A Message from the
President
Dear Alumni of Detroit Catholic Central and CC friends, It is indeed a great privilege to begin serving the Catholic Central High School community as its fourth president. Upon arriving at Catholic Central to serve as principal in the summer of 2010, it didn’t take me long to discover what a very special and blessed school we have. I discovered thousands of wonderful families and students, all eager to be faithful to the mission and culture of what has become the largest Catholic school in Michigan. When a fourteen-year-old freshman enters our doors, I wonder if he realizes all of the hard work, dedication, sweat, blood, tears, and above all, love, that has been contributed by so many into our school: the love of our Basilian founders, the love of hundreds of Basilians who have dedicated themselves to CC over the decades, the love of dedicated teachers and staff, along with the love of so many wonderful families. While in California I was able to obtain a doctorate in Catholic Educational Leadership from the University of San Francisco. The title of my dissertation is: The Accessibility of American Catholic Secondary Schools to the Various Socioeconomic Levels of Catholic Families in the 21st Century. As you know, the cost of attending Catholic Central has grown significantly over the years, resulting in a tuition that far too many families find out of reach. We need to remain faithful to the Basilian and Catholic philosophies of education, as well as to the historical philosophy of Catholic Central, that we will do all that we can to make CC as accessible as possible to as many families as possible in spite of the heavy challenges that we face. So many of our alumni understand this so well, remembering the sacrifices of their own families to send them to CC. Fifty years ago, our greatest asset was the dozens of Basilians who staffed the school and worked for next to nothing. Today, Basilians remain present, but in significantly reduced numbers. Perhaps now our greatest assets are all our teachers, who make significant sacrifices to be able to minister at CC, and the thousands of alumni who are successful in the world, in part thanks to their Catholic education. Our alumni make the world a better place because of their dedication to their professions, their families, the Church, and to their alma mater. Such dedication helps CC welcome as many families as possible despite financial challenges. For two weeks in July, elected delegates from the entire Congregation of Saint Basil gathered at St. John Fisher College to participate in the Basilian Fathers Chapter, which occurs every four years. Part of the activity of the Chapter included electing a Superior General and a General Council. Father George Smith, C.S.B. was re-elected Superior General, and a CC grad, Fr. David Katulski, C.S.B. ’63 was re-elected Vicar General. I was elected “third councilor,” thus in addition to serving the CC community as President, I will also be serving part-time on our Basilian General Council. Catholic Central has provided many fine men to the Basilian community over the years. I invite our current alumni who are not already committed to the sacrament of marriage to consider a Basilian vocation. Any of the Basilians here at CC would be happy to chat with you about it! You will find in this edition of the Aluminator a section dedicated to many of the fine lay men and women who have served over the years as teachers. Their dedication to the Mission of Basilian Catholic Education at CC continues to inspire us. Recognizing that all of us have a sacred vocation for which we were created, let us continue to ask for God’s grace to be faithful to our vocations as husbands, fathers, priests, businessmen, educators and in other professions. By praying for one another, we’re realizing what many of our current young Men of CC often say, “The brothers at CC have your back!” Gratefully,
Fr. John B. Huber, C.S.B., Ed.D. President

NOSTRA maxima culpa te agimusque gratias (Our great fault and we thank you.)
A Ghost Story With a Happy Ending There is a great plot afoot to undermine the accuracy of the Aluminator. In the last issue, in an article on the history of three Basilian schools, a timeline ranging from 1852 to the present, a specific mention of Catholic Central at its Belmont location was omitted, even though the dates 1934 to 1951 were duly covered. A total of 119 words were used to describe this transitional era, but because the name of the street was not mentioned, it was taken to be an omission. Throughout the school there are several places where there are on display an iconic set of four sketches showing the four buildings that CC inhabited before Wixom Road. Belmont is one of those. Still, specific mention of the name was omitted. It is the result of a pernicious plot whose cause is unknown. It may simply be the result of the second law of thermodynamics, otherwise known as original sin. However, some believe it was caused by an infiltration of extraterrestrials bent on subverting society prior to their taking it over. Others are convinced that a magician called ‘the Shadow’ with a wave of his hand clouded the minds of an army of proofreaders, causing them not to see the omission. Perhaps a cabal of liberalconservative trouble-makers are trying to stunt perfection in the manner sometimes ascribed to Congress. In any case, we are sorry that the omission happened. Since the article was a general summary, there was no attempt to present a complete history. For example, a Basilian father reading the section on Basilian history may find omissions. That is why we used two QR codes and the website to extend that material beyond the printed version. For the history of CC, that was unnecessary because we have covered it many times before. In fact, because the item was intended to be cursory, there are no doubt other details missing in the 160 years covered. If so, we apologize in advance for that, too. The present omission of a single name was present in our sources and was not noticed when they were published or 6
caught now by any of our otherwise very competent proofreaders. The article on CC was copied directly from the Detroit Catholic Central Legacy booklet. This may have to be revised. Though we don’t usually include letters to the editor, the contributions of those that noticed the omission were very interesting. They are included below to remind us, not only never to repeat this particular omission in the future, but also because they are the type of response we constantly solicit from you for our Chatterbox section. If such informative contributions came in because of a one-word omission, perhaps we can do it again on purpose to get more such interesting responses. Also included below are the comments of some of those that had a favorable reaction to the rest of the Aluminator issue. FROM BOB BOYKE ’57 Hey Mike et al: What the hail is this? I just got the spring 2014 Aluminator which gave a history of CC’s locations without one mention of CC location behind the cathedral on Belmont. Our era guys as incoming freshmen and early arrivers or late stayers watched almost the entire faculty show up in the “orange crate,” later to be repainted and called the “blue goose” [a school bus]. I am almost sure they were commuting from dorms or residences near the Belmont campus. As a late stayer for freshman football practice I also remember that two scholastics always stayed in the new Outer Drive campus as watchmen. [Father Richard Elmer, C.S.B. was one of these scholastics.] They slept on cots or beds on the second floor teachers’ lounge room. How can this serious omission be? I remember, after one football game with Hamtramck, the driver even cut past the old Belmont campus, then called Cathedral

Central, and a cheer went up on the bus as we passed the front of the Belmont building, because it still had the portal stone over the main door with the stone engraved “Catholic Central High School.” I demand [?] the Aluminator editor admit this very serious discrepancy and omission! FROM DICK HARPER ‘44 I was somewhat surprised and disappointed to learn that my years at a school on Belmont Avenue are no longer considered part of the history of Catholic Central. The article on CCH history in the current issue of the Aluminator casually skips from Harper Avenue to Outer Drive with nary a mention [119 words] of Belmont. Perhaps that was all a mirage with respect to my high school days. My memory does fail me on occasion. - Dick Harper CCH ‘44 (I thought) FROM DAN DILWORTH ‘50 Mike , I noticed in the Spring 2014 edition of the Aluminator that there is no mention in the article profiling Catholic Central that the school also occupied a facility on Belmont after Harper Ave and before Outer Drive. Also a little historical information regarding Mr. George Strake, a major school donor, mentioned in the profile on St. Thomas High School. My cousin, Robert Dilworth, who graduated around 1937 and was on the first golf team, married Mr. Strake’s daughter. Bob was a decorated Navy pilot and the personal pilot of Henry Kaiser when he met Susan Strake on a trip to Houston when Messrs. Strake and Kaiser had a meeting. Needless to say, Bob did not remain a pilot much longer, given the Strakes’ many business interests. - Dan Dilworth Belmont Class of 1950
FROM JIM HEALY ’44 Dear Father Paramo, I always enjoy reading the fine Aluminator, with special interest in learning about OLD classmates of the class of 1944. Alas, in reading the interesting account of CCH locations, I discovered we apparently didn’t exist! What was I doing between 1940 and 1944 on Belmont Avenue, next to the Cathedral? Didn’t we reverently attend Mass there every morning? Did we all evaporate into nothingness as we rushed into military service within days of graduation? Were favored teachers like Fathers Embser, Clemens, French, and Riley figments of an old-timer’s imagination? Did unforgettable classmates like Edward Burgess’44, Thomas Cotter’44, Raymond Coyle’44, Gerald Duggan’44, James Edwards’44, Stephen Gorman’44, Lawrence or Richard MacDonald’44, Robert McGlinchey’44, James Mitchell’44, James O’Halloran’44, William Scruggs’44, and Thomas Reid’44 really exist? Whatever is real, I do know that the spirit of the CCH motto inspired me to strive diligently in the fields of journalism and law, and a 32-year career in the FBI, where facts and accuracy were high priorities. (I enjoyed the article about FBI colleagues, and their training classes. I received eight weeks [of it] in 1951. We were either halfbaked or fast learners from CCH education). Just thought you should know that some of us Boston Boulevard-era [another street name not included in the article] students are still around, with real or fancied memories of “the good old days.” Keep up your outstanding publication. With kindest regards, Jim Healy ’44
boys from Belmont in sports, scholarship, theater and fundraising (“Sell those tickets at the Boys’ Town game and you will be graduating from the new school!”) there may not have been a need to expand to the ‘famous’ Outer Drive address. Sadly, there is not a Detroit left to support an all-boys central Catholic high school. FROM PAT BARRY ‘67 Hi Father Paramo, Thank you, once again, for an outstanding issue of the Aluminator. I look forward to every issue. I learn so much and it keeps me connected with the best high school ever. I particularly enjoyed reading about the histories of the founding of the order and the three high schools. I spent several days with the band at St. Michael’s School in Toronto back in the late 1960s. It was a great experience and was the first time I ever traveled out of the United States. It was very memorable. As someone who edited a sailing publication for several years, I truly appreciate all that goes into the publication. Thank you, again. - Pat Barry ‘67 FROM FRED LAUCK ‘61 Father, … It was good reading that piece about you, your Houston roots and your dedication words for the Dillon Award Wall [on the website referred to by the QR code]. I love the biblical references to ‘’Goodness Discipline and Knowledge.’’ Be well.
FROM LEON R. DENNING ‘48
Below is an excerpt from the offending passage in page 26 of the last Aluminator. The part in bold face between the brackets is the considerable coverage of the unfortunately unnamed Belmont era. History: In May, 1928, Monsignor Van Antwerp, Vicar-General of the Diocese of Detroit and pastor of Holy Rosary Church decided to convert his parochial high school on Harper Avenue near Woodward into a boys’ high school. He asked the Basilian Fathers to assume management and to staff it. In early September 1928, the first bell sounded for 260 students. Rev. Daniel L. Dillon, C.S.B., its first principal, was a native of Texas and had been the fourth principal of St. Thomas in Houston. [Here begins the Belmont era.] In 1934 the school took the name “Catholic Central High School.” By 1937, growing enrollment became so great that the facility had to be altered. In desperation, that section of the building which had been erected as a gymnasium three years before was converted into seven additional classrooms. Enrollment continued to grow over the next three years until the building was again crowded. Its programs also expanded, and it became evident that a new site for Catholic Central had to be found. The Administration looked to northwest Detroit since a great number of students came from that area. On October 1, 1943, a 17 acre tract of land on the corner of Hubbell and West Outer Drive was purchased. Catholic Central High School opened on September 17, 1951, at the famous 6565 West Outer Drive address with the first phase of its building plans completed. The new facility housed more than 800 students. Within ten years, Fr. Wilfrid M. Kehoe, the Principal in 1961, was able to complete the facility as it had been planned. There Catholic Central remained until 1978.
Editor, I cannot believe that a history (although brief) of Catholic Central High School could be presented without a mention of Belmont. If it were not for the fantastic successes of the

Alumni Reminisce on School Days Gone By
CC LIFE REMEMBERED We have often thought of featuring stories of CC life from the past. Our Chatterbox section covers the recent activities of alumni, but we thought reminiscences of the past would be of interest to alumni who shared the experiences. The recent reactions to the omission of the name ‘Belmont’ in our last issue appear on pages 6-7. These reactions included the kind of stories we wanted to present. We left them on that page, but here are three others which may be of interest. Once you get the idea and like it, perhaps you will send us similar stories for a future issue. – Ed.
CC BOXING EVENTS Joe Krajewski ’48 spoke with Rudy Seichter ’59 a few months back and reminisced about his days at CC… The Ernie Harwell of the 40s and early 50s was Ty Tyson. According to Joe, some CC boxing events were on early TV with commentary by Ty Tyson who often said, “he who fights today lives to fight another day.” Hal Shields was the football coach at the time, and Joe remembers that Hal became a convert to Catholicism. Also, the team travelled to Flint, Saginaw, Toledo, etc., and they picked up steak sandwiches for the road trips from the famous Carl’s Chop House on Grand River. But for local games in the Detroit area, the players had to find their own transportation to the games. Joe remembers CC playing River Rouge and he didn’t know where it was. He finally took three buses to get there and, fortunately, enough CC players made it to field a team.
WHITEWATER RAFTING During the late 70s, the Lumen Club (the CC science club) sponsored rafting trips down the Youghiogheny River in Pennsylvania. Several carloads of students and teachers went down the whitewater rapids. One year the water level was particularly high, making the rapids stronger than usual. Each rubber raft had five or six people in it. Suddenly the raft hit a violent
8
C C M emories • F A L L 2 0 1 4
bump called a hydraulic which bounced Mr. Bob Scheuermanm completely over everyone’s heads and into the water. He managed to grab the rope attached around the raft just as the raft was violently jammed between two boulders. The current was so strong that as he held on to the rope his body was completely horizontal under the raft. Without anyone having to say anything, everyone knew that if he lost his hold he would be pulled under the raft, and if the space between the boulders wasn’t wide enough, he would be trapped under water and drown before the raft would be freed. Immediately everyone started pulling him in while holding on to each other so that someone else wouldn’t end up in the water. They managed to exert the force needed gradually to drag him into the raft. After a while they managed to pry the raft from between the boulders. Mr. Scheuermann lived to teach 30 more years at CC and retire.
A TRIBUTE Mng Sci was a religion course taught by Fr. Raymond Paramo, C.S.B., principally to science students. On the very last day of class, Fr. Paramo was ending with an article by John Steinbeck which summarized eloquently the place of the students in all that the course had covered. Up to then it had been an emotionally charged class because of the conclusions that had been reached. Sean Pfister ’74, who sadly died of cancer on June 12, was sitting toward the front of the lab. Sensitive Irishman that he was, it became clear to him that Fr. Paramo would not be able to finish reading the article without being emotionally overcome. Without being told, he quietly went to the front of the room and gently took the article from Fr. Paramo and continued reading it in a clear voice without breaking the rhythm. When he finished there wasn’t a dry eye in the room, and the applause that followed may have been for Fr. Paramo and his course, but it was certainly also for Sean’s sensitivity and quick thinking. The event was a clear indication of the good man he would become.

ALUMNI BUSINESS PROFILE: Which Wich Superior Sandwiches By Shaun Sova ’09, Associate Director of Advancement
On Tuesday, July 15th, I sat down for a phone conversation with Jeff Sinelli ’86, Founder, CEO, and “Chief Vibe Officer” of Which Wich Superior Sandwiches. Which Wich Superior Sandwiches, an award-winning, national sandwich concept, offers many varieties of customizable “wiches.” They are known for their creative ordering system where guests use red Sharpies® to mark pre-printed menus on sandwich bags. The sandwiches are prepared to the guests’ exact specifications, toasted to perfection, and delivered in the personalized bag. After they’ve finished eating, guests are encouraged to draw on their bag and hang their “artwork” on the community wall. The beginning of Which Wich goes all the way back to Jeff’s days at CC. “My favorite time of day was lunchtime,” Jeff says. “My mother would write my name on my lunch bag as well as what sandwich was inside. This is where I got the idea for our ordering Jeff Sinelli ’86 system at Which Wich. My mother would always give me two sandwiches, I would eat one and I use the other as a bartering tool around the lunch room.” Jeff has many fond memories of Catholic Central. When asked what he remembers the most, he said, “Who could forget Fr. Donoher using red licorice like it was a carrot-on-a-stick for us in class? I will also never forget a 182-line poem by Francis Thompson called “The Hound of Heaven” that Fr. Clemens taught us. That poem has stuck with me my entire life.” While at CC, Jeff left football to take up lacrosse and found he had a real talent for it. He even went on to play for the Detroit Turbos from 1990-1992. After earning a Bachelor’s Degree from Michigan State and an MBA from City University in Seattle, Jeff moved to Dallas where he began developing several independent restaurants and nightclubs before focusing on building multiunit concepts. In 1998, he created Genghis Grill, a Mongolian barbecue restaurant, which he sold 10

in 2003 to begin work on creating Which Wich. Upon creating Which Wich in 2003, Jeff was named a “branding phenom” by QSR magazine. In 2012, Gourmet named him one of The Top 25 American Food Entrepreneurs. Today, Which Wich has grown to 350 locations open or in development in 38 states and four countries. Jeff has been working on Which Wich’s new charitable endeavor, Project PB&J, that donates PB&J sandwiches to people in need every time someone buys a PB&J “Wich.” He also has been looking into opening more franchises in Michigan. He wants to help with the revitalization of Detroit and has hopes of utilizing Detroit products for his sandwiches. Truly, this is only a little taste of the “Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge” he learned at CC. As I hung up the phone with Jeff, I couldn’t help but think how he was another example of a CC Shamrock doing incredible things in the business world. We couldn’t be prouder of his success, and we look forward to Jeff’s “grand return home” through more Which Wich locations in Michigan. In fact, Jeff has a goal of opening a Which Wich next to CC, and my stomach is already growling! If you are interested in becoming a customer, another member of the Vibe Community, or opening a franchise here in Michigan, head on over to www.whichwich.com for more information.

Teach Us To Be Men: The Campaign for CC Students In the fall of 2012, nearly two years ago, the leadership of Catholic Central High School (led by Fr. Gordon Judd, C.S.B. ’58, Chairman of the School Board of Directors; Fr. Jefferson Thompson, C.S.B., President; and Fr. John Huber, C.S.B., Principal) engaged in a strategic planning process that included a feasibility study to determine the extent to which the CC family would support a major funding initiative. In the winter of 2013, extensive planning began that focused on the primary result of our findings: That no young man be denied a CC education based on his financial circumstances.
Dan Collins ‘84 Director of Advancement
Results were presented to the Board of Directors in June 2013, and a capital campaign was approved, with the focus on CC students and given the name: Mary Alma Mater: Teach Us To Be Men with a goal of raising $10 million in cash gifts and pledges by December 31, 2014. A Campaign leadership group was formed, led by Bob Paul ’80 and Kathy Paul, and the Campaign was “kicked-off” in September 2013. The spirit and substance of this Campaign are found in its embrace of Catholic Central’s potential to excel beyond its aspirations and accomplishments of the past 86 years, to distinguish it from other secondary schools by its mission, vision and character that set it apart, and to perform academically on a level that will compete with the very best secondary schools in the country and to do all that we can to make such an experience as accessible to as many families as possible. Our previous Campaign focused on the construction of our outstanding facility. This Campaign is focused on our outstanding students. Funding Priorities 1. Students • ENDOWMENT for tuition assistance – accessibility and affordability of a CC education 2. Academic Excellence • ENDOWMENT to support faculty attraction, retention and professional development • Progress in technology 3. Campus Safety • Fulfill the need for additional student parking 4. Long-Term Financial Stability • ENDOWMENT for operation support and financial security • Balance sheet enhancement

Our message: your partnership will help shape our future, always true to our mission, vision, and values. Gratefully, many have answered that call and asked to embrace this vision. We are thrilled to report that we are nearly two thirds of the way to our $10 million goal in committed and pending gifts. Today, our Campaign journey continues and in time, all will be called. We simply ask you to answer that call and consider joining your CC family in embracing our vision to ensure the future of Mary Alma Mater.
A Message from the Director of Planned Giving
DETROIT CATHOLIC CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL
Dear Alumni, Building an endowment is one of the critical tasks for any private educational institution, and Detroit Catholic Central is no exception to that rule. The escalating costs to construct, enhance, and maintain the physical plant is but one aspect of the financial challenge. Equally important is the ability to continue to attract and retain the very best to join the dedicated faculty which we have always been blessed to have at CC. The third factor is the purpose of CC, i.e. to provide the setting for young men who possess the intellectual desire, drive, and work ethic to succeed in the highly competitive but nurturing environment of Catholic Central. For 86 years, Catholic Central has been blessed in its ability to make good on its promise to deliver the Basilian mission of teaching Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge to nearly 20,000 young men in order that they could become productive members of our Church, country, and society. Each one of us is the product of this remarkable institution of learning, and the current student body continues to build on that tradition of excellence. The students’ academic, athletic, fine arts, and extra-curricular activities have consistently exceeded expectations, outperformed other private schools, and made all of us proud. So what has this to do with Planned Giving? I submit that each one of us needs to think hard about his responsibility, as an alumnus, to provide the same opportunity he had to today’s young men who seek this opportunity of attending CC. May I suggest you ask yourself two questions. First, do you believe that CC helped to provide a solid foundation to your development as a young adult? Second, can you think of a better organization in which to invest a portion of your hard earned savings for the future development of qualified young men? If you answered yes to the first question and no to the second question, then I ask that you participate in the future of Catholic Central by including CC, in whatever amount you decide, in your estate plan. Joining the current 75 members of the St. Basil Legacy Society will be one of the most satisfying decisions you will make. There are numerous methods to include CC as a part of your legacy plan. Many of us have chosen vehicles that not only protect our families and support Catholic Central’s future, but also create additional income and reduce current and future taxes. Please contact me at (248) 596-3845 or rseichter@catholiccentral.net for any questions you may have regarding legacy planning. I’ll do my best to assist and/or put you in touch with one of our many alumni who specialize in estate planning. God Bless,
Rudy Seichter ’59 Director of Planned Giving

Team Celebrates 40th Anniversary
Opening with a casual Friday reception in Dearborn Heights on June 20, the Class of 1949 began a two-day, three-event celebration of 65 years since it graduated from Catholic Central. Bill Moylan ’49 and his wife, Andrea, wined and dined their guests with full bar, grilled chops, salmon, and shrimp. To highlight the evening, the Moylans hired artist Ariel Echevarria to draw caricatures of all the guests. The following day, June 21, 16 men and six guests gathered at O’Mara’s Restaurant in Berkley to enjoy a sit-down dinner, try to recall the words of the “Touchdown Song,” and ponder a before-and-after word puzzle based on names of 1949 graduates: (Ante-bellum Georgia femme fatale: Neil Scarlett O’Hara; Rivaled Lana Turner and Jane Russell on Photoplay: Ed Swetter girl). Jack Wagner ’49 correctly filled in all of the blanks of the “Touchdown Song.” Following the reunion dinner, Bill Gagnon, Jr. ’49 hosted an afterglow for class members and their guests at his home a half mile down Coolidge from O’Mara’s. All the men and women at the afterglow raised a toast to the Catholic Central Class of 1949.
On Saturday, May 10, 2014, members of the 1974 State Champion Hockey Team gathered at Traffic Jam and Snug in Detroit to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their triumph over Brother Rice in the finals of the annual Mayor’s Tournament, the equivalent to today’s state championship tournament. The team was coached by Rick Repicky ’68 and Bill Ventola and led by Mike Wendzinski ’74, Mike Brown ’75, and captain and Mayor’s Tournament MVP, Tim Ronayne ’74. TEACHING
It is clear that what CC has become over the years is in large part the result of the vocation of so many competent and dedicated teachers. In the fall 2011 issue of the Aluminator (Vol. 61, No. 1, page 23), we presented the names of the many Basilian Fathers who have worked at CC from the time of its foundation. In recent years the number of Basilians has declined, but they have been replaced by equally dedicated lay men and women whose vocation to teach was lived out at CC. As a regular item, we present new teachers when they join the faculty and also honor those that are retiring each year. For this issue we thought it would be good to have updates from teachers who no longer teach at CC. Whenever a teacher’s biography has been included as part of an article, the response of our readers has been very positive. For example, in our spring 2013 issue, the article on the history of the Quiz Bowl included an update on Mr. Howard Weinberg. Many of his previous
students expressed an appreciation for that article. With this in mind we sent out a general request to former CC teachers for an update of their activities since they left us. Of the approximately 70 names in our database, 20 responded. We are grateful for such a large response and are happy to include these stories below in the order in which they were received. Of those that responded, seven worked at only one location, seven worked at two locations, and six worked at Outer Drive (OD), Breakfast Drive (BD) and Wixom Road (WR). Please notice that there are no responses from former Harper or Belmont teachers. This is not a slight or oversight. It is simply that there are no longer any living former teachers from those years as far as we know. However, if you remember any teachers from those years, or even from more recent years, and you have interesting stories about them, please send the stories to us, and we will publish them as reminiscences of former teachers. - Ed.

GEORGE L. DUFFOURC (OD BD WR) My name is George L. Duffourc, better known to many of you as the “Doof.” I really enjoyed my years teaching at Catholic Central High School. I was fortunate enough to teach at Outer Drive, Breakfast Drive, and Wixom Road. Each school was quite different. I taught for 34 years at Catholic Central with many of the great Basilians. I started in 1976 and was hired by Fr. Franklin Mizzi, C.S.B. My English department chairman was Fr. James Enright, C.S.B. At that time there were many Basilians teaching. I find these names etched in my memory: Donoher, McCarthy, Genca, Ward, Clemens, Ranalletti, Andrews, Daly, Flood, and Gardner. These are just a few of the priests I remember. My years at CC were spent in the English Department. I taught Grammar and Literature at all grade levels. For me, teaching the freshmen provided my most precious memories. I have been retired for a little over four years. I live on Western Golf Course in Redford, Michigan. I enjoy reading, good movies, bowling, bike riding, and most of all, baseball. I still enjoy classic cars and the Detroit Auto Show. All my life, I have enjoyed cooking, and I believe this should be a life skill for every gender. I also spend some time going to garage and estate sales. I took a train trip through the Colorado Rockies to visit my daughter in Utah. I consider this a must-see for all proud Americans. My best advice to future generations is to live a life of hope and faith. Make your daily activities prayers of solemn words and actions. Be true Sons of Central Honor. Try to make every day a better day for all those surrounding you. MIKE RODRIGUEZ (OD BD WR) I taught at CC for 39 years. I taught Health, Physical Education, and Driver’s Training. I was Wrestling Coach from 1968 to 2007, Golf Coach from 1970 to 1974, and a Football Coach in 1968. In 2008 I wanted to give back to my heritage. I started Beat the Streets in southwest Detroit, in Mexican Village. We kept the kids off the street from 3 to 6 PM, three days a week from September until December. I taught both boys and girls ages 8 to 14 how to wrestle. It was an awesome experience for an old man of age 82. I currently reside in Redford, MI, one block from Breakfast Drive. My wife, June, and I have 15 grandchildren. We both watch a great deal of football, baseball, soccer, wrestling, gymnastics, and elementary plays, which our grandkids are involved in.
Above: Celebrating our 62nd wedding anniversary in Chicago. Left: Mr. Scheuermann instructs students in 1963.
As advice to CC students I would say, be faithful to our God, obedient to your mother and father. Be a great brother to your siblings. Remember down the road sometime in your life, to give back to this place we call CC, this place we all love. As advice to the alumni I would say, love and cherish your life. Be available for your children. Let them know you love them. Be an awesome dad. MIKE ROSSI (OD BD WR)
I was fortunate enough to teach Latin and Psychology at three CC locations from 1976 to 2007. That’s thirty-one years. Tempus fugit, baby! My wife, Helen, and I still reside locally along with our feline companions, Bobby Lemieux and Rudy Valentino, who grudgingly tolerate each other and their overly accommodating owners. Since retirement (which, I may add, is highly underrated) I find myself smiling whenever I hear these lines from an old song: “...With two cats in the yard, Life used to be so hard...” I still do some photography for CC, and my wife and I do a fair amount of traveling. When not pursuing either of these two stimulating activities, I typically follow a more mundane schedule. In the morning I head over to Tim Horton’s to grab a coffee and engage with other old-timers in lively discussions on interesting topics such as Mantle vs. Kaline or Hipple vs. Landry. A few hours later I fire up the Crown Vic, and I head home to continue the rest of my eventful day. I enjoy sitting on my front porch on my oversized rocker while pounding down a six-pack of Ensure and munching on a bag of Centrum Silver. I’ve been known to shout out to passing schoolboys: “Tuck in that shirt” or “Where’s your belt?” In the afternoon I enjoy reading (Cicero’s essay “On Old Age”) and watching classic movies (“Goodbye, Mr. Chips” and “To Sir, With Love”). We go to dinner at 3:45 PM (Senior Specials) and hit the sack around 6:30 PM. Who would have thought that retirement could be so fulfilling? From time to time I run into a former Latin or Psycho boy. Although I may not remember his name, I can usually determine the approximate date of his CC graduation by his greeting. If he addresses me as Rip or Ripper, he probably was a student from the late 70s to the early 90s. If he addresses me as Maestro, he probably was a student from the mid 90s to 2007. Parting words of advice? Never play cards with a guy named Doc. Never eat at a restaurant called Mom’s. Never trust a CC student who says, “I’ll pay you back tomorrow.” T H E V O C AT I O N O F T E A C H I N G • FA L L 2 0 1 4

Who would have thought that retirement could be so fulfilling? - Mike Rossi Jim Albulov hiking the Grand Canyon rim to rim in 2012. JIM ALBULOV (OD) After I left CC in 1975 I bummed around for a couple of years traveling the 48 contiguous states. I caddied, drove a cab, substitute taught, and lived in Arizona for a time. I became a criminal trial lawyer and have tried cases for the past 34 years as both a defense attorney and a prosecutor. I met my wife, Mary Ann Arsenault, in law school, and we have three children. Mark and Max are social workers and Anna works in childcare. I won a national title in handball and ran four marathons. I love skiing, golfing, hiking, reading, and Broadway musicals. My two favorite places, to which I go as often as I can, are New York City and Munising, Michigan. I taught English in Detroit from 2003 to 2010 at Finney, Cass Tech, and the Detroit School of the Arts. I taught Criminal Law for two years at the University of Detroit. I am very lucky and blessed to have survived esophageal cancer with the support of my wife and kids. I first came to CC in the 11th grade after two years at Sacred Heart Seminary. I made friends here as a student, teacher, and alumnus and continue to make new friends as CC is truly a living family. Never underestimate the value of a Catholic education. There’s nothing better than a sound foundation in the three Rs along with a solid moral compass to navigate through life. The most important class I ever took was Algebra. It teaches organization, reasoning, and logical problem solving. JOHN SALTER (OD BD WR) I spent 32 years teaching and coaching at CC, beginning in the fall of 1976 and ending with my retirement in the spring of 2008. I taught mostly business courses including Accounting, Business Law, and Introduction to Business. I also taught Pre-Algebra, Health, Physical Education, and even Typing during my career. I coached Freshman Football (1976-1981), JV and Varsity Baseball (1977-2005), and even Varsity Golf for a couple years in the late 80s.

I’m enjoying a typical retirement, still living in Novi. I have a part-time job in the mornings, and spend the afternoons playing golf, senior hockey, and spending lots of time with my two young grandsons. I still like keeping stats for the Varsity Football Team in the fall and following all the CC sports the rest of the year. As far as advice for CC students, I would tell them not to stress over not knowing what your life’s calling is going to be when you are 16 or 17 years old. Be open to new interests and pursuits. I enjoy reading the Aluminator and learning of the various jobs and interests that my former students are involved in today, which are often much different from what they did in high school. Also, have a “Plan B” if things don’t work out as you hoped. Life can throw you a lot of curves, and you need to be able to adjust and adapt. In high school, I never envisioned myself being a teacher or coach, or earning a private pilot’s license (which I did in my 50s), so sometimes your life goes in directions you don’t anticipate when you are young. BOB TALBOT (OD BD) I came to Catholic Central on Outer Drive in August 1967. I taught Math to all levels for a few years but soon migrated to teaching mostly Honors Math and the Calculus BC. I also was privileged to serve as Department Chair for several years. Early in 1997, with the help of some seriously capable students, we initiated the CC website. I retired from CC in June 2005. I still live in West Bloomfield, but I do have a second home in Kalkaska, Michigan near a lake and acreage in “snow country.” I am active with outdoor activities like snowmobiling, kayaking, hiking, camping and traveling, hoping to camp in all the national parks. Since retiring, I took up web design and sports photography in a serious way. I serve as webmaster and photographer for the Rochester Stoney Creek High School football program. I shoot at several other Stoney Creek sports as well. I enjoy building computers, doing PC diagnostics and repairs for friends and family, and of course experimenting with scenic photography. I thank CC for the 38 years I enjoyed there. I learned as much from the students in my care as I relayed to them. I always loved going to “work,” I never considered it work. Message to students/alumni: Embrace your passion and you’ll never go “to work.”
JOHN KLUKA (BD WR) With the closing of Aquinas High School in Southgate, Fr. John Menner, C.S.B. offered me a teaching position at Catholic Central in May of 2000. I began teaching 10th Grade English and a Freshmen Old Testament class. The next year I was moved to the Theology Department where I taught seniors and sophomores until I retired in June of 2012. There is a television commercial that asks the question: “What would you pay yourself to do?” For me the answer is in volunteering. I volunteer three days a week at an ecumenical food bank that serves eight communities. It is rewarding to see people being able to select food for their families, and it is a way of continuing the Gospel’s message of caring for our brothers and sisters. BRIAN KOLKA (BD WR) SHERRILL LEFFORGE (BD WR) Thinking of the fact that some of my former students are now on the faculty of CC, I was reminded of the many things I expected of them. But then again they always rose to the occasion! Hopefully, I’ll do the same. I am the baby of retirees – not the youngest but one of the most recently retired. I began teaching at CC in August 1994. I would have started earlier but there were hardly ever any openings. I started teaching in the archdiocese in August 1977 and retired in June 2013.
I often think of the years I spent at CC (1998-2009) with fondness and a smile. I really miss the nice rapport I had with many of the students, especially those who understood my sense of humor, guys like Palazeti, Bowling, Bellino, Horal, Sarlitto, Waterstradt, Rogowski, and many others. My garage (the closest I have to a ‘man cave’) is decorated with the many pennants given to me by my students. Many probably didn’t realize it at the time, but I really respected them. Several of the faculty will always be dear to me, and I hold them in my heart. Since leaving CC, some days I think my departure may have been too soon. For a couple of years I did some subbing at Northville High School and the Plymouth/Canton high schools. I did a lot of golfing without seeing any improvement in that frustrating game. I have been able to get in some travel that I always wanted to do. I went to Rome and many other cities in Italy, as well as Paris, Normandy, Athens, Santorini, and Belize. Many were an adventure and created many memories. While reading, I do often catch myself telling myself that “this would be good information for my students” or “this would make a real good Kolka Friday Philosophy.” I still reside in Canton, Michigan and will probably be here for a while. I sincerely hope the guys I had in my history classes realize the great experience they had as men of CC. I wish them the very best.
While at CC I taught Old Testament, Catholic Faith, Sacraments, AP American History, the Revelation of Jesus Christ in Scripture, and Who is Jesus Christ? I loved my years at CC! I think I’ll always speak of CC in the present tense. I am CC too! And the young men of CC will always be ‘my boys.’ I live in Redford Township and soon I’ll be volunteering in the Spiritual Care Department at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia. I know I’ll have many CC connections there – dads, moms, and former students. How blessed I am! Men of CC, always remember the Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge to which we are called. Many of you heard me ‘preach’ on this so I won’t repeat myself. Thank you, parents, for establishing it and letting me build-a-bit on it. If the football jersey looks familiar, I got it from Fr. Ned who got it when we moved to our fifth and permanent home on Wixom Road. I’ll be donating it to put in the archives.

FRANK COREJ (OD BD) In September of 1970 I joined CC as a math teacher. I soon learned about “Teach me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge” and learned about the past history of CC’s scholastic and athletic accomplishments. During my ten years at CC I taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, and Trigonometry, and I was also involved with the athletic department. During my first year at CC I helped Fr. Joseph Miller, C.S.B. coach Varsity Baseball and subsequently became the Varsity Coach for nine years. Winning the State Baseball Championship in 1979 was one of the highlights of my coaching career. I also helped coach football and wrestling. Fr. James Enright, C.S.B. and a number of students dared me to play intramural hockey so I took the challenge even though I could hardly skate. Now some 40 years later, I still play twice a week. I also go skiing with my children and grandchildren. During the summer I am very active with golf, bicycling, and rollerblading. My wife, Cookie, and I live in Bloomfield Township. We recently celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. We have three children and five grandchildren. They are our pride and joy. Since retiring, my wife and I travel extensively. So far we have travelled to 21 different countries and we have a number of other trips planned. My advice to the current Shamrocks is to study diligently and take advantage of everything CC has to offer. Enjoy the spirit and camaraderie, because you will develop life-long friendships. During my teaching and coaching career, I can honestly say my years at CC were the most rewarding and satisfying of my life. The hundreds of students, athletes, and parents have provided me with lasting friendships and fond memories. The move to CC was the best decision I ever made in my teaching career. If I were ever to win the lottery, I would love to return to CC and work for free. There is no better school in the state. Go Shamrocks! NEAL ALPINER (OD BD WR) Before I retired in 2011, after 38 years at Catholic Central, I asked a former teacher who had retired, “Are you finding enough to do to keep busy?” He replied, “I don’t know when I had time to work all those years!” Such is the case with me. I am currently keeping my CC connection by teaching the ACT Prep class yearly with Mrs. Storm. I am also tutoring several students on a weekly basis in all levels of Math as well as Physics. My wife is also tutoring CC students in English and History. Students have not changed much over the years. I also keep in contact with several of the CC faculty both current and retired. We go out for meals or just get together and talk. My wife, Tobye, and I have done a good deal of traveling and hope to continue doing this as long as we remain healthy. We have taken an Alaska cruise, traveled to New England, and are spending two months a year in Florida as snowbirds with our dog, Buddy. Of course, Disney is involved. Is there anywhere else in Florida?

I have also had several volunteer positions. I was a docent for a period of time at the Detroit Science Center, until they closed up for a while. My wife and I taught an Internet class for senior citizens at the Farmington Senior Center. It was quite interesting trying to teach some of those 75+ year old seniors how to use a computer and the Internet. At least a few times we would hear “Where is the “g” key?” Also, Tobye and I have done some work being ambassadors at the Michigan Humane Society. Other hobbies include reading, doing puzzles, solving equations (just kidding!), and taking long walks with family. Retirement has been great so far and I highly recommend it. My wife used to tell me kiddingly after she retired that “retirement is good for everyone but her spouse.” Well, I think it’s great. JOSÉ BARTOLOMÉ (BD WR) I worked as a Spanish teacher at Catholic Central from 1984 to 2008. After retiring, I continued to live in Ann Arbor and worked part-time at the Ann Arbor District Library. When my wife retired in 2013, we moved to California to be near our two children and granddaughter. We are living in a condo in Napa in northern California and every day we enjoy the beautiful weather and scenery. I am lucky to have a garden plot in my condo complex and I like to work there with Lucia, my granddaughter. We have visited many of the beautiful spots nearby like Bodega Bay, Pointe Reyes, Monterey, Calistoga, and of course, San Francisco. My advice to students and alumni would be to work hard, save money, help those you can, and enjoy the people you are blessed to have in your life.
DENNIS TYMOSKO (OD) After graduating from Catholic Central in 1958, I never imagined that I would one day return as a faculty member. With the help of Fr. Norbert Clemens, C.S.B. I was hired in 1964 by Fr. William Gibbons, C.S.B. as an English teacher and freshman football coach. During my nine years at CC, I also taught Religion, coached some basketball, became a guidance counselor, disciplinarian, and finally was appointed the first lay athletic director, succeeding Fr. Joseph Barnes, C.S.B. I was even the Head Wrestling “Coach” for one season, but quickly recognized my limitations and convinced Mike Rodriguez to leave River Rouge High and join the staff at CC. I then went back to what I did best to support the wrestling team and drove the bus. Bus driving was the only area where my performance at CC exceeded those of my life-long friend, Bob Santello. I am also proud to have hired Bernie Holowicki as Basketball Coach and Tony Magni as the Track and Cross Country Coach. One of my regrets is having left CC before seeing all of Tony’s successes. My years at CC were some of the most memorable of my life. Many members of the class of ’58 attended Patty’s and my wedding, and the Glee Club sang at our wedding Mass. Thank you, Basilian Fathers, fellow teachers, and men of CC for all the memories. I have lived in Miami Lakes, Florida since 1977. I am retired and enjoy my family, my grandkids, and spending time on the golf course.
MIRZA BEG (BD) I taught Mathematics at Catholic Central from 1984 to 2000. During my stay, I immensely enjoyed working with CC students. From the very beginning, I became a special part of the Boys’ Bowl assemblies with my ‘international cheers.’ The reason I left CC in 2000 was that I became the Principal of Huda School in Franklin, Michigan. After four years there, our family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina in 2004, mainly because my wife, Priscilla, could not tolerate the harsh Michigan winters, although she was originally from Port Huron! Unfortunately, she passed away in December 2011 after a long battle with her medical problems. My daughter, Meredith, is serving in the US Air Force as a major. She began working at the Pentagon starting in June 2014. My son Zeshawn ’01, a CC graduate, is finishing his Ph.D. this year at Harvard. Zeshawn and his wife have a wonderful three-year-old daughter and had a son in May. After working for seven years at Charlotte-Meclenburg Schools, I retired in 2010. Presently, I teach math at a community school in Charlotte to keep myself busy. I also teach a STEM class at University of North Carolina at Charlotte. In addition, I run the Sunday school for our community. Recently, I was invited [for a visit] by my former students in Pakistan (class of 1968). They honored me for “extraordinary services” to their school. The only message I can give to the CC students is to ‘keep up the good work.’ I learned a lot from CC and I continually use that in my everyday life as well as my work. I try to inspire my students by examples from CC.

My years at CC were some of the most memorable of my life. - Dennis Tymosko
FR. JOHN WHEELER, C.S.B. ’57 (OD BD WR) It has been five years now since I retired from the classroom, mainly to make room for younger teachers. I haven’t regretted my decision for a minute, though I am quite surprised at how busy I have been since retirement. God has blessed me with continued good health, so I have become more active than ever in doing priestly work such as weekend Masses at St. Priscilla of Livonia and in several other parishes as needed, multiple penance services in Lent and Advent, hospital and nursing home visits, and about five weddings a year, mainly of former CC students.
Steven Huber making his First Profession of Vows to Fr. George Smith, C.S.B., Superior General of the Basilian Fathers. STEVEN HUBER, C.S.B. (WR) After teaching drama and working in Campus Ministry at Catholic Central as a Basilian Associate during the 2011-2012 school year, I entered the Novitiate for the Basilian Fathers in Sugar Land, Texas in August of 2012. I made my first profession of vows on August 15, 2013. I am currently residing at the Basilian Scholasticate in Houston, Texas, and working on a Masters of Divinity Degree as part of the program of priestly formation at St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston. I am also involved in the choir at the Chapel of Saint Basil on the campus of the University of St. Thomas, the Galveston-Houston Archdiocesan Choir, and I am the director of the Life Teen Music Ensemble at St. Anne’s Parish in Houston. RAY GENTZ (BD) I was at CC from 1979 to 1990 and taught Spanish I, II, and III. I was also moderator of the CC Bridge Club. After CC I worked for 12 years at ADP in data entry, Internet research and OCR/scanning. From there I had various jobs at temp agencies including five years at the U of M Health System. I was a volunteer in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program for eight years. Currently I live in Ann Arbor a mile from the Big House and am self-employed, working as a certified bridge director, directing two bridge games a week and teaching bridge classes for the Ann Arbor Senior Center. To stay in good health, I try to get over to the Livonia Rec Center at least four times a week. During the coldest part of winter, I reside and work at Light of Christ parish in Clearwater, Florida. Besides the pastoral work, there is time for a little golf, a few concerts, and dining out with family and friends. For the rest of the year, I reside at the Basilian residence in Novi, Michigan. Some evenings you can find me wearing a tuxedo or a black suit and tie, as I usher at either the Detroit Opera House or at Orchestra Hall. I am a member of the Board of Governors of Assumption University in Windsor, and I am an active member of the CC class of 1957 which meets for brunch the 3rd Thursday of every month. Having taught French for nearly 40 years, I have retained strong ties with numerous French friends, and have managed to get back to France for a visit each year. ORRIN TIBBITS ’71 (OD BD) I am a classmate of 1971 [CC Principal] Fr. Dennis Noelke, C.S.B. ’71. After Fr. Mizzi hired me in 1976, I stayed at CC for seven great years as a teacher and as a coach. However, for whatever youthful reason, I decided I needed a new challenge so I left in June of 1983 for that new challenge with the then largest pharmaceutical company in the world,
Hoechst Roussell. It was a great job for me because I worked with and for great people. I also used my teaching skills on a daily basis with “students,” who also had attended medical or pharmacy school. I stayed in the pharmaceutical business for 23 years and really had not planned on leaving, but Fr. Richard Elmer, C.S.B. offered me a chance to return to CC as the Director of the Alumni Association. How could I turn down an offer to return to a place I really loved and a chance to be there as my son Michael would begin his years at CC? I had a great three years directing the Alumni Association and watching my son experience CC in his own way. Many of the Alumni that I met during my tenure in the Alumni Association are now some of my best friends. CC’s Alumni are truly a remarkable group of men. For years I had hoped to have an opportunity to return to the classroom as a teacher and in 2011 the good Lord blessed me with that opportunity. I am in my third year of teaching 5th grade at Spiritus Sanctus Academy in Plymouth. SSA is a small Catholic school run by the Dominican Sisters. The kids keep me busy but I love being able to see the future in their faces every day. CC had an enormous impact on my life as a student and as a teacher. Both of our sons are CC grads and my dear wife also had a CC connection through one of her brothers. I cannot imagine my life without CC having had such a profound effect on all facets of who I am. I would love to hear from some of my former CC students although I see quite a few of you on a regular basis. Please feel free to drop me an e-mail. God Bless all of you and thanks for the memories! FR. CARL BELISCH, C.S.B. (OD) I taught at Catholic Central from 1974 to 1978, the last years at Outer Drive. After CC I was appointed Director of Associates. I moved to Rochester, New York and traveled around the country visiting the young men who were of college age and interested in becoming Basilians. This job included recruiting prospective members by advertising, visiting schools and parishes to promote vocations to the Basilians as well as to other religious orders of priests and brothers, and to the diocesan priesthood. After five years as Director of Vocations I moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to be the chaplain at St. Pius High School. I was six years in Albuquerque and then came to St. Thomas High School in Houston,
Texas as a teacher of English, Religion, and Latin. Shortly after arriving at St. Thomas, I was elected as the Regional Representative of the Basilians in the Western United States. For eight years I had a seat on the Basilian General Council. My responsibility was to visit the Basilians in my area and bring their concerns to the General Council. This included visiting other Basilian schools and parishes and reporting to the council about their activities and concerns. During that period I continued living with the priests at St. Thomas in Houston though I did not teach in the school. When my term on the General Council ended I began teaching full-time at St. Thomas until I retired in June of 2008. Since that time I have lived at Dillon House in Houston which is a retirement community for Basilians. I am healthy enough to say Mass at a number of different parishes around the city of Houston and am enjoying a quieter, more prayerful life. JIM EDDY (BD) In the spring of 1980, I retired from the Detective Bureau of the Detroit Police Department. It was after I had been offered a contract to teach U.S. History and World History at CC. That first year, my classroom was what would later become the Chapel on Breakfast Drive. The following year, I was assigned to teach Civics along with Pre-Civil War History. My fondest recollection of the ten years I was on staff would be the year I was moderator for the Lacrosse team. It held club status, but the following year, it was designated a Varsity sport, and somehow I ended up coaching the JV squad. My wife and I lived in Livonia until 2006, then finally gave up on northern winters. We bought a home in Franklin, Tennessee where we are much more comfortable between December and April, but still enjoy the seasons. Travel has always been our passion so we have spent a considerable amount of time “on the road.” Our journeys have taken us to the 50 states, 11 Canadian Provinces, and 41 foreign countries. I am grateful to Fr. Paramo for giving me this opportunity to extend my best wishes to all the fine young men with whom I had the privilege to work. I would like you to know that even though our paths will probably never again cross, our time together will continue to be among my most cherished memories. It is my prayer that God will bless you, and yours.
My advice for students now would be keep the faith in God and be ready to adjust often in life. - Ray Gentz

Biology Guest Lecturer Dr. Nico Villanueva presented to Mr. Jeff Baker’s Advanced Placement Biology class. Dr. Villanueva studies G-protein coupled receptors (GPCR) in Roger Sunahara’s Lab at the University of Michigan. His laboratory “is primarily interested in the elucidation of the molecular mechanism by which hormones activate G protein-Coupled Receptors (GPCRs). We utilize biochemical and biophysical approaches to delineate how hormone binding to these cell surface receptors leads to activation of G proteins. G protein-coupled receptors represent the largest family of membrane proteins in the human genome and the third largest family of genes overall. Their diversity has made GPCRs the target for greater than 30% of all therapeutics currently on the market.” Dr. Villanueva’s presentation incorporated brand new information about the structure of GPCR that had only been published two weeks prior. Mr. Baker’s students thoroughly enjoyed the talk and meeting Dr. Villanueva.

Did You Know About CC’S Outdoor Clubs? Did you know that the CC Backpacking Club recently finished its 17th annual backpacking and kayak trip? Did you know that the CC Shotgun Club is entering its 5th year this coming fall? Did you know that CC started an Archery Club last fall and shoots every Tuesday in the auxiliary gym? The CC Backpacking Club takes an annual trip on Mother’s Day weekend. A second trip will be added this upcoming fall. Backpacks, stoves, tents, water filters, dry bags, and other gear is provided free of charge. This trip involves both a hiking and kayak component. This club is open to any CC student or alumnus. The CC Shotgun Club shoots every Wednesday from the start of the school year through the end of October. Shooting resumes again in the spring. Shooting takes place at the Island Lake Shooting Range in Milford. Shotguns, shell pouches, eye protection, and ear protection are provided free of charge to students who do not have their own equipment. This club is open to any CC student or alumnus. A free firearm safety class is offered in the fall, as well. Video link to CC Shotgun Club http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=i0bYpZo0qmY (or scan the QR code to the right) The CC Archery Club meets every Tuesday in the auxiliary gym after school. Targets, bows, and arrows are provided free of charge. The club uses the Matthews Genesis bow, which is adjustable for draw length and draw weight. The club also follows National Archery in Schools Program rules and regulations. This club is open to any CC student or alumnus. These clubs provide a competitive free environment and encourage all students to get out and enjoy all the gifts that God has provided. Lacrosse – STATE FINALIST The Varsity Lacrosse Team, led by Coach Dave Wilson ’88, finished the season with an impressive 15-6 overall record. The team finished second in the Catholic League and won the program’s first Regional Championship in four years with an 18 -11 victory over Clarkston. In the semifinals, the Shamrocks earned a thrilling 15 -14 overtime victory over Forest Hills Northern and a trip to the State Finals. After falling short against Brother Rice in the championship game, CC finished the season as State Finalists.
2014 Varsity Baseball Team The Varsity Baseball Team, led by first-year coach Dan Michaels ’84, had an up and down season, marked by many close games. The Shamrocks finished the season with an overall record of 12-18. The season came to an end in the second round of the District playoffs with a loss to North Farmington. The roster is filled with many talented players who will continue to work toward even more success next season.
Golf – STATE FINALIST The Varsity Golf Team had a very impressive season! The team, led by second-year coach Mike Anderson, won both the Catholic League and District Championships. After finishing second at the Regional, the Shamrocks qualified for the State Finals at Forest Akers East at Michigan State University in East Lansing. The team was tied for 1st place after the first round and entering day two. CC played well but unfortunately fell short of a state championship, losing by one stroke to Swartz Creek.
