A Message from the
President
Dear Alumni and Friends, A new school year never fails to renew and re-energize us at Catholic Central High School. The hope and promise of new efforts, new accomplishments, new faces, and new dreams fill the classrooms and hallways to inspire the kind of excitement that only a brotherhood united can establish. Frightened Freshmen arrive to find themselves dwarfed by soaring Seniors, but within a week all is as it ought to be: brothers learning together, brothers learning from each other, brothers growing up together. When the occasion allows, it is my custom to stand at the school crest in front of the chapel at the end of the school day, because I enjoy greeting and shaking hands with as many Shamrocks as possible as they come from their last class of the day, making their merry way to athletic or quiz bowl practice, club activities, part-time jobs, and eventually – of course – to homework. Some faces and names I know well, others are just beginning to fill my world. It is always a bubbling and invigorating stream of potential and promise that I wade through in these brief hi-and-bye moments. As they pass by me with their charming smiles, I could well be gazing at the next Thomas Jefferson, or Martin Luther King, or Duke Ellington, or Jackson Pollock, or Wayne Gretzky, or – at long last – the one who discovers the cure for cancer. I am confident that I am also witnessing young men who will grow into faithful husbands, loving fathers, and holy priests. Such is the stuff that Shamrocks are made of. Every year, all the Varsity Letter winners from among these Shamrocks embrace the opportunity to honor and celebrate this exceptional stuff that Shamrocks are made of when they select the winner of the Fr. James Whelan Award. Since my arrival at CC in 2005, I have taught most of these winners in my Senior theology class of Christian Vocations. I continue to marvel at how they always get it right, and how my perceptions of them seem to match their own acute appreciation of and respect for each other. The Whelan Award winner is, first and foremost, a leader among his peers at all times through his character and conduct as an outstanding Christian gentleman, one who has also excelled in his academic and athletic performance during his four years at CC. How blessed and proud we are to applaud the deserving recipient of this honor each year in a school where not just one candidate is endowed with these shining qualities. At the end of the school day, when the students pass by me and I shake their hands at the school crest, I cannot help but rejoice that Catholic Central is the kind of place where every one of these Shamrocks is offered the opportunity, the encouragement, and the love to discover and develop all his talents, and so to enrich and improve a world that is desperate for his presence and influence. In the mystery of God’s grace and providence, ever unfolding through the sometimes mundane and sometimes exhilarating experience of time, I am happy to be shaking hands everyday with one Whelan Award winner after another, whether or not his name will eventually be engraved upon the trophy. Not to worry, his soul is surely being etched into the history of salvation. And that is reward enough. Mary Alma Mater, inspire us evermore. Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Jefferson Mark Thompson, C.S.B. President

National French Contest
National Signing Day
Each year, Detroit Catholic Central High School participates in Le Grand Concours, or the National French Contest. This is a 60 minute examination designed, written, financed, and disseminated by the members of the American Association of Teachers of French. Its purpose is to help stimulate further interest in the teaching and learning of French and to help identify and reward achievement on the part of both students and teachers.
On Tuesday, April 30, 2013, the spring National Signing Day, five senior student-athletes signed Letters of Intent, formally committing to continue the academic and athletic careers at the respective Colleges and Universities.
Over the past several years, the men of CC have scored exceptionally well and have placed amongst the top 25 in the nation. This year is no exception as teachers Ms. Borgelt and Mr. Prais saw great results! The World Language Department would like to recognize and congratulate those individuals from our high school who have done amazingly well.
