DANG LOCALS By Alabama Charlie

The Emerald Coast is a great place to explore: from the back roads and intercostal waterways to the breathtaking beaches where sunsets are picture perfect. The most thrilling thing about visiting here is meeting the locals and hearing their stories. Locals have the low down on where to go for entertainment; where to eat, where to shop, and where to hang out. These, so to speak, “under the radar” places are also less likely to treat visitors as a walking ATM - or sucker them into gimmicks. A lesson I picked up along the way from all of my illustrious trip taking, is that when I run into disappointment, the town itself is never to blame, rather it’s phrases such as “it’s a must-see” that never seem to meet my standards -which bewilders me when the “mustsee” is noted as a top attraction. Now, I’m I suggesting that every showpiece sight is poppycock, perrish the thought, but it is baffling to me as to why some Continued on Page 66 SPRING 2012 motorfestmagazine.com

ONTHECOVER BABY YOU CAN’T DRIVE THIS CAR What do John Lennon, Ricky Lee Phelps, Wally Youst, and the White Rolls Royce at Bay Front have in Common? The 1964 Silver Cloud Rolls Royce at Bay Front in Pensacola has a good tale behind it… or is it all urban legend? The myth is the Rolls belonged to John Lennon, and at some point the guy who use to own it disappeared; his name was Wally Youst. Ricky Lee Phelps--musician, preacher, painter--turned this 1964 Rolls Royce into his latest work of art. First gaining recognition as the lead singer of Kentucky Headhunters in the mid ‘80s, he turned a fun side job into success, fame and fortune, virtually overnight. The six year ride with the ‘Heads’ produced two albums, a Grammy, an American Music Award, 4 CMA Awards, 1 ACM, and 2 Billboard Awards. Ricky still has a band and has found a new love: producing works of art. Motorfest Magazine decided to investigate this royal Rolls Royce and report the rest of the story. Ricky’s painting above sold it’s very first day on the market… Here for the music, Motorfest’s lovely & talented 2012 spokes person: Kelly Hickman

THE EDITOR DOUBLE DUBS

Genuine, free-range naugahyde

Maybe it was the way the summer ended in 1988. I had just rolled my little VW rabbit, driving up hill, on my way to work one morning. I never thought anything could replace my little thumper, as we called her. Like many, I was in need of basic transportation, but I was in want of a Ferrari or Porsche. From 10

motorfestmagazine.com SPRING 2012

what I fondly recall, I answered a personal ad in the Hartford Current, it read: “Me: a Black, 1981 VW Scirocco, Wolfsburg model, with a solid b-cup shaped instrument cluster, searching for you: a person willing to repair & drive the fenders off of me, in equal measure. Our first date cost me $2100.

We went far together, back and forth to various college parties, weekends in New Hampshire and Vermont…. It was the first car I felt like I could drive around the world. And drive we did: South Carolina for spring break, to New Orleans and back, out to Texas at 135+ mph, and down to UF quite a few times to

visit a certain someone. The little Scirocco handled it all with only a few visits to the car repair beauty parlor. When the Kamei spoiler flew off on the Mass Pike, I cried for 3 days and just couldn’t replace it. We dated for 5 years or roughly 150,000 miles (most of them on the way to, or away from trouble). Finally, when two of her 4 cylinders gave up the ghost on Napoleon Street, Uptown, it was time for us to split up. I met a newer model and she moved way out to East New Orleans. A wise young woman once told me that it’s not the lover you miss when your heart starts to reminisce, it’s the person you were at the time and the situation your life was in. Maybe it was just an average, 1.8 liter hatchback with a 5-speed, but to me, it was amour...

separation KNOW issues BEFORE YOU FLY RVSM - Need to Know

MOTORFEST

NEWS

Do you have what it takes to fly up high? Are you RVSM (Reduced Vertical Separation Minimums) authorized? Is your aircraft? In 2005 FAA introduced RVSM operations to open up more enroute capacity and give controllers and pilots more flexibility in cruising altitudes. As the name suggests, RVSM reduces the vertical separation required between cruising altitudes from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet between Flight Levels (FL) 290-410 (29,000 feet – 41,000 feet). The only catch is that both the pilots, and the aircraft, must be authorized for RVSM operations. The FAA has seen numerous instances of pilots requesting RVSM flight levels or cruising in RVSM airspace without required authorization and/or without using the proper phraseology and flight plan filing practices provided in the Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM). To address this issue, FAA published a new Information for Operators (InFO) to provide guidance to those wishing to use RVSM airspace and to prevent future incidents from those who are not authorized. The FAA hopes this InFO will help avoid potential enforcement actions and prevent possible safety issues.

LIGHTNING HITS THE BEACH It may be Spring Break for many people, but not for the Airmen, Marines and Sailors at the Joint Strike Fighter Integrated Training Center located at the 33rd Fighter Wing, Eglin Air Force Base. The Air Force pilots and maintainers of the 58th Fighter Squadron and 33rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron are in full swing with F-35A launches and recoveries, since March 6; if you are reading this article from Destin’s beaches, look up and you might catch a glimpse of the Lightning II, some 4,000 feet up during frequent flying operations. When it comes to the Marine Corps, they are expected to take flight soon as the VMFAT-501 had their first engine run of the F-35B March 14. The test determines the joint strike fighter’s health and is the first step in moving toward F-35B flights. With the F-35 packing the F135 Pratt & Whitney engine, it touts 40 thousand pounds of

maximum thrust and is the world’s most powerful fighter engine. The F135 has approximately 40 percent fewer parts than legacy propulsion systems, which also contributes to its improved reliability. Not to be outdone, the Navy is onshore and the men and women of the VFA-101 are in high-gear to stand up their squadron in a ceremony May 1, and then they too will travel the high skies in the F-35C anticipated to occur later this year. No matter what their uniform, each day is progress into the next half century of air dominance. SPRING 2012 motorfestmagazine.com

Held every year on the grounds of the Golf Club of Amelia Island and the Ritz Carlton Hotel, some 300 pre 1974 automobiles are picked from many applications to participate in this invitation only event. Bill is also known to create special categories, and this year was no exception (featuring a gathering of Ferrari GTO s to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the model). Not since the last time Ferrari was featured at Monterey have so many of these rare cars been in one place. Overall, 11 of these fine

64\ROLLS

IS LENNON’S (?)

BY THE LIBERTINE

)

Is this EUC 100C?

S IN PENSACOLA To my knowledge the only “one percenter” that can show up at an Occupy rally in a Rolls Royce and get away with it is John Lennon. Since obtaining his driver’s license in 1965, he has owned several cars including a Ferrari, a Mini Cooper, and a Chrysler Town and Country station wagon; but he is most famous for owning a pair of Rolls Royce Phantom V’s.

The first, and most famous was a black 1965 Phantom V with the tag number of FJB111C. In 1966, he had it extensively modified to include a double bed, Sony TV, refrigerator, and a car phone. By 1967, he had grown tired of the factory matte black and commissioned “The Fool”, a team of Dutch gypsy artists to paint it psychedelic.

This proved to be a very provocative act, since a black Rolls Royce was a symbol of stately British dignity. This car’s fame increased in 1985, when it fetched over $2.2 million in a Sothby’s auction; making it the most expensive car in the world. It is currently on exhibition in Vancouver, British Columbia. In 1966, about the time he met Yoko Ono, he purchased another ’65 Phantom V that was previously used in the film, Georgie Girl. Like his other Rolls, it was the traditional matte black; which he had repainted and reupholstered to a pristine white, and equipped with his usual enhancements; which included a distinctive antenna, and possibly a sunroof. The tag number of this car was EUC 100C, and was used by John and Yoko till 1971, when they moved to New York; and it was left behind, along with most of their belongings in England. It was last seen in 1985, when it was withdrawn from an auction at Christy’s in London. From there the tale of this white rabbit is an Alice’s Wonderland of oral histories and urban legend.

The White Rabbit Our part in this tale began a couple of months ago. Former Kentucky Headhunters frontman, and friend of Motorfest Magazine, Ricky Lee Phelps brought us a painting he

had done for charity. It featured two prominent Bayfront Parkway, Pensacola landmarks; a white 1964 Rolls Royce parked in front of Joe Patti’s. When he told us that the Rolls in the painting had once belonged to none other than John Lennon, we immediately made plans to feature this significant vehicle in the next issue of Motorfest, and I took it upon myself to do a story. Little did I know that I would fall right down the rabbit hole! I confess that I love urban legends. Not the chain email stuff that is easily deleted, but the word of mouth, Jan Brunvand kind that never dies, no matter how many times they are debunked. So, I drank from the bottle marked “drink me”, walked through the little door and began my journey.

2638 motorfestmagazine.com SPRING 2012

The journey begins in Pensacola in the most unlikely of places. In February, 2010, a member of the Pensacola Fishing Forum posted a question about a Rolls Royce that had become a landmark on Bayfront Parkway. Apparently, someone had ran a red light, hit it, and they wanted to know the story on this vehicle. Someone responded that they had heard that it once belonged to John Lennon. During the ensuing discussion, several legends were told of it’s origin; but they all had one thing in common: “A friend of a friend of said it was John Lennons”. Enter Australian blogger Sam Umland (www.60x50.com), who attempts to solve the mystery of the fate if UHC 100C, and finds that there are actually three cars claimed to be John Lennons Rolls, including one

owned by none other than legendary record producer and convicted murderer, Phil Spector.

The Cheshire Cat Aug./Sep. ‘04 Pensacola Magazine... There are several legends about the White 1964 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III permanently parked at the corner of Bayfront Parkway and Chase. The most commonly told tale involves former Pensacola businessman, Wally Yost, an real character in his own right. Mr. Yost was owner of Seville Quarter in Pensacola, Church Street Station in Orlando, along with several other properties. He was known to be a collector of Beatle memorabilia, and had acquired John Lennon’s Rolls Royce; which he had on display at one of his clubs. When he

photos by brandie LYNN & Roland Moriarty

could no longer pay his debts, he left the Rolls with Mr. Reeves as collateral on some legal work, then promptly skipped town, never to be seen again. And now the Rolls sits right where he left it, awaiting his return. The truth is sadly less colorful. In the August/September issue of Pensacola Magazine, Mr. Reeves reveals the origin of this well known landmark. According to Mr. Reeves, the car was traded into Pensacola Aviation on an airplane, and he bought it from them. He further states that he used to drive it, but soon found out that the expense of maintaining it was more than he wanted to pay, so he parked it, where it has remained for 20 years. It now serves as a sign of sorts for Mr. Reeve’s law office. What I find amazing is that the legends of John Lennon having owned this car just won’t die; even after repeated debunking. Even as I write this story, there are some on the Motorfest editorial staff that steadfastly believe that it once belonged to John and Yoko. As far as I am concerned, it’s real simple. The car is a 1964 Silver Cloud III with the steering wheel on the left, not a 1965 Phantom V with the steering wheel on the right.

‘Happiness is temporary’

Phil Spector in his 1964 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud

Sources: 60x50.com & pensacolafishingforum.com

The Mad Hatter

Phil Spector, Los Angeles, California... According to a story told by Alan White, former drummer of the Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon gave Phil Spector his white Rolls Royce in 1971. The story goes like this: At the end of the Phil Spector produced Imagine sessions in 1971, John Lennon gives Mr. Spector the keys to his white Rolls as a token of appreciation for the job he did on the album. And, it just happens that Mr. Spector has a white vintage Rolls Royce in his garage. But is it EUC 100C? Apparently not, like the Rolls in Pensacola, it is a 1964 Silver Cloud III; with the steering on the left hand side. In addition, during various interviews over the years, Mr. Spector has never claimed that the Rolls ever belonged to Lennon; though he loves to show off the other gifts that he has received from him.

The Knave of Hearts

Stephen Tebo, Boulder, Colorado... After John and Yoko move to New York in 1971, they apparently bought their last known Rolls, another white 1965 Phantom V, adapted for American roads with the steering wheel on the left. This car is now in the extensive collection of Mr. Stephen Tebo, a Colorado developer; and is on display in Boulder. Of the three contenders, this one is the right model, and was owned by John and Yoko; but is not EUC 100C, which was featured on several album covers.

EAT THE CAKE

As I eat the cake labeled “Eat me”, and climb out of the rabbit hole, we are still left with this question: Where is John and Yoko’s white Rolls Royce tagged EUC 100C? According to most speculation out there in digi-space, it probably never left England, and is patiently waiting in a private collection till the time is right to bring a huge sum at auction. To those who still want to believe that the white Rolls in Pensacola was John and Yoko’s, go right ahead and tell the stories, they add to the local flavor. I will even add one of my own; here it goes…On December 7, 1980, John Lennon parks his beloved Rolls in a parking lot along Pensacola Bay. As he stands there looking at the night sky, an alien spacecraft approaches across the bay from the direction of Gulf Breeze, beams his up, and takes him back to his home world.

Post script: Preparing this story, I watched an episode of “American” Top Gear where Adam Ferrara successfully sells an old Mustang II at auction, by claiming that it once belonged to Eric Clapton.

Kick your ‘12 Bucket List up to the next level Each year, it gets harder and harder to produce a new, unique Bucket List with ideas that top the preceding years. I spend hours dreaming of the “what if’s” as if I could do anything in the world. When my good friend Bob Edwards called and asked me to look at the Citation Mustang, I started thinking about my reachable 2012 Bucket List. It wouldn’t be my first Cessna ... Citation Mustang is an entirely new kind of business jet. One that’s designed - and priced - to bring the dream of jet ownership comfortably within reach of a whole new class of aircraft operators. Ample cabin-class seating, true jet speed and a good half continent of range, come together with a price tag that’s almost a million dollars lower than any comparable aircraft. And above all, it’s a Cessna.

CESSNAMUSTANG In 2012 Cessna Aircraft Company rolled its 400th Citation Mustang off the assembly line at its Independence, Kan., facility. This milestone was accomplished just over five years since the Mustang’s first delivery in November 2006. TThe Citation Mustang is the world’s first fully certified entry-level business jet. The program was announced at the 2002 National Business Aviation Association convention and the aircraft made its first flight in April 2005, received FAA type certificate in September 2006 and celebrated its first delivery in November 2006. Coming in at just over $3 million (2012 delivery), the Mustang features Garmin avionics, Pratt & Whitney Canada engines and boasts a maximum 1,100-nautical mile range. The Mustang’s most common use is corporate business or personal travel. Its second most common use is air taxi service. In growing popularity, the Mustang is also being used for special missions as medical air transport and as an airline flight training tool. “Having the Mustang is a great way to get pilots into a jet for the first time when they get behind the controls, the excitement is written all over their face. Then, when they are ready to move up, the rest of our Citation fleet is right there waiting.

No need to pack lightly Nose and tail-cone baggage compartments provide ample storage for luggage and personal gear. Total external baggage storage volume is a remarkable 57 cubic feet (1.61 m3). Plus, the aft baggage area wall is recessed to accommodate skis. 30

Break the ice. To allow the Mustang to fly into icing conditions, per FAA requirements, pneumatic boots on the leading edge of the wing and vertical fin inflate and break up the ice, to shed ice buildup during flight. With its high-aspectratio wings, sleek contours and graceful T-tail design, the Citation Mustang cuts a dashing figure on any ramp. A true people-pleaser,

extraordinarily high levels of performance and assurance are now available in a jet aircraft costing millions less. Whether it’s a business tool or recreational vehicle, if the Mustang is on your bucket list, it will not disappoint.

AND THE CAPTAIN CHOOSES... By CAPTAIN’S CHOICE BOATS

Sunsation Powerboats has always been known for building a performance boat worth owning. These world-class boats are built in Algonac, MI and are the brain child of Wayne and Joe Schaldenbrand. The boats are offered in 28’,32’, 36’ and 43’ foot sizes and each is hand painted with its own unique

GOOD

look. Your Sunsation will be a one-ofa-kind since no two boats are painted alike. While many manufacturers have come and gone, Sunsation has remained steadfast in building the best power boats around and continue improving their line. While many manufacturers were cutting back, filing bankruptcy or closing up entirely during the worst times in boat sales history, Sunsation Powerboats kept going with their new 36’ that rocked the performance boat world and a plant line expansion to build the new 34’ SportFish. This continued effort was not one of having extra money but a story of blood, sweat and tears along with the love of building a quality product and a few outside people who believed in

SUNSATIONS Sunsation and loved the new & exciting product they produced. Sunsation Powerboats has one of the most satisfied customer bases in the boating industry I have ever experienced and is by far the best boat we have ever sold. While Sunsation may be the smallest manufacturer we deal with, the customer service stands in a league of its own. We are proud to be a Sunsation dealer and even after thirty years of selling boats I still receive a feeling pride every time I show one of their boats and witness the excitement and wonder-

ment from the customer. The Sunsation XRT is a special boat that resembles the cockpit of an aircraft and is a sight to see. The boats are more than just a great boat, each one is a work of art. Now I am sure you reading this thinking well that sounds like a warm sales pitch but I invite you to stop in and see a Sunsation for yourself and you will believe. Better yet say “hi to a Sunsation owner when you see them on the water. They are easy to spot, just look for the boat owner with the biggest smile. You will see for yourself that Sunsation is truly a

Rarely is a work of mechanical art created that immediately evokes the kind of primal, sexual, emotional response that one would have in the presence of a very beautiful woman. For example, when Nuccio Bertone was presented the design plans for Project 112, a new Lamborghini prototype; he immediately exclaimed

“Countach!” a word that roughly translates into “holy crap!”, the word stuck, and the Lamborghini Countach was born. Like the legendary Countach, the motorcycles crafted by Birmingham, Alabama based Confederate Motors tend to evoke the same

response. Dan Neil of the Wall Street Journal called them “Face-melting death machines”. Not to be out done, I thought of “Lovecraftian street monsters”; but, most everyone else I know just says “Oh my God!”at the sight of them. SPRING 2012 motorfestmagazine.com

Unique Bikes from a Unique State…

The prevailing vision of American motorcycling is one of rebellion; conjuring images of Brando, Dean, and Fonda. But, the reality is sadly the opposite. American motorcycling has become synonymous with a single American brand; whose followers wear a uniform of black, adored with “dew-rags” and leather chaps. In 1991, Matthew Chambers founded Confederate Motors, Inc. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to build unique motorcycles “Not for the money, but for the love.” After a short relocation to San Francisco, the company settled in New Orleans; and the first motorcycle was finished in 1994. It took Hurricane Katrina in 2005 to force them to move to a “city built on steel”, Birmingham, Alabama where the company remains to this day.

CONFEDERATECYCLES

Bikes that evoke H.R. Giger‌

When one first views the works of Confederate motors, two things come to mind: The extreme/revolutionary design, and the exotic materials used in the construction. The credit for the revolutionary design of these motorized works of art goes to their lead designer, Ed Jacobs. Mr. Jacobs is based in New York City, where his ideas are committed to digi-space, and transmitted to the production facility in Birmingham. There, computer driven machining equipment turns binary code into living, breathing street monsters. SPRING 2012 motorfestmagazine.com

B120 Wraith (Not currently in production)

The B120 Wraith was the first motorcycle constructed of carbon fiber, and was on display at The Museum of Modern Art from 2009 to 2010. The 2100cc engine coupled with extremely lightweight construction, guaranteed record setting salt flat performance. One notable difference from most other motorcycles is the fuel cell location underneath the engine, instead of on top, providing greater stability. SPRING 2012 motorfestmagazine.com

Though he has said that his designs are influenced by the works of Sun Tzu; but with the very skeletal nature of his work, showing as much of the inner workings as possible; I see the raw, visceral, biologic influences of H.R. Giger.

ENTER The X132 Hellcat… Batman is on the waiting list.

In 2012, Confederate Motors began production of their newest entry, the X132 Hellcat. This motorcycle was described as more of an entry-level production bike than their previous models. But, at a production level of only 24 a month, and a price tag starting at around 45k; this hand assembled beauty is still not a mass produced bike for the masses. It’s basic design is based on “frameless” Confederate Revatio project; where the engine/transmission/crankcase

assembly acts as the main load bearing structure for the whole bike. It sports a 2163cc S&S X-Wedge engine; which along with the transmission and crankcase are housed in single construction machined from a single billet of aluminum. There are also heat resistant glass inserts, showing the inner workings of the engine assembly at various points on the bike such as the air cleaner, oil reservoir, and crank case. The rest of the bike is constructed from either aluminum

or carbon fiber, which results in a 2100cc motorcycle weighing only 500lb. As expected, performance is impressive with a top speed of 150+ MPH. Production began in January with it backordered through June, 2012. So, if you happen to have around $50k burning a hole in your pocket, then you better hurry and get on the list now. So, the question remains, what should one listen to while riding one of these motorized artpieces? Vivaldi, or Slayer…either works.

LIFE IN THE

Most aggressive drivers are 18-26 & male. 56% of men that have road rage on a daily basis 44% of women that have road rage on a daily basis

RAGELANE By BROOKE CALIPERS

Road Rage (noun)- Violent anger caused by the stress and frustration involved in driving a motor vehicle. “%*#!” “%*#!” “%*#!” “%*#!” “%*#!” “%*#!” Don’t be that guy... We all suffer from road rage even if it’s just circumstantial. Nothing is more frustrating than some ignorant driver pulling out into the highway causing you to slam on the brakes to avoid a collision. It’s easy for the most timid to become combative with their two-ton machine as an ally. While most of us enjoy being the alpha dog of the highway and demonstrating our “excellent” driving skills it is important to recognize that although we may find temporarily relief by cursing these drivers, showing them the middle finger, or implementing “corrective maneuvers” such as cut-

48

motorfestmagazine.com SPRING 2012

ting them off to teach these bad motorists a lesson; the consequences of these actions could be far worse depending on the driver they were intended for. According the A.A.A., every year, at least 1,500 men, women, and children are injured or killed in the United States due to aggressive driving. There are thousands of mentally and emotionally disturbed individuals populating our roadways and these motorists are often impaired by drugs or alcohol. These unstable drivers have displayed acts of physical violence through either their vehicle or bare hands in attempts to release their anger. Sometimes these loons strike out for something as petty as a stolen parking space, the inability to pass, or because of an outrage to others frustration. Avoiding becoming hostile on the road can decrease your chances of provoking these extreme road ragers!

Prevent road rage

1. Leave early. Allow yourself an extra fifteen minutes to get where you need to go. You will be less stressed for time and more accepting of others driving. 2. The road is not yours. Be considerate of the people in the car instead of looking at the bad driving as a whole. A person’s driving does not reflect the individual that they truly are. 3. Never drive while emotionally impaired. 4. If you become enraged, pull off the road and calm yourself down. 5. Create a comfortable environment in your vehicle. Play relaxing music and allow fresh air the car. Decreasing your stress levels will help you avoid frustration.

DON’T BE a victim

1. Do not drive in the left hand lane if you do not intend to drive fast or pass. 2. Use your signal and make sure there is ample room when switching lanes. 3. Make sure you accelerate to the speed of traffic. 4. Only use your horn when necessary. 5. Do not tap your breaks when tailgated, switch lanes and let ‘em pass.

Slices of Heaven

IT’s your last meal, Fried Cardiac Arrest On A Plate By Chef Alabamian

The Secrets to Great Fried Chicken: Pan Fry & Brining I believe that two of the secrets to true Southern fried chicken are brining and pan frying in an iron skillet. Brining is the secret that chefs never tell you about. It’s very easy and economical, and requires no special cookware. Fried chicken is easy to make in a cast-iron skillet and the cast-iron skillets are especially good for frying chicken (you can even find some cast-iron skillets called “chicken fryers”).

Ingredients

1 broiler/fryer chicken, cut into 8 pieces

2 cups low fat buttermilk

2 tablespoons kosher salt

2 tablespoons Hungarian paprika

2 teaspoons garlic powder

1 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Flour, for dredging

Directions: Place chicken pieces into a plastic container and cover with buttermilk. Cover and refrigerate for 12 to 24 hours. Melt enough shortening (over low heat) to come just 1/3-inch up the side of a 12-inch cast iron skillet or heavy fry pan. Once shortening liquefies, raise heat to 325 degrees F. Do not allow oil to go over 325 degrees F. Drain chicken in a colander. Combine salt, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Liberally season chicken with this mixture. Dredge chicken in flour and shake off excess. Place chicken skin side down into the pan. Put thighs

1 pound of lard for frying in the center, and breast and legs around the edge of the pan. The oil should come half way up the pan. Cook chicken until golden brown on each side, approximately 10 to 12 minutes per side. More importantly, the internal temperature should be right around 180 degrees. (Be careful to monitor shortening temperature every few minutes.)Drain chicken on a rack over a sheet pan. Don’t drain by setting chicken directly on paper towels or brown paper bags. If you need to hold the chicken before serving, cover loosely with foil but avoid holding in a warm oven, especially if it’s a gas oven. My cardiologist had a heart attack after hearing about this recipe. It is very, very tempting, though. Would the superlatives of this recipe survive if I substitute canola or peanut oil for the lard?

The boat can

I then said, ‘Is that your final answer?’ She didn’t even look at me this time, simply saying, ‘Yes.’ So I said, “Then I’d like to phone a friend.” And that’s when the fight started.

I took my wife to a restaurant. The waiter, for some reason, took my order first. “I’ll have the rump steak, rare, please.” He said, “Aren’t you worried about the mad cow?” “Nah, she can order for herself.” And that’s when the fight started. _______________________________ My wife and I were sitting at a table at her high school reunion, and she kept staring at a drunken man swigging his drink as he sat alone at a nearby table. I asked her, “Do you know him?” “Yes”, she sighed, “He’s my old boyfriend. I understand he took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear he hasn’t been sober since.” “My God!” I said, “Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?” And then the fight started.

dang locals top attractions are nothing more than mere landmarks. It seems as though the white Rolls Royce (front cover) on the corner of Bayfront and Chase in Pensacola is a landmark that has been around forever; I mean, when the parking lot was resurfaced, construction was done around the Rolls. What’s the story behind this? Turn back to page 24 and find out... Is it poppycock or a so called “under the radar” place to visit? Now that Destin tourist season has started, Motorfest Magazine hopes sight-seers enjoy the heart and soul of the local car, boat, motorcycle, and aircraft enthusiasts on the Emerald Coast. Is your motoring on the Emerald Coast worth sharing? If so please tell us about it! Send an email to octane@motorfestmagazine.com with a detailed description of your motoring on the Emerald Coast, along with contact information. You just might end up being featured online or in our magazine.
