A Message from the

President

Dear Alumni of Detroit Catholic Central and CC friends, God has blessed Catholic Central with a unique culture of brotherhood based on the Catholic philosophy of education, inspired by the legacy of the Basilian Fathers, lay faculty and staff. It is truly a joy to hear the hundreds of stories that our alumni enjoy sharing of their years at CC. What a privilege it is to have so many alumni, who have achieved their degrees, gone out into the work world and established families who are not only curious about the activities and current situation of their alma mater, but are consistently dedicated to the continuation of the sacred Basilian and Catholic mission of our school. One important part of CC culture is the annual DRIVE. The stories of past assemblies, live skits, Father Donoher’s adventures into the wealthier parts of town so that freshmen could sell their tickets, inspire the CC of 2015 more than you probably know. This year’s DRIVE was once again very successful, in large part due to our alumni who purchase tickets, either through the mail or through direct purchase from one of our Men of CC. Thank you for your fidelity! Shamrocks brought in an amazing $445,293.13. Proceeds from the DRIVE help us fund our Financial Assistance Program in order to make CC as accessible as possible to families of modest incomes. Another important part of CC culture across the decades has been our Mission Collections in homerooms. Uniquely through student generosity, thousands of dollars each year help fund the Basilian Fathers Missions in Mexico and Colombia. Two Basilians who are CC alumni currently dedicate their lives full-time to the missions: Father John Boscoe, C.S.B. ’61 serves as our Mission Procurator in Sugar Land, TX and Father Bob Seguin, C.S.B. ’58 is novice master of six Basilian novices in our Colombian Novitiate in Santa Marta, Colombia. Our students’ dedication to the mission of the DRIVE and to the Basilian Missions is one way of assuring that Men of Catholic Central follow Christ’s message to care about all of God’s children, especially those who are suffering or in difficult situations. I would like to offer anyone who would like to donate to the Basilian Fathers Missions (http://basilianfathersmissions.org/) a CC keychain that was made by at-risk youth served in our mission in Medellín, Colombia. If you send your donation directly to me (Fr. John Huber, C.S.B., Catholic Central High School, 27225 Wixom Rd. Novi MI 48374), I will send you the keychain myself. Checks can be made out to “Basilian Fathers Missions”. I am grateful to all of those who have been following my Presidential Blog since I began in the fall. I encourage you to take a look when you can, at https://www.catholiccentral.net/PresidentBlog. You can also follow me on Twitter at https://twitter.com/HuberJB. Through these two technological methods you can follow recent CC activity without having to wait for the next edition of the Aluminator. I ask you to keep CC in your prayers as we continue the sacred apostolate of ministering to the young men God sends to us. Please also pray for the continued success of our Capital Campaign: Teach us To Be Men, and our Annual Fund. While none of us likes to dwell too much on finances and numbers, it’s what keeps us going and focused on what God is asking us to do. May God continue to bless you and your families abundantly!

Fr. John B. Huber, C.S.B., Ed.D. President

Fall 2014 Mystery Photo Identified TheVocation of Teaching, Page 22 From Larry Maguire ’65: The picture of Mr. Robert Scheuermann and six students appeared on page 101 of the “The Shamrock” yearbook of 1963. It was taken in the main office of the school at 6565 West Outer Drive in Detroit, MI. The six students in clockwise order starting to the left of Mr. Scheuermann are: Bruce Adams ’65, Roger Neff ’65, Mike Brady ’65, Larry Maguire ’65, Tom Baldwin ’65, and Ken McDaniel ’65. The occasion was a Saturday multi-school student debate contest hosted by Mr. Scheuermann and CC. I believe the event occurred in the Fall of 1.962. The six of us were sophomores in Mr. Scheuermann’s history class at the time. We either volunteered, or were strongly persuaded, to help out with the grunt work for the event. I’m sure we didn’t wear jackets and ties of our own volition. The real irony is that two students are actually sitting at the desk that belonged to Mrs. Bales, the longtime school secretary at CC. It was a solemn rule that a student never went past the front counter of the desk until Mrs. Bales gave her approval. If she knew we were “lounging” around her desk, I’m not sure we would ever have been able to live it down. Many thanks for producing the Aluminator. It is always a treat to hear what is going on at CC and news of what is happening with the alumni who gained so much from attending CC.

Alumni Reminisce on School Days Gone By

CC LIFE REMEMBERED Here we feature stories of CC life from the past. Our Chatterbox section covers the recent activities of alumni, but we thought reminiscences of the past would be of interest to alumni who shared the experiences. – Ed.

Submitted by Joe Cheff ’74 Dear Aluminator, The last issue of the Aluminator featured an article about Fr. Bob Duggan, C.S.B. ’53 which sparked several latent neuronal circuits.

It should be noted for the record that the Mad Bowler’s escapades continued beyond the 6565 West Outer Drive location to 14200 Breakfast Drive. There were many instances of the bowling ball’s repeat performance down long halls on the second floor down to the first floor. Still, the Mad Bowler was not identified. The occurrences did come to a halt at our current location. Some believe it had something to do with the fine nap carpeting that eliminated the gratifying “whoosh.” – Ed.

THE MAD BOWLER At 6565 W. Outer Drive, Fr. Duggan had a classroom at the end of the second floor, on the other side of the doors leading to the stairs. He had a showcase outside his classroom, on which, in 1974, he posted “Wanted” posters with pictures of Bela Lugosi for anyone having information about the “Mad Bowler.” You see, at random times this “Mad Bowler” would emerge from the stairwell on the second floor just beyond the library of the old 6565 West Outer Drive building and, with a mighty pendulous swing of his arm, catapult the three holed orb down the hallway toward the doors outside Fr. Duggan’s classroom. Whoop, whoop, whoop… the ball would sound as it rolled down the tiled hallway. As it progressed down the hallway, you could hear cheers from the 1st and 2nd floor classrooms as the bowling ball sounded its way to its ultimate capture by Fr. Duggan. All the while, the Mad Bowler slipped away into infamy. Fr. Duggan was known to have confiscated at least two bowling balls. It is rumored that the Mad Bowler was never caught and that he was, in fact, not just one person. (He was spotted once at a pep rally performing a very difficult 7-10 split. This was, truly, a very inspiring moment for the student body of CC.) Maybe one day Fr. Duggan could critique a film about “The Mad Bowler of Catholic Central,” written anonymously, of course, by members of the Class of 1974. 6

REMEMBRANCE OF ROBERT SCHEUERMANN I was saddened to learn of the recent death of Robert Scheuermann. From kindergarten to the PhD, he was one of the four or five most influential teachers in my academic career. He inspired me with a love of learning and presented me with a model of hard work and tough love that I needed when I became a teacher myself. When I was a sophomore in his history class, he told me that I should read a certain book. It would not help me in his class or make any difference in my grade, but if I wanted to be educated (imagine telling that to a teenager!), I should get a copy of How to Read a Book, by the eminent educational philosopher Mortimer Adler, and read it carefully. I did. It was one of the most influential lessons in my life as a scholar and teacher. I particularly remember an awards ceremony when Mr. Scheuermann was presenting an award to the debate team. He said something I shall never forget: “The only true education is self-education.” That says it all. He wanted none of the credit. It was ours for doing the things that he pushed us to do. God bless Robert Scheuermann and God bless the Basilian Fathers for having the wisdom to welcome this layman into their educational mission and turn him loose. My life is better for having been one of his students. ROBERT H. SCHEUERMANN - October 23, 2014. Mr. Robert Scheuermann, longtime Catholic Central English teacher, passed away in his home on October 23, 2014. Father of Michael ’73 and David Scheuermann ’76.

HeritageFamilie s continued A Story of CC Loyalty by John Ronayne ’64

In the last Aluminator, which featured a number of Catholic Central’s Heritage Families, there was a piece about my family’s multi-generational commitment to Catholic Central. Sometime thereafter, Fr. Paramo gave me a call. It seems that Father and a few others were struck by the dimensions of that commitment (36 family members, 83 years, three generations). His question was simple: What do you think accounts for it? And he followed with: Do you think you could put something together for the next Aluminator? At the risk of over-staying my family’s welcome on the pages of the Aluminator, here are my thoughts and those of my siblings. The stage was set with both my maternal and paternal grandparents, all of whom placed a high value on education. So much so, that all of their male offspring attended Catholic Central. My mother and her sister-in-law (and my Aunt) Estelle were thus immersed in Catholic Central as CC Sisters years before they were CC Moms. There are also what might be called the “statistics” of it. First and foremost, there have been a lot of us. The effect is amplified by the fact that the family has largely remained in the Detroit area. For example, nine of my ten siblings are Detroiters. Finally, among our blessings we have largely been able to afford, in some instances only with considerable sacrifice, a Catholic Central education. At least for my brothers, sisters, and me, the animating influence was our father, Jack Ronayne ’37. He was a true product of a Basilian education. After Catholic Central, he went north and spent four more years with the Basilians at St. Michael’s College in Toronto. He returned home after World War II, and part way through medical school he began a decades-long involvement with Catholic Central. As the time arrived to enter Catholic Central, each of my father’s seven sons had already attended a lifetime’s worth of Catholic Central events, athletic and otherwise. We had all been Shamrocks in training and even as freshmen had a well-formed sense of what Catholic Central stood for and what was expected of us. Passing this on to the third generation came naturally. So that’s it, Fr. Paramo. With any luck, in nine years or so we will be starting our fourth generation. We thank John Ronayne ’64 for his enlightening account of a family loyalty to CC that was amazing to our readers. Any heritage families that have still not submitted a photo may do so for inclusion in future issues. – Ed. Dear CC Alumni, Nine months ago, Catholic Central’s Class of 2015 began its final school year at 27225 Wixom Road. Entering the building on their first day of school, most seniors were probably concerned with things like their upcoming sports season, Boys’ Bowl and Homecoming, and, of course, their summer reading tests. Graduation was likely one of the last things on their minds. Yet, here they are in May, ready to cross the stage at Hill Auditorium to receive their Detroit Catholic Central High School diplomas, ushering them into the next chapter of their lives and raising a host of new concerns: living away from home, discerning a career path, attending classes with girls in them, and so on. Indeed, it is an exciting time in their lives. Over the past nine months, I’ve seen this excitement manifested in many ways,

not only in our current students, but also in our alumni. When alumni return to CC, they seem to undergo a transformation, even if Catholic Central called a different building home during their years. 27th ANNUAL ALUMNI DINNER The 27th Alumni Dinner was held at Laurel Manor Banquet Center on Thursday, April 16, 2015. The dinner is sponsored by the Catholic Central Alumni Association and honors some of the great alumni and Basilian Fathers who have done so much to bring honor and distinction to Detroit Catholic Central High School. This year’s recipients of the Fr. Canning Harrison Distinguished Alumni Award were Rudy Seichter ’59 and Fr. Richard Ranalletti, C.S.B. A graduate of CC’s Class of ’59, Rudy was a member of the Gabriel Richard Club, Student Council, and 1959 State Hockey Championship Team. Fr. Enright married Rudy and his wife Rosemary fifty years ago last fall. They have two wonderful children, Karl and Anne; two wonderful grandchildren; and a loving extended family. Rudy holds degrees from the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor and Wayne State University. His business career includes IBM, where he worked Rudy Seichter ’59 for 12 years in major account systems sales/marketing; ADP where he spent 12 years in VP/GM/SVP positions in Networking and Automotive Divisions; five years at Bell & Howell as VP/GM National Accounts Division, President/CEO Powersports Division; Creative Solutions Inc. as Officer/Principal; and consulting to software companies. In 2007, following his business career, Rosemary encouraged Rudy to remain active by getting involved with CC. At the request of Father Elmer, he began working within the Advancement Office as the Director of Planned Giving, encouraging CC alumni to include the school in their estate/ legacy plans as their personal thank you for the opportunity they had to attend CC and to assure future young men that same opportunity. Rudy acknowledges that he owes a great deal to the Basilian Fathers, especially Fr. Enright, for the example they set for him and many CC men.

Born in Rochester, New York, on September 3, 1944, Fr. Richard Ranalletti, C.S.B. graduated from two Basilian schools in Rochester: Aquinas Institute [High School] in 1962 and St. John Fisher College in 1966. He entered the Basilian Fathers’ novitiate at Erindale, Ontario (outside Toronto), and professed his religious vows on September 8, 1967. Spending his seminary years in residence in Erindale’s St. Basil’s College, he completed his Master of Divinity in 1972 at the University of St. Michael’s College, also a Basilian institution, within the University of Toronto. Shamrock Athletics CC Alumni Basketball League

ALUMNI SOFTBALL LEAGUE

The 10th season of the Alumni Association Basketball League (AABL) was another great success! Thanks to Andy Slankster ’94 and the entire Alumni Board Early Involvement Committee for organizing the league once again. Alumni, friends, and current students continue to come out in droves to hit the hardwood for some friendly (and sometimes heated!) competition. This year’s winners were The Red Team in the Belmont Division, The Volts in the Outer Drive Division, and The Free Beer and Hot Wings Team in the Breakfast Drive Division.

Opening day for the Alumni Softball League’s second annual season is scheduled for Thursday, May 21. Registration for individuals and teams is open! The league is open to alumni and fathers of alumni. The cost is $50 per player or $600 per team. Games will be played on Thursday nights for 10-12 weeks at either 6:30 or 7:45. There will be no games on July 8. All games are played on the baseball fields at CC. If you are interested in putting a team together or joining an existing team, please contact John Connor ’84 at ccalumnisoftball@gmail.com as soon as possible. The inaugural season was a great success last year, so openings are expected to fill quickly this year!

Upcoming Reunions Campus Crusade The Alumni Office’s Campus Crusade was a great success this year! In all, the Alumni Office visited ten different campuses throughout Michigan and Indiana and reunited with over 100 young alumni throughout the year. UM – Dearborn On Thursday, January 15, the Alumni Office traveled to Buddy’ Pizza in Dearborn to host some of our young men currently attending UM – Dearborn. Many graduates there have kept in touch and remain close friends, keeping the Spirit of CC alive. Eastern Michigan The office traveled to Aubree’s Pizza in Ypsilanti’s Depot Town on January 22 to meet with Shamrocks currently attending EMU. Alumni young and old were present to share some good pizza and good conversation. Wayne State/UD – Mercy On Thursday, February 19, the Alumni Office traveled downtown to Midtown’s historic Traffic Jam & Snug to reunite with Shamrocks currently attending Wayne State and UD – Mercy. Nearly ten alumni were in attendance to help bridge the gap between generations of Shamrocks from the 60s through 2014. University of Michigan The Office traveled to Ann Arbor on Thursday, March 12, to host Shamrocks now wearing maize and blue. Over ten Wolverines were able to meet at Arbor Brewing Company (owned by Matt Greff ’85) for a few hours of good food and good times. Michigan State On Thursday, March 19, the Alumni Office traveled to East Lansing hoping for a big turnout at Dublin Square, and the former Shamrocks and current Spartans did not disappoint as over 20 Shamrocks turned out to reunite with their alma mater. Indeed, the Spirit of CC is thriving in East Lansing!

Shamrocks in Florida Reunion The 7th Annual All-Classes Florida Reunion was held on March 21, 2015, at Sharky’s on the Pier in Venice, Florida. Over 125 alumni and family were present to stoke the Spirit of CC flames in sunny Florida. This event continues to grow in size and popularity, and we hope that trend continues. The Class of 1955 remained the best represented class, with the Class of 1960 a close second. If you find yourself near Venice next year, we encourage you to try to stop by Sharky’s for some good food, fun, and fellowship. Thank you, once again, to Mike Pachota ’71 and Sharky’s for their incredible generosity and hospitality! Fr. Dick Elmer, C.S.B. ’46 and the Class of ‘55

Shamrock Bar Association The Shamrock Bar Association, comprised of the many CC alumni who are judges, attorneys, and law students, held its Spring meeting at CC on Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Nearly 30 alumni were in attendance, including a few with over 40 years of experience and a few who recently passed the Bar Exam. They began with Mass celebrated by Fr. John Huber, C.S.B. During the meeting, the Hon. Lita Popke was presented with a Distinguished Lawyer Award. Judge Popke is a member of the Wayne County Circuit Court.

In addition, she is the mother of a current junior and has been the coach of CC’s Mock Trial team for the past two years. The program had a great year this year, fielding two teams, one of which earned Honorable Mention in the Oakland County Tournament. With many team members returning next year, the program has a very bright future. If you are an attorney or judge and would like to help out next year, please reach out to the Alumni Office.

Eternally Grateful

Dear Alumni, In our Winter issue of the Aluminator, I reintroduced

Since 1928, Detroit Catholic Central HS has been the grateful beneficiary of the final wishes of many alumni, family, and friends who request that Memorial Gifts, given in their honor, be designated to benefit the young men of CC.

to you our Spirit of CC Annual Fund and announced our goal this year of $600,000. This total would allow us to help the maximum number of students and offset our tuition gap to keep CC tuition affordable for everyone.

It is our tradition that we make every effort to make a personal appearance at wakes and funerals for all of our alumni. It is very important that we express our appreciation and gratitude to the families of these sons of Mary, Alma Mater. Memorial Gifts entrusted to CC are designated to support the Catholic Central Endowment Trust Fund, which supports our Tuition Assistance Program. All Memorial Gifts establish a permanent memorial fund in the name of the deceased. That fund remains at CC for eternity. The following is an example of the members of the CC family who have established such funds this year. May they rest in peace knowing that we are eternally grateful.

I am happy to report that we are 84%

of the way there, and we have already surpassed last year’s total. Our deadline to reach our goal is June 30, and I would encourage you to support our Annual Fund if you have not done so already. The Spirit of CC Annual Fund is the most direct way to impact our students today. All gifts to this fund are investments in the Shamrocks walking our halls right now, investments in the men of tomorrow. Thank you for your support and for making a Catholic Central education possible for future generations of Shamrocks!

Dear Reader, I am a member of the class of 1966. I have enjoyed the communications you have sent to me over the years. My memories of the years at CC will always be with me. I have contributed to the building fund drive because I know what the school stands for. I retired this year from the practice of Dentistry after 41 years. I look forward to starting the next chapter of my book of life just as I did when I graduated in 1966. Keep preparing your students for life just as I was way back when! Sincerely,

BUSINESS

PROFILE

Spotlighting Alumni & Members of Our CC Family

ALUMNI BUSINESS PROFILE: Arbor Brewing Company by Dan Collins ’84, Director of Advancement BEER, BUSINESS, AND CC BROTHERHOOD A couple of years ago, one of our most loyal CC alumni dropped off a six-pack of beer at the Alumni Office. In fact, his freshman son dropped off the beer. So picture if you will, the sight of a young CC freshman walking into school with a six pack of bottled beer. An unusual sight indeed. But this was not just any beer, this was Michael Faricy’s Stout made by the Arbor Brewing Company. We immediately knew the name Michael Faricy. Sadly, our brother Michael Faricy ’85 died, much too young, in an automobile accident in 1990. In fact, Michael is memorialized every day here at CC as his name and face adorn our Memorial Wall. I was told by the dad of our brave freshman that he picked up the beer after seeing it featured in a display for Arbor Brewing Company at his local grocery store. Our reaction was one of admiration and inquiry. What a cool thing_our late brother Michael had a beer bearing his name. But by whom? What was the connection between Michael and the Arbor Brewing Company? The carrying case for the six bottles answered part of the question. It was labeled with the following statement: This recipe was originally created as a home brew in 1993 to commemorate the life and times of our dear friend Michael Faricy. The investigation prompted a web search, and it was then that we discovered the founder and owner of the Arbor Brewing Company was CC’s very own Matt Greff ’85. Matt and Michael were best friends, classmates, and brother Shamrocks. What an inspirational tribute by Matt to his beloved friend. The story of Matt Greff and Arbor Brewing Company is a fun and fascinating one – a success story built with hard work, dedication, and commitment, as well as a little bit of goodness, discipline, and knowledge. The story began when young Matt got the opportunity to study abroad in Germany while completing his Political Science degree from Kalamazoo College. In Germany, Matt enjoyed the educational experience, but really immersed himself in the culture, especially the love of beer by the German people. THE STORY OF ARBOR BREWING COMPANY The original Arbor Brewing Company (ABC) Pub and Eatery opened in downtown Ann Arbor in July 1995. ABC’s commitment to handcrafted beer, exceptional hospitality, local sourcing, community involvement, and environmental stewardship has been the foundation for its growth and success for nearly two decades. Matt and his wife Rene share a passion for beer and adventure and founded ABC as a husband and wife team. By their late 20s the Greffs had become disenchanted with their corporate gigs, and, soon after brewpubs were legalized in Michigan, they set about opening their own brewery. They raised their startup capital through a network of friends, family, and co-workers and became the first brewpub to open in Ann Arbor and the fifth to open in Michigan’s fledgling microbrewery movement.

Left: Matt Greff ’85 and his wife, Rene. Right: Michael Faricy’s Stout label In 2006, Matt and Rene began searching for a place to open a packaging brewery to produce and bottle what had become their “award winning” beers for state-wide distribution. As long-time Ypsilanti residents, they wanted to spearhead an economic renaissance in their hometown, so they chose one of the abandoned warehouses in Ypsilanti to fulfill their dream. So was born the ABC Microbrewery and Beergarden in Ypsilanti. In 2009, Matt and Rene expanded the world of ABC on an international scale to India. Since opening to the public in December 2012 in Bangalore, India, ABC India has quickly become Bangalore’s premier brewpub. Matt and Rene are not only incredibly successful business people, but also very community and environmentally conscious and humanitarian focused. They give of themselves and give back to the communities in which they both live and serve. Their recognition and awards for such are countless. And their awards include Gold Medal recognition for their Michael Faricy Stout. Matt and Rene are also passionate about philanthropy and host numerous fundraising events throughout the year. As pioneers of the craft brewing industry, Matt and Rene share a passion for each other, for their friend Michael Faricy, and for humanity. They also insist upon using local ingredients, staying active in their community, and doing their part to preserve the environment. Arbor Brewing Company’s award winning beers are distributed throughout the state at Meijer, Busch’s, and Whole Foods Markets. Both ABC locations in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti are available for large parties and offer a variety of options including a Taproom, Lounge, and Beer Garden. Monthly events include Live Music Monday’s, Beer Tasting, Trivia Nights, and a variety of festivals. For locations, events and additional information about the Arbor Brewing Company visit www.arborbrewing.com.

ANNUAL

DRIVE

Theme for 2015: “Movie Marathon”

2015 DRIVE Results - Total $ Raised

THE DRIVE RESULTS This year’s DRIVE was another huge success! The Student Ticket DRIVE is an annual event that is synonymous with school spirit at Catholic Central. Each year, students sell raffle tickets and collect money for tuition assistance. The seven school days that make up “DRIVE week” are comprised of half days and assemblies that promote school spirit and competition amongst the students, faculty, and staff. The theme for this year was “Movie Marathon.” Each homeroom class selected a movie to represent. The freshmen had movies from Twentieth Century Fox, the sophomores Paramount, the juniors Disney-Pixar, and the seniors Warner Brothers. The videos, entertainment, and various shenanigans that filled the week were most enjoyable. The total amount brought in reached $445,293.13! That money will go directly toward tuition assistance for next year’s students. Our new Principal, Fr. Dennis Noelke, C.S.B. ’71, made it clear to the students that many families will be able to receive much-needed financial support toward tuition because of their efforts and generosity. For their efforts, Fr. Noelke rewarded the students with 10 DRIVE holidays.

CATHOLIC CENTRAL MAKES CHRISTIAN SERVICE A PRIORITY by Lonnie Huhman [originally published January 10, 2015]

C

ommunity service at Detroit Catholic Central High School is just as important as anything a student learns at the school in Novi. Whether supporting mission work, sponsoring community outreach, hosting fundraisers, or starting a parents group, Catholic Central makes a big and important impact. “They remind our students of their responsibilities to assist those who are in need. It reminds them not only to think about themselves, their wants and desires, but our call as Christians to serve our brothers and sisters,” said Fr. Dennis Noelke, C.S.B. ’71 of the mission and community service projects.

Results Last year, students volunteered for 19,582 hours, putting the school over 176,000 hours of community service since it moved to Novi. This includes tutoring services such as a group of students who commute to Detroit Cristo Rey High School every week. CC students raise money in a number of ways for the Basilian Missions in Colombia and Mexico, as well as for their brother school Cristo Rey, including Spirit Days and homeroom collections. So far this school year, they have collected around $7,000. Since moving to Novi in 2005, CC students have donated more than $150,000 to the missions. “There are many efforts that our students have helped. In Mexico, for example, we are helping one of our Basilian parishes to complete work on a badly needed church,” Noelke said. “In Colombia, we provide money so that the Basilian school there can purchase necessary supplies for the students.”

Community service at Detroit Catholic Central High School…makes a big and important impact.

Above: Fr. Dennis Noelke, C.S.B. ‘71 and students at the Christmas toy drive.

CC is a wonderful and supporting place, according to CC Mothers’ Club President Sherry Diederich. She said it’s evident through the various tragic events that unfortunately have happened in the recent past and how CC has responded. They are still trying to help and support the Cipriano Fund. This past month, pictures were taken at the annual Christmas dance, with all of the proceeds donated back to the Cipriano Fund. She said the parent groups also help support the David Widzinski Memorial golf outing, the Dominique Fisher Memorial Fund, the Matt Sorishio event, and many more causes by donating spirit wear for auction items and spreading the word and getting board members to participate and help out where needed. “In all, our community service is a chance to help the young men who are entrusted to our care to grow as men who know, understand, and value the importance of sacrifice for the benefit of others,” said Kevin Walters, who coordinates CC’s community service work.

More help ahead Two mission trips are being planned for 2015. Fr. Noelke said the school is continuing its mission trip to Peru in July. Also, a group of students will be going to Jamaica in April.

Every year, CC students raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan by running a two-mile “Shamrock Shuffle” to kick off the Boys’ Bowl-Homecoming weekend. Students raised a record $9,329.13 this year, bringing the total for the past 18 years to $127,824.47. The top homeroom this year raised $1,600.

Walters said some of the upcoming school-wide community outreach activities include a campaign to reach out to American soldiers, collect items for them and to become pen pals, “thanking those who risk their lives so that we can sleep securely and peacefully every night.” He said students will also be raising funds to help build a school for youngsters in Africa.

CC parents and alumni have come through big time as well. Each year, $10,000 of donations, received from parents and alumni, are used for tuition assistance. This past year, the CC Mothers’ Club rummage sale sold out of children’s coats in the first hour, and the clothing or items that weren’t sold during the rummage sale were donated to St. Vincent DePaul.

“I hope that when students graduate from Catholic Central, they will have a commitment of service to others,” Fr. Noelke said.

THE CATHOLIC CENTRAL TRADITION

of Giving to the Missions / THE BASILIAN FATHERS MISSIONS by Fr. John Huber, C.S.B.

Since I have been at Catholic Central, alumni have told me some “colorful” ways in which my Basilian confrères had motivated CC students to donate to the Missions over the years. While those remain memories of the past, despite the lack of a greater number of Basilians in the classroom today, student generosity in giving to the Missions remains strong. Since I have been at CC, at least $15,000 has been collected each year, usually in homerooms. A vast majority of that money has been sent directly to our Basilian Fathers Missions office in Sugar Land, Texas, and then funneled to our Basilian Fathers Missions in Mexico and Colombia. Great work is being done in Tehuacán, Puebla, Mexico, at La Parroquia San Lorenzo and the rural areas it reaches out to, as well as in Cali, Colombia, where our parish, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, also has a large Catholic school for students from the surrounding barrios. We also help God’s people in a challenged area of Medellín, Colombia, where La Parroquia San Basilio gathers the faithful from an economically poor barrio on a hillside. Some of our collected Mission funds have also helped subsidize CC Mission trips. This year we will have two groups of students spending their vacation time to offer assistance to God’s children abroad. CC Spanish teacher Mrs. Renée Zwick will be leading a group to Peru, while English teacher Ms. Mary Stuart will lead a group of students to Jamaica. In addition, mission funds have helped students to pay tuition at our brother school in Southwest Detroit, Detroit Cristo Rey High School, which is sponsored by the Basilian Fathers. The culture of giving to the Missions remains an important aspect of the overall CC experience. Please keep the Basilian Fathers Missions in your prayers. Fr. John Huber, C.S.B. joined Fr. Frank Amico, C.S.B. and INSA students as part of an official visit to Colombia on behalf of the Basilian Congregation.

TEXAS A brief History of the

BASILIAN MISSIONS

The mission work of the Basilian Fathers began in Texas and then grew into Mexico and Colombia. They work among the poor of the countries they serve in an ongoing effort to assist them in their struggle for human dignity and self-reliance. In cooperation with the local bishops and together with the religious of other communities, they present to the people new ways of experiencing more fully the goodness and presence of God in all human activity. In keeping

1936 - MEXICAN AMERICAN MISSIONS IN TEXAS Fathers Thomas P. O’Rourke, C.S.B., Daniel Dillon, C.S.B., and Joseph Dillon, C.S.B, all native Texans, initiated the missionary work among the Mexican American people in the Diocese of Houston/Galveston. Brothers Daniel and Joseph Dillon graduated from the school founded by the Basilian Fathers in 1900 in Texas – now called St. Thomas High School and located in Houston. Fr. Daniel Dillon (who would later be the founding principal at Catholic Central High School in Detroit) was an excellent administrator and motivator. Fr. Joseph Dillon, the younger brother of Fr. Daniel, began the implementation of the dream of Fr. O’Rourke and Fr. Daniel to establish a ministry to the Spanish speaking in Texas. His work began in 1936. Our Lady of Guadalupe mission was opened in 1939. In 1936, the Basilians had been teaching in Texas for many years and had become aware of the plight of the Mexican people in the communities surrounding Houston. Thousands of Catholics were not receiving the sacraments because of a lack of priests who could speak Spanish. This led to a missionary outreach to the Spanishspeaking people along the Gulf coast, who were primarily poor, migrant laborers. In a few short years, the number of missions expanded from eight to more than forty, and the number of Mexican people attending services grew rapidly, necessitating additional Basilians to serve them. Over the years many Basilians came to work in these missions. The Basilians were motivated to establish permanent parishes when possible. By 1960, a mere 24 years from the beginning of the mission work in south Texas, active mission areas encompassed dozens of sites from Navasota to Matagorda, a distance of more than 150 miles. Today most of those missions have become self-sufficient parishes whose members no longer suffer from the poverty and prejudice that was present at the beginning. With this level of success, the Basilian Fathers left these parishes in the hands of the local clergy and moved to other areas.

MEXICO 1961 - BASILIAN FATHERS IN MEXICO St. Joseph Center, the home of the Basilian Fathers Latin American Apostolate in Sugar Land, Texas, is the base from which they responded to the call of Pope John XXIII to minister to the people of Mexico in 1961. In the fall of 1961, Fathers Max Murphy, C.S.B. and Frank Launtrie, C.S.B. traveled to Mexico at the invitation of the Archbishop of Mexico City. They formally took charge of the parish of San Juan Crisóstomo and missions in the surrounding barrios. The Catholic population within the boundaries of the parish was 10,000 people. The work began among the rural people who had migrated to the city and found only poverty, illiteracy, and a lack of religious training, instead of the better life they had expected. In 1962, construction of a catechetical center began. The building was to be used for religious education. One of the great achievements of the Basilians in Mexico was the development and introduction of the Catequesis Familiar (Catechesis of the Family). It was constructed and promoted primarily by Fathers Max Murphy, C.S.B., Ricardo Ramirez, C.S.B. (presently Bishop Emeritus of Las Cruces, New Mexico), and Frank Launtrie C.S.B., to form Christian witness and promote the foundations of a Christian community. The program has now spread throughout the country.

Bishop Ricardo Ramirez, C.S.B.

Bishop Ricardo Ramirez, C.S.B., a native of Bay City, Texas, is the first Basilian vocation from the Texas missions. He was born the very year that Fr. Dillon began his work there. As a Basilian seminarian he taught at CC. Later as a Basilian priest, he helped direct the Mexican American Cultural Center in San Antonio, Texas. On October 18, 1982, he was named the first Bishop of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

In recent years, the Basilian Fathers have left Mexico City and moved further south to Tehuacán. In the Mexican state of Puebla, the Basilians have a Novitiate at San Lorenzo, Tehuacan, and administer the Parish of San Lorenzo and its chapels. [The Novitiate is the first step in joining a religious community. It is a year of preparation for taking first vows. It is followed by the 24

Scholasticate where seminarians are educated for the priesthood.] San Lorenzo Church dates back to the 17th century and contains religious artifacts of great historic and cultural value. A new church is being constructed under the supervision of the Basilian Fathers to replace the existing building. Since it is the Basilian plan to develop native clergy where they work, the missions in Mexico have produced vocations, too. On June 6, 1987, René Javier Espejel González and Marco Antonio Hernandez Molina were ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Ricardo Ramirez, C.S.B. in San Lorenzo parish. On June 2, 1990, Marciano Dominguez and José Isidro Castillo were ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Ramirez, C.S.B. in San Juan Crisostómo parish.

CC ALUMNI IN THE MISSIONS Two of the priests currently working at the Basilian Missions are CC alumni. Fr. Robert Seguin, C.S.B. ’58 is the novice master at Bogotá, Colombia, for the many Basilian novices who are seeking to become Basilians. At CC, Fr. Seguin was the first National Science Fair Award winner. He joined the Basilian Fathers after graduation and went on to earn a degree in biochemistry. After teaching for several years, he eventually was asked to join the missions and has worked in Colombia for many years. Fr. John Boscoe, C.S.B. ’61 also graduated from CC. He joined the Basilian Fathers after graduation, and, after working many years in the Basilian missions in Mexico, he now runs the mission center at Sugar Land, Texas. It is the center of organization and fundraising for the Basilian missions in Mexico and Colombia.

COLOMBIA 1987 - BASILIAN FATHERS IN COLOMBIA Under the leadership of Fr. Frank Amico, C.S.B., the Basilian Fathers went to Colombia in the summer of 1987. They took over a parish-school complex in Cali, Colombia, part of the poorest area of the city known as Agua Blanca. At first they were only in charge of the parish, but after a few years they took over the school INSA (Instituto Nuestra Señora de la Asunción). The school serves the primary grades through high school and has become one of the most outstanding schools in the state of Valle del Cauca. Because of the excellent language skills learned at the school, which include English, Latin, French, Italian, Chinese, and Japanese, a number of parish youth were chosen to serve as guides during World Youth Day in Rome and in Toronto. Since 2000, the year the first class graduated from INSA, seventy-six percent of its graduates went on to further their education at a University or Technical School. The results of the 2010 Colombian equivalent of the SAT in the U.S. determined that the students in the final year of high school at INSA ranked number one of all the high schools in Valle del Cauca.

The next foundation was in the city of Medellín in 1995 with a Novitiate in the center of the city in barrio Prado Centro. A year later, the Basilians began serving the parish of Ecce Homo, where they worked for ten years. This parish was part of the area of the city known as the “13th Commons,” which for three years was referred to as a war zone because of a conflict between the guerilla and paramilitary groups. Thankfully, this conflict ended in 2003. The third foundation was in the capital city of Bogotá in 1997. The Basilian Fathers opened a scholasticate in Bogotá. They named it “Casa Annonay” in honor of the French cradle of the Basilian Congregation with hopes that the Colombian Annonay would serve as a source for native vocations. In 2011, Fr. Robert Seguin, C.S.B. ’58 was reassigned to Casa Annonay in Bogotá, where he assumed responsibility for the eight postulants then in residence. In July 2011, the Basilians were blessed with the arrival of nineteen young Colombian men interested in becoming priests and pursuing the Basilian Way of Life. These young men came from as far north as Cartagena and as far south as Cali.

MISSION COLLECTIONS and their

Destination One of the memories that all CC alumni have is that of Mission collections. For many decades, at least back to the time of Fr. Ned Donoher, C.S.B., the generosity of CC students as been exemplary in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Here we combine items about that generosity with a description of the most important destination for those contributions. They go to the missions of the Church in general and in particular to the Basilian Fathers Missions. The article from HometownLife (see page 20) makes it clear that the generosity of students

THE MISSIONS A PERSONAL VIEW by Fr. Ray Paramo, C.S.B.

From the beginning the Church has been a missionary church. The Apostles themselves spent their lives taking the message of the Gospel to any place that had not yet heard it. St. James went as far west as Spain and St. Thomas went as far east as India. The others labored in the vast area in between. I was always aware of this, but there was a source of confusion in my understanding. When I was young, I went to church at two different parishes. One had been a mission of the Oblate Fathers. The question for me was why this was called a mission since the people it served were not only Catholic but had been so for countless generations. I thought that a mission had to be only to places that had never heard the Gospel or that had forgotten it. Recently, when a friend who lives in southern France invited me to visit, he asked if I would say Mass in his village because they haven’t had a priest there in a long time. He said, “Think of it as Death Comes to the Archbishop in reverse.” He was referring to the Willa Cather novel about a French priest who goes to the American southwest to renew the Church where it has faded. In recent times, places in Europe have been called missionary countries because they seem to have lost their traditions of Catholicism. Yet no one thinks of sending missionaries to Paris or Berlin. Such a thing would seem gauche, if not counterproductive. Similarly, there may be places that need re-Christianizing which are not serviced because they are seen to be culturally above us. For example, we probably wouldn’t send missionaries to Grosse Pointe or River Oaks (the equivalent in Houston) if they seemed to need it. There are still places in the world that have never heard the Gospel, and missionaries go there as the Apostles did. However, we usually send missionaries to places that are economically or culturally deprived. This is where my understanding had to grow. We send missionaries where the Catholic traditions may be strong and long-standing but where the lack of resources and the unavailability of priests leaves many without the sacraments and the benefits of Christian education. This means that when we send missionaries to such places we are embarking on a cooperation in faith. We are not sending our faith or even our culture abroad; we are collaborating with people who already have the faith by helping them to have the benefits of the sacraments and Christian education. It is a cooperative effort that gives growth both to the receiver and to the giver. Our students, in giving to the Missions, have been asked to keep this in mind. That is why they not only give what they can, but also go on mission trips to learn and grow in their own faith.

A VOCATION AS A TEACHER AND A MISSIONARY by Fr. Robert Seguin, C.S.B. ’58

Early Years I was born in Detroit in 1940. My parents had both been born in Malta and met in Detroit. I grew up in northwest Detroit at St. Scholastica Parish, where I attended grade school. Afterwards, my father enrolled me in Catholic Central High School, which was close to where we lived. I worked on the weekends and in the summers to cover the cost of tuition. I was very impressed by the spirit of fraternity which existed among the Basilians and their openness and closeness to the students. Attracted by their spirit and simplicity of life, I entered the Novitiate in 1958 and made my first profession in the community the following year. I found myself among a community of friends. There was quite a group from CC who entered the Novitiate that year. Among those who were professed at the end of the year were Tom Bales ’58, now deceased, Jim Quinlan ’58, and Fr. Gordon Judd, C.S.B. ’58. Our novitiate year began in Rochester, New York, and ended at the newly constructed St. Basil’s Novitiate in Pontiac, Michigan, on Giddings Road. After that I studied at the University of St. Michael’s in Toronto for one year and then for four years at the University of Windsor, where I studied chemistry and then biochemistry. After these years I returned to CC to teach from 1964 to 1966, which was a highlight in my time of formation. Then I returned to Toronto to finish my studies at St. Basil Seminary and was ordained a priest on December 13, 1969.

All that we have done in Cali, in Medellín, and in Bogotá is because of so much support we have received … especially from the contributions of Catholic Central’s mission collection. After my ordination I returned briefly to teach at CC, but before the end of the year, I was transferred to Aquinas Institute in Rochester, New York. From there I returned to the University of Windsor as a chaplain for five years. These were memorable years, working with foreign students, especially those from Hong Kong and the Caribbean Islands. During that time we began a Chinese Catholic Community on campus. I was next appointed to do formation work in our community. I spent five years serving the community in different Novitiates – first in Detroit and then in Sugar Land, Texas. After finishing my years as a Novice

Director, I was appointed as an assistant at St. Anne’s Parish in Houston where Fr. Vince Dulock, C.S.B. was pastor. (Vince had also been in my Novitiate in 1958.)

My Presence in Colombia After several years in St. Anne’s parish in Houston, I was asked by Fr. Frank Amico, C.S.B. if I would be willing to be part of a team that was being formed to establish a Basilian house in Colombia. I told him I would if I was able to learn Spanish. I thus ended up studying Spanish. In 1987, I went to Cali as part of a group of six in our first Basilian foundation in Colombia, then to Medellín as pastor. I then went to Bogotá to work with our novices and seminarians as a Director of Formation. Today I am in Santa Marta with seven very fine young men who are preparing to take their first vows in our community. I look back on my decision to come to Colombia as God’s will for me. When I came here, I thought of it as a major commitment of my life, and it has turned out to be just that. My years in Colombia have been marked by a continuing and growing faith and love for the Lord and for all who have been part of my life. I can testify of many people in Colombia who have chosen to forgive rather than take revenge, people who are generous and creative, people who have suffered greatly, people wounded by so much conflict and yet have maintained a certain hope, and many people who have dedicated their lives to serving their own people as professionals. One of the highlights over the years was sending a group of 30 young people to World Youth Day in Canada. The young people were from Cali, Medellín, and Bogotá. The crosses which Pope John Paul II gave to all the participants had been made in our workshops in Medellín and Bogotá. In Cali we run an excellent school for the poor of the area and a parish which serves three different communities. The school is called INSA, Instituto Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, and has an excellent reputation as one of the best schools in the department [state] of Valle del Cauca. The strong point of the school is its dedication to teaching goodness, discipline, and knowledge in the Basilian tradition. In our parish in Medellín we can boast of a workshop for teaching craft and carpentry skills, a center for learning industrial sewing, a kindergarten, a dining room for children and the elderly where they can have breakfast and lunch from Monday to Saturday, an Internet room, and medical assistance to people on a daily basis.

Fr. Robert Seguin, C.S.B. ’58 with novices

“Help the poor for the commandment’s sake…” ECCLESIASTICUS 29:9 We also began a school in the area that was taken over by the city after three years and is now known as El Centro Educativo Barrio Olaya Herrera. Recently, the city dedicated a pre-school for three hundred children in the barrios of the parish and called it Jardín Infantil Buen Comienzo Presbítero Roberto Seguín (Fr. Robert Seguin Good Start Kindergarten). All that we have done in Cali, in Medellín, and in Bogotá is because of so much support we have received over the years of prayers and of donations from the north, especially from the contributions of Catholic Central’s mission collection. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

for study, for manual work, and for a limited apostolate among the poor with time for sports and recreation. Our daily life revolves around the Eucharist and the daily rhythm of praying the divine office of the Church. What I would ask of you is your prayers for Basilian missionaries in Colombia as well as for our confrères on missions in Mexico. It is a great source of pride that much of the work of our foundations has been taken over by native vocations. Pray also for the growth of our community in the north. This year there are two novices in Sugar Land, Texas, one in Toronto, Canada, two in Mexico, and seven here in Colombia. Keep the Basilian Community in your prayers. [Counting novices and scholastics, there are currently 24 young men in Basilian formation.]

Our latest adventure is opening a Novitiate in Santa Marta on the northern coast of Colombia. Santa Marta is a small city with many needs. There are just two other male religious communities in Santa Marta, the Franciscans and the Vincentians. There are no houses of formation here other than the seminary, which has about 60 seminarians. The Novitiate is a time dedicated to the preparation of the novices for taking their first vows. There is ample time for prayer,

I offer all of the alumni of CC my prayers for all of you, especially the many I have known in my years as a student at CC and in my years teaching there as a scholastic and as a priest. I rejoice in the Lord for all He has done for me and through me in my life, and I am thankful that I am still active and can continue to serve Him in some small way by building up His kingdom. All I have tried to do over these years is to love God and to love and serve his people. CC ALUMNI PROFILES • SPRING 2015

CC BAND IN SPAIN FR. JOHN HUBER, C.S.B.

REPORTS FROM

EUROPE:

Eighty members of the Catholic Central Band have returned from Spain where they performed in two cities, Segovia and Madrid last winter. The video for Segovia can be seen here: http://youtu.be/Ds0Z05Ft5l8 The band also participated in the world-famous “Calbagata de Reyes” on the evening of January 5, 2015. The parade begins Spain’s celebration of the Epiphany and is shown live on Spanish television and in many other countries. When the CC band passed by the TVE cameras, the anchorwoman stated that Catholic Central is “uno de los mejores liceos en los Estados Unidos” (one of the best high schools in the United States). You can see a video of CC’s participation here: http://youtu.be/awS5M944i1k The day after the parade, I traveled to Annonay [the birthplace of the Basilian Fathers in France] to begin a visitation there, and I noticed that the parade was covered on the French news and showed our CC musicians.
