An island unlike anywhere else. Bjärge on Fårö, the island’s largest rauk area, known locally as Digerhuvud.

You notice it the moment you arrive. Something feels different here. A wind of its own. A scent of its own. A way of spending time all its own. Here, you move between sea and city, nature and culture. Between what you planned and what you happen to discover along the way. A secluded bay. A restaurant you did not know you were looking for. A path that leads somewhere completely unexpected. And somewhere along the way, you begin to understand what makes Gotland special. In this magazine, we have gathered experiences both big and small. Places to discover and moments to stay in. For a weekend, a summer, or a little longer. We think you will like it.

5

Visby Some cities you visit. Others stay with you. Visby is the latter. There is something about the light against the limestone. Sea air drifting through the rooftops and alleyways. The whispers of history in the narrow alleys. And the best part? Visby doesn’t fade when summer ends. Visby is very much alive. All year round.

Small town pace, big city feel Visby is perhaps best known for its medieval city wall. And yes, the Visby city wall is just as powerful in February mist as it is in July sunshine. But inside the wall, there is more than legendary history. Life here moves at a pace that feels just right. You can start your day with coffee at a small café where the barista knows your name, or at least your order. Work for a few hours with a view over the rooftops, then wander on to a little shop full of things you never meant to buy, but somehow leave with anyway. All the things you do in other cities, of course. The difference? Here, you pass ruins and rose-covered limestone houses from the 13th century along the way. At Stora torget, the summer buzz gives way to that soft stretch between autumn and winter. Beneath the red glow of heat lamps, with views of the ruins of St. Karin’s Church, the outdoor restaurants remain an obvious meeting place. When autumn turns to winter, it is easy to understand why Christmas calendars have been filmed here. With the old houses lit beneath a sky of Christmas lights, and festive voices drifting from the 800-year-old cathedral, that eternal question fades away: “What do you do in the low season?”.

The sea. Even when you cannot see it, you can hear it In Visby, the sea is as much everyday life as it is a beautiful view. On a clear January day, you can take a brisk walk along the promenade as the fresh air nips at your cheeks. In summer, salty swims and late evenings await as the sun slowly settles into the Baltic Sea. In between, there are storms that send the waves crashing dramatically against the shore. When the storms roll in, the sea puts on its own show. Along the shore stand the towers and gates of the city wall, silent witnesses from the Middle Ages. Built to protect the city in times of war, they are now symbols of survival and even romance, with Kärleksporten as Gotland’s timeless Don Juan, charming both visitors and locals.

8

Did you knowof that Visby is one ost Sweden’s m cked restaurant-pa cities? Gotland on the menu Gotland has flavour. And Visby serves it. Here, the ingredients are genuinely local: lambs that have grazed in the sea breeze in the same way for hundreds of years, early vegetables grown in lime-rich soil, truffles hidden where you least expect them. The restaurants are small enough to feel personal and ambitious enough to rival any big city. That is how Visby works: quality without fuss. A Wednesday evening in November can be just as natural for a long dinner as a Saturday in July. The only difference is that your favourite table is easier to get.

Where past meets present History is not something shown only behind glass in a museum. It is built into the walls, the cobblestones and the pace of the city. As one of the best-preserved medieval towns in the Nordic region, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, Visby carries its heritage with ease. But it is not dusty. It is alive. Modern life moves naturally through centuries of history A laptop flips open beneath a 13th-century arch. Techno beats pulse from inside a ruin. Prams roll across cobblestones worn by centuries of footsteps. Everywhere, Gotlanders leave modern traces in a historic setting. But the contrast between then and now isn't a clash – it's a happy marriage.

9

The side of Gotland many never see There is a stubborn myth that Gotland closes when the last summer guest goes home. Anyone who says that has not been here in October, when the town feels like one of the world’s bestkept secrets. Or in December, when children go sledding beside the city wall. Or in April, when the whole island seems to hold its breath before another high season and everything feels possible. Visby is smaller than many other towns. Perhaps that is exactly why it is so impressive how much fits inside it. Everyday life and celebration. Stillness and energy. History and future, all within walking distance. And perhaps that is the secret: you are never quite finished with the city. There is always a new alley to turn into, a new corner to discover, a new reason to stay a little longer. It is as if city life moves to a different rhythm here – slower, calmer, closer to the sea. And that feeling? It has to be experienced.

Outdoors & Nature Gotland’s dramatic landscapes and coastal climate were made for outdoor life. From rugged coastlines to open landscapes, the island offers endless ways to experience the outdoors – sometimes peaceful, sometimes challenging, always beautiful.

Södra Hällarna, south of Visby, offers spectacular views and challenges for cyclists.

CYCLING IN A DRAMATIC SETTING Cycle with the wind in your face or at your back along the 800 km coastline, or meander along twisting country roads through whispering woods, among rustling forests, and shimmering fields. If you prefer an electric bike, level ground and no more than a ride to the nearest pub or beach, that works too. When all said and done, Gotland is a cycling island, and has been for a very long time.

19

Equestrian pursuits are popular on Gotland.

PARADISE FOR HORSES – AND RIDERS Gotland is said to have more horses per square kilometre than any other part of Sweden. SCENIC RUNS Run along sandy beaches at dawn, through cobbled streets and across rolling landscapes. Whether you are after a slow morning jog or a proper workout, few places rival Gotland when it comes to scenic runs.

A mix of sweet and salty Are you one of those people who can let an entire summer pass without a single swim? Or are morning, lunchtime and evening dips sacred annual rituals? Whatever type you are, there are Gotland bathing spots to match your mood and whether you love cold swims or prefer something gentler.

For the extended family

For those who wanted a charter holiday

Sand between your toes, sand in your food, sand on the blanket, sand in the bag and sand absolutely everywhere. But the happiness? Total.

So, no exotic paradise island with a piña colada in hand this holiday either. Or? Slather on the sunscreen and fasten the bum bag. This is about as abroad as it gets.

Tofta beach Gotland’s most classic beach: shallow, sandy and full of life. Perfect for sandcastles, sun worship and carefree, possibly slightly louder, swims. Sudersand, Fårö Like a Swedish version of a paradise beach. Chalk-white sand, clear water and enough space for the whole family without the small bickering starting immediately.

Blå lagunen The celebrity that needs no introduction. Turquoise water in an old limestone quarry. You will not get closer to the Mediterranean unless you are actually in the Mediterranean. Follingbo quarry Crystal-clear water and dramatic rock walls. Bring a luxurious picnic and suddenly feel far from everyday life.

For the water sports lover

For cold-water skeptics

When others complain about the wind, it turns into a perfect day for you. Tip: consider wearing a wetsuit even in high summer.

You like swimming, absolutely. But do you like freezing? No, thank you. Nothing wrong with that. When even the quarries feel too cold, there are naturally warmer, more reliable options.

Skalasand, Fårö A little wilder, a little windier and perfect even in the toughest gusts. Here it is all about kites, waves and refusing to just lie stilll. Gnisvärd Charming, small-scale and perfect for wind and water sports. You can head out yourself or stand on shore, watch and look as if you are just about to go in. No judgement.

Vidhave pool and beach, Visby When the waves are not quite tempting, there is a sun-warmed pool right by the sea. Glide in and out of the water as if you were at a tropical resort. Minus the palm trees, plus Swedish summer.

32

For long lazy beach days

For the photo enthusiast

No one benefits from interrupting a winning concept. Beach village, beach restaurant, beach hangout. Here, you do not need to go home until the sun has gone down. This is what Swedish summer should feel like.

For those who would rather look at the water than actually dip their toes in it.

Ljugarn Gotland’s own holiday classic. Made for lazy summer days. Salty swims alternate with long lunches, ice-cream breaks and evenings that never quite end. Björkhaga beach Child-friendly, calm and surrounded by nature. This is where you go to truly relax. You come for a swim, stay for the stillness and suddenly wonder why you are ever in a hurry.

For the daredevil The higher, the better. The typical Gotland harmony may need a pulse-raising jump now and then. Smöjen quarry Raw, barren and perfect for cliff jumping. Not for those afraid of heights, but magical for adrenaline seekers. Sigvalde träsk A diving tower in the middle of nature. Test your courage before landing in freshwater.

For the picky swimmer

Farnavik, Fårö Rauks, sea and dramatic views. You barely need to try. Every photo looks like a postcard. Warning: your camera roll may overflow. Bästeträsk Mirror-calm water surrounded by wild nature. Perfect for early mornings, mist over the surface and the kind of photo you will show everyone, whether they asked or not.

For the nature lover Does life as a marsh troll sound strangely appealing? Of course. Nature, harmony and zero pressure to perform sounds lovely. Just like these bathing spots. Tingstäde träsk Calm, peaceful and often free from crowds. Come here for stillness, birdsong and zero notifications. Fardume träsk A hidden gem with clear water and a close-to-nature feel, like stumbling upon your own little paradise.

33

Swimming belongs to summer, but there are limits. These spots are excellent if you like the idea of swimming, but not in just anything, meaning algae and other slimy things. Toftagropen No algae, no mess, just crystal-clear water. Even the most demanding swimmer can relax here. Hejdeby quarry The quarry version of an infinity pool. Clean, clear and almost suspiciously perfect.

For those seeking solitude No facilities, no problem. Träkumlagropen A little Gotland secret glimpsed from the road. Few parking spaces, but dogs are warmly welcome. Perfect.

SMALL CHANGES. BIG DIFFERENCE. Although we are surrounded by water, water shortages on Gotland are a recurring summer challenge. A little extra thought can help Gotland’s water supply go a long way, and it only takes a small drop of effort.

A SHOWER, OR A DIP?

1

A shorter shower has a big effect. Two minutes less in the shower makes a bigger difference than you might think, especially when many people do the same. Or even better: take a dip in the sea. Brackish, fresh and pure Gotland spa feeling.

2

DON’T LET IT RUN Standing and watching a running tap is about as exciting as watching paint dry. So turn off the water while brushing your teeth or shaving.

3

LET GO OF PERFECTION Yellow lawn? Dusty car? That is part of summer on Gotland. Collect rainwater when you can. Nature is happy to help with the watering.

34

WASH SMARTER, NOT MORE

4

Many garments do perfectly well with a little airing, just ask any denim lover. And when it is time to wash clothes or dishes, choose a shorter programme. It saves water, energy and wear on your things.

5

DO NOT GO WITH THE FLOW

The water system is under the greatest pressure when many people use a lot of water at the same time. Clear peaks during the day are morning, 06:00 to 09:00, and evening, 17:00 to 21:00. Try showering, washing dishes or doing laundry in the middle of the day or later in the evening instead. It evens out the pressure and makes a big difference overall.

CHILL IT IN THE FRIDGE INSTEAD Running the tap until the water gets cold may seem harmless, but it quickly adds up. A simple solution: fill a jug and put it in the fridge. Then it is cold and ready straight away.

35

Seasoned Gute, long-time Gotland visitor or simply drawn to unusual destinations? Beautiful Fårö may be the classic detour, but it is far from the only one. Around Gotland lie islands that function as small worlds of their own: more secluded, more exposed to the weather and more on nature’s terms. You do not end up here by chance. You plan, wait for the right season and accept that the logistics are part of the experience.

Beyond the Island

Area: approx. 2.5 km² Visit: Mainly spring and early summer, when guillemots and razorbills nest on the cliff ledges. Bring: Binoculars. And sturdy shoes. There are paths, but they are a little weather-beaten. Getting here: Boat connection from Klintehamn during the season, about 30 minutes across open water.

Stora Karlsö Just west of Gotland, Stora Karlsö rises from the sea, a steep limestone island with a long history of hunting, fishing and nature conservation. Today, the island is a nature reserve, known for its bird colonies and dramatic coastline. Come here and look around. Wherever you turn, there are sea views.

36

Lilla Karlsö

Gotska Sandön

Lilla Karlsö is Gotland’s wild little sister. The island is made up of limestone cliffs and a landscape shaped by Gute sheep that have grazed here for thousands of years, since the Bronze Age. Lilla Karlsö is also one of Sweden’s only bird cliffs, with thousands of gulls and other seabirds nesting on the rocks. Sometimes you may even spot seals lazing at the shoreline.

Far to the north, isolated in the middle of the Baltic Sea, lies Gotska Sandön. The island consists largely of sand, just as the name suggests, pine forest and open dunes. There are no roads in the usual sense and no permanent population, only the nature reserve’s infrastructure and temporary visitors. It is a place for anyone drawn to total stillness, long distances and a clear horizon.

Area: approx. 1.6 km² Visit: May to August, when guided tours are available. Bring: Camera, packed lunch and sunglasses. The glittering sea is as dazzling as it is beautiful. Getting here: Boat trip from Klintehamn, about 20 minutes of seal spotting.

Small islands, big adventures If you want more adventure and fewer tourists, there are several small islands around Gotland just waiting for your own boat, kayak or perhaps a very long swim. Joking aside: Enholmen, Asunden, Heligholmen, Skenholmen, Ytterholmen, Östergarnsholm and Utholmen. These islands are like Gotland’s secret rooms: quiet, untouched nature, sandy beaches that look like postcards and birds that stare at you with curiosity. But remember: there are no cafés and no ice-cream kiosks here. Just nature and you. Safety equipment and a weather check are essential, otherwise it may become much more exciting than planned.

37

Area: approx. 36 km² Visit: Late summer and early autumn for fewer visitors and a calmer pace. Bring: Thermos, extra layers and respect for sudden weather changes. Getting here: Boat from Fårösund or Nynäshamn during the season. The journey takes 2 to 3 hours and depends on the weather.

A new journey on och between Gotland and the mainland vation What will a journey to Gotland look like in the future? Gotlandsbolaget has a long tradition of developing and modernising its fleet. With Gotland Horizon X, another step is being taken in the continued development of ferry traffic. Gotland Horizon X is a 130-metre high-speed catamaran that will be one of the largest of its kind when delivered, and will be used in traffic between Gotland and the mainland.

Capacity in line with demand On board there will be room for up to 1,500 passengers and 400 cars. Crossing times will be in line with today’s traffic, which means the journey will remain an efficient way to travel to and from the island, even during periods of high demand. The propulsion system is based on gas turbines and prepared for so-called multi-fuel operation. This means that Gotland Horizon X can run on different fossil-free fuels and, over time, be adapted for hydrogen as technology and availability develop.

A step in a larger transition Gotland Horizon X is one of several steps in Gotlandsbolaget’s work to reduce the climate impact of traffic. The goal is climate-neutral crossings by 2045. There is also a clear focus on reducing the footprint during the construction process. Large parts of the hull are made of aluminium with a significantly reduced carbon footprint, produced through energy-efficient processes and with a high share of renewable electricity. Gotland Horizon X is planned for delivery in 2028 and to enter service the following year. The vessel will be used for most of the year and will become an important part of the continued development of Gotland ferry service.

Whatever happens above ground, another world awaits down here. In cool, quiet darkness, a magical place opens up, filled with stalactites, fossils and winding passages, shaped by nature over thousands of years.

The magic begins underground 40

How far do you dare to go? All tours are guided, and most visitors choose the regular tour, which lasts about 30 minutes. For the more daring, there is the Cave Adventure, which begins where the regular tour ends. The equipment included hints at the kind of experience ahead: overalls, wading boots, knee pads, gloves, helmet and headlamp. You move forward by walking, crawling, wading and even taking a small boat. There are also special children’s tours where the adults kindly wait outside. For those who are not afraid of the dark, there is also a darkness tour, where the entire cave is switched off and explored only with torches.

41

The adventure continues above ground In addition to the cave itself, there are many surrounding activities that make it easy to spend several hours in this scenic place. Here you will find adventure golf, a playground, nature trails, barbecue areas, a park and a cosy café with a souvenir shop. The café serves salads, fika and drinks, as well as the house speciality: waffles. Do not miss Lummelunda Cave, one of Gotland’s most exciting attractions.

BRING A PIECE OF GOTLAND HOME Gotland is more than beaches and rauks. There is also really good shopping here. In Visby, small personal shops sit alongside well-known favourites. Beyond the city wall, even more gems await: farm shops, flea markets and local craftspeople with unique finds you will not discover anywhere else. What will you take home this time?

Where history feels present

When visiting Gotland, you step into a journey through time. Since the Stone Age, people have lived, worked and left their mark on the island. Visit ancient ruins or Bronze Age stone settings and you are standing in the very places where generations once shaped their lives – and the future.

Middle Ages (1 050 – 1 500) International trade was booming and shipping was on the rise. In the 12th century, the Viking port of Visby is the island's commercial metropolis. A lot of foreign merchants move in. The Hanseatic League – a trade confederation between merchants in the Baltic Sea region – and low taxes make Gotlanders rich. This meant, among other things, that it was possible to build magnificent merchant houses in Visby and that the farms in the countryside were stately. At the end of the 13th century, Visby residents built the city wall to shut out the farmers. The divisions between city and country lead to a civil war on Gotland in 1288.

In 1350, the plague, or “black death” ravaged Gotland. A third of the island's population perished and eleven years later Danish King Valdemar Atterdag conquered Gotland in a bloody battle. Danes, Teutonic Order Knights and Nordic Union kings alternated through positions of power. Visborg Castle was founded by Danes in the 15th century. Denmark handed Gotland over to Sweden with the Peace of Brömsebro in 1645. Then the Danish military returned once again. They destroyed Visborg Castle before leaving the island in 1679. Facts from: Gotlands Museum Fornsalen, and Region Gotland.

During the period 1200 – 1350, most churches were also built. Every parish needed to have a stately church.

48

The 18th century to today Much of what characterises Gotland today, with tourism and travel in focus, has its roots in what was happening in the 18th and 19th centuries. Many of the island's resplendent buildings from that time are still around. Travel to and from the island has long been of importance. Did you know that steamboats traversed the Baltic carrying travellers longing for Gotland as early as in the 19th century? And that during the Second World War, casualties were shipped here to receive care at what was the most modern hospital at the time? The 18th century saw an upswing in trade and commerce, resulting in a rise in construction. The number of homes in Visby doubled. They were built of stone to reduce the risk of fire and to preserve the forest. Many of the old packhouses were refurbished. In around 1785, Visby had more than 5,000 residents and was the fifth largest city in Sweden. In 1808, during the Finnish War, Russia occupied the island, but the Swedes came to the rescue and took it back. During the 19th century, Gotlanders began to care for and preserve their ruins, including the wall surrounding Visby. And Visby became one of the most popular tourist destinations in the entire country.

49

During the Crimean War in 1853, a great number of British sailors became afflicted with cholera and were buried at the English cholera cemetery on Fårö. At the end of the 19th century, Visby became a shipping port for increased industrialisation. All rail lines that were built had Roma as their starting point. Until the end of the 19th century, fishing was a common way to supplement income obtained through agriculture, which is seen in the fact that many small fishing villages were built. With the increase of commercial fishing in the 20th century, a great number of buildings in the villages were abandoned. In the late 19th century, Gotland was a budding tourist destination for the well-to-do. Ljugarn was Gotland’s first seaside resort. The first commercial steamboat traffic from Visby to the mainland was started in 1866 by Ångfartygsbolaget Gotland, later Rederi AB Gotland. In 1878, the first passenger trains traversed the stretch between Visby and Hemse. Eventually, Burgsvik in the south and Lärbro in the north were included.

In the mid-1900s, a limestone quarry was established in Slite and a sugar mill in Roma. Loads and loads of limestone and sugar beets were transported by rail. During both World Wars, the military had a very strong presence on Gotland. Significant parts of Gotland were therefore closed to foreign tourists during the entire century and a couple of years into the 21st. Between the years of 1939 and 1946, Lärbro war hospital was the most modern hospital in all of Sweden. Here, refugees, capitulated soldiers and concentration camp victims from the horrors of the Second World War were cared for. The war hospital was later converted into a penal institution. In 1944, the Hansa Catastrophe occurred when the Gotland passenger boat SS Hansa was hit by a Russian torpedo and sank. Eighty-four of the eighty-six people on board perished in what was the greatest seafaring catastrophe in Sweden since the 17th century. During the 1950s and 60s, many of the smaller limestone quarries were shut down. Large-scale operations were the new thing. Some of the discontinued quarries are now popular swimming holes.

50

In 1968, Almedalen Week was instituted when then Prime Minister Olof Palme held a speech from a lorry flatbed near Almedalen. The year 1991 saw the first time that all Swedish political party leaders participated in what is now a traditional event. Visby was named a World Heritage City in 1995. In 2003, the new high-speed ferries from Visby to Oskarshamn and Nynäshamn became operational. In 2019, Destination Gotland started using new, LNG-powered vessels, which have great environmental benefits. LNG stands for Liquefied Natural Gas. At the end of the 19th century, a journey over the Baltic in the steam ships of the time took 13 hours. Today, the same journey takes about three hours in comfortable high-speed ferries. Lucky for those of us who love to travel to Gotland!

Swedish celebrities such as Astrid Lindgren's beloved character Pippi Longstocking and director Ingmar Bergman have contributed to the culture that reflects Gotland's multifaceted environments. Beaches, limestone quarries and Visby's charming, cobbled alleys have been the backdrop of many films and TV shows. At times, it feels as if the whole island is a scene for different kinds of cultural expressions. Many esteemed Swedish crime writers use Gotland as the stage for their murders and eerie happenings. Thankfully, real life on the island is safe, but don't be surprised if you happen to end up in the middle of a film shoot during your visit. And if you hear sweet music drifting out of a ruin, chances are there's a concert going on. Many of the island's stages are open-air, or housed in atmospheric barns – like Stelor and Gåsemora. There are cultural expressions worth discovering around the island – small galleries, studios and art workshops. Look for signs marked “Öppet” (open), stop by and allow yourself to explore. You never know what artistic treasures you’ll uncover in Gotland’s thriving cultural community.

Travel to Sweden and Gotland Ever since the Stone Age, shipping has connected Gotland with the mainland and the rest of the world. It flourished during the Viking and Middle Ages and Visby was a popular trading town in the Baltic Sea region. In 1865, when Ångfartygsbolaget Gotland started up winter traffic to the mainland, a journey took around 13 hours (compared to just over three hours nowadays). Prior to that, passenger traffic was run using paddle steamers that could not handle ice. Rederiet, which is the world's oldest passenger shipping company, became Rederi AB Gotland, of which, Destination Gotland is a subsidiary.

Flights

There are currently two commercial ways to get to Gotland, by ferry or plane.

Ferries Between the mainland ports of Oskarshamn and Nynäshamn, traffic to Visby is daily. The crossings take just over three hours. There are various seating options aboard the ships as well as cafés and restaurants. Naturally, pets are welcome on board the ship's pet decks and compartments.

Visby Airport is 3.5 kilometres from Visby city centre. There are daily flights between Visby and Stockholm as well as to other destinations. For up-to-date travel information, see: swedavia.com/visby.

CURRENCY AND PAYMENT In Sweden, the currency is Swedish kronor (1 krona = 100 öre), though cash is rarely used in Sweden nowadays. Cards are widely used across Sweden. Many shops and eateries are “cash-free" and will not accept cash. In fact, most banks in Sweden are also “cash-free", but there are still a few ATM machines in major cities, often charging an additional fee. To pay with a card or withdraw cash in Sweden, you need a card with chip and PIN. Older credit cards with a magnetic strip will not work. Traveller's cheques and other checks are often difficult to both pay with and redeem. Swedish citizens also have the opportunity to pay with the Swish app, a payment app in which most Swedish banks collaborate.

PHONE AND WIFI The number to call in an emergency is 112. Sweden's country code is +46. On Gotland, the phone number of those who still have a landline starts with (0)498. Most people nowadays have smartphones and there are several operators in the country. WiFi is widespread and easy to connect to. On some parts of Gotland, mobile phone and WiFi coverage can be spotty.

LANGUAGE Swedish is the official language of Sweden. There are several recognised national languages in the country and many dialects. Gotland is home to a local dialect called Gotländska. It originates from Gutamål derived from Old Gutniska. Some Gotlanders can speak it, but it is difficult for most other Swedes to understand them.

57

SEASONS There are four seasons in Sweden. Gotland belongs to the part of the country that has mild winters and warm summers compared to many other parts of the country. December – February. Winter in Gotland does not generally see much snow, though occasionally enough falls that children can go sledding on the moat adjacent to the Visby City Wall. In winter, the sun rises late and goes down early, allowing for beautiful starry skies and the occasional sighting of the Northern Lights on the island. March – May. Spring on Gotland is characterised by the return of daylight and with it, blooming flowers and chirping birds. Still, chilly winds can sweep across the island. It is said that before the warmth of spring can be trusted, the island needs to see seven low pressure systems since the first starling appeared back on the island. June – August. Summer on the island is the time of spectacular flora and foliage. Most visitors come to swim and visit the beaches found around the island. The average daytime temperature is between 18 and 21 degrees Celsius and Gotland is usually among the top “sun-drenched” destinations in Sweden, boasting many hours of sunshine in the summer. September – November. The autumn in Gotland is ideal for those who like to be out in nature, hike, cycle or take a late summer dip in the warmed-up waters of the Baltic Sea. There are local festivals celebrating the harvest, and later in the autumn, the island’s “black gold” is celebrated during Gotland truffle month and the truffle festival.

By the beach, in a rural idyll or inside the World Heritage Site? A cottage surrounded by nature. A historic hotel inside the city wall. Or perhaps somewhere by the sea. Or do you want to be part of Visby’s medieval mystery and stay in a historic building where every corner has its own story to tell? Perhaps you want to wake up to the sound of waves and start the day with sand between your toes and sun on your face. Whatever kind of trip you want to take, whether it is for calm, adventure or a deep dive into history, there is accommodation on Gotland to suit your plans. Where do you want to check in when it is time to check out from everyday life?
