FALL INTO One of the most delightful times of the year here in Destin and along The Emerald Coast begins after the Autumn Equinox when the days are shorter than the evenings. This occurs around September 21st and usually ushers in some of the most beautiful fall weather you can experience anywhere in the world. Cobalt blue sunlit skies are accompanied by a refreshing sea breeze with extraordinarily comfortable daytime temperatures in the mid seventies. Nights are wonderfully cool and crisp with lows in the high fifties. The humid summer season is replaced with dry air that requires no need for air conditioning or heaters so that even the temperature symbolizes perfection. Such weather accomplishes amazing things as it invigorates the soul and provides a happy countenance of spirit. This Season of Happiness is not short lived either, since it generally runs from September through the entire month of November. Fall Gulf water temperatures remain warm enough to swim almost through Thanksgiving. In addition, this wonderful time of the year coincides with lower rental rates since the busy traditional summer season usually ends after the start of September. The crowds of visiting families who arrive to vacation around Memorial Day generally leave before Labor Day due to earlier school schedules, so the beaches are in less demand.

O DESTIN For this same reason, from late October until the following March, rental rates here are at their absolute lowest level which also makes it a very economical time to visit Destin! Fall events in Destin coincide with awesome Autumn weather starting on October 1st. The premier event of course is the annual Fishing Rodeo that has earned Destin the reputation of being “the luckiest fishing village in the world.” Over 30,000 anglers arrive here from across the nation and other parts of the world to compete in the Destin Fishing Rodeo which is held from October 1st through October 31st every year. Destin was the obvious choice for this event due to the special bounty of the sea and the fact that we have the largest private charter fishing fleet in the Gulf of Mexico. Anglers win prizes by competing with each other for daily, weekly and monthly fish size totals. Over $200,000 is awarded in trophies, merchandise and bonds to the lucky winners. Virtually every type of game fish is represented including in-shore catches
of King Mackerel, off-shore snares of Marlin and Sailfish as well as deep water bottom fishing for Snapper and Grouper. You receive an automatic free entry license when you participate on a Destin charter fishing boat for this thrilling and potentially profitable adventure. The 34th Annual Destin Seafood Festival will be held this year along the harbor front on October 5th through October 7th. This popular event started back in 1979. It was founded by Fran Beaird, Nancy Cheney and other members of the Ladies Charter Boat Association Auxiliary to help their husbands who were boat captains. It was a huge success, encouraging more people to visit the docks, charter their boats and participate in the Destin Fishing Rodeo.This year it will run from Harborwalk Village along the docks at East Pass Marina to AJ’s Seafood & Oyster House, Dewey Destin’s, The Boathouse Oyster Bar, The Royal Melvin City Heritage Park and Fisherman’s Wharf. Admission is free! This event is is known for its abundant feast of fresh seafood harvested directly from the Gulf and Bay. The many venues include area restaurants and private angler entrepreneurs who serve up dishes that are deep fried, grilled, sautéed, blackened or Cajun style with lots of yummy side dishes like gumbo, hush puppies, tater fries, corn on the cob and slaw. FALL INTO DESTIN musical entertainment will provide festive accompaniment on multiple stages scattered throughout the grounds. These will include live performances from the Main Destin City Stage, the Harborwalk Village Amphitheater, Harry T’s Lighthouse, the Crazy Lobster, Tightlines, AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar, and The Boathouse Oyster Bar. There are also activities planned especially for children. There will be plenty of things to entertain them in a Kid’s Fun Zone including arts & crafts, face painting, fun rides, inflatables and games. The event kicks off at 3:00 pm on Friday October 5th and runs until 10:00 pm. Saturday, October 6th it will be held from 10:00 am until 10:00 pm and on Sunday, October 7th from 11:00 am until 5:00 pm. It wouldn’t be October without some

kind of Oktoberfest and the Beaches of South Walton are no exception. The Baytowne Wharf Beer Festival is scheduled on October 19th and 20th. This charming “Nouveau” New Orleans village is less than ten years old and is located on Choctawhatchee Bay at the renowned Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Miramar Beach. Graceful pedestrian bridges arch over a long lagoon that connects one side of the village to the other – complete with restaurants, bars and specialty boutiques. On the other side is the Sandestin Marina with its big yachts and a long wharf that juts out into the bay, hence the name- the Village of Baytowne Wharf. The Baytowne Wharf Beer Festival will feature over 100 different American domestic specialty beers
from across the nation as well as international craft beers from other countries for sampling. Brewery representatives will be on hand to impart knowledge to beer consuming aficionados about various lagers and ales. Live musical entertainment will be provided during the festival at the Events Plaza Stage which is next to the Village Green. Tickets may be purchased in advance for 25 dollars or on either of the actual days of the event for 30 dollars. The price of the ticket includes a beer tasting glass, (presumably NOT a mug since there will be over 100 samples to be tasted!) and a special discount for purchases. Down toward the far eastern end of Scenic 30A, a wine version of
Oktoberfest will be held at Rosemary Beach Uncorked, also known as “Eat. Drink. Be Rosemary.” This one-day happening is scheduled for Saturday, October 20th in a picturesque Dutch Coloniallooking town that feels as if you are visiting some exotic isle in the West Indies. Cobblestone avenues meander past European-styled shops, restaurants and town homes adjacent to public lawns that are meticulously manicured. The 75 dollar ticket allows you to stroll down these quaint streets visiting nine different restaurants that will have special signature dishes accompanied by samplings of paired boutique wines. Besides the great wine, last year’s food entrees included a variety of unique seafood appetizers, specialty cheeses, various tapas, sushi, gourmet pizzas and even chocolates. On Saturday, October 27th from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday, October 28th from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm there will be the Annual Destin Festival of Arts at the Henderson State Beach Park in Destin. Over 100 juried artists both locally and from around the nation will be setting up their creative works for view and purchase along the dunes overlooking the gorgeous Gulf waters. Additionally, they will be competing and participating for top awards totaling almost $10,000. It is being sponsored by the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation which was established in 1995 to be a leading advocate of cultural arts in Okaloosa and Walton counties. The foundation also provides student outreach in area schools to inspire kids through literary, performing and visual arts. There will only be a three dollar donation to attend this show which will also feature an outdoor Bistro Court with delicious food, an interactive art area for children and live musical performances. The masterful artwork includes all types of genres including works in acrylics, clay, collage, fiber, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed mediums, mosaics, oils, pen and ink, photography, digital art, pottery, sculpture, textiles, wood and watercolors. Festival parking and a free bus shuttle will be available at the Bealls Department Store near Wal-Mart at the Emerald Coast Center, across the street from the park on the north side of Highway 98. No matter which awesome fall event you are planning to attend along the Emerald Coast, you are sure to enjoy this spectacular time of the year, especially after a long sizzling summer. The weather is wonderful, the rental rates are low and there are obviously lots of fun things to do! E

lucky for you Destin has long been known as “The World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” from its earliest origins. The near proximity of the 100 fathom curve off shore allows anglers here to have the fastest access to deep sea fishing on the entire Gulf of Mexico. Adventurous fisherman catch amberjack, cobia, grouper, King Mackerel, mahi mahi, pompano, redfish, sea trout, snapper, Spanish Mackerel, scamp, shark, tarpon and triggerfish. Trophy fish include classic swordfish, blue fan-finned sailfish, giant mako sharks and cobalt-colored blue marlin. In addition to the Gulf, the Choctawhatchee Bay to the north extends three to five miles across from the mainland. Destin seems like an off shore island since you have to cross a long bridge or a five mile expanse of the National Seashore on adjoining Okaloosa Island in order to get here. The bay has a huge natural abundance of fish including bass, bluefish, croaker, flounder, sheepshead, speckled trout, white trout and more. Choctawhatchee Bay also offers a great harvest of delicious blue point crab and tasty bay shrimp. Captain Leonard Destin took full advantage of this awesome angler location even before The Civil War in the mid 1800s when he founded his commercial fishing enterprise. In 1880, legendary Captain Billy Marler arrived and joined Captain Destin with commercial as well as charter excursions for adventurous tourists. With the help of tourism, the fishing fleet expanded to over 100 boats. By the “Roaring Twenties”, Destin became known as The Billfish Capital of the Gulf of Mexico. This was an amazing testament since, at that time, Destin was a very remote location with bad roads, few bridges, no phones and no electricity! Obviously a lot has changed and now Destin has the largest private charter fishing fleet not only in the state of Florida but on the entire Gulf of Mexico. The first Destin Fishing Rodeo began in 1948, (only one year after electricity was established here), with cash prizes for the largest fish caught in a number of different categories. It has grown through the years and 2012 is expected to have well over 30,000 adventure-seeking participants. Visitors arrive here from all over the nation and several other countries to try their luck. The Destin Fishing Rodeo runs throughout the entire month of October. The length and weight of daily catches from each boat are measured on the docks. It is an adventure by itself just to go down to the marina to witness all the abundance of fish from the gulf, being off loaded and cleaned before weigh ins. Photos are usually taken of each happy crew along with their catch. SOUVENIR MAGAZINE

FISHING RODEO This year’s 64th Annual Destin Fishing Rodeo begins on October 1st and runs daily throughout the entire month with over $200,000 awarded for the largest fish caught in a number of different categories. These include Junior, Teen, Ladies and Senior divisions. Weigh ins will be conducted daily from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm on the Destin Harbor docks behind AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar. Cash prizes are awarded for virtually every game fish including bay catches of King Mackerel, off shore snares of Sailfish or Marlin as well as deep water finds for Grouper and Red Snapper. There will be awards for best daily, weekly and overall catches for 33 species in 29 divisions during the month-long tour nament. Most anglers are on a boat but you may also catch fish from the shore, at the Destin Bridge or East Pass Jetties. A registration fee of $100 is charged to participate in this tournament event on a boat under 26 feet in length. Fees of $200 are paid for privately owned boats 26 to 35 feet in length. Big boats or yachts over 36 feet in length are charged $300

for tournament registration. Please note that those who use a charter fishing boat pay NO fee since they are already included by the captains of these boats as fare-paying guests. Those who use kayaks, canoes or even paddle boards to fish pay a 50 dollar fee and on shore anglers only pay 25 dollars. Juniors under the age of 15 are free. She attended the prestigious Culinary Arts Program at Walnut Hill College in Philadelphia. Her specialties include selections for appetizers, main entrees and desserts. Appetizers include Baby Crab Cakes, delicious mini Chicken Salad Sandwiches or Tenderloin Sandwiches on Blue Cheese Biscuits and Fried Chicken Fingers. There is also a Hummus Platter available as well as her Signature Multiple Cheese Spread infused with horseradish.
Main Entrees, which serve anywhere from six to eight adults d e p e n d i n g u p o n t h e d i s h , includes a wide variety of choices: Lump Crab Cakes, Chicken Breasts with Crab Meat, Chicken Florentine, Chicken Verona, Buckhead 8oz Center Cut Filets, Cheese or Meat Lasagna, Chipotle Lime Tilapia and a Taco Bake Casserole. Since that time, Ocean Reef has become one of the lar gest privatelyowned property rental management companies on the entire Emerald Coast.

Guests can also make special concierge requests for information related to planned weddings, golf outings, fishing excursions, bike rentals, special transportation needs, gourmet catering services, and even baby cribs or high chairs. Amenities also include free rounds of golf, dinner cruises and various complimentary discounts to local venues for all Ocean Reef Resorts guests. A live web cam on the beach across from The Majestic Sun Condominium on Scenic Gulf Drive is available so the “homesick” guests can view our shimmering Gulf of Mexico. Weekly articles and blogs are posted to let visitors know of upcoming events, including interesting anecdotes about Destin’s fascinating history. The professional staff consists of 26 full time employees which includes their sons, Mike and Chris Taylor, who are also part of this enterprise. In addition, Ocean Reef employs 200 part-time staff for housekeeping duties during the spring/summer season. This includes a large laundry operation on site as well as a warehouse area that contains towels, linens and high-end toiletries at the 11,000 square-foot main headquarters that it purchased in Miramar Beach. Despite their hard work, the Taylors are very reluctant to take the credit for achieving part of the “American Dream” through Ocean Reef Resorts. They attribute such success instead to their fine team of staff members and are thankful for God’s blessings. Have you ever wanted to watch a dolphin glide overhead or visit a sunken ship? Its an adventure you’ll never forget. Destin is one of the best dive destinations in the nation! Due to our unique geographic location, deep sea diving is only minutes away from Destin’s East Pass, approximately three miles out into the Gulf. A fantastic natural reef is carved out of limestone, it’s ledges covered with coral and sponge. The reef varies in size from two to over ten feet in height. The total water depth here ranges from 75 to 110 linear feet from the surface. Beautiful whole sea shells cover the sea floor where two varieties of delicious lobsters stroll around. The reef attracts such a huge abundance of tropical fish that they sometimes appear in what looks like rainbow colored clouds. Unlike the Atlantic, water clarity here along the Emerald Coast on the Gulf of Mexico is outstanding. In addition, the water temperatures in the summer hits a comfortable and tropical 80 degrees.

DIVING IN DESTIN
Besides the natural reef in Destin, a man-made artificial reef is located nearby in water depths at 60 to over 100 feet down. This is where a lot of experienced divers go to explore old ship wrecks that have been placed here to attract bait fish, which in turn attracts large trophy fish. There are four Navy vessels here including a Liberty ship, as well as an old tug boat, some airplanes and even parts of the original Destin Bridge! These wrecks and ruins provide mysterious, magnificent underwater scenery. Again, clouds of fish may be seen in all sizes from small tropical beauties to large game fish. The reef attracts the amberjack, cobia, flounder, grouper and snapper that helped name Destin, “the luckiest fishing village in the world.” Dolphin pods and loggerhead turtles can also be seen circling around or floating by. Closer onto the shore at East Pass are the Destin jetties. This is considered “Beach Diving” with depths up to fifty feet down. The rock jetties extend out into the Gulf and are made with natural stone. There are lots of shells

DIVING IN DESTIN here too along with the tropical fish and again large game fish. You may also find Rock Crab here and of course watch the dolphins swim by. They are usually either coming into the Choctawhatchee Bay or swimming out into the Gulf. Snorkeling is very popular here too since the depth of water on the rock jetties is only a foot down from the surface edge. You can take some great underwater photos here and at the other reefs due to the crystal, swimming-pool-clear, emerald-colored Gulf. For beginners as well as experienced, certified divers, there are a few local outfits that provide charter boats, equipment and even instruction so that you may enjoy this wonderful sport. One of the best is Scuba Tech of NW Florida, Inc. in

Destin. They have a professional, certified crew and a forty-five foot dive boat called The Cobra. This spacious craft has a covered dive deck, multiple stair platforms and a comfortable passenger cabin which is heated during the winters. Scuba Tech has packages that start at $30 for 2.5 hours of snorkeling on the Destin jetties for adults, with kids under 12 at $25. The crew will take you to one deep sea dive site for about 2 hours charging $65. A full four to five hour dive trip to two deep sea reefs, including the one with the sunken ships, costs $80. Professional instruction for beginners includes one hour of class time before departing to the Destin jetties, allowing another four to five hours of dive time for $110. Another dive shop in Destin, Emerald Coast Scuba, also provides charter day trips and even some exciting night dives, if you are an adrenaline addict. Their rates are also $80 for around four hours during the day, (that would certainly be MY preference!), or the same rate for about three hours at night. You can visit them online at divedestin.com. Discovery Dive World is another center in Valparaiso, FL which is just across the bay near Ft. Walton Beach. This place is one-stop shopping for all of your diving equipment needs, including wet suits, fins, tanks, weights, masks and, (in other words), the whole works! They are also able to make repairs for you on your own equipment, if need be. Discovery Dive World prides it-

Besides deep sea diving, we are fortunate to also be located near “one of the best and safest fresh water diving destinations in the U.S.” per Southern Diver magazine. A rare jewel of a place called Vortex Springs is only about one hour away, off Hwy 81 just north of Interstate 10 near Ponce de Leon, FL. This public state park resembles a private resort in that you will not believe what special natural amenities await you for a reasonable amount of money. The natural spring pours out 28,000,000 gallons of crystal clear water each
day, with a year-round temperature of 68 degrees. The water goes down almost sixty feet and you can see all the way to the bottom. The ledges of the spring have been tamed with flat ledge rock sides and adjoining patios with pool ladders going down into the water. Picnic tables are available in the surrounding, forested glens. Many come to Vortex Springs just to snorkel but it has a special surprise that attracts experienced divers from as far away as Alaska. The limestone edges cascade down to an entrance that is as big as a garage door. This leads into the cavern which meanders about 100 yards inside and up to 115 feet in depth. There is a white sandy bottom with lots of different freshwater fish, many record breaking in size, including
the rare “shadow bass.” Inside the cavern, bubbles spiral up from the clear, sandy bottom where the spring begins. This makes you think you have shrunk into a manmade aquarium as the strings of bubbles make their way to the surface with an ethereal, tinkling, piano-like sound! Vortex Springs is also known as “the Mecca of dive training.” On site certified trainers provide instruction for one day’s superior, learning adventure for only $60. The cost includes your wet suit, mask, snorkel, hood, gloves, fins, weight belt, tank and regulator. Eden Gardens is a historic, Greek Revival styled mansion that is located on 161 acres of an old family estate in Point Washington near the Choctawhatchee Bay’s southern shore. This was the site of the old Wesley timber plantation that was es-
tablished in 1890. Fine yellow heart pine was harvested here for many years and then floated on barges to Pensacola for sale. In 1897, the thriving business allowed William Wesley to build a 5,600 square foot mansion as a “crown jewel” on the plantation to house his eventual nine children. The valuable yellow heart pine was used for the home’s construction with door frame ornamentation completed in woods of Cypress and Juniper. SOUVENIR MAGAZINE

Originally a tower on the roof allowed Wesley to observe the distant lumber mill and loading docks from the main house. Eden Gardens remained in the Wesley family until 1953. After the death of his beloved wife William sold it to a developer, but sadly the once lively house became vacant. In 1963 Lois Maxon, a wealthy publishing heiress and writer fell in love with it and purchased the estate for $12,500. She then proceeded to spend another million dollars on the property for major renovations to the house and the extensive gardens. The home was converted into an incredible showcase for her antiques and elaborate Louis XVI furnishings. Due to failing health Ms. Maxon donated her beloved Eden Gardens to the State of Florida on Christmas Eve, 1963 in memory of her parents. Today the mansion houses the second largest collection of Louis XVI furniture in the nation and

is a museum. The gracious gardens that surround the house are right out of a romantic storybook. Giant majestic moss draped oak trees line the driveway and meander down towards the water’s edge. Eden Gardens was well named since flowers bloom almost year round. Winters are welcomed by the arrival of Camellias. An amazing assortment of multicolored azaleas herald the sweet scented spring. Magnolia blooms and gardenias signal the approach of summer. Heritage roses and hydrangeas bloom into the fall. Garden trails cover the entire property which also has long green lawns leading down to a gazebo near Tucker Bayou. A large rectangular pool with ornamental Koi fish provides a mirrored reflection of the house itself.  A large outdoor pavilion with both ceiling fans and heaters sits near the gazebo band stand and
can accommodate up to 200 guests. It has a prep kitchen area for setting up catered food that is brought in and also has restroom facilities. Nuptial ceremonies may be conducted at the Wedding Tree, Heritage Rose Garden, The Four Seasons Butter fly Gardens or on the north side of the reflection pool. The grounds have also been rented out and are available for large family reunions, charity events and company picnics. Eden Gardens also opens her doors for Easter Sunrise Services and magical candlelight Christmas tours. The Friends of Eden support this state park with tours of the house every hour on the hour from 10am to 3pm daily except on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays. The Fig Leaf Gift Shop is on site which raises money by selling floral bird houses, various items, seeds and even plantings. A handy garden trail booklet is available at their Welcome Center to help you explore the park. General admission to Eden Gardens State Park is $4 for adults and $2 for kids under the age of twelve. You may walk the grounds, picnic on one of the tables near water’s edge, rest beneath the towering oaks or go fishing from the dock. Leashed pets are also allowed as long as you clean up after them. You can even arrive at Eden Gardens by boat as long as it has a shallow hull, however there is no boat ramp for access. One interesting trivia tidbit is that a one star horror movie called The Frogs was filmed here on location back in 1972 starring Ray Milland, Sam Elliott and Joan Van Ark. Milland’s character is an arrogant, polluting patriarch of a wealthy SOUVENIR MAGAZINE

southern family who decides to celebrate his July 4th birthday at his country estate. Eventually almost every member of his family gets knocked off one by one as snakes, alligators, spiders, lizards, leaches and yes...even frogs, seek their own ecological revenge. As bad as this movie is, it is great fun to watch since the plot is so preposterous. Don’t worry, it was only a movie and we’re sure your own wedding videos will be far tamer on these gorgeous grounds! Ocean Reef (pp.20) has many beautiful homes to choose from, some are on the beach and others are nearby. The largest include the following: Morning Star in Santa Rosa Beach has six bedrooms and six baths with grand gulf views and a private pool; The Big Easy in Seacrest Beach is a four story home with five bedrooms, four baths, an enormous living room and pool; Group Therapy in Santa Rosa Beach is a newer three story home with six bedrooms, five baths, a pool and is great for entertaining; Absolute Paradise, also in Santa Rosa Beach, has five bedrooms, five and one half baths, a 21 x 14 foot pool and is just ninety yards from the

and separate guest quarters near the beach. Two of the bedrooms and two and one half baths are in the guest house. This compound can sleep up to 26 guests.
