Happy Thanksgiving! As I re flect on those I am grateful for this holiday, our readers and advertisers will be at the top of the list. Thank you for supporting our publica tion. We couldn’t publish a magazine without you!

November kicks off the holiday season. We encourage you to make your list and check it twice to include as many local purchases as you can. Shopping local supports our community and our economy. Many businesses now have online stores where you can make pur chases and either pick-up your packages or have them mailed. We’ve never had more options while shopping! However, there is nothing quite like seeing items in person, touching the fabrics, judging the quality, seeing the size of an item, or trying it on for fit. With local businesses, you can pick and choose how you shop.

Mark your calendars to attend Lowes Foods Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting on Friday, November 18th at 5:45PM. The parade will begin at 6PM. Santa’s float pulls up the end of the parade and will stop at Union Square to light the Christmas tree. It’s a great way to get in the holiday spirit! For several years, the November issue of Hickory Living has featured non-

profits in our ‘Tis the Season for Giving section. This year is no different, and we are happy to feature some worthy or ganizations in the arts. Starting on page 24, learn how the United Arts Council of Catawba County supports our artistic community and how they and other creative entities make our area a fun place to live.

Our cover story this month features Vitality’s Anti-Aging Center, Surgical Center, and V-Infusion. These busi nesses live up to their slogan of “Where Health and Beauty Meet” knowing that one affects the other. Read their story starting on page 12 to learn about all the latest treatments they offer!

Beef and Vegetable Soup

It’s Fall y’all, and that means it’s Soup Season! Is there anything better than a warm bowl of hearty soup on a chilly day? I think not!

With only 7 ingredients, this simple Beef & Vegetable Soup is hearty enough to be a meal, and made super EASY with a combo of canned & fresh veggies, ground beef, and the secret ingredient – classic V8 juice! If you are looking for ways to stretch a pound of beef to feed the whole family a delicious, wholesome meal, then look no further!

Simply brown your ground beef and add fresh veggies. Sauté for about

five minutes, then add the canned ingredients, a bottle of V8, and simmer for 1 hour. That’s it! You can easily double the recipe if you’re feeding a crowd or want to freeze some for later.

I have been making this one on repeat, and I bet you will too! Enjoy!

Beef and Vegetable Soup

Servings:6-8 • Prep time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 1 hour 10 minutes

INGREDIENTS

1 lb. ground beef

1 onion - small diced

3 carrots - chopped

2 medium potatoes or 12 small Yukon gold potatoes - cut in bite size pieces

1 (46 oz.) can tomato juice (such as V8)

1 (14 oz.) can whole kernel corn - drained

1 (14.5 oz.) can green beans - drained

½ tsp garlic salt

½ tsp black pepper

¼ tsp grated fresh ginger (optional)

For garnish: Fresh chopped parsley

DIRECTIONS

In a large soup pot or Dutch oven, brown ground beef over medium heat, until no longer pink. Re move browned beef and drain most of the grease before adding beef, onion, carrots & potatoes to the pot. Sauté until beginning to soften, about 5 minutes.

Add in tomato juice, drained corn & green beans. Add ginger and season to taste with salt & pepper. Bring to a boil, then adjust heat to low and simmer for about an hour, stirring occasionally.

Delicious served with crusty bread or cornbread muffins!

With the holidays fast approaching, it’s a great time to refresh and recharge your appearance and energy levels at Vitality Anti-Aging Center.

Annual Open House

Whether you’ve visited Vitality before or are a new patient, the annual open house is a “must-do.” Vitality Anti-Aging Center’s annual open house will be Novem ber 17 and everyone is welcome to attend.

According to Grace, “All of the reps for our services and products will be in the center, and this fun event will also be rewarding.” The Center will offer lowestof-the-year pricing on services as well as products. “Everyone always has fun at our annual open house,” she continued. “However, the event does have limited attendance, so you should call to make a reservation as soon as possible.”

Join the Injectable Revolution

There are many new procedures and types of inject ables that can improve your appearance. Lori Win stead, practice coordinator and office manager, shared one of the most exciting new injectable treatments with me: PRF, aka platelet-rich fibrin.

PRF is another revolution in the use of platelets, cell fragments found in our own blood which play an important role in blood clotting and healing. PRF is similar to Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP) because it starts with parts of your own blood.

Grace explained the benefits of PRF to me. According to her, PRF “is the next generation treatment of platelet concentrate. PRF is a fibrin matrix comprised of platelet cytokines, growth factors, and cells used to help promote skin rejuvenation, hair growth, and wound healing.”

FEATURING The Arts

For the past several years, we have focused our November issue on non-profit organiza tions and ways we can help to support their endeavors. This year, we are happy to fea ture the arts in Catawba County. We are very blessed to have such a vibrant creative com munity. No matter what your economic status, ethnicity, or age, the arts bring us together like nothing else can. A thriving arts scene benefits more than the artists themselves. People want to be a part of a community where they can work and play. Other than revenue from ticket and admission sales, businesses gain revenue from both locals and out-of-town visitors at

tending events. They may go to dinner, or rent a hotel room, or do a little shopping while they are out and about. The artists buy supplies or take classes. The hosting venues need sup plies, services, and materials to function. By supporting the arts, you are supporting the economic and creative growth of our commu nity.

On the following pages, you will find out how you can assist these non-profits through volun teering and donations. You will also read how these organizations support our artists and our community’s creative atmosphere.

Recently, Hickory Living’s Kathy Wheeler interviewed Ingrid Keller, executive director of the United Arts Council of Catawba County. Ingrid shared who the Arts Council supports and how we can help.

What does the United Arts Council of Catawba County do for our creative community and our community as a whole?

Our mission at the United Arts Council of Catawba County is to transform and strengthen the cultural life of our com munity through grants, marketing, fundraising, advocacy, and education. We also provide services like professional de velopment opportunities, advocacy, and marketing for local cultural organizations, individual artists, and creative events.

For the community as a whole, we enable diverse forms of art and culture to thrive and ensure broad accessibility and engagement with the arts culturally, socially, educationally, and economically. We connect our elected officials and business leaders to the arts in our community, and we lead cultural planning and the promotion of arts-friendly poli cies. We also impact economic health and growth through vibrant arts programs.

Currently, we are conducting an economic impact study to quantify the value of the arts in our community. The last study, done in 2015, revealed that our nonprofit arts and culture organizations in Catawba County are worth $49.2 million in economic impact.

Who are the grants and scholarships open to and what is the process for applying?

We have many grants and scholarships available for both organizations and individual artists. We welcome new ap plicants and encourage projects that cater to underserved audiences. Each funding opportunity comes with its own set of guidelines and process for applying. All of them are listed on our website at https://artscatawba.org/grantsscholarships.

In addition to grants, how do you support individual artists?

We promote artists through the Artist Directory on our website and in our ArtBeat publication. Exhibitions and art

ist collective meetings are listed on our website calendar. Through our Art Wall, we feature exhibits that rotate every three months. Currently through December 2022, we have the work of Missy Cleveland (pictured above), who received a 2022 Innovative Art ist Grant. Missy created the illustrations for a children’s book of poems written by Scott Owens. This exhibit features her original works for the book, as well as other pieces from her collection.

What organizations do you support and how?

Each year, we conduct a United Arts Fund campaign, which provides operating support for our eight funded affiliate organi zations: Catawba Science Center, The Green Room Community Theatre, Hickory Choral Society, Hickory Community Theatre, Hickory Landmarks Society, Hickory Museum of Art, Historical Association of Catawba County, and Western Piedmont Sym phony. We are a major source of grants for these institutions, plus our 58 associate organizations include groups like Hickory Ballet & Performing Arts and the Newton Performing Arts Center. We support events like the Footcandle Film Festival and Hickory

Playground, plus arts programming of organizations whose primary mission is not cultural, such as the Art in the Park festival organized by the Women’s Resource Center and arts-based programs for Seniors Morning Out by Senior Nutri tion Services. In addition to funding, we provide workshops and professional development opportunities geared toward cultural organizations. We also list cultural events on our web site calendar and advocate on behalf of our arts community.

Tell me about your upcoming fundraiser Jingle Bell BASH. The Jingle Bell BASH (Benefitting Arts, Science and His tory) is our signature fundraiser, always the first Monday in December, so it is December 5th this year. It is a draw-down raffle with the chance to win a grand prize of $10,000! The second prize is $1,500 and third prize is $1,000. One ticket is $130, which admits two people to the party with compli mentary wine and beer, offerings from area caterers, a silent auction featuring original works of art from local artists and MORE! Doors open at 5:30 and the dress for the event ranges from evening cocktail to business casual to Christmas kitsch (think: ugly sweaters). You do not have to be present at the event to win. Anyone who doesn’t feel well or is not comfortable in crowds can support by purchasing a ticket and staying home the evening of the event.

Hickory Museum of Art (HMA) is North Carolina’s second oldest are museum and was founded by Paul Whitener. HMA is our community’s gateway to a world of new ideas, bringing people together, and inspiring creativity through the power of art. From regional, national, contemporary folk art, and ground-breaking exhibitions to education pro grams, HMA presents unique opportunities for people to meet, explore, and have a new conversation. Those encoun ters happen in their galleries, programs, and events every day, and our community grows stronger because of it.

GuildHMA volunteers and donors play a huge role in mak ing the museum successful. Volunteers assist in education, shopHMA, HMA’s office, and with museum fundraising events. Every donation, large or small, makes a difference. Whether it’s through a gallery box donation, annual fund gift, memorial/tribute contribution, or through a planned giving commitment, donations raise the bar for exhibitions, collections, and make it possible to provide free admission to everyone in our community.

The first floor features artwork from HMA’s permanent col lection in “collectHMA: Paul’s Process” and “collectHMA: Pacific | Atlantic.”

The second floor features “Mel Chin: SEA to SEE” as well as “InsideOut Performance Fabric + Seaqual® Initiative.”

“An Evening with Mel Chin” on November 4 features an Artist Talk in the Drendel followed by a dessert reception with the artist.

Gingerbread House Party (December 3) and Holiday Orna ment Workshops (K-2nd Grade/November 29) and 3rd-6th Grade/December 6) are huge hits with the kids!

Established in 1949

Hickory Community Theatre (HCT) was founded in the spring of 1949 but planning meetings and small perfor mances started the previous year. The first full length production, You Can’t Take It With You, was performed in October 1949 in the auditorium at Hickory City Hall. This has been the theatre’s home ever since.

HCT brings 10,000 to 12,000 visitors to downtown Hickory every year. It is second only to Oktoberfest. Theatre patrons dine at downtown restaurants and frequently return the next day to visit the unique stores they have discovered.

HCT welcomes over 300 volunteers annually and gives them the opportunity to explore their own creativity or support the creativity of others. Theatre is a collaborative art form, combining literature, music, and visual art to create a living cultural experience. The volunteers who act in pro ductions come from all walks of life. HCT is a place where a diverse group of people can come together to create art.

In a normal season, over 32,000 people attend shows and educational programming or volunteer at The Green Room Community Theatre. These patrons stay to shop or dine and bring a great economic boost to the City of Newton and Catawba County.

Something for Everyone

The variety of The Green Room’s shows allows people from ages six and up the chance to audition. The Theatre offers classes, camps, and workshops for ages Pre-K through 12th grade. In addition, they offer adult education classes includ ing audition preparation and special effects makeup, as well as seminars on theatrical topics of interest.

Field trips are available to area students to attend shows uniquely suited to various age groups. These are offered at a discounted group rate and are often the only opportunities some students have to experience live theatre.

How You Can Support the Theatre

As a community theatre, all of the actors and stage crews are volunteers. The Green Room heavily relies on volunteers for their board of directors, box office workers, ushers, and all areas of technical assistance (costumes, props, set painting, etc).

Season tickets allow patrons to choose which shows they would like to attend. Corporate sponsorships are available at all levels and are vital in maintaining quality standards at affordable prices.

Western Piedmont Symphony (WPS) is the professional orchestra of North Carolina’s western foothills.
