1. Introduction from the Head Dear Luckley Parents and Pupils
I hope that the information in this guide will be helpful, reassuring and informative. My aim will be to host the majority of the information you will need to access Luckley Online in one place for ease of reference. The content of this guide will grow and change as our offering increases, with updates being sign-posted in the table of contents. Do just click on the relevant heading to be taken to new content. We have given much thought and care to how Luckley Online will operate this half term, reflecting on our past experience and always aiming to provide the best possible online school for our pupils. Luckley Online will include live lessons, recorded content, clubs and activities, special events and guest appearances. The main platform we are using is Microsoft Teams, which pupils and staff are now familiar with. Teams will allow us to hold live lessons, upload recorded content, allow access to OneNote and host a variety of resources. You may find that our visiting speakers will ask to use Zoom and, on those occasions, separate event details will be sent to you. Luckley is about more than academic lessons and the pastoral care of our community remains central to what we do. Pupils will have regular contact with their tutors and Heads of Year and of course, we will continue with our Monday assemblies. The school counsellor is also available if needed. At the mid-point to half term, on Wednesday 27 January, we held a wellbeing day. This was an opportunity for us all (pupils, parents and staff) to take some time to reflect and rejuvenate body, mind and spirit. My thanks to Mr Vallance for putting the day together, we received fantastic feedback and will be looking to do something else in the summer term. We aim to keep Luckley connected through lockdown and I sincerely hope that parents and even members of our extended family will join in with many of the events we have planned in the coming weeks. I am very open to hearing your good ideas on events and activities that might bring us together, albeit virtually. The move to Luckley Online, unescapably means more time in front of a screen, so I really do encourage our pupils to ensure they read, exercise and make time to relax and find balance. This remains a time of uncertainty for our exam groups, we share your frustration, but assure you, we want the best for you and will do all we can to support you. To this end, Mr Vallance will run a weekly academic update for all exam groups on a Tuesday from 16.00 and will send joining details out to relevant pupils and parents. Despite challenge, there is always much to celebrate, so please may I request photos of our pupils engaged in Luckley Online so that we might share this positive message on our social media platforms. Photos can be sent to Desni.Ennis@luckleyhouseschool.org. All aspects of Luckley Online will be kept under review and you will be alerted to any changes made. Technology is a wonderful tool, but there will inevitably be some challenges along the way. I have asked all our pupils to be considerate and patient. Let us treat people with kindness at this challenging time and remember always that where there is belief, there is possibility. With best wishes Yours sincerely

2. Online Learning – Guidance for Pupils Online Lessons Luckley Online will follow the same timetable as Luckley Onsite. This means there is no change to when lessons are, so follow your usual timetable. Lessons will be about10 minutes shorter to allow you some breathing space, moments away from the screen and a chance to log into your next lesson in good time. Your lessons will be live on Teams, but this doesn’t mean you will be staring at the screen for 50 minutes every lesson. You might find that your teachers will take a register at the start of the lesson and greet you – please have your cameras on, but mics off! You may then find, as in the onsite lessons, that your teacher spends approximately 20 minutes or so explaining work to you and then you may be given a task to do. This task may be on screen, in your books, on paper or in groups - even if you are ‘sent off’ to complete a task your teacher will remain in the lesson with you, waiting to help you and take your questions. They will always bring you all back together again at the end of a lesson to check that all is well, that you understand and also to give you your prep as appropriate. You must please stay in your lessons until you are dismissed. Every Luckley Online lesson will be slightly different, just as lessons would be with Luckley Onsite. Any live streamed, recorded or pre-recorded lessons will be posted on Microsoft Teams on the conversation/posts page. If you choose to handwrite your work, you can scan this in and upload it by using Microsoft Lens or by taking a photograph of your work. As long as you are fit and healthy you will be expected to attend all live lessons. If you are unwell or absent for some reason, your parents must please report your absence to reception. Registers will be taken and Heads of Year will follow up absences by contacting home. If circumstances do not allow you to watch a live lesson, then please do watch the recording which will be posted on Teams. This will also enable you to review it again later as revision if you wish. Staff Absence If your teacher is absent for any reason, they will set suitable work via your class Team. They may be able to record lessons for you to watch if appropriate. You will be given clear instructions at the start of the lesson. Prep Prep for Years 11 – 13 will continue as normal. A new homework timetable for Year 10 with somewhat reduced prep will be set. Core subjects will continue to set homework for all pupils in Years 7 – 9. In addition, pupils in Year 9 will also have the option to complete projects provided by non-core subjects. Pupils in Years 7 & 8 have the option to complete the homework projects which have already been uploaded onto the relevant Homework OneNote. Public Examinations As it stands most, but not all, public exams have been cancelled. iGCSE exams are still going ahead at the moment, but things are changing every day and OFQUAL currently has a consultation out so we know we will have more guidance in the coming weeks. The key message is to keep focussed and work hard so that you will be able to perform at your best when you are tested when we are permitted back to site. As soon as we have more information on how you will be finally assessed we will let you know. I know this is a frustrating time, but we will do all we can to support you. We are in this together! Mr Vallance will run a weekly academic update for all exam groups on a Tuesday from 16:00. Mr Vallance will send details to pupils in Year 11 and 13. Individual Lessons and Tutorials If you have individual 1:1 lessons your teachers will be in touch with your parents for any music and drama lessons or directly with you for any study or learning skills.

A pupil guide to Luckley Online
1. Make sure you stick to all school policies and pay special attention to the Acceptable Use and e-Safety Policies. Copies can be found here: School Policies. 2. Excellent behaviour is expected at all times. If your behaviour is inappropriate, please expect staff to respond as they would in onsite lessons. Your teacher may mute your audio or remove you from the online lesson if necessary. 3. Select a sensible, neutral location for your lesson. Please try and avoid your bedroom for lessons, although we recognise this may be difficult for some pupils. 4. Please select an area with as few distractions as possible and blur your background where needed. 5. You may wear suitable home clothes, these must be appropriate and as you would wear for a home clothes day at school. 6. When joining a live online lesson, please have your microphone off (to limit feedback) but your video on so that your teacher can see you and gauge your understanding and engagement. If issues with broadband make this difficult, just let your teacher know, but at least try to get your video working when your teacher is talking directly to you or when you are talking to your teacher and peers in group work. 7. At the start of the lesson, a register will be taken as usual. If you are watching a recording, make sure you register your attendance by commenting in the thread where the lesson is posted. 8. Please join your lesson on time. If you are watching pre-recorded lessons, ensure that you have watched all relevant lessons for the day so that you do not get behind. 9. If you want to ask question after the lesson, you can email your teacher or post a question in the same thread as the lesson recording. This will make it easier for your teacher to answer you and for your class to help as appropriate. 10. All written and verbal comments in online lessons must at all times be appropriate to the formality of your lesson. You should communicate with each other and with the teacher as is normally suitable in a lesson at School. Please do not overuse emojis and irrelevant images in your chats. 11. Please do not talk over each other when asking questions. If you post a question in the thread/chat, a teacher will answer you or you can use the ‘raise your hand’ facility on Teams. 12. You must not make your own recording in any lessons, tutor times or meetings. All relevant lessons will automatically be recorded and posted in the Team. Do not take photos or videos of any staff or pupils, this will be viewed as a serious breach of conduct. 13. Do not use your mobile during lessons, the same rules apply at home as at school. 14. These guidelines are supported by all normal School Policies including the Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy. 6
General Guidance
1. Make sure you know how to access Teams and join live lessons or recorded lessons in Teams. If you are missing from a subject Team, please email your teacher so that they can add you. 2. You should have Teams invites in your calendar, if you can’t see these, then go to your subject team and access the lesson from within the Team. If you need help, Mr Beasley has created this video for you How to join a Teams Lesson 3. Please be patient. Everyone is trying really hard to make this the best experience it can be, but tech does sometimes freeze/fail so be understanding and kind. 4. Mr Wilkinson Dan.Wilkinson@luckleyhouseschool.org is here to help you with any technical issues. Mr Beasley can also help you, but remember he does teach a full timetable. If your need is urgent call the school office on 0118 978 4175 and they will try and find someone to help you. 5. Ideally, ensure your device is plugged in when in use. If you use a digital pen, ensure you have extra batteries available. 6. Please ensure you have your textbooks, files etc. all to hand, just as you would do in a classroom. 7. Please use your School email address and not a private address for all communication with your teachers at school. 8. There will be a lot on offer, so take part in everything you can, it will really enhance your experience and you may find a new hobby or interest. 9. Please take time away from the screen – read a book, play a game, bake, get some exercise – find balance. 10. Most important – we are all here for you, so please get in touch to see if we can help.

3. Online Learning – Guidance for Parents Guidance for Parents Please do take the time to watch Karl Hopwood’s online parent seminar which he filmed for Luckley. This talk can be found here Welcome and Karl Hopwood after the welcome address. Karl is an independent e-safety expert. He is a member of UKCCIS (UK Council for Child Internet Safety) and sits on the advisory board for the UK Safer Internet Centre and the education advisory board for CEOP. Karl has worked for a number of key players in the UK and abroad including CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre), BECTA (British Educational and Communications Technology). Karl has also addressed the staff recently. He was due to visit Luckley to speak to pupils this January, but due to lockdown we will be rescheduling this talk for as soon as we are able. The following guidelines will help to provide a positive environment for online learning. We would ask parents to please support these guidelines where possible, but do recognise that every home situation is different, so please do adapt these as fit for your home. Should you need to deviate from any particular protocol significantly or are concerned about doing so, please let us know. 1. Please report absence to the office in the usual way. We are required now to report daily absence to the DfE. 2. Your son/daughter should select a suitable, neutral location for their lesson. Try to avoid using their bedroom for lessons if at all possible. 3. Please select an area with as few distractions as possible. 4. It is preferable to use a space with a suitable desk and chair for comfort and safety. 5. Encourage your son/daughter to keep a regular schedule around their timetable. Consistent times for waking up and going to sleep would be advantageous. 6. Please encourage your son/daughter to engage with extended day and other activities. Make use of the creative and sporting challenges and spend some time away from the screen each day. Staying fit and active, as well as being creative and wider reading beyond curriculum activities are good for balance and wellbeing. 7. Lessons will run according to the usual timetable, with the same start time but slightly shorter lesson durations. Single lessons will run for approximately 50 minutes. This will give pupils a tenminute break between lessons. They should use this time to prepare for the next lesson and to stand up, stretch and have a few moments away from the screen. 8. Mobile phones are not needed during online lessons and the same rules apply. Phones can be a distraction and we recommend that mobiles are turned off and put away during lesson time. We do know that some pupils may need their phone and ask that parents use their discretion monitoring this at home. 9. Please do let your son/daughter chat to their friends online when they are not in lessons. It may add to screen time but it does provide an opportunity for friends to remain in touch in these challenging times. 10. Please encourage your sons/daughters to be wise with their online profiles. Their digital footprint is important. Appropriate policies relating to online learning/e-safety/behaviour are all relevant and remain valid during online lessons. Copies of our policies can be found here: School Policies.

Study Skills Visit the Luckley House website for tips and techniques to help information ‘stick’ more successfully in your long-term memory. (Update 5 February 2021) Technical Guidance It would be helpful if you could please ensure the following: 1. The software on your son/daughter’s device is kept up to date including antivirus and systems software. 2. Your home filtering software is up to date and in place. 3. Your child’s device is plugged in and charged. 4. If digital pens are used, please do keep a supply of batteries to hand. 5. Pupils should please use headphones for a better sound experience and especially if working in a communal area. 6. Remind your son/daughter to mute the microphone unless they are contributing to the lessons or collaborating with peers to limit audio feedback. 7. If you struggle with bandwidth, encourage your son/daughter to turn the video feature off unless actively speaking in the lesson or asked to be visible by his/her teacher. Mr Wilkinson is available for technical help and support. He can provide remote guidance and assistance via email on Dan.Wilkinson@luckleyhouseschool.org . Mr Wilkinson has also established a ‘drive-through’ service. If needed, you will be invited to visit site where he will be able to connect to the Surface remotely while you remain in the comfort of your car. For complex IT problems that cannot be fixed in this way, Mr Wilkinson will take the Surface from your car and return it to you in a Covid-safe manner – fully sanitised. Microsoft has published specific guidance for online learning with 365. Distance learning with Office 365. You can also access short 30 to 45 second tips on understanding Teams in a series ‘how to’ videos called Teams for Parents. These are not Luckley specific, but you may find them helpful never-the-less. If you are an iPhone user, Apple has a number of Family Sharing tools that should allow you to get weekly reports on screen time, set downtime for app use and apply safety restrictions. Apple guidance for this can be found here Family Sharing. You may also find it useful to access Vodafone’s Digital Parenting Guidance. This website contains useful hints and tips as well as Parental controls and filtering advice for a variety of devices. Further resources can be found at the Safer Internet Centre Safer Internet Centre or via the NSPCC. There are many things that Mr Wilkinson may be able to help you with, but if you need further assistance with your home internet settings, your Internet Service Provider should have specific guidance your device regarding safety and optimum performance.

Children’s Mental Health Week - is next week (w/c 1 February) and the theme is ‘express yourself’. Talking about mental health and expressing our feelings can be difficult, no matter our age. As we are currently in our third lockdown, it’s more important than ever to share how we’re feeling with others. We are encouraging pupils, staff and parents next week to send videos of themselves ‘expressing themselves’ doing something creative. From things like drawing, painting, playing an instrument, as well as of course sport and physical activity. We want to see what you are all up too. Watch the promo video posted on Monday to see what the PE department have been up to. (29 January 2021 update) Weekly Remote Challenges Watch this space for a series for all the family to get involved with. Each week, we will upload a video to our Twitter (@LuckleySport) and Instagram (@luckleyhousesport), as well as each year group Microsoft Team. Pupils, parents and staff can all get involved and can gain points for their Houses, which will go towards the sports day totals (entries via email or MS Forms). There will be prizes for any standout achievements or commitment! Luckley House School Strava & Park Run As part of our continued push to keep everyone active we have created a Luckley House School Strava Club! All you need to do is search for the school via Strava clubs and click join. Our department aim will be to cover as many kms as possible over the most recent lockdown! Mr Standing will also be organising whole-school park runs – click here to join Luckley House School Run Links for pupils are posted on the Team page Luckley Sport Strava Challenge - As a department we are also challenging the school to see if we can complete 1000km over the month of February – to monitor this we are going to use Strava and you will need to follow Luckley House Sport, where you will then be invited to our private club. The km’s can be running, walking or cycling! (29 January 2021 update) Athlete Development Programme (ADP) Our ADP will continue to run for those selected – these details will be emailed out and communicated to all pupils. For the juniors, they will have group physical literacy sessions and access to a bank of exercise videos, based around their ‘At home exercise plan’ and our seniors will have 1-2-1 and group sessions, run both in lessons and as a lunch time/extended day, which will be bespoke to them and their sport. Seniors will also have access to the bank of exercise videos with their own programme to be logged on their OneNote. We will also have live sessions on diet and managing workload this half term via Teams. Skills to Master in Lockdown
