My name is Desmond Young, born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi. I grew up as a visualizer, attending a performing arts school and being molded and later molding myself to my preferred method of visualization. I had access to an array of potential visual methods such as printmaking, pyrography, photography, painting, collaging, and drawing. From 4th grade to 12th grade, I explored all of these and have even continued my own personal growth throughout college. I have learned that what is even more important than method of visualization is the method to which one thinks. This has been the greatest driver of progress, focus, and curiosity in this new endeavor I have taken up known as Architecture and I could not be more excited for the future that lies ahead of me.

POLY TOWERS Washington University in St. Louis ARCH 311 - Fall 2022 Pablo Moyano Fernandez Poly Towers serves to make a political statement against the lack of third spaces for people to exist freely in. Home and work being the main place of stay in cities can produce social isolation and lack of community engagement. With this redesign, Poly Towers complements lakeshore drive with additional pubic space consisting of two floors in both towers, and additional non-living space for the residents higher in both towers. These additional amenity spaces can include cafe's, an outdoor walk track, lounge space, and indoor live performances, while not interfering with the existing live-in units. The form and landscape is biomorphic, mimmicking a flower and the positioning of its petals.

ARTIST RESIDENCY Washinton University in St. Louis ARCH 312 - Spring 2023 Hans Tursack Artist Residency represents an experimental approach to designing and organizing programmatic and spatial relationships within an enclosed structure. The first two exercises are influential in determining the structural and interior components of the tower and utilizing these interior spatial relationships to define the specific programmatic space in creative ways. This unorthodox approach presented an interesting problem for maximizing overall functionality of space and aesthetics. The rainscreen and window framing system is a seperate investigation, but necessary to be approached carefully to achieve homogeneity in overall design.

KINDERGARTEN Washington University in St. Louis ARCH 212 — Spring 2022 Ryan Abendroth The Kindergarten is an investigation of the design process. How direct or unorthodox can this process be if the end goal is a fully designed building. In this approach, I started with designing a game to be played by kindergarteners aged 4-6. I wanted to study the game and derive a means of programmatic expression for my next two iterations. The primitive kindergarten would serve as a smaller iteration of a kindergarten, its shape being comprised of the game's different sized blocks. The next and final iteration would be the Kindergarten. Its form is derived from the varied degree of movement that can occur in the game, utilizing both negative and positive space. The final form inspired the program and additional aesthetic choices. Radicalizing the design process has proven to be important to innovative design outcomes.

Game for kindergartenerss
Can be played with just one board. Objective is to exit the box with chosen colored block before opponent. Can choose to use your move for your own colored block or a wooden block to block the path of your oponent. Blocks can only move orthogonally in the space.s
Primitive Kindergarten Exploration
Utilizing the block shapes of the game for quick programming of negative or postive space. First floor of primitive kindergarten.
Two boards face to face adds extra level of difficulty. New objective is to reach corner of the other box before opponent.s

Same rationale for first floor in determining programmatic language. Second floor of primitive kindergarten.

Building Systems Louisiana Tech University ARCH 425 — Spring 2021 Sustainability Studio
SOLAR DECATHLON In this studio, we were tasked with designing a sustainable student center with a focus primarily on water, energy, economy and community, to be built on the campus of Florida Polytechnic University. We engaged this task first by researching different means of sustainable design applicable Solar Decathlon Design Challenge to our region, studying precedents that utilize said strategies. Fall 2023 We later would test the capability of our buildings with Ryan Abendroth BIM, daylight and energy simulations using Insight 360. My primary focus when designing this structure was the opportunity of community. I wanted to create a sustainable The proposed project aims to provide a low-cost, highpiece of architecture that would connect public and density solution to building affordable, passive-house-quality private in a non-invasive way. The product of that research units throughout the Jeff Vanderlou neighborhood of St. and development was the Florida Poly Wellness Center.
Louis. Efforts to minimize square footage within the two story, two-unit typology allow for a greater efficacy in reducing overall losses, while also standardizing construction so as to reduce the overall material cost and allow for a scalable, modular construction. A low-slope roofing system allows for the integration of enough PV to generate a net-zero energy target. My role included every aspect related to the design such as the outward form, floor plans, creating drawings and renders, while collaborating with team memebrs in other areas as well.
