2025 Experience Guide

City of Markham Land Acknowledgement

We begin today by acknowledging the traditional territories of Indigenous peoples and their commitment to stewardship of the land. We acknowledge the communities in circle. The North, West, South and Eastern directions, and Haudenosaunee, Huron- Wendat, Anishnabeg, Seneca, Chippewa, and the Mississaugas of the Credit peoples. We share the responsibility with the caretakers of this land to ensure the dish is never empty and to restore relationships that are based on peace, friendship, and trust. We are committed to reconciliation, partnership and enhanced understanding.

Mayor’s Message:

On behalf of Members of Council and the City of Markham, I am thrilled to welcome back the Little Native Hockey League (LNHL)! Last year’s 50th anniversary tournament was a huge success, and this year will be even bigger, with even more teams competing.

It’s an honour for us to host Indigenous hockey players and their families again this year. Markham boasts world-class facilities, including the renowned Pan Am Centre, providing the perfect backdrop for the much anticipate return on the LNHL. We are also proud of our unique partnership with the Eabametoong First Nation and we eagerly anticipate welcoming Indigenous communities from across Ontario.

This event promises to be a showcase of talent, sportsmanship, and the enduring spirit of hockey. Whether you’re a longtime fan or new to the excitement of the game, your presence will add to the electric atmosphere as we come together to celebrate the LNHL.

Let’s unite as a community in the spirit of reconciliation and get ready for an exhilarating display of skills and sportsmanship.

Mayor, City of Markham

Message from LNHL

On behalf of the Little NHL, we thank Mayor Frank Scarpitti, the City of Markham, and Destination Markham for welcoming our First Nation communities from across Ontario for the historic 51st annual Little NHL tournament.

The Little NHL Executive and the Chippewas Tri-Council Host Communities Planning team have been working alongside Markham and Destination Markham for months to ensure that the largest First Nation Hockey Tournament in history provides all attendees the best experience both on and off the ice! The four pillars of the Little NHL are: education, citizenship, sportsmanship and respect and it is in the spirit of these four pillars that we have worked together in true partnership.

This tournament would not be possible but for the vision of the co-founders who in 1971 organized the first tournament to give the children and youth an opportunity to play hockey in an environment where they are welcomed and where they feel they belong.

We are welcoming 276 with a record number of 49 girls teams who will play games in 12 arenas, on 16 ice pads. This year is a record-breaking year as we will be hosting over 600 games in 4 days! It will be an epic and historic event and we could not do it without the generosity of our partners, sponsors and our volunteers.

Message from Destination Markham from the Chair of the Board of Directors

Dear

Esteemed Participants, Spectators, Coaches, and Partners,

As Chair of the Board of Directors at Destination Markham, it is my honour to extend a heartfelt welcome to all of you as we gather in our vibrant city for the 2025 Little Native Hockey League (LNHL) Tournament. Markham is proud to once again host this incredible event, standing in partnership with the City of Markham to celebrate the enduring legacy of First Nations hockey and the deep sense of community it fosters.

The LNHL is more than just a tournament—it is a celebration of culture, resilience, and passion. For more than five decades, this event has brought together young athletes, families, and supporters from across Ontario and beyond, creating lifelong memories and strengthening bonds that extend far beyond the rink. Hockey is a powerful unifier, and this tournament stands as a testament to the dedication, sportsmanship, and pride that define both the players and the communities they represent.

Hosting the LNHL is an honour that we take to heart. Markham is a city that thrives on diversity and inclusion, and we are committed to ensuring that every team, coach, and family feels welcomed and supported throughout their time here. Our world-class facilities, vibrant local businesses, and enthusiastic community are all prepared to help make this year’s tournament an unforgettable experience.

Beyond the competition, the LNHL carries a profound significance—it is a place where young athletes not only showcase their skills but also embrace the values of teamwork, perseverance, and respect. It is a platform for future hockey stars, a space for mentorship and growth, and a moment for all of us to come together to celebrate the strength and unity of First Nations communities.

On behalf of Destination Markham, I extend my deepest gratitude to the organizers, volunteers, and families who make this tournament possible. Your dedication and commitment are what make the LNHL such a special and inspiring event. I wish all participants the very best of luck and encourage everyone to cherish the friendships, experiences, and lessons that this tournament brings.

Enjoy the games, and may this year’s tournament be one to remember!

City of Markham’s Reconciliation Efforts

The City of Markham acknowledges taking action towards understanding Indigenous perspectives promotes reconciliation. We are committed to fostering strong relationships and partnerships with Indigenous communities, and this is evident through our:

City of Markham and Eabametoong First Nation Partnership

• On January 31, 2017, the City of Markham signed a historic agreement of Cultural Collaboration with Eabametoong First Nation, also known as Fort Hope

• Through the agreement, Markham and Eabametoong agree to:

• Promote social, cultural and economic collaboration

• Promote harmony and goodwill

• Increase public awareness

Indigenous Representation

We work closely with First Peoples Group, to ensure Indigenous representation and to seek input for various internal and external City events. Indigenous elders have acted as panelists during staff days, and we have sought their participation in special ceremonies, such as blessing the land before park openings.
