A practical guide for farm work

Why a skid steer suits farm work • It can pivot in place, so it works where a tractor or larger loader has limited room. • Most listed machines are about 1.5–1.7 metres wide; the Bobcat S70 is 900 mm. • A quick coupler lets one machine handle different tools. • This is useful in cattle sheds, orchards, farmyards and enclosed compounds.

What farm jobs can it handle? Shed and yard cleaning
3
Loading Move manure, gravel, sand, grain bags and other farm materials.
Buckets can move manure, bedding and waste in confined areas.
Silage and fodder
Ground work
Grab buckets and bale tools can handle loose fodder and bales.
Levelling, backfilling and fence-post preparation are practical uses.
Limit A skid steer cannot plough, sow or spray because it has no PTO or three-point linkage.

Skid steer or tractor?
Choose a tractor when… You need ploughing, sowing, spraying, road haulage or PTOdriven implements.
Choose a skid steer when… Handling is the bottleneck: shed cleaning, loading, tight compounds, levelling or site clearing.
In practice For most Indian farms, the source guide puts the tractor first and the skid steer second when handling work justifies it.

Wheels or tracks?
7
Wheeled skid steer A practical choice for dry yards, concrete sheds and firm farm tracks. Tyres are simpler and easier to replace.
WHEELS
Compact track loader Better on genuinely soft or wet ground because rubber tracks spread weight and improve traction.
Why it matters A wheeled skid steer can scrub and dig into wet soil when pivoting.

Practical point
For most Indian farms, the guide recommends tyres unless soft ground is a real part of the workload.

Where a skid steer fits on an Indian farm • Strong fit for handling work in dairies, poultry operations, farmyards and orchards. • Its small footprint and pivot turning help in spaces where a tractor-loader cannot manoeuvre easily. • Its value comes from using the right attachment for the work. • It complements a tractor; it does not replace field cultivation equipment.
