A mixture of high-class gallop races, the world exclusive Skikjöring, and thrilling trotting races allow the leading actors, i.e. the well bred racehorses, to become the focus of attention of the enthusiastic spectators.

An unequalled top-class catering service is available in a special VIP area and in the public catering area, the spectators can treat themselves to grilled sausages or a Chinese menu, while enjoying the St. Moritz sunshine. A glass of champagne, as sparkling as the atmosphere, can be sipped to celebrate a win.

The fringe programme is packed with events: bands on the site will enchant the visitors, creations by regional and international artists can be admired, and the protagonists of the shows can be warmly applauded between the main races.

On every racing Sunday, visitors will hold their programmes eagerly during the drawing of the Prix d’Honneur lots.

fakten und zahlen Auf der rund 765’000 m2 grossen Fläche des St. Moritzersees werden in tagelanger Arbeit 60’000 m2 Geläuf und 90’000 m2 Eventbereich angelegt. Über 75 Zeltbauten werden erstellt, davon auf ca. 2’500 m2 das VIP-Zelt für die geladenen Gäste. Rund 900 Prominente aus Wirtschaft, Politik und Gesellschaft werden pro Sonntag im VIP-Zelt kulinarisch verwöhnt. 40 bis 50 Tonnen Lebensmittel werden allein an den drei Renntagen verbraucht. Daneben werden beim Public Catering 8’000 Würste, 1’000 Portionen chinesische Spezialitäten, 750 Portionen Risotto, 950 Portionen Raclette und u. a. gut 2’000 gefüllte Schokoladenkugeln verkauft. Rund 150 Journalisten akkreditierten sich jedes Wochenende im Pressezelt auf dem zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee und wurden durch das Presse-Team ganztags betreut und verpflegt.

More than 75 tents have to be put up including the VIP tent of just under 2,500 sqm for the invited guests. About 900 VIPs and celebrities from business, politics and high society are served culinary delights in the VIP tent on each race Sunday. No less than 40 to 50 tons of food are consumed on the three racing days. Die White Turf Verantwortlichen wie auch die gesamte Pferdesportwelt fühlten sich äusserst geehrt und genossen zusammen mit dem Magistraten den prächtigen Renntag.

interview mit silvio martin staub Seit 1992 leitete Rudolf Fopp gemeinsam mit Hansruedi Schaffner die Geschicke bei den Pferderennen in St. Moritz.

Im Jahre 2010 erfolgte der große personelle Wechsel an der Spitze bei White Turf zu Silvio Martin Staub. Drei Jahre war er alt, als ihn sein Vater Martin Staub erstmals auf ein Pferd setzte. Mit acht Jahren verkaufte er Rennprogramme und begleitete oft seinen Vater, der damals Stallchef war. Im Alter

von gerade einmal 18 Jahren nahm er am Skikjöring teil und erlebte 1998 mit dem Gewinn der Credit Suisse SkikjöringTrophy den sportlichen Höhepunkt. Im administrativen Bereich arbeitete er seit 2004 beim Vorstand und Direktorium von White Turf mit, bevor er im vergangenen Sommer das sicher nicht leichte Erbe von Rudolf Fopp antrat, als dessen Ziehsohn er sich bezeichnet. Silvio Martin Staub feiert während White Turf 2011 seinen 35. Geburtstag und leitet in der dritten Generation die in St. Moritz ansässige Firma seiner Familie, welche Kamine, Natursteine und Mosaike in Handarbeit herstellt.

Sind Sie traurig darüber, dass Sie nun nicht mehr als aktiver Sportler beim White Turf dabei sind?

Ja, ich bin mit Rennpferden gross geworden und liebe den Nervenkitzel hinter dem Pferd. Da die beiden Aktivitäten, CEO und Skikjöringfahrer zeitlich nicht vereinbar sind, habe ich mich für die neue und sehr anspruchsvolle Aufgabe entschieden. Ich gelte bis heute als jüngster Skikjöringkönig aller Zeiten und möchte mich als neuer Präsident nicht auf Versuche einlassen. Als Besitzer werde ich mit der Scuderia del Clan in allen 3 Rennsparten vertreten sein.

Welche Rolle spielt die See-Infra bzw. was wurde in dieser Hinsicht alles vereinbart?

Die See-Infra zeichnet verantwortlich für die Grundinfrastrukturbauten auf dem gesamten See von Anfang Januar bis Ende Februar. Mir als Präsident der See-Infra, Polo Organisator Heinz Reber sowie unserem Bautenchef Christian Brantschen ist es gelungen eine einvernehmliche Lösung zu finden, die ein „gemeinsam am Strick ziehen“ ermöglicht.

Gibt es Veränderungen und Neuerungen?

Veränderungen gibt es immer und überall. Sichtbar werden sie jedoch erst in Gesprächen und schlussendlich am Tage X auf dem Rennplatz.

Welche gesellschaftlichen Anlässe sind geplant?

Wie in den Vorjahren wird der Credit Suisse Cocktail Abend das Highlight sein. An den ersten beiden Samstagabenden wird ein Aktivenabend die Besitzer, Trainer, Reiter und Freunde des White Turf einander wieder ein bisschen näher bringen. Im Sinne, back to the roots. Auch hier wollen wir den „gemeinsamen Geist“ zwischen einheimischer Bevölkerung und Rennsportszene fühlen und leben. Weiter stehen unter der Woche traditionell Curling und Eisstockschiessen auf dem Programm.

Wie gestaltet sich die (zeitliche) Vertragslage bei den Hauptsponsoren BMW und Credit Suisse?

Unsere beiden treuen Hauptsponsoren machen es allen wieder vor. Credit Suisse bis 2014, BMW bis 2013, mit Optionen auf weitere Jahre.

Wie sehen Sie die weitere Entwicklung von White Turf in den kommenden Jahren?

Dies ist ein Thema das wir schon aufgegriffen haben. Ein Workshop nach dem anderen wird unser Begleiter im Jahre 2011 sein. Ideen und Visionen. Die Zeit sowie Ansprüche verändern sich enorm schnell. White Turf wird mitziehen und sicherlich da und dort wiederum Pionierrollen übernehmen.

Wir sind uns der Arbeit unserer Vorväter bewusst und werden dies pflegen. White Turf ist der schillernde Event im Engadin mit nationaler Achtung. Das ganze Team rund um die internationalen Pferderennen ist sich dessen bewusst und wird dem auch noch einen draufsetzen.

Was überwiegt denn vor dem ersten Renntag von White Turf - Die Vorfreude oder doch eher die Anspannung?

Die Vorfreude wird sicherlich überwiegen. Das neue Team ist mit viel Enthusiasmus seit Monaten am Wirken. Die Bedeutung dieses einmaligen Anlasses liegt jedem Einzelnen vor Augen und es wird akribisch im Detail hineingearbeitet.

Die Anspannung wird am 6. Februar jedoch sicherlich unser Begleiter sein, im Wissen dass man weder das Wetter noch unfallfreie Rennen planen kann.

Wie verlief aus Ihrer Sicht der Übergang in die Verantwortung für White Turf in den vergangenen Wochen und Monaten?

Das Team rund um White Turf hat die Übergabe genauestens geplant und koordiniert. Ein Event dieser Grösse darf nicht mit einer Person stehen oder fallen. Mir als Hauptverantwortlicher, sowie den Mitstreitern aus Direktorium und Organisationskomitee war und ist die Bedeutung stets bewusst. Es wurde mit viel Eifer und professionellem Wissen einem reibungslosen Übergang Folge geleistet.

Wie sind die Aufgaben innerhalb des Direktoriums von White Turf verteilt?

Im Grunde genommen verläuft die Führung wie früher. Das OK tagt jährlich 5 - 7 Mal. Das Direktorium nach Aufwand und Pendenzen zwischen 12 - 20 Mal. Die Führung meinerseits

He was only three years old when his father, Martin Staub, made him mount a horse for the first time. At the age of eight he sold racing programmes and often accompanied his father who was an equerry at that time. When he was just 18 years old he participated in the Skikjöring, and when he won the Credit Suisse Skikjöring Trophy in 1998, he experienced the peak of his sports career.

In administrative matters he worked with the White Turf board of directors and the management committee from 2004, before becoming Rudolf Fopp’s successor last summer as his foster-son, a legacy that will certainly not always be easy for him. Silvio Martin Staub will celebrate his 35th birthday during the 2011 White Turf and he is the third generation to be at the head of the family enterprise that produces hand-made open fireplaces, dressed stone, and mosaics.

How are the tasks assigned at the board of managers of the White Turf?

Fundamentally the management takes the same course as before. The organisation committee has meetings five to seven times a year, while the board of managers, depending on concerns, meets twelve to twenty times a year. The secretary’s office and myself as well as the vice president come together daily.

What are your main duties in your role?

Right from the start I was eager to reveal a new visual identity: young, innovative, and aware of traditions – and see that this was implemented. In the field of action, with our agencies abroad and myself as an active owner and harness racer, we are about to drum up business for the White Turf on the racecourses.

Are you sad not to be able to participate in the White Turf as an active sportsman anymore?

Yes, I grew up with race horses and adore the thrill of being behind a horse. As the activities of CEO and Skikjöring driver are incompatible time-wise, I decided to opt for this new and very challenging task. To this day, I am considered as the youngest Skikjöring king of all time, and as the new President, I don’t want to take any risks. As an owner, I will be represented with the Scuderia del Clan in all three racing fields.

Which part does the ‘See-Infra’ play, or rather what has been agreed in this respect?

The ‘See-Infra’ is responsible for the basic infrastructural construction on the entire lake, from the beginning of January to the end of February. As the president of the ‘See-Infra’ I succeeded together with the polo organiser Heinz Reber and our construction chief Christian Brantschen in finding a mutual agreement that enables us to ‘act in concert’.

Will there be any modifications and innovations?

Modifications come up at all times and everywhere, but they only become serious during official discussions and finally on

What is the dominant feeling for you before the first White Turf racing day – pleasant anticipation or rather a certain tension?

Pleasant anticipation will certainly be predominant. The new team has already worked for months with great enthusiasm.

Everyone is aware of the significance of this unique event and everything is prepared with meticulous precision. No doubt we will still be feeling the tension on 6th February, knowing that it is impossible to guarantee either the weather or that the races will be without accidents.

From your point of view, during the past weeks and months how has the transition of responsibilities for the White Turf gone?

The team in charge of the White Turf has planned and coordinated the transition in the utmost detail. In an event such as this one cannot depend on just a single individual. As the main person responsible, I am and always was conscious of the implications, and so are my fellow campaigners from the management and the organisation. The problem-free

What kind of social events are planned?

As in previous years, the Credit Suisse cocktail evening will be the highlight. On the first two Saturday evenings, a get-together of all the persons involved will reunite owners, trainers, riders, and friends of the White Turf. Here too, we would like everyone to experience the community spirit between the local inhabitants and the racing sport scene.

Furthermore, the programme during the week includes the traditional curling contest.

Was it possible to attract new sponsors for the races?

For many years we have counted on long-standing partnerships. Nevertheless, even in that regard there are changes coming up and new synergies will be created. We are sure to find new and good names among the racing sponsors at the 2011 White Turf.

How is the development of the contractual situation (time-wise) with the principal sponsors BMW and Credit Suisse?

Our two faithful principal sponsors are here to stay: Credit Suisse until 2014 and BMW until 2013, with an option for further extension.

How do you see the subsequent development of the White Turf in the coming years?

This is a topic that we have already discussed. One workshop after the other will be held all through 2011. Ideas and visions and demands change extremely quickly. The White Turf will play along and, as before, will certainly achieve pioneering feats here and there. We are conscious of the work accomplished by our forebears and will cultivate it. The White Turf is a colourful event of national esteem taking place in the Engadine. The members of the entire team involved in the event are aware of this and will do everything possible to surpass their past efforts.

pferdestärke aus schwarzem gold Beim White Turf 2011 auf dem zugefrorenen St. Moritzersee stehen Pferde nicht nur im Renngeschehen im Mittelpunkt. Um den hochkarätigen Winterevent mit Kunstobjekten zu bereichern, haben der aus dem Fextal stammende Künstler Marco Zuffellato sowie der Zürcher Künstler Cla Coray ihre Gedanken zum Thema Pferd künstlerisch umgesetzt. Cla Coray hat dafür eine Serie plastischer Pferdeskulpturen aus dem aussergewöhnlichen Material Bitumen geschaffen, die im VIP-Bereich ausgestellt werden.

Die pechschwarzen, stämmigen Figuren sind Sinnbild und Ausdruck der archaischen Kraft und Eleganz dieser energetischen Tiere. Die Wahl des heiss zu verarbeitenden Materials Bitumen – ein aus Erdöl und Gestein gewonnenes, zähflüssiges Destillat, das bereits vor 6000 Jahren in der Kunst und heute vorwiegend für den Strassenbau eingesetzt wird – lag für den Künstler auf der Hand, bzw. der Strasse.

Pferdestärken spielen in der mobilen Welt eine tragende Rolle, wie Erdöl und Bitumen als deren Antriebsmittel und Strassenunterlage. Daraus resultiert eine Faszination der Gegensätze, die sich in einer Schwarz-Weiss-Wahrnehmung, in Hitze und Kälte, in Bitumen und Schnee widerspiegelt. Dem Glanz und Glamour des Endprodukts steht der handwerklich aufwendige Entstehungsprozess im Atelier gegenüber. Was bleibt ist die ungeschminkte Authentizität eines Werks, geprägt von einem starken, beständigen Charakter. Qualitäten, die auch ein grosses Pferderennen ausmachen.

At the 2011 White Turf on the frozen lake of St. Moritz, horses are not the only focus of attention on the race course. Determined to enrich the prestigious winter event with art objects, the artists Marco Zuffellato, originally from Val Fex, and Cla Coray from Zurich gave artistic form to their ideas on the subject of horses. Cla Coray created a series of three-dimensional horse sculptures in an unusual bitumen material. These will be exhibited in the VIP area. The jet-black, stocky figures are a symbol and expression of the archaic force and elegance of these energetic animals. The choice of bitumen was obvious for the artist. Bitumen is a material that has to be manufactured hot. It is a distillate of petroleum and rock that was first used for pieces of art 6000 years ago and nowadays is used mainly for road construction. Horsepower plays an important part in our mobile world, just as petroleum and bitumen are important to provide the driving force and road surface. As a result the fascination of contrasts is reflected by a black and white perception, heat and cold, bitumen and snow. The radiance and glamour of the final product is in contrast with the lavish process of creation in the studio.

The result is a work of plain authenticity that has a strong and lasting character; qualities that also distinguish a major horse race.

Ziking arbeitete sich auf der Gegenseite innen nach vorn, erschien im Schlussbogen an fünfter Stelle und kam auf der Zielgeraden dank einem guten Finish auf den Ehrenplatz. Winterwind stürmte im Einlauf von weit hinten noch auf Rang drei. Bucked Off galoppierte im Eingang der Schlusskurve noch ganz in der Nähe des führenden Rolling Home, konnte jedoch im Einlauf nicht beschleunigen. Mannlichen gehörte im letzten Bogen zum Spitzenquartett mit Chancen auf Rang drei, musste sich schliesslich aber Rang vier mit Bucked Off teilen. Saphir Béré rückte am Ende der Gegenseite an die dritte Stelle, konnte den Kraftakt aber nicht durchziehen. Vlavianus, am Eingang der Schlusskurve etwa Siebenter, musste das Spitzenfeld in der Folge ziehen lassen. Fighting Johan erschien bei der ersten Zielpassage noch an der Seite von Rolling Home, fiel jedoch zu Beginn des letzten Bogens zurück. First Time, von Anfang an im Hintertreffen, konnte keine Akzente setzen. Auch Song of Victory spielte über das ganze Rennen hinweg keine entscheidende Rolle.

Fighting Johan was next to Rolling Home when he crossed the finishing line after the first lap but slowed down when entering the last lap. First Time was at disadvantage right from the start and could not make an impression.

regional sponsoring partners welcome During the peak winter season, the White Turf offers the ideal platform for sponsors to cultivate contacts with existing partners and to find first points of contact with future customers. Furthermore, the racecourse surrounded by the alpine setting with the majestic mountains, serves as a stage for presentations and the sale of new products. In 2011, sponsorship fees of about 1.5 million Swiss francs will flow into the White Turf. Besides the principal sponsors BMW and Credit Suisse, there are always racing sponsors, official partners, event sponsors, as well as local sponsors and barter sponsors at the race track that is created every year for a limited time by nature. The persons responsible for the White Turf put special emphasis on the establishment and involvement of regional partners.
