A Message from the

President

Dear CC Alumni, Families, and Friends near and far, How many times have you participated in the singing of our Alma Mater? You will hear our Men of CC piously sing this hymn to Our Lady at every assembly and mass we have in the gymnasium. You may have witnessed how students turn and face our tile mosaic of Mary Alma Mater as they sing, or perhaps have heard our CC Alumni Glee Club sing a beautiful version in 3-part harmony. Let’s focus on the words, “Teach Us to Be Men,” since this is what we have named our current Capital Campaign for CC Students. The words of our Alma Mater song are directed towards our patroness, “Mary, Alma Mater,” or, “Mary, Nurturing Mother.” She is the patron saint of our school and thus all of our Men of CC. This is why our school color is blue. Of all of the saints, our Blessed Mother is the wisest and holiest, for she brings us closer to her Son, our Lord Jesus. There is no greater gift than the salvation offered by Christ. Our alumni can ponder the ways in which Catholic Central taught you “to be men.” Every year about 300 excited freshmen come through our doors as boys. It is our goal that they become men while they are here. Our current capital campaign is focused on them. For ten years we have enjoyed this beautiful 100+ acre campus and its facilities. Without our generous alumni it would have never been possible. What are our current needs in order to focus on what is best for our 1,070 current Men of CC and those who will follow in the next few years? Our “Teach Us to Be Men Campaign for CC Students” identifies three specific needs: 1) Student safety, 2) an endowment for quality faculty attraction and retention, and 3) an endowment for financial assistance. Please visit our campaign website, “TeachUsToBeMen.com” for further elaboration. In order to ensure a bright future for upcoming generations of Shamrocks, we need your help. As you know, CC relies on financial gifts to make our school as accessible as possible to as many families as possible. Many of you make a yearly gift which helps to fund our annual operating budget through the “Spirit of CC Annual Fund.” Many have also remembered CC in their wills through legacy giving. We are so incredibly grateful for all of that assistance! It is quite humbling, and you will never fully realize the good that your generosity brings about. I humbly ask you to prayerfully consider making a pledge to our “Teach Us to Be Men” campaign as well. Unlike a donation to the Annual Fund, a pledge can be paid out over three or five years. God has blessed our CC community with immeasurable gifts: faith, family, education, stability, integrity, and immeasurable love, the highest gift of all. During our pilgrimage here on earth, we all find ourselves in different financial situations with varied capacities of generosity. We are entering a time of year where the commercialism of holidays begs for our attention. Out of the powerful force of God’s love we are called to care for our sisters and brothers in need. Of course, we must focus on those who suffer the most. If you can, please also consider being a part of CC’s “Teach Us to Be Men” campaign. Our current and future generations of Shamrocks appreciate it more than you will know. During the Holy Season of Advent we prepare for Christ’s coming in our lives. Despite the ways in which our attention is diverted away from this sacred reality of God’s love for us, let us turn our focus towards Him during this season, especially through prayer, worship, and time spent with our families. May God continue to bless you and all those whom you love.

CHATTERBOX Staying Connected With Your Classmates THE FABULOUS ’40s 1945 – RICHARD MCASKIN was visited at his home in Plymouth, Mich., on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, by Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 and Dan Collins ’84. It was great to reunite the Class Presidents from 1945 and 1946, two of the rocks upon which our great tradition is built.

The Michigan Catholic in 1951 published Fr. Martin’s list of his All-Star Baseball team from the late 1930s and the 1940s. The CC Alumni office located this list in the archives and the 26 men on Fr. Martin’s list were inducted into CC’s Athletic Hall of Fame on September 27 as part of Boys’ Bowl Weekend. Their plaque hangs on the CC Athletic Hall of Fame Wall. Inductees attending the ceremonies at the Boys’

Bowl Mass and Football Game were Stan Wilkins ’42, Hon. Roland Olzark ’45, Don Herbert ’47, Art Ronan ’47, and Ray Herbert ’48. Family members representing Frank Ankenbrandt ’39, Norb Switalski ’42, and Ron Rozman ’50 were also in attendance. Certificates of Induction were delivered to Dick Yata ’43 and Jerry Schypinski ’50, who were unable to attend. These Fr. Martin teams won 15 consecutive Catholic League Championships and many City, Legion, and Federation titles. Over a dozen of these men signed major league contracts, and three of them played in the 1945 World Series (won by the Detroit Tigers over the Chicago Cubs). Many had their professional dreams cut short by World War II or the Korean War. We thank them for their service to our country.

THE NIFTY ’50s 1959 – BILL ALLGEYER was visited on October 12, 2015, by Fr. Ray Paramo, C.S.B. and Fr. John Wheeler, Bill Allgeyer ’59 C.S.B. ’57 to bring him the sacraments. Bill writes this for the Aluminator: In high school, I began working in politics to make life better for people. I did that until my health failed. I have been bedridden since 2013. I live in a group home with little hope of walking again. Please pray for me. 1959 – The Class of ’59 fall get-together luncheon was held at the Ginopolis Restaurant on October 2. There were 20 in attendance including Doug Dean, who delayed his return to Phoenix to be there. As in the past, other alumni and friends are always welcome to join us.

THE GROOVY ’70s 1979 – DENNIS BARNES was elected treasurer of the State Bar of Michigan in July. Denny also dedicates time to CC as a member of the Denny Barnes ’79 School Board of Directors and the secretary of the Alumni Association.

THE TECHNO ’80s 1981 – JIM COLLINS recently passed through Washington, D.C. for work and took time to reunite with a couple of other CC grads who live in the area, Doug ’80 and Bobby Larsen ’81. They look forward to the Class of ’81 reunion next year.

MILITARY Serving Our Country

1st Lt. Buck Neal ’09 Instructor Pilot U.S. Air Force

Reasons for Enlisting I got accepted into the United States Air Force Academy and left for Basic Cadet Training in June right after graduating from Catholic Central. In all honesty, I didn’t fully understand what I was signing up for. I simply thought that I would be going to school like at any normal university and I would have a guaranteed job in the Air Force afterwards. At the time I had very little knowledge of how the military really worked, how it was structured (i.e. Enlisted vs. Officer), or of the possible career options it offered. I thank my father for getting me started in this process and guiding me towards the Air Force. Strangely enough, it began one afternoon at a CC playoff baseball game after my junior year. I just remember walking through the parking lot to go to the stadium and there was a huge blue metal shipping container parked right in front as everyone walked by. It was a portable flight simulator sponsored by the Air Force Academy. I didn’t even get to fly it because the line was too long, and I didn’t want to miss any of the game. However, when I got home I told my dad about the simulator they had, and it was all easy from there. He did some research and found out that USAFA had a good engineering program and that I should consider applying. I went through the lengthy application process, barely meeting all of the deadlines since I started so late. In the end I was accepted, and the rest is history.

Lessons Learned I’ve learned the tough lesson that no matter how difficult the situation at hand, integrity and honor come before everything else. Without integrity nothing else matters. Trust cannot be maintained if there is any doubt of integrity between people. This is even more important for members in the profession of arms. When men and women trust you with their lives, you cannot effectively function as a team if there is no trust and faith in one another that they are going to do the right thing the first time when it counts.

1st Lt. Buck Neal ’09

Goals for the Future At this early stage in my service I believe that I would like to make a career out of it. After doing a tour as an instructor, I hope to be assigned to fly a fighter type aircraft, preferably the F-22 Raptor or the new F-35 Lightning. From there, I envision staying in to become a Commander of a flying squadron.

“Strangely enough, it began one afternoon at a CC playoff baseball game after my junior year.” CC Preparation Discipline and hard work are definitely characteristics that were instilled into me at CC that have helped me during my time. I was on the wrestling team during my time at CC, and every lesson learned was taught both on and off those mats. Coach Rod and Coach Hancock taught me a heck of a lot more than just the finer points of a mean double leg takedown. I truly believe if you can survive that room, there is not a single thing in life you cannot do if you set your mind to it. Advice for Current Shamrocks Get out of your comfort zone. Test your body and test your mind; you will never know how far you can go in life unless you push the limits. You are stronger than you know. And, as Father Ken McKernan, C.S.B. always asked, “Who is the man you seek to become?”

Roles and Responsibilities I’m currently an Instructor Pilot after having finished Undergraduate Pilot Training and follow-on training. I am responsible for the safety and instruction of my students during their training, which lasts about 14 months. Students will begin with basic aircraft control and progress through advanced formation flying with another aircraft flying only a few feet away.

1st Lt. Buck Neal ’09 with his squadron

Business Spotlight on PROVISION - Personal Insurance CC alumni Britton Steele ’05, Andy Hager ’05, and Bret Driscoll ’07 by Shaun Sova ’09, Associate Director of Advancement Founded in Southfield, Michigan, in early 2013, Provision was established by Britton Steele ’05 with the vision of becoming a leader in personal insurance. The firm has seen rapid growth and has become a top writer for some of the largest insurance companies in the country, including AAA, Liberty Mutual, Progressive, and Nationwide. The rapid growth allowed Provision to move its office to Bingham Farms in late 2014. Provision has over 20 appointments with different insurance companies, allowing its producers to find its clients the optimal policy for their personal insurance needs. Left to right: Andy Hager ’05, Britton Steele ’05, and Bret Driscoll ’07

Personal Auto, Home, Life, Rental Property, Motorcycle, RV, ATV, Snowmobile, and commercial insurance are all lines of business Provision currently writes. Britton and Provision currently hold licenses in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Georgia, Massachusetts, California, Rhode Island, and Texas. Following graduation from Catholic Central, Britton attended Michigan State, receiving a bachelors degree in Human Resources and went on to obtain his MBA from Wayne State. Britton started his insurance career with Liberty Mutual Insurance as a sales intern. He was promoted to sales representative in 2011, and was once again promoted to lead sales representative in 2012 after finishing as the #1 auto policy producer in the state of Michigan. There are currently two fellow Shamrock alumni that work in the sales department at Provision, Andy Hager ’05 and Bret Driscoll ’07. Andy joined the team after spending the last year at a local insurance agency. Bret joined the Provision team after a few years at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. Both Shamrocks brought a tremendous amount of knowledge of business and insurance, helping the firm grow to over 3,500 customers in under three years.

However, one of our editors recently noticed that no one had ever listed in one place all the accomplishments that the students achieve in a year. Grading Our Last Issue

VOL. 65, NO. 1

FALL 2015

by Fred Lauck ’61

Dear Father Paramo, The fall Aluminator (2015) has both a wonderfully polished look and an intriguing wealth of articles to match. I’ve presumed to grade them this way:

Third place winner: The Mad Bowler Unmasked

T EACH US TO BE ME N - THE C AMPAIGN FOR CC S TUDENTS S H I N I N G E X A M P L E S O F A T H E C L A C T I V E A S S O F 1 L U M N I 9 6 5 C E L E B R A T E S T H E I R 5 TH 0

Fall 2015 issue of the Aluminator

Paul Majewski ’78 is as funny as he is daring as he recounts his age-old escapade of surreptitiously rolling a thundering bowling ball down the halls of 6565 West Outer Drive. And, he got away with it (almost) for four decades until he finally came forward and blew the whistle on himself in the fall Aluminator. As a trial lawyer, I know that, although confession is good for the soul, it is not good for the case. But Paul waited for the statute of limitations to run out, so he is home free -- no jugs for him. The only thing the Basilians can do now is retroactively revoke his graduation diploma and give him a “letter’’ for the sport of “Bowling Without Pins.’’

Second place winner: The Class of 1965 Brings Us Up To Date The “profile’’ of thirteen members of the stalwart class of 1965 from 6565 West Outer Drive. Great stories of very good men, all filled with Basilian “forged-in-steel’’ strength and humanity. The Class of 1965 is a great class.

First place winner: Catholic Central A Welcoming Place For All Faiths by Fr. Bill Riegel, C.S.B. It is a missive of “acceptance’’ and “inclusion,’’ a sentiment that mirrors what I understand to be the directive of Jesus to his followers to embrace all men and women of good faith, that is, those who commit and struggle to do the right thing and to love God and one another. Thank you Father Riegel for redoubling the message of Jesus and bringing it home to the Catholic Central family as we are now influenced by your (oh so well written) encouragement to be at “non-judgmental’’ peace with all religions, all faiths, and all of God’s children across the globe. Father, I hope to meet you soon. Congratulations to you, Father Paramo, and your Aluminator staff. All of you earned an A+++. - Fred Lauck ’61

Catholic Central Articles of Interest

CC Students Learn at Farmington Council Meeting by Joni Hubred-Golden [originally published December 1, 2015 by The Farmington Voice] Eleven Detroit Catholic Central students got a lesson in local government Monday, by attending a Farmington city council meeting. Mayor Bill Galvin ’85, whose son, Brian, is a Catholic Central senior, said two students attended a meeting last year – and he’s hoping for 20 next year. The visit was connected to a Government class assignment. Galvin explained that city council members all have “day jobs,” but there are many opportunities to get involved as a local government professional. “Public administration is a future you guys could all consider,” he said. Officials held a special meeting in the City Hall conference room to interview and appoint members to the Historical Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals. Candidates fielded a range of questions, from how they would handle conflicts with neighbors to opinions about development of the Maxfield Training Center site and potential loss of four houses on Grand River. Brendan McCarthy, 17, a Catholic Central senior from Farmington Hills, said he found the entire meeting interesting. “I enjoyed hearing a lot of different points of view as to different issues in the community,” he said. “This was a really good experience for me.” Council members appointed Todd Craft to the Zoning Board of Appeals, and Todd Huffman, Christopher Schroer, and Daniel Westendorf to the Historical Commission. Westendorf’s appointment is pending an opinion from the city attorney regarding conflict of interest, as he is employed by council member Jeff Scott’s architectural firm. Farmington Mayor Bill Galvin ’85, center, welcomed 11 Detroit Catholic Central students to Monday’s special city council meeting.

Gentlemen,

It’s hard to believe that Christmas is upon us. Didn’t school just come into session a few weeks ago? My mother always told us that as you grow older, years go like months, months like weeks, and weeks like days. I guess she was right.

Please Pray With Us!

For those of you alumni fortunate enough to have a young man currently attending Catholic Central, I hope their experience is everything and more than yours was when you attended Catholic Central. All three of my sons are long graduated (’02, ’03 and ’10); however, I continue to draw immense enjoyment from chatting with several young men who live in my subdivision who currently attend Catholic Central, as well as several of my very good friends whose sons are still at Catholic Central.

…in the Catholic Central Chapel

Several days ago, I encountered a young mother at the Wayne County Friend of the Court. Her son currently attends Lincoln Park High School. She inquired where my children went to high school. When I mentioned that they graduated from Catholic Central she immediately burst into an excited story about how one of our alumni, Mr. Justin Cessante ’99, was her son’s strength and agility coach. She simply could not say enough about what a gentleman and what a committed and caring individual Justin had been to her son. She made it clear that she hopes that her son will continue to grow and advance and become just like Justin. All of us CC Brothers should and can take great pride in our sons and all the young men, including us older alumni that Catholic Central has helped shape and develop over the years. Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. It never goes out of style. The world could use more of it.

Alumni Association Memorial Mass & Breakfast

As usual it has been exciting time around the CC campus, including events from this past semester: Boys’ Bowl reunions, the Boys’ Bowl Alumni Mass & Breakfast, the Memorial Mass and Breakfast, and the recent Open House for prospective incoming Freshmen. Over 1,000 families and individuals toured Catholic Central during the Open House. John Sprys ’60 and several other of the Alumni Board CC Ambassadors, as well as current students, were there to assist and socialize with our visitors. They were all favorably impressed. In addition, our stadium is now known as The Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 Stadium in deference to Father Elmer. Upcoming events include: Alumni Basketball League (Starting January 10), Alumni Mass and Lenten Meal on Ash Wednesday (February 10), Florida Reunion (March 19), and our signature event, the Catholic Central Alumni Dinner (April 28). I would like to close by asking each of you to commit to attend the CC Alumni Dinner on April 28, 2016. We can all play a major role in the lives of other deserving young men who either are currently attending or would like to attend Catholic Central. The Alumni Dinner is a fine evening of collegiality, bringing together a broad spectrum of alumni, young and old, with a fabulous meal and a brief but poignant presentation of the Father Canning Harrison Award to one or two of our esteemed Alumni. It is an evening worth marking on your calendar and attending. If you have never attended before, I ask that you give it at least one opportunity. I believe that if you do you will be sure to return every year! Please know that the proceeds from the Alumni Dinner are used to directly support our CC Alumni Association activities and, indirectly, assist in tuition scholarships for young men who are financially in need and would like to attend Catholic Central. My personal experience as an attorney exposes me on a daily basis to countless mothers, fathers, and grandparents who are struggling financially, but would like to see their sons or grandsons attend Catholic Central. Please be generous in your consideration of either attending the Alumni Dinner or making a contribution directly to the school earmarked for tuition assistance. I wish each of you a blessed Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year.

Mass – 7:20 am Every School-Day Morning

Each fall, the Alumni Association sponsors a Memorial Mass & Breakfast in honor of those members of the CC Family who have died. Specifically, we remember those alumni who have died within the last calendar year, as well as those deceased members of the CC Family whose family is in attendance at the Mass. Fr. John Huber, C.S.B. Ed.D., President of Catholic Central, celebrated the Mass, and Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46, President Emeritus, concelebrated.

Plan to Attend the Upcoming Alumni Association Retreat The 8th Annual Alumni Association Retreat will be held at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center in Detroit, on the weekend of January 8-10, 2016. Please join us as we explore our own faith and the theme for the weekend. This is a wonderful opportunity to: • Renew and refresh, physically and spiritually • Gain peace and reconciliation • Ask God’s help in important decisions

and pressing problems • Enjoy a weekend away in good company

9th Annual

Athletic Hall of Fame The Athletic Hall of Fame is an annual affair at which we honor our former athletes and coaches for the profound contributions they have made to the tradition of Catholic Central athletics. Inductees are recognized through a special ceremony during the annual Gerry Di Ponio ’65 Memorial Boys’ Bowl Mass and Breakfast, which took place this year on Sunday, September 27, 2015. Afterward, the inductees were also introduced at halftime of the 71st Boys’ Bowl Game against Brother Rice.

The Rodriguez Brothers (Steve ’72, Dave ’75, and Chris ’89), sons of Hall of Fame coach Mike Rodriguez, established themselves as some of the best wrestlers in program history. Steve was a four-year member of the varsity team, helping lead the team to three state championships in 1969, 1970, and 1971. In 1972, Steve won an individual state championship as a senior. Dave was also a four-year varsity member. He helped lead the team to the 1974 state championship, and Dave won an individual state championship in 1975. Chris competed on the varsity for four years earning All-State honors and helping lead the team to the 1988 state championship and a #4 final ranking in the country. Walt Bartels ’86 was a varsity athlete on both the tennis and hockey teams. As a member of the tennis team under coach Frank Garlicki, Walt helped lead the Shamrocks to back-to-back state championships in 1985 and 1986. The team finished second in 1984. Walt won the Fr. James Whelan Award as a senior and earned a hockey scholarship to Michigan State University. Toby Heaton ’88 played football and wrestled at Catholic Central. As an All-State football player, Toby helped lead the Shamrocks to the state finals in 1987. As an All-American wrestler, Toby won back-to-back individual state championships in 1987 and 1988 and helped lead the team to the 1988 team state championship and a #4 final ranking in the country.

Derek led the team in rushing all three seasons and earned All-State honors. John Salter was head coach of the baseball program at Catholic Central for 25 years from 1980-2005. During that time he amassed 615 victories. The Shamrocks won 16 District Titles, eight Regional Titles, and six Catholic League Championships. Moreover, Coach Salter’s teams won State Championships in 1987 and 1999. The 1999 team, which finished with a #12 final ranking by USA Today, entered the CC Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. Coach Salter was also an assistant coach on the 1979 state championship team led by Frank Corej. Fr. Martin’s All-Star Baseball Team is made up of former CC baseball players who excelled under the direction of Fr. Martin on CC’s legendary baseball teams of the 1930s and 1940s. These teams won 15 consecutive Catholic League Championships and numerous city titles. Furthermore, many players went on to play college ball while over a dozen went on to sign professional contracts with Major League Baseball. The 1983 & 1984 Cross Country Teams, led by legendary coach Tony Magni, won the school’s first and second cross country State Titles. Both teams won the Catholic League and Regional championships. The teams were led by all-staters Marty Hegarty ’85 and Steve Shaver ’85.

Derek Brooks ’04 played football, basketball, and baseball at Catholic Central. One of the finest running backs in CC history, Derek started at

Teach Us To Be Men: The Campaign for CC Students Frank Garlicki Faculty Endowment Fund Detailed in the Funding Priorities of the Teach Us To Be Men campaign is the response from the CC Family to the need to continue to provide an outstanding education made possible only through the attraction, retention, and development of the very best teaching talent. With that goal in mind, we made it a priority to establish an Endowed Fund to do just that. Thanks to the dedication and devotion of Kevin O’Connor ’79, we are pleased to introduce the Frank Garlicki Faculty Fund in honor of the late, great Frank Garlicki. Mr. Garlicki, affectionately known throughout the CC community as “The Gar,” was a legendary teacher, moderator, and coach who was a member of the CC faculty for 23 years (1968 – 1991). Frank Garlicki is remembered for the way he constantly challenged his students to formulate and articulate their opinions. His classroom was an arena for honest debate and reasoned argument, honing the critical skills of all who studied under him. Mr. Garlicki was an incredible Debate Coach, and his CC Debate Teams were winners of numerous national and state championships. In addition to these achievements, Mr. Garlicki also coached the CC Tennis Team from 1976 – 1991, winning State Championships in 1985 and 1986. Kevin has helped us establish this Fund with a generous lead gift, but his gift came with a challenge to all members of the CC community, especially those with the same dedication to CC, devotion to Frank Garlicki, and commitment to quality education, to consider making an investment themselves to ensure the fulfillment of our mission and the teaching of goodness, discipline, and knowledge by only the best of the best.

The Catholic Central Endowment

DETROIT CATHOLIC CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

- Funding CC Scholarships Dear Alumni,

The Endowment is one of the major sources of CC scholarship funding. These scholarships are presented to students in three categories: individual academic achievement, financial need, or as specified by the donor. Within the Endowment, there are a number of fully funded perpetual scholarships (minimum $25,000), which have been established by the Basilian Fathers, by CC graduating classes, in individual or family names, and anonymously. In addition, a number of alumni families have contributed to the Endowment by making Catholic Central a beneficiary within their estate plans. With the ever-increasing cost of offering the finest education and moral leadership to the young men of Catholic Central, we must

STADIUM

On Friday, August 28, 2015, in a pre-game ceremony prior to kick-off the 2015 Varsity Football season opening game vs. Muskegon High School, the CC community recognized our beloved President Emeritus – Fr. Richard Elmer, CSB ’46 as we named our Stadium in his honor.

FR. RICHARD ELMER, C.S.B. ‘46 In 1990, the Mission of CC found a face and a voice like never before when Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ‘46 returned to his Alma Mater to become Director of Alumni Relations & Development. Prior to his return, Fr. Elmer served CC as Student Council President (1945-1946), Teacher and Counselor (1953-1954, 1960-1967), Vice Principal and Principal (1967-1973), and Athletic Director (1973-1975). In 2000, Fr. Elmer became CC’s first President, and his vision for the future of CC changed the course of our history forever as Fr. Elmer led the Live & Die for CC High campaign, acquired the land, solicited the funding, and willed the magnificent new Detroit Catholic Central High School in Novi to become a reality.

Fr. Elmer, now 88 years young, continues to amaze us with his dedication and hard work. He still comes to work every day! No other Basilian has served more roles at CC than he, and he is truly the visionary and the motivator that has made CC what it is today. Thanks to the devotion of a select group of alumni, led by the great Class of 1955 and class leaders: Bill Barr, Ray Billinghurst, Terry Brady, and John Ivers, new signage was installed on our Stadium Press box and a Dedication Plaque was installed adjacent to the main Stadium entrance.

Teach Us To Be Men: The Campaign for CC Students CC HONORS TOM MACH & TONY MAGNI

TOM

MA C H

FIELD

On Boys’ Bowl Sunday, September 27th, the CC community recognized Tom Mach’s impact and his lifetime of commitment and achievements of our legendary football coach as we dedicated Tom Mach Field. In May 2015 the decision was made by school administration to replace the 10 year-old turf in our Stadium. In 10 years, our original turf had served us well, but needed to be replaced. A new state-of-the-art turf was installed. Our new field, made with Cross-Flex Technology, is the finest playing surface available, maximizing player performance and delivering increased player safety. We are the only stadium in the state of Michigan (high school, collegiate, or professional) with such a surface.

COACH TOM MACH In 1976, a young enthusiastic coach by the name of Tom Mach was given the opportunity to take charge of the storied Detroit Catholic Central High School football program. With a youthful energy and passion, this young coach was determined to create the finest high school football program in the State of Michigan. Forty years later, Tom Mach has built that program. He has built a program that is the envy of all other schools. His teams have been to the State Championship 16 times, and won the State Championship 10 times. His teams have won the Detroit Catholic League Championship 16 times and he has coached more than 72 All-State players, over 124 All-Catholic Players, and 4 All-Americans. His teams were the first in the State to win back-to-back Class A / Division 1 Championships, a feat he has accomplished twice, and the first and only team to win 3 consecutive Division 1 State Champions. He is the coach who won 200 games faster than any coach in State history, and his varsity teams have won a total of 361 games. In the Tom Mach era, CC Football, at all levels, has won 871 games. The true measure of the man, and the impact of his program, is measured by the loyalty and devotion of his former players to him and to their school. Tom Mach has built men of character and of class. His impact is measured by the men his players have become…husbands, fathers, coaches, teachers, lawyers, doctors, and business men.

COACH TONY MAGNI Tony Magni has been a social studies, health, and physical education teacher at CC since the 1973-1974 school year. Mr. Magni has also served Catholic Central as head coach of both the Cross Country and Track & Field teams for most of the past 43 years. He has taught and coached at CC’s campuses on Outer Dive, Breakfast Drive, and Wixom Road. Coach Magni has led the Shamrocks to 25 Catholic League titles, 17 Regional titles, and 6 State Championships in cross country. Additionally, he has won 12 Catholic League track titles and four Regional track championships. His athletes have earned multiple all-state finishes and won two individual cross country state titles and six track & field state titles. Tony has been honored for his steadfast dedication to educational athletics as a member of the Detroit Catholic League Hall of Fame and the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Hall of Fame. His 1983 and 1984 state champion Cross Country Teams were inducted into the CC Athletic Hall of Fame this past fall. Furthermore, Coach Magni has received numerous “Coach of the Year” awards, including National Coach of the Year. In 2005, when Catholic Central moved to Novi, the brand new track was named the Tony Magni Track thanks in part to the generosity of the Tom Reid Family. However, this honor never received proper acknowledgement and dedication. This spring, Catholic Central plans officially to recognize Coach Magni and properly dedicate the track in his honor. We have communicated the fact that one of the primary Funding Priorities of the Teach Us To Be Men campaign is Endowment for student financial aid. The issue of accessibility and affordability of a CC education is paramount to our future. There is no greater champion for this cause than Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46, so in communion with the stadium dedication and “Teach Us To Be Men,” Catholic Central High School is pleased to announce the creation of the Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 Scholarship Fund. The goal of this Fund is to increase the Catholic Central Endowment Trust by at least $2 million in honor of Fr. Elmer. The entire CC community is invited to consider an investment in this very special Scholarship Fund. Fr. Elmer was humbled to have his name on our Stadium, but it is the school’s Endowment Trust and this Scholarship Fund that means the most to him. It is this Fund that will assure that he will continue to impact the lives of young men, future Shamrocks, for generations to come.

From the Fr. Richard Elmer Plaque: Detroit Catholic Central High School was founded in 1928 when 260 young men attended the first day of classes at a humble all-boys Catholic high school led by the Fathers of Congregation of St. Basil. The Mission of CC and the Basilan Fathers was simple - to teach young men the virtues of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. Little did those priests and students know of the unparalleled educational tradition that was about to begin…

National Merit Semifinalists Four Detroit Catholic Central High School students were named Semifinalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Competition. About 1.5 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest scoring entrants in each state. The Semifinalists will have the chance to compete for 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth about $32 million.

About 90% of the Semifinalists will earn Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar® title. Including the four Semifinalists this year, 58 CC students have been named National Merit Semifinalists since 2010. Deacon Tom Leonard CC Theology Teacher to Serve in Dearborn Deacon Tom Leonard, 64, a theology teacher at Catholic Central, has always admired the ministry of permanent deacons. He was ordained October 3 by Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament. The Detroit native and parishioner of Divine Child in Dearborn has served in prisons, hospitals and ministered to the poor and inner-city homeless. He said he sees his new ministry as a way to focus on the New Evangelization through service to the parish and its faithful. A deacon, he said, is trained to “minister at the altar, proclaim God’s word in various settings, doing works of charity and acting as the ordinary minister of the Eucharist, baptism and funeral services.” Deacon Leonard, who enjoys studying and teaching Scripture, hunting and exercising, is married to Christine and has five adult children ages 28-39, including Andrew ’07. He completed his internship at St. Anthony Parish in Belleville and is a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Deacon Leonard will serve at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish in Dearborn.
