A Message from the
President
Dear Alumni and Friends, Catholic education has a great history in our beloved Archdiocese of Detroit. Last fall I spent a wonderful Saturday with Mike Butler ’71, who is an aficionado of our Catholic heritage in Detroit. We visited dozens of churches all around the Detroit area, both those

THE HAPPENING ’90s
What was it like in former days? A beautiful church, a large high school that once housed 800 students, a grade school (one of the few still open in the city), and large convent and a rectory with almost twenty bedrooms. Indeed the social life of thousands of families centered around the activities of the parish. And within a mile there are more churches: St. Leo, St. Anne de Detroit, St. Hedwig… We all know that times have evolved, the demographics of Detroit have evolved, the percentage of Catholic families who regularly practice their faith has evolved… so much has changed. At one point there were over a hundred Catholic high

schools in our Archdiocese! Today there are fewer than thirty. Throughout all this noble history, Detroit Catholic Central has much to be thankful for. We are the only Catholic school in Michigan with a population which exceeds a thousand students. This year we will celebrate our 90th anniversary. Indeed the Lord continues to bless us! CC is an integral part of the rich Catholic history of our archdiocese. I would love to be able to listen to the stories of my Basilian confreres who founded the school back in 1928, and I enjoy hearing the stories of our oldest and wisest esteemed alumni. We Basilians are blessed that CC’s first president, Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 (who also served as teacher, athletic director, and principal) continues to serve our beloved school with pastoral passion and great fidelity. While we celebrate CC’s 90th anniversary, we also will be celebrating Fr. Elmer’s 90th birthday. I hope to see many of you at our 90/90 celebration on May 12! I pray that the Risen Christ continue to bless you and your families. CC remains a faithful mission of the Church, and I pray that all of our alumni, both those who practice their Catholic faith, and those who for whatever reason do not, experience the intense love of the Savior, Jesus, who continues to be the reason for Catholic Central, and always will. Blessings,
Fr. John B. Huber, C.S.B., Ed.D. President

Catholic Central Marks 90/90 Milestone by Fr. William Riegel, C.S.B.
May 2018 is, of course, that special month dedicated to Mary, Alma Mater. With great joy, Pope Francis has announced a new Festival dedicated to Mary, Mother of the Church, on the Monday following Pentecost. How appropriate it is for our school and our local Basilian Community for we mark 90 years of faithful ministry in the Catholic education of youth. The Basilians, lay faculty, and staff can be proud of this calling and challenge. I am reminded of the liturgical phrase used in our Sacramental Celebrations: “May God, who began this good work, bring it to fulfillment.” We also mark the 90th birthday of our beloved Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ‘46. He is indeed an example of that old saying, “Basilians never retire!” Catholic Central has been guided by his strong guidance for many years. We pray that Fr. Elmer may continue to enjoy good health and many more years among us.
There are also Basilians at Catholic Central who, this year, mark significant birthdays and ordination anniversaries. Among those is Fr. Ray Paramo, C.S.B. who marks 50 years of ministry here at the school. These significant moments for Basilians remind us that, as Pope Francis said, we must “be shepherds with the smell of sheep.” As I look at the walls of the school, I see so many pictures of Basilians who have contributed their talents to educating so many students since 1928. However, we have not done this alone. “90/90” also celebrates the many, many lay teachers and staff who have also helped make Catholic Central what it is today. Basilian collaboration with the laity is certainly one of our charisms. We do realize the number of Basilians may decrease. However, this is not a time to be fearful. If we have done our work, then the ministry of the Catholic education of CC men will continue with the same vision. St. Paul reminds us that it is the “message,” not the “messenger,” that is important. Again, faith ensures that “what God has begun, He WILL indeed bring it to fulfillment!”
I end with this wonderful reflection on the Priesthood by Fr. Karl Rahner, S.J. The priest is not an angel sent from heaven He is a man-chosen from among men, A member of the Church, a Christian. Remaining man and Christian, He begins to speak to you the Word of God. The word is not his own. No, he comes to you because God has told him to proclaim God’s Word. Perhaps he has not entirely understood it himself. Perhaps he adulterates it. But he believes, and despite his fear He knows he must communicate God’s Word to you. For must not some of us say something about God, About eternal life; about the majesty of grace In our sanctified being? Must not some one of us speak of sin, The judgement and mercy of God? So, my dear friends, pray for him, carry him, So that he might be able to sustain others by bringing to them The mystery of God’s love revealed in Jesus Christ. 8

From those humble beginnings was created an institution that has graduated several thousand alumni who have continued to take their CC education and become leaders in their communities and the world. CC will be celebrating its 90th birthday throughout this year, which coincides with the 90th birthday of Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46, and the main event is a celebration on campus May 12th. Maybe it was coincidence or maybe it was divine intervention to have Richard Elmer and CC both born in the same year. Regardless of which one it was, Fr. Elmer is one of the great men who have come out of our alma mater and few, if any, have had as big of an impact on Detroit Catholic Central’s past or future over the years.

LEGACY SOCIETY New Tax Law Gives Long-Awaited Assistance For Paying Catholic Central Tuition
Do you and family members frequently ask yourselves: Why doesn’t the government give parochial school parents some tax breaks to help with tuition finances? Well, there is now an excellent tool to help and it may be used immediately. The new 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has expanded the 529 savings plan which, until now, was limited to defraying college tuition and related expenses. It can now be used to help with tuition at private/ parochial elementary and high schools. Here are the main features of the expanded 529 portion of this new tax plan. Expanded 529 Savings Plan – Many of us have established 529 Savings Plans for our son’s or grandson’s college tuition and related expenses. As the new Federal 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act specifies, one can now withdraw up to $10,000 per year, per student, from one’s 529 Savings Plan for the purpose of paying for private/parochial school tuition at the elementary and high school levels. There are no Federal taxes on these withdrawals! Note: State tax laws on 529 Plans vary. Within the State of Michigan (and other states), it is unclear at this time whether the earnings withdrawn for CC tuition from a Michigan Education Savings Plan 529 (MESP529), or funds from another state’s 529 plan, would be subject to the State of Michigan tax. We have been in discussions with organizations such as the Mackinac Center, MANS, and Plante Moran, and they, as well as others within the private/parochial school systems, are awaiting clarification from the Attorney General of the State of Michigan. Given the uncertainty of the taxation position by the State of Michigan (and other states), it is highly recommended that you consult with your tax and/or financial advisor to determine to what extent your 529 Plan can, in concert with your specific financial situation, help fund a CC education for your son or grandson at this point in time. We all know that a solid, college-prep education from a prestigious, Catholic institution like Catholic Central is the best formula for optimizing the chances for a boy’s success, not only by preparing for college, the military, or a skilled trades program, but also for developing into a mature, young man. Therefore, if you have already established a 529 and have a son or grandson at CC today or will soon be at CC, consider using those funds for his Catholic Central tuition. If you have a son or grandson whose future you believe should lead him to Catholic Central, consider using those 529 funds for his CC education. It may assist you in providing the young man with the same special spiritual, educational, and life-long friendships experience that thousands of CC graduates have been so fortunate to have as part of their lives. When the State of Michigan’s tax treatment of MESP529 funds used for CC tuition is finalized by the State, we shall pass on this information. In the meantime, consult with your tax/financial advisor to learn how you might currently take advantage of the new Federal tax law on 529 program funding for private/parochial elementary and high schools. God Bless,

This year’s DRIVE was another huge success. The Student Ticket DRIVE is an annual event that is synonymous with school spirit at Catholic Central. Each year, students sell raffle tickets and collect money for tuition assistance. The seven school days that make up “DRIVE week” are comprised of half days and assemblies that promote school spirit and competition among the students, faculty, and staff.

The theme for this year was “Game On.” Each homeroom selected a game within their respective categories and decorated their homerooms and hallways accordingly. The freshmen represented iPad games, the sophomores board games, the juniors arcade games, and the seniors video games. The decorations were outstanding and highlighted our students’ skill, creativity, and imagination. The videos, entertainment, and various shenanigans that filled the week were enjoyed by everyone. The total amount of money brought in reached $484,457.13. That money will go directly toward tuition assistance for next year’s students. Our Principal, Fr. Dennis Noelke, C.S.B. ’71, made it clear to the students that many families will be able to receive much-needed financial support toward tuition because of their efforts and generosity. For this achievement, Fr. Noelke rewarded the students with 11 DRIVE holidays. Also, Stephen Juncaj ’18 was awarded the David Bullock ’16 Spirit of the Drive Award.

The Shambot B Team took the Championship by leading their alliance over the A Team’s alliance, qualifying both teams for the State Finals, but the awards didn’t stop there. The D Team won the Amaze award for their creative design strategy. The B Team won the Design award, the top Engineering award, and the A Team took the highest honor of the tournament as the all-around best team in the Eastern half of the state, winning the Excellence award.

Chinese Zodiac Art Contest
Shamrocks Published in UP NORTH LITERARY JOURNAL by Jake Marmul ’07
Erik Maahs ’19 is a third-year Chinese student at Catholic Central. Erik’s art work was entered in the 2018 Chinese Zodiac Art Contest co-sponsored by the Confucius Institute of Wayne State University and Schoolcraft College on February 27th.
At its core, Up North Literary Journal is a web-based literary journal seeking to showcase the very best creative work of emerging and established writers and artists in the Midwest. Its mission is to bring the work of high school students into conversation with the work of experienced writers and artists at any point of their career, and see what new discussions, perspectives, and ideas are formed.
His work, an acrylic portrayal of a Chinese Chow Chow dog, won 1st Place in the high school poster category. One of the reasons he chose the Chow Chow as his subject was that unlike most dogs with pinkish tongues, Chow Chow’s have a grayish tongue, as portrayed in Erik’s painting. Erik also added the Chinese characters GongXi for the traditional Chinese New Year’s greeting. His poster was displayed during March in the Liberal Arts Building at Schoolcraft College.
All in all, they devote at least half of their journal to the work of high school students, while the other half is comprised of writers and artists of all ages and [stages] in their careers.
