Design by Kolding

Kolding is a design city. Not in name only. Just look at Design Map Kolding; a map of a city filled with design institutions ranging from the international branding initiative, Danish Design & Architecture Initiative, to educational institutions, design museums, innovation houses, and not least a local government that wants design. Literally, Kolding is putting design on the map; with Kolding School of Design at the centre.

Does the local hold a future? Local production, local communities, local educations? Does the analogue world hold any future at all in a time when time can rarely be defined as a specific hour or time of day? The answer is yes. A movement has begun. Prompted by the enormous economic and ecological crises of which we have only witnessed the beginning.

Crises that force us to produce, consume and live in ways that we cannot yet imagine but which already energise the local with new meaning and new possibilities. City roofs are transformed into kitchen gardens tended by the local residents. Solar cells and household wind turbines interconnect through small, local systems bringing new life to neighbourliness. Farmers sell their goods locally. Or they sell them to the whole World incorporating the local element as a key ingredient and thus addressing a universal human need for closeness, reality 1:1, hands, that hold, care and create.

Kolding School of Design wants to be in the World. We have outposts in Ghana and in Shanghai. And of course, we’re in Milan. Still, we love our local place: Kolding. That’s why it’s important for us to help make Kolding even better; for instance by creating new local jobs using design as a leaver. Or great communities. We’re not alone. Ground Making

A print in blue, a kind of shoe, a wheel of luck, a global splash, a ray of light and interfering walls. Kolding School of Design presents the second edition of the exhibition concept The Tube and 6 new collaborations between designers and leading Danish companies.

Where Engineering Poetry (2012) initiated a co-creative activity with leading Danish companies, the successor Ground Making (2013) consolidates and pursues the results achieved in the first exhibition. This year’s theme refers to a common ground where young makers refine and adjust their professional methods and artistic skills in collaboration with engaged and experienced manufacturers.

With its diverse mix of craftsmanship and technology, poetry and intellect, culture and commerce, The Tube is a practical lesson in what design is about. The result is a fruitful tension between autonomy, intuition and commitment from young designers who want to break new ground. Having finished their education during a global crisis that isn’t over, they are preoccupied with showcasing the role designers can play – today and tomorrow.

For them and for that reason we’ll continue to make ground for new collaborations where existing networks and mindsets are challenged and explored in order to find new ways for growth and cultural understanding.

Nikolaj Lorentz Mentze Grundfos

Behind Water Regulation of water consumption is a key concern to Grundfos and Behind Water communicates the philosophy in a poetic and interactive way by engaging the audience to participate and reflect.

The collaboration between technical innovator GRUNDFOS and conceptual thinker Nikolaj Lorentz Mentze has resulted in a direct and provocative approach that transcends any conventional presentation of the company’s famous red circulator pump. The project takes the acknowledged design icon to a level of involvement and mindfulness which stronger than words conveys the vision and mission of GRUNDFOS. At the same time, the experts at GRUNDFOS were challenged to come up with a technical answer to the ultra-thin water film which mirrors a waterfall.

By inviting us to take the globe in our hands, Behind Water reveals the fragility of water and at the same time asks if we are willing to share responsibility for our planet.

Nikolaj Lorentz Mentze specialises in product design and works in the field between art and design.

With a holistic view on objects, his work combines fine detailing with honest materials, which reinforces the elegance and simplicity of his design.

He works with various design commissions, from product to installation and exhibition, as well as set design, and has participated in various exhibitions and projects.

Louise From Ecco

Achilles

Achilles balances on a spike, stiletto heel, unfolds an origamic super shoe and offers a penny for your thoughts. Is this a shoe, a seat or a statement?

Louise From has created a spectacular three-dimensional answer to the art of walking and has used her skills as a graphic designer to communicate the essence of ECCO as a brand. The result is a futuristic and almost iconic manifestation far from the ergonomic image of ECCO. However, according to Louise From, ECCO is a company with strong feminine values, which shows within the organisation and within the product line, yet with a characteristic and edgy profile. Both attitudes are reflected in the sharp design of Achilles which adds another dimension to walking, and the story of the famous greek hero. ECCO gives first priority to comfort and has kicked open a door and made their entrance on a brand new catwalk.

Cinderella and ECCO have left the party.

Louise From works as a freelance grahic designer and has her own studio where she develops visual identities, logos and music videos. She is a workaholic and has been blessed with projects ever since she graduated.

Also she is engaged in art blogging and debates on graphic issues. She likes challenges like the collaboration with ECCO where her graphic skills are tested in relation to other types of media allowing new sides of her talent to unfold.

Carl Emil Jacobsen ege carpet

Blueprint On just a few square metres a new dimension to the potential of carpet unfolds when a classic blueprint drawing turns into a pop-up showroom and displays a temporary, minimalistic living space.

The collaboration with ege carpet is an example of how an artistic exploratory approach to design gives rise to new ways of thinking about and perceiving a familiar product. Blueprint may change our stereotype attitudes towards wall-to-wall carpet when designer Carl Emil Jacobsen furnishes all surfaces of a container with carpet, creating a diminutive home of carpet-covered walls that open and close like a pop-up book. The common idea of carpet as a two-dimensional surface is incited when large and small sequences of archetypical furniture unfold into minimalistic interiors. The white construction drawing printed on the blue nylon accurately indicates height and width, whereas the depth must be experienced when the flat forms unfold and evolve from technical section to a living room in blue.

Carl Emil Jacobsen and ege carpet has rolled out the blue carpet and invites you to Pop In and Out.

Carl Emil Jacobsen has a deep interest in the way objects are created and the visions and thoughts that shape them. As an industrial designer he is fascinated by the role of being a creator of beauty and function.

What motivates and drives him is his passion for materials, colours and function combined with the building-up of concepts and moods.

Tobias Tøstesen the LEGO Group

Tobias Tøstesen is an industrial designer who loves to be in the process as much as he loves to share common pride for a job well done. The sense of community Tobias feels with colleagues, experts and end-users means everything to him.

In his mind, good design is dependent on teamwork.

He investigates different aspects of design such as ethics, humility, honesty, pure materials, functional details, sensibility and the simple story.

Chandelier

In the hands of a playful and strategic maker, the standardised LEGO elements prove their infinite potential in a lighting aspect yet again.

In the shape of a decadent chandelier hanging from the ceiling to the floor, the curved, transparent bricks offer a glance through the non-coloured lighting installation which, regardless, will change colour during the day, from distinctive cool to exclusive hot. Tobias Tøstesen has taken LEGO to another scale but also to the real world of architecture and design, where bricks, despite their familiar feel, persist to challenge human creativity and light up new paths. Nordic light is scarce and characterised by a subtle softness that differs from the contrasting light of the South; a fact that influences the way Nordic designers think architecture and design. With Chandelier LEGO “Golightly”.

The LEGO Group is a world-famous Danish brand, perhaps Denmark’s strongest. Everybody is familiar with the toy brick producer. Recent years’ focus on the LEGO Group’s turnaround and successful growth strategy has shown the need for alternative ”mind-sets” and agility; prerequisites for continued growth in a changeable world and increasingly tougher market.

Michael Svane Knap & Christian Troels REPUBLIC OF Fritz Hansen WoodUP Experimental veneer on endless repeat furnishes the container along with a giant wheel and a rocking horse when REPUBLIC OF Fritz Hansen saddles up.

Taking their starting point in repetition and play, Michael Svane Knap and Christian Troels have developed a new element that challenges the limits and the capacity of veneer. The unique veneer element serves as a basic module that, when multiplied, transforms into a spectacular, giant three-dimensional wheel. At the same time it works out as legs in what could be a Rocking Horse - for small and large imaginations.

With their spirited approach, the two designers have challenged REPUBLIC of Fritz Hansen on home ground and whether play or ornament, WoodUp calls for interaction and excites curiosity: How is it made? In the experimental and informal character of the sculptural wheel REPUBLIC of Fritz Hansen’s technical know-how is combined with fine craft, and cool casualness.

More than anything the two ambitious designers wanted to rock the world famous manufacturer of veneer classics and have succeeded in adding a fresh twist to the prominent collection.

Michael Svane Knap Christian Troels have demonstrated strong abilities in terms of Concept and product development.

Having recently graduated as product designers, they are already experienced in emotional design thinking and customer oriented products. They primarily work within the field of product design often focusing on the children’s universe, either from their own studio or their job at LEGO Concept Lab in Denmark.

REPUBLIC OF Fritz Hansen produces what is probably Denmark’s most famous chair, the Series 7 Chair, and is an international company working with some of the World’s top designers and architects. REPUBLIC of Fritz Hansen represents timeless Scandinavian design and manufactures first quality sculptural design furniture.

Lærke Ellegaard Kolding School of Design

Interference

Information and interference are two sides of the same coin. Kolding School of Design not only informs and interfers but also interacts with the surrounding world, in order to engage through craft and design.

Interference is key to Kolding School of Design and at the same time it is descriptive of the material as well as the effect used by textile designer Lærke Ellegaard to embody the information container of The Tube.

Literally speaking, interference occurs when two waves collide and reinforce each other. Figuratively speaking, interference represents the meeting between the students, the school and the “real world” as well as the encounter between original craft and industrial design; between computer aided manufacturing and making at its core.

The interference effect is not only expanding the narrow working space of the container but also makes ground for new inventions and unexpected meetings.

Lærke Ellegaard works with interaction and tactility from a textile design perspective and specialises in research of new materials and their individual potentials. She is interested in what the textile designer can add to the design field in terms of space and objects such as tactility, material and colour understanding. She works across disciplines and is motivated by the wish to push the boundaries for interior and textile spaces.

Kolding School of Design continuously allows itself to be challenged by the business community. Equally, the business community needs a push once in a while. In the encounter between convention and creativity, business and art, necessity and abundance, reality and dream – that’s where new design emerges.

Kolding School of Design builds on the tradition of Danish Design. The school’s approach to teaching is that we don’t provide the answer. We discover it together.

Kolding School of Design (DK) is rooted in the Danish cultural heritage and a view of life that is anti-hierarchical and founded in humanism. We respect the raw material entailed in each student and staff member and value dialogue, equality and diversity.

DK’s student intake is based on talent. This distinguishes DK from traditional universities.

We cultivate and value talent and challenge it by teaching our students to reflect on their own process and by teaching them to collaborate by completing tasks related to specific contexts of use, preferably in interaction with industry.

DK builds on the tradition of Danish Design and focuses on design that is meaningful.

We believe that relating to history and tradition enables the creation of something new.

The school’s approach to teaching is that we don’t provide the answer. We discover it together. At DK we work with tools, techniques, concepts and methods. We build on knowledge and research and emphasise sensory perception and experiments; uniting the hands and the mind.

DK has university status. We offer an academic setting that comprises a number of recognised researchers focusing on the emergent research field of design and a growing output of PhD projects. At the same time, we value professional practice and give priority to offering excellent workshop conditions enabling our students to work with the materials on a 1:1 scale. We require our school faculty to be practitioners in their field, and our esteemed visiting faculty insures inspiration from professional practice.
