A Message from the
President
Dear Alumni and Friends,
NEWS
Staying Connected With Your Classmates THE GROOVY ’70s 1970 - DCN. ERIC ELSTRO was ordained a permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of Lansing on May 18, 2019.
1994 - MATTHEW McGIVNEY was recently appointed Judge of Michigan’s 44th District Court by Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
When the Board asked me what I wanted to focus on as president, I identified a few areas that
THE VIRTUAL ’00s 2000 - DAN CASSAR and his wife, Melissa, were married on August 18, 2018.
I felt we can quickly address: accessibility, tuition assistance, campus and program development, and finding the best possible people to work with our students. I am happy to say that we are already making incredible progress on all of these items. Accessibility. Some generous donors have provided funding for us to start a bus program; so beginning this fall, we are offering four bus routes to help families commute to and from CC. You can learn more at www.catholiccentral.net/transportation. Tuition Assistance. As of July 1st, we were able to offer tuition assistance to 170 families for this upcoming Ed Turek ’85
school year at a total of $1.1 million. All of this money comes from DRIVE tickets, individual gifts, and our endowment fund.
Campus and Program Development. In addition to the general summer repairs throughout the building, we put the final touches on our new Fr. James Martin, C.S.B. Baseball Complex, refinished the Bernie Holowicki Basketball Court, repaved a large part of the parking lot, and are starting a number of projects around Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 Stadium, which will be apparent this fall. Beginning in August, we are introducing “GDK Days” to our community to help us focus on our mission of “Teaching Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.” A Culture Committee, comprised of several faculty members, worked for months to develop the content and structure. The GDK Days will engage our students, faculty, and parents in their own ways. Exceptional Employees. I knew we had good people working at CC, but seeing the dedication and effort firsthand every day is inspiring. Their excitement and care is contagious and one of the reasons families continue to choose CC to educate their sons. I am looking forward to working closely with Fr. Patrick Fulton, C.S.B. and Fr. Mike Buentello, C.S.B. (read more in this issue), and I am also excited to welcome several other new faculty members for the fall. Continuing Challenges. While we are making great progress in the areas above, we are well aware of some of the challenges we face every day. We know tuition is expensive. We also know that we need to continue to have the best facilities and technology possible for our students and families. We are attacking these challenges head on with some new partnerships and outreach. While our enrollment numbers remain strong, we need to continue to push forward. Help us find the young men we want at CC! You can submit a referral or sign up your son/grandson/nephew up to receive information at www.catholiccentral.net/admissions. The only way we can continue to make progress on these issues is with your help. As we grow, support of our mission from the Catholic Central family does as well. Your recurring and increasing philanthropic gifts not only add up quickly, but also are critical to our mission. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! Looking at the horizon, there are several exciting projects being considered to help grow the mission of Catholic Central. As each is considered and developed, I look forward to sharing them with you. You are in my prayers, and I ask that you keep all of us in yours. Your fellow Shamrock,
Mr. Ed Turek ’85 President, Detroit Catholic Central High School

FAMILY OF THE YEAR:
Patrick McDonald ’54 and family honored by Michigan Knights of Columbus Reprinted with permission by Joseph Serwach, Guest House
How do you get your entire family “onto the ark” to share your Catholic journey? The family of Deacon Patrick McDonald ’54, a Catholic Central alumnus, was recently celebrated by the Michigan Knights of Columbus as “Family of the Year.” All eight of the McDonald children (four sons and four daughters) and 18 grandchildren are active and devoted Catholics. Though they are now spread out across the nation (three of the eight still live in Michigan with the rest in Florida, South Carolina, Virginia and California), they continue to follow the example of their parents.
With a family motto of “Be a Leader, Be a Friend, Be of Service,” their entire family shares their fervor. “For we feel that our marriage was always part of God’s eternal and divine plan,” they explain. “Faith, importantly, is measured out by living your faith in the context of our Church, society and humanity… Our children do the same thing as their vocations of being a social worker, or a medical doctor, or a nurse,
8
So they got on their knees and prayed to Blessed Mother: “Dear Blessed Mother, we’re placing these children under your protection. We can’t do it. That’s been demonstrated. Would you please protect them?” The miracle? The stitches stopped after they entrusted their children to Mary. Deacon Pat has had help from some other tremendous role models.
Deacon Pat, an attorney since 1962, and the longest-serving active deacon in the United States (and perhaps the world) has been serving the Church since 1972 (deacons serve without pay). Pat and his bride Peggy, a daily Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, are at the heart of daily and Sunday Masses at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Brighton, Michigan. They also service the homebound and the Brighton Center for Recovery. Peggy has taught CCD for more than 40 years and is a Befriender and part of the Social Justice Committee. Both are also active in the Right to Life movement and are active in numerous St. Patrick ministries. A book, God Love You, compiling 150 of his best articles, is being published.
What’s their secret? It starts with a special devotion to Mary. Many decades ago, the active McDonald kids, like many outgoing kids, had amassed a number of stitches from falls. When the total stitch count topped 200, Deacon Pat and Peggy feared they weren’t doing enough to protect their children.
Shortly after being ordained a deacon in 1972, he and his fellow deacons went on a retreat at St. Paul of the Cross in Detroit where they were taught by a holy soul now going through the canonization process toward sainthood, Archbishop Fulton Sheen.
Peggy and Pat McDonald ‘54
or a teacher, or meting out fairness and justice as an attorney, protecting the unprotected.” Their parish family, similarly, sees Deacon Pat and Peggy as a spiritual father and mother to the whole community. They are regulars at the St. Pat’s daily 8:30 am Mass, which routinely attracts hundreds every day of the week.
Other role models include St. Patrick, St. Thomas More and St. Lawrence. Deacon Pat and Peggy married on August 10, 1963, which turned out to be the Feast of St. Lawrence (who was both a deacon and a martyr). He joked to Peggy that he wound up the deacon while she wound up being the martyr. Years before “Home Schooling” became a popular trend, Peggy McDonald was featured in The Detroit News for

running a free nursery school for their children as well as three neighbor kids. Pat McDonald spent a decade on the Detroit Board of Education from 1966-1976, the era when the Detroit schools and debates over busing to achieve integrated schools was a debate that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Always trying to unite rather than divide, Deacon McDonald proposed a compromise known as a Magnet Plan for Schools, where specialized schools would serve as magnets drawing together students. Thousands of school districts nationwide have subsequently adopted the concept. Catholic deacons trace their origins to the institutions of “the seven” mentioned in Acts of the Apostles 6 and St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians and the order flourished into the 5th century but over the centuries, deacon became an intermediate stage leading to the priesthood. The Second Vatican Council and the leadership of St. Paul VI brought about the restoration of a permanent diaconate in
1968 with Deacon Pat becoming one of the first men ordained. While there were only 300 permanent deacons in the world in 1970, the numbers climbed to 2,686 by 1975 and have grown steadily ever since. By 2018, there were 46,894 permanent deacons in the world including 18,191 in the United States. Since 1984, Deacon Pat and Peggy have conducted Eight Great Dates, the marriage course for engaged couples, again encouraging the sense of family and community within their parish community. They also encouraged a sense of unity within the family by wearing matching attire, branding themselves “the McDonald Mob” when they get the entire family together for group outings and trips. Deacon Pat also focuses on communication, having been involved with TV, radio, teaching, community work and labor relations including a radio show on WJR and more than four decades as an adjunct law professor at both University of Detroit Mercy Law School and Ave Maria Law School. He continues to bring people together, working as an attorney and arbitrator settling disputes.
Joseph Serwach, who is a St. Patrick parishioner along with Deacon Pat in Brighton, oversees marketing and communications for Lake Orionbased Guest House, where Deacon Pat has served as a trustee for more than 30 years. Guest House is the world’s first and most successful residential treatment and recovery provider for Catholic clergy and religious. Legacy Reunion Mass and Luncheon The annual Catholic Central Legacy Reunion Mass and Luncheon was held at CC on June 12, 2019. This wonderful gathering is held in conjunction with the original Feast of St. Basil and includes all of the classes that are 50 or more years removed from their CC graduation (1929-1969). This includes alumni from our first three school buildings on Harper Avenue, Belmont Avenue, and Outer Drive. Over 150 alumni and their guests were in attendance for mass in the CC chapel, followed by an informal lunch and gathering. Mass was celebrated by CC President Emeritus, Fr. Dick Elmer, C.S.B. ’46. Also, classmates from the great Class of 1949 attended with family and friends as they celebrated their 70th Reunion. Congratulations to them on this fantastic milestone! Thank you for your example and love for Mary, Alma Mater. A special thank you to Fr. John Wheeler, C.S.B. ’57 and the entire Alumni Glee Club for leading us in song during mass.

Two hundred alumni and guests gathered at Laurel Manor Banquet Center on Thursday, May 2, 2019, for the 31st Annual Alumni Association Dinner and All Classes Reunion. The dinner is sponsored by the Catholic Central Alumni Association and recognizes alumni and Basilian Fathers who have done much in the world in service to others by living the virtues of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. The recipients of the Fr. Canning F. Harrison, C.S.B. Distinguished Alumnus Award bring honor and distinction to Detroit Catholic Central High School. The 2019 honorees recognized at this year’s event were Mr. Robert E. Barnes Sr. ’56 and The Honorable Robert J. Colombo Jr. ’68. Both of these men of CC represent Mary, Alma Mater with humility and grace. MR. ROBERT E. BARNES SR. ’56 Bob was an excellent student and a member of the Student Council and Sacristan Club at CC. After earning his B.A. at the University of Detroit, Bob embarked on a long and successful management and entrepreneurial career, which included President of Checker Cab for 18 years, founder of the Metro Detroit Taxicab Association, and owner of Trumbull Auto Sales. The families of Bob and his wife Kathleen (nee McClorey) have a long history of Catholic Central connections. Combined, these two families have had over 30 young men (brothers, including Fr. Joe, C.S.B. ’49, children, Robert ’78 and Dennis ’79, grandchildren, brothers-in-law, sons-in-law, and numerous nephews) join Bob as alumni of CC.

Fr. Patrick Fulton, C.S.B. Named Catholic Central Principal
On May 30, 2019, Detroit Catholic Central President Ed Turek ’85 announced the appointment of Fr. Patrick Fulton, C.S.B. as the 21st Principal in the school’s 91 years of history, effective July 1, 2019, as approved by the Board of Directors. After an intensive three-month search, Fr. Fulton became the clear choice to continue the advancement of Catholic Central’s mission to educate young men in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge at a college-prep level. Fr. Fulton’s resume is filled with experiences that will lend himself to the role of Principal of Catholic Central, perhaps most notably that he is the first Basilian to have served at all three currently operating Basilian high schools in North America; as a teacher at St. Michael’s College School in Toronto, as a Principal at St. Thomas High School in Houston, and as both a teacher and Assistant Principal here at CC. Fr. Fulton also serves as the Superior of the Basilian Fathers of Detroit Catholic Central High School. Fr. Fulton has become a staple of the CC community and is known among the student body for his quick wit on social media, his love for all things Canadian, and his resemblance to Indiana Jones - which he embraced during the most recent DRIVE fundraiser. His recent experience in the classroom also provides perspective on day-to-day life at CC. Fr. Fulton takes the helm as Principal at an exciting moment in CC history. Despite declining private school enrollment throughout the state, CC remains Michigan’s largest Catholic high school. We asked Fr. Fulton to answer a few questions for this article so our alumni base and constituency can get to know him better. How have you enjoyed your time at CC since arriving in summer 2016? I have loved every minute of it! The community has been warm and welcoming when I first arrived, and when I was announced as principal, the response of the CC community was overwhelmingly affirming.

I also love cooking: usually because it means I have some spare time on my hands.
How does CC differ from other schools at which you have worked? There are many similarities with other Basilian schools: the caliber of the students, the broad array of their achievements and interests, the pursuit of excellence, the brotherhood the students have with one another, and the fervor the alumni have for their school. That being said, the spirit of the student body is unlike anything I’ve witnessed before. This is not to say that the student body is repressed at the other schools, but I’ve never seen so many “fans in the stands” for so many different activities. It’s thrilling to see how the students support each other in their endeavors. I have also observed that the Quiz Bowl team is fanatical in their pursuit for victory. It goes without saying that Boys’ Bowl and The Drive are unique and insane experiences. What does it mean to be named the 21st principal at CC? It’s a great honor to have the confidence of the CC community. When I look at all of my predecessors, many of whom I knew personally, I would have never dreamt that one day I’d be listed among this number of good, holy, and pragmatic educators. What is your vision as you assume the role of principal at CC? Each principal previous to myself endeavoured to make the school better than how they came to it; it’s a sacred duty. Catholic Central has an excellent program and great success in growing young men in Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. My vocation as an administrator is to maintain and cultivate those conditions that exist already for excellent teaching and learning, as well as to cultivate an atmosphere that welcomes student and teacher initiatives and innovation.
what I wanted to do, so I’m rather sympathetic to the plight of struggling students. I still managed to (barely) get in the University of Saskatchewan, where for want of anything else, I did a double major in Philosophy and Religious Studies with a focus on eastern religions. It just so happened at the U of S that the Basilians staffed St. Thomas More College, the Catholic college. It was an exciting place to be with young Catholics like myself. In a strange twist of fate and through the kindness of the priests, I ended up living with the Basillians. It was a fascinating and rich experience: they were intellectuals with occasionally wide differences in opinion, but most attractive for me was that they were just “normal” guys. They kicked back and watched sports, went to the movies, and treated me as an equal. It was during this time that I thought to myself, “I think I could do this.” I became a teaching associate and the rest is history. As a Basilian, I’ve been privileged to work in every apostolate that we do, except for the missions. This has provided me with many wonderful ministerial experiences and brought me into the lives of many wonderful people. I have to say the experience that I love the most is the high school experience where one is in a unique and special place to help a young man grow into his best self. CC is just like all the other Basilian high schools in this regard.
Please provide some insight on who you are to help our alumni get to know you. I was born in Toronto, Ontario, to Robin and Mary Lou Fulton. The family soon moved to Peachland, British Columbia - a town with one stoplight. I think there are more people involved in CC than lived in the town. I first met the Basilian Fathers at Immaculata High School which had a total of 120 students when I graduated. I was not a stellar student: I was easily distracted and had no idea 22

Fall Beginnings at Catholic Central by Fr. William Riegel, C.S.B.
“The entire educational process must be carried out with love. And the most effective educational method is not the word of instruction but the living example without which all words remain useless.” -St. Edith Stein, Martyr
It never ceases to amaze me, the energy and excitement of those first days of a school year. Friendships are renewed, the seniors walking with a new confidence, the freshmen in wonder and looking for that classroom, and of course, all of the students looking forward to the reading test from summer reading assignments! Every new school year is different, never a repeat! The Basilians, fresh from the summer’s rest, once again eager to “Teach Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.” Our teachers are primed to begin another year of instruction, and our staff is always here to make sure things run smoothly. The construction projects of the summer months are concluded. We also mark our beginning with our new Administration — president, Mr. Ed Turek ’85, and our new principal, Fr. Patrick Fulton, C.S.B. — a new way forward indeed. As is our custom, we began the year with the Eucharistic Celebration marking the Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary on August 15th. She remains our protector, intercessor, and patroness. Pope Benedict XVI noted:
can hear our prayers, can help us with her motherly kindness, and has been given to us, as the Lord said, precisely as a “mother” to whom we can turn at every moment.” All of the school activities and sports are in full swing, and we look forward to another Boys’ Bowl victory! The fall would simply not be the same without this annual event. GO SHAMROCKS! The school mass resumed at 7:20 am, and the weekly class retreats at St. Paul’s Retreat Center have already begun under the direction of Mr. Kevin Walters, our Campus Minister. We also are looking forward to the three annual Kairos Retreat Weekends at Columbiere in Clarkston. These have truly been a life-changing event for the men of CC. All of this reinforces our mission: “Jesus Christ…the Reason for Catholic Central!” Everything we do here at Catholic Central is formed with this as our focus — academics, activities, fine arts, sports, clubs — everything. If we do not grow deeper in our relationship with the Lord this year, then no matter what other successes we have, we have failed in our mission. So, the Fall brings the end of the growth of summer, and the harvest is being brought in. But for us, it’s really just beginning!
“While she lived on this earth, she could only be close to a few people. Being in God, who is close to us, actually, “within” all of us, Mary shares in this closeness of God. Being in God and with God, she is close to each one of us, knows our hearts,
