WINTER 2014

A Message from the

President

Dear Alumni and Friends, Is it really Christmastime again already?! It must be, because here we are at the end of another semester at Catholic Central. And because this semester is ending, I have been visiting the Seniors in their Theology classes to share with them the story of my own discernment of a Basilian priestly vocation, as I did last year at this time. In no way different from twelve months ago, it has been an occasion of sheer exhilaration for me to speak and discuss and banter with these young men who insist on wearing their costume of boyish grins. Their attentive faces (yes, attentive!), their good humor, and their piercing questions, even though teachers encounter these blessings every day, never cease to surprise us and inspire us with a renewed and invigorating appreciation for the profound value of the art of education. This art rivals the magnificent masterpieces that we associate with art and artists from all times and places. The art of education, moreover, is never static, but alive with the dynamism of our students’ lives. Its raw material is nothing less than the human mind encountering and grappling with the great fund of human experience and knowledge from both the past and the present of humanity – the past, inherited in the collective wisdom of the masters, and the present, still becoming enfleshed in the budding experience of our students. Sparks fly and the sky lights up when the discoveries and accomplishments of the human mind from the past are picked up, inspected, shaken about, questioned, and embellished by the human mind in the present – and how very exciting that it can all happen within a 45-minute class period! Who could possibly be more fortunate than teachers in their classrooms as they witness this fascinating interplay taking shape and reaching new frontiers in the intellectual stamina and progress of their students? In this issue of the Aluminator, we are honored and take delight in celebrating the stories of those Shamrocks who, in keeping with their diligent efforts and hard work in their courses of study at CC, scaled dizzying intellectual heights and reached majestic summits in a host of academic disciplines, thereby earning the singular distinction of receiving the Fr. Daniel L. Dillon, C.S.B. Memorial Award for Academic Excellence, which is presented annually to the graduating Senior with the highest 4-year grade point average. Since my arrival at CC in 2005, I have been very happy to observe that never has the Dillon Award winner not also been a fine young gentleman, someone of whom his family and the Catholic Central family have been rightly very proud. I like to boast that I have taught several of them in class, but the question still remains open: Who taught what to whom? There is no question, however, that their sparks flew far beyond them as they lit up our CC sky, which continues to shine brightly because of their stellar achievements, enshrined now among the mesmerizing feats of so many other talented Shamrocks in our blessed history and tradition. One star lights up our sky now, the Star of Bethlehem. May the Christ Child, on whom that star shone so brightly, light our own way as we journey with the wise men and the shepherds among us to the place where we shall be together with him, Christ our Lord. On behalf of the Catholic Central family, I sincerely wish you and your families abundant blessings of peace and joy in this holy Christmas season. May God bless us all, everyone! Mary Alma Mater, inspire us evermore. Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Jefferson Mark Thompson, C.S.B. President

This year’s campaign focuses on alumni who have contributed to EMU’s success. Some give their money, some give their time, but all care about Eastern and what it means in the lives of its students and alumni. Pat is showcased on one of those banners. His banner hangs near the south end of campus, where EMU began in 1849.
