant to serve as a testament not only to bricks and mortar, but to the relationships, traditions, and moments that define the Catholic Central experience. The classrooms, hallways, and fields may change, but the mission endures: to educate young men in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.

While we eagerly anticipate celebrating 100 remarkable years, we are equally focused on preparing Catholic Central for its next 100. That future depends on the continued love, generosity, and engagement of our alumni community. On the following pages you will find more information about our gift annuities program, our new Grotto project, and charitable giving. Please take a moment to read the information and prayerfully consider how you and your family can support the mission of Catholic Central.

We cannot do this work without you. Your belief in Catholic Central has carried us this far, and it will carry us forward. Together, we honor our past, celebrate our present, and build a future worthy of the Shamrocks who will follow in your footsteps. Our story is still being written.

The world truly is a better place with more Shamrocks in it.

With gratitude,

The classrooms, hallways, and fields may change, but the mission endures: to educate young men in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.

Secure Income for You. And a

Lasting Gift for Catholic Central.

Example: John Smith’s Charitable Gift Annuity

At age 65, John wanted to make a meaningful gift to Catholic Central without giving up his financial security, so John gifts an asset of his choosing.

He establishes a $100,000 Charitable Gift Annuity with a locked in 5.7% fixed rate for life

This provides him with:

$5,700 annual fixed income in guaranteed payments, paid quarterly for life

In addition, John qualified for an immediate charitable tax deduction and enjoys the peace of mind of dependable income for life.

If John lives to age 85, he will have received $114,000 in total income, while Catholic Central receives approximately $80,000 (varies based on present value) upon his passing to strengthen its endowment and help future generations of Shamrocks.

atholic Central alumni who are considering charitable gifts may wish to evaluate tax-efficient ways to support their alma mater. For retirees with qualified retirement accounts like pre-tax IRAs, Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) must begin at age 73 or 75, depending on birth year, even if the funds are not needed for living expenses. RMDs are typically treated as taxable income when distributed, which can increase tax brackets and Medicare premiums. Charitably inclined individuals may donate their excess distribution funds once they reach their bank account, but there may be a more tax-efficient alternative to consider. One sometimes-overlooked strategy is the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).

QCDs are direct transfers of pre-tax dollars from an IRA to a qualified charity. They are available to individuals age 70 1/2 and older and can count toward annual required minimum distributions. The primary benefit of QCDs is twofold: the distributions are generally not included as taxable income, and they may increase the giving power of the donation by allowing gifts to be made with pre-tax rather than after-tax dollars. Additionally, by reducing adjusted gross income, they may help lower Medicare premiums and the taxation of Social Security benefits. In 2026, individuals can donate up to $111,000 per year through a QCD. For married couples who each have an IRA, each spouse can make a QCD, allowing for a combined total of up to $222,000. This strategy can be a powerful way to maximize a donor’s gift while potentially reducing taxable income.

Catholic Central is able to receive QCD gifts, which can be directed to scholarships and programs that support the next generation of Shamrocks. In some cases, this strategy may also be coordinated with other charitable planning techniques, such as charitable remainder trusts or charitable gift annuities. Alumni should consider speaking with their trusted financial advisor and tax professional to determine whether QCDs fit within their broader philanthropic and financial planning strategy. With thoughtful and coordinated planning, alumni and benefactors can make a meaningful impact at Catholic Central while making the most of their retirement resources.

The following information was gathered during research for our upcoming Images of America book celebrating CC’s 100th anniversary but was not able to fit. More details about the book will be shared in future issues of the Aluminator as we get closer to the release date.

In just a few short years, Catholic Central will celebrate its 100th anniversary, a milestone that invites both gratitude and reflection.

Over nearly a century, the school has grown in size, location, and influence. Yet from its earliest days to its present home in Novi, one thing has remained constant: the mission to form young men in the Basilian values of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.

As we look ahead to our centennial celebration, we also look back to the modest but historic building at 26 Harper Avenue in Detroit and the original staff whose leadership helped establish the foundation where the Shamrock legacy first took root.

THE FOUNDING OF CATHOLIC CENTRAL

Like many Catholic institutions founded in the early 20th century, Catholic Central began humbly.

In May of 1928, Monsignor John A. Van Antwerp, Vicar General of the Diocese of Detroit and pastor of Holy Rosary Church on Woodward Avenue,

REV. F.S. RUTH, CSB

Francis Sylvester Ruth, priest, was born in Hepworth, Ontario, on March 28, 1902. Father Ruth was a member of the first Basilian staff at two high schools: Aquinas Institute, Rochester, 1927-1928, and Catholic Central High School, 1928-1936. He was then transferred to Assumption College, Windsor.

Francis Leo Burns, priest, was born on August 23, 1905 in Detroit. He was one of the founding Basilians of Catholic Central, where he taught one year while also studying theology. He completed his theological studies at St. Basil’s Scholasticate, Toronto, while also earning his teacher certification at the Ontario College of Education.

He was ordained to the priesthood on December 19, 1931, in St. Basil’s Church, Toronto, by Bishop Alexander MacDonald. He taught at Catholic Central High School from 1932-1936, earning his teaching certificate for the state of Michigan in 1934.

Wilfred Clarence Sharpe, priest, middle brother of Fathers Joseph and Gerald Sharpe, was born on September 22, 1891, at Point Edward, Ontario.

When the Basilian general chapter of 1928 elected him to the general council, he took up residence at Catholic Central, he taught classics in addition to his council duties. In 1929, he moved to the curial house in Toronto.

Sainte Anne’s Parish, Detroit, he taught with the original Basilian group at Holy Name Institute, Detroit.

In 1932, Father Embser returned to Holy Name Institute (later Catholic Central HS), where he remained until 1946, teaching Latin and serving as second council (1935-1936) first councilor (1936-1940) and superior and principal of the school (1940-1946).

From 1946-1948, he was principal of St. Thomas High School, Houston, and first councilor of the Basilian community. He taught Latin at St. John Fisher College, Rochester, 1955-1962, and then returned

James William Embser, priest, was born May 5, 1905, in Hornell, New York. In 1925, he moved to Assumption College, Windsor. The next year, while living at

Joseph Stanley Murphy, priest, was born on June 4, 1904 in Woodslee, Ontario. ‘Stan’ taught for one year at Catholic Central, while also doing his first year of theological studies. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 19, 1931 in St. Basil’s Church, Toronto, by Bishop Alexander MacDonald.

Charles Patrick Donovan, priest, was born in Wellsville, New York, on March 17, 1892. Father Donovan’s 44-year teaching career began at St. Michael’s Assumption College School in September 1920. In 1928, he began a four year stint at Catholic Central High School in Detroit, before returning to Assumption College School, 1932-1936.

Born November 26, 1894, Reverend Edward Leonard Rush was born into a prominent Toronto family. Fr. Edward L. Rush entered the seminary despite his father’s objections and was ordained in 1923. After earning a master’s degree from Columbia University, he became one of the Basilian priests tasked with establishing Catholic Central in 1928.

MR. S. MURPHY, CSB REV. C.P. DONOVAN, CSB

THE END OF THE HARPER AVENUE ERA

In 1932, the Basilian Fathers assumed responsibility for Holy Name Institute, located at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament on Woodward Avenue. Leading two schools placed increasing demands on both personnel and facilities.

As enrollment grew and Catholic Central’s reputation spread across Detroit, it became clear that the Harper Avenue building could no longer sustain the school’s momentum. In 1934, the Basilians made the decision to relocate, closing the Harper Avenue chapter and beginning the next phase of Catholic Central’s journey.

Today, nearly a century later, alumni whose fathers and grandfathers once walked those early halls still speak with pride about Catholic Central’s beginnings. Their stories serve as living reminders that while buildings may change, the values instilled within them endure.

As Catholic Central prepares to celebrate 100 years, we honor 26 Harper Avenue and the original staff not simply as a location on a map, but as the birthplace of a legacy.

CELEBRATING TWO DECADES OF EXCELLENCE:

MITCH HANCOCK ’00 AND THE LEGACY OF CATHOLIC CENTRAL WRESTLING

During an all-school assembly on Monday, March 2, 2026, Catholic Central celebrated the varsity wrestling team’s fourth consecutive MHSAA Division 1 State Championship.

In a moment that highlighted the program’s continued success and its remarkable history, Head Varsity Wrestling Coach Mitch Hancock ’00 officially announced his retirement as Head Wrestling Coach as he prepares to step into his new role as Principal of Catholic Central for the 2026–2027 school year.

For two decades, Hancock’s leadership has defined an era of excellence for Catholic Central Wrestling. Since becoming head coach during the 2007–2008 season, he has guided the program through one of the most dominant stretches in Michigan high school wrestling history.

Hancock first joined the varsity coaching staff as an assistant in 2007 before taking over the following year. Over the past 19 seasons as head coach, he has built a program known for discipline, preparation, and sustained success at every level of competition. Under Hancock’s leadership, the Shamrocks have compiled an extraordinary 425–68 overall dual meet record, while capturing 19 Catholic High School League Championships, 19 District Championships, and 18 Regional Championships. His teams have also

secured 12 MHSAA Division 1 State Championships and finished as State Runner-Up three times, establishing Catholic Central as one of the premier wrestling programs in the state.

The program’s success has also been evident on the individual level. Since Hancock became head coach, Shamrock wrestlers have won 78 individual state championships and earned an additional 102 AllState finishes (Top 8) at the MHSAA Individual State Finals.

While the accolades and championships are impressive, those closest to Hancock say his impact reaches far beyond the scoreboard.

“Mitch Hancock is one of the finest Basilian educators we’ve had at Catholic Central. His passion and dedication to his faith, his wrestlers, and the greater Shamrock mission are unmatched. The growth I have seen in him as a human being, husband, and father has been more gratifying than any title we could ever win. I am honored to be a part of his journey as a colleague and friend.” — Aaron Babicz ’93

Former Shamrock standout Myles Amine ’15, who went on to achieve success at the collegiate and international level, including a bronze medal in the 2020 Olympic Games, echoed that sentiment while reflecting on Hancock’s lasting influence.

“Mitch Hancock shaped the way I compete and carry myself long after my time at Catholic Central. He’s the kind of person who makes everyone around him better, and I couldn’t think of anyone more deserving to step into the role of principal!” — Myles Amine ’15

Across Michigan’s wrestling community, Hancock has also earned a reputation for his ability to prepare athletes to perform at their best when it matters most.

“Mitch has it down to a science how he has these kids ready and peaked at the end of the year. It’s amazing, year in and year out, what he and the coaching staff does. He’s by far the most committed and dedicated coach in the state of Michigan.”

— Bob Moreau ’75, who coached alongside Mitch for 19 years and, by Mitch’s own account, made immeasurable contributions to the wrestling program

Assistant coach Mike Carrier ’06, who has worked alongside Hancock for years, says the opportunity to be part of the program under his leadership has been invaluable.

“Mitch is one of the greatest coaches, educators, and leaders I have ever been around. The

accomplishments of the wrestling program during his tenure are almost unbelievable. I am fortunate enough to have been able to witness everything firsthand. Being a part of his staff has been one of the greatest privileges of my career. I have learned so much about how to lead and challenge young men to work hard and achieve their goals.

Mitch’s ability to teach wrestling and lead his teams to great success are surpassed only by his ability to help his students and athletes grow in their faith and maturity.

While it is unfortunate his tenure as head coach is coming to an end, his overall impact on Catholic Central and all students will continue to grow in his new role as principal. Furthermore, the wrestling program’s foundation built by Coach Yeager, Coach Rod, and Coach Hancock will serve the program well moving forward. The Shamrocks aren’t going anywhere. As they say, ‘The standard is the standard.’ I can’t think of anyone better equipped to lead our school as the first lay principal.” — Mike Carrier ’06

Catholic Central thanks Coach Hancock for his decades of leadership in the wrestling program and is excited to see him continue his legacy at Catholic Central as principal!

CATHOLIC CENTRAL HOSTS

THIRD ANNUAL STATE OF THE SCHOOL

n Thursday, February 19, 2026, Catholic Central hosted the Third Annual State of the School in the Grand Hall of the George and Mary Turek Hall of Science.

The event featured speakers President Ed Turek ’85, Principal Father Patrick Fulton, CSB, keynote speaker Principal-Elect Mitch Hancock ’00, and Head Varsity Football Coach Justin Cessante ’99, who shared important updates as the school approaches our 100th anniversary.

Highlights included: FUNDRAISING TOTALS (AS OF FEBRUARY 19, 2026)*

*Numbers do NOT include DRIVE totals

President Turek shared plans for a new Grotto and discussed what’s next, including Mitch Hancock becoming CC’s first lay Principal while Fr. Fulton assumes a newly-created role as Vice President of Mission and Spirituality.

The momentum continues! As of March 1, we have more than 300 young men registered for the incoming class, and nearly $600,000 in need-based tuition assistance has already been awarded. Families are choosing Catholic Central in record numbers, and we are grateful for the trust.

We launched the Jr. Shamrock Magazine in August, and it has quickly become a cornerstone of how we stay connected with our K-8 families. The Jr. Shamrock program remains the best way for prospective families to stay engaged, receive early access to events, and prepare their sons for the admissions process.

In addition to fun updates, we use the magazine to start teaching aspects of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge early. Our March edition focuses on practical, character-building conversations at home:

INTEGRITY: Would you accept a lower grade on a test you forgot to study for, or cheat for a higher grade? Which one do you think your parents would prefer?

LEADERSHIP: When someone is teased at school/on the bus/on the playground do you join in, walk away, or step up?

RESPONSIBILITY: Do you rush out the door or take ownership of your morning, without mom/ dad constantly nagging you?

If your family hasn’t explored it yet, be sure to scan the QR code to read the latest edition and register for Jr. Shamrocks!

And don’t forget - Summer Camps are open! With more than 1,000 campers on campus each year, it’s one of the best ways for boys to experience the energy and brotherhood of Catholic Central firsthand. Thank you for your continued support. If you know a young man who belongs here, send him our way!

God bless, and go Shamrocks!

Students celebrated the Rite of Acceptance and Welcome at an all-school Mass in early December. They recently celebrated the Rite of Election in mid February at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral and will receive the Sacraments of Initiation during the Easter season.

CATHOLIC CENTRAL BAND INVITED

TO PERFORM IN 2027 LONDON NEW YEAR’S PARADE

During a special band assembly held February 23, 2026, the Catholic Central Marching Band was formally invited to perform in the 2027 London New Year’s Parade.

The invitation was extended in person by Bob Bone, founder and chair of some of Europe’s most prestigious turn-of-the-year traditions.

JOHN KIOUSIS ’26 ACHIEVES PERFECT ACT SCORE

Catholic Central is proud to recognize John Kiousis ’26 for earning a perfect score of 36 on the ACT, the highest possible composite score on the ACT test.

The Catholic Central Band also reached another exciting milestone on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the MSBOA Band Festival at Woodhaven High School, earning straight First Division ratings with all A scores from the judges for the first time in the school’s history.

GEORGE & MARY TUREK HALL OF SCIENCE

OF THE YEAR

The Construction Association of Michigan (CAM) has named Catholic Central’s George & Mary Turek Hall of Science as its 2025 Project of the Year.

The award was announced during CAM’s 140th Annual Meeting on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, at the Vibe Credit Union Showplace in Novi.

“The Hall of Science is a remarkable achievement that will shape how students learn, explore, and imagine their futures,” said CAM President Kevin Koehler. “It’s a powerful example of Michigan’s construction industry delivering projects with real, lasting impact.”

Now Serving Over 40 States!

Completing an undefeated championship season, Detroit Catholic Central captured the 2025 MHSAA Division 1 Football State Championship with a 42–19 victory over Cass Tech on Sunday, November 30 at Ford Field. The title marks the program’s first state championship since 2009 and a return to the top of Michigan high school football, as the Shamrocks finished the season ranked No. 4 in the Midwest and No. 14 nationally.

3/13 in Naples at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club 3/14 in Venice at Sharky’s on the Pier

Over 100 Shamrocks and guests experienced fantastic fellowship and CC camaraderie during this year’s Florida Reunions! The atmosphere, sunshine, food and hospitality was spectacular!

Thank you to Ken ‘60 and Valarie Dabrowski for hosting everyone on Friday, March 13 at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club in Naples; and to Mike ‘71 and Donna Pachota and their son, Justin, for hosting us on Saturday, March 14 at their restaurant, Sharky’s on the Pier in Venice.

A special thank you to Fr. Alex Pince from Epiphany Cathedral in Venice for leading us in a Lenten prayer service prior to our meal at Sharky’s. It was an impactful way to start the reunion gathering.

All CC alumni, family, and friends are welcome to join us in March 2027 for next year’s reunions!

Known for his creative and demanding French classes, where speaking English earned push-ups and high test averages were rewarded with watching French films or singing French songs. For many alumni, Fr. Wheeler fostered a deep love for the French language and culture. His remarkable memory for his students’ lives and accomplishments, paired with his ever-present warm smile, endeared him to generations of Shamrocks.

Fr. Wheeler played a pivotal role in the annual DRIVE fundraiser, personally selling thousands of tickets to alumni each year and ensuring that students who helped with the effort received financial aid or Basilian scholarships to attend the French exchange trip. Many students were able to enjoy life-changing experiences only because of his quiet generosity.

As one of the co-founders of the CC Ski team in 1971, Fr. Wheeler led the team to the top of the state’s elite competition during his 16 years as coach. Preparation included participation in summer race camps in Montana, intensive fall training, daily winter training on the slopes and weekend races throughout the state. Father’s teams were State runners-up three times and won two Regional and two League Championships. Father also co-founded the CC Soccer program in 1979 and served as moderator, bus driver, and chaplain to the Varsity, JV, and Freshmen soccer teams from 1979-1989.

Many alumni would also remember Fr. Wheeler’s passion for music. He served as the Director of the Alumni Glee Club and provided piano accompaniment for many masses on campus. He also encouraged many to join the Senior Alma Mater Choir while it was active at CC.

In loving memory of Charlie Siracusa, VP of Advancement, JV Tennis Coach, and Build a Better Business Club moderator.

Charlie was motivational, charismatic, and possessed the rare ability to speak to everyone as if they were the only person in the room. He will be remembered as a loyal friend, colleague, coach, and mentor for so many in the CC community. In the brief amount of time that he served as our VP of Advancement, he was able to touch the lives of so many and make a lasting impact on our school.

“Charlie made an immediate and lasting impact on the Catholic Central community. From the moment he joined us, he brought energy, wisdom, and a genuine passion for helping students grow. He taught CC students not just about business, but about leadership, confidence, and the importance of building connections. His guidance shaped so many of us, and his kindness will never be forgotten. We promise to continue your mission, Coach. Please keep Mr. Siracusa and his family in your prayers.” - Build a Better Business Club students

Jim Moylan ’62 knew the feeling all too well: pulling into a gas station and suddenly realizing you cannot remember which side of the car the gas tank is on. On a cold, rainy day, that small frustration sparked an idea that would go on to change automobile dashboards forever.

Moylan wrote a letter to Ford executives suggesting a simple fix an arrow next to the fuel gauge to show which side of the car the gas tank is on. That small but powerful symbol, now commonly known as the “Moylan Arrow,” has since saved countless drivers time, frustration, and embarrassment at the pump.

His story was recently featured in The Wall Street Journal in an article by Ben Cohen titled, “The Genius Whose Simple Invention Saved Us From Shame at the Gas Station.”

Jim Moylan passed away in December 2025 at the age of 80, but his legacy lives on every time a driver pulls up to the pump. Catholic Central is proud to honor Jim for his ingenuity, innovation, and Shamrock excellence.
