A veteran of the restaurant business for over 20 years Ben has been working locally since 1995. His first job in the industry came at the age of 15, working as a buser in his home town of Williamsburg,Va. “Eventually, I became a bartender where I really excelled. The Emerald Coast is blessed to have some of the best golf courses in the southeast and four of them are located in Sandestin. There are three public courses, Baytowne, The Raven and The Links. Burnt Pine is a private members only club. Sandestin courses have won a series of national awards including Best Golf in Northwest Florida by Birmingham Magazine and Top 75 Golf Resorts Worldwide. Golf Digest has named Sandestin as one of the Top Golf Resorts nationwide with a four and one half star rating. Golf for Women magazine listed it as one of the best courses in the nation and the courses have received the coveted Gold Tee Award multiple times. In addition, Sandestin has been a part of the PGA championship tour. The courses have received a total of over 30 different awards since their inception.
The Baytowne course was designed by Tom Jackson and is rated four and one half stars for play. This course extends from the beach to the bay with rolling hills offering awesome vista views. Pure white sand traps dot the far ends of the dark green fairways and the greens are meticulously maintained. Sky blue colors are reflected mirror-like upon the myriad of small lakes, ponds and natural lagoons on clear sunny days. This is a great course to travel across the resort as the fairways actually straddle the Emerald Coast Parkway which separates the “bay side” from the “gulf side.” You get a little bit of everything with this course as far as visuals are concerned. These views include not only the bay to the north but also provide a tantalizing glimpse of the shimmering gulf in the distance to the south, amidst the towers along the beach. This par 71 course has lush landscaping with over 250,000 flowering plants including over 50,000 day lilies alone. There are also a number of exotic aquatic plantings located in the numerous lagoons with pastel colored ornamental grasses placed to border water ways and marshy areas. Small ponds and lakes dot the entire course with towering Loblolly Pines extending along the sides of many of the fairways in some heavily wooded areas. These evergreens retain their beautiful color year round and are indigenous to this part of the country. The Links is another Jackson design and is the original golf course, completed in the mid 1970s. It has been rated as one of the best golf courses in the entire state of Florida. across the bay from the north or shooting in across the gulf to the south. The challenge is that they can change in an instant depending upon the weather. Distant thunderstorms on the other side of the bay can whip up winds even if the sun is still shining on this side, which can be a common occurrence during the summer months. In the late fall, dry northerly breezes are almost always the norm but provide a refreshing sense of well being under azure blue skies. The Links course has five fairways that meander along the water’s edge extending from Horseshoe Bayou out into Choctawhatchee bay. Besides the strategy required to circumvent the bay breezes, you may find that you need to focus on your shot instead of the beautiful visual distractions. These include awesome views of Baytowne Whar f, the Grand Sandestin and a big marina which is decorated by luxury yachts that are docked there. On the bay itself you can see fish jumping out of the water, usually with a distant pod of dolphin in fast pursuit. Be sure to check on Afternoon Specials which are available from time to time. Our coastal community is blessed with a bevy of creative individuals. A prime example is the gifted storyteller and folk artist Alan Moore. His story is about desire, abandonment and redemption. But what Moore uses to tell that story is what makes his art unique. Society provides Moore with the boundless resource he utilizes. Alan Moore uses salvaged and repurposed materials to bring the world in his heart and mind to life.

R E C YC L E D RENAISSANCE Throughout history, artists have been challenged as to how to best communicate their vision and which media will make that vision come to life. Art is often a reflection of society and its time, but how an artist chooses to comment upon a thought or feeling can be as infinite as the stars in van Gogh’s night sky. Allegedly, when a patron inquired as to how Michelangelo sculpted his masterwork, David, from formless stone, the Maestro replied, “I simply chipped away at all that was not David.” Stone, paint, wood, fabric, metal, glass – in an artist’s hands, each element can tell a different tale, eliciting emotion across the spectrum from their audience: heartbreak, joy, fear, despair, ecstasy, hope. Art has been the best chronicle of our passage through time and will be the greatest commentary on what we aspired to long after we cease to be. Art, put simply, is the most extraordinary way we tell the stories of our time.

Moore and his children collect our cast-offs: cans, bottle caps, the odd piece of metal, old doors and windows – which his children then sort and organize by shape and color. This provides Moore with his unique palette from which he will begin to tell his tale. The children contribute by painting old wooden pieces, providing their father with a bright canvas to affix his many treasures upon. Beautiful tables, shelves and sculptures are then wrought from Moore’s deft hands and many of his creations find their way into his garden studio – a fitting gallery for those things made beautiful that once littered the ground. And as many before who studied at their master’s knee, the children themselves are emerging artists – crafting their own stories from their unconventional harvests.

Pish Posh Patchouli’s has created quite a name for itself since originally opening in Seaside twenty years ago and has become synonymous among its devoted clientele as a pampered privilege. Lynn Dugas, the vivacious, attractive owner, is originally from Nashville and is also an accomplished architect. Early on, she designed a number of custom built homes in Rosemary Beach and immediately fell in love with this unique picturesque community. On July 5, 2007 this enchanting specialty boutique was moved to the charming Dutch colonial inspired village of Rosemary Beach and is located right across from the Town Hall at 82 South Barnett Square. Lynn is aided by a very capable, friendly staff including Lesley Hoover and Ginny Bartlum. Ginny contributes toward multiple retail operations and Lesley is a veritable font of knowledge on all of the unique pampered offerings. This includes exotic per fumes for women, fine colognes for men, handmade soaps, scented candles, shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, hand lotions, skin creams, cosmetics, and nail essentials. The store is an opulent cornucopia of such luxuries displayed in a beautiful

setting with high ceilings, light molasses colored hardwood flooring, vintage crystal chandeliers and other decorative items that were procured at estate auctions throughout the south. This creates an old world ambiance that is elegant but also friendly and laid back. As soon as you enter inside, the rich scents delight the senses. Luxurious fragrances abound here.

Patchouli’s The main focal point at Patchouli’s is a hand carved, beautifully scrolled, mahogany antique bar with leaded, stained glass panels. However, instead of your favorite beverages, the shelves are filled with apothecary jars containing natural oils, lotions, gels and creams. This serves as their famous “Custom Scent Bar” where visiting shoppers can create their own unique fragrances. A multitude of glass vials on the counter contain different scents which can be combined for your own customized creation with the help of the “Fragrance-tender.” Once you have created your own exotic scent it is combined and bottled with whatever product you desire from the apothecary jars. These include colognes, per fumes, body lotions, shower gels, shampoos and conditioners to name a few. Prices range from $9 to $40 for all of these custom created products with many sizes, even for travel.
Another popular product line is from the “Soap Pedaler.” These include handmade scented soaps that are locally made in small custom batches. They come in every vivid color of the rainbow and everything in between. These soaps are nicely packaged and include thirty-five different fragrances all derived from natural ingredients so they are great for sensitive skin. Many shoppers purchase not only for themselves but also as a “Take Home” gift since half bars are only $3.75 and full sized bars are $7.50 per slice. The Soap Pedaler also makes customized scented Sugar Scrubs for exfoliating and moisturizing, Bath “Fizzies”, Shea Butter Scrubs, Foot and Body Creams, as well as Hand and Body “Whipped Cream”. The popular Sugar Scrubs now come in a solid form and are the latest rage in popularity. Patchouli’s also carries famed luxurious scents from LAFCO NY. These include a very rare cologne and per fume called Santa Marie Novella. This namesake came from the oldest apothecary in Europe which was founded in Florence, Italy in 1612. They also had the unique distinction of creating custom scents and fragrances for the famous Medici family at that time. Fragrances are
available for both Ladies and Gentlemen. Only a handful of boutiques across the nation carry this renowned brand and Patchouli’s in Rosemary Beach is one of them! They also have a line of LAFCO scented candles that include the popular “House and Home” Edition which comes in fragrances for every room. These include such scents as Dining Room ( Celery Thyme), Kitchen (Cilantro Orange), Bathroom (Marine), Master Bedroom (Chamomile Lavender), Library (Sage and Walnut), Den (Redwood, Office (Rosemary Eucalyptus), Guest Room (Daffodil), and of course Beach House (Sea and Dune), just to name a few.
