Impacts of Giant Devils Fig

Giant Devils Fig is prioritised as Containment in the North Coast Region.

It is a serious weed of grazing land and natural areas.

Under the NSW Biosecurity Act 2015, every person has a General Biosecurity Duty (GBD) to prevent, eliminate or minimise the biosecurity risk posed by weeds. Outcomes to demonstrate compliance with this legal responsibility in relation to Giant Devils Fig in the North Coast Region are outlined in the North Coast Regional Strategic Weed Management Plan (RSWMP). In the RSWMP, Giant Devils Fig is listed as a “containment priority” because it has a limited distribution in the region.

To ensure that Giant Devils Fig is managed in accordance with the RSWMP and detail how the desired outcomes can be achieved, the North Coast Regional Weed Committee (RWC) developed this plan. The committee comprised of representatives from the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI), NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), Crown Lands, Forestry Co-Operation of NSW, North Coast Local Land Services (LLS), North Coast Landcare and of the Local Control Authorities (LCAs) being Rous County Council (RCC), Clarence Valley Council, Coffs Harbour City Council (CHCC), Bellingen Shire Council (BSC), Nambucca Valley Council (NVC), Kempsey Shire Council (KSC), Port Macquarie, Hastings Council (PMHC), and the Lord Howe Island Board (LHIB).

The largest population of Giant Devil Fig occurs across the Richmond Valley Council, Ballina Shire Council, Lismore City Council, Kyogle Council, Byron Shire Council and Tweed Shire Council, Local Government areas (LGA’s). The local control authority for this area is Rous County Council. The infestations occurring within this are the “core infestation zone” for the region. In the Clarence Valley, Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Nambucca Valley, Kempsey and Port Macquarie Hastings (LGA) are less prevalent. There are no records of Giant Devils Fig on Lord Howe Island. These LGA’s including Lord Howe Island are in the exclusion zone. The “core infestation” and “exclusion zones” are shown on the Giant Devils Fig Management Zone Map.

The management objective for Giant Devils Fig in the North Coast region is to contain the spread of the weed from the core infestation zone and to continuously suppress and destroy the plant (working towards eradication) in the exclusion zone.

Feral deer aren’t fussy about where they live as long as there is food (gardens and crops are good, as well as native bushland), shelter (even your carport or back veranda will do) and friends (in numbers).

All landholders, no matter how you identify or what you use your land for, have a responsibility to monitor for feral deer and prevent them from causing impacts on your land and neighbouring land. This is part of your General Biosecurity Duty.
