2008 – CONOR PARKS is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in chemical engineering at Purdue University. 2009 – TIM DEZELSKI earned third-team All-American honors from Daktronics. He was one of just 15 players across all NCAA Division II institutions, and one of two players from the GLIAC Conference, to be named All-American by the association. Tim also earned firstteam All-GLIAC and first-team All-Region honors for his play this past season on the Hillsdale College Basketball Team. He was the only player in the country, and the only player in the 100-plus year school history, to amass 600 or more points, 250 or more rebounds, and more than 100 assists in the same season. Tim certainly played a major part in the team finishing with a 18-9 record this past season. One of Tim’s teammates at Hillsdale is Kyle Cooper ’12. 2009 – BRYAN RAYCRAFT graduated Cum Laude from Hillsdale College in May 2013 with a BA degree in International Business with Foreign Studies in Spanish. He played club rugby, soccer, and two years of varsity football for the Chargers. In August 2013 Bryan moved to Lima, Peru to teach English and pursue his love of travel in South America. He will be spending the month of April as a volunteer in a rural Peruvian Andes community supporting agricultural development to help families in extreme poverty increase their income.
THE CONNECTED ’10s 2010 & 2012 – MATT and ANDREW THOMPSON are currently enrolled at the United States Military Academy at West Point in New York.

Catholic Central FBI Agents On October 26, 2013, three CC Alumni who became FBI Special Agents caught up with each other in Troy, Michigan, just prior to the Class of 1968’s 45th Reunion. Both Mike Gearty ’65 and Al Malinchak ’68 are retired from the FBI, and Shaun Kahanec ’98 is an active duty FBI Special Agent in Detroit, Michigan. Note: Over the years, the Special Agent training has grown from 16 weeks with Mike, 18 weeks with Al and in the last five years to 22 weeks with Shaun.
Mike Gearty ’65 Mike followed a boyhood dream to become a Special Agent with the FBI. Mike retired from the Bureau after 28 years of service (1971-1999). After being accepted, Mike completed 16 weeks of training at Quantico, Virginia, and was assigned to his first office in Springfield, Illinois. He spent one year there and was then assigned to the Minneapolis office where he worked nine years, concentrating on Violent Crimes, e.g. bank robberies, kidnappings, and extortion. During this time he trained for the FBI Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team. This prepared him for his next assignment, as he was transferred to Detroit to supervise the Violent Crime Task Force there. Mike was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent in Detroit, with a task force consisting of the Detroit Police Department, the Michigan State Police, and other agencies. The task force was charged with confronting the most dangerous individuals in the Detroit area. He supervised this Task force until his retirement from the Bureau in 1999. After retirement, Mike worked 10 years in Corporate Security, retiring in 2010 as Supervisor of Security Investigations at DTE Energy.
Al Malinchak ’68 Al was a tenured college professor when he was approached to join the FBI (1984-2004) as a Special Agent. After 18 weeks of training at the FBI Academy he was assigned to the Alexandria Office/Manassas Resident Agency where his investigations included skyjackings, kidnappings, fugitives, rapes and specialized in no-body homicides.
Other assignments included being an Instructor at the FBI National Academy; Administrator of the FBI’s National Executive Institute; Supervisory Special Agent of Criminal Squads focused on Organized Crime, Narcotics and White Collar Crime in Rochester, NY; Assistant Inspector; On-Scene Crisis Commander for the 2002 Winter Olympics; Chief of Investigative Training then Acting Senior Executive of New Agents Training, National and International Law Enforcement Programs, and Facilities and Security back at the FBI Academy; and, lastly as the Chief of the FBI’s Leadership Development Institute. After his FBI retirement, Al was the Chief Learning Officer at ManTech International (2004-2011), Chief Learning Officer at Homeland Security Solutions, Inc. (2011-2013) and is currently Executive Advisor of Deltek’s Talent and Learning Practice and CEO of both Éclat Transitions LLC and STRATactical LLC
Shaun Kahanec ’98 Shaun joined the FBI in 2008 after spending six years as a Financial Advisor. His father recently retired from the Plymouth Police Department after 36 years of service, which laid the foundation for Shaun’s desire to join the Bureau. Dave Nemes ’98 introduced Shaun to retired Special Agent Al Malinchak ’68, who mentored Shaun through the rigorous FBI selection process. After being accepted into the FBI, Shaun completed 22 weeks training at Quantico, Virginia, and was assigned to his first office in New Haven, Connecticut. He spent four and half years there, concentrating on white collar crimes, e.g. securities fraud, bank fraud, corporate fraud and embezzlement. In 2013, Shaun transferred to the Detroit Field Office where he currently works as a Special Agent on the Joint Terrorism Task Force. The task force is charged with bringing together representatives of local, state, and federal agencies to run down any and all terrorism leads, develop and investigate cases, provide support for special events, and proactively identify threats that may impact the area and the nation.

DRIVE
Theme for 2014: “The Olympics”
The Drive Results The annual Student Ticket DRIVE is an annual event that is synonymous with school spirit at Catholic Central. Each year, students sell raffle tickets and collect money for tuition assistance. The seven school days that make up “DRIVE week” are comprised of half days and assemblies that promote school spirit and competition amongst the students, faculty and staff. The theme for this year was “Olympics.” Each homeroom selected a country to represent and decorated their homerooms and hallways accordingly. The freshmen represented Africa (including Italy for Mr. Magni), the sophomores represented Asia, the juniors represented the Americas, and seniors represented Europe. The decorations were outstanding. The creativity of our students was obvious. The videos, entertainment, and various shenanigans that fill the week were most enjoyable. This year’s DRIVE was another huge success! The total amount of money brought in reached $442,230.13! That money will go directly toward tuition assistance for next year’s students. Fr. Huber, C.S.B. made it clear to the students that many families will be able to receive much-needed financial support toward tuition because of their efforts. It was also pointed out that this year’s total amounted to the largest sum of tuition assistance dollars ever available in the history of CC. For their efforts, Fr. Huber, C.S.B. and Fr. Thompson, C.S.B. rewarded the students with 11 DRIVE holidays.

Career Guidance Talks Each year, the Career Guidance Committee of the Alumni Association, in collaboration with Ms. Shawn Mather and the CC Guidance Department, arranges for many alumni to come and speak with interested sophomores about different career paths and opportunities for them to pursue after their time at Catholic Central. These career fields range from Entrepreneurship and Law to Medicine and Engineering. The first of these career talks was on January 22, 2014. Denny Barnes ’79 and Chuck Bullock ’87 spoke to the students about a career in law. Denny primarily deals with business and commercial litigation, and Chuck, father of David ’16, handles bankruptcy matters. Both Denny and Chuck stressed to the students that a well-rounded education is important and must be taken seriously, not only when they move on to college, but during their years at CC as well. They covered many different areas of the legal profession and some of the opportunities available to them because of their CC affiliation. The second career talk was on February 5, 2014. Bob Paul ’80, father of Brendan ’15 and CEO of Compuware, spoke to the students about the relevance and importance of Information Technology (IT) in today’s world. He explained how most familiar businesses incorporate IT in their strategies for success. He also gave the students some educational suggestions for their college plans and future career choices. The third career talk was on February 12, 2014. Mike Dewan ’85, father of Ryan ’13 and Brendan ’17, spoke to the students about business and entrepreneurship. Scott Hauncher ’89, Alumni Board member and father of Andrew ’17, spoke to the students about a career in finance. The fourth career talk was on March 25, 2014. Dr. Bob Forte ’69 and Dr. Steve Antone ’93 spoke to the students about a career in medicine. Dr. Forte is a member of both the Alumni Association Board and School Board of Directors and is an accomplished surgeon. Dr. Antone is a pediatrician. They spoke about their educational backgrounds through CC, undergraduate studies and Med school. The last career talk was on April 9, 2014. Kevin Mason ’03 is a mechanical engineer for Altair Engineering. He spoke to the students about the many different fields of engineering and how engineering is used in so many ways in our world. He demonstrated computer programs that he uses in his own job and encouraged the students to sharpen their math and science skills. Kevin is also an assistant cross country coach at CC. The Career Guidance Committee is led by Jeff McGowan ’84 and committee members, John Argenta ’58, Bob Rosowski ’58, and Denny Barnes ’79.
