A Message from the

President

Dear Alumni and Friends, On behalf of the Catholic Central Family on Wixom Road, I extend Eastertide greetings to all of you all over the country. Springtime is always filled with beauty and hope, when we witness countless signs of new life budding forth all around us. For us at the school, these natural reminders of renewal and growth cannot come soon enough in this difficult year when we have suffered the pain and anguish of tragedy and death among Shamrock families who are near and dear to us. May the shining light and blessing of Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, continue to illuminate and enrich the lives of all of us who believe in him, especially those families who have entrusted a Shamrock to his promise of eternal life. May the stone that rolled away from the Lord’s tomb on that first Easter Sunday morning shatter the cold and bitter darkness of the graves of all those whom we have never stopped loving. May the love of God remind us always, as do “the darling buds of May” over and over again each year, that with God there is only life, and life everlasting.

On April 25th of this year, CC will be happy to celebrate the 25th annual Alumni Dinner. Amidst the parade of history and brotherhood that is always the mark of this sparkling evening, we will be proud to honor Art “King Arthur” Ronan ’47 and Fr. Kenneth J. Decker, C.S.B. ’56 with the Distinguished Alumnus Award for their outstanding contributions to CC and the wider community. On a personal note, I wish to thank Fr. Decker publicly for his loyalty to CC while he was Superior General of the Basilian Fathers (2002-2010). It was during his tenure in this important role of service and with his abiding support that CC moved from 14200 Breakfast Drive in Redford to 27225 Wixom Road in Novi. Thank you, Fr. Decker, because you agree, along with everyone who has stopped in to visit us at our fifth and final location, that it is nothing short of spectacular. Thank you also, Fr. Decker, for your phone call to me on April 1, 2005, when you discussed with me my transfer and appointment to CC from St. Michael’s College School in Toronto. Looking back on these last eight years, could either of us have foreseen on that fateful April Fool’s Day the rich blessings that the Catholic Central Family was preparing to lavish upon this upstart French-speaking priest from the northern shores of Lake Ontario? Yes, we should have foreseen it, because this is what CC is and does … always.

In this issue of the Aluminator, we are proud to feature and honor all the student members and coaches of our expert and accomplished Academic Teams over the years. Theirs is a winning history that leaps from summit to pinnacle year after year, usually with championship trophies securely in the bag, as team after team scales the dizzying heights of multifaceted factual knowledge in every field of study, astute interpretation, cavernous memory, and blindingly rapid recall. I know that my indulgence in these adjectives in no way reaches the brink of exaggeration because I have witnessed for myself on many occasions the intellectual circus of Quiz Bowl practice at school.

I have stopped in to the coaches’ classrooms, enjoyed spending some time listening to the quick beeps of their buzzers, and then left with my head spinning, but still congratulating myself because I was beginning to understand that I knew, after all, the answer to the 34th question, but that was when the team was already scribbling down the formulas for the 39th question. You get the picture! We marvel incredulously at these powerful and alert Shamrock minds, and we are indebted to their coaches’ expertise for keeping them fertile and cultivated. It is sheer pleasure and such an adventure to open a conversation with any of them, because one can never predict where it will lead and where it will end. We have found that the hard work and discipline of this mental sport always lead to discovery and knowledge. As their impressive efforts continue to deepen the goodness of Shamrock brotherhood, we salute our Academic Teams for filling our hearts with pride and gratitude, and we wish them continued success with future state and national championships.

They know how to reach for the top, and always do.

CHATTERBOX Staying Connected With Your Classmates THE NIFTY ’50s 1951 - FR. DAN FRASER has published his thirteenth booklet called “Questions Volume One.” Within he takes 30 questions asked by colleges and baby boomers and tries to give some intelligible answers.

many other positions. He recently received the National BSA Heroism Award and the Red Cross Certificate of Merit for saving the life of a co-worker who had two brain aneurisms burst. He maintained the employee with CPR skills he refreshes regularly with the scouts and Red Cross until help arrived. As a result, he currently appears on local Red Cross television ads promoting training. Gary is a transactional tax lawyer at the law firm of Eastman & Smith and has received Lawyer of the Year recognition for 2013 from the Best Lawyers in America in his field of practice.

1977 - JOE LUTHER often has to travel on business, but he has found time to travel for pleasure recently. He reports that the extended Luther family celebrated last Christmas in Hawaii. Those four of the family members who are CC alumni posed for a group picture while on Maui.

1958 - DR. FRANK CAIN is a retired dentist currently living in Ocala, Florida with his wife, Jean. After graduating from CC, Frank earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Detroit, where he later earned his DDS degree.

Following graduation from U of D, Frank served two years active duty with the Army. He then had his own dental practice in Waterford, Michigan, until his retirement.

THE GROOVY ’70s 1973 - GARY HARDEN lives in Toledo with his wife, Sherrie. He recently wrote that his three sons, Greg, Kyle, and Stephen are all adults, in college and working, pursuing the American Dream.

He is very active with the Boy Scouts of America, and is in his second year as President of the Erie Shores Council, after serving 10 years as a scoutmaster and

More recently in March he traveled to Montana to visit life-long friend Walter Melvin Roberts III ’77. The photo shows them at the thermals of Yellowstone National Park. Walter is presently Amendment Coordinator for the state senate of Montana. He made a conscious decision to do this kind of work after being a professor of classics at the University of Vermont for several years.

He graduated from Columbia University, the University of Chicago, and U. C. Berkley as a classics scholar.

1979 - KEVIN STEPHENS has been promoted to President of Suddenlink’s Commercial & Advertising Operations (CAO) organization, headquartered in Dallas, Texas. As a seasoned and forwardthinking communications executive, he was instrumental in the formation of CAO and has led the division as senior vice president since joining Suddenlink in May 2006.

Kevin is responsible for leading Suddenlink’s fast-growing business services, carrier and advertising groups.

Having more than doubled its revenues under his leadership, CAO is now a $350 million division providing targeted advertising sales and mission-critical data, voice and video services to business and carrier customers.

CableFAX: The Magazine has named Kevin to its list of “Top Minorities in Cable” every year since 2007. He is a corporate officer with Suddenlink, and sits on the boards of directors for the Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau, the National Association for Multi-Ethnicity in Communications (NAMIC), the Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County (Texas), and the Institute for Communication Technology Management at the University of Southern California.

Kevin also holds an MBA from the University of Southern California and a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Michigan.

1979 - TOM STEPIEN lives in Silicon Valley, California with his wife Carolyn and two teenage children, Isabelle and Andrew. He recently wrote: “I am heading up an energy storage company – Primus Power. www.primuspower.com. As you likely know, energy storage decouples an instantaneous electricity supply from demand and improves the economics, environmental footprint and reliability of the entire power system. It is the missing link to successfully integrating intermittent solar and wind energy. We’re three-and-ahalf years old and, with a little more luck and another round of funding, will ship our first system in a year.”

THE TECHNO ’80s 1985 - TONY BONFIGLIO is a practicing Emergency Physician in the St. John/ Providence Health System. He is the Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at St. John Macomb and Oakland Hospitals in Warren and Madison Heights. Tony is also the Medical Director of the Macomb County EMS Medical Control Authority.

Additionally, Tony is the Immediate Past President of the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians (MCEP). He has been married to his wife, Anne, for 18 years. They have four children and live in Bloomfield Hills.

1987 - KEVIN ROBERTS gave a presentation to the CC faculty and staff during an in-service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 21, 2013. Kevin spoke about ADHD and how our faculty might incorporate different teaching techniques that prove effective when dealing with students who have ADHD.

outside Philadelphia, so my schedule is very flexible. The class of 1993’s 20th reunion is this year. How, time flies! I recall being told at CC that my time there would go by in the blink of an eye. It is so true.

THE HAPPENING ’90s

My Castellano [Spanish] is terrible. I learned it while spending time in Ecuador.

I know enough to order a sandwich and ask directions, and maybe enough to receive the correct beer. It makes for a good time.

1992 - BRIAN DUGGAN is being honored

by Northwestern Mutual, a Troy-based financial representative, with membership in its 2012 Forum group, which recognizes an outstanding year of helping people achieve financial security. Only the top five percent of Northwestern Mutual’s more than 6,000 financial representatives receive this annual honor.

Duggan, affiliated with the Seitzinger Network Office in Troy, Michigan, joins this distinguished group along with other representatives from across the country who have qualified for this honor. “People are turning to trusted financial representatives like Brian to help them plan for the long-term,” said Todd M. Schoon, executive vice president at Northwestern Mutual. Forum honorees were recognized at a conference held November 11-14, in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Honorees also learned new insights from prominent speakers and shared knowledge with colleagues during the conference.

1992 - STAN TARGOSZ III has a college planning company called “Education Planning Resources” which does presentations at local high schools. He has been building this business for almost six years and has recently added a radio show on WMUZ 103.5 FM at 9:00-10:00 pm on Monday nights. On the show, they discuss and share concepts and ideas for families to reduce the amount of money they spend on college tuition for their children. You can live stream at www.wmuz.com. 1993 - NICK FARRELL writes: “I am living in San Francisco. I work from home for a healthcare IT company based just

I am doing very well, spending time taking photos, eating my way through the food scene of San Francisco, Napa, etc., and enjoying the weather as best I can when not working. I’ve done a lot of traveling in and around California, Arizona and Hawaii. My girlfriend and I have really enjoyed checking out some of the Missions of California. The Missions in Carmel and Santa Barbara are our favorites.

1994 - ANTHONY HESANO was one of the first employees at LifeLock and has been an Enterprise Senior Sales Executive for LifeLock for over five years. Recently, he helped contribute to the company’s Initial Public Offering from a start -up.

LifeLock protects consumers from the crime of identity theft and Anthony has been a key figure in developing their strategic partner channel. Anthony and his wife, Allison, currently live in Arizona and are the parents of two daughters, Olivia and Avery.

Anthony still plays basketball, enjoys boating, and loves getting the Aluminator to keep up with his fellow Alumni.

1997 - PETER RET graduated with honors from the Physician’s Assistant Program at Wayne State University in May 2012. Currently, Peter is working in the dermatology field in Livonia and in the emergency room at Henry Ford Hospital in West Bloomfield. He and his wife celebrated their 7th wedding anniversary last October.

THE VIRTUAL ’00s 2000 - MICHAEL SIEMBOR earned a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the State University of New

York at Albany on December 16, 2012. He is currently in his second year working as a therapist at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York.

2002 - TONY KREUCHER is currently teaching Theology at Dearborn Divine Child High School.

2003 - MATT SIEMBOR graduated from the University of Michigan with a double major in computer engineering and computer science in 2008. Following college, Matt worked 3½ years as a product development engineer for Intel in Hillsboro, Oregon. Matt left Intel one year ago to take a position as a software developer at Microsoft in Redmond, Washington.

2004 - ALI DANESHVAR graduated from the University of Michigan in 2008 and from the Michigan State University School of Medicine in 2012. He is now a firstyear resident in Dermatology at Botsford Hospital in Farmington, Michigan.

and successfully completed the evaluation process in order to become a commissioned officer in the United States Marine Corps (USMC). At Catholic Central in July 2012, Patrick was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the USMC. He is currently awaiting orders to report to The Basic School where he will continue his training.

2004 - BILL MAKELA and his wife Rebecca were married in June 2012.

They enjoyed their honeymoon in the Dominican Republic. Bill works at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia as an Operation Project Manager. He recently helped with opening a new wing at St. Mary’s which hosted approximately 60 CC students for a Medical Day in January 2013.

2004 - MIKE MONTEREY earned his B.S. in Physiology at Michigan State University in 2008, his M.S. in Basic Medical Sciences at the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2012 and is currently pursuing his M.D. at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

2008 - RYAN GAGE will graduate in May with a Masters in Accounting from Southern Methodist University. He will be taking the CPA exams this summer and joining Deloitte in Dallas next fall.

2008 - SCOTT KOVANDA a senior punter for the Ball State University football team, competed in the NFLPA Bowl on January 19, 2013, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Scott was a finalist for the Ray Guy Award, given to the nation’s top punter in college football.

Over his career, he pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 236 times. He also was invited to participate in the NFL Scouting Combine.

2008 - PATRICK LAUER graduated from the University of San Diego with a BA in History. While at USD, Patrick was a member of the Varsity Rowing Team and the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. Upon graduation, he went to the Marine Corps Officer Candidates School 6

2009 and 2012 - TIM DEZELSKI and KYLE COOPER are both members of the Hillsdale College Basketball Team. The Hillsdale Chargers compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in NCAA Division II.

Michael will graduate in May 2013 from the University of Notre Dame with a B.A., with a double major in political science and philosophy. He will commission in May as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He chose military intelligence and will attend the MI Basic Officer Leaders Course in Fort Huachuca, Arizona, next fall. He hopes to be stationed either at Fort Carson or Fort Bragg in an airborne unit.

Garrett will also graduate in May 2013 from the University of Notre Dame but with a civil engineering degree. He has been awarded a slot as an Engineer Officer.

As a commissioned second lieutenant, he will attend the Engineer Basic Officer Leadership Course in Fort Leonard Wood before taking a post with an engineer battalion. He plans to fulfill his scholarship commitment of four years of active duty as a civil engineer. After four years, he will decide if he wants to remain in the army or pursue a civilian career with a civil engineering firm.

THE CONNECTED ’10s

2009 - MICHAEL DOMPIERRE and GARRETT QUICK received the Distinguished Military Graduate honor through the University of Notre Dame’s Army Reserve Officers Training Corps.

The Distinguished Military Graduate honor is awarded to the top 20 percent of the nation’s senior level commissioned ROTC cadets for consistent performance at a high level. This award remains with a cadet throughout his/her military career.

2010 - SHANE VERPLOEGH, a member of the University of Notre Dame Marching Band, performed before a sellout crowd of 80,000 at Sun Life Stadium at the BCS National Championship Football Game in Miami, Florida, on January 7, 2013. Another Shamrock in the ND Band is Matt Greene ’12.

2010 & 2011 - RICKY GALINDO and ANDREW GARCIA-GARRISON competed in the 2013 Patriot League Championships for Indoor Track & Field hosted at the United States Military Academy at West Point on February 15-17, 2013. Ricky is a junior on the West Point Track & Field Team and earned a secondplace finish in the 3000m race. Andrew is a sophomore on the Bucknell University Track & Field Team and finished 6th in the mile and anchored the winning Distance Medley Relay to help his team win the Gold Medal in that event. Andrew is coached by Kevin Donner ’80, the longtime Head Coach for Bucknell’s Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field Programs. Kevin, Ricky and Andrew were all accomplished athletes at CC for legendary coach, Tony Magni.

Al, Steve, and Bob are members of the Dads’ Club, serving on CCDC Board at various times throughout the years. The six of them have enjoyed watching their sons participate in sports and school events. They also have a great time together at the Christmas Dance and Quiz Night! As their boys grew in the Catholic Central Family, they too developed a strong friendship that has lasted for many years. About a year ago, Teri Firek had the idea for a European Road Trip. They were all up for it. Düsseldorf Germany was the starting point and they were only 60 short kilometers from Cologne. The Cologne Cathedral is one of the great wonders of Europe. It has a very long history since the foundation was laid in 1248. It was one of the few structures in Cologne that survived the destruction of WWII. Although the Cathedral received some damage during the war, it wasn’t leveled like the rest of the city. Post-war, it was restored to its full grandeur by 1956. In October 2012, the six attended the High Mass at the Cologne Cathedral, filled with tradition and solemnity. It was beautiful. Afterwards they walked around the plaza before they journeyed to The Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy for the next few days.

Winter 2013 Mystery Photo Identified John De Puydt ’67 called on January 14, 2013 to say that the mystery photo was taken in the cafeteria line at 6565 W. Outer Drive in the mid-late 50s. John also says that the photo appears to have been “flipped” from its original negative. He was a cashier in the cafeteria from 19641967 and remembers the food line going the opposite way.

Next Year Technology Further Enhances the Classroom at CC

D., Principal Many of our alumni will remember freshman year at Catholic Central with all of its twists and turns as students get used to living in the vibrant culture and atmosphere that is CC. One dilemma that remains unforgettable in so many graduates’ minds is the weight of one’s book bag. It is not unusual to see freshmen who weigh less than 100 pounds have to carry books in a book bag or backpack that can come close to one’s own weight, in addition to having to carry another bag for athletic equipment or a musical instrument. This dilemma will soon become a thing of the past as students will be using iPads for their textbooks beginning this fall.

As the years have progressed, the infamous “book bill” sent to parents in the fall often shocked moms and dads, especially those already struggling to make ends meet to pay tuition. Since the book bill consisted not only of textbooks, but also of all kinds of additional fees (technology, standardized testing, graduation, parking, art supplies, etc.) it was not unusual for the book bill to be between $600 and $1,000 in addition to tuition. With the evolution of technology, CC has been keeping a close eye on the use of tablets, laptops and iPads. Our sisters at Mercy High School have been using laptops for over a decade, at an additional cost of almost $2,000 a year. This year Mercy freshmen began to use iPads instead of laptops, saving them quite a bit of money. Ladywood High School will be using iPads for all students next year, and our friends at St. Mary’s Catholic Central High School in Monroe began using them this year.

While relieving the burden of carrying very heavy textbooks is one positive effect of incorporating an iPad program at CC, it is not the main reason.

There are already some classes at CC which use an exclusive digital curriculum, meaning classes such as biology and chemistry have no textbook at all, but rather a class webpage which is professionally prepared and constantly modified and updated so that students have access to the latest research, current articles on subjects they are studying, and an endless array of digital resources.

In addition to the benefit of having one’s textbooks on one light and small device, the uses that the iPad will offer both student and teacher are endless. Students can take notes and e-mail them back to themselves.

Many of their texts will be “in the cloud” and accessible from any computer wired to the internet that they may have access to. There are literally thousands of apps that will help students in all kinds of ways both in their classrooms and elsewhere. It will require, however, developing the skills to use this technology appropriately. Students will also have to remember to charge their device on a regular basis, and take good care of it. They will need to stay on task in the classroom and not get distracted by other things accessible on their device. This new program will offer them uncountable ways to enhance their education, but like many other aspects of our lives where freedom is involved, the device must be a tool they can use to their advantage and control, without allowing the device to control them or take them down paths that are inappropriate or unhealthy.

Most CC alumni are experienced in the growing world of technology and how it has affected both their personal and professional lives. Please say a prayer that as the next generation of Catholic Central Shamrocks study and learn in a highly technological environment, that they stay grounded in the things that truly matter in life: their relationship with God, a life inspired by the Gospel of Jesus, family and community. The ways of having the truth of God’s creation exposed to them may be changing from paper to a digital format, but the unconditional love of God and what he calls a Man of Catholic Central to be and to do must always remain the priority.

Most classes next year will be using a digital text rather than the classic textbook, which includes the following advantages: unlike classic textbooks, digital texts are updated yearly; digital texts contain images that can be enlarged or zoomed in on at the click of a finger while other images will be animated to explain the concept being acquired by the learner; digital texts will either contain videos or links to videos; with many digital texts students will be able to highlight areas of the text or type notes right into the text.

The advantage of books on iPads is that many of the high school textbooks cost less than $20 a piece, whereas the price of classical textbooks is often well over $100, and the digital editions for androids, while often less expensive than the classical textbooks, are significantly higher than those for iPads. The “new generation retina screens” on iPads protect the eyes from strain and will not have the same effect that many of us have experienced sitting in front of a computer screen all day.

Reflections on The March for Life in Washington D.C.

By Fr. James O’Neill, C.S.B. After several years of being invited on the March for Life and unable to attend because of other commitments, I was happy to accompany our students this year. I always feel that Catholics should keep a pro-life agenda in their consciences and give of their time and commitments to pro-life whenever possible. Our boys on the trip and our teacherchaperones were of similar sentiments coupled with a zest for life and the thrill of an excursion during school hours where their good sentiments and good behavior would be supported in prayer by the whole school. Our opportunity to pray and to express ourselves in a prayerful context in fun and novel ways began on the bus and continued throughout the weekend with meal prayers in public restaurants, Eucharist at the hotel, prayers on the March itself, and a large Eucharistic celebration with the bishop of Saginaw diocese and many attending priests at the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. on Saturday afternoon. Our boys had the opportunity of lending their support for the cause of life and joining the wider Church in prayer for a common cause. We learned a lot about our Church, our country, its priorities and its heroes.

REFLECTIONS ON THE MARCH FOR LIFE • SPRING 2013

As a teenager growing up after Roe v. Wade I would often reflect on the friends I would have known had the Supreme Court not made abortion a widespread reality. I honestly don’t know the reflections or the specific reasons of most of our young men who came to peacefully protest this decision, but I am proud, for none of them complained and they made my role as a chaperone not just an easy one but a blessed one as well.

We experienced the great memorials of our country, were humbled and silenced at Arlington, and saw the Naval Memorial on a beautiful night as the snow was almost magically highlighted through the huge lights. Of course, there were also a few humbled by the Louisville Cardinal Basketball team’s failure to put Georgetown away at the buzzer, but most were cheering for the home team.

Most importantly, we experienced the longest standing March in U.S. history with a crowd made up mainly of Catholic young people from across the nation. Of course, one does not need to be Christian to see the immorality of abortion. Life begins at conception. One simply needs to be interested in truth, as a group labeling themselves “Secular Pro-Life” attested to. But it seems the people who believe in the Incarnation, the ones who celebrated

Christmas a month before, see the sacred image of Christ in the face of every child. We might use the term “fetus” for human life in the womb before birth, but it is simply Latin for “little one.”

And so I praise the 43 Shamrocks and four chaperones for giving of their time and energy to stand and fight for the “little ones.”

Mike Schloff ‘65 By: Tom Jensen ’65

During April 1970, off the coast of Little Creek, Virginia, the young Marine Second Lieutenant, as a member of an amphibious assault team, practiced beach landings prior to his deployment to Vietnam. The Navy coxswain said he bottomed out the landing craft on a sandbar so he dropped the ramp and off went the Lieutenant along with his men into water over their heads with full combat gear and their M-14 rifles. As his head bobbed above the water visions of the Fr. French, C.S.B. freshman gym class from the autumn of 1961 flashed through his head. The old priest taught him a lot: boxing, wrestling, weightlifting and survival skills.

As he struggled to the beach, the Lieutenant remembered Fr. French telling him to never give up. The Marine pulled himself to his feet, looked out at the ocean and breathed a sigh of relief. He had almost drowned before setting foot in Vietnam.

TEACH ME GOODNESS, DISCIPLINE AND KNOWLEDGE. Mike Schloff graduated from St. Suzanne Elementary School in northwest Detroit and enrolled in CC in 1961, with six of his classmates. He decided to attend CC because he wanted to be with the best.

Fr. Wilfrid Kehoe, C.S.B. was the principal and Mike traveled to school on the DSR bus for a year and then in his ’57 Ford for the final three years. He enjoyed the “Drive” and Boys’ Bowl assemblies the most and loved the basketball and football games especially against CC’s number one rival, U. of D.

His most memorable sports activity occurred when he volunteered to play goalie for Fr. Enright, C.S.B.’s Emmert Chevrolet freshman hockey team as a senior, after he heard of several injuries on the team.

Mike, along with 190 CC men, graduated at Ford Auditorium on June 6, 1965.

Mike knew the significance of “D-Day” from his father, Sergeant Pat Schloff, a U.S. Army Veteran, who participated in the invasion of Okinawa in WWII. Mike attended Wayne State University for a year and then volunteered to join the Marine Corps officer program in October 1966, as a private. Mike attended officer boot camp at Quantico, Virginia during the summer of 1967 and spent an additional eight weeks at PLC Officer Candidate School at Quantico during the summer of 1968, along with his side-kick, Tom Kemper ’65. Mike was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from Wayne State in September 1969. Mike’s next assignment was a five-month stint in the Basic School, which is infantry training for all new Marine Officers. Mike then completed three months of Army Artillery Forward Observer training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Lt. Schloff then volunteered to serve in Vietnam. Mike served

The hope that carried them through the ordeal was that they would be “not forgotten” back home. in combat for about a year in Vietnam. He made First Lieutenant in December 1970.

Lt. Schloff spent five months at a remote outpost situated on Hill 270, near the border

of Laos. Mike was in charge of a platoon of Marine infantrymen and conducted surveillance and interdiction of NVA troops attempting to come down the Ho Chi Minh Trail from North Vietnam into South Vietnam.

Their position was constantly receiving sniper fire, mortar fire and offensive probing by NVA troops. A number of his young Marines were injured. The duty was alternately boring and then terrifying. The hope that carried them through the ordeal was that they would be “not forgotten” back home.

First Lieutenant Schloff was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation, the Vietnam Civil Action Unit Citation and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry Unit Citation.

When asked by a fellow CC Veteran why he volunteered for the Marines, Schloff answered, “for the same reason I went to CC, I wanted to be the best and I would do it all over again tomorrow, if asked”.

Mike left active duty in 1972, but remained in the Marine Reserve and was promoted to Captain in 1974. When President Carter issued the “Reduction in Forces” order, Captain Schloff was honorably discharged in 1977, despite his reluctance to retire from the Marines. After his active duty ended, Mike entered and graduated from U. of D. Law School, receiving his Juris Doctor degree. Upon graduation Mike worked as an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney for Oakland County and then as a trial lawyer

and as a partner in a Bloomfield Hills law firm and currently runs his own law firm. Mike has earned numerous professional awards amongst which include being selected as a “Super Lawyer” from 2008-2012, being awarded both the Oakland County Bar Association Distinguished Service Award and the Operation Afghan-Iraq PAC Award for 2011. He has served as a Director and President of the Oakland County Bar Association, a Trustee of the Oakland County Bar Foundation and a Master of the Inns Court.

Mike married his wife, Mary, in 1974, and has two sons, Adam and Ryan. Mike is active at Holy Name Church in Birmingham and has held several coaching positions with the Birmingham schools and community, including serving three years as a high school JV hockey coach.

Mike has written an article for the Oakland Bar Association’s magazine, Laches. The article Not Forgotten appeared in the Fall, 2012, edition. This article explains the goodness that is felt by active duty troops when they receive CARE packages from home. It goes on to explain the attributes of Operation Afghan-Iraq PAC, now known

as Americans Thank Our Troops. Led by Mike, the Veterans Committee of the Oakland County Bar Association has collected over $85,000 to purchase and send needed items to military units deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mike has remained active at Catholic Central over the past 47 years.

Endowment Trust, Scholarships & Planned Gifts

Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge

Promoting Pride and Scholarship in Honor of our Irish Heritage Thanks to the efforts, energy and Irish pride of Jack Cahill ’70, an exciting addition to the Tuition Assistance Program at Catholic Central has been the introduction of the Irish Studies Scholarship Program. Catholic Central has always had a strong Irish connection that is reflected in the Shamrock in our school crest, our nickname, and the many priests, students, alumni, and friends of CC who have Irish roots.

The Irish Studies Scholarship Program is open to all students eligible for financial assistance, regardless of their ethnic roots. All that is required is an interest in Ireland and a commitment to research and willingness to write an essay on a topic that combines Irish history and culture.

The Irish Studies Scholarship Program began in 2010 with a $15,000 donation from the Irish American Unity Conference (IAUC). Many of the members of the IAUC are CC alumni or have strong family connections to Catholic Central. Those fortuitous combinations led to the idea for the Irish Studies Scholarship Program. Working with the seed money from the IAUC, the Irish alumni and families of Catholic Central stepped up with sufficient donations to endow a $1,000 scholarship in 2010.

In 2010 students researched the Irish famine in the 1840s and wrote a three page essay on its causes, development, and effects. Students were directed to the song “The Fields of Athenry” and asked to research and understand the relevance of the lyrics to the Irish Famine. The use of songs and movies has been a feature of the essay topics each year to increase the interest in the topics.

In 2011 the students wrote on the “Bloody Sunday” massacre that occurred during a 1972 civil rights march in Derry, Northern Ireland that was memorialized in songs by both U2 and John Lennon and in a movie of the same name.

In 2012 the applicants researched the cases of the “Guildford Four,” the “Birmingham Six,” and the “Maguire Family.” All of these people were Irish and living in Great Britain when they were falsely convicted in the 1970s for alleged terrorist offenses when the British police used torture and forged confessions. They were subsequently cleared, but only after many had served as long as 17 years in prison. The Guildford Four were the subject of the 1993 movie “In the Name of the Father” which starred Daniel Day Lewis, Emma Thompson and Pete Postlethwaite, all of whom were nominated for Academy Awards for their roles.

The Irish Studies Scholarship Program is not just a scholarship. It has also provided Irish reference materials like Irish America magazine and the Irish Voice newspaper to the school’s Media Center. It is hoped that the success of this program might inspire and provide a model for similar efforts from other alumni (ethnic) groups.

A Message from the Director of Planned Giving

Dear Alumni, The 2013 government tax and pending socialized medicine landscapes are indeed complex. The many changes being implemented will affect all of us to varying degrees. There is good news for IRA owners age 70-1/2 and older via the American Taxpayer Relief Act and for all of us with the preservation of the current individual estate tax at the unified $5 million level (indexed annually for inflation). Not so good news are the changes in tax bracket percentages, itemized deduction and personal exemption limitations, tax rates on dividends and long-term capital gains, a Medicare surtax, and payroll tax increases.

These are all items each of us needs to examine to determine what effect these changes may have on our personal and family incomes. Equally important, estate planning to protect our children, grandchildren, and charitable organizations like Catholic Central may be a more challenging task. I am pleased to report that CC has invested in some excellent resources to assist our alumni and friends in keeping abreast of many of the tax law changes. There are also tools to examine and compare alternative strategies for your estate planning process.

Over 4,000 of you over the age of 40 are now receiving, via email, a monthly eNewsletter with timely financial news and linkages to the CC website www.catholiccentral.net which contains new articles every month that are very useful to one’s estate planning efforts. Alumni Softball Tournament

On Sunday, February 17, 2013, the CC Hockey Program hosted two Fr. James Enright, C.S.B. Memorial Alumni Hockey Games.

Over 50 alumni participated in the event held at Compuware Arena in Plymouth. The games consisted of two 30-minute periods each.

Each player received a custom jersey to keep. They were also able to bring their friends and families to watch them relive their glory days. The games were organized by Mike Giordano, the longtime General Manager of the CC Hockey program. Shamrock Hockey merchandise, including alumni apparel, was sold by D&D Bicycles and Hockey, the official merchandise provider of CC Hockey.

In-game announcing was done by Jim Gibbons ’68. Pictures were taken by Mike Rossi and Ed Zylik. Afterward, all players gathered at CJ’s Brewing Company to celebrate the day.

After the great success of the Alumni Basketball League, the Alumni Association would like to begin Alumni Softball. To begin this endeavor, we will be hosting a 1-day tournament at CC on Saturday, June 15, 2013. The tournament will be a round-robin format consisting of hopefully 8-10 teams. Teams should include 12-15 players. All alumni, current dads, and dads of alumni are invited to participate. Additionally, this event could be the start of a terrific father-son weekend - Softball on Saturday, Father’s Day on Sunday, and then the annual Athletic Department Golf Outing on Monday!

Finally, we have plans of forming a weekly alumni softball league in the summer of 2014.

1983 Winter Reunion Members of the Class of 1983 gathered for their annual winter reunion at Compuware Arena in Plymouth on Friday, December 7, 2012.

The Class usually organizes their winter reunion around a Red Wings game and Nemo’s, but, due to the NHL lockout, they decided to attend a Plymouth Whalers game. They met at CJ’s Brewing Company before the game for dinner and drinks. Some classmates actually made their way to the game! Next year they are considering reserving a private room in the back of the restaurant with a view of the ice.

Shamrock Reunions Shamrocks in Florida The annual Florida Reunion was hosted once again at Sharky’s on the Pier in Venice, Florida, on Saturday, March 9, 2013. Alumni Retreat

The Class of 1959 gathered at the Black Finn in Royal Oak on November 28, 2012, to celebrate the holidays together.

They had almost 20 guys from the class in attendance.

John Lutz ’59 helped to organize the gathering. The Class of 1959 tries to schedule a few gatherings each year to stay in touch.

Members of the Alumni Association and Dads’ Club attended the annual Alumni Association-Dads’ Club retreat at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center in Detroit January 11-13, 2013. This annual retreat provided a nice opportunity for attendees to strengthen their relationship with God and to explore the Catholic faith from a male perspective.

A

cademic team adds to the history of excellence

Extra-curricular programs are not always at the top of the list of considerations when faculty and staff are hired. It is just an economic and scheduling necessity that teachers are hired first and then are fitted as well as possible to the openings in extra-curricular positions.

As a result, sometimes, despite having high quality students, results without the highest quality of coaching are not the best. Quiz Bowl has always been an exception to this.

From the beginning in 1988 Mr. Howard Weinberg was hired with Quiz Bowl in mind.

His single-minded efforts to mold already brilliant students into a formidable team began early.

In the years from 1988 to 2004, CC established itself as a power in this new academic competition. There were many state and national victories as the competition infrastructure was formed.

When it came time for Mr. Weinberg to retire, he didn’t just leave the field to whomever might be available.

Instead he stayed on a year longer than he had planned in order to spend much of the time preparing his successor, Mr. Jason Jones.

As a result there was no decline in the performance of our teams during the transition.

Mr. Jones continued with many victories in State and National competition.

Now that he too has retired from teaching, there are three well-prepared coaches available to continue the work.

They are Mr. Ben Hermann ’98, Mr. Christopher Gismondi ’00 (not pictured) and Mr. Cornish (Freshman Coach).

CC Academic Team: 1985-2004

The CC academic team owes its creation to a five-minute conversation in the fall of 1985.

Frank Garlicki, department head and debate team coach, brought me a couple of invitations to local quiz tournaments that had come to the school. Feeling that CC could use additional interscholastic academic competition, he suggested that I give this activity a try. Deciding that it might be a pleasant diversion, I recruited a team and a few weeks later we began competition in a blaze of anonymity. In my wildest imagination, I could never have foreseen that I had just begun a nineteen-year undertaking that would eventually see my teams win nine state and two national championships.

In the 1986 season we quickly learned that Michigan had many well established programs with far more experienced coaches. Encouraged particularly by Fr. Elmer and Fr. Paramo, we finally broke into the winner’s circle in 1987. Entering as an underdog, the team of John Buckley ’88, Mike Chiang ’87, Mike Smigielski ’88, Erik Sunday ’89 and Stan Abraham ’88 defeated Haslett High School in the finals to win a regional tournament at Alma College. It was to be the first of 110 tournament championships won during my tenure as coach.

1988 saw the inaugural state championship tournament. CC was invited to participate in the two-day competition held in Port Huron. With Matt Hepburn ’88 replacing Mike Chiang who had graduated, CC went unbeaten in the competition, defeating Sterling Heights High School in a championship game televised by PBS. It had taken three years. However, with a state title in hand, CC was firmly ensconced as one of Michigan’s elite teams.

In 1991 CC burst upon the national scene. Warming up by capturing our third state title in four years, the team of Ati Tislerics ’91, Jason Blankenship ’91, John Richards ’91, Mark Stock ’91 and Matt Morrison ’92 headed to Rice University for the national competition carried by the Discovery Channel. Their performance in the tournament was eye opening. Including victories over the national champions of the two previous years, the team was so dominant in round after round of the multi-day tournament that its games were rescheduled for evening hours when other coaches and players were free to watch CC play. Indeed, despite an eventual hiccup in the semifinals, veteran tournament director, Chip Beall, described CC as “the best team I have ever seen.” Clearly in the world of academic competition the reputation of CC’s teams would no longer be restricted to Michigan.

The decade of the 90s was one of constructive growth for the sport. Nationally there was an exponential increase in the number of teams. At the same time, the original factual questions used in competition were replaced by more sophisticated, pyramidal items which required that players use deductive reasoning to arrive at the correct answer. Simultaneously, the CC program grew in size and complexity. The schedule was annually lengthened, junior varsity and frosh divisions were added, an awards banquet was instituted and, with Fr. Elmer’s support, a tournament for eighth grade students was begun as a recruiting tool for the school. Most important, at various times Linda Welborn, Sue Leininger, Chris Sroka ’93 and Ati Tislerics ’91 joined the program to provide indispensable help in dealing with the expanding coaching and administrative tasks. The varsity team, meanwhile, continued to be very competitive winning many tournaments including two

additional state titles. With all of this, however, one goal remained beyond our grasp.

As the century was drawing to a close so was CC’s long quest for a national championship.

After winning our sixth state title, the team of Jesse Norman ’99, Corey Mason ’99, Mark Walkuski ’99, Vince Crafton ’99 and Paul Schultz ’00 was ready for national competition at the University of Oklahoma. In venues reduced by full blast air conditioning to the temperature of Belle Isle in January, the team spent two days brushing aside powerhouse teams as though they were a minor annoyance. The decisive game was a 410-210 CC victory over perennial contender Walton

High School, Marietta, Georgia. After fourteen years of trying, the last hurdle had been cleared.

The 2001 and 2002 teams set out to duplicate the accomplishment of 1999. The 2001 team of Josh Crawford ’01, Chris Hammer ’01, Jeff Shattock ’01, John Schultz ’02, Joe Galea ’02 and Jason Gehan ’01 won states and our second national championship. This time the victory was sealed by a 410-245 score over Detroit Country Day at the University of Michigan. The 2002 team won our eighth state championship. In the national tournament at George Washington University, the squad of Joe Galea ’02, Jerin Philip ’02, Frank Budde ’02, John Schultz ’02, Pete Troyan ’03 and Charles Drummond ’05 came as close to a hat trick of national titles as a 290-300 loss in the finals to Richard Montgomery High School, Rockville, Maryland.

My last season as a coach in 2004 proved to be one of the more interesting. The squad of Jason Winegarden ’04, John Zick ’04, Joel Knight ’06, Carl Thompson ’07 and David Budde ’05

…the team spent two days brushing aside powerhouse teams as though they were a minor annoyance…

In Houston, their glee only thinly masked, opposing coaches were quick to reassure me that no program could produce a top team every year. As the tournament unfolded, however, CC defeated a succession of highly ranked teams to reach the semifinals. Indeed, in a tightly contested semifinal match, CC was denied another chance at a national championship game only when an otherwise correct but mispronounced answer was disallowed. On the flight home I found myself thinking about how this much maligned “little team that could” had written the almost perfect final chapter in the history of the first phase of the program. After all, no one had taken very seriously a team from CC at that regional tournament at Alma College all those years earlier.

In 2006 when Barb and I decided that retirement would be best lived in a sunny and warm clime, I felt there was one final team related task incumbent upon me. The hardware we had won in national competitions had to be disassembled and crated for reassembly in its new home in Nevada. Still with me, the trophies serve as a reminder of all I derived from my association with the young men who had originally hoisted them. Indeed, I am both pleased and grateful that several former players have visited us when their travels brought them to the desert.

In retirement, I have busied myself working on the house, learning about desert landscaping, traveling around the continent to visit relatives or watch Indy car races, reading my way through the stack of books that accumulated in more hectic years and, of course, vicariously coaching the Toronto Maple Leafs through their NHL schedule. Alas, the competitive success of the Leafs in recent years cannot begin to compare with the record compiled by the CC teams that I coached.

Indeed, those years of coaching are remembered as a happy if frenetic chapter in my life.

Where Are They Now? Mr. Howard Weinberg has retired with his wife, Barbara, to Henderson, Nevada and is still interested in fast cars. Back at the time of the first Quiz Bowl State championship, Mr. Weinberg joked (we think) that since it was an academic accomplishment the school should celebrate by adding a school day rather than by dropping one. There is no record of whether that was done in 1988, but this year, when the team scored highest in the KMO competition, the school got a day off on February 4 after the team was honored at a Quiz Bowl assembly to acknowledge the multifaceted victories accumulated over the years.

Mr. Jones has retired from teaching and is currently following a career in law.

**KMO and NAQT are the two main sources of questions used for Quiz Bowl competitions. The distinctions between these two organizations are complex perhaps because academic competition is still a relatively new and developing phenomenon. They are too complex to include in this salute to our Quiz Bowl teams. However, Mr. Weinberg has written a short summary of the main points to consider when evaluating the relative importance of tournaments.

Theme for 2013: “Animal Planet”

The Drive Results The annual Student Ticket DRIVE is an annual event that is synonymous with school spirit at Catholic Central. Each year, students sell raffle tickets and collect money for tuition assistance. The seven school days that make up “DRIVE week” are comprised of half days and assemblies that promote school spirit and competition amongst the students, faculty and staff.

The theme for this year was “Animal Planet.” Each homeroom selected an animal as its mascot and decorated their homerooms and hallways accordingly. The freshmen had farm animals, the sophomores had animals of the Savannah, the juniors had animals from under the sea, and seniors had jungle animals. The decorations were outstanding.

The creativity of our students was obvious. The videos, entertainment and various shenanigans that filled the week were most enjoyable.

When it was all said and done, this year’s DRIVE broke all previous records. The total amount brought in reached a staggering $511,647.13! That money will go directly to tuition assistance for next year’s students. Fr. Huber made it clear to the students that, because of their efforts, many families will be able to receive much-needed financial support toward tuition. Fr. Huber also rewarded the students with 13 DRIVE holidays.

On Wednesday, February 6, 2013, National Signing Day, fifteen senior student-athletes signed Letters of Intent, formally committing to continue their academic and athletic careers at their respective colleges and universities.

The science department has made several curriculum advances in the past year.

Next year, College Prep (CP) Physics and Academic Physics will also be digital, also designed by the CC science staff. This digital curriculum should not be confused with digital textbooks. This curriculum is primary and secondary source information complete with animations, blogs, podcasts, MP3 downloads, interactive websites and other media sources used by today’s students. The information is linked directly to the media center and all of the information contained within. Students have 24/7 access 365 days a year. The science staff has complete control as to content and format for delivery as well.

The Robotics team won the Judges Award at the Birmingham tournament in November.

There were 72 science fair projects entered into the CC science fair this year. AP Biology students were required to do a science fair project as well.

The annual spring backpacking trip will take place this May 10th-12th. This year’s adventure will involve both kayaking and backpacking.

Student ART Matt Solarz ’13 created his artwork in Mrs. Gail Levens’ Photoshop class. The artwork is going to be included in the Art Show this year. Matt is one of our National Merit Semifinalists.

Over 100 CC students competed in a poster contest for the Novi Civic Theater. The posters were narrowed down to six, and Connor Byrne ’14 won the competition with his poster for “The Wizard of Oz.” The City of Novi was so impressed that all six posters will be used for advertising their upcoming play, “The Wizard of Oz.” Connor’s will be the main poster for the production.

LINCOLN is coming to catholic central high school September 2, 2015 through October 16, 2015 We are happy to announce that Detroit Catholic Central High School has been awarded the privilege of hosting Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War, a traveling exhibit organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office and made possible by the National Endowment for the Humanities.

This 1,000 square foot traveling display, using the U.S. Constitution as its cohesive thread, offers a fresh and innovative perspective on the Civil War that brings into focus the constitutional crises at the heart of this great conflict.

Abraham Lincoln was elected the sixteenth President of the United States in 1860, at a time when the nation was falling apart. By the time he took the oath of office, seven states had already seceded from the Union. The exhibition vividly evokes Lincoln’s struggle to resolve the basic questions that divided Americans at the most perilous moment in the nation’s history: Was the United States truly one nation, or was it a confederacy of sovereign and separate states? How could a country founded on the belief that “all men are created equal” tolerate slavery?

Masquerade for Mott We were blessed to host the second annual “Masquerade for Mott” basketball game on Tuesday, February 12, 2012, against Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard. The event was a great success.

Our Shamrocks ended up losing the contest, but the class and spirit shown at the game made it a victory for both teams/ schools. Students from both schools raised a total of $5,000 for The Child and Family Life Department of Mott Children’s Hospital.

Catholic Central Welcomes New Faculty Garrett Chapel was born in Peoria, Illinois, and has a younger brother, TJ, and a younger sister, Chloe. Due to his father’s job transfer, he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, at a young age. There, he attended grade school, middle school and high school. In high school, he participated in wrestling, football, baseball and swimming, and graduated in 2005. After high school, he attended Hillsdale College where he played linebacker on the Hillsdale Charger Football Team for four years. He graduated from Hillsdale College in 2010 earning a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Physical Education and a minor in Biology. He moved to Naples, Florida, after graduating from Hillsdale College to work as a graduate assistant football coach at Ave Maria University. In addition to participating in the development of Ave Maria’s first football team, he also enrolled in Ave Maria’s Master of Theological Studies program.

He will complete his Master’s degree in May 2013. In April 2012, he moved back to Michigan after accepting his ideal teaching job at Catholic Central. In May 2012, he married Meredith Gatt (daughter of Mike ’82 and Maureen and sister of Nickolas ’09, Mitchell ’11 and Carson ’14) whom he met at Hillsdale College. They now live in Livonia and are expecting their first child this April.

Tiffany Doll is the new English teacher at Catholic Central.

Tiffany was born in Minnesota but was raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She graduated from Northern Michigan University Magna Cum Laude with a Secondary Education English major and a minor in Mathematics. Tiffany first started teaching at a charter school in Gilbert, Arizona, where she spent two years teaching both English and Mathematics. She and her husband, Luke, then moved to Michigan where she spent one year as a nanny. Mrs. Doll worked for Covenant House Academies until she was hired at Catholic Central in the fall of 2012. Tiffany and her husband have two cats, a tabby and a calico, and recently bought their first house.

Rich Fischer is a graduate of Wayne State University where he earned both his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Art Education. He has been awarded a Gold Medal by the National Scholastics Art and 38

Writing Competition in New York for Outstanding Work as a Visual Arts Instructor and has had the privilege of mentoring hundreds of student winners in the same competition. After teaching Fine and Visual Art at Bishop Foley Catholic High School in Madison Heights for 14 years, he decided to make a career change and came to Catholic Central. In his short time here, he has already found himself feeling at home and excited to share in the great culture of his Shamrock brothers. The proud father of two young boys, Cameron and Cole, Rich enjoys spending his time playing catch, soccer, and camping with his sons. They are his life.

He has run innumerable 5K and 10K races, completed the Crim 10 Mile race in Flint eight times, run two half marathons, and competed in the Warrior Dash race in Mt. Morris. He also continues to coach Varsity Cross Country at his former high school. Besides running and spending time with his sons, Rich enjoys movies, music and doing carpentry projects. Looking into the future, he plans to begin teaching a filmmaking course at CC and creating a Student Film Festival to showcase the talents of his future students. Mr. Fischer is thrilled to be a part of the outstanding Fine Arts Department at CC and looks forward to a promising future working with Mr. Dent, Mr. Fugedi and Mrs. Fanning. The secret to success in Mr. Fischer’s classes … be respectful, be open-minded, work hard, and know your movie trivia.

Nick Fugedi is a 2003 graduate of Detroit Catholic Central and is very grateful to be working at his alma mater. It was at CC, that a young Mr. Dent and Nick had a conversation in which Nick decided that he wanted to pursue a career in teaching art. Nick attended Western Michigan University and, in 2008, received his BFA in Art Education. Following graduation, he decided to take some time to travel and moved to Hawaii for a year. Mr. Fugedi’s first teaching assignment was in 2011-2012 at West Village Academy in Dearborn. Nick would like to thank Mrs. Jane Beaudoin, a former Art Teacher at CC, for her constant guidance and expertise as he transitions into this new position.

Cecilia Hernandez-Winchell is the new Latin and Spanish teacher at CC.

Kelly Kolchuk is the new Library Technical Assistant in the Media Center. A native of western New York, she attended the University of Buffalo where she received her B.A. in Psychology and her Master’s in Library Science. Kelly and her husband, Chris, moved to Michigan 10 years ago at which time Kelly began working at the Novi Public Library. Beginning as a youth and teen librarian, she eventually reached the status of the Head of Information Services where she supervised the Adult, Youth and Teen departments. Throughout her 16-year career, Kelly has always enjoyed working with the youth and teen population. After becoming a mother to sons Tyler and Aiden, she gained even more perspective on the importance of libraries in the lives of our young people. She was honored to be selected for the Library Technical Assistant position knowing the reputation of Detroit Catholic Central. Her husband, a Rochester, New York, Aquinas Institute graduate spoke so highly of his experience at that Basilian Father’s school that Kelly welcomed the opportunity to be part of that tradition here in Michigan.

Caitlin O’Connell is a new Science teacher at CC. She is a graduate of the STEP program at Oakland University where she obtained a B.S. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. She comes to Catholic Central after three years of teaching Physical Science, Chemistry, Biology, and Anatomy at Detroit Cristo Rey High School located in Southwest Detroit. Detroit Cristo Rey is also a Basilian-sponsored school. It uses a work-study program to assist students with tuition. Instead of being in the classroom every day, one day a week her students went off to work at actual jobs in businesses, law firms, and even hospitals. Caitlin grew up in Southfield and attended Our Lady Queen of Martyrs and Marian High School. Despite attending high school next to the boys in orange, Caitlin is excited to be a Shamrock and looks forward to many years of teaching the men of Catholic Central.

Amanda O’Neill is the new Business Teacher at CC. Amanda is a graduate of Wayne State University where she studied Marketing and History. She studied for her Masters Degree in the field of Educational Media and Technology at Eastern Michigan University. Ms. O’Neill taught in area public schools for six years before finding a home at Catholic Central.

Gregory Prais is the new French and Spanish teacher at Catholic Central. He is a graduate from Wayne State University where he was an Academic All-American swimmer.

He has been teaching French and Spanish for over 15 years. Before coming to Catholic Central, he most recently taught at Detroit Country Day School. While there, he not only taught languages, but coached both the Boy’s Middle School and J.V. tennis teams, Women’s Varsity Swimming and he was the Head Men’s Varsity Bowling Coach. He also has experience working with all ages and abilities having instructed tennis at Oakhurst Country Club and Bloomfield Tennis. Greg is also a certified personal trainer and group fitness instructor. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Bob Salter is one of two new Theology teachers and “loves” being part of the “CC family.”

Though new to Catholic Central, Bob previously taught with several current faculty members at Bishop Borgess High School, where he spent 13 years teaching religion, working on their ministry team and coaching girls track. He has spent the last 25 years working in the Human Resources field for such companies as Educational Data Systems, J&L Specialty Steel, Henry Ford Health System, and GCI Global Healthcare Solutions. He was on the Board of the Detroit Human Resource Association. Bob has a Master’s in Theological Studies from St. John’s Seminary and a Master’s in Organizational Development from Eastern Michigan University. He completed his undergraduate studies at Sacred Heart Seminary. Bob is married to Christine (also a former Bishop Borgess teacher). They live in a historical home in Dearborn and attend St. Anselm parish in Dearborn Heights.

Marylou Swindall is our new Learning Coach, in the Learning Strategies Center, which is new to Catholic Central this year. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree from Madonna University and her Master’s degree in Education from the University of Phoenix.

She has taught in Detroit and Redford Union School districts. She has worked with a variety of students with unique needs and has taught them the tools they need to be successful in school. Marylou and her husband, Jay, reside in South Lyon and have two boys. Blake is in 7th grade, and Brock is in 5th grade. She stays very busy with the boys; they both play travel hockey, so a lot of her spare time is spent at the hockey rinks. She is very excited and blessed to be a part of the Catholic Central community.

In keeping with CC’s motto of “Teach Me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge,” Mrs. Swindall’s goal for the Learning Strategies Center is to continue to strive for success while assisting students in their learning endeavors.

Career Guidance Talks Each year, the Career Guidance Committee of the Alumni Association, in collaboration with Ms. Shawn Mather and the CC Guidance Department, arranges for many alumni to come and speak with interested sophomores about different career paths and opportunities for them to pursue after their time at Catholic Central. These career fields range from Entrepreneurship and Communications to Medicine and Engineering.

The first of these talks was on January 23, 2013. Drew Sharp ’78, a sports columnist for the Detroit Free Press and newly-published author, spoke to the students about a career in communications and journalism. He spoke about his beginnings at CC and his renowned career as a sports writer. He also spoke in depth about the process of writing his first book.

The second career talk was on February 5, 2013. Drs. Bob Forte ’69 and Steve Antone ’93 spoke to the students about a career in medicine. Dr. Forte is a member of both the Alumni Association Board and School Board of Directors and is an accomplished surgeon. Dr. Antone is a pediatrician. They spoke about their educational backgrounds through CC, undergraduate studies and Med school.

The third career talk was on March 6, 2013. Denny Barnes ’79 and Chuck Bullock ’87 spoke to the students about a career in law. Denny’s practice deals primarily with business and commercial litigation, and Chuck’s practice handles bankruptcy matters. Both Denny and Chuck stressed to the students that a well-rounded education is important and must be taken seriously, not only when they move on to college, but during their years at CC as well. They covered many different areas of the legal profession and some of the opportunities available to them because of their CC affiliation.

The fourth career talk was on March 13, 2013. Bob Paul ’80, the CEO of Compuware, spoke to the students about the relevance and importance of Information Technology (IT) in today’s world.

He explained how most familiar businesses incorporate IT in their strategies for success. He also gave the students some educational suggestions for their college plans and future career choices.

The fifth career talk was on March 20, 2013. Mike Dewan ’85 spoke to the sophomore students about a career in business and entrepreneurship. He spoke about his business endeavors and how to be successful, one can never give up!

Keeping Up with Catholic Central Athletes

Basketball The Varsity Basketball Team endured a difficult season after experiencing last year’s great success.

With only a few returning seniors, the Shamrocks Nick Malzone ’13 struggled throughout a grueling Catholic League season. Led

by Head Coach Bill Dyer and assistants John Fenbert and Rob Fragoso ’05, the team lost in the semifinals of the Catholic League playoffs and ended their season against Plymouth in the District Round of the MHSAA postseason.

Bordercross Club Bordercross has been a club sport at Catholic Central since 2010-2011. The team competes in the Mt. Brighton League of the Michigan High School Snowboard Association (MHSSA). The 2012-2013 season came to an end with the State Championships which were held on February 8, 2013, at Alpine Valley in White Lake. Catholic Central finished in 5th place as a team and also celebrated the program’s first Individual State Champion, Kyle McGorisk ’14. Congratulations to Kyle and to the entire team as they continue to bring honor to CC.

Bowling The Varsity Bowling Team, led by Coach Al Bridges ’71, competed throughout the season with a very young team.

Nonetheless, the team finished second in the league standings and was the #2 seed in the Catholic League finals.

Unfortunately, they lost in the semifinals of the tournament. In MHSAA postseason play, the Shamrock Bowlers finished second in the Regional and lost to Muskegon Mona Shores in the quarterfinals at the State Finals at Northway Lanes in Muskegon.

by Coach Shannon Dunworth, continues to grow in numbers and improve each season. The Shamrocks finished the season by placing 5th at the State Finals in Holland, one place better than last season.

The 5th Place finish is the highest finish for the Shamrocks in the last decade and the second-highest finish in school history (4th in 2001)! The team also finished 2nd at the Catholic League Championship, 3rd at the Oakland County Championship and 3rd and the Schack Invitational.

Hockey - State Finalist The Varsity Hockey Team completed a fantastic season under the leadership of Head Coach, Todd Johnson ’87.

The Shamrocks finished second in the MIHL North Division behind Division 3 State Champion Cranbrook. In Catholic League play, the team just missed out on playing for the championship at Joe Louis Arena. With a final record of 22-8, the Shamrocks lost to Brighton 2-1 in the State Championship.

Skiing The Varsity Ski Team, led by longtime head coach, Tom Gable, finished 3rd in overall League standings with a 4-2 record 42

Wrestling - 2013 Division 1 State Champions - 18th in the Nation!

The Varsity Wrestling Team, led by Mitch Hancock ’00, and captains, Mike Babicz ’13, Ken Bade ’13 and Bob Coe ’13, successfully defended its 2012 state title and earned back-to-back State Championships by defeating the Davison Cardinals in dramatic fashion in the state finals at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.

Junior All-Stater Evan Toth secured the victory over Davison with a last-minute pin in the final bout of the dual. The Shamrocks, ranked #1 all season long, finished the season with an overall record of 25-3 and a national ranking of 18th from InterMat Wrestling. The team’s only losses came to teams ranked higher in the nation: St. Edward from Ohio, Montini Catholic from Illinois and St. Johns from Michigan. The Shamrock grapplers also qualified 12 wrestlers for the Individual State Finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Eight wrestlers walked away with All-State honors, including a school-record four State Champions: Malik Amine ’14, threetime champ Ken Bade ’13, Bob Coe ’13 and two-time champ Drew Garcia ’14.
