BOONVILLE HERITAGE PARK Where Brazos County Began Before “Aggieland” and Historic Downtown Bryan, there was a bustling frontier town on the Brazos Valley’s rolling prairie: Boonville. This agricultural community was founded in 1841, when the Republic of Texas appointed six men to scout out a new county seat. They landed on a plot of land near El Camino Real, and named it after one of the six men on their committee: Mordecai Boone, the nephew of Texas folk hero Daniel Boone. By 1850, Boonville had a town square, a courthouse, and was often an overnight stop for travelers. It was a booming settlement, and Sam Houston himself even gave speeches at the courthouse. Notable residents included Harvey Mitchell, Father of Texas A&M University. Mitchell was one of the first paid teachers in the area, and spearheaded the effort to secure the land for what is now Texas A&M. Boonville’s decline began in 1861, when the Houston and Texas Central Railway extended from Millican to Bryan, and residents began moving closer to the railroad. In 1866, residents voted to move the county seat to Bryan.

TEXAN THINGS TO DO
MUST-SEE IN BRYAN
Whether it's your first time in Texas or you're a lifelong Texan looking to deepen your roots, a legendary Lone Star State experience is waiting for you in Aggieland.
First stop: Historic Downtown Bryan (pg. 20)! Experience what truly makes Bryan a legend reborn. Buildings like The LaSalle Hotel, The Palace Theater, and The Carnegie History Center date back to the early 1900s and have been revitalized for modern-day use. Two of the most recent renovations are The Kimbell Cultural Event Center (located in the former Kimbell Supply & Feed Store) and Bojo Coffee Co. in the historic Ice House on Main.
First, head to Jesse’s Taqueria for breakfast (quite possibly the only way to start mornings as a taco-lovin’ Texan). Then head over to Boonville Heritage Park (pg. 16) for classic bluebonnet photos and a history of the Brazos Valley’s humble beginnings. Don’t miss barbecue for lunch (list on pg. 8). After lunch, visit Messina Hof Estate Winery for a tour and wine tasting. This is one of the first (and most award-winning) wineries in Texas!
FAMILY FUN Start your weekend off with First Friday in Historic Downtown Bryan, where you’ll find live music, activities for all ages, and local artists around every corner. Catch a movie at The Queen Theatre, or head to The Palace Theater for live music in an open-air setting. The next morning, head to Sunbeam Bagels and enjoy breakfast on the patio while watching trains go by. Next stop: Aggieland Safari, a drive-thru adventure where you can feed zebras, llamas, bison, and other wild animals. Grab lunch at Shipwreck Grill, a locally-owned restaurant shaped like a boat, and then swing over to TopGolf for a memorable golf competition. The Break Room is also a fun afternoon option with a paint splatter room, VR, and a “rage room”. Wind down the day at The Grove, a biergarten that has a bounce house and ample space for the kids to play. Before leaving town, stop by The Wild Grain Cafe for breakfast and then make your way to Lake Bryan (pg. 18) or Great Escapes. Lake Bryan has walking trails, paddleboarding, and kayaking, while the Great Escapes day pass gives kiddos access to play on the “Wibit”, a floating water obstacle course.
