A Message from the President Dear Alumni and Friends, Last fall we completed the five-year evaluation cycle required by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges for continued accreditation. One of the most gratifying commendations that this group of mostly non-Catholic educators gave us was that, unlike many Catholic Schools that only have the name on the building and the cross on the wall, they found evidence of the centrality of the Catholic faith in every aspect of Catholic Central’s program. Faith permeates our instruction, our athletics, our counseling and, of course, our alumni. This year’s Florida Reunion will begin with a Mass requested by the alumni.

Ours is a sacramental faith, outward signs of an inward reality.

Alumni will remember Fr. Ned Donoher leading his class in the Rosary. They will remember the Sodality, the Altar Servers, Search Retreats, school and class Masses and the prayer before Our Lady before the big game. Today, some of those forms have changed. The Masses are still there, and with our larger Chapel, we can now have full grade Masses and lunch time devotions throughout the year. Now it’s Kairos retreats as well as the day-long retreat for everyone. It’s required community service hours, crosses on the back of every wrestling uniform, the Brothers’ Club and Right-to-Life trips. The daily Mass before school has taken on more of a community aspect with students, teachers and parents and even neighbors joining at 7:30 am.

As you will see in this issue of the Aluminator, the spiritual life is thriving at school and with our alumni. Perhaps that might be the reason there is renewed interest in the Priesthood.

Since its inception, Catholic Central has been a project of the Basilian Fathers, a small community of mostly educators centered around Christ and the common life and doing the work of evangelization through education. My personal Basilian experience began as a high school freshman in 1958. It has extended through college, advanced degrees and service in Basilian schools ever since. One would think I might have seen all there was to see, but I recently found out the story is not yet over.

In January, our Superior General came to see me (that itself was something that never happened before), to say that he had a new job for me. He has appointed me Secretary/Treasurer General of the Basilian Community as of July 1, 2012.

When the Superior General comes and says he has a job for you, the vow of obedience says you do it. I didn’t seek this job, but I think I will find it a challenge in the best sense. It does, however, mean that I can no longer be President of Catholic Central, a job I thought I would have until retirement. That is the sad part because being at Catholic Central for the past twelve years has been a real blessing. I ask your prayers both for me and for the local Basilian community that will now begin the process of naming the next President of Catholic Central.

The support of the alumni has been one of the most gratifying parts of this job, and I thank each one of you who have helped in any way. We’ll keep you informed as the process of naming my successor moves forward. In July, I’ll be moving to Toronto for the duration of the appointment, but I assure you, you haven’t seen the last of me!

CHATTERBOX Staying Connected With Your Classmates THE NIFTY ’50s 1959 – DENNIS SPALLA had the privilege of watching several CC hockey players in a unique high school Hockey Showcase held in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

There were eight teams, including two from Michigan, two from Minnesota, two from New England, and two from global entries and players from as far away as Russia, Latvia, Norway, Sweden, Quebec, New Brunswick, and Finland. There were almost as many college coaches and professional scouts in attendance as there were players. Dennis wrote: “Let me tell you how proud I was of the players from CC. Nolan Gluchowski ’12, Charlie Green ’13, Michael Babcock ’13, Tyler Van Norman ’12, Peter Halash ’12, Steven Haydon ’12, Carson Gatt ’14 played very well, and stood out among the top players in the world at that event. It was very rewarding to see their dedication and focus, their leadership and discipline, and their unselfish teamwork.

They conducted themselves well, and they showcased all the values you would want our students and athletes to live, on and off the ice. If a coach was looking for talent and character and grit, they could have selected our CC players in all categories.

Congratulations to those Shamrocks and to the school and students they represented.”

THE PSYCHEDELIC ’60s 1961 – ROBERT E. MARAKA has been doing some writing during his retirement, including “Pray for Today,” published by Zulon Press and available on-line through Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble.

1974 – PAUL NOETZEL received a promotion to Director of Asset Services for the central Texas region of CBRE, Inc., which includes an approximately eleven million square foot real estate management portfolio in Austin, San Antonio, and El Paso.

“This is a much deserved promotion,” said Rob Roy, CBRE’s Senior Managing Director for Asset Services for the South Central U.S. region. “Paul has been a key team member in our Austin group for six years and has played a vital role in CBRE’s growth in the local market.”

Paul offers 25 years of management experience in commercial real estate.

He joined CBRE in 2006 as part of the Trammell Crow Company merger. He was previously employed with Lincoln Property Company as the Director of Property Management, where he oversaw the property management team and was responsible for the 100 Congress Building and Las Cimas properties. Prior to moving to Lincoln, Paul was the Senior Portfolio Manager with Kucera Management responsible for management of an over 600,000 square foot portfolio.

CBRE Group, Inc. (NYSE:CBG), a Fortune 500 and S&P 500 company headquartered in Los Angeles, is the world’s largest commercial real estate services firm (in terms of 2010 revenue).

1976 – BISHOP MICHAEL BYRNES celebrated Mass at St. Therese of Liseaux Parish in Shelby Township to install the new pastor. Some CC alumni were in attendance.

1967 – JACK RAJKOVICH is back in the classroom! He is teaching at St. Catherine of Sienna Academy in the school’s second year. Jack is a longtime member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.

1977 – BILL PARRAN, Whelan Award winner in 1977, bowled his first-ever 300 game on November 15, 2011, at Woodland Lanes in Livonia. Ironically, Woodland Lanes is home to the CC Bowling Team.

THE TECHNO ’80s 1980 – TOM GRACE has written his sixth novel which was published last month, an election thriller entitled The Liberty Intrigue. The Liberty Intrigue is a departure from his previous five novels, which are all part of the Nolan Kilkenny series of spy thrillers. In this novel, a brilliant engineer from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula runs against a very progressive incumbent in a race for the presidency. To win the White House, Ross Egan must mount the most unorthodox presidential campaign ever attempted and navigate through a daunting new world marked by character assassination, high-level corruption, armed raids, and political murder. [This was probably written before super pacs, or that too would have been included.] As part of the launch week for The Liberty Intrigue, Tom was scheduled to speak at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC, a prominent conservative lobby. THE HAPPENING ’90s 1993 – MAJ. TIM KNOTH, U.S.A. and his son, Evan, visited the school on Friday, January 6, 2012, and toured the “new” building for the first time. Tim reconnected with classmate Aaron Babicz ’93 and former homeroom teacher, Tony Magni, as well as others.

Tim is currently a Major in the U.S. Army, and he and his family live in Colorado.

1983 – FRANK FIREK is the president of Myco Enterprises, Inc., a supplier of high volume, fabricated steel components.

They recently moved their offices from Novi to Southfield to upgrade their office space and to be closer to their customer base. Last summer, in an effort to find motivation to keep in shape, he set an unreasonable goal of doing a triathlon; yet, he actually completed three sprintdistance triathlon races here in the Detroit area. The combination of mixing up your workouts with three sports has been fun, and the exhilaration of crossing the finish line is addicting. Frank is targeting a 1/2-Ironman for this coming summer. He and his wife, Amy, have two boys, ages 2 and 6, and they are expecting a third child this summer.

“CC is truly the best place around. My time there was marked by the best years of my youth and being back amongst the brothers in the new building, with Evan by my side, meant the world to me. It is an experience that neither he nor I will soon forget. He has had all of his gear on all weekend since our visit. He loved it!

1993 – MIKE MITTMAN and four other CC Alums get together every year in Hell, Michigan, for the annual Dances with Dirt Relay. This year was no different. Declan O’Donohue ’92, Brandon Dalziel ’93 and Eric McKeon ’93 joined Mike this year, while Mike Dorrington ’93 was unable to attend. Mike, Declan, Brandon, Eric and Mike all ran track and cross country at CC. Brandon

Dalziel and Eric McKeon were on the 1992 State Champion 4x800 Relay Team, and Mike Mittman was a 1992 Individual State Champion in Cross Country.

1993 – JAMES SHANNON earned his Masters Degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan-Dearborn on December 18, 2010. Prior to the commencement ceremonies, Shannon was selected to be the student speaker to address the graduates. Jim submitted several letters of recommendation from professors within UM-Dearborn’s College of Business, as well as professional colleagues with significant ties to the University.

“I had tossed the idea around as something that would be nice to be a part of, and encouragement from my classmates within the MBA program really sealed the deal to make the most of my application.” Before the graduation ceremony, Jim, his wife, Emily, and his daughters enjoyed a reception with UM-Dearborn Chancellor Daniel Little at the Henry Ford Estate. Also in attendance were Chancellor’s Medallion winners, undergraduates recognized for high scholarship and outstanding achievement in and out of the classroom.

“It was exciting to be in attendance at that luncheon and to underscore to my daughters the continued importance of lifelong learning.”

Along with that emphasis on lifelong learning, (Jim also earned his BA from UM-Dearborn in 1998) Shannon’s speech highlighted Henry Ford, on whose former estate UM-Dearborn is established, the University’s Metropolitan Vision, and UM-Dearborn’s importance within the entire University of Michigan community.

“It was an immense honor to be selected to represent my class that day and share this achievement with my family and friends. It’s their support which made the accomplishment that much more memorable.” Jim currently resides in Allen Park with his wife of ten years, Emily, and his daughters, Madelynn and Meredith. He works for Sprint Nextel Corporation where he is the Midwest Region Sales Operations Manager.

1996 – RICHARD O. FREIJ, M.D. graduated from the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.

He is now a resident in the University of Pittsburgh Department of Pathology.

1996 – REV. CLINT McDONELL, who was most recently at Divine Child Parish in Dearborn, was assigned to Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He is studying for his Masters and Doctorate in Philosophy. He will be there approximately five years. Fr. Clint has also been helping out at two nearby parishes and tutoring a seminarian in Latin.

1996 – JOHN SPOLSKY was honored posthumously with the “Commitment to Excellence Award” from St. Robert Bellarmine Parish on February 12, 2012. The award is given “for their faith, character, academic, and tremendous athletic accomplishments.” John shared the award with Mike Martin ’08.

THE VIRTUAL ’00s 2003 – ANDREW EGGERT graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame. He was a valedictorian candidate at Notre Dame and was the recipient of the Hamilton Award for the highest grade point in Finance. Andrew also played hockey at Notre Dame.

He is now an associate with Madison Dearborn, a private investment firm in Chicago, Illinois. He plans to pursue his MBA in September 2012.

Their season ended (20-12-6) in an overtime loss (2-1) to No. 1 seeded Yale in the NCAA East Regional. The Falcons were ranked 18th in the Nation.

2009 – EVAN MALECKE and 2011 – MICHAEL TOLKACZ were named co-Most Improved Players for the Albion Men’s Soccer Team. In addition, Evan was named one of the captains for next fall’s team.

2009 – TONY THOMAS, who plays hockey for the Air Force Academy, was named “Rookie of the Week” twice during last season and scored 7 goals and had 10 assists. He played in every game last season for the Falcons. His team, the Air Force Falcons, won the AHA Tournament and advanced to the NCAA tournament

THE CONNECTED ’10s 2010 – BRANDON HESS scored the winning goal in double overtime to lead the Madonna University Soccer Team over Brandon Hess ’10 Aquinas College to win the WolverineHoosier Athletic Conference Tournament Championship. Winning the conference championship allowed the Crusaders to advance to the NAIA Tournament for the first time since 2008. Their season ended in the opening round.

2010 – RYAN OBUCHOWSKI is currently a defenseman and team captain for the Indiana Ice of the Ryan Obuchowski ’10 USHL. Ryan has thrived this season.

As of February 21, 2012, he was leading all United States Hockey League defensemen with 24 assists and had also scored five goals.

Ryan was a member of the 2009 & 2010 State Champion Hockey Teams at CC.

Getting To Know Alumni Association Members

Young Alumni Profile: Soccer Americans Abroad: Gatt set for big stage, Dempsey matches McBride

by Avi Creditor from www.si.com on October 31, 2011 Josh Gatt ‘10 wasn’t on the field as his team cemented a monumental achievement, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be able to reap the benefits of his club’s first league championship.

Gatt’s Molde FK played to a draw over the weekend, and that, combined with Josh Gatt ‘10 was part of a titleBrann’s victory over winning team in his first season in Rosenborg, ensured that the Norway. injured American’s team will win the league championship in Norway’s top flight and secure the 20122013 UEFA Champions League berth that goes along with the title.

Coached by former Manchester United striker and reserves coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Gatt thrived in his first professional season in Norway

before suffering a hamstring injury that cut his season short. His pace and technical skill make him a natural flank attacker -- even though he was used on the right wing and at fullback with Molde -- and his dynamic showing this season is evidence of why he’s widely considered to be among the top echelon of U.S. prospects to watch over the coming years.

Barring an unexpected transfer elsewhere, the 20-year-old Gatt will get a chance to compete in the Champions League next summer (Molde, which also employs seldom-used young American left back Sean Cunningham, will enter in the second qualifying round of the tournament), which would be quite the landmark feat in the U.S. under-20 international’s brief career. It would also provide a chance for another American to make some headlines in the competition, following in the semi-recent footsteps of Maurice Edu and DaMarcus Beasley, among others.

As far as some Americans have come in terms of overseas club soccer, the only one currently taking part in the Champions League is Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper David Yelldell, and he’s unlikely to see any minutes in the competition unless current starter Bernd Leno gets injured, suspended or demoted.

Should Gatt compete in the Champions League, he’d hold one of the few distinctions that Clint Dempsey has yet to realize in his prolific career abroad.

And while a transfer to a Champions League club might be in the cards down the line for Dempsey, his list of accomplishments at Fulham continues to grow nevertheless.

Bill Williams ‘45

[Excerpt from Portraits of Service] In the words of eighty-four-year-old Bill Williams ’45: “Toward the end of World War II, as many of us were graduating high school, we would try to enlist in one of the branches of service. With the end of the war obviously near, everyone was being more selective. Since I had injured my knees playing football in high school, I was not accepted. That was a very hard thing to deal with, when so many young men I knew were going.

When Korea came around, I was drafted in September of 1950 and sent to join the 163 MP’s at Fort Custer. I could go home on leave, since it was only a few hours from Detroit. I was placed in a National Guard Unit that had originally been part of the Presidential Honor Guard in Washington, D.C.

The first thing I noticed in Korea was the heat and the smell; they were both awful. I thought it was pretty ironic that the first person I met at the bottom of the gangplank was a guy from my own street in Detroit, Vic Banonis ’46…The next thing I saw was how poor the people were and how dirty everything was.

Korea was quite a stressful place, as any war-plagued country would be.

For example, my company commander, a captain, received a ‘Dear John’ letter from his wife and committed suicide. I was selected to be one of the men in the investigation. It was so sad, and a painful memory for me.

I am proud of the fact that I served my country when I was called upon, and I was able to serve with many excellent men. When I finally got home, I was so excited to be back on U.S. soil that the very first thing I did was kiss the ground.”

When we were sent to Korea, I remember being on a troop ship which was way overloaded – five thousand men on a ship designed for three thousand.

It took about twenty days – we went through a typhoon, ran out of water, and had very little food.

Airman First Class James P. Hoeffel ‘50, U.S. Air Force After Mass, Jim and his fellow altar boys at Our Lady of Sorrows in Farmington had time to listen to Fr. Clemens, C.S.B. talk about the attributes of Catholic Central High School, a Basilian-run school 26 miles away in Detroit.

Jim joined the freshman class in September 1946, at the Belmont location next to Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. He had Fr. Martin, C.S.B., founder of the Boys’ Bowl game, as homeroom teacher. As a junior, Jim had Fr. Clemens for homeroom, and at the beginning of his senior year Fr. Clemens introduced the CC fight song beginning with “Hull-a-ba-loo-kinec-kinec.” Needless to say the song and melody, borrowed from Texas A&M during Fr. Clemens’ year in Houston, was well received by the student body.

The Class of 1950 graduated at the Detroit Institute of Arts on June 11, 1950. North Korea invaded South Korea June 25, 1950. Jim went to work for Chrysler but was laid off toward the end of the summer.

President Truman decreed that 80% of the U.S. steel production would be allocated to U.S. defense.

Jim and his pals decided to join the “new” U.S. Air Force created in 1947. The bases were flooded with recruits, and his entry was delayed until January 6, 1951. Jim was 18 years old.

The new volunteers departed from Fort Wayne in Detroit by steam engine and arrived at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas only to be bussed, due to overcrowding, to Sheppard A.F.B. at Wichita Falls, Texas, for basic training. Upon graduation Jim was assigned to the 647th AC&W Squadron at Fort Meade, Maryland. Jim’s duties included working in Tech supply, and he was promoted to Airman Third Class.

In September Jim volunteered for overseas duty and eventually arrived in Guam and was stationed at Anderson A.F. B., headquarters for the 19th Bomb Wing. Jim pulled a two-year stint in the hot jungle accompanied by giant bugs. His group supported the war effort flying to and over Korea during the War. Eventually the armistice was signed, bringing the end to hostilities, and Jim spent the next year in Tachicawa, Japan. He was a part of FEAMCOM Air Force Base working in logistics for the Far East Air Force.

His responsibilities increased as he now was an Airman First Class.

Jim received an honorable discharge on November 3, 1954, and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal.

On September 26, 1959, Jim married his girlfriend, Betty, in a ceremony at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. Jim and Betty had three children: James Michael Hoeffel ’78, who passed away June 30, 1992; a daughter, Joy Elizabeth Hoeffel; and John Anthony Hoeffel, who attended CC for his freshman year. Starting in 2007, Jim organized and sponsored more than 10 golf outings for active duty military personnel at his own expense.

Jim has remained active with the Korean War Veterans including the Far East Air Force Veterans and the “Graybeards,” a Korean War Veterans Association. Jim is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

On November 11, 2011, Veteran’s Day, Jim returned to Our Lady of Sorrows School, after 65 years, and was honored and recognized for his service. The kids were thrilled to learn that Jim was one of them.

In a letter addressed to Jim and dated June 1, 2010, Lee Myongbak, the President of the Republic of Korea, thanked the U.S. Korean War Veterans for their “selfless sacrifice in fighting tyranny and aggression.” The letter was in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War. It concludes by stating, “Please accept, once again, our warmest gratitude and deepest respect. You will always remain our true heroes and we assure you that we will continue to do our best to make you proud. On behalf of the Korean people, I would like to say ‘Thank You’.”

ALUMNI BUSINESS PROFILE: A Business Reversal Leads to a Successful New Company lawyer collaborated to form a Canadian used car history service based in London, Ontario, called LienQuest.com.

The first thing Joe learned is that the vehicle ownership system in Canada is very different than the U.S. In the U.S., cars have titles, and any liens are typically recorded on the titles in order for them to be valid. In Canada, there are registrations for cars, but not titles; and valid liens are recorded in the registrar’s office of the province where the vehicle was financed. When Joe learned that there were no used car history reports in Canada, like Carfax in the U.S., to provide car dealers with this data, a business idea was created.

In the fall of 2000, Joe, his brother, the dealer from Canada who sold Joe’s brother the tainted vehicles, and that dealer’s Canadian

Today CarProof has become the standard for used vehicle history reports in Canada.

“By 2003 we wondered whether our investment of time and money had been a big waste,” said Luther. “[But] instead of calling it quits, we decided to create a comprehensive used car history report for the Canadian market because there was no such service, and the U.S. competitors showed no interest in making a Canada-specific product.”

In 2005, LienQuest changed its name to CarProof and launched a report that

contained information similar to Carfax in the U.S. but which also included Canadian lien data and exclusive accident data from the Canadian insurance industry.

“When we made the deal to buy the accident data from the insurance industry we took a really big chance, but we also knew we had something special,” said Luther. “The investors were still the main employees of CarProof, but we began to hire a staff to sell our product to the used car industry in Ontario.”

By 2006, all of the dealer auto auctions in Canada were using and promoting CarProof.

With that momentum, CarProof began to have success with the auto manufacturers’ remarketing divisions and eventually with the big car dealer groups. By 2008, CarProof finally posted its first profitable year.

Today CarProof has become the standard for used vehicle history reports in Canada. In 2011, CarProof became the first Canadian company to receive the prestigious “Top 50 Fastest Growing Companies” award from Deloitte Canada in three consecutive years. In February, CarProof received an even greater award when it was named one of Canada’s “Top 50 Best Managed” companies. CarProof now has over 50 employees across Canada.

“Apart from the obvious business success, what I am most proud of about CarProof is how our product has helped to create a sense of transparency in the used car market in Canada,” said Joe Luther. “Some provinces have even enacted regulations which require dealers to disclose data that our reports provide. We are constantly getting customer surveys that thank us for revealing the bad and good news about the history of the used car they were about to buy.”

What started out as a big legal mess for Joe Luther’s brother, ended as a nice business success story for Joe and his business partners. Ironically, one of CarProof’s biggest customers is GMAC of Canada.

Richard Hoeg ‘98 | Thomas Hoeg ’01 ByteSize Games Announces iPhone Title Flipship ByteSize Games, Inc., a Michigan-based startup headed by ex-Insomniac Games developer Thomas Hoeg ’01, released its first game last September. The game is called FlipShip, and it is for iPhone and iOS devices.

Pricing and Availability FlipShip is available from the Apple App Store and through iTunes.

In FlipShip, the player’s goal is deceptively simple: tilt the iPhone to move towards enemies of the same color, then let the ship’s automatic firing function take care of the rest. But that’s not the end of the story.

About ByteSize ByteSize Games, Inc., is the brainchild of Chief Executive Officer Thomas Hoeg, returning to his native state of Michigan to form the two-man operation after working on Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time in sunny Los Angeles for Burbank-based Insomniac Games.

McNish Family Foundation We are all familiar with the motto of the Basilian Fathers and Catholic Central High School: Teach me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge, and we all live our lives trying to aspire to those virtues. There is one among us who lives those virtues every day, especially the virtue of goodness, and that one is Bill McNish ’59.

A tireless and disciplined business man, Bill McNish was inspired to do good by the example of his own father, Samuel McNish, a member of the CC Dads’ Club Executive Board in the 1950’s. Bill has spent his adult life sharing his goodness and good fortune with others. For decades he has supported the youth of our communities through his support of the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) of Detroit.

Founded in 2003, the McNish Family Foundation is run by a Board of Directors lead by President, Mrs. Carol McNish and daughters Christine, Suzanne, Elizabeth and niece Megan Shannon Curoe.

The Foundation has a simple Bill ‘59 and Carol McNish mission: provide individual young people with opportunities that can significantly change their lives. The McNish family believes that each young person can reach extraordinary heights when provided with positive experiences and role models. Some of the experiences supported financially by the Foundation include: • Need-based scholarships to private primary and secondary schools • Need-based scholarships to summer camps and enrichment programs • Need-based access to sports, music and art programs Catholic Central High School is the grateful recipient of one of the need-based scholarships and for the past four years, the McNish Family Foundation has assisted some outstanding young men realize the dream of a CC education. Additionally, the Foundation funds scholarships at Mercy High School, Shrine High School, Loyola High School and Notre Dame Prep.

The funding of these scholarships and programs only happens because of the commitment of the entire McNish family and the support of extended family and friends. Throughout the year, the Foundation organizes a variety of fund-raising activities to support the Foundation. Among the premier events are the self-proclaimed Best Family St. Patrick’s Day Party of the Year and an annual Golf Outing (see left).

The proud patriarch of his family, Bill is the brother of Larry ’62 (dec.), father of Bob, John ’84, Christine and Suzanne and the cousin of Joe Shannon ’77 and Sean Shannon ’79. Bill hopes to see his grandson Jack continue the family legacy by wearing the royal blue and white as a member of the Class of 2019.

The Spirit of CC is alive and well as demonstrated to us by Bill McNish and family. As he has taught his family and friends, Bill’s philosophy is simple, “I want to help those who need help.” Perhaps we could all gain some inspiration from this simple, but profound philosophy.

Dominique Fischer Memorial Foundation Pride, passion, care and compassion words used to describe Dominique Fischer ’05 by his father Kevin Fischer and his brother Christopher Fischer ’08.

Dominique was a special person - full of life and love. A man who cherished his family, his friends, his sports, his music and his alma mater – Detroit Catholic Central High School.

A young man who was enjoying life and the fruits of his hard work in high school as a scholar/athlete at John Carroll University when life suddenly changed, he became haunted by the demons of bi-polar and schizophrenia disorder.

Dominique Fischer ‘05 earned varsity letters in Dominique fought those demons football, basketball, and baseball while at CC. valiantly for the last 3 years of his life, but it was a fight that he would eventually lose in the summer of 2010 when he took his own life. Dominique was a shining light and it is his legacy to help others learn from his life experience and hopefully benefit from those experiences.

It is this legacy that inspired Kevin and Christopher to create the Dominique Fischer ’05 Memorial Foundation. Dominique was a loving, caring, selfless person who loved helping people and would have wanted good works to be done in his name.

In that spirit, the DFMF

aspires to do the following:

George ‘66 and Linda Turek Family Scholarship Fund In December, Catholic Central High School was blessed with a gift of $1,000,000 from George ’66 and Linda Turek.

The gift was given with the instructions that it be invested exclusively in the Endowment Trust Fund and used to create need-based tuition assistance scholarships for young men who have the great desire to attend CC and to achieve, but who do not otherwise have the means to do so. On December 20, 2011, the George ’66 and Linda Turek Family Scholarship Fund was officially established.

George credits much of his success directly to attending CC as a young man. “Two things had a profound impact on me while growing up. Coming from a poor family and attending CC.” Turek said. “In our family I learned quickly that if I wanted something I had to work for it. We had little money. I paid for CC and college by working while I went to school and during the summers. No loans. No family financial support. No vacations.

Spring break meant that I could work more hours.”

CC was blessed with a gift of $1,000,000 from George ’66 and Linda Turek.

“As for attending CC it provides every student with a unique experience but especially for poor kids and I will tell you why.

If I had not gone to CC I would have gone to Redford Union High School where everyone came from similar economic backgrounds. Not much money in Redford Township. Going to CC gave me an opportunity to rub shoulders with rich kids as well as kids that came from less than rich families. In addition, I was in the CC Glee Club when the Fathers Ned and Paul were directors and they took us all over to compete and sing with all kinds of choral groups including some from very wealthy communities like Sacred Heart Girls Academy in Grosse Pointe. And you know what I figured out after meeting all of these rich kids? The only thing that separated me from them was their parents’ wealth.

That was it. Standing on their own two feet they were no better than me.”

That is when I decided that someday I would be very successful.

I would achieve and lead. And that is what happened. But I do not think that would have happened if I had not attended CC and had

a chance to see and mingle with people who lived on the other side of the tracks. Sort of like the story “Sabrina.”

“So now Linda and I are giving back in numerous ways to a number of causes that are near and dear to us. As an example, we recently donated two uniquely designed houses to disabled Veterans who have special needs. CC was right up there on our list and Fr. Elmer has been patiently waiting for me to pull out my checkbook so we gave him an early Christmas present last year.”

“When I attended CC the tuition was $244.00 per year.

It was a lot of money but I was able to pay it myself by working.

Nowadays it is not feasible for a student to pay his entire tuition at CC and that is why we established our scholarship fund. We want to make sure that truly poor kids have a chance to attend CC so they too can have that unique experience including mingling with kids from the wealthy families knowing full well that with hard work and determination they too can grab the brass ring. They too can become achievers, leaders and ultimately share and give back.”

“Linda and I are delighted to establish our scholarship fund and we urge all CC grads to support the CC Endowment Trust. We must give back. CC is a world-class institution which needs our support as the future of America depends on schools the caliber of CC producing leaders and achievers for generations to come.”

Fellow Alumni, The school year is rapidly coming to a close. Many alumni have participated in the activities sponsored by the CC Alumni Association.

We impact alumni and students by demonstrating that our spiritual life and careers affect everyone in a positive way. I would like to thank all of the alumni who worked on committees for making their events meaningful to the people that participated.

The Alumni Association has been doing a great job over the years in addressing the needs of the school and alumni. We are fortunate that a large number of alumni make it a point to give their time and resources to CC. We have had an increase in the number of young alumni helping our organization. Increased participation from young alumni will ensure the success of CC. The best environment for a young man to mature is CC’s “Teach Me Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge” environment.

I am always filled with pride when I see that CC really does create a brotherhood.

Incorporating the true meaning of homecoming, the annual Boys’ Bowl Weekend plays host to the homecoming game and festivities.

Our wish is to have as many alumni as possible come back to CC for the weekend to share in the many festivities. On Friday morning, the annual Boys’ Bowl Assembly begins at 9:30 am. Saturday will now host our first annual All-Classes Homecoming Event. All alumni and their families are invited to gather in the main gymnasium to reunite and celebrate their CC Brotherhood.

This casual event will allow alumni to share fond memories and stories from their days in School and also reconnect about what they’re doing now.

Class of 1946 Reunion In the Winter issue of the Aluminator, we mentioned that the Class of 1946 celebrated their 65th Reunion on October 22, 2011, at the Embassy Suites in Livonia.

Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 and George McCloskey ’46 organized the reunion lunch. Approximately 20 classmates and their wives were in attendance. The class hopes to continue this tradition by meeting once every year.

On Wednesday, December 14, 2011, the guys from ‘656565 held their annual Christmas Happy Hour at Buddy’s Pizza in Farmington Hills.

Mike Harrison ’65 organized the gathering. They were joined

by Fr. John Wheeler, C.S.B. ’57 and Fr. Dick Elmer, C.S.B. ’46.

The Class of 1965 has established a scholarship fund in honor of their classmates.

This reunion, and their many reunions throughout the year, allow them to remain active within the school and supportive of current CC students.

The 5th Annual CC Alumni & Dads’ Club Retreat was held at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center on January 13-15, 2012. The theme of the weekend was “Are we there yet?” which took 16 alumni and Dads’ Club members on a spiritual journey to a deeper relation with God. On the trip we made sure to NOT take the weapons of hurtful attitudes, words or actions. We packed light, leaving our shame, fear, resentment and despair with the Lord. The things we took with us were prayer, generosity and self control. Most importantly, we tried to take an open mind and heart to hear the messages God had for us.

There was no rushing as the weekend allowed plenty of time for God’s love to enter more deeply into our life and heart.

Ultimately, it helped us get closer to our destinations of relationship and holiness.

At Catholic Central, we are very conscious of the reason this school exists. When you walk in the main doors of the school, your focus is immediately drawn to two things—first, the words “Jesus Christ, the reason for Catholic Central” on the archway just over the main doors, and second, the entrance into the school chapel. Knowing that such a focus is placed on recognizing Jesus Christ as the reason for the school, how do we at CC make sure that we put emphasis on the spiritual life of the students?

Theology classes

Student Retreats

Every student at Catholic Central is required to take Theology classes during their time here, but the Campus Ministry department realizes that we have an obligation to educate the whole person – body, mind and soul. We do this by helping our students to know about God through their Theology classes, as well as to know God through retreats, Masses and other forms of prayer incorporated into the school day.

Each year, every student participates in a retreat. These retreats are class retreats, and 30-35 students at a time will be bussed to St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center to take part in the retreat. The theme of the retreats is male spirituality, striving to help our students “know God” by realizing that they can have a personal relationship with Him. In addition to these day retreats, juniors and seniors are given an option to participate in an extended Kairos Retreat. Kairos is Greek for “the Lord’s time.” This retreat is a four-day, three-night retreat, which gives the students more time to fully contemplate the role of God in their lives. [See page 21 for more information on Kairos.]

Morning Mass The focus on spiritual life begins each day, before the school day even begins. Every morning, Mass is celebrated in our Chapel at 7:30 a.m.

Anyone is welcome to join in this celebration, and many students, faculty members, parents, alumni and community members do come to Mass. Sports teams will also attend Mass on game days to pray for God’s blessings as they prepare to compete.

Christian Service

When the first bell rings at 8:00 a.m., we begin the day with a schoolwide prayer. Interested students are invited to lead this prayer over the school’s P.A. system. Beginning each day with prayer enables CC students to put each day into the proper context and to strive to keep their focus on Jesus Christ. Teachers are also encouraged to begin each class period with a prayer, helping to remind the students that we do all things for the glory of God.

Christian Service also plays an important role in the lives of the students at CC. Each year, students are required to complete at least 10 hours of service to the greater community. This requirement challenges the students to get outside the school and work at making a difference in the lives of others. This year, students have helped with vacation bible schools at their parishes, youth sporting camps and summer camps. They have gone on mission trips to locations such as Peru, worked with Habitat for Humanity and volunteered with organizations such as the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and Gleaner’s food bank. At the completion of each service project, the students complete a reflection questionnaire in order to help them better reflect on their service experience.

School-wide Mass

Theological Seminar

Once a month, the CC Community gathers to celebrate a schoolwide Mass. This Mass is a chance for the students, faculty and staff to come together in worship and give thanks to God for His many blessings. Students are encouraged to participate in these schoolwide liturgies by serving as altar servers, lectors, gift bearers, musicians and Eucharistic ministers. In addition to monthly school Masses, each grade level gathers once a semester in the chapel during their homeroom period for a class Mass or prayer service.

In addition to the written reflection each year, the members of the junior class participate in a theological reflection seminar. This seminar enables the juniors to expand upon what was written in the reflection questionnaire and share with their fellow classmates what they have learned from their Christian Service project about the importance of serving others.

Morning Prayer

Reconciliation The day before we celebrate a school-wide Mass, a period of time is set aside for any interested students to be able to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation. The Basilian Fathers make themselves available at various locations throughout the school to hear the confessions of the students. In addition to this confession period before school Masses, students also have the opportunity to go to confession once a week during their homeroom period.

Brothers’ Club The Catholic Central Brothers’ Club gathers together on the first Tuesday of each month after school in the chapel to pray the rosary.

All students, faculty and staff are welcome to join in this prayer to our mother, Mary.

Vocations The Basilian Fathers of Catholic Central are also encouraging the students to discern vocations to the ordained ministry of the Church and to religious life. Recently, the priests have begun to share their own vocation stories with the theology classes, giving the students some insight into the struggles they have faced in their faith journeys and showing the students living examples of a life of holiness in the midst of a very secular world.

These are just some of the many good things that are occurring in the spiritual lives of the students at CC. We know that by educating the whole person we are helping our students to become the next generation of leaders in our society. It is our hope that they will take what they have learned about their spiritual life while at CC and use that knowledge to continue to grow in a relationship with Jesus Christ long after they have graduated from high school.

asilian Prayer and Spirituality

[The spirituality of Catholic Central is derived and nurtured from the spirituality of the Basilian Fathers who founded it and continue to work with it. The following is a short excerpt from the webpage of the Basilian Fathers concerning Basilian spirituality.]

Unlike other religious communities, the Basilians do not have a founder on which to base a spirituality. This demands an astute attention to the Gospel as the focus of our lives. Basilians commit their lives to prayer, in private, in community and in the work of the apostolate. As a community, our lives are centered around the Eucharist. The rhythm of our day is supported by the Liturgy of the Hours held in common as well as the spiritual exercises and meditation adopted for one’s personal prayer. … Because the Basilians were founded by ten diocesan priests who came together out of necessity during the French revolution, our spirituality finds its life in both the work of the apostolate and the love of God experienced in the community.

While it is true that Basilians are named after St. Basil the Great, he is not our founder. Over the years, Basilians have looked to St. Basil as an example of goodness, discipline and knowledge just as we have looked to the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. John Bosco, our other patrons. … Like so many characteristics of the Basilians, prayer styles and spiritualities seem to span across a variety of disciplines. … All Basilians support each other and those with whom they work continually to look to God in contemplation as the source of our love, wisdom and joy. In this way, the late Cardinal Flahiff, a Basilian, wrote: How shall the priest do this unless he himself is moved constantly and profoundly by a supernatural spirit, unless in other words, he is truly holy? … It is the latter which permits the power of God to come through and transform an otherwise human action into one that is truly divine.

In practice, Basilian spirituality is much like that which is found in the Book of Sirach, for we believe that all aspects of life can lead a person to God. This is why we are not just teachers of religion, but of all disciplines whether they be languages, sciences, humanities, athletics, etc...

Each of these, when used out of love and for the betterment of our community, convey the love of God for the world. Thus, Basilians believe that spirituality is not limited to our churches and theological discourse, but lived out in every thought that manifests itself in the world.

Kairos Retreats By: Steven Huber

Walking down the halls of CC this past November, perhaps you would have heard several of the juniors and seniors talking about the Kairos Retreat they just completed. What is Kairos, and why are our students so excited about it?

The Kairos program at CC was started in 2009.

That summer, Kevin Walters, the Campus Minister at CC, and six students (Dylan Hagan ’10, Matt Nicholas ’10, K.C. Perlberg ’10, Chris Schrimscher ’10, Bret Shrader ’10 and John Vinton ’11) joined students from U of D Jesuit High to participate in the Kairos retreat in Oxley, Ontario, Canada. That November, Mr. Walters and the six student leaders, along with adult leaders Tom Leonard, Bob Ryan, Tony Signorelli and Fr. Jeff Thompson, C.S.B., led the first Catholic Central Kairos Retreat.

Kairos is a Greek word meaning “the Lord’s time.”

The Kairos Retreat is a four-day, three-night retreat which strives to help the students know and experience Christ more fully, not just at Mass, or through the other sacraments, but in every aspect of their lives. Much of the retreat is centered on the retreat team’s sharing of their own experiences and their own struggles to know Christ better. Because of this, students are asked to keep confidential much of what is discussed in the talks and groupsharing sessions. The impact that this retreat has on the students is very evident. Many of them describe it as a “life-changing” experience. Here are some of the many reactions to Kairos that we have received from the students.

“I had an amazing time with the Kairos experience.

I went in with high expectations and an open mind.

It blew me away. It was one of the best weekends of my life, and it really opened me up to God.” Sean Kageff ’13 The Kairos Retreat was, no doubt, one of the best experiences of my life. I feel like I learned a lot about myself and God. I was also able to feel comfortable and able to open up to those around me.” Bill Clark ’13 “My overall thoughts regarding my retreat experience is it was incredible and life-changing. Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge ~- 50 Years Later [The following is an excerpt of a review submitted to Fred Lauck of his recently-published book. We have included it in this issue, not only because it is a response to the book we advertised last time, but also because it expresses, from the point of view of an alumnus, the main theme of this issue. It speaks of the effect of Basilian spirituality on the long-term personal development of CC students. – Ed.]

To: Fred Lauck ‘61 RE: Children of the Greatest Generation … An Emotional History Thank you for writing such a powerful book. Since reading your book, I have spent more time thinking about who I am and how I got here. Here’s my book report.

The Basilians first began an educational cauldron of Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge in Detroit, Michigan in 1928. Later, in our era in the late 1950s, they moved their 30-year-old enterprise to 6565 West Outer Drive. The Basilian no-nonsense passion for excellence continued.

In the fall of 1957, I was among the fortunate, naïve freshmen drawn out of St. Monica Parish. Now, flash forward to graduation day, 1961, as Catholic Central sent forth its latest survivors of four years of Basilian-inspired Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge. My classmates and I shot out of the 6565 West Outer Drive like comets on parallel paths streaking across the sky virtually all embarking on college careers, but some going to the priesthood, some to the military, some to public safety careers and some to blue-collar endeavors.

Time passed, and, along the way, those once parallel comets began to drift apart, pursuing family life and different careers in different geographic areas. Our 1961 comets also found different political paths to express their commitment to the welfare of mankind. Some did so by fighting in Vietnam, others by protesting it. Some were more financially successful in life, others perhaps not as much.

Later, the intensity of those trajectories began to moderate as the comets began to mature. As they did, another pattern began to appear. Those trajectories, once flashing across the sky in apparent random patterns began to come back to parallel. As they did, it became more apparent that the Basilian Fathers had not sent them forth just for the achievement of professional or financial goals. The comets finally came to understand the big-picture mission of the Basilians. It was the spiritual “journey” through life that counted, not the destination.

As I set down these thoughts, the comets are entering the final phase of their passage, while the Basilian Fathers’ unerring mission, captured in the old, well-tested cauldron, continues relentlessly to send forth more and more young men of Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge far better prepared to make a contribution to their fellow man than any of them can possibly understand.

Now, 50 years later, the trajectories of those 1961 Basilian comets are back in almost perfect parallel as they now realize the “relative” importance of academic, athletic or other accomplishments. What were once the source of pride, identity, and reputation have receded and now pale into insignificance. What then is left? What is left is that which binds all Shamrocks in the past and in time yet to come. What is left is the indelible mark -- a brotherhood of the Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge which was forged in us back in 1961. We have fulfilled our duty. We have passed along the franchise no worse than we found it.

And so the journey ends right back where it began. In the final measure all that counts is who we are, not what we have accomplished. And therein, I infer, is the point of my Shamrock classmate Fred Lauck’s excellent book, Children of the Greatest Generation … An Emotional History. I recommend Fred’s book to today’s Catholic Central students. Thanks for the ride, Fred.

Sharing News of Alumni Weddings & Births WEDDING BELLS 1955 – NORBERT KOZLOWSKI and his wife, Kathleen, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary by renewing their vows on September 9, 2011.

Fundraising Theme for 2012: “Cartoons”

The Drive Results The annual student ticket DRIVE was a huge success last February! In a week of no homework, relaxed dress code, no tests and over-the-top school spirit, the students broke almost every record imaginable.

The theme this year was Cartoons. Each homeroom was assigned a cartoon character and decorated their homerooms and hallways accordingly. Prizes were given out for those that did the best job.

The decorations and daily assemblies were full of excitement and spirit while the students continued to sell a record amount of tickets. By the last day, $397,056.13 was raised to go directly to tuition assistance for next year’s students.

CC Principal, Fr. Huber, made it clear to the students that because of their fundraising efforts, many families will be able to receive much-needed financial support toward tuition. Fr. Huber also rewarded the students for their efforts with 12 DRIVE holidays.

The memory of Fr. Donoher lives on in the DRIVE. His passion and enthusiasm for CC was mirrored by the students while they cheered and sang the DRIVE Song each day. And in true Fr. Donoher fashion, the Freshmen finished first, bringing in over $138,000 – 510% of their quota!

Current Events at Catholic Central

Career Guidance Each year, the Career Guidance Committee of the Alumni Association schedules career days where alumni come to discuss their career paths with interested sophomores. This allows interested students to gain insight into their prospective career paths and also ask questions from someone who has succeeded in it. Furthermore, this helps students have an idea of what they want to pursue when they move on to college.

On Wednesday, January 18, Bob Paul ’80, came to CC as part of the Career Guidance Speaker series. He spoke to a group of sophomores about Information Technology and the things necessary to pursue a career in IT. Bob is currently the CEO of Compuware, and he conducted a very intriguing presentation about IT in our world today and how the field will continue to grow. Bob’s son, Brendan ’15, is currently a freshman at CC.

Dads’ Club Tuition Assistance

The Catholic Central Dads’ Club would like to congratulate Glenn Kremer of Plymouth as the first place winner, winning a year’s tuition, in the 2011 Tuition Assistance Raffle. Other winners were Jeff Doyle winning half year’s tuition, Grayson Arnold winning a quarter year’s tuition, and Charles Widmaier and Kevin Ford each wining $1000.

Catholic Central Dads’ Club raised over $45,000 with net proceeds of $23,300 going to tuition assistance needs at the school. A check for $23,300 was presented to Catholic Central President, Fr. Richard Ranalletti, C.S.B., for tuition assistance needs.

Also scheduled throughout February and March are programs on law, presented by Dennis Barnes ’79 and Sean Cowley ’00; engineering, presented by John MacInnis ’60 and Jim Predhomme ’84; business and entrepreneurship, presented by John Bebes ’83 and Mike Dewan ’85; medicine, presented by Dr. Bob Forte ’69 and Dr. Steven Antone ’93; and arts and communications, presented by Tim Barrett ’77 and Patrick McLaughlin ’80.

Furthermore, Hon. Sean Cox ’79 helps organize a Law Day fieldtrip at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice and the United State District Court in Detroit. Dr. Bob Forte ’69 helps organize a Medical Day. The members of the Career Guidance Committee are Bill Matthews ’58, Bob Rosowski ’58, John Argenta ’58, Denny Barnes ’79, Mike Carrier ’06 and committee chairman, Jeff McGowan ’84. They work in conjunction with Shawn Mather, the Director of Guidance at CC.

Upon receiving the prize, Mr. Kremer thanked the Dads’ Club stating, “I have never won anything before; this is very exciting.” Fr. Ranalletti stated how much he appreciated the work of the Dads’ Club, and that the money will go to help others at the school who are struggling with their tuition.

The Catholic Central Dads’ Club would like to thank everyone who supported the raffle. It is the generosity of the families at Catholic Central that makes fundraisers like this work.

Detroit Economic Club Luncheon On Wednesday, November 30, 2011, a group of seniors attended a luncheon for the Detroit Economic Club held at the Westin Book Cadillac.

Mr. Mitch Hancock ’00, a business teacher at CC, led the students downtown for an in-depth view of Detroit economics. Jim Gibbons, currently the CEO of Goodwill Industries, was the guest speaker. Mr. Gibbons was the first blind person to graduate from the Harvard School of Business. Also, on Monday, January 30, 2012, a group of different seniors attended a luncheon for the Detroit Economic Club. This time, Mr. Mike Mach ’03, an economics teacher at CC, led the group downtown. The primary speaker was Stephen Steinour, the Chairman, President and CEO of Huntington Bank.

Faculty Secret Santa Each year during the Christmas season, female members of the faculty and staff organize and participate in a Secret Santa program.

Every day for a week, small gifts are exchanged, working up to a slightly larger gift on the last day. The identities of the Secret Santas are revealed at a lunch on the last day. This is a wonderful experience that allows the female faculty and staff to bond and share in the holiday spirit!

Paddy O’Riney Memorial Scholarship In 2011, the family of Patrick Riney established the Paddy O’Riney Memorial Scholarship in honor of Patrick Riney, who passed away in February, 2011 (see In Memoriam, page 27) after a courageous battle with cancer. Patrick, an Irishman and a gifted writer, loved Catholic Central High School and the CC experience he shared with his three sons: Patrick ’82, Shaun ’83 and Kevin.

To honor their father and to recognize a student who shares the same passion for creative writing, the Riney brothers, along with their mother Patricia and sister Kelly, awarded the 1st Annual Paddy O’Riney Memorial Scholarship to junior Jacob Glaser ’13. On Saturday, December 17, a scholarship presentation took place.

Keeping Up with Catholic Central Athletes

Basketball - Catholic League Champs

the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Championship after dominating the toughest league in the state with a record of 14-3-1.

The team was led by Head Coach Todd Johnson ’87 and assistants Gordie St. John, Doug Itami, Tom Nugent ’78, Rick Buttery ’01 and Danny Veri.

All-State Swimmers: Ryan Newman ’13, Tim Szuba ’13, Dan Szuba ’12 and Jack Walsh ’15 The Varsity Basketball Team completed one of its most successful seasons in recent memory.

The Shamrock cagers won the Catholic League Championship for the first time since 1997 by defeating DeLaSalle 62-51 and the City Championship for the first time since 1968 by defeating Detroit Martin Luther King Jr. 56-48. The team then entered the playoffs where they defeated Salem for District Title.

Their season ended with a loss to Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in the Regional Final. Led by Coach Bill Dyer and assistants John Fenbert and Rob Fragoso ’05, the Shamrocks finished with an overall record of 17-7.

Skiing The Varsity Ski Team finished the season with a fourth-place finish in the Regional Championship, thus ending the streak of four consecutive state final appearances.

Nonetheless, the Shamrocks had great success during a season with very inconsistent weather. Damon Rottermond ’12 qualified for the State Meet and finished in third place overall in the Giant Slalom. Ian Pierce ’12

Bowling The Varsity Bowling Team finished the regular season with a league record of 9-1 and a first place tie for the conference. After a second place finish in the Catholic League Tournament, the bowlers finished second in the Regional Tournament and qualified for the State Tournament. The team finished in eighth place overall in the state. Along the way, senior co-captain Eric Pavlov ’12 won the Regional Singles Championship.

Hockey The Varsity Hockey Team finished the season with an overall record of 20-5-1. Although their season ended in the second round of the playoffs, the Shamrock icers provided many exciting victories during the season.

One such victory was over Orchard Lake St. Mary’s at Joe Louis Arena for the Catholic League Championship. The team also won 34

Damon Rottermond ‘12 also qualified for the state meet and finished in fourteenth place in the Giant Slalom. The team also won the Mt. Brighton League Championship and finished third in the Catholic League.

Swimming & Diving - 6th in the State The Swimming and Diving Team, led by Head Coach Shannon Dunworth, has shown a tremendous amount of growth and success over the last few years. This season was no different. The team competed to a fifth-place finish in the Oakland County meet as well as a second-place finish in the Schack Invitational.

They also swam to a runner-up finish in the Catholic League Championship meet.

Freshman Jack Walsh set a new CC school 100 Yard backstroke record (53.03 seconds).

The previous mark was held by Zach Fellrath ’02 (53.55). He also set a new school record in the 200 Yard Individual Medley, breaking the record set by Randy Teeters ’92. The 200 Yard Medley Relay team of Jack Walsh ’15, Ryan Newman ’13, Dan Szuba ’12 and Tim Szuba ’13 broke the Detroit Catholic League record and the Livonia Recreation Center pool record with a time of 1:37.60.

The old mark was set last year by CC (1:38.53). The CC Swimmers completed the season by sending nine members to the state finals where they placed sixth in the state – the highest finish since 2001!

Wrestling - State Champs The Varsity Wrestling Team won the State Championship once again! The Shamrock wrestlers completed a dominant season by defeating Oxford 47-9 for the State Championship in Battle Creek. Coached by Mitch Hancock ’00, the team finished the season with a 25-3 overall record and won the Catholic League, District and Regional championships as well. The success can be attributed to the enormous amount of work the student-athletes put in and to the phenomenal leadership of the senior class.

After the team season was finished, ten wrestlers advanced to the Individual Finals held at The Palace of Auburn Hills. CC finished with nine All-State wrestlers including three State Champions: Ken Bade ’13, Drew Garcia ’14 and Kevin Beazley ’12. Also, congratulations to three-time state champ Alec Mooradian ’12 on becoming the first CC wrestler to compete in four state final matches.
