Destin is among the top beach destinations
in the country. Families have returned to the sugar white sun drenched shores again and again for generations. Visiting Destin and the surrounding beach communities almost guarantees the start of a newfound family tradition. Though this town is simply a narrow band of land surrounded by water, it offers a wide breadth of areas, communities and experiences to those lucky enough to visit. Scenic Gulf Drive is a five mile stretch of roadway that snuggles the shores starting in Destin and ending in Miramar Beach. Early visitors of Destin can recall that at one time, Scenic Gulf Drive was the main drag - Highway 98. Now, no longer a traditional highway, this two-lane road offers an experience that draws faithful travelers annually - and sometimes even more often! Scenic Gulf Drive is also home to many Destin transplants - visitors who made the excursion to the pristine white sand beaches and decided to never go home. Even though this slow two-lane drag is only five miles long, there are many developments that have claimed their own following, offering even more options for accommodations and chances to revel in the laid back beach lifestyle and explore Mom and Pop-style businesses. The far western edge of Scenic Gulf Drive dead ends and seeps into the Henderson Beach State Park, an attraction all of its own. Home to over 6,000 feet of natural scenic shoreline that frames Destin’s emerald green waters, this destination includes rustic boardwalks that traverse through scrub oaks, dune rosemary, and sand pines. exploration of the park. Adventure seekers may even opt to spend the night at one of their 60 campsites. Spending some time camping by the beach may be the family outing your kids will remember most. For couples looking for a few romantic nights alone, the start of Scenic Gulf Drive also houses the Henderson Beach Inn. This adult only Bed & Breakfast blends simple charm and grace wrapped in New England-style architecture. Standing proudly on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, this boutique hotel offers a handful of individual-styled room with some hosting fireplaces, balconies, and whirlpool tubs. Many guests take advantage of the beachside tiki bar, offering a complimentary happy hour daily. In addition to the tiki bar, Henderson Beach Inn is home to Beachwalk Café, a full service fine dining restaurant that is open to guests and the public alike. Just a hop, skip and a jump away is Crystal Beach, a nostalgic coastal development that is among Destin’s most sought
after vacation communities. This area is comprised of a slew of stunning beach homes, a handful of condos, quaint white picket lined walkways, and a couple eateries that are not to be missed. Departing Greece in 1910, John Nitsos embarked for America and arrived in New York at the age of 15. Shortly after John met and wed his wife, Ruth, the newlywed couple started their journey South. The ambitious duo established a trail of restaurants, working at one and then moving the operation further south until they ultimately reached Mobile, Alabama. Once settled, John in-
vested in two Gulf Coast beach properties and left it up to Ruth to make the ultimate decision, where to build their vacation home. on the only road that stretched between Destin and Panama City Beach. Many passer-bys would join the family out on the porch and inquire on the couple’s choice to build in such a curious setting. This initial question was quickly followed by a request for a place to stay and enjoy the stunning wide open beaches. John and Ruth, being serial entrepreneurs, quickly noticed an opportunity and decided to establish a beachfront motel. After the opening of the motel, the foundation of the community was set in place. Following the motel, came a beachside camp ground, additional stand alone vacation homes, a restaurant, a miniature
golf course, small scale bowling lanes, an arcade, a pavilion, and an off-thebeach home for the family to use during the busy summer season. This pioneer development offering homes was the first of its kind in the region and needed a name fitting of such a destination. John decided to call this bustling place in the middle of nowhere Frangista Beach, in honor of his hometown in Greece. It didn’t take long for Frangista Beach to become the destination of choice for many travelers from all across the southeast. The Nitsos family continued to manage the development and the initial motel stood proudly for 40 years on the shores

The motel eventually met its demise to make way for the stately beachfront vacation rentals that currently reside and welcome families to the same wide open beaches offered when the development founders first decided to make their claim to the land. Even though the motel and much of the initial development are no longer intact, remnants of John & Ruth’s beginnings add an authentic charm to this premier destination. St Nikolas by the Sea Chapel was John’s last undertaking in the development, one that he never actually got to see in use. Built in 1959 deep within the community on a road currently named Daytona Street, this structure intended as a place of sanctuary and prayerful reflection was completed in the whitewashed style of Santorini, Greece. After a long week of beaching-it on the Gulf of Mexico and a virtually endless parade of seafood dinners and sunburns you’re ready to celebrate. The Fourth of July is certainly the largest and longest fireworks event. 3. For nice soft portraits, the sky being a little overcast is OK. 4. It’s usually best to show with the light falling on your subject. If you choose to shoot into the direction of the light, it’s suggested to utilize your flash. 5. Unless shooting a silhouette effect at sunset, be sure to utilize your flash. 6. Dress appropriately, light colored clothing blends well with the pale tones of the beach. Avoid busy patterns and looks that are too trendy. Your loved ones should be the main focus of the photo.
7. Be prepared for wind, a bit of breeze is typical on the beach. Bring hair ties, clips, or even hats. 8. Powder can really help if you tend to be shiny. Our area is humid on most days. That being said…. 9. Go easy on the make-up. Less is more in natural light. 10. Relax and have some fun! Don’t be afraid to get a little sandy.
