This popular event has come to be known as the Kentucky Derby of wine festivals. It will be a picturesque affair complete with white tents, live music, the tasting of hundreds of wines, and culinary treats to pair. Sandestin is one of the most beautiful resorts in the nation and Baytowne’s charm alludes to a theatrical version of New Orleans, making it the ideal place to hold this special kind of event.

Nearly 800 bottles of both domestic and international wines will be featured during the tasting commencing over eighty vineyards from around the world. Retail tents will be nearby with special attendee discounts so purchasing favorites and restocking the wine cellar may be on the agenda. Paula Deen, known the as “Queen of Southern Cuisine” will be this year’s special celebrity guest. This vivacious Southern lady is nationally known for her televised cooking shows, her popular magazine and as the bestselling author of over ten million cook books. She will be hosting a exceptional Southern Lunch at the Marlin Grill on Saturday between 11:00am and 1:00pm at the Marlin Grill. Limited tickets are available for her

wonderful lunch which will include some of her favorite dishes paired of course, with the appropriate wine. You will also have the opportunity to meet with her personally and even have a photo op. Later in the day, Paula will be on the Events Plaza Stage at 2:15 and 3:45pm giving thirty minute cooking demonstrations of her famous Southern cooking. A book signing will also be held for the first lucky 150 petitioners.
For early birds, the festivities kick off on Thursday night as Baytowne Village restaurants including Marlin Grill and Bistro Bijoux will be serving extraordinary dinners complemented by choice wines carefully selected to enhance the true flavor of each meal. Bistro Bijoux is a quaint, French style restaurant that typically features nouvelle New Orleans cuisine in an intimate setting with a wine bar and a fireplace to enhance the ambiance. Marlin Grill is an upscale, resort casual restaurant for fine dining that features fresh seafood and grilled steaks. Both offer outdoor dining areas since Bistro Bijoux has a covered patio overlooking the lagoon and the Marlin Grill has a raised uncovered deck that faces the Village Green. The Grand Wine Tasting events occurs on Friday, April 19th from 5:00 to 8:00 pm and then again on Saturday, April 20th from 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Coastal Living magazine will be hosting a Culinary Pavilion on the Village Events Stage with thirty minute cooking demonstrations by area celebrity chefs. Judges including vineyard owners, food writers and restaurateurs from across the Southeast will evaluate many of the wines presented at the event. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be announced and awarded. These will be bestowed upon domestic as well as international labels that will include Chardonnay, White Burgundy, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Mediterranean White, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux, Red Burgundy, Rhone, Merlot, Malbec, Pinot Noir, Spanish Red, Australian Shiraz, Syrah, Mediterranean Red, Tuscan Red, Veneto Red, Zinfandel, Rose, Champagne, Sparkling Brut, and an assortment of dessert wines.
The Sandestin Wine Festival concludes on Sunday, April 21st at Marina Grill which overlooks the impressive yachts that harbor year round in Sandestin on Choctawhatchee Bay. A Champagne Brunch is hosted featuring a wide variety of delicious, seasonal culinary food offerings. Besides the free flowing champagne, there will also be a “Create your Own” Bloody Mary Bar and live musical entertainment so draw straws to see who the designated driver will be! Besides the “eat, drink and be merry” theme of the Sandestin Wine Festival, it’s nice to know that a sizable donation from all ticket proceeds will benefit a nationally recognized charitable program called The Fisher House. This unique privatepublic partnership supports America’s military and their families in time of need. It recognizes the unique sacrifices made by our men and women in arms who have suffered catastrophic physical injuries or devastating illness and are in need of treatments for rehabilitation. Special housing is provided for the military patients and their families on twenty-three bases and near twenty-one VA Hospitals across the nation. E

illed with your morning go-to drink, you’re alert, and itching to go for your morning run. Since you’re staying on or near South Walton’s scenic 30A, you’ve already noticed its nineteen mile bike path. You could not help but observe how broad views of sandy white beaches, emerald waters, and coastal dune lakes can be seen from nearly the entire path that parallels 30A. Understandably it would be an easy running choice with guaranteed satisfaction. 30A’s path is beautiful, easy to access, and readily available to enjoy. But you’ve done your research and discovered 30A has another runners’ gem to offer - its extensive Point Washington State Forest trail system. The trail system includes eighteen plus miles of beautiful terrain including sandhill, wet prairie, basin and cypress swamps, coastal dune lakes, and wet flatwoods. Through your research you learned you may hear the call of a red-headed woodpecker or spot a bald eagle. Word has it that you may even catch a glimpse of Florida black bear, deer, or wild boar tracks. At this point there is no debate in your mind; you decide you want to experience the real wild Florida. LONGLEAF TRAIL You gear up and decide to hit the Longleaf trailhead beginning off Satinwood Road across from Goatfeather’s Resturant. As you get on this single-track trail you realize things are different here. It’s quiet and serene. It’s just you, nature, and the trail. The experience is overwhelming yet exhilarating. You glance up and discover you are covered by a canopy of trees giving you ample shade. Before you know it you’re in the running zone and have already logged three miles when you come to highway 83, the junction where you continue your run on the Longleaf Pine Trail.
Now it’s starting to get really interesting. You notice that the trail infrastructure varies. Along the contemplative trail, there are wooden bridges that cover parts of coastal lakes and thickets of magnolia trees that intersect with rustic jeep trails. This is when you realize if you aren’t careful you could easily spend a whole day exploring these side trails. Maybe another day, you decide. For now, following the bright orange trail signs is more appealing.

trailing EASTERN LAKE TRAIL After running through fields of prescribed burns, corn lilies, and palmettos you pass right through Grayton Beach onto the Eastern Lake Trailhead where you take a rest, use a latrine, get some water, and check your watch. You’ve already gone eight miles yet the trail has kept you so energized you feel like you just started. As you study the Eastern Lake Trailhead Loop you wonder if you have eleven miles left in you. But the trail has not let you down so far, so you decide to continue. You start down the single track, jump a few fences, cross a few more bridges, then your single track becomes another jeep trail. This jeep trail offers wider views and space for a more relaxing run.
Another two miles in you realize you’ve been in wide open spaces with no shade. You duck into a side single track where the markers direct you to the very eastern end of the loop. Here you notice horse crossing signs and trails. This Eastern Trail Loop then winds you around to the majestic views of Eastern Lake. The trail starts turning back west and you realize you are at the beginning of the loop where you began. You join up with the paved 30A bike path leading you into Watercolor and Seaside.

With fifty years of fishing experience behind him, Captain Brant Kelly is one of the most respected fishermen in the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”, Destin, Florida. Kelly got his start taking private fishing charters on his own boat called The Lady K which he owned and operated successfully for many years.

In 2003, Kelly decided to design and build a new boat which, as he says, was the first of its kind, “built by fishermen, for fishermen.” Two of his deck hands and another friend who was a captain helped him with design ideas and building the boat which he named the Relentless. He fenced off part of the horse pasture behind his house to build it since his crew worked on this project almost every day. It took eleven months to complete the sixty-five by twenty foot boat which was christened for its first fishing adventure in October of 2004. The vessel was the first to incorporate not only state-ofthe-art fishing equipment but also provided luxuries for visiting angler clients that were not found on any other charter boats. In 2011, the United States Commerce

Association named the charter boat Relentless as The Best in Destin. The Relentless has all the latest fishing equipment which includes advanced radar detection, depth finders, current chart mapping technology and what Captain Kelly calls an awesome “fish finding machine.” The design of the boat also redefined luxury in the Destin charter fishing industry giving today’s pampered clientele comforts that meet or exceed expectations. There is a comfortable, full air conditioned galley complete with satellite TV in case that Auburn/Alabama game or other “must see” sporting events coincide with the fishing excursion! It depends upon the season, what’s running and the type of fishing excursion you and your friends desire. Fishing is great here. On a recent trip Captain Kelly said his lucky charter anglers “caught literally thousands of pounds in a cornucopia of fish” which included both Blue and White Marlin which were tagged and released.
