Introducing the Third President of Catholic Central Fr. George Smith, C.S.B., the Superior General of the Basilian Fathers, appointed Fr. Jefferson M. Thompson, C.S.B. as the new President of Catholic Central High School beginning July 1, 2012.

Fr. Jefferson Mark Thompson, C.S.B. was born on September 18, 1960 in Jamshedpur, India, not very far from Calcutta. He began his education in Jamshedpur at Loyola School (administered by the Jesuit Fathers of the Province of Baltimore, Maryland), where he continued through Grade 7. In 1973, he moved with his family to Toronto, Canada, where he completed his high school education at St. Michael’s College School (1979), the first institution founded by the Basilian Fathers in North America (1852).

He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in English and French from the University of Toronto (1983), a Master of Arts in English from the University of Toronto (1988), a Master of Divinity in Theology and Pastoral Ministry conjointly from the University of St. Michael’s College and the University of Toronto (1991), and a Master of Arts in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada (1998). He is currently completing a Master of Science in Catholic School Leadership at Madonna University in Livonia, Michigan (2013).

Fr. Thompson professed religious vows in the Congregation of St. Basil (the Basilian Fathers) on August 15, 1987, along with Fr. John B. Huber, C.S.B., the current Principal of Catholic Central High School. August 15th 2012 marked their 25th anniversary of religious profession.

Fr. Thompson was ordained to the priesthood on August 3, 1991 in St. Basil’s Church in Toronto. He has served variously as Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry at Assumption University (Windsor, Canada), at St. Joseph’s College in the University of Alberta (Edmonton), and at the University of St. Thomas (Houston, Texas).

He has served as Editor of The Canadian Catholic Review. He has taught at Lycée Condorcet in Paris, France (English), at Aquinas Institute in Rochester, New York (English and French), at St. Michael’s College School in Toronto (Theology, Philosophy, English, and French), at the University of Alberta in Edmonton (Comparative Literature), and at the University of St. Thomas in Houston (English).

Since 2005, he has been teaching Theology and French at Catholic Central High School, where he has also served on the Board of Directors, on the School Improvement Team, as a faculty speaker at Kairos retreats, as Moderator of the Mothers’ Club, and as Chaplain of the varsity lacrosse team and the academic teams. On weekends, Fr. Thompson has served as a pastoral associate at Holy Family Church in Novi, Michigan.

A Message from the President Dear Alumni and Friends, It is my profound honor and great pleasure to address this introductory message to you in the Aluminator for the first time. The confidence placed in me by the Basilian Fathers and the Catholic Central family to serve as President of Catholic Central High School is humbling, even as it is exciting. I intend to match your trust with my own efforts to ensure the continuing health and success of our beloved school.

I have been teaching Theology and French at Catholic Central since 2005. I am very well acquainted with alumni from the past seven years. In some instances, perhaps I know them only too well. I look forward to meeting many more distinguished and venerable alumni from yesteryear. Our shared memories and connections through the decades are some of the crowning achievements of a Catholic Central education. Cotangents of angles and pluperfect subjunctive passives may come and go, but what continues to stand the test of time is our enduring bond of brotherhood that fashions us into the Body of Christ.

In the time of Jesus, the medical profession had obviously already attained the stature of meriting at least one popular proverb in common usage, which our Lord himself quotes, “Physician, heal thyself” (Luke 4: 23).

To be sure, physicians have been healing multitudes beyond themselves throughout the ages. I think I was five years old when the smiling doctor in my hometown of Jamshedpur, India, assured me that I would be asleep and not feel any pain when he removed my tonsils. Not only was he right, but he made sure that the nurse and my parents served me bowlfuls of ice cream for the next two weeks. It was the happiest and most delicious of introductions to the medical profession, a relationship that has since grown to include my dependence, respect, admiration, and even awe. The birth of my sister’s three children, as ordinary as those procedures are, would have been enough to convince me, but the sheer scope and delicate intricacy of the many extraordinary breakthroughs and accomplishments of medicine in our day have inspired me to avow often, and even in my homilies, that doctors are in so many ways the miracle workers of the modern world.

You know that the Catholic Central family has been praying our hearts out for miracles in the healing of the Cipriano and Trahan families. Increasingly, more glimpses of these miracles have been evident since that tragic day in April 2012, and our doctors have always been at the heart of every triumph and every revelation of good news. Let us always remember that it is never short of a miracle when our prayer in adversity also draws us closer to each other and to God, for this unity has most assuredly been deepening throughout our common experience of pain and suffering. Not only because of such difficult times, but most especially in these kinds of challenging moments, we are so very proud of our Catholic Central alumni who play all varieties of important roles in the medical profession. Your dedicated service and exhilarating success inspire us to continue to look to you with confidence for the next extraordinary miracle with which God will bless our ordinary lives.

We do well to pray every day that God may always give us grateful hearts to sing his praises. Dear alumni doctors, please keep our hearts beating so that our very lives may be a song of praise to almighty God. Mary, Alma Mater, pray for us.

CHATTERBOX Staying Connected With Your Classmates THE NIFTY ’50s 1957 – KEVIN CUMMINGS was a presenter at the Henry Ford Museum for many years, and the Museum has established the “Kevin Cummings Award” which is given annually to a Museum presenter, nominated by his or her peers, and awarded to a presenter in recognition of their Dedication, Commitment, Dignity and Courage.

Kevin passed away in 2008.

1958 – DENNIS TYMOSKO recently tied the 18-hole Senator Course record at Don Shula’s Golf Club in Miami Lakes, Florida.

Dennis shot a 73, including two bogeys and one birdie, to tie the course record. Dennis was the Athletic Director at CC from 19701973 and moved to Florida in 1977.

1959 – RON KOPICKO writes: ‘How I got to Reno? Our Uncle, “Sam” that is, released me from active duty at Oakland Army Base, because by the time I got back to the “world” (as we called it, from the jungle), there was no other REPL Depot to send me to or time to give me leave.

I visited some west coast transplanted relatives and decided I liked the beach boy lifestyle. I finally got a job with the Feds, but after four years in the desert with 120-degree heat, I transferred to the US Marshals Office here in Reno. Of course I married one of those blonde, green-eyed, beautiful California girls and it didn’t hurt that my mom-in-law was a super great cook. After four kids, three grandsons and one great-granddaughter, I guess I’ll stay. Reno has about 300 or so days of sunshine every year, really 4

clean air, beautiful mountains with great hunting and fishing. It is a great place to have raised a family! Outside the casino core, Reno is a really great small town with lots of good folks. I think of the great school CC was to all of us and know the tradition continues.

Hope all is well with everyone connected to CC, past and present.

Well, with that I’ll close for now and keep the CC “family” in my prayers.’

1959 – RONALD MELARAGNI was named the Michigan Pharmacist of the Year by the Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA). The MPA Pharmacist of the Year Award is given to a pharmacist who demonstrates professional excellence and exemplary service to the profession in advancing public health at either the state or local level.

Ronald Melaragni ‘59 Ronald is currently the administrative director of Sparrow Pharmacy Plus Pharmacies.

THE PSYCHEDELIC ’60s 1962 – EDWARD LIPIEC retired from Sparrow Hospital in May 2012, having served as a Pharmacist for 40 years.

1964 – FORREST A. HAINLINE III has been named a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America.

The BBC performed his translation of Chaucer’s “The Franklin,” from the General Prologue, The Canterbury Tales (read by Nicholas Farrell) as part of the program “Abundance.”

1965 – BRIAN DUFFY had a nice two-day reunion with Joe Farley ‘65 in Destin, Florida, in February.

Joe has been the General Manager of the Destin Holiday Inn for over 23 years. Joe still follows CC online, and he hopes to get to the annual ‘656565 Christmas party some year.

THE GROOVY ’70s 1973 – DR. JIM McHENRY is a dentist who lives in Plymouth, Michigan. For the last twelve years, Jim has paid for trips to the villages of Pinalito, Matasano and El Castro in eastern Guatemala to offer his dental services, which are so desperately needed.

Jim works in partnership with “Faith in Action,” a nonprofit organization that works with people in Guatemala and provides education, infrastructure, agricultural development and medical assistance. Over the years, he has provided care to thousands of people and has helped build and equip a dental and medical facility.

1977 – JOE MAIORANA, owner of Joe’s Produce, recently opened a new meat and fish market in Livonia, Michigan, next door to his Seven Mile Joe’s Produce location.

Joe’s Meat & Seafood is a 5,500 square-foot shop at 33066 Seven Mile Road in Livonia. The new store will sell locally sourced meats and fresh fish. Fr. Dick Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 blessed the new store on May 24, 2012.

1977 – BILL WYMAN and his wife of 28 years, Therese, are enjoying their empty nest.

Their two daughters, Kelly and Kate, are post-college and on their own. They enjoy cruising “in” the newest addition to their family - “Sammy” (a 1966 Chevrolet Impala). In May, Bill spoke on “Family Offices and Technology” in Montreaux, Switzerland, and they added some time traveling to Lisieux and Britannia. Then in September, they will be going to Ireland to see Bill’s Irish take on Navy in Dublin.

Bill works in Manhattan and lives in Princeton, NJ.

1978 – DAN DUGGAN is the owner of the Michigan Bucks of the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League.

Dan and his brother, Jim ’79, founded the Bucks in 1996.

THE TECHNO ’80s 1981 – PAUL CARRIER has been awarded a second Fulbright Scholarship by the J. William Paul Carrier ‘81 Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to teach law at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Law in Belgrade, Serbia. Paul served as a professor of law for the Institute for International Relations and Law Approximation, Faculty of Law Comenius University in the Slovak Republic in 1996-1997 when he earned his first Fulbright Scholarship. Last February, he achieved tenure as a professor of law at Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In August, Paul will study the Slovak language at Comenius University, with its Philosophy Faculty, on a scholarship called “Studia Academica Slavonica.”

1983 – GEORGE BAUGHMAN JR. currently lives with his wife, Raleigh, in Redford, Michigan, where he was raised and attended CC on old Breakfast Drive. They will be celebrating 17 years of marriage in November 2012.

His elder of two daughters, Isadora, is starting her high school career at Mercy High School this fall. His younger, Fiona, completes her schooling at St. Valentines in Redford in 2014. In March 2012, George was promoted to the position of Vice President of Marketing and Sales for the Plastomer Corporation.

1983 – STAN HEATH is the head coach for the University of South Florida Bulls Men’s Basketball Team. The 2011-2012 team finished the regular season with a 20-13 record, including a 12-6 record in the Big East Conference.

The Bulls also qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 20 years. For his efforts, Stan was named Big East Coach of the Year!

THE HAPPENING ’90s

1989 – PATRICK MOYLAN and his cousin, Elizabeth Wilson (daughter of James Moylan ’62), were on opposite ends of the Space Shuttle Discovery transfer ceremony from NASA to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. When the Discovery landed at Washington Dulles International Airport atop NASA’s modified Boeing 747 aircraft, it was still over four miles from its final destination at the Museum. NASA and the Museum selected Signature Flight Support to provide this final transportation link and Patrick, the Director of Safety & Security for Signature Flight Support, was on site to ensure Discovery’s safe delivery.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth, the Director of the Museum’s National Air and Space Society, was planning events for donors to help celebrate the arrival of Discovery. Patrick is the son of Edward Moylan ’58.

1990 – MAJ. JIM BERNTHAL recently helped Sister Annunciata Wentz of the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, realize her dream of flying with the Blue Angels. Sister Annunciata teaches second grade in South Carolina, but she used to work with Jim’s mother for the Dominican Sisters in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

1991 – STEVE SHANNON was recently awarded tenure at North Carolina State University in the Department of Nuclear Engineering. A recent article from his research group was featured on the cover of the journal, “Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics.” The article was entitled “A VHF driven coaxial atmospheric air plasma: electrical and optical characterization.”

1999 – JUSTIN CESSANTE has been with H.Y.P.E. (Helping Youth Progress & Excel) Athletics Community since 2001 and now serves as the Director of Community Relations & Development. H.Y.P.E. Athletics Community is a non-profit organization founded in 2001 with the mission to strengthen the family infrastructure. H.Y.P.E. services the Metro Detroit communities through athletics and free social services. The organization just celebrated the Grand Opening of the new state of the art 104,000 sq. ft. Recreation Center with a dinner that had 1,200 supporters attend. H.Y.P.E. has serviced over 70,000 youths in the past 11 years. Justin also serves as an assistant Varsity Football Coach at CC.

THE VIRTUAL ’00s 2000 – FRANK MATHIAS recently opened his own Farmer’s Insurance Office in South Lyon, Michigan. Frank’s office is located in King Plaza on Pontiac Trail.

2001 – ANTHONY CORATTI is the head basketball coach at Livonia Ladywood. This past season, he led the Blazers to the MHSAA District Championship.

2001 – ANTHONY FULLER has accepted a promotion to Lead Product Applications Engineer at the Portland Power Center for Eaton Corporation’s Electrical Group and has relocated to the Portland, Oregon area as of December 1, 2011 with his wife, Kathryn, and their two boys Albin (3) and Colin (2). Anthony joined Eaton in 2006 as a field service engineer in the Novi, Michigan office and was most recently part of the operation team in the Great Lakes district, covering Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. Prior to joining Eaton Corporation, he worked at DTE Energy in their Data Integrity group and assisted with their Super Bowl XL beautification

project downtown. Eaton Corporation (NYSE: ETN) is a diversified power management company headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, and is ranked among the largest Fortune 500 companies. The electrical group is Eaton’s largest division and is a global leader in electrical control, power distribution, power quality, automation, and monitoring products and services.

2001 – THOMAS HOEG, his brother, Richard ’98, and their company, ByteSize Games, Inc., whose first game, FlipShip, was highlighted in the Spring 2012 Aluminator, released a second game in April 2012.

The second game, Little Labyrinths, is available from the Apple App Store. Furthermore, Little Labyrinths’ first update, “A Song of Slime and Fire,” was released to the App Store in May at no further cost to the players.

2002 – TONY KREUCHER received his Master of Arts in Theology from Sacred Heart Major Seminary on April 28, 2012. Tony is living in Canton with his brother Ben ’02.

2003 – DOUG CREIGHTON was named the Super Basketball League Player of the Week for the second week Doug Creighton ‘03 of March 2012 by the Basketball Writers’ Association for his exceptional performance with the semi-professional Pure Youth

Construction Basketball Team in Taiwan. Doug also won the ThreePoint Shootout during their All-Star Weekend.

2003 – BRYAN GENRICH and 2004 – KYLE SMITH both went to Michigan State University and then on to the MSU College of Law. They both made the nationally ranked Appellate Moot Court Board at the Law School, which is essentially a competition that places students in settings to argue a fictional case in front of the U.S. Supreme Court, which is comprised of lawyers and actual judges.

Earlier this year, Bryan had the opportunity to choose his teammate and chose Kyle. In April, they competed in the Jerome F. Prince National Moot Court Competition hosted by Brooklyn Law School.

The competition consisted of six rounds and involved 36 schools from across the country. They are proud to report that the Shamrocks (representing Michigan State College of Law) took first place and are National Champions!

2005 – JEFF BOWLING finished his second year of teaching and coaching at U of D Jesuit. Jeff taught Sharon and Jeff Bowling ‘05 computers for both the high school and the academy and was also the head varsity baseball coach for the academy.

2008 – STEFAN GATT will be starring in the movie Fun Size opposite such stars as Victoria Justice, Chelsea Handler and Johnny Knoxville. The film is being distributed by Paramount and is set to be released in October 2012.

2008 – CONOR PARKS recently graduated from the University of Michigan College of Engineering after being named to the Dean’s List for seven consecutive semesters.

He has been accepted to Purdue University’s prestigious PhD program to continue his chemical engineering education.

2008 – JEFF LEROY, STEVE SMITH and 2010 – ANTHONY ROSSI were a part of the first-ever National Championship in the history of Adrian College. All three CC alumni are on the Adrian College

Hockey Gold Team which competes in Division 3 of the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

On March 17, 2012, at the Canlan Ice Sports Red Rink in Vineland, New Jersey, the Adrian Bulldogs defeated in-state rival, Davenport University, 4-2 to capture the first national championship in the program’s history.

2009 – J. J. SZMADZINSKI, a junior at Bucknell University, has been voted the 2012 Patriot League Men’s J.J. Szmadzinski ’09 Golf ScholarAthlete of the Year. J. J. posted the team’s best scoring average this past season while carrying a 3.90 cumulative grade-point average in Bucknell’s challenging management program. Away from the golf course, Szmadzinski is working toward a BSBA in management. He has been a member of the Bucknell Dean’s List every semester so far and has also been an annual member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. On campus, Szmadzinski serves as treasurer of the Bucknell Interfraternity Council, managing an $80,000 budget. In that role, he has organized several campuswide events that raised funds for alcohol awareness programming.

In addition, he serves as a teaching assistant for the Financial Accounting II course. J. J. represents the men’s golf program on the Bucknell Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and he is a member of the Bucknell Business Leaders Club.

In addition to being singled out as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year,

Szmadzinski also made the five-man Academic All-Patriot League Team for men’s golf.

John Jakubik ’10 John transferred to MSU from Kalamazoo College after recording 21 catches for 244 yards and three touchdowns in 2010. He spent all of last season on MSU’s scout team. This season, John hopes to find himself in the mix for playing time as a wide receiver.

Myers, Florida (November 2011) November is the month we remember and honor all veterans who so gallantly served our country during the many wars America has been involved in this past century. Here at Del Tura we are privileged to have several of these veterans among our own residents. One such person is Jim Buescher ’42 of Buena Vista Drive.

Jim was born in Cincinnati in 1924 and when he graduated from Catholic Central High School in Detroit in 1942 was the perfect age to be drafted into the Army during World War II. One of the few options available to him was to enlist in the Army Air Force before his draft notice arrived, and that was what he decided to do.

Jim reported for basic training in Miami Beach and then pilot training in Lakeland, Florida, and later Bombardier School in Midland, Texas, where he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. There he joined a B17 Crew, which was part of the 91st Bomber Group and quickly shipped overseas to Liverpool, England, and then their base in Bassingbourn. The crew’s missions were to fly over the English Channel and bomb bridges on the Rhine River in Germany.

Jim flew as a bombardier on three of these missions successfully, but the fourth one proved to be unlucky for him and the other crew members. As the flight came close to the Ardennes frontline, they came under German anti-aircraft gunfire at the same time German fighter planes attacked

the B17s. His plane was hit by an 8.8 cm shell, which exploded inside the aircraft.

ALUMNI BUSINESS PROFILE: Kevin O’Connor ’79 Kevin O’Connor ’79 was born in Livonia, Michigan, on April 4, 1961. He graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School in 1979 and from the University of Michigan in 1983 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

After entering the business world, Kevin co-founded ICC, an Atlantabased software company. In 1992, ICC was acquired by DCA [Digital Communications Associates]. Continuing his business career, Kevin was the initial investor in Internet Security Systems (ISS) which sold to IBM for $1.4B in 2006. He also co-founded, and was CEO of DoubleClick in 1996 which later sold to Google for $3.1B. In 2003, Kevin authored a book, “The Map of Innovation: Creating Something Out of Nothing.” He also started his own venture capital firm, O’Connor Ventures, where he invested in early stage companies including: Surfline, Travidia, ProCore and CampusExplorer.

Student Response to Tragedy The spiritual life at CC that we featured in our last issue was given an occasion to respond in real time to tragedy and sorrow.

Our Blessed Mother, Mary Alma Mater, watches over all of Catholic Central Those who live in the Detroit area are aware of the tragedy that occurred with one of Catholic Central’s current families, the Ciprianos. Tanner ‘13 and Salvatore ‘13, twin brothers, are both young men of CC. In the early morning of April 16, their father, Bob, was killed, their mom, Rose, was severely beaten, as was our student, Sal. Tanner hid, called 911, thus saving his life and that of his younger sister, Isabella. Rose and Sal remained in critical condition for several weeks; Sal’s injuries were much more severe than those of his mother. Bob was an active participant in the CC Dads’ Club, and Rose is one of

our lead mothers for the CC Band.

This horrific tragedy has affected the entire CC community in a very intimate way. I informed our student body and our parents of the tragedy immediately, and gave regular updates. On the day of the tragedy, the entire student body gathered for the last period of the day in the gymnasium to pray. It is extremely rare that over 1,000 young men enter the gym in total silence, especially when no one asked them to keep quiet. The Basilian Fathers then led the entire community in the rosary. Students left the gym as they had entered: in silence.

Many students asked if we could pray the rosary on a daily basis after school.

How could we say no to such a request?

For the remainder of the school year, the rosary was prayed, led by students in the CC chapel every afternoon at 3:00 pm.

During the first week of the tragedy, one of our moms e-mailed me and suggested we hold a vigil Sunday night (April 22) in the CC stadium. After consulting with the Mothers’ and Dads’ clubs, it was decided that we could indeed hold such a gathering. The vigil was scheduled for 8:00 pm, so that we could pray the rosary in the daylight and then have a candlelight procession from the stadium to the statue of Mary Alma Mater in front of the school when darkness fell. By 8:00 pm on Sunday, the stadium was packed. Among the 4,000+ people who attended, well over 80% of the student body participated on this windy, chilly evening. News crews covered the story, and we were blessed to have a good number of alumni, many students from our fellow Catholic (and public) high schools and parish schools in the archdiocese, and many members of the Cipriano family, including Tanner and his uncles, aunts and cousins. The hundreds of young men of CC formed a shield on the football field, as the stands were already filled with adults and students from other schools.

The statue of our Blessed Mother, the same one that has been present at graduations as prepared by Father Donoher for decades, was front and center on the field, protected by CC honor guard students, with giant banners on either side, stating: “Prayer is a powerful force” and “A brotherhood of love.” The Cipriano family began the candlelight

procession, followed by the thousands of others, walking through a path formed by two parallel aisles of CC students holding candles.

Bob Cipriano’s funeral took place the following Wednesday at Saint Fabian Church. Classes at CC and at St. Fabian’s school were cancelled.

The Church was filled, as were the gymnasium and parish hall, using video monitors so that all could participate.

The walls were lined with students of Catholic Central: CC honor guard wearing CC letter sweaters, and CC band students wearing their blue letter sweaters. The funeral was presided over by St. Fabian’s pastor, Fr. Jeff Day, and concelebrated by all 10 of CC’s Basilian Fathers. Before the final commendation, Tanner offered a touching eulogy for his father. This brave young man called for forgiveness, touching the hearts of all of us:

Many schools against whom we compete in sporting and academic events held fundraisers for the benefit of the Cipriano Children’s Trust Fund, including Brother Rice, Gabriel Richard of Ann Arbor, Divine Child, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, Mercy, Ladywood, St. Catherine’s, Harrison, Northville, North Farmington and Farmington High Schools. St. Mary’s flew a blue CC flag with a shamrock and “#14” (Sal’s number on the CC baseball team) at their games against CC and then gave us the flag. The flag was placed just below the American flag on the CC campus in front of the school. Such tremendous solidarity has shown us that our competitors on the field or in the gym are not our enemies: they are our friends.

Through an unspeakably painful tragedy, the Catholic Central community turned towards our loving God and our patroness, His mother and ours, the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom we call Mary Alma Mater. I told the students and the entire community that this tragedy was not part of God’s plan, but that human

sinfulness constantly interrupts God’s plan, and that we must turn towards Him where we will find the grace to deal with such pain, because indeed love is stronger than violence. It is stronger than hatred and evil. Love is the most powerful force in the world.

None of us are surprised that our current CC Shamrocks instinctively turned towards prayer and brotherhood, to stand up for their brothers, Tanner and Sal, and their grieving family. Our students already had the love of God within them, and they allowed this profound love to flourish brightly through this tragedy and beyond.

Their actions have led many alumni of CC to say to us words such as “I have never been prouder to be associated with Catholic Central and to be Catholic.”

Through the inspiration of our students, the CC community has recommitted itself to our patroness, who has watched over us and guided us through this experience, and who continues to lead us to her Son, Our Lord Jesus. Saint Basil, pray for us.

Mary Alma Mater, pray for us.

“I stand here, in my most vulnerable hour, and beg, in the absence of my father, that all of you may find it in your loving hearts to forgive Mitchell and to forgive Tucker as my father had done time after time after time. Because it is only after true forgiveness that true healing will begin.

My father was a loving man, and with his guidance, I pray that we may all follow in his footsteps of love.”

Fellow Alumni, As we prepare to enter into another school year at Catholic Central, I just wanted to reflect on something that brought our community closer together last year. As a CC Family, made up of alumni, students, parents and supporters, we did a lot to prove our unity and brotherhood in the aftermath of the Cipriano family tragedy. Furthermore, the entire Catholic League community as a whole has shown that faith and unity through our Lord is far superior to the rivalries, misunderstandings and disputes that sometimes seem to involve our Catholic schools, even beyond athletics.

If anyone ever questioned the Spirit of Catholic Central or the power of prayer in the past, I would say their doubts no longer exist.

In the wake of a family tragedy that seemed to affect almost everyone, our families and other Catholic communities really seemed to unite and support each other in ways that I have not witnessed in my short time here. I was amazed by the sincerity and generosity shown by all.

Even in a year when rivalries and athletic competition between Catholic League schools seemed to be intensifying, we were consoled and fully supported by all of the surrounding schools. Fundraisers, well wishes, gifts, prayers and so much more were offered to help our families through the difficult time. It was amazing to be able to lean on our sisters and brothers and know that they stood firmly behind us as we did our best to cope. We are a faith community that now find ourselves much more similar than different.

We have all learned a lot from the Cipriano family. We can all take the words of Tanner ’13 and know that love, respect, hard work and forgiveness are the virtues that unite us and make us strong. We are stronger now, and we believe in the mission of all Catholic schools.

When asked, I have always said that the greatest thing to take from Catholic Central is the brotherhood and love that remains forever, long after graduation. I believe this now more than ever. I hope and pray that this remains true forever. As long as we continue to flourish as a CC Family, it will.

Once again the Early Involvement Committee of the Alumni Association organized the Alumni Basketball League during the winter months of January through March. The committee includes Andy Slankster ’94 and chairman Scott Hauncher ’89.

Each Sunday, excluding Super Bowl Sunday of course, many alumni come back to CC to compete in the Alumni Basketball League. The league is comprised of two divisions. In the Outer Drive Division, “All Washed Up” was the champion. In the Breakfast Drive Division, “Best of the 90’s” came out on top.

Evening of Reflection On Tuesday, March 6, 2012, the Alumni Association Spirituality Committee hosted an Evening of Reflection. Fr. Bob Schikora ’65 was our celebrant and guest speaker.

Fr. Bob was excited to come to CC to celebrate Mass in the CC Chapel for the first time since his ordination in the spring of 2011. Fr. Bob spoke about the season of Lent and how we should strive to strengthen our relationship with Christ.

The Alumni Glee Club, which Fr. Bob helped establish, sang at Mass. Attendance was light, but there was a great representation from the Class of 1965, better known as ’656565!

Fr. Ward was represented by members of his family, and his sister, Nancy, accepted the award on his behalf. After being ordained in 1970, Fr. Ward spent his career as a teacher, coach and administrator at many Basilian high schools. His final stop before his untimely passing on November 12, 2009, was his alma mater, Detroit Catholic Central. Fr. Ward returned to CC in 1987 and began teaching mathematics and coaching the hurdlers on the track & field team.

Stan Sheridan is a founding member of the Alumni Association.

Additionally, he served as the Association’s second President from 1993-1996. With many family members and friends in attendance, including his sons, David ’86, Marc ’87 and John ’90, Stan was honored as the alumnus of the year because of his tremendous success in the business world and his abundant generosity and devotion to Catholic Central. Stan served as the President and CEO of Faygo Beverages until his retirement in 2004. Mr. Nick Caporella, the President of National Beverage Corporation, spoke in Stan’s behalf.

Alumni Homecoming Like last year, all CC Alumni are invited back to celebrate Homecoming.

Shamrock Reunions Shamrocks in Florida The 4th Annual Florida Reunion was held at Sharky’s on the Pier in Venice, Florida, on Saturday, March 24, 2012. This year proved to be the most successful out-of-state reunion in recent memory and maybe even in the history of the school. With over 100 people in attendance, including almost 80 alumni ranging from 1941-2006, the reunion was a huge success! Outgoing CC President, Fr. Richard Ranalletti, C.S.B. celebrated Mass, and President Emeritus, Fr. Dick Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 was also in attendance.

The credit goes to Ray Billinghurst ’55 for his dedication and long-standing commitment to the Class of 1955 and to CC.

The reunion was made possible through the generosity of Mike Pachota ’71 and Greg Novack ’71. Mike Pachota owns Sharky’s on the Pier and not only offers a great location, but he helps offset a large portion of the cost. The atmosphere is incredible, and the food is even better!

A special thank you goes to the members of the Class of 1955 who continue to make this Florida Reunion a success. With over 15 classmates in attendance, they once again had the largest showing by any one class.

Our 5th Florida Reunion has already been scheduled for Saturday, March 9, 2013.

Chicago Reunion The annual Chicago Reunion was held on Tuesday, June 12, 2012, and was a huge success! Thanks to the extreme generosity of John Radtke ’81, we were able to acquire a block of premium tickets to the Chicago Cubs game against the Detroit Tigers at historic Wrigley Field.

We began with a two-hour pre-game gathering at the Captain Morgan Club and then watched the game from the third base line near the Cubs bullpen. We had nearly 40 people in attendance including alumni from 1952, 2006, and many years in between.

Our alumni have excelled in many fields, and over the years we have featured stories of those that work in many of these fields.

However, the medical profession seems to be one of the largest categories that we have not featured in previous issues of the Aluminator. There are several hundred alumni doing great work in medicine. We present here a few of them.

We sent out a general call for biographies in an attempt to present various graduation years and a cross-section of medical specialties. We are grateful to those who took time out of their busy schedules to respond to our request. Those who intended to respond but were not able to do so by the deadline are encouraged to do so now. Through the use of our website we can still present the contributions that do not fit into the printed Aluminator or that arrive after the deadline. -Editor

PETER ARGENTA ’87 GYNECOLOGIC ONCOLOGY After graduating from CC in 1987, I graduated from the University of Michigan in 1991 with a BS in Biology.

I attended the Duke University School of Medicine where I graduated in 1995 with an MD. I was a fellow at the Fetal Treatment Center at the University of California at San Francisco in 1994.

I interned at the University of Pennsylvania in 1999 in obstetrics and gynecology.

I was a fellow in gynecologic oncology at Mount Sinai Medical School in New York City in 2002. I am currently a tenured Associate Professor in Gynecologic Oncology at the University of Minnesota. I have been married for 17 years to a very patient woman and have a daughter, Maya, 10, and a son, Dominic, 7. We live in Maple Grove, Minnesota, a suburban of Minneapolis.

I always knew I wanted to be a doctor, but the type of doctor came to me very late in the process of discernment. Currently I work at a teaching university, and my time is split evenly among patient care, teaching, and working in the laboratory. I currently have multiple administrative positions both at my institution and nationally.

I have been involved in medical mission trips to Israel and Togo, Africa, where I will be returning this May. In the former case I was helping to advance an established but struggling gynecologic oncology service. In the latter, I was working in relief of missionaries who needed relief. Locally, I serve on the medical board for the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance.

There are three things that I tell everyone who is thinking about medical school: a. The single most important asset for the aspiring physician is not “smarts;” it’s determination and perseverance. The people who excel are the ones who refuse to accept that they won’t be able to succeed. b. Success comes at a price, and I am not talking about a financial burden. I was on call 12 to 14 nights a month for 15 consecutive months during my training. This takes a toll on one’s health, marriage, family, and friendships. In order to keep that which is most precious, you will have to prioritize and sacrifice. c. Be open to your calling. On the day I entered medical school I was asked what I thought I would be (surgeon or pediatrician), and that was impossible for me to say then. Twenty years later I am a gynecologic oncologist.

During my training I aggressively tried to avoid rotating through the oncology intensive care unit, where I knew people died almost daily. I even offered to give up a year’s worth of holidays; so great was my desire to avoid patients that were “hopeless.”

When, inevitably, there were no takers, I reported to the ICU only to find a group of people who were not only not “hopeless,” but full of a desire to live and in desperate need of help against very long odds. With the counsel of a good mentor, I had my Damascus moment. I realized I had the skill set and disposition to care for surgical oncology patients, and if knowing this, I still avoided those who needed me most – what sort of doctor could I claim to be?

MICHAEL GATT ’82 OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY I graduated from Catholic Central in 1982 and attended Hillsdale College where I played football and was blessed to be part of the National Championship team in 1985. After Hillsdale, I went to medical school at Michigan State University and graduated in 1990. I did my residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Providence Hospital in Southfield. After residency, I was on staff at Beaumont Hospital. I currently serve as Chairman of the Ob-Gyn Department at St. Mary Hospital in Livonia where I have worked for 17 years.

My wife, Maureen, and I live in Farmington Hills and have four children. Our daughter, Meredith, graduated from Mercy and Hillsdale College and is now a nurse.

Our three sons, Nickolas ’09, Mitchell ’11 and Carson ’14 are all Shamrocks.

Nickolas started college in Alabama but is currently at MSU playing hockey. Mitchell is playing baseball at Hillsdale College, and Carson has committed to MSU to play hockey. Our dear friend and former CC principal, Rev. Philip Acquaro, C.S.B., married Maureen and me and baptized all our children, too.

I would advise anyone who wants to pursue a career in medicine to follow his dreams and not let anything prevent him from achieving his goal. Being an Ob-Gyn allows me to have the privilege of sharing the miracle of birth with patients as well as caring for women of all ages for general health concerns. I highly recommend becoming active in one’s community, too. Some of my most fulfilling experiences come from coaching youth football at St. Edith and helping the boys get rewarded for their efforts with a CYO Championship.

It has been very special to have my boys attend CC. The education is outstanding, the brotherhood and school spirit are unmatched, and the tradition is unrivaled.

We are blessed to have been taught Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge by the Basilians and dedicated staff of Catholic Central.

CHARLES PORRETTA ’45 ORTHOPEDICS I’m Charles Porretta, Catholic Central class of 1945.

I had my pre-med schooling at the University of Michigan and graduated from the U of M Medical School in 1951. I then interned at Providence Hospital in Detroit and then was fortunate to have training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. My fellowship in orthopedics at Mayo was interrupted by two years in the U.S. Army, and I then completed the fellowship in 1957. We thought that we were so sophisticated when I started a practice in orthopedics in the 50s with all the latest tools and medications of the time, but seeing the tremendous advances that have taken place since then makes me realize that we were pioneers, in a way.

I would love to be able to start over with today’s knowledge and equipment. And, with advances snowballing, imagine what it will be like in another half century when some of you will be looking back on your careers in medicine. Surely there are changes taking place in medicine, mostly socially and politically, with which some aren’t happy, but I would still choose medicine for a fulfilling and satisfying career.

Go for it!

GREG MAHR ’75 PSYCHIATRY Since my years at CC I’ve married and have one child who is now a freshman at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. I went to undergrad and medical school at Wayne State University and then completed a psychiatric residency also at Wayne. I spent many years in the Henry Ford Health system, at one point serving as Medical Director of Kingswood Hospital, their large freestanding psychiatric facility. For the last four years I have worked at Oakwood Hospital. I still teach at the medical school, and this year I was named “Voluntary Faculty of the Year.” I maintained the strong interest in religion and philosophy that was nurtured at CC by fine teachers like Mr. Scheuermann and Fr. Paramo; I have published a good deal in that area and recently started a blog called “Psych and Soul” which can be found at www.gregmahrmd.com.

ANTONY SCALIA ’93 PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT, ADMINISTRATOR, MEDICAL STUDENT I was married in 2009, and we are planning to have children. I live in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

After CC I attended the University of Michigan-Dearborn and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1999. From the University of Michigan Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies I graduated in 2001 with a Master of Science in Kinesiology (specifically, Exercise Endocrinology). In 2002 I graduated with a Master of Health Services Administration. At the University of Detroit Mercy School of Life Sciences I did Physician Assistant Studies.

I worked for Wellness Institute of America as Executive Director of Physical Rehabilitation Services for Daimler-Chrysler. My medical career has concentrated on caring for aging baby-boomers, specifically, in diabetic care and ophthalmology.

I have worked at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak as an Executive Administrator in the Director’s Office; at Cancer Care Associates as executive grant writer in finance (responsible for 130 departments as Financial Analyst); at Management Engineering, where I was responsible for re-designing the Outpatient Pharmacy Department and “benchmarking” nursing care for patients by evaluating the entire hospital with a company called HMC. In 2010, I began medical school at the International University of the Health Sciences, and I expect to graduate in 2014 with an MD (Allopathy).

I’ve made time to volunteer for “Toys for Tots” and for “The Rescue,” a battered women’s shelter in Pontiac, Michigan. Also I’ve worked for the March of Dimes and at soup kitchens around Highland Park. This mainly happened on weekends when I had time. I found this to be some of the most rewarding work I’ve ever done.

Here is my advice to CC students: a) don’t give up on your dreams of serving others. Remember, if you don’t know both the business end and the medical end, you don’t know enough to survive in medicine. The best physicians are also the best administrators. b) Prayer every day will help you to change situations that you might believe are untenable -- with God, everything is possible.

Let me finish by saying this: Through medical school, physician assistant school, a bachelor’s degree and double masters degrees, I’ve never had anything that challenged me more than a question at Catholic Central in English (Mr. Scheuermann) or in Theology (Fr. Paramo). I’d like to volunteer to speak to the students during their Career Day to tell them to pay attention to the teachers at CC and to keep their faith strong through prayer and service to their families and to the poor.

ADAM RALKO ’02 INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENT My name is Adam Ralko ’02, and I am currently in my second year of internal medicine residency at the University of Michigan. I attended college and medical school at Washington University in St. Louis and am planning to apply for a fellowship to specialize in cardiology when I complete my residency next year.

My research interests include cardiovascular imaging, and my recent study comparing the use of different imaging modalities for the diagnosis of a rare arterial disease called fibromuscular dysplasia has just been accepted for presentation at the upcoming American College of Cardiology annual meeting. When I am not at the hospital, I am enjoying newlywed life in Ann Arbor with my wife, Charis, who works as an online advertising associate for Google.

The best advice I can give to CC students considering a career in medicine is to take advantage of any available opportunities to gain exposure to the medical profession.

Whether it be volunteer work at a local hospital, shadowing different physicians, or participating in a research project, all of those experiences will help you confirm that medicine is the right career path for you and will ultimately help you decide what type of medicine you want to practice. I could not be any happier with my profession, and it was those early experiences in high school and college that helped to form the foundation for my early career.

KENNETH O’BARA ’65 EMERGENCY MEDICINE I am Kenneth O’Bara, and I live in Seattle with my wife, Marianne (Schwartz), whom I married in 1972, and our twin sons, Mickel (pronounced Michael) and Thomas, born in 1987. I attended the University of Michigan Medical School and graduated in 1972. I have worked at the Truman Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri; St Joseph Hospital outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Valley Medical Center in Renton, Washington; Health Force Partners in Seattle, Washington; and Qualis Health in Seattle, Washington. I am board-certified in Emergency Medicine.

Currently I am Associate Medical Director at Qualis Health.

ROBERT FORTE ’69 PLASTIC SURGERY, DIRECTOR Since my graduation from CC in 1969 I earned my B.S. in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Alabama and my dental degree (DDS) from the University of Detroit. This was followed by three years of specialty training at Henry Ford Hospital as an oral/maxillafacial surgeon. This led to my decision to pursue a medical degree which I obtained from the American University of the Caribbean. After five years of training and board certification in General Surgery at Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan, I accepted a two-year residency with the Medical College of Wisconsin. This was to reach my goal of becoming a board-certified plastic surgeon. I finished my training back at Providence Hospital for a one-year fellowship in Cranio-Facial Surgery. I did find time to get married to Patty (McGrath) whose father, James J. ’41 was also a CC grad.

We have three children: Colleen (Mercy ‘04), Robert ’06, and Bryan ’09. We have lived in Farmington Hills since our return from Wisconsin. Currently, I run my private practice with offices in West Bloomfield and Novi. This allows me to be on staff at Providence and Beaumont to treat children with facial deformities and women requiring breast reconstruction after breast cancer.

In the world of modern medicine, you cannot avoid involvement in administrative duties. Presently, I am the on-site Director for the Wayne State University Plastic Surgery Program at Providence Hospital. I have held terms as the President of the Michigan Academy of Plastic Surgeons and the Michigan Cleft Lip and Palate Society, and as the Division Chief of Plastic Surgery at Providence Hospital.

One of the most gratifying parts of my career was the annual trips to Honduras over ten years. On these missions we performed 150 surgeries per week -- mostly cleft lip and palate repair. My advice to current CC students who want to pursue a career in medicine is that they will have to be very dedicated to their profession, moreso than ever before.

Changes are coming in medicine that will not allow physicians to have much control, but the feeling of helping people will never go away.

ROGER HARDEN ’70 ALLERGY AND IMMUNOLOGY I have been married for thirty-one years to wife Celie. We have lived in Austin, Texas, since 1987. We have three daughters and one son. Holly did Catholic missionary work in the interior of Mexico and the Amazon in Ecuador, and is now married and living in Connecticut with two children. I’m a grandpa. Diana is married and is a second grade teacher at a local Catholic school. Linda is married with one daughter and is in her third year of medical school. Our son, Stephen, 16, is at St. Dominic Savio, the new startup Catholic high school in Austin, started with the participation of the Dominicans of Mary Mother of the Eucharist, and thereby connected to CC thanks to Fr. Elmer.

He is considering the priesthood. I was an undergraduate at Notre Dame graduating in chemistry. I went to medical school at Johns Hopkins. My internship and residency in internal medicine was at Baylor Affiliated at Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas. I did a fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I have a solo private practice in allergy and immunology. I helped start and am the founding president of the Austin Guild of the Catholic Medical Association. I served on the board of directors of a local Catholic radio station. My wife and I have been natural family planning teachers with the Couple to Couple League for twenty six years. I have served the Boy Scouts in various capacities.

My advice to CC students is that anyone going into medicine needs to do it because they love the work and love the people.

You have a precious jewel in Catholic Central. When you’re there as a student, you kind of take it for granted. It’s only as time goes on that you really get some perspective on what CC is. I’m talking especially about the teachers, the staff, everyone who puts their heart into your formation, not just your education.

The goodness, discipline and knowledge motto is not just words.

They are realities that are important, in that order. The world generally has the knowledge thing down pat, but you can’t use it without the discipline, and you don’t know what to do without the goodness. The world can’t teach you that.

FRANK STACKHOUSE ’69 PEDIATRICS, INTERNAL MEDICINE

JOHN RONAYNE JR. ’37 (1920-1987) Catholic Central Team Physician for 30 Years Dr. John Ronayne, Jr. ’37 was a special member of the medical profession as far as CC is concerned.

During most of his medical career (from 1951 to 1981) he served as team physician for the athletes of CC (primarily but not exclusively for football). He also took care of many of the Basilian Fathers during that time.

Here his son, John Ronayne III ’64 agreed to write his father’s biography. Since the other biographies are written in the first person, he wrote his father’s the same way.

Since my life’s journey actually ended some time ago (1987), I am in a pretty good position to put things into perspective. When I do, it is clear that a lifelong commitment, albeit at times imperfect, to “Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge” could not have better prepared me for the practice of medicine.

After CC, I wandered north to another set of Basilians at St. Michael’s College in Toronto, departing from that encounter with a degree in chemistry.

After serving in the Pacific in the Big War, I came home and married Mary Maloney and shortly after my discharge at the venerable age of 26, started medical school at Wayne State University. By the time I was an intern, the first three of what would be our eleven children had been born. Upon graduation, I started a practice--beginning in Highland Park and then locating in northwest Detroit in the shadow of 6565 West Outer Drive. Six of our seven Catholic Central sons attended CC at that location. My last office was in Farmington Hills. l was a practicing physician, which in time became its own specialty known as “Family Practice.” Consistent with the “Family” theme, obstetrics was a very significant and rewarding part of my practice. I’m sure I helped to bring thousands into the world; twins from time to time and even a set of triplets.

Upon being introduced to a stranger, it is not uncommon for one of my progeny to be told, “Your dad delivered me.” I guess I also had a subspecialty, which would now be identified as “Sports Medicine.” Along the way I became the Medical Director of Wyandotte Chemical Company (now BASF, the employer of my son Matt), combining the practice of medicine with my love for chemistry.

I didn’t always want to become a doctor and early on rejected the idea. But when I finally decided to go into medicine, I had the benefit of a great education behind me to support that decision. CC provided that strong foundation, especially the great science courses taught by Fathers Miller, Klosterman, and Paramo. Originally my plan was to follow a career in scientific research, so I went to Notre Dame where I majored in chemistry and then to graduate school in biochemistry at Caltech. I eventually discovered that lab research did not offer enough people interaction, so I left with a Masters and lots of questions about my future. I took some time off to travel and backpack and teach. Finally, after a fortuitous meeting with some medical students from Michigan on a trail in Glacier National Park in Montana, I realized that I needed to rethink the idea of medicine. At the same time I was developing a strong interest in anthropology, and I decided to join those interests in cross-cultural medicine and global health. I was able to combine medical school at Michigan State with classes in the strong medical-anthropology program there. Then during a combined Pediatrics/Internal Medicine residency at MSU, I was able to spend four months in Uganda in 1987 helping to rebuild a pediatric health center there.

Since then I have worked in global health and travel medicine in Tanzania, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam. I now have spent the last 20 years on the faculty of the University of Washington, primarily seeing patients in an immigrant clinic at the county hospital in Seattle and teaching residents and medical students. Recently, I had a chance to go back to Uganda to consult at Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital, run by the Archdiocese of Mbarara. For the last seven years I have made annual trips to Hue, Vietnam, where I give lectures, teach medical students, and volunteer at a charity clinic run by the Catholic sisters, Daughters of Mary Immaculate. I also try to raise money for both of those Catholic organizations. I met my wife just before starting at MSU, and she followed me through medical school and residency. She works as a clinician in private practice, and we have worked together on several of these global health endeavors.

We have two daughters who have attended an all-girls Catholic high school. My older is a sophomore at Notre Dame, and the younger girl will graduate from high school this year. I have tried to balance my career with varied outside interests. These include a love of Shakespeare, which started after seeing my first play, Twelfth Night, on a CC outing. My love of the outdoors was fostered by a trip west with fellow CC students and Father Paramo in 1968. This included a stay in the Pacific Northwest where I fell in love with Seattle. I continue to backpack and recently completed a six-year plan of hiking all the 500-plus miles of the Pacific Crest Trail in the state of Washington.

My advice to CC students would be to “appreciate the strength of your education as a bedrock foundation for your ultimate goals. Even if you don’t know what you want to do, you will have the tools to help you achieve diverse goals no matter how late you arrive at those decisions. And use the core values of your Catholic education to help guide you in your service to others.”

Since I was an adolescent, the Basilian Fathers and Catholic Central have been a real presence in my life, the only physical interruption being the aforementioned War. Beginning from the time I was an intern, I was privileged to serve the Basilian Fathers and innumerable CC athletes as their physician.

I never retired from the practice of medicine. All in all, it was pretty good.

to non-invasively peer inside the body with stunning 2D and 3D detail to make diagnoses and follow patients. We also have an active Minneapolis Heart Institute Research Foundation, and we all participate in its numerous research studies.

PHIL SCHMITT ’83 ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY Life is good in Commerce, Michigan, right up Wixom Road from CC. This location made it easier to make it to school functions and wrestling matches for son, Steven ’12. My high school sweetheart, Cheryl (Ladywood ‘83), has even started wearing some maroon and gold for daughter, Lizzy (Mercy ‘14). I work at Huron Valley Sinai Hospital which is also in Commerce and part of the DMC system. I have a busy orthopedic surgery practice and do total joint replacements, and I have a little niche as a national leader in Hip Resurfacing. I have been the team doctor for the Huron Valley School System for the past 14 years, covering Milford and Lakeland High School games. I will be our orthopedic surgery national president in 2013 and currently serve on the board of the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics.

Medicine has given me the opportunity to live in many parts of our great country.

After Hillsdale College and Michigan State, we lived in Boston and Oklahoma City before coming back to Michigan. The lessons learned at CC have given me the tools to adapt and thrive wherever we have lived and worked. Being involved with CC now with Steven has renewed the feelings of community strength and brotherhood that I felt 30 years ago when I arrived at Breakfast Drive. I have always felt that I was given a great opportunity to see success and learn from success at CC and to know that success was expected of us all for having been included.

Medicine is a wonderful profession, passion and life! I get to fix people and help people when they are most vulnerable and helpless. God gave me a gift to help people, and CC gave me a gift to strive to do as well as those before me.

As for my other outside activities, I love being with my family and friends. I also enjoy exercising, playing golf, pheasant hunting, Nordic skate skiing in the winter, and biking and walking in the other seasons. I listen to a wide variety of books on CD while driving and look forward to stealing an occasional afternoon nap.

My advice for someone going into Medicine is to be curious and ask questions, enjoy continuous self-improvement, learn to think critically, and embrace the challenges of caring for patients. You’ll also need to be comfortable with hard work and uncertainty, as your career, like mine, will need to be flexible in more ways than you can possibly imagine. No matter how medicine evolves though, I think the key to our enjoyment will be our personal relationships with patients as we try to help them. I am grateful to Catholic Central and it’s tradition of teaching “Goodness, Discipline and Knowledge” for helping give me the right start in my life.

TERRY LONGE ’72 CARDIOLOGY After graduating from Catholic Central in 1972, the University of Michigan in 1976, and Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1981, I completed my Internal Medicine residency at William Beaumont Hospital in 1984 and my Cardiology Fellowship at Northwestern University in 1987. I’ve been a cardiologist at the Minneapolis Heart Institute since 1987 – 25 years! We’ve grown from 13 to over 45 cardiologists, and we also have ten cardiac and vascular surgeons. We all practice together on a single large campus – the Minneapolis Heart Institute at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital – and see patients in over 35 different “Outreach” communities. I was trained as an Invasive Cardiologist, but I had to transition to Non-Invasive Cardiology after a back surgery in 1992. Far from being disappointed, I feel I was given an opportunity to experience some of the most amazing advances in Cardiology during the rest of my career. I have a busy clinical practice with an emphasis on prevention and valvular heart disease, I help teach medicine residents and cardiology fellows, and I also work in Cross Sectional Imaging, which uses Echocardiography, Cardiac MRI, and CT Coronary and Vascular Angiography

I met my wife, Barb, at Beaumont Hospital during my very last night call. We’ve been married 26 years now and have five teenagers. Our oldest two will be attending Catholic colleges this fall. My four girls are avid “Pony Clubbers,” who love to fearlessly gallop their horses across grassy fields and leap over large obstacles at great personal risk. They also enjoy rolling up their sleeves and doing all the hard work of caring and helping pay for their horses. My son is in Boy Scouts and has completed all his Eagle requirements except his project. I volunteer as an Adult Leader, Merit Badge Counselor, and Eagle Advisor for his troop. We’re currently training for a 10-day hike at Philmont Scout Camp in New Mexico this summer, which is one of the grandest high adventure trips a Boy Scout can make.

Hello Father Paramo. I’m Patrick Dimmer, ‘90. I was lucky enough to have you for one challenging class.

I saw a note in the Winter 2012 edition of the Aluminator that you were planning to do an article about “unusual or groundbreaking work” in the medical profession.

I’d have to say that my volunteer work is unusual, though not groundbreaking.

I am a co-founder and officer of a non-profit organization called Arbor Quest Unlimited (http://arborquest.org). We provide tree climbing programs for people with disabilities. Most of our programs take place at summer camps for kids with disabilities. For instance, in June we climbed with a group of kids who are on ventilators at a camp in Cleveland. We were able to set them up so that their ventilator hangs below them while they hang out in the tree.

I don’t know if your article is going to focus only on physicians, or if it will include other medical professions. I am currently a physical therapist with the Farmington Public Schools. After CC, I got a BS at U of M and then a Master’s (in PT) at Duke.

I became Board Certified in Pediatric PT in 2001. Thanks for your efforts to keep us alumni up-to-date with the Aluminator!

Alan Omilian ‘05 Memorial Scholarship Fund Dear Catholic Central Alumni, Family and Friends: I hope this note finds you well. Last year, my oldest son, Alan, passed away at the age of 22 years old. He died as a result of Muscular Dystrophy. Although his passing has shaken me to my core, I have discovered how strong this core is, a core you and I partially share from what we learned from Catholic Central High School.

Even though Alan passed at such a young age, I was able to provide him with a chance to also be a part of the CC Brotherhood. He graduated in 2005. Alan could not walk or use his arms Alan Omilian ‘05 and family. while at C.C. but refused to be defined by his pain. He chose to live in faith and hope. He always challenged himself to be the best and projected himself toward his dreams, minimizing as much as possible his constant pain and physical limitations. After four years at C.C., Alan was a National Merit Scholar, an AP Scholar, Gabriel Richard recipient all four years, cumulative grade point average of 4.56, winner of writing contests, Editor in Chief of the School Newspaper, and the best informed sports fan anyone ever met. He earned his Bachelor Degree from The University of Michigan in 2010, before he passed away.

When Alan graduated from C.C., I wanted to thank Father Richard Ranalletti, then Principal, for all he did to make the C.C. years the highlight of Alan’s life.

Instead, Father thanked me for allowing Alan to attend C.C. and make it a better place. Honestly, that response truly shocked me. I always focused upon what Alan needed and never thought about the positive influence Alan was having upon those around him.

C.C. now wants to keep this influence alive for years to come. I write to request your support for an exciting new Scholarship Fund – the Alan Omilian ‘05 Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes one C.C. student per year who demonstrates the character traits found in Alan. The scholarship qualifications raise awareness of human qualities not easily measured by statistics but readily observed to leave deep and profound impacts upon the lives of others. The qualifying characteristics are: • Thirsting for a wide range of knowledge, forever curious • Overcoming serious personal circumstances in a positive way • Raising the standard for accomplishment through personal achievement • Living life with a passion, cherishing every moment as if it could be your last one • Focusing upon others and serving others in spite of your own needs The intention of the Scholarship is to each year provide $4,000 to a Junior who is selected as a recipient.

The money would be applied to Senior Year tuition. In order to achieve this level of award, the Fund needs to raise $100,000 to be managed by the Detroit Catholic Central Endowment Trust. We hope to fully fund this within the next six months.

Bobby C Forever Memorial Scholarship Fund On the morning of April 16, 2012 a group of very special people were shocked by the stunning and unexpected news of the loss of classmate, colleague and best friend when word arrived of the passing of Bob Cipriano – or Bobby C as he is affectionately known to this group of former CMU Chippewas and college comrades.

By the morning of April 20, 2012 this group of very special friends, led by Bradley Waite, contacted Catholic Central High School with the idea that they wanted to do something in Bob’s honor. They needed to do something in Bob’s honor! And so was born the Bobby C Forever Memorial Scholarship Fund. The Bobby C Forever Memorial Scholarship will be awarded each and every year to a qualified student, in good standing, who has documented financial need and has faced some extreme adversity in his young life.

He had been admitted two weeks earlier for congestive heart failure. He was in his 83rd year, the 61st of religious life, and the 53rd of his priesthood. Fr. Gardner had been a teacher at CC when he was a student for the Basilian priesthood. He returned in a time of need to become the 16th principal of CC from 1995 to 1997.

Bernard (HB) Gardner was born September 25, 1929, in Fairport, NY, the ninth of eleven children. His elementary and secondary education was in the Fairport Public Schools. He entered the Basilian St. Michael’s College, Toronto in 1949. The following year he entered the Basilian Community by entering St. Basil’s Novitiate, in Rochester, NY. He professed first vows as a Basilian in 1951. He then returned to St. Michael’s and earned a B.A. from the University of Toronto.

He was assigned to Catholic Central High School, Detroit, MI, as a scholastic for two years before returning to Toronto to begin his Theological Studies. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1959. Following completion of theological Studies in 1960, he began over 50 years of ministry, primarily in the apostolate of Christian education. Over the years he was assigned to the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, St. Basil’s Seminary and the University of St. Michael’s College in Toronto, the University of St. Thomas in Houston, TX, Aquinas Institute in Rochester, NY, and Catholic Central High School. After he left here, he served as religious superior of several Basilian houses in Ontario. He will be missed by his many friends and fellow Basilians.

Kyle Cooper ’12 Wins the Rev. James H. Whelan Award Kyle Cooper ’12, from Livonia, was recently presented with one of Catholic Central’s most prestigious honors, the Rev. James H. Whelan Award.

The Whelan Award, named in honor of Catholic Central’s fourth principal, Rev. James H. Whelan, C.S.B., is given annually to the senior who has excelled academically, is an outstanding athlete and is looked upon by his peers as a Christian gentleman.

James Haubert ’12, from Farmington Hills, was recently named the class Valedictorian and presented with one of Catholic Central’s most prestigious honors, the Rev. Daniel L. Dillon Award.

Kyle is a two-sport captain, lettering in both football and basketball. He earned All-League and All-Catholic honors during his senior football season while leading the team to the State Finals.

Kyle was also a three-time All-Academic selection, three-time All-League selection, two-time All-Catholic selection and two-time All-State selection in basketball. Kyle is also a member of the National Honor Society. He graduated with a 4.57 G.P.A. and will continue his education at Hillsdale College where he received a scholarship to play basketball.

The Dillon Award, named in honor of Catholic Central’s first principal, Rev. Daniel L. Dillon, C.S.B., is given annually to the senior with the highest cumulative grade point average over four years.

Jim graduated with a 5.03 G.P.A. and is currently enrolled at the University of Michigan. While at CC, Jim was a member of the State Champion and National Runner-up Academic Team.

Class of 2012 Commencement Catholic Central’s 2012 Commencement Ceremony was held on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor.

Co-Senior Class Presidents and Masters of the Ceremony were Ryan Goulet ’12 and Dean Sansovich ’12. Dillon Award Winner Jimmy Haubert ’12 gave the Salutatory Address, and Whelan Award Winner Kyle Cooper ’12 gave the Valedictory Address.

The Dedicatory Presentation was given by Co-Student Council President Brett Mizzi ’12. Bishop Michael Byrnes ’76 gave the address to the graduates. Our best wishes and congratulations to the newest members of the Alumni Association.

Career Guidance The Career Guidance Committee of the Alumni Association hosted multiple days during the last school year to speak to members of the sophomore class about various career fields. The objective is to inform the students about certain career fields and either peak their interest or help them decide if they should look in another direction. The sophomores are given the option to attend two of these talks during the school days on which each is offered.

Alumni volunteer to speak to the students about their professions and help them understand each field better. They also help the students to begin thinking about the best educational path to achieve their career goals.

2012 CC | National Signing Day

CC Has Three Inducted into the Catholic League Hall of Fame Three fine representatives of CC athletics were inducted into the Catholic High School League Hall of Fame on June 11, 2012, at the Fern Hill Country Club in Clinton Township, Michigan. Mike Martin ‘08 and Ryan Houska ‘08 were inducted because of their stellar athletic careers in both high school and college. Roy Dudas was also inducted as a coach.

Mike Martin graduated from the University of Michigan where he was a four-year starter for the Wolverine Football Team. Mike was recently drafted by the NFL’s Tennessee Titans. While at CC, Mike excelled at football, wrestling and track & field.

He was named the Gatorade Player of the Year after the 2007 football season, won two individual wrestling state championships, was a two-time state champion in the shot put and still holds the school record for the shot put.

Ryan Houska was a three sport athlete at CC, earning letters in football, basketball and baseball. During his senior year, he collected All-League, All-Catholic and All-Metro honors as captain of all three sports teams. Ryan went on to play football at Cornell University in the Ivy League, where he earned Honorable Mention All-Ivy League honors in 2011.

He was named the team Offensive MVP in 2010.

Roy Dudas was inducted for his long coaching career at CC. Coach Dudas is an assistant coach on the Varsity Football Team and spent many years coaching the sprinters on the track team. Roy is also a math teacher at CC.

ACADEMIC TEAM RESULTS Shamrocks Capture Another State Title On April 17, 2012, Michigan State University hosted the NAQT Michigan State Championship, with 23 teams from 15 schools from around Michigan competing. Detroit Catholic Central flexed their mental muscle against the best in the state and emerged as the 2012 Michigan Academic State Champions.

The fighting Shamrocks took down Holland High School in the finals. Coaches Jason Jones, Christopher Gismondi ‘96, and Ben Herman ‘98 led the young Shamrocks to victory. Under their tutelage James Haubert ‘12, Bobby Dorigo Jones ‘12, Connor Gibney ‘12, Aaron Walters ‘12, Brandon Roach ‘13, Matt Barnauskus ‘13, Collin Parks ‘13, Mark Karabajakian ‘13, Paul Hamilton ‘13, Mitchell Vitez ‘13, Evan Creel-Gould ‘13, and Jack Watts ‘15 became back-to-back State Champions. The State Tournament Committee selected Bobby Dorigo Jones and Brandon Roach to the Class A All-State Quiz Bowl Team. These choices were made by the moderators and judges of the competition as the most outstanding players of the tournament.

Congratulations to the 2012 Detroit Catholic Central High School 2012 Academic Team State Champions. They and the three other top teams qualified for nationals NAQT HSNCT in Atlanta, Georgia.

NAQT – Second in National Championship Tournament The NAQT National Championship Tournament took place on May 27 in Atlanta, Georgia. Our team lost to Bellarmine Prep of San Jose, California in the morning by basically one tossup. They then had to do an amazing climb back up through the loser’s bracket to get another shot at the title, which they did with very high scores. Being a double elimination contest meant CC would have to beat Bellarmine Prep twice. They beat them on the last question in the afternoon, but didn’t have enough left to beat them the second time.

Joe Nora ’90 | Head Varsity Soccer Coach Retiring Joe Nora ’90 has decided to retire as Head Varsity Soccer Coach. Coach Nora became the Head Varsity Soccer Coach in 2002 and has compiled an 89-65-36 record after ten years at the helm. During that time, the Soccer Team won three Balconi Tournament Championships, two MHSAA District Championships in 2004 and 2007 and maintained an average G.P.A. of 3.2. Over 15 players have earned All-State honors, including two Dream Team members. Three players earned the Brother George Sinan Scholar-Athlete Award for the CHSL, and one player won the Fr. James Whelan Award. Coach Nora also received numerous Coach of the Year honors, including Michigan High School Coach of the Year in 2007. Furthermore, Joe served as Division 1 Regional Chairman from 2004-2011. Perhaps the greatest achievement under Coach Nora is 19 athletes earning scholarships to play in college and one player going to play professionally in Europe.

Coach Nora said, “I loved my time coaching soccer at CC. I was blessed with players who gave their hearts, blood and sweat for the team while excelling in the classroom. You will always be my brothers!”

Family Fest

It’s Family Fest time again! For the 21st consecutive year, the kick-off event of the school year will be presented by the Mothers’ Club, Dads’ Club and Alumni Association on Sunday, September 9, 2012. Keeping with tradition, we will begin with Mass at Noon in the Chapel, followed by food tasting at 1:00 pm in the cafeteria. In the main gym, entertainment will be provided by the Catholic Central Jazz Band.

Over 25 quality restaurants will serve their specialties ranging from appetizers to desserts. Many restaurants will offer a sampling of their main menu items. The price of admission is the same as it has been for the last 11 years: $15 for adults, $5 for students aged 13 to 18 years and children age 12 and under are free. Tickets should be purchased before the event. Simply mail in your check marked “Family Fest” to the school, and your tickets will be waiting at the Will Call table the day of the event.

Retiring Faculty

Named Teacher of the Year Long-time teacher and coach at CC, Mark Gagnon recently received the Gabriel Richard Teacher of the Year Award from the Michigan Chapter of the Catholic Library Association. Mr. Gagnon has taught at CC since the fall of 1984 and has been the Science Department Chairman for many years.

He received this honor because of his high usage of the Library Media Center’s print, digital and archival collections in his Biology courses. He has infused a digital curriculum into the classroom in collaboration with our Library Media Center.

Mark is the founder and moderator of the Shotgun Club and the Adventure Club. He also has coached numerous sports at CC including basketball, football and lacrosse.
