A Message from the President Dear Alumni and Friends, Anyone looking for bad news about the Church during the month of June would have had an easy time finding it. The papers had big stories about abuse cases and various meetings of the right and the left with their particular visions about where the Church is headed. A meeting at Cobo Center said the Church as we know it will either die or is already dead unless it updates and becomes more relevant. A competing meeting in Livonia said we have to return to the old ways, or we will wither away.

I have a different piece of news that won’t get much coverage but will have a different kind of effect on the Church; one that leads to hope instead of despair. Three members of the Catholic Central Class of 2011 have committed themselves to the initial stages of formation that lead to ordination to the priesthood.

John Vinton ’11 will be attending college in Minnesota in preparation for priestly ordination for the Diocese of Lansing. Christian Burke ’11 and David Brish ’11 have been accepted into the Associate Program of the Basilian Fathers and will make their first formal commitment after a retreat this summer.

It has been a very long time since three members of the same CC class began studying for the priesthood, and I am so happy that Catholic Central is a place where young men can hear God’s call and have the courage to respond. Now it’s a long way from high school graduation to ordination. It is at least eight years for a diocesan priest and more likely nine or ten for a Basilian. Whether any or all persevere is something only God knows, but they have begun the journey and that is a cause for joy.

This issue of the Aluminator contains several articles about CC graduates who have spent their lives as priests. They are some remarkable men. One of our oldest Alumni, Monsignor Ferdinand deCneudt ’31, recently passed away and made a bequest to his Alma Mater that will significantly help our tuition assistance efforts. Others have made wonderful contributions to the Church and to society. We are proud that their numbers are in the hundreds. And now we also have our first Alumni bishop, Bishop Michael Byrnes ’76! We look forward to having our Alumnus visit soon.

John, Christian and David have begun a discernment process to see if the priesthood is the way that God is leading them. They will have many people and situations telling them that it’s not for them, that it’s irrelevant, that it’s hopeless. We already know they are independent thinkers, or they wouldn’t even have made this first step. What we can offer them, as well as Bishop Byrnes and all our graduates who have answered God’s call, is the prayer of the Church used at commitment ceremonies, “May God, Who has begun this good work in you, bring it to its fulfillment.”

THE PSYCHEDELIC ’60s 1965 – Fr. Bob Schikora was ordained a priest on May 20, 2011 at the Cathedral of Mary of the Assumption in Saginaw. Fr. Bob entered the seminary for the Catholic Diocese of Saginaw in May, 2007. He has been studying at Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Connecticut for the diocese of Saginaw, Michigan. He graduated with a Masters in Divinity on May 6, 2011, and returned to Michigan to stay. He celebrated his First Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Plymouth.

After ordination he was assigned to a parish near Saginaw. (Read more about Vocations at CC on page 18.)

THE HAPPENING ’90s 1990 – MAJ. JAMES BERNTHAL USMC was in town to help with the annual Student Council Leadership Workshop in June. Jim developed the SALTE program (Student Athlete Leadership Training and Education) which he was able to use to help our students grow in their various leadership roles.

1990 - Jason Kolka organizes an annual golf outing with all proceeds benefiting the Neonatal Unit at St. Joseph Hospital. The “Kolka Klassic,” as it has come to be known, raised $14,000 this year. Jason is the son of Brian Kolka, a retired social studies teacher from CC.

1991 – DR. STEVEN SHANNON is currently an associate professor of nuclear engineering at North Carolina State University. Steve recently visited CC while he was in town and spoke to Fr. Jim O’Neill, C.S.B. and his earth science classes. He visited Fr. Ray Paramo, C.S.B., who taught him physics and social justice, and discussed the ethical concerns of scientists.

1998 – ADAM MURRAY was married to Maiko Ueno on January 30, 2009, in Arlington, Virginia. They have a son, Luke Taiga, who was born on September 13, 2010, in Tokyo, Japan.

Adam is currently a member of the U.S. Foreign Service, Department of State.

He is assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Rangoon, Burma.

1999 – PHIL DICKERSON deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, in December, 2010, for a one-year assignment as part of the headquarters staff for Unites States Forces – Iraq (USF-I). Phil is a Captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps, assigned to the XVIII Airborne Corps, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Prior to joining the US Army JAG Corps in July 2009, Phil was an associate with the law firm of Edwards, Angell, Palmer & Dodge in Boston, Massachusetts.

He graduated from Boston University School of Law in 2006 and earned his undergraduate degree in Finance from Michigan State University in 2003.

2007 – CARL NELSON recently graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Bioengineering from Rice University. Carl now works at Noblis, Inc. doing governmental research in northern Virginia.

2007 – DAVID POWELL recently graduated Cum Laude from Ferris State University. He is now enrolled at the Ferris State University College of Pharmacy. He plans on joining the Army and working at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, focusing on nuclear medicine.

2008 – DAVID CORDS is currently attending the University of Michigan and was selected to intern on Capital Hill in Washington, D.C. He will be working for Congressman Thaddeus McCotter ’83, who represents Michigan’s 11th District.

U of M Alumnus Receives Army’s Greatest Invention Award Protecting Vehicles and Soldiers from Electrocution Michael Rose ‘03, a 2007 Mechanical Engineering graduate of the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and a graduate of Detroit Catholic Central High School, was the lead design engineer for the MRAP Overhead Wire Mitigation (OWM) project that recently won an Army’s Greatest Invention award for 2009.

Every day, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles save soldiers lives by protecting them from Improvised Explosive Devices, more commonly known as IEDs. In addition to having V-shaped hulls, MRAP vehicles also have a high ground clearance to further protect the soldier from blasts.

However, due to their height, these vehicles often get entangled in low-hanging high-voltage power lines when operating in urban areas.

This not only endangers the crew, but also threatens the onboard equipment. In addition, these vehicles frequently tear down the wires completely, damaging the local infrastructure and aggravating the local population.

In theater, many soldiers tried to address this problem by building makeshift wire-clearing kits from purchased or salvaged components.

However, many kits could not withstand the rigor of daily operations and often caused more problems than they solved.

In response to these issues, the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) tasked Rose to begin development on the MRAP Overhead Wire Mitigation (OWM) project. The goal was to create a simple, safe and effective solution to the low-hanging wire problems while accommodating the many vehicle variations within the MRAP fleet. “Ideally, the kit would be made from non-metallic off-the-shelf components, have minimal impact on the vehicle antennas and occupant visibility, and be easy to install and maintain,” Rose said in a 2008 interview.

The OWM team, including engineers from TARDEC as well as many other organizations across the Army, collaborated with soldiers in theater to create an objective OWM kit made from chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (more commonly known as CPVC) piping, fiberglass poles and bolt-on brackets. The nonconductive CPVC guide rails, supported by the fiberglass poles, arch over the vehicle in order to push the low-hanging wires away from the vehicle as it passes underneath. “It doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to work,” said Rose.

After many tests and design iterations, the final design was approved and sent to the Blue Grass Army Depot for mass production. To date, 4,200 OWM kits have been manufactured and fielded. “The soldiers love the simplicity of the design, ease of maintenance and the ability to go in reverse under wires. More requests are rolling in from theater to adapt this kit to other vehicles as well,” Rose said.

In early December, the project was recognized for its success and received recognition as one of the Army’s Greatest Invention (AGI) awardwinners for technologies fielded in 2009.

AGI award winners are selected annually by a panel of non-commissioned officers with recent combat experience. Their decisions are based on several factors including impact on Army capabilities, potential benefits outside the Army and overall inventiveness. Lt. Gen. James Pillsbury, Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Material Command, Dr. Marilyn Freeman, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology, and Dr. Grace Bochenek, Director of U.S. Army TARDEC, presented the award to Rose and his team at the bi-annual Army Science Conference in Orlando, FL. “I am looking forward to many more opportunities to support the warfighter,” Rose said. “We continue to do everything we can to ensure our soldiers return home safely.”

Colonel Marc Stephen Wilson is a native of Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Detroit (Distinguished Military Graduate) in 1986 and was commissioned Regular Army into the Signal Corps. He was stationed in Augsburg, Germany. He served on Active Duty for four years.

Colonel Wilson is now on Active Duty in the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Program. Prior to volunteering for deployment to Afghanistan, he served as Joint/DoD Force Integration Manager for the Office of the Chief of the Army Reserve (OCAR) and before that as the Force Modernization Branch Chief for Headquarters, Department of the Army G-8.

In addition to serving in the Functional Area 50, force management career field, Colonel Wilson also is an Acquisition Corps member and is Level III certified in Program Management and Contracting.

Other previous military assignments include: Assistant Professor of Military Science with the University of Iowa, Product Line ManagerForce Projection, Program and Budget Analyst for the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army, Detachment Commander, Assistant Operations Officer, Executive Officer, and Platoon Leader.

Colonel Wilson holds a Master of Science degree in General Administration from Central Michigan University. He is a graduate of the Signal Officer Basic Course, Advanced Course, the United States Army Command and General Staff College, (continued next page)

Colonel Wilson is married to Gayla Marie Wilson (15 years). They have three daughters, Breana (11), Trinity (8) and Juliana (6). They currently reside in Manassas, VA.

Ryan Majsak ’11 Wins Rev. James H. Whelan Award Ryan Majsak ’11, from Livonia, was recently presented with one of Catholic Central’s most prestigious honors, the Rev. James H. Whelan Award. The Whelan Award, named in honor of Rev. James H. Whelan, C.S.B. (CC’s fourth principal), is given annually to the senior who has excelled academically, is an outstanding athlete, and is looked upon by his peers as a Christian gentleman.

Tim is the son of Thomas and Kimberly Hoffman and the brother of Scott ’09.

He was also named a 2011 National Merit Commended Scholar, voted Senior Class Treasurer, and was President of the Latin Club. He graduated with a 4.67 G.P.A. He will continue his education at either the University of Notre Dame or Northwestern University.

Spotlighting Alumni & Members of Our CC Family

Journalist and Author Bryan Gruley ’75 Talks of His Latest Novel An Accidental Trilogy [What he has to say as a journalist and novelist is of interest to us as readers. His two novels are of the kind that engrosses you, not only in a story, but also in a culture. Those that know me will be amused to hear that after reading his first book, Starvation Lake, I wanted to put on my skates and try to become a hockey goalie.

Of course I also wanted to sculpt marble after reading Stone’s The Agony and the Ecstasy. – Ed.]

About the Author

I just gave my editor the manuscript for The Skeleton Box, the third Starvation Lake novel. Assuming she likes it, it’s likely to be published next February. I’m eager to get started on the edits and rewrites, which is my favorite part of the writing process. Once the story is down on paper, I enjoy moving things around, adding details here and there, and best of all, getting rid of stuff. When I’m cutting, I know the story is getting better.

Now in its eleventh printing, Starvation Lake was nominated for an Edgar Award for Best First Novel by the Mystery Writers of America, and won the Anthony, Barry, and Strand awards. The Hanging Tree was named a Michigan Notable Book for 2011 and a Kirkus Reviews Best Mystery of 2010, and has been nominated for a Barry Award for best paperback original. Reviewers have compared Bryan to novelist Dennis Lehane.

While I never planned to write a trilogy, wherein the books form a logical story arc, The Skeleton Box does complete a sort of trilogy, in thematic and other ways, with the first two books, Starvation Lake and The Hanging Tree. I’m proud of it, but I won’t love it until I’m done with all the edits and rewrites.

Secretly, though, Bryan would love to be compared favorably to Detroit Red Wings stars Johan Franzen and Pavel Datsyuk. He’s been playing hockey since he was a boy growing up in Detroit and still plays regularly at Johnny’s Ice House in Chicago.

The next book will complete my three-book contract with Simon & Schuster’s Touchstone imprint. Not sure what’s next, but if I return to Starvation Lake for a fourth novel, I’m pretty certain that I’ll be jumping forward in time by seven or eight years, so that Gus Carpenter will be in his 40s, married, perhaps with children, and that the town will have changed in ways that will enable me to make a sort of fresh start, without losing all of the familiarity.

He has won numerous awards for his writing and reporting. He wrote one of the front-page stories about the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that won the Journal a 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News. “War Stories,” his November 25, 2003, tale about a black World War II lieutenant who saved a young Holocaust victim, was an alternate finalist in the Pulitzer feature writing category.

Or maybe I’ll do something else entirely Meantime, I’m looking forward to public appearances.

[Bryan made many visits to places in Michigan and in other states to promote his books, but on Saturday, April 16 he went to Fox Run Retirement Community, Novi, Mich. He says of this visit: ”This one’s special because my Dad spent his last few years at Fox Run before he died in February.”]

Bryan Gruley is the critically acclaimed author of Starvation Lake: A Mystery, and the sequel, The Hanging Tree. His third book, The Skeleton Box, is scheduled to be published early in 2012.

Hockey plays a big role in the life of the fictional town of Starvation Lake, as do two of Bryan’s other passions, northern Michigan and newspapers. Bryan had his first newspaper job at the nearby Antrim County News in the summer of 1978. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame in 1979, Bryan worked for newspapers in Brighton, Howell, Kalamazoo and Detroit, Michigan, before joining The Wall Street Journal Washington Bureau in 1995.

Bryan is the author of a prize-winning non-fiction book, Paper Losses: A Modern Epic of Greed and Betrayal at America’s Two Largest Newspaper Companies. (Grove Atlantic, 1993) He’s also an amateur musician who sings, plays guitar, and composes his own songs. They include For a Son, which he wrote after the 2002 death of his friend and Journal colleague, Danny Pearl.

Now the Chicago Bureau Chief for The Wall Street Journal, Bryan lives on the city’s north side with his wife, Pam. They have three grown children, Joel, Kaitlin and Danielle.

George Colburn ’55 Video Interviews on Eisenhower’s Presidency to be Preserved In-depth interviews conducted in the early 1990s with more than 100 of President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s top administration officials, family, friends, White House reporters, political allies and opponents and foreign military and diplomatic leaders will now be preserved for use by future scholars and researchers.

The announcement of the tape preservation project was made by George A. Colburn, Ph.D. ’55, a historian who conducted the interviews and serves as President and Executive Producer of CLS, a Michigan-based, non-profit firm that specializes in media education programming.

Stanley M. Rumbough, a businessman from Palm Beach, Florida, is funding a project at Contemporary Learning Systems, Inc. that will convert almost 500 tapes from an analog format to a digital format that will preserve the interviews into the foreseeable future. Without the conversion, the tapes would be subject to “data rot” and lost to future researchers, CLS stated.

In addition to Colburn’s interviews with domestic sources, including four former U.S. presidents, the tapes include interviews with political, diplomatic and military leaders of England, France, West Germany and the U.S.S.R. These interviews were initiated in 1990 during Eisenhower Centenary events held in Abilene, Kansas, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and Moscow and continued through 1996 when Colburn produced a five-hour television series and a 20-part classroom series for two Disney companies.

Rumbough was a co-founder in 1951 of “Citizens for Eisenhower,” an independent, grassroots organization that helped persuade Eisenhower – then NATO’s Supreme Commander - to run for President. After “Ike” won the GOP nomination, “Citizens for Eisenhower” aided his 1952 nomination and election campaigns. During Eisenhower’s first administration, Rumbough served in the Dept. of Commerce and the White House.

Colburn’s interviews led to three one-hour, primetime television specials in 1991, 1993 and 1995 for the Discovery and Disney networks.

These TV Specials were hosted by John Chancellor, the late NBC news anchor and commentator. The five-hour series that first aired

on the Disney Channel in the fall of 1996 was hosted by Gen. Colin Powell (U.S. Army, Ret.).

Beginning in 2003, Colburn began a new round of interviews with witnesses to the Eisenhower presidential years and with scholars who had recently completed research on aspects of the Eisenhower presidency that had not been examined previously. These interviews are to be featured in a planned two-hour television special on Ike entitled, “From Warrior to Peacekeeper, 1950 – 1960.” SMC hopes to have the program on the air during the 2012 presidential primary campaigns, but a firm broadcast date will depend on obtaining final funding for final editing, Colburn said.

With regard to the preserved interviews, Colburn stated that he hoped he could identify a home for the “historic interviews” with key witnesses to the Eisenhower presidential years – most of them now deceased – before the end of the year. He said he was seeking a library or museum for the preserved interviews “where they will be well organized, kept in a proper storage facility, and made easily available to scholars, researchers, students and interested members of the general public.”

CC Alumni Successfully Work for MLB Pensions In the Winter 2005 edition of the Aluminator, an item was presented on how CC grads Al R. Moran ‘57, the late John J. McHale ’39, Kevin Cummings ’90 and James Acho ’88, litigated with Major League Baseball on behalf of pensions for players who retired from 1947 to 1980. These players had been excluded from pensions and medical benefits under old rules. Moran and McHale were former players who along with almost a thousand others had contributed much to the formation of the national pastime. Cummings and Acho were two young lawyers who undertook the project.

Hundreds of hours of legal work later, MLB Commissioner, Bud Selig, announced on April 21, 2011, that the pre-1980 players will now receive a pension. In a press release of that date he expressed the opinion that this was the right thing to do for these former players, who contributed much to the game’s history.

This is a very significant development in the sports business world, and it is due in very large part to the work of these four alumni.

Jim Acho adds in a recent email, “Also, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that CC grad Kevin Wheeler ‘90 (nephew of Fr. John Wheeler, C.S.B. ‘57) of The Sporting News and [TV station] KMOX championed this project and gave it the initial coverage that helped set the wheels in motion.”

The Annual Alumni Dinner, thanks to Bob Forte ’69 and the Dinner Committee honoring Greg Normandin ’78 at the Livonia Embassy Suites, was a great success.

The Silent Majority Committee chaired by Dennis Antoniotti ’68 held successful events in Florida, Chicago and New York. The Silent Majority Committee has been very instrumental in bringing together out-of-state Alumni and keeping them in touch with developments at CC. The Charity Gaming event at Northville Downs was also very successful and has proved to be a great source of funding for the Alumni Association budget as well as for scholarship money. This event requires a large number of volunteers, and their service is much appreciated.

Every year I look forward to the Boys’ Bowl Alumni Mass and Breakfast.

Visiting with Alumni from every generation is inspirational. Other upcoming events that Alumni can participate in include several spiritual programs, the reunion weekend, a CC retreat, business and career activities, and the Alumni Basketball League. Everyone who wishes to contribute their talents can contact CC’s Alumni Office.

Fellow Alumni, As we begin the 2011-2012 school year, my hope is that we can continue to remain involved with all that is happening at Catholic Central. I think that we can all agree that CC remains on top in everything that she does. Our enrollment continues to stay above one thousand, which is especially remarkable in view of the economy. It is truly a blessing that Catholic education remains so high on the list of priorities for our current families.

Our students continue to demonstrate excellence in the classroom. Furthermore, our athletic teams, our academic team, our band and all of our other clubs and activities continue to represent the values and traditions which were set over the past 82 years.

Our school spirit remains as high as when Fr. Clemens and Fr. Donoher walked the halls. That is perhaps the most endearing thing to see. The Shamrock Pride that each one of us has within continues to grow in the hearts of our students and future Alumni.

The only way to ensure the continued success of our Alma Mater is to remain connected and to stay involved with the happenings of the school. So I challenge all of us to continue to do so.

The constant presence of Alumni helps to keep Catholic Central tradition alive in all that we do.

We have a number of events and reunions during the coming fall and winter months. The annual Hall of Fame Evening is on September 17. We are hosting an All-Classes Homecoming Event on Saturday, October 1. The Alumni Basketball League begins in January, and we have the annual Florida Reunion on March 24. 31st Annual Athletic Department Golf Outing On June 20, 2011, the Athletic Department hosted its 31st Annual Golf Outing at Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon. Athletic Director Aaron Babicz ’93 and Nancy Johnson ran the outing very smoothly and successfully. This outing is the one major fundraiser for the Athletic Department, used to budget each of the School’s 14 sports programs. Congratulations to Ed Pobur ’81 and the team from Cadillac of Novi for winning this year’s scramble. Also, special congratulations to Bill Doyle ’69 for getting a hole-in-one and winning a 2-year lease on a Lincoln MKZ from Varsity Lincoln!

Chicago Reunion The 5th Annual Chicago Reunion was held on Wednesday, June 15, at the Chicago Cubs’ game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

We met at the Captain Morgan Club at Wrigley Field prior to the game for food and drinks. Approximately 40 Alumni and CC family members battled the inclement weather and attended the reunion.

This reunion has become perhaps our most successful out-of-state reunion over the last couple of years. We are incredibly proud that the CC Alumni in the Chicago area are continuing to represent their Alma Mater in and around the Windy City.

Florida Reunion The 3rd Annual Florida Reunion was held in Venice, Florida, on March 19, 2011. Thanks to the generosity of Mike Pachota ’71 and Greg Novack ’71, we were able to gather at the beautiful, water side restaurant, Sharky’s on the Pier. Mike and Greg own and operate Sharky’s and helped us organize the reunion, while eliminating a large part of the cost as well. The food was great; the weather was even better! Many thanks to the staff at Sharky’s on the Pier for taking special care of us.

We had almost 70 people in attendance to share laughs and stories about their glory days at CC. The Class of 1955 was well represented with eleven members present. That is because the Florida Reunion is a spinoff from the former 1955 Reunion hosted by Terry Brady ’55 and Ray Billinghurst ’55. Fr. Richard Ranalletti, C.S.B., President of CC, Dan Collins ’84, the Director of Advancement, and Mike Carrier ’06, the Director of Alumni Relations, also made the trip down.

Cultivating Basilian Vocations at Catholic Central High School

by Fr. Jefferson Thompson, C.S.B. At Catholic Central, where we enjoy the presence of our students for only four short years, the Basilian Fathers and the CC family contribute to vocation discernment among the students in a variety of ways.

Theology classes, especially of Juniors and Seniors, are visited from time to time by Basilian vocation directors, Basilian associates and scholastics who are in formation for priestly ordination. Beginning with the upcoming academic year, plans are in progress to invite CC Basilians to visit every theology class and to share their personal stories of their journeys to and through the priesthood. During these visits, students are exposed to a rich mosaic of vocation experiences, perspectives, and personal witness stories. The questions and discussions that are elicited during these presentations range from the profoundly moving to the wildly entertaining. These presentations will also be shared with the Mothers’ Club and the Dads’ Club.

Each year, the CC Guidance Department incorporates a conference on Priesthood and Religious Life as part of its annual Career Conference Series for Sophomores.

This past year, a group of interested administrators, Basilians, faculty members, and board members has begun to meet to discuss fresh ideas and renewed efforts for vocation promotion at CC. They plan to implement several new initiatives during the upcoming academic year.

Since 2007, on the first DRIVE holiday, always a Friday in late February, the Basilian Fathers have been hosting an annual vocation discernment retreat-day-of-reflection in their home. Biography | Bishop Michael J. Byrnes ‘76 CC Alumnus Bishop Michael J. Byrnes, B.S., M.Div., M.A., STL, STD Michael Jude Byrnes was born in 1958 in Detroit to Patrick and Marie Byrnes.

He grew up in Detroit, where he attended St. Mary of Redford elementary and Junior High, and Detroit Catholic Central High School (1972-76). He then attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology in 1979. Active in the Charismatic Renewal movement, he served as office manager for the outreach group Servant Ministries in Ann Arbor from 1985 until 1990. He entered formation at Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit in 1990, where he later earned a Master of Divinity degree and a Master of Arts degree with a concentration in Scripture. He was ordained a priest on May 25, 1996, in Detroit by then-archbishop Cardinal Adam Maida.

Bishop Byrnes began his priestly ministry as associate pastor at St. Joan of Arc Parish in St. Clair Shores and as an adjunct faculty member at Sacred Heart Major Seminary. In 1999 he went to Rome to study at the Pontifical Gregorian University.

He earned his Doctorate in Sacred Theology in 2003.

Returning to Detroit, he joined the faculty of Sacred Heart Major Seminary. In January 2004, he was named vicerector of Sacred Heart Major Seminary and also pastor of Presentation/Our Lady of Victory. He was ordained a bishop on May 5, 2011 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Detroit.

personal vocation witness stories, opportunity for questions and discussion, Eucharist, and of course lunch, dinner, and social time. In preparation for these retreat days, Basilians and CC faculty members surface names of interested students, approach them about their openness to this kind of discernment, and invite them to plan on attending the retreat. The focus is on Juniors and Seniors as they begin to consider their next steps in life after graduation from CC. Over the last few years, about eight to twelve students have been attending these annual retreats, sometimes coming back for a second consecutive year.

This past year, CC was very happy to hear from two Seniors, David Brish ’11 and Christian Burke ’11, that they would like to continue their discernment of a priestly religious vocation with the Basilian Fathers. David and Christian submitted their applications with all the necessary documentation. The Basilian Superior General and his Council accepted both of them as Basilian Associates. The CC Basilian community is blessed to

Bishop Byrnes on his Vocation Fr. Remigius McCoy, a Missionary of Africa and my grandfather’s cousin, was my childhood hero. He was the first to bring the Catholic faith to one of the regions of the country of Ghana in West Africa: the vast majority of the Dagaaba people owe their faith in Christ to his efforts and those of his collaborators.

He would appear at our house in Detroit every few years throughout my youth as he made his way throughout the country making missionary appeals at various parishes. He told stories of prayers for rain miraculously answered, of heroic native catechists who suffered persecution at the hands of pagan religious leaders, and of journeys back and forth to North America made by hitching rides on steamships. To me he was a figure of both great adventure and steadfast commitment to the people he served; and he was the happiest man I have ever known. He died at the age of 95, three years after retiring and returning to his native Canada from the village in Ghana in which he had lived for over sixty years. His example planted in me a seed of understanding that the sure road to happiness involved giving one’s life away in love and service to God and to others.

My own path to the priesthood, and now to the episcopate, has brought its own set of adventures, and there have been many other people – both priests and lay people – who have inspired me along the way. Not every one of the important life-directional decisions were guided by the wisdom of Fr. McCoy, but somehow, through the Spirit’s guidance, I have begun to taste the fruits of a life dedicated to the service of God and His people. A voyage by ship across the ocean is still on the bucket list, and I have claimed intercessory responsibility for neither rain nor dry weather. Yet my life has been something of an adventure thus far, as I have been called to engage a variety of assignments that I had never envisioned. Each has presented its own set of challenges and joys. I would like to say that the joys always outweighed the challenges, but in the end there is only one source of joy that suffices for every challenge: the knowledge that what I am being called to surrender at any moment in life pales in comparison to what Jesus has given to and for me. For Him I am eager to give anything and everything, and in that my happiness is secure.

celebrate their incorporation as Associates of our local house. In late July, David and Christian joined other Basilian Associates for a week-long spiritual retreat in Niagara Falls, Canada. David will attend the University of Michigan in Dearborn, and Christian will be studying at Wayne State University. During their college years, David and Christian will continue to maintain their contact with CC Basilians on a regular basis in both formal and informal ways, ranging from spiritual direction to social gatherings. We pray that they will listen to God speaking to them in the depths of their hearts, and that they will respond wholeheartedly to His will for them. In time, should David and Christian discern that God is indeed calling them to vocations of religious priestly ministry as members of the Basilian Fathers; it will be cause for much rejoicing.

Bishop Ramierez on his Vocation Thoughts from a Former Teacher at CC Many years ago I was invited to come to Catholic Central to speak at a graduation.

I had just been named Bishop a few months prior, and at the time, I was the only Bishop from among the Basilian Fathers.

Since I had taught at CC as a scholastic, that is, a Basilian seminarian, there was much excitement. Graduation that year was at Ford Auditorium in downtown Detroit. I remember ending my address with an appeal for vocations, especially for the Basilian Fathers.

I pointed to my Roman collar and said, “If you become a priest, you will always have a job, and I guarantee it will be a white collar job.”

If I had to do it all over again, I would still choose to be a Basilian and a priest. Actually, my goal never was to become a bishop; that was a complete surprise and a challenge which I readily embraced as a call directly from God to serve in Christ’s Church to the best of my abilities.

I am now facing retirement, which will be a new phase in my life and which will bring with it new adventures. By the way, I was at CC last year and was amazed at the beautiful new school and was much impressed by the quality of community life among my Basilian brothers.

I invite you to consider a vocation as a Basilian. I cannot think of anything more exciting for you!

Bishop Ricardo Ramirez, C.S.B.; Bishop of Las Cruces, NM

Biography | Bishop Ricardo Ramirez Bishop Ricardo Ramirez, C.S.B., B.A., M.A., D.L., D.D. was born in 1936 to Natividad and Maria Espinoza Ramírez in Bay City, Texas, the second of two sons. He attended public schools until he attended the Basilian St. Thomas University in Houston, Texas, where he earned a B.A. After joining the Basilian Fathers he earned an M.A. from the University of Detroit. As a Basilian scholastic (seminarian) he taught a year at CC. He then studied theology in Toronto and Mexico City. He was ordained a priest on December 10, 1966 in Houston, Texas.

After ordination, he worked in Owen Sound, Canada, then worked at the Centro Cultural Aragon in Mexico City, and in Tehuacan, Puebla, Mexico. After serving as Executive Vice President at the Mexican American Cultural Center in San Antonio, Texas, he was made Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of San Antonio in 1981 by Pope John Paul II. In 1982 he was appointed first bishop of the Diocese of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

He has received several honorary degrees and serves on many committees, especially those concerned with justice, civil rights, and Latin American affairs. For example, he has served as a member of the New Mexico Advisory Committee to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (USCCR), and he has served as Chairman of the NCCB Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

Vocations at CC - A View from a Layman

by John Ronayne III ’64 Any Catholic is painfully aware of the decline in religious vocations in the Catholic Church, most notably in the United States and Western Europe. The explanations for the decline are myriad.

It seems clear also that parental attitudes have changed, perhaps dramatically. I recall vividly when as a young boy my two uncles, Fr. Patrick Maloney ‘45 and Fr. Joseph Maloney ‘49 were ordained.

Even to my then young eyes, it was clear that each ordination was an occasion of immense family pride. Times have clearly changed.

In a recent survey of women entering religious life, more than half of those professing final vows reported that a parent or family member had discouraged their religious calling.

Clearly, our school is a Catholic school. More essentially, Catholic Central is and has been from its beginning a Basilian school.

The priestly followers of St. Basil have been a constant for 83 years.

The prospect of a Catholic Central without Basilian priests would have for years been unthinkable. Today, while certainly not imminent, it is not unthinkable. It would be difficult to predict exactly what Catholic Central would be like without Basilians. It is clear, however, that it would be different and that difference would not be good.

The decline in religious vocations at Catholic Central is every bit as marked as it is in the general population. Even more dramatic is the decline in Basilian vocations at Catholic Central. The last Basilian vocation from Catholic Central was Fr. Dennis Noelke ’71.

There are reasons, however, to be continuously optimistic. Earlier this year, every Catholic Central student was surveyed about a variety of issues, including vocations. In response to the question “Have you ever thought about a vocation to the priesthood or religious life?” 5% of the students indicated that they had “seriously” considered a religious vocation. More than 15% said they had less

seriously considered a religious vocation. Transposed to the school’s enrollment, it appears that there are about 50 students now attending Catholic Central who are seriously considering a religious vocation.

There are another 150 or so who could be said to be open to this idea. I think these numbers are much higher than most people would predict. They are very encouraging.

Recently an informal group came together to focus on the issue of vocations at Catholic Central. The group consisted of Basilian and lay teachers and administrators.

One thought that emerged is to encourage the larger Catholic Central family to become engaged. To that end, at least once during every school year there will be a vocations presentation to the faculty, the Dads’ Club and the Mothers’ Club. A morning prayer is said every day at Catholic Central. Every day an effort will be made to make a meaningful, engaging creative reference to vocations – something beyond the obligatory exhortation to pray for vocations. Yet to be fully developed is some kind of student group which would afford those having an interest in vocations to share thoughts, concerns and aspirations. The group will also pursue efforts to engage the Alumni in the vocation mission. We obviously have priests and other religious who are Alumni. There are undoubtedly ways in which they and lay Alumni can support and encourage vocations. Not to be overlooked is that fact that some Alumni, of all ages, might be hearing God’s call.

The efforts of this informal group dovetail nicely with the renewed Basilian emphasis on vocations, as described elsewhere in these pages by Fr. Jefferson Thompson. If you have any ideas, can offer any support, or would like to join our group, don’t hesitate to contact me.

For the 20th consecutive year, the kick-off event of the School year will be presented by the Mothers’ Club, Dads’ Club and Alumni Association on Sunday, September 25, 2011. Keeping with tradition, we will begin with Mass at Noon in the Chapel, with food tasting at 1:00 pm in the cafeteria.

In the main gym, entertainment will be provided by the Catholic Central Jazz Band.

Over 25 quality restaurants will serve their specialties ranging from appetizers to desserts. Many restaurants will offer a sampling of their main menu items.

Class of 2011 Scholarships It was announced at commencement that members of the Class of 2011 were awarded approximately $9 million in academic scholarship money.

This included 135 of 238 graduates.

Also 38 graduates were awarded athletic scholarships to their respective colleges and universities.

CC Students March for Life Over 30 Catholic Central students traveled to Washington, D.C., for the annual March for Life on January 21-24, 2011, with the Students for Life of Michigan. They attended a conference put on by the Students for Life of America.

CC Teachers Dominic Michalik and Robert Klesko moderated what has become an annual trip for CC students who remain committed to the Right for Life. They concluded their trip by attending a Mass for Life at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Commencement for the Catholic Central Graduating Class of 2011 Catholic Central’s 2011 Commencement Ceremony was held on Sunday, May 22, at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor. Senior Class President and Master of Ceremonies was Eric Rettig ’11, who also gave the Salutatory Address. Mr. Neal Alpiner, who is retiring after 38 years of teaching at CC, gave the address to the graduates. Dillon Award Winner Timothy Hoffman ’11 gave the Valedictory Address and Matthew Messana ’11 gave the Dedicatory Address. Our best wishes and congratulations to our newest members of the Alumni Association.

Retiring Faculty As each school year comes to an end, so do the careers of certain faculty members who have dedicated their professional lives to the education of our students. This past year was no exception. Catholic Central said goodbye to three long-time faculty members who will not be forgotten because of their lasting impact on CC students.

The entire Catholic Central community thanks these individuals for their dedication and professionalism over the years.

They made CC better with their presence, and they will be missed. Congratulations on retirement!

Neal Alpiner retired from Catholic Central after 38 years of teaching mathematics, physics and computer science.

One of only a few who taught at the Outer Drive, the Breakfast Drive and the Wixom Road campuses, Neal served as the Mathematics Department Chair for the last 25 years. He was the keynote speaker at commencement in May. Gene Grewe retired from the classroom after 19 years at Catholic Central. Gene came to CC after spending many years as a teacher and administrator at Bishop Borgess High School. During his tenure at CC, he became known as “The Voice

of Catholic Central” because of his announcing at football games, commencement and other honored gatherings. Gene is also a member of the Catholic League Hall of Fame for his many years as a Track & Field coach. He has decided to continue coaching next year.

Joyce MacLennan retired from the CC Media Center after spending 25 years as Reference Librarian and Cataloger.

Joyce was always waiting to greet the students with a warm smile and helping hand.

Department Updates ECONOMICS On January 24, students from CC’s macroeconomics class visited the Detroit Economic Club to hear presentations by both Dow Chemical and the Nature Conservancy. At the event, Dow Chemical announced it will be investing $10 million over the next five years into collaboration with The Nature Conservancy that will provide the Midland-based chemical company with strategic, science-based environmental consulting. Andrew Liveris, chief executive officer of Dow Chemical, and Mark Tercek, chief executive officer of the Nature Conservancy, made the announcement together. CC students got the opportunity to have an exclusive meet-and-greet with both executives prior to the announcement, as well as attend the announcement, made at a DEC luncheon. Students were afforded the opportunity to submit questions, a few of which were read to the audience during the announcement.

THEOLOGY From the moment you walk in through the main entrance at Catholic Central High School, the mission of this institution becomes clear. Over the archway, one reads: “Jesus Christ: The Reason for Catholic Central.”

And, as one looks forward, the stained glass and tabernacle of the chapel are in plain sight. Both are outward signs of our School’s mission and what we hope is growing in the hearts, minds and souls of our student body.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (U.S.C.C.B) has determined that there should be a uniform curriculum for Catholic high schools throughout the country. The U.S.C.C.B. Curriculum Framework is meant to provide a developmentally appropriate, comprehensive, and systematic presentation of Catholic beliefs so that students will grow in their personal relationship with God, be knowledgeable about their Catholic faith and integrate these beliefs and traditions into their lives. This new curriculum is designed to help young people develop the necessary attitudes, values and skills to answer or address real questions they face in life or questions that are posed to them by others.

These systematic theology courses, which are Christological and apologetical in nature, will begin to be phased into our theology curriculum in the fall of 2011, and full implementation of the new curriculum should be in place by the 2013-14 academic year. In addition to the curriculum framework recommended by the U.S. Bishops, Catholic Central will also include units of study on Pope John Paul II’s “Theology of the Body” and another unit that will provide information about and foster vocations to the ordained and vowed ministries.

CC placed eighth in the state in this year’s Michigan Math League.

Josh Bindon ’11 was the cumulative high scorer for CC this year.

We had 51 students taking AP Calculus this year between the two versions of AB and BC, and the numbers are projected to rise for next year.

Robert Cernak ’11 finished in the Top 200 in the State of Michigan in this year’s Michigan Math Prize Competition. Logan Whitehead ’13 was one of the top finishers of the year nationally in the Catholic Math Facts Contest. His four test scores were the highest ever amassed in geometry by a CC student.

ENGLISH The English Department has continued to build on its success in many statewide and nationwide contests. Congratulations to Nick Sturla ’11 and Colin Cubr ’12, who were second and third place winners in the 2010 Richard Benvenuto Prize for Poetry offered by the Mid-Michigan Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters through the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities’ Center for Poetry at Michigan State University.

Congratulations to Mitchell Vitez ’13 and Nick McNallen ’12, who were winners of the Fr. Enright Essay Writing Contest for the 2010-2011 school year. These four writers were featured in the inaugural edition of Trinity, the Literary Journal of Detroit Catholic Central. Other featured Trinity poets and writers were Scott Czinski ’11, Chas Schneider ’11, Nate Wilkins ’11, Ryan Shinkel ’12, Nick Hines ’11, and Tyler Brown ’11. Poems and writings were judged by Trinity editor Mr. Kevin Griffin ’96, Mr. Chris Gismondi ’00, and Mr. Jason Jones.

Poems and writings were selected because of literary excellence, spiritual tenor, and human authenticity. Any alumnus interested in receiving a copy of Trinity may email Kevin Griffin at kgriffin@catholiccentral.net.

Congratulations to Connor Gibney ’12, who was the second school wide winner of the 2010-2011 Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest.

Following in the steps of previous champion, Tim Hoffman ’11, Connor went on to compete at the Michigan State Championship at Michigan State University on March 12, 2011.

With the help of Senior Tim Hoffman, Mr. James Walrad resurrected the Shamrock Forensic Team this past year. Forensic Team members participate in and become proficient in the forensic arts of debate, public speaking, and interpretation. In only its first year, the Forensic Team saw Shamrocks Scott Czinski ’11 and Joe Billotto ’11 qualify for the National Catholic Forensic League’s 60th Grand National Tournament in Washington, D.C. on May 27-29, 2011. Congratulations to these Shamrocks who competed in the Duo Interpretation event.

Keeping Up with Catholic Central Athletes

Baseball

Lacrosse

The Varsity Baseball Team finished the regular season with a 21-9 overall record, including a 16-6 league record, and a second place finish in the Central Division.

They advanced to the Catholic League Championship game at Above: Mitch Gatt ‘11 Comerica Park for the first time since 2001 by defeating Divine Child for the fifth time in the season. A tough 6-4 loss at Comerica Park only propelled the team into the playoffs. The Shamrocks went on to win the District and Regional Championships.

They finished with an overall record of 27-10. The team is led by first-year head coach, Bill Lis. The JV and Freshmen Teams also had phenomenal seasons, winning their respective division titles. The JV finished with a 20-3-1 record.

The Freshmen finished with a 16-2-2 record.

The Varsity Lacrosse Team finished the season with a 13-6 record after losing to Novi in overtime in the Regional Championship game. Coach Dave Wilson ’88, in his sixth season as head coach, also led the team to a runner-up finish in the Catholic League.

Track & Field The Track & Field Team finished the season with an undefeated record in the Central Division. They also went on to win their fourth straight Catholic League Championship and third straight Regional Championship before finishing in 6th Place at the State Final Meet. Longtime coach, Tony Magni, had his team well prepared all season long. Their success is a testament to the hard work that the athletes and coaches put in to the season.

Golf The Varsity Golf Team finished the season by placing in 6th Place at the State Final Tournament which was held at Oakland University’s Katke-Cousins Golf Course. The season saw the team compete somewhat inconsistently. They finished 3rd in the Oakland County Tournament, 5th in the District, and 2nd in the Regional Tournament. One thing remains true; Catholic Central consistently has a very good golf program and will continue to have such for a long time to come. The team was led by captains Nico Colucci ’11, Connor Sexton ’11, and Owen Franks ’12.
