MUSIC SCHOLARS IMPRESS!

DofE NEW FOREST TREK

This week we held a special concert for all the music scholars. It was a fabulous evening made up of solos from so many different disciplines, all performing different genres and styles. The programme included challenging instrumental concertos for bassoon, clarinet and flute, a Latin piece for Saxophone and an array of outstanding vocal performances from classical, musical theatre and pop. Well done to all our young performers.

Last weekend saw our DofE Silver Award (all-girl) group take part in their assessed expedition in the New Forest, in the glorious sunshine. A great first day of walking ended in a well earned camp at (a slightly midgey) Ocknell. Day 2 was a long trek and, after some minor navigational errors, both groups arrived at our second camp at Ashampton just an hour before dark, tired, but thankful for the use of the hot showers! The girls had an excellent final day with a successful pass for all. Congratulations to all and huge thanks to the staff who gave up their weekend. We are now looking forward to the Bronze expedition in West Berkshire in June. Scot McNaughton, Outdoor Education

Orphan Anne is intelligent, feisty, funny and imaginative and I have loved her character and this book since I was 11. The story is set in beautiful Prince Edward Island, Canada, in the late 19th Century, where Anne is mistakenly sent to two middle-aged siblings. Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert had originally intended to adopt a boy to help them on their farm but Anne works her way into their hearts. Travel in time and place and meet Anne as she grows up and discovers her friends, foes and loves. Written for all ages, Anne of Green Gables is located in the classics section of our junior fiction. THE GREAT 8/2 SCIENCE BAKE OFF An unusually entertaining end to our Unicellular Organisms topic saw a group of Year 8 scientists refine their knowledge of yeast and anaerobic respiration by competing to be crowned ‘Luckley House Year 8 Science Bake Off Champion’. Sublime skills were displayed by all and the scientists can be rightly proud of themselves. Milly, who was far too modest to be part of the photo, took the inaugural crown with an astonishing loaf decorated with poppy seeds in the style of a yeast cell. A few members of our team baked for the first time and all found that this fun activity really helped them understand the use of friendly microbes in our everyday life. Bravo Team 8/2. What a great way to rise to the challenge of the end of year ‘fun quiz’. Make sure your revision isn’t, ahem, half-baked now! #believe. Mr N Dey, Science Teacher
