Show those legs WithConfidence Do you limit your wardrobe to garments that cover bulging and discolored veins? Do you suffer from leg swelling, itching, heaviness, leg pain or leg sores?

Dr. Thompson with The Center for Advanced Vein Care can erase those blemished and bulging veins permanently! If left untreated, Varicose Veins can progress to a more serious venous disease. Modern treatment of varicose veins includes endovenous thermal ablation. This technique involves placing a small catheter directly into the vein, followed by laser or radio frequency energy to the vein. In addition, injection therapy, ultrasound guided injection therapy, or ambulatory phlebectomy (removal of veins using micro hooks) may be required.

Welcome to the

February Issue

F

ebruary is the month of love and passion. Couples will celebrate their love on Valentine’s Day. Families will passionately watch the Super Bowl together on the seventh, and we will get much needed advice this month on keeping a healthy heart since February is American Heart Month. Whether you’ve been in a relationship for years or just a few months, the effort you put forth to make Valentine’s Day special will not go unrewarded. Since the holiday exists for the purpose of expressing your love, it might make for a bad day if you miss the opportunity. If you need some ideas, consider breakfast in bed and his or her favorite takeout for a nice dinner at home. If you love to cook, make it a homemade meal. A visit to a local bakery can add something decadent for dessert. A couple’s spa day, flowers, and chocolates are usually always appreciated Since the 14th falls on a Sunday this year, maybe you can get away for the weekend. Couples who travel together,

have fun together. Make plans in advance to go back to a special locale—a cabin in the woods, a bungalow at the coast, a fancy uptown hotel—some place where your memories burst with happiness. Where did your love begin? Where have you shared significant moments in your relationship? Reminisce about how you met, your journey together, and where you want your lives to go next. Tell stories, laugh, cry—whatever comes up is part of your love story. Walking on the beach, handin-hand is the perfect time to connect, even in the cool of February. Of course, adventuring together to a new destination can also bring a couple together through the joy of discovery. Get out there, just go together! In this issue of Hickory Living, you will find a decluttering article on page 20. We can all benefit by simplifying our lives with less clutter! Read our heart health article on page 14. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, so it’s important to spend time focusing on your health and knowing your numbers.

Our health care workers and physicians do a wonderful job taking care of us. We are proud to have a special section this month that highlights some of the top-notch providers in our area. Check out our cover story on Helton, Cody & Associates, PLLC. Their attorneys are your advocate when you need one the most! On page 18, Pure Reflection MedSpa is our business spotlight this month. They are making some exciting changes that you don’t want to miss! Dr. Vickie Lovin started the spa in 1997, and Pure Reflection is one of the longest standing spas in the Hickory area. I’m hoping we get more snow in February! Get outdoors this month and enjoy the cool crisp air. Curl up by the fire and read a magazine or book with a cup of coffee, tea, or cocoa. Enjoy the final days of winter. Spring will be here before you know it! Thank you for reading the February issue of Hickory Living magazine.

Blair Cody’s Style of Family Law By Kristie Darling

“Blair Cody represents his clients in the very same way he would work with his own family members,” Lyndon Helton told me. “Protecting people through our family law practice is one of the most important areas of our work, and I wouldn’t have decided to partner with Blair if I didn’t believe he was the best family law attorney out there. Without a doubt, I wanted him as a partner.” Lyndon had only respect and strong recommendations for his partner, and my

takeaway is that Lyndon is extremely pleased with his decision. WHAT IS FAMILY LAW? Challenges families face these days can require representation by an attorney— separation, contested and uncontested divorce, equitable distribution of marital assets, disputes over child support and visitation, alimony, paternity issues, guardianship questions, rights and issues that unmarried couples deal with,

same-sex family concerns, child abuse, domestic violence. It’s a long list, and wherever your interest lies, you want an attorney who will fight for you, not just go through the motions. Blair Cody is that attorney. His dedication to the welfare of his clients is well-regarded, and he takes on every case with the goal to win the best possible outcome. Lyndon believes that Blair learned the lessons of the hard fight in college, HICKORY LIVING • FEBRUARY 2021

playing football for the Bears at Lenoir-Rhyne. Blair was selected captain his senior season and was selected as an all-conference performer, as well as a preseason academic All-American. “Just as he did as team captain, Blair takes this work seriously. In all areas of his life,” Lyndon said, “he’s one of the most competent people I know…he’s an overachiever, and he hates to lose. Blair’s strong work ethic reminds me of General Douglas MacArthur’s remarks, ‘On the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that on other days, on other fields, will bear the fruits of victory.’ Blair is always on a mission to win for you.”

With Blair, everyone and every issue they face get the same high level of attention and service. “Blair has represented family members of some of our staff, and, of course, he took his task very seriously, just like he would undertake your case. He’s fair, smart, and relentless,” Lyndon shared. “When people call on me to help them navigate these critical challenges, I know they are struggling to understand what’s going on and to know everything necessary will be done to get the best result. They need help getting into a positive place to move forward with their life,” Blair said. “It’s fulfilling when I get my client results they had hoped for but didn’t expect.”

Blair shared this story: “A recent client, a young dad, had been to court years before, and custody of his daughter had been placed with her mother’s parents. Both my client and his ex-wife were very young when they separated. He came to me to find out if he could do anything to increase his visitation or possibly get primary custody—I wanted to help. My client had made significant strides since entry of the last order. He was now better able to address his daughter’s needs. While it wasn’t quick or easy, my young dad stayed the course. He committed to see this case through to the end, praying for a good outcome. After a multi-day trial and more than a year later, my client received news he had hoped for but didn’t expect. The judge transferred custody to my young father. His time with his daughter increased—he would have primary custody and would be making day-to-day decisions for her. I just received a family Christmas card from this client, and without hesitation, I can honestly say it was the best present anyone could have given me. It’s a reminder to me that my work and profession change lives.” PREPARATION IS EVERYTHING Blair, Lyndon, and their associate attorneys, Chris Cordes and Heather Higgins, each believe that preparation is key to getting a successful result for their clients. “You can only

do well and win in court if you start with excellent preparation ahead of time to get to court. We win or lose cases based on the research and prep work we do,” Lyndon explained. “That said, Blair’s self-education—his continuing education—is never-ending.” Blair likes how Vince Lombardi put it: “It is not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that leads to success.” Blair’s preparation began at North Carolina Central University Law School where he was selected by his peers as president of his law school class. He worked in the Durham County district attorney’s office under the third-year practice rule prior to his third year. After graduating, Blair moved back to Hickory and started practicing law with two firms before opening his own practice in January 2006. Last January, Lyndon offered him a partnership at Helton, Cody & Associates. Blair is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, numerous legal organizations, and is a lifelong member of Plateau United Methodist Church in Vale. When Blair is not at the office or working from home, he truly enjoys spending time with his mother, father, close friends and, of course Bristol, his seven-

year-old English Bulldog. Bear football at L-R is high on his list of after-hours enjoyment. A CLIENT-FIRST APPROACH No matter what legal issue you need help with, at Helton, Cody you will be treated as you deserve—with respect, diligence, and attention to the details of your unique case. The team takes your case personally and works professionally at every step. You will speak directly with an attorney who can answer your questions right away. Taking the time to get to know clients and their families fully is part of their culture because that is how cases are won, how solutions are achieved. “Our clients are not just case numbers,” Blair said, “they are people with legitimate problems they need help with. We represent people who come from all walks of life. Children, teens, young adults, grandparents, anyonecan need legal counsel and require resolution for their issues. Your success is our success.” COMPREHENSIVE LEGAL SERVICES The attorneys at Helton, Cody & Associates have a broad range of experience in many legal practice areas. In addition to family law, they work in personal injury, criminal defense, workers’

compensation, Social Security disability, DWI, and traffic violations. “Before we established this practice, we each were successful in our own right. We’ve been attorneys collectively for almost 50 years. Our goal is to be our community’s go-to family law practice, as well as well-respected specialists in these other areas. We have a solid track record across the board,” Lyndon said. “We’re confident we provide comprehensive legal representation as good or better than you can get in Charlotte, Raleigh… anywhere around.” Everyone struggling with any of these difficult areas says the same thing: “I just want it to be over!” The trick is to get your issues resolved with an outcome that meets your needs, financially and emotionally, for years to come. That’s why Helton, Cody & Associates should be your first call when facing a legal dispute in your life. These attorneys have the experience and dedication to get you where you want to be.

Take Care Of Your Heart By Kristie Darling

February, with Valentine’s Day as its highlight, is appropriately named American Heart Month. Heart disease kills over 2,200 people each day in the U.S. The good news is that 80 percent of cardiovascular diseases can be prevented with simple lifestyle changes. Take a look at this advice: ©iStockphoto.com | kerdkanno

SCHEDULE A CHECKUP Regular checkups are crucial in staying heart healthy. Annual screenings for blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglycerides are recommended for everyone. EAT SMART A healthy diet can minimize problems because obesity is a strong factor in development of heart disease. The DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) is a good place to start. Rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, with some nuts, fish, and poultry added in, DASH can help you keep heart disease from affecting your health. Plus, with extra pounds gone, you’ll have more energy and in general, feel lots better. To change eating habits: • Begin slowly and write down your measurable goals—adopt a couple of healthy new behaviors each month. • Choose foods with lots of soluble fiber, like beans, oats, grains, nuts, and fruits. Eating foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fatty fish, is a good idea. • Too much salt can lead to high blood pressure. Be aware that processed and fast foods are usually high in salt. 14

HICKORY LIVING • FEBRUARY 2021

• Make water your beverage of choice. • A glass of wine each day is fine for most people, but excess drinking is bad news for the heart.

eating four hours prior to bedtime, exercise daily, go to bed at the same time, and nix watching TV or working in your devices in bed.

GET MOVING Physical activity burns calories, helps with weight loss, and contributes to a healthy heart. Aerobic exercise like walking, biking, jogging, swimming, working out with a treadmill, rowing machine or elliptical is great, but start slowly to avoid injuries. Work up to exercising 30 minutes a day at least five days a week.

MANAGE STRESS Meditation or prayer and hobbies like knitting, sewing, or woodworking will help improve all aspects of your health and your life. Yoga is a great way to maintain flexibility and relieve stress at the same time.

STOP SMOKING Even one cigarette a day is one too many. Smoking causes one of every four deaths related to cardiovascular disease. This undesirable habit can raise triglycerides, lower good cholesterol, block blood flow to the heart, damage cells, increase buildup of plaque, and cause thickening and narrowing of blood vessels. Find support to help you stop smoking…your heart will thank you. GRAB SOME ZZZs Each good night’s sleep helps guard against heart disease, and exercise can help. Seven to nine hours a night is optimal. To achieve better sleep, stop

WARNING SIGNS Learn the warning signs of heart problems. Serious symptoms to pay immediate attention to are chest pain, particularly chest pain that occurs when you exert yourself physically; pain radiating to the arm, jaw, or back; and sudden onset of shortness of breath. Severe perspiration or swelling of the feet and legs are also reasons to quickly seek medical attention. Remember that the faster you get to a hospital, the more of your heart muscle can potentially be saved during a heart event. Let’s all get heart healthy this year! Simplify Your Life

By Decluttering Your Surroundings By Kristie Darling

So, there’s modern minimalism and there’s old fashioned cozy. There’s a “place for everything—everything in its place” and there’s “if it isn’t in sight, it doesn’t exist for me,” or “less is more” versus “I need these 86 Amazon Prime boxes…something might come up.” And, good for you if your box collection comes to mind…you can move some stuff out already! Truth be told, you’re probably somewhere in-between these extremes, and you might be fine with the way your house looks, or it might make you crazy. That’s our personality speaking up, and if you’re inclined to free yourself from clutter that makes you uncomfortable or is a trip hazard, this article might help. Let’s dig in. DECLUTTERING AS THERAPY De-cluttering is different from tidying up, cleaning surfaces, and sorting drawers. Decluttering or moving to the minimalist 20

HICKORY LIVING • FEBRUARY 2021

side of housekeeping is intentionally living with only the things we really need. Ask yourself these questions: What are the objects that support me and my family? What can we do without? Start with paying attention. Stand in your living room (bedroom, office, kitchen) and visually scan. Prioritize in your mind things you MUST HAVE. The sofa, yes…all those throw pillows, maybe not. The bookshelf, yes…the knickknacks, stacks of old magazines, bowls of dried-up potpourri, keys you don’t know where they belong…really? Be cutthroat in your assessment. Have you used this item in the last few months? In years? Is the sentimental attachment worth it if these plastic flowers are faded beyond recognition? Does that photo on the end table make me crazy? Then, get out those Prime boxes and put them to their highest use…pack stuff up. Decide, as you’re filling boxes, what you want to donate,

offer to friends and family, dump, Marketplace, eBay, yard sale, or ceremoniously torch. It’s OK to put some items in a box to just move elsewhere in the house or garage. Just make sure that it’s worth keeping, that it truly has purpose in your life. Remove excess possessions that distract you from focusing on what’s really important. ARTISTIC APPROACH TO ORGANIZING So, after usefulness, think about efficiency; think about beauty. Is my home set up to make life easier, or am I constantly losing things, defeatedly looking for something? When I start a project, is the first half-hour, me running around collecting the tools for my task? How often do I buy another bottle of glue because I can’t find the last one I bought? Organizing can be as simple as deciding which things go together and where

they belong. So, think about what’s available on hand that can work as organizing tools. You don’t need to run out and buy a bunch of paraphernalia…please, that’s a last resort. Do you already have baskets or totes you can repurpose to hold toys, craft stuff, makeup, or books? Can you eliminate some paper clutter by using electronic means of saving info? If you turned that table or bookshelf into a desk, would that make the business side of life easier? Do you need a file cabinet? Can you devote a cupboard or closet to things you don’t use much, but still need access to, rather than on the counter, floor, or a corner of the kitchen table? Once everyone knows where everything belongs, it makes it easy. Establish a drop zone, a place you can put stuff until you have time to really put it away. You and the kids might have a place for toys, a place for clothes, school projects, or papers. There’s the bottom step for things that must go upstairs. Then, put everything away daily. The exception to this rule is—there’s no dropping off place for trash—it goes straight into the can as soon as it’s deemed junk or trash. Then, when most everything in your house is something you truly need or totally love, everything around you gains value. Keeping an organized and aesthetically pleasing home is a great lesson for kids, too. You’ll be teaching them how to take care of things they care about. I’m not saying don’t make messes, lordy—that’s how some of the best living happens. But, let that mess from building a blanket tent over the dining chairs or cooking up a baked Alaska be a way to create smiles, family fun, and a partnership in getting things back in order. Again, your children will learn a lot.

A key piece of equipment is the inhouse CT scanner. It creates a highly detailed, three-dimensional reconstruction of head and neck anatomy, greatly improving the surgical planning process. Thanks to the practice’s fully equipped surgical suites, most patient procedures can be done in-house. “One of the advantages we have over many practices is that we can actually sedate patients or put them to sleep,” Dr. Brown said. “Many patients wake up and ask when the procedure is going to start…we tell them we’re already done.” Drs. Brown and Neuwirth are both available to patients 24 hours, seven days a week. “One of us is always in one of our two offices, in Hickory or Morganton,” Dr. Neuwirth said. “We’re also on call, so if there was a facial trauma or infection, we could be called in. We’re two of the only doctors I know who call patients the evening of surgery to make sure they’re doing okay. We want to help immediately if there are questions or concerns.” When you need exceptional oral surgery, contact Brown & Neuwirth, Oral & Cosmetic Surgery Center. These compassionate surgeons will take care of you just like they’d take care of their own family.
