“Updating the College of Design Library is not merely about modernizing infrastructure; it’s about empowering our community to thrive in a rapidly evolving academic landscape. By leveraging digital transformation, fostering flexible spaces, and prioritizing inclusivity, we can envision a dynamic hub of learning and creativity that inspires generations of designers, researchers, and innovators.”

Identifying Problems The first thing we did was examine the space, and identified some basic problem areas as a student of what we think could be improved. True progress was made during the tour, when Karen Dewitt pointed out the many pain points and draws of the space. We used that to help further our research and aim our design solutions towards.

Ideating After our tour of the library and reviewing the surveys on what people value in a library space, we discussed general thoughts and possible solutions for better utilizing the space, including implementing modern technology and adjusting the seating arrangements.

Preparing a proposal After completing initial ideation, we began to develop our proposal by refining our strongest concepts into more concise layout options for the library.

While preparing, we knew we wanted the flow of the space to be natural and intuitive for users and took into account factors like furniture placement, technology integration, easy access to materials, seating, volume, and more.

Design Statement A big question in our process was “What do you want the space to be” and it's hard to give just one answer. We want it to be a study space, a collaboration space, a one-stop shop.

But above all, we want it to be the hub for all design students, something previously lacking in the college. For those who want to meet, study, collaborate, shop and make.

Floor Plan Heustis, Schmitz, Elam

Harrye B. Lyons Design Library Redesign

GD 202 Settings, People, and Use

Current Floor plan prioritizes shelving space for books on either side of library

doesn't adequately accommodate both quiet and louder spaces

doesn’t utilize maximal space for student seating

contains one study room with TV

area for printer seating

has a central seating area for groups and individuals, and smaller seating area near the front

around 40 total student seats

Proposed Floor plan Main Level

shelves moved to one end of the library (books can be accessed through a mechanic shelf operating system)

moved study room with TV

seating nook (offices wouldn't be compromised)

central seating would stay the same but moved down

more individual seating near window

“readers corner” near entrance

area for printer seating

design store (front desk would move to other side)

60 seats total

The “why” When coming up with a brand for the library I thought back to what we wanted the space to be. I gathered the values we wanted the library to have and the students to recognize upon entering the space,

Calming

Refreshing

Revitalizing

Connected to nature

Flexible

Dynamic

Creative Flow

Qualities perfectly encompassed

by water.

Logo

This logo is clean and simple.

I wanted something that was recognizable while still working within NC State’s brand.

Another benefit of this simple design is its ability to be recolored in any of the brand colors, while still maintaining consistency and recognizability.

Color Story These bright colors help continue this theme of water and give the Design Library a unique color palette that stands out amongst the rest.

I thought it was important to have a color story that is not only vibrant and refreshing, but dynamic and diverse.

Brand Identity I also wanted to make a strong design choice that shows the precise and planned nature of design, by making all the assets, from murals to icons, grid based. By using this accompanied with a consistent color palette, you can make a variety of images that still align with the Library's brand.

I also wanted to drive home the Library's new ability to stay open 24 hours on weekdays by including motifs of the sun

and moon. Giving the space a brand with

an expansive and large feel including the deepest depths to the highest cloud.

Experiential Design Heustis, Schmitz, Elam

Experiential Design Experiential Design is bringing Graphic Design, most known for being in two dimensions, into the physical world. Through its use, we can not only have images and print media consistent with branding, but entire spaces too.

Open Night & Day

The Entrance

One major issue identified was the abundance of white walls in what is supposed to be a center for creative expression. I took every opportunity I could to transform the walls into murals or cohesive brand touchpoints.

I wanted to transform this otherwise black space, and turn it into an opportunity to grab the attention of students passing by.

Experiential Design Wayfinding and Wall Decor

With a new space, theres a need for some subtle direction telling students where things are. Not only is this helpful for pointing out directions for new visitors, but also highlighting some features that might be missed, even by recurring ones.

Marketing and Advertising Finally, once the brand is figured out, and the renovations are made, the only thing left to do is advertise.

This is one final way to help tie in branding and help reach out to those

who might have otherwise missed the Library’s placement. Something as simple as a well-placed poster and an Instagram post can help further the Library’s message and presence.

Design Store Heustis, Schmitz, Elam

Why a design store? It fills a lot of gaps

A common issue for design majors, especially those outside of GXD, is the inconvenience of getting materials for a project when the closet supply store is a far walk away in Talley.

It serves as a way to bring people to the design library, helping fulfill the goal of creating a hub for design students.

The department has expressed interest in creating design shops in the past, and a design supplies store is more likely to be successful than a C-store.

We asked students

"A crucial part of the design process for students is often what materials they have access to. The presence of a nearby supply store would permit students to think of how they can best realize their project while in the planning stage. It would also be a quick save if anything was forgotten back at the dorm!"
 -Dane, Sophomore

I think having a supply store in Brooks would be beneficial for all design students, as the store in Talley is a long distance away and having to transport supplies to and from there is often inconvenient. I believe having a place to get supplies directly near studio spaces would allow students, especially those without cars on campus, to access what they need more easily.

Store Experience How does it work?

As seen in the floor plan, the existing multipurpose room would be turned into a store stocked with supplies aspiring designers need. These supplies include, but are not limited to, paper in a multitude of sizes, pens, pencils, rulers, and sketchbooks.

Students would enter the space, gather their purchase, then bring it to the librarian’s desk to be checked out. This prevents the need to hire another employee, and creates a hub for all material items in the design library.

Name & Logotype When creating the name, I wanted to be considerate of all majors and minors within the college of design, wanting to pick an identity that could appeal to all.

First Draft was chosen as it positions the store as the first step in the design process, drawing in students to the space. Secondly, the concept of creating multiple drafts is inherently tied to all design majors, creating a wider appeal.

Brand Elements Aiming to mimic the dot pattern of notebook/ sketchbook, the shapes from the library are reimagined as drawings in said notebook.

The outlines of the shapes are used to create a variety of messy and irregular patterns, which represent the early stages of the design process.
