A Message from the

President

Esteemed alumni and friends, Our annual commencement ceremony takes place at Hill Auditorium in Ann Arbor. Father Donoher loved having the event there because he found it a dignified space to have a stately ceremony. I am grateful to him for having set such a high standard for graduation. Our ceremony is a wonderful celebration of our young men, and the atmosphere condones noble behavior. Our Men of CC, knowing that we have loved them and dedicated our time, energy, expertise, and faith in them over the four years of their Catholic Basilian secondary education, show us how much respect they have for their alma mater through their conduct at commencement exercises. The ceremony takes place in the afternoon, and beginning at 10 pm that evening, and throughout the night until daybreak, these new alumni return to CC to spend one last time together as a class. As I was walking between the cafeteria and the gyms well after midnight, I was inspired by what I witnessed. Dads were playing card games with the guys in the gym, moms were setting up tables of food and calling bingo numbers, and moms and dads alike were supervising various games and activities. I am amazed that our Men of CC can so easily resist the temptation to go out and have fun on their own, and actually end up spending the night back at the school from which they graduated, in the company of their own parents. It is a testament to the bond of brotherhood: they do not want to let go of CC, nor do they want to let go of one another. This same fraternal bond exists in so many ways with all of our graduated classes, whether from just a few years ago, or several decades ago. In a sense it defies logic. Logic would tell you that the Class of 2015 would not want to return back to high school on the evening of their graduation and be supervised by parents. Logic would tell you that once high school is over, students let go of the past: they create new bonds in college and in their professions, begin families, and lose touch with their high school classmates. Catholic high schools, however, seem to foster a sense of fidelity to an extent that other high schools usually do not. Before coming to CC, I worked at several other Basilian high schools, both single-gender male and coed. Each one shares in this sense of fidelity. However, I can honestly admit that nowhere have I seen that fidelity not only to the school itself, but also to the Basilian Fathers and to fellow classmates, to the great extent that I have witnessed it here at Catholic Central. The number of Men of CC who remain friends for life is incredible. Not only do they enjoy one another’s company at reunions and school events, but CC brothers are faithful to one another through all kinds of life events. What a gift this is! What an inspiration this is! In this issue of the Aluminator, various classes are highlighted, including the Class of 1965, which celebrates its 50th reunion. Each and every class is dear to our school, and I know that so many alumni remain close to many of their brothers from their respective graduating class. Thank you for your fidelity to CC, and for your fidelity to one another. In this issue you will also find information about our Capital Campaign for students, “Teach Us to Be Men,” which has three main focuses: student safety, quality faculty attraction and retention, and the financial assistance of families of modest incomes. Please prayerfully consider what level of support you may be able to contribute. The Lord Jesus has greatly blessed our CC community with such outstanding alumni. I know that alumni from every decade inspire current Men of Catholic Central to a strong affection for one another and for their alma mater. May our patroness, Mary Alma Mater, continue to bless you and your families. Gratefully,

Fr. John B. Huber, C.S.B., Ed.D. President

MILITARY Serving Our Country

Lt. David Galiyas ’07 Surface Warfare Officer U.S. Navy Reasons for Enlisting I applied for and received a Naval Reserve Officer’s Training Corps (NROTC) scholarship as a senior at CC. NROTC is a program through which the Navy pays for your undergraduate education while you also take Naval Science (Navigation, Naval Engineering, etc.) and Military Leadership courses as part of your curriculum. As a midshipman you also partake in summer Active Duty training with actual Navy units to decide what warfare community you want to be a part of (Surface [ships], Aviation, Submarines, Special Warfare). Upon graduation, you receive an officer’s commission as an Ensign (O1) in the Navy, and you begin your Naval career. I graduated from Notre Dame in 2011 and commissioned from the Notre Dame NROTC unit that spring. I decided to do NROTC for several reasons, chief of which was the chance to serve my country, as well as the opportunity to see the world and be a leader in a tactical environment. I chose the Navy because it offered the most flexibility for what I wanted to do, as well as my family’s familiarity with the service and the Department of the Navy (my dad, Lt.Col. Dave Galiyas, USMC (Ret), is a 1982 graduate of the Naval Academy where he commissioned as a Marine officer and flew F-4 Phantom and F/A-18 Hornet fighters). Currently Stationed I’m currently stationed at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where I serve as an Assistant Plans and Policies Officer/Staff Mine Warfare Officer on the Commander, Amphibious Squadron Six (COMPHIBRON SIX) staff. Most Rewarding Experience My most rewarding experience in the Navy has been the opportunity to lead sailors as a Surface Warfare Officer. Ship life is not easy, but American sailors are always up to any task at any time, anywhere. It is truly humbling to be a division officer and work with such a great, hardworking, and committed team.

“…every sailor, regardless of rank, knows it is his or her responsibility to their shipmates…”

Lessons Learned What I learned throughout my service is a tie between two lessons. First: Those you lead always take priority over you. Without your sailors you can’t accomplish anything, and it’s your primary responsibility as an officer to ensure your sailors’ well-being and that they have the tools

6

Lt. Dave Galiyas ’07 (Left)

to be successful in their respective roles onboard the ship. Even things as simple as getting leave requests promptly approved up the chain of command and returned mean everything. You take care of your people, and they’ll take care of you. Second: Attitude is everything. If you bring a positive attitude, a smile, and a couple of jokes to work with you every day, it makes all the difference in the world. Ship life can entail long, stressful hours, but a positive, can-do attitude can make the difference between mission accomplishment and mission failure. Goals for the Future I plan on transitioning to the Naval Reserves and the civilian sector this January. I’m currently exploring potential careers in management consulting or developmental economics, and I’d like to pursue an MBA sometime in the near future. CC Preparation CC taught me the values of hard work, leadership by example, and integrity. Teachers and coaches such as Father Ward, Mr. Rossi, Mrs. Sharkey, and Coach Mach were instrumental in my development not only as a student and an athlete, but also more importantly, as a Catholic and a man. Whether it was a hard calculus exam or running 350-yard sprints in full pads around the football field, each challenged and inspired me in his or her own way, helping me toward my goal of attending the University of Notre Dame and showing me a blueprint for how to lead my life as a Man of Catholic Central. Every day I try my best to live by a quote that Coach Mach had in his office: “What you are is God’s gift to you. What you make of yourself is your gift to God.” To me, that quote puts everything in perspective. Advice In the Navy, we live by the mantra: “Don’t Give Up the Ship.” It could be massive flooding threatening to sink the ship, an engineering main space oil fire, or a battle casualty, but every sailor, regardless of rank, knows it is his or her responsibility to their shipmates that they will do whatever it takes to save the ship. We all experience setbacks and adversity in our lives, but persevere, trust in yourself and those around you, and you will win the battle.

MEMORIES

Alumni Reminisce on School Days Gone By

The Mad Bowler UNMASKED Our intricate plan to flush out the dastardly Mad Bowler worked! With the false declaration that the statute of limitations applied to capital crimes, the culprit was lulled into sending a letter to the Editor recently. We are now working on having him detained and duly punished. In the meantime, here is his revealing and well-written letter. – Ed. June 16, 2015 Dear Father Paramo, I read with keen interest Joe Cheff’s ’74 remembrance of the Mad Bowler’s escapades at CC when it was located at 6565 West Outer Drive. Since the statute of limitations has expired and confession is good for the soul, I am writing to you today to reveal that I was, in fact, the Mad Bowler from 1975 to 1978. I was initially motivated to roll the ball to see if I could get away with it. I was a low profile student and didn’t cause any trouble. I figured that no one would suspect me. Before my first strike, I actually told my parents that I wanted to be the Mad Bowler. Sparing you the long story, they weren’t terribly supportive. However, they didn’t forbid me from doing it and insisted that the balls not be stolen. So here’s the first rumor I can quash – the bowling balls came from local rummage and garage sales. Even my mother eventually joined in and found a ball I could use. A twist that I added to improve my game was to prepare each ball with a small hatchet. The hatchet hacked dimples into the surface of the ball to increase the noise that the ball produced when it rolled down the hallway. I would smuggle the balls into school in my book bag and usually hide them behind a toilet in a restroom. At some point during the day, I would ask to be allowed to go to the restroom. I would grab the ball, head to the third floor, and launch the ball down the lane (more commonly known as a hallway). There was never a chance to stand and savor the moment. I had to start moving down the stairs the moment the ball left my hand. Making my escape was easy the first time. I returned to class and played dumb about what had happened.

After the first perfect game my thought immediately changed to “Can I do it again?” As time went on, of course, the teachers were more adamant about catching the Mad Bowler. I remember one time there was an exhibition of student art on the stairway landing between the floors. The artwork was mounted on large portable dividers, and I hid the ball behind one of them. After my roll I was heading down the stairs and heard someone rushing up. I quickly ducked behind one of the dividers and watched Fr. Acquaro run by me and up the stairs. I narrowly avoided becoming a gutter ball. My final roll came during an all-student pep rally in the gym. The gym doors were open and so I made an unusual strike on the first floor. I dashed for the exit on the west side of the building (facing Sinai hospital) but was surprised to find Fr. Harrison coming up the stairs from the basement. Even at his age he was right on my tail and may have briefly gotten a hand on my senior sweater, but I managed to make it over to Sinai and hide in the tall cypress trees planted along their building. I never understood why someone didn’t make the connection between my being excused from class and the appearance of the Mad Bowler. Perhaps they did and decided to allow a little madness to creep into the school now and again. In the summer between my junior and senior years, I added another dimension to the story of the Mad Bowler. One of our neighbors was making an around-the-world tour that summer. I typed up a dozen or so messages on self-adhesive labels. All cards were addressed to Fr. Mizzi, who was the CC principal at the time, using the self-adhesive labels. Our neighbor was fully onboard with the scheme. Each card carried messages such as, “Having a wonderful time here in Japan. See you in September. – MB” or, “I’m resting up here in Europe but fear not, I‘ll return in the fall. – MB.” My time as the Mad Bowler ended with my graduation, but the score sheet still had to be turned in. After the graduation ceremony – with my diploma in hand and my parents in tow – I sought out Fr. Mizzi. After a handshake and congratulations, I asked Fr. Mizzi about the postcards from the Mad Bowler. At first he seemed confused, but he quickly figured it out and a small smile seemed to appear on his face. All he would say was, “Job well done.” So now the CC family knows some of the backstory of the Mad Bowler. I wasn’t the first, nor was I the last. It was loads of fun being a part of a much-loved CC tradition at 6565 West Outer Drive. All the best, Paul Majewski ’78

Gentlemen, It is always refreshing every time I meet new people from our CC alumni family, not just around the school but out in public. Whether CC alumni, current students, or even new parents to our family, all have offered their congratulations on the school’s successes and achievements. They have offered their support and expressed how much they enjoy the numerous activities we have here at Catholic Central for alumni and their families. Equally satisfying is that parents of current students often express how much they appreciate and admire the close bond they see between CC alumni. As recently as this past Fourth of July weekend while out to dinner with my family (JP ’02, Patrick ’03, and Andrew ’10) in Northern Michigan, I noticed a young man with his family across the dining room. The young man was wearing a CC sweatshirt, and so, at the end of our meal I walked across the room to say

It is an exciting new year we have before us: the annual Family Fest, Boys’ Bowl Mass & Breakfast, and Memorial Mass are just a few of the events on the horizon. Boys’ Bowl - Homecoming Weekend

The annual Boys’ Bowl-Homecoming Weekend will be Friday, September 25, 2015 – Sunday, September 27, 2015. As always, we invite all alumni and extended members of the CC Family to come home and take part in the many activities and celebrations of the weekend. We all remember our past Boys’ Bowl experiences. Now it is time to continue the tradition and continue to make Boys’ Bowl Weekend as memorable as it can be.

All those who attend Mass are welcome to a complimentary breakfast sponsored by the Alumni Association. Furthermore, the 9th Annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place with a special ceremony during Mass.

On Friday morning, September 25th, the annual Shamrock Shuffle and Boys’ Bowl Assembly will take place at CC. The students pledge money and run in the Shamrock Shuffle to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. After that, around 9:30 am, the largest spirit assembly in the state will take place in the gym. There we will prepare our student body for the upcoming football game against Central Division rival, Brother Rice. Alumni are invited to attend if they wish.

Friday, September 25, 2015 Shamrock Shuffle – 8:15 am

Friday evening and Saturday will consist of “Shamstock” for our students and golf outings, happy hours, and receptions for many of our alumni celebrating reunions. On Sunday, the annual Gerry Di Ponio ’65 Memorial Boys’ Bowl Mass & Breakfast will take place in the gym at 10:00 am. CC President, Fr. John Huber, C.S.B., will be celebrating Mass for any members of the CC Family who would like to attend.

Shamrock Athletics 35th Annual Athletic Department Golf Outing On June 15, 2015, the Athletic Department hosted its 35th Annual Golf Outing at Walnut Creek Country Club in South Lyon. Athletic Director Aaron Babicz ’93 and Nancy Johnson oversaw the very successful outing. This golf outing is the one major fundraiser specifically for the Athletic Department. The funds help budget the 14 sports programs that we have at CC. The success of our studentathletes would not be possible without the generous support of our athletic patrons. Thank you to all who support Shamrock athletics. The champions for the fourth year in a row were Ed Babicz, Mark Cifaldi, Rick Bessega, Paul Clarkson, and Brian Dawson. Congratulations to this year’s champions! Also, Stan Wilkins ’42 was honored for his loyal support as a golfer at each of the 35 outings over the years.

BRING US UP TO DATE... Our lead article in this issue features the several classes that over the years have stood out in their enthusiasm and participation in the eyes of previous Alumni Directors. Among those is the class of 1965, the class that this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary of graduation. We thought they would be a good class to begin the practice of having the current 50th anniversary class contribute biographies to let us know what they have been doing in the half century since they left CC. We thank those 12% of the ‘65 class who responded and hope that their response will inspire as many members of the next class to respond next year. – Ed.

My most unforgettable Catholic Central memory has nothing to do with me or my classmates. I was five years out of CC, attending my brother Mike’s graduation. One of our Basilian Fathers was calling out names and, one by one, the young men in their rented tuxedos were ascending the stage to collect their diplomas. One was Todd Nadeau. In an accident the summer before his senior year, Todd had his right hand severed. He underwent twenty-three surgeries to have it reattached. He spent entire days on operating tables. He was expected to miss a lot of school. No one – except maybe Todd – thought he’d be able to play his beloved basketball. But there he was, striding onto the stage with his fellow ’80 grads. Not only had he earned his diploma, he had lettered in basketball. When the priest announced “Todd Nadeau,” his classmates leapt to their feet in an explosive standing ovation. I’d never heard of the guy. But it moved me to tears, and does again now as I write this, thirty-three years later. Since its founding in 1928, Catholic Central’s motto has been “Teach Me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.” The young men at the 1980 Commencement had learned the discipline to attain the knowledge that earned them a proud walk onto that stage. Their spontaneous tribute to their classmate showed that they had absorbed the most important teaching of all – God’s goodness. Bryan Gruley ’75 Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author

INTRODUCTION In the winter of 2012, the Catholic Central High School - Board of Directors began asking the questions, “What’s next for CC? What are our needs? What are our priorities?” The answers to those questions came by the fall of 2013 when Catholic Central High School introduced Teach Us to Be Men – The Campaign for CC Students. In the scope of the needs and priorities it seeks to fulfill, Teach Us to Be Men is the most comprehensive campaign the school has ever initiated. What follows is the story of Teach Us to Be Men, which concludes with an invitation to the entire CC community to partner with us to embrace our vision for the future.

THE PLANNING From in-depth analysis and critical questions ... •

In the fall of 2012, the leadership of Catholic Central High School determined that financial resources were required to address the school’s emerging capital priorities. A feasibility study was conducted to determine the extent to which the CC family would support a major funding initiative.

•

Numerous focus groups were conducted with faculty, staff, students, alumni, administrative leaders, and Basilian Fathers. An online survey designed to broaden the base of input was also implemented. The results were overwhelmingly positive and produced clear consensus regarding CC’s vision and the capital priorities required to achieve this vision in fulfillment of its important mission.

•

Results were presented to the CC Board of Directors in June 2013 when a capital campaign was approved, with the focus on CC students and with the theme “Mary Alma Mater: Teach Us to Be Men.”

THE RESPONSE ... come insights and opportunities Based on the input and feedback received during the preparation process, the following emerged as consensus conclusions: •

No young man should be denied a CC education based on his financial circumstances.

•

CC must strengthen its balance sheet by increasing its endowment and decreasing its long-term liabilities.

•

CC must ensure that it attracts, retains, and continually develops the very best teaching talent available.

•

CC must become a leader in education by integrating solid, emerging technological advances.

•

CC must continue to ensure a safe campus traffic environment.

CATHOLIC CENTRAL

A Welcoming Place For All Faiths

by Fr. Bill Riegel, C.S.B. Fr. Bill Riegel, C.S.B. is new to CC this year and has quickly grown to love the school and the Basilian House. Here he expresses and explains a view he found here that CC has long had toward people and students from all religions. - Ed.

As one enters Catholic Central,

you will find these words: “Jesus Christ: the Reason for Catholic Central.” Since its founding in 1928 by the Basilian Fathers, our CC community is grounded in and celebrates its Catholic identity. But it might come as a surprise to many that CC also counts among its own, students from other Christian traditions, as well as Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus. Many of these students come here knowing that we, like Christ, have open arms for all who choose to join us. This is indeed a remarkable aspect of our school life but certainly not unknown to Church teaching on the dignity of every person made in God’s image. This was made very clear in the landmark document “Nostra Aetate” issued by Vatican II (Declaration on the Relation of the Church to Non-Christian Religions) and proclaimed by Pope Paul VI on October 28, 1965. It is startling in its proclamation that “One is the community of all peoples, one their origin, for God made the whole human race to live over the face of the earth. One also is their final goal, God. His providence, His manifestation of goodness, His saving design extends to all…” In reference to Muslims, the Council declares that “the Church regards with esteem also the Muslims. They adore the one God, living and subsisting in Himself, merciful and all-powerful… although they do not acknowledge Jesus as God, they revere Him as a prophet…and they also honor Mary, His virgin Mother, at times they even call on her with devotion.

This sacred synod urges all…to work sincerely for mutual understanding and to preserve as well as to promote together for the benefit of all social justice and moral welfare, as well as peace and freedom.” We know that the Church is born from the Jews, those first peoples of the covenant. As St. Paul reminds us in his Letter to the Hebrews: “Theirs is the sonship and the glory of the covenants and the law and the worship and the promises; theirs are the fathers and from them is the Christ according to the flesh” (Rom. 9:4-5). Again, the Council exhorts us: “Since the spiritual patrimony common to Christians and Jews is so great, this sacred synod wants to foster and recommend that mutual understanding and respect which is the fruit, above all, of biblical and theological studies as well as of fraternal dialogues.” Nostra Aetate also notes the contribution of other non-christian traditions as it boldly states: “The Catholic rejects nothing that is true and holy in these religions. She regards with sincere reverence those ways of conduct and of life, those precepts and teachings which, though differing in many aspects from the ones She holds and sets forth, nonetheless often reflect a ray of that Truth which enlightens all men.” Finally, we see in the Petrine Ministry of those recent popes an opening of dialogue with all people of good will. They truly manifest the spirit of this document. It is no wonder then, that Catholic Central has been so welcoming to all who walk our halls. Strong in our Catholic faith, we are proud to walk with all our “brothers.”

ACADEMIC TEAM WINS PACE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP T

he Detroit Catholic Central Academic Team is once again National Champions! On June 6-7, in Reston, Virginia, the Shamrocks competed at the annual PACE National Scholastic Championship tournament in a field of 96 teams.

CC finished the tournament with an 18-1 record and defeated 2014 national champion, Liberal Arts and Science Academy (Austin, TX) in the finals. Jack Watts ’15 was named to the tournament All-Star team.

CC won its fifth-consecutive NAQT Michigan State Championship and finished with four of the Top 5 teams in the state. The B Team finished 2nd, the C Team finished 4th, and the D Team finished 5th.

CC won the NAQT National Championship in 1999 and 2001, but this is the first time a school from the state of Michigan has won the PACE National Scholastic Championship. The NAQT tournament features questions on popular culture, while the PACE tournament features comparably longer questions focusing completely on academic subject matter.

Austin Foos ’15 was named the National High School Quiz Bowl Player of the Year by the National History Bee & Bowl, which sponsors the yearly National Quiz Bowl Awards.

Catholic Central finished the season with a school record 218 wins. The Shamrocks also had three teams ranked in the Top 50 in the country. CC finished tied for 22nd at this year’s ACF Nationals, one of two national championship tournaments for colleges. The Shamrocks also finished 9th at the National History Bowl and 3rd at the NAQT National Championship Tournament in Chicago.

S C H O O L B E L L S • FA L L 2 0 1 5

Additionally, Austin and Jack were named to the All-World Team by High School Quiz Bowl Rankings. Conner Reynolds ’16 was named to the second All-World Team, and Ean Maloney ’16 and Alex LaForest ’16 were named to the Honorable Mention All-World Team. Congratulations to the students and coaches who dedicated themselves to the rigors of an Academic Team season. The team was led by co-head coaches Ben Herman ’98 and Christopher Gismondi ’00 and assistant coach Anthony Cornish.

Mr. Howard Weinberg, the founding coach of the CC Quiz Bowl Team, sent a letter of praise explaining the significance of the team’s first place PACE win this year.

Dear Fr. Paramo, NAQT and PACE are not identical. However, they are primarily divided by distinctions without a difference. I assure you that this is a legitimate national title and one that my teams never duplicated. To give you an idea, the teams which finished second and third at NAQT finished second and first at PACE. My teams did well at PACE with a second and three semi-finalist finishes. In general, however, my players found PACE with its slightly greater emphasis on science to be more difficult than NAQT with its slight tilt to history and literature. In any event, every team needs long term objectives. I would suggest that the only thing not yet accomplished by any CC team would be winning both NAQT and PACE in the same year. Indeed, this 2015 team came very close to doing it. Howard S C H O O L B E L L S • FA L L 2 0 1 5

CC Hosts Rosary Rally For Fellow Catholic High School Football Teams On Sunday, August 23, about 350 football players from seven area Catholic high schools began their season together by praying a common rosary in a spirit of brotherhood and Christian fellowship. Athletes (and parents) from Bishop Foley, Brother Rice, Catholic Central,

DeLaSalle, Everest Collegiate, Father Gabriel Richard, and St. Mary’s Preparatory were in attendance. This spiritual moment was a reminder to all that although we may be rivals on the fields, we are friends and Christian brothers every day.
