Show those legs with Confidence Do you limit your wardrobe to garments that cover bulging and discolored veins? Do you suffer from leg swelling, itching, heaviness, leg pain or leg sores?

Dr. Thompson with The Center For Advanced Vein Care can erase those blemished and bulging veins PERMANENTLY! If left untreated, Varicose Veins can progress to a more serious venous disease. Modern treatment of varicose veins includes endovenous thermal ablation. This technique involves placing a small catheter directly into the vein, followed by laser or radio frequency energy to the vein. In addition, injection therapy, ultrasound guided injection therapy, or ambulatory phlebectomy (removal of veins using micro hooks) may be required.

Welcome to the

April issue. The weather is going to be 70° the whole month of April, with nothing but sunny skies...April Fools! Don’t put away your winter clothes just yet; you will need them this month on those chilly, rainy days. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, we will get about 1-1/2 inches of rain in the Appalachians (one inch below average), and the temperature will be two degrees lower than average at 48°.

Do you need a reason to celebrate in April? No worries, April is full of national holidays that will give you plenty of reasons to have fun both indoors and out: Beer Day is the 7th, Siblings Day the 10th, Easter the 12th, Pet Day the 11th, and Earth Day the 22nd. April is Hickory Living’s wedding issue. You will find some good advice on wedding planning, 2020 trends, and lots of advertisers who can make that planning easier. We also feature a wedding that shows you can honor tradition while making it your own. The reception was held first! Parents, if you are planning summer activities for your children, 4

check out our Summer Camp section starting on page 42. There are so many fun things to do in the Hickory area during summer break! We recommend that you register your children early, as space is limited at some camps! I’ll be honest, there are a few I would like to attend! If you need a chaperone, let me know. For those of us who don’t have a green thumb, in this issue, you will find advice on choosing low maintenance plants that thrive in our area. Ladies, there is an article with 2020 fashion trends that you will enjoy. Vintage is in! Also, check out the tips on lowering your environmental footprint. Earth Day is a day designated for reflection on our habits and how we impact the planet. Hopefully, it will inspire you to make good choices. Thanks so much for reading Hickory Living magazine.

First Aid for the Hapless Horticulturalist

No-Fail Flower Finds for

North Carolina By Shirley Moore

April Showers Bring May Flowers. Even though it’s still a bit cool, our attention naturally turns to flower gardening when the fourth month of the year rolls around. But some of us have more luck gardening than others. If plants shrivel and wither with the wave of your hand, you may have the dreaded black thumb. And North Carolina’s steaming-hot summers can make matters worse and really test your skills. If this description fits you, you may need help with some fool-proof, nofail plants. Experts recommend these plants for people with little to no luck at gardening. ©iStockphoto.com | Darumo

Lantana

Verbena

Portulaca

Lantana plants, which can be grown as annuals or perennials, feature round clusters of colorful flowers. Lantana looks great in containers because of its vine-like trailing ability.

Also grown as an annual or perennial, this plant comes in many colors and is drought- and heat-tolerant. Petunias, also come in a variety of colors and take more care, but are still popular.

A succulent that can withstand drought and heat. These low-growing, fleshy plants feature brilliant, bright flowers. The take full sun, but they can live in partial shade. Portulaca can be grown as annuals or perennials.

Black-eyed Susan Tall and tolerant of different conditions, these flowers radiate happiness. In fact, they symbolize encouragement and motivation. This makes them excellent choices for bouquets and cut-flower arrangements. These perennials thrive in full sun and well-drained soil. 10

HICKORY LIVING • APRIL 2020

Impatiens and Begonias Impatiens are short plants with brightly colored blooms, including hot pinks and fiery reds. Known for their somewhat waxen appearance, begonias’ blooms are brightly colored; the showy plants have fibrous root systems. Both impatiens and begonias are classified as perennials. Gardeners often grow them as annuals because they can’t tolerate frost.

Getting Down And Dirty Speaking of soil, before you start planting, it’s a good idea to amend or improve your soil. North Carolina’s infamous sticky, heavy clay dirt doesn’t break down nutrients needed for plant growth very well. Clay soil lacks air pockets and drains slowly, which decreases a plant’s ability to breathe. You can enhance clay soil by adding substances like: Composted manure (enriches soil and improves aeration and moisture retention) Peat moss (absorbs water and slowly releases it for use by plant roots) Lime (to adjust soil pH to proper levels)

Whether it’s resin or metal, rustic or modern, urn-style or box-style, there’s bound to be pots and planters out there that suit your taste, décor, and style.

When to Plant But wait a few weeks before planting anything. In April, the Hickory region can still experience cold snaps. Always wait to plant until the last frost. Usually, around Mother’s Day is a good idea.

Put It In A Pot If amending the soil sounds like too much work, try your hand at container gardening. These days, pots come in many colors, shapes, and designs.

ver the years brick and mortar stores have felt the impact of online sales; however, Killians remains a solid destination in Hickory. It’s a truly unique business. First, the hardware store is owned by women. You would be hard pressed to find anyone more knowledgeable about lawn equipment than Sharon Killian Radke and Susan Killian Kirby. They worked alongside their dad growing up at the hardware store and are the third generation of Killians to own the store. Second, their daughters Jennifer Gott and Whitney Kirby are continuing the Killian legacy and are very hands on with all aspects of the business. Third, because Killians has been family owned for 67 years, family and community are important to 12

them. They have personal connections with most of their customers. Some were friends with their father, Elmer; others they grew up with or remember when they were born! Their legacy involves so much more than hardware. They have developed traditions along the way—some have evolved, just like the business. Santa still comes to Killians, and customers who sat on Santa’s lap as children, now bring their kids. The museum of antique cars and memorabilia is opened to the public each year. Their Annual Pro Day helps landscaping professionals with certifications and education. For over 40 years, Toro has helped Killians provide high exposure commercial zero turn mowers to organizations each year. “The Toro Company has been key in helping us serve our community. Our relationship with them has allowed us to support nonprofits like Rising Hope Farm, Camp Linn Haven, Catawba Valley Community College, and local churches by helping them maintain their properties,” Sharon explained. “We also support local first responders with programs such as Toro’s American Heroes and Husqvarna’s Military Appreciation program. Like our father and grandfather ran this business in an honest, respectful way, so do we. It’s the personal relationships we’ve established that set us apart.”

THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE In this day and age of faceless computer interactions, Killians understands the importance of knowing and serving customers. They keep you up-to-date with information on their website, but there’s no substitution for the face-toface customer service they offer. With Killians, you get the best of both worlds. You’ll have peace of mind at Killians. Your equipment will be set-up and serviced, and you’ll get a demo of your proper starting procedures. Killians stocks parts and maintenance kits for all units they sell. You also receive preferential service, in or out of warranty, for any equipment you purchase there. “We aren’t here to just sell you a mower or trimmer. We want to make sure you are happy with your purchase, since more than likely, we’ll become friends,” Sharon said with a smile. “Jennifer and Whitney work closely with customers, but I’m most excited about how they’re bringing new skills to this work, always thinking of improvements,” Sharon said. While they are often the fresh faces and knowledgeable clerks behind the counter, Jennifer and Whitney have also enabled Killians to adopt new technology and embrace some changes that the 2000s require. “We work in all departments, but improvements in our website and our social

media presence probably have the most impact,” Whitney explained. “We’re still the old-fashioned store that personally answers the phone, but today, the convenience of having online information and social media marketing is critical.” Indeed, Killians’ comprehensive parts department’s growth and excellent reputation is supported by Killians Online Ebay Store and Amazon ordering.

SPEAKING OF PARTS I’ve been told that Howard Mourglea runs Killians’ Extensive (with a capital E) parts department like an Army general. Since 2004, Howard has been growing the inventory and keeping everything current. The parts storage area is floor to ceiling bins and bays full of numbered parts of every type and brand. The old-timey feeling you get in this expansive backroom is misleading: inventory and parts sales are managed by computer, with hundreds of shipments a day going out nationwide, some to international customers. “I believe we have the largest parts inventory in the Southeast,” Howard told me, “and our 13-year-old Ebay store has introduced us around the world. There’s no reason to look anywhere else.” If Howard doesn’t have it, he’ll get it. Rigo Gasco has grown up in hardware, and as a Spanish-speaking salesman, he helps make ordering and purchasing by phone, online, or in the store easier for many. “We want our customers to be satisfied every time they need something.” Check out stores. ebay.com/killians-online when you need parts.

HARDWARE, LAWNCARE, AND MORE Bruce Hartsell has been with Killians for 30 years, and he’s just now starting to slow down. “He’s cut back about onethird,” Sharon said. “but as lawn-care and hardware specialist, he’s still available to help you with everything from gardening, fertilizer, seeds, and pesticides, to all you need to know about hand tools, plumbing, electrical, and everything in between.” They hired John Valencia, who is bi-lingual, two-and-a-half years ago. “John has brought 10+ years’ experience with Lowe’s to our hardware floor and has helped improve inventory control and merchandising, making us very competitive with box stores. Our hardware department has expanded recently, and we’re proud of everything in this department,” Jennifer said. Photos, above, top to bottom: • Knowledgeable parts department staff–Pictured, Rigo Gasca, Randy Herman, and Howard Mourglea, parts manager • Bruce Hartsell and John Valencia are the friendly faces you will see in Killian’s hardware department. • Service writer, Marcus Benfield, washing a mower after it has had a full service. 14

LAWN AND GARDEN EQUIPMENT SHOWROOM Just take a look inside. If you’re the shopper who wants to see and feel before you buy, Killians’ showroom is for you! All new equipment arrives here from the impressive warehouse. Warehouse manager, Art Meadows, keeps new equipment moving from his on-site space to the showroom, and then to the customer. “When the sales team needs something

upstairs for a customer, it’s got to be ready, so I have to be organized,” he said. “Our reputation is at stake with every sale, so we work hard to surpass customers’ expectations,” Sharon continued. “Our brands are time-tested, top of the line, and we’re proud to represent these manufacturers. We stay involved in the industry,” she told me, “so our commercial and residential customers can benefit from all the information that’s out there.” With Killians’ strong partnership with the Toro Company over many years, it’s not surprising they have recently won sales awards. Additional brands you’ll find in the showroom are Echo, Husqvarna, Stihl, Briggs & Stratton, JRCO Attachments, Peco Lawn Vacs, Billy Goat, Excel Trailers, and my favorite, White Mountain ice cream makers!

SERVICE WHENEVER NEEDED Service manager, Scott Miller, takes pride in his team and their master-quality workmanship. “My team is six topnotch employees, three with master certification through eight manufacturers, plus max level certifications in others. Together we’re working on several 2020 goals: continue Killians Advantage Program with a new drive-through service program while you wait service, improved customer experience, and faster turn-around,” Scott told me. “We’re up-todate with the newest products, new information and techniques through training, continuing education, and continual hands-on experience.” In addition, the team offers commercial landscapers and lawn care businesses service within 24 business hours on new or used equipment. They care about your equipment just like you do. Killians’ service department is a Toro, Stihl, Briggs & Stratton, and Kohler master service dealer and certified service dealer for Echo and other manufacturers. Killians goes beyond what big box stores offer in service, competitive pricing, and personal attention. It’s much more than a hardware store—it’s a family friendly, heart of the community destination with the look, feel, and friendliness for a nostalgic shopping experience, while state of the art equipment, products, and advice keep up in 2020. It’s springtime, and at Killians you’ll find everything you need to be ready.

It’s back to the future with

Spring Fashion in 2020 By Shirley Moore | Photos provided by Splentique

T

he more things change, the more they stay the same. That could be the theme for 2020, as fashion takes steps back into the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s—think big collars, romantic, puffy sleeves, hot pants, crocheted garments, and embroidered tops. Fashionistas are even pulling oversized, boxy suit jackets, ripped jeans, and wide-legged pants (called palazzo back in the day) from the time warp.

Regina Stiltner, owner of Splentique Fashion Boutique in Hickory, has noticed the same. Retro-feminine looks in silks, crochet, and embroidery have been popular in her shop. “It’s nice to see a lot of these classics come back,” she said.

HICKORY LIVING • APRIL 2020

Laurel Jenkins, visual merchandiser for Aqua B Boutique, has noticed a general trend toward nostalgia. “I’ve been raiding my mother’s closet,” she joked. “We’re seeing lots of neon colors, a lot of embroidery, hot pink and bright greens and yellows,” she said. “Also, a lot of bell bottoms, acid-washed denim, and shorts with frayed ends.”

Don’t worry – the world hasn’t gone full Saturday Night Fever. Polyester ensembles with platform shoes won’t be gracing the runways this spring, as far as we can tell! But you will see some vintage-inspired looks.

Are you up to the challenge of staying fashionable and chic? Spice up your wardrobe with some of these items:

1 Hot pants (In the South, we

call them Daisy Dukes) – How to pull it off: Embroidered, with glitter or some other stylish “pop.” Pair with a sophisticated button-up shirt.

2 Puffy sleeves – How to pull it off: Either structured or flowing, they flatter most women and enhance the feminine look.

5 Wide-leg pants – How to pull

it off: The most important thing to remember is proportion. Pair wide legs with a tucked-in tailored shirt or a fitted jacket; if you’re petite, a roomy, billowy top might overpower the look. Despite what you’ve been told, almost anyone can wear wide legs with style. Regardless of how you wear them, make sure you feel confident in your outfit. “You almost forget how good people looked in a pair of wide-legged pants,” Regina said.

3 Crochet dresses and tops –

How to pull it off: Don’t let this crafty-looking detail scare you. This is not your grandmother’s crochet. It has a modern twist. 4 1960s and 1970s-inspired prints – How to pull it off: Let your inner hippy take over, and just have fun. If you opt for a bold print, tone down the accessories and shoes.

6 Big, bold, colorful jewelry – How to pull it off: Instead of wearing just gold and silver earrings, test out some color on your ears. Oversized hoops and chains are also making a comeback. The bigger and bolder, the better.

but some necklines are crew-cut or deeper V-shapes. You’ll typically find them in florals, but paisleys, solids, and geometrics also look great. Their full and tiered skirts, some with ruffles, really swing over cowgirl boots.

8 Acid wash – This 1980’s denim style is back. No, seriously, it is. How to pull it off: If you don’t want to take a trip in a time machine, try a subtle, more toned-down version of the look. You can rock an acidwashed jacket or shirt and look totally gnarly, rad, or fly…did I just say that?

Have fun with fashion!

7 Prairie and western dresses – How to pull it off: Looser and more flowy than other styles, prairie dresses feature high, mock necks,

Changing Our Habits for a

Better Planet By Kathy Wheeler

April 22nd is Earth Day. Although we should be dedicated every day to improving our environmental footprint on the earth, it’s a good day to start new habits. In many cases, as consumers, our purchasing power and public opinion dictates what is produced by industries. By making smart choices and letting our voices be heard, we can lessen the impact we have on our environment. Plastic is a big issue for our planet, and not all plastic is recyclable. According to an article published in 2018 on Forbes. com, there were 270,000 tons of plastic in the seas around the world. Not only is it impacting our wildlife, but our

22

environment is affected to the point that human health is in jeopardy. Re-think disposable. Disposable diapers, water bottles, and cleaning pads for our floors and furniture clutter landfills. Consider replacing these items with reusable products—washable instead of disposable. Plastic water bottles can be replaced with a stainless steel, refillable bottle. Use glass storage containers instead of plastic and reusable grocery bags instead of all the plastic bags provided at the grocery store. Manufacturers of bottled water are considering using aluminum cans, which still has a negative impact on the environment, so we will see what solution they come up with.

Re-think ordering online. All the gas and packing materials it takes to get products delivered to our door is astronomical. Instead shop local. Visit farmer’s markets for local produce and foods when possible, or better yet, plant your own garden. By being mindful of our consumption of power, water, and other resources, we can improve the world’s consumption as a whole—one responsible decision at a time. Below the National Ocean Service has developed an info graphic of 10 ways we can help. In a world where so much priority is put on convenience, what good is convenience if we have an uninhabitable planet?

John’s family had never celebrated New Year’s Eve together, and he thought it would be a perfect time to have a party and our wedding. We had such a great time.”

“John planned the whole wedding,” Renee said. “He told me that all I had to do was show up. He had a vision of what he wanted our wedding to be and worked with Suzie White, my friend since elementary school and our wedding director, to make it happen.

Unlike most receptions, the couple had their reception first so they could have the ceremony close to midnight. Guests ate from a wide variety of heavy hors d’oeuvres prepared by Kathy Bowman at Kathy’s Kreations, danced to DJ Faith Cribb from Happily Ever After Entertainment, and socialized with family and friends.

his past New Year’s Eve, while people were counting down and the ball was dropping in Times Square, John Bentley and Renee Bowman were saying “I do” and celebrating their love for each other with family and friends.

The wedding ceremony started on December 31st, and ended when they said their vows, a little after midnight, on New Year’s Day. Confetti cannons were spread amongst the guests, so when the couple was announced as man and wife, confetti rained in celebration. “It was such a mess to clean up,” Renee said laughing, “but it was so much fun and well worth it!” They ordered the cannons from Amazon. As soon as they received them, they set one off in their two-story foyer to see how festive they would be. “Confetti covered our second story landing! It was awesome!” Renee said. “Oz and Brenda Hefner were great to work with at Sapphire Hills Event Center,” said Renee. “We had about 100 guests, and their venue was perfect for us.” Not only did the couple purchase the groom’s ring from Oz’s Jewelers, Oz officiated their wedding. Sapphire Hill’s gorgeous staircase held poinsettias, and the flowers

for the reception and wedding were created by Donna Denegri at White Splendor. Renee’s brother and his wife, Johnathan and Vaedra Bowman, sang during the ceremony, and all the songs were chosen from the soundtrack of the movie, A Star is Born. After the ceremony, everyone enjoyed the couple’s first dance and cake cutting. The cake was created by Kiley’s Creations in Taylorsville and was different flavors. The bottom cake was vanilla, chocolate in the middle, and apple cinnamon on top all covered in buttercream icing. Renee tossed her bouquet from the staircase, and John tossed the garter sporting festive glasses that lit up. At the end of the night, sky lanterns were lit as a send-off for the bride and groom when they drove away to their happily-ever-after in a vintage 1934 Ford Coupe. This lovely send-off was the beginning of their life together and the perfect finale to their unforgettable New Year’s wedding.

SEVEN SENSATIONAL

WEDDING TRENDS for 2020 By Shirley Moore

It wasn’t that long ago when a bride’s idea of the perfect wedding featured a billowy princess gown, men in tuxedoes, and three-course sit-down dinners. Some of that tradition still exists. But in 2020, millennials and Generation Z-ers opt to put their own twist on one of the most important days of their lives. “A lot of them are going for comfort now,” said Tiffany Roper, owner of Hickory Wedding Planner. Finances, a longing for simpler times, and the quest to make their wedding one-of-a-kind has couples creatively shaking things up. These days, it’s not your mother’s wedding—or your sister’s or your friend’s. It’s uniquely yours. So, what’s hot? Pizza bars, all-inclusive venues, social media hashtags, among other things. If you’re planning your wedding, you can start here to learn about these trends. Whether you’re going for an intimate setting with just a few close family members and friends or the big blowout you’ve been dreaming of for years, we’ve got you covered. But before getting into that, first things first.

Show Me the Money Always establish a budget as part of your initial wedding plan, experts say. Without a goal in mind, it will be easy to overspend and overreach. A shared decision on the budget will make for a smoother process—and fewer regrets when the bills start rolling in.

Intimate and Meaningful Speaking of budgets, that leads us to one of the first big trends of 2020 – micro-weddings. These are smaller events with all the elements of a big wedding. With the average cost of a wedding in the United States soaring to nearly $40,000, millennial and Generation Z couples often look for ways to stay within their budget. They’re still spending plenty for the big day, just not as much. And, 32

they’re putting more thought into where the money goes. So, instead of serving guests the usual chicken, fish, or steak, they’ll choose to go with fun, comfort foods like pizza or tacos. “They may opt to include quirky features like selfie photo booths for guests to enjoy,” Tiffany said. These types of details personalize the event and make it more relaxing and less stressful, without the money worries.

Going All-in In a nod to the budget-conscious and those who want simplicity, more venues now offer an inclusive-option. Generally, all-inclusive venues provide a wedding planner, rentals, flowers, and even a DJ. Read the contract’s fine print carefully before you sign on, and understand what’s included and what’s not. “It’s just easier to have everything in one place,” Tiffany said. “You don’t have multiple contacts. That’s the reason country clubs have become popular venues again.”

Say YES to the Right Dress—or Pantsuit Perhaps the bride’s biggest expense—and most important—is her dress. While traditional princess dresses continue to reign, younger brides are experimenting with edgier looks like jumpsuits, pantsuits, and big poet sleeves. “In our area, lace is still king,” said Vito Joseph, owner of Jillian’s Bridal Outlet in Hickory. “And brides do like the long sleeves. Still, Bohemian styles have gained popularity, and brides have ditched the old-fashioned crinoline.” Instead of that stiffness, Tiffany has seen brides choose comfort and style with removable trains and skirts that transform their wedding dresses into evening wear. If you’re not sure you can pull off one of these fashion-forward looks, book an appointment with a boutique to try on dresses. Take just a few of your friends, not an entourage. Making final selections will be easier with a smaller crew in tow. 34

The Social Event of the Year These days, almost no one marries without documenting the occasion on social media. While you’re making out your guest list and filling out invitations, create a clever hashtag friends and family members can use on social media to help you celebrate your big day. You can be funny, cute, irreverent. If you get stumped or don’t know where to start, find an online hashtag generator to help you develop the perfect name.

Anything Tastes Better with Bacon Full, sit-down evening meals are still popular. But more couples are opting for morning weddings and brunchthemed receptions. “Cupcakes instead of wedding cakes are becoming more common,” Tiffany said. “Dispensing with the traditional formalities can create a more relaxed event for everyone.”

Unique and Different Ring True Antique-looking, rare, and heirloom. These are key trends for engagement and wedding rings. EmilyAnn Graudin, sales and marketing manager at Oz’s Jewelers in Hickory, describes it as “modernized vintage.” It’s jewelry that harkens back to the past, with a modern twist. “Brides grow up see-

ing women in their families wearing the classics—yellow gold and intricate designs, and they want it to be their own,” EmilyAnn said. “A lot of vintage styles are coming back now.” However, many brides now opt for bands that don’t match their engagement ring. “The real trend right now is adding uniqueness in the wedding band,” EmilyAnn continued.

Have It Your Way Another untraditional choice making its way to the wedding aisle is eliminating some customs, like the garter and bouquet toss. “I signed up a new bride yesterday, and she doesn’t want to do them,” Tiffany said. “She’s the seventh one within the past few months.”

It’s Your Day. Enjoy It! Skipping tradition may not be for all brides, and if it’s not for you, that’s OK. As you plan your ceremony, relax and let it all soak in, experts advise. Be happy. Be calm. And don’t stress over small details that, in the end, matter little. Tiffany’s best advice? “This is your day, the day you’ve dreamt of since you were a child. Enjoy this time and don’t let it pass you by.”

Choose Bridesmaid Gifts With Your Heart And Soul Three Big Questions, Answered By Shirley Moore

Selecting gifts for your bridesmaids is one of the more meaningful choices you’ll make for your wedding. The gift will be your closest friends’ forever reminder of your big day and their part in it. It’s your personal thank you and appreciation for their time, effort, and what they spent on your wedding. Their dresses, the travel, the time for fittings and rehearsals—it all adds up. Choose carefully, practically, and wisely.

Here are answers to three popular questions:

1

How much should I spend? Spend what you can, depending on your budget. A good rule of thumb for cost is $75 to $150 for each gift. “It really depends on the bride’s budget,” said Tiffany Roper, who owns Hickory Wedding Planner. “I personally think, at a minimum, it should be $50.” Whatever

36

HICKORY LIVING • APRIL 2020

the gift, it should be meaningful and fitting for your bridesmaids.

2

Do I have to get all bridesmaids the same gift? Gifts aren’t one-size-fitsall. No rule says you must get everyone the same thing. It’s OK to honor your maid-of-honor with something special that she wouldn’t buy for herself.

3

What should I get? These days, you can opt for practical and meaningful gifts. Tiffany suggests items that might be used in the group photos. “Obviously, wine glasses are adorable,” she said. “Robes or shirts are really cute for all the girls to wear while getting ready.”

Here are some other ideas: • Makeup palettes – Who doesn’t like to play with new shades? • Jewelry – Personalized necklaces are excellent choices.

©iStockphoto.com | Oleksandr Hrytsiv

• Personalized totes and clutches – Stylish, practical, and useful – these are a favorite for many brides. “Bags are super-cute. They can use their new tote to manage all their stuff throughout the day,” Tiffany said. • Wraps or shawls – With the right color and fabric, these can fill double duty—worn with their dresses during the ceremony and after the wedding on cool, crisp evenings. • Experiences – Spa days and swanky dinners are great ways to give your bridesmaids a night to remember. • Sustainable gifts – In this age of environmental consciousness, some brides place heavy importance on sustainability. By giving small plants to your bridesmaids, you can send an eco-message and help them beautify their homes.

That leads to an important factor you should consider when selecting bridal party gifts: travel. Live plants, wine bottles, heavy, or crushable items may not be a good idea for plane travelers. Also, carefully consider when to give your gifts. If you’re giving an expensive necklace to be worn during the ceremony, consider presenting it right before the ceremony. This cuts down chances someone will misplace it or forget to put it on.

Prenuptials – Insurance for Marriage By Blair E. Cody, III It’s that time of year! Yes, wedding season is just around the corner. Few things are more beautiful and fulfilling than a Southern wedding on a clear Saturday afternoon at one of the many great venues in and around our area. While weddings are a time to celebrate with family, profess our love to our life partner, and share our happiness with those we care about, the time before the wedding can be a time to plan. Chapter 52B of the NC Statutes is titled the “Uniform Premarital Agreement Act” and it speaks to the law and prenuptial agreements in North Carolina. There are many things that are required to have a valid prenup, here is a list of five: 01

02 be between 03 04 It must prospective spouses. While this may seem obvious, a prenup isn’t necessary if the marriage doesn’t take place. Furthermore, the 06 07 08 prenup only becomes effective upon the marriage of the parties. 03 04 It must You 10 be in writing. 11 12 cannot have an enforceable prenup in NC if the agreement between you and your spouse is an oral agreement. 07 08 04 be signed by both parties. It must

I would highly recommend that each person’ 11s signature 12 to the agreement be notarized. 08 It must be voluntarily executed by each party, and not be unconscionable when 12it was executed. While use of legal words like “unconscionable” may be difficult for most to decipher, an experienced family you of all 02law attorney 03 can inform 04 the circumstances that would fall under that broad definition. After06the marriage 07 a prenup 08 can only be amended or revoked by a written agreement, signed by the parties. So, in other words, after being married for a 10 11 12 number of years the parties may decide that the circumstances that were present when they got married have now changed and the reasons they needed a prenup are no longer present, in that event they can revoke the prenup.

HICKORY LIVING • APRIL 2020

Even though I’ve been practicing family law for more than 19 years in the Hickory area, I am surprised by how little interaction I have with folks about prenuptial agreements (prenups). While the discussion of a prenup may cause some to think that you are thinking the marriage will fail, I encourage people to look at it from a different angle—Marriage Insurance. If you think about it, you insure the most valuable and prized possessions that you have: your home, car and even your life. So why not insure your marriage?

While these are some of the legal necessities for having a valid prenup, there are many other practical and necessary items that are suggested in having the best prenup possible. Remember, a prenup is in essence a contract, and like any contract, it can be challenged or disputed at a later date by one of the parties. I would not advise anyone to draft their own prenup (even if they are a lawyer themselves). Hiring an attorney who is experienced in the law regarding prenups will give you the best opportunity for having a successful prenuptial agreement. Prenups can be extremely flexible. For example, you may decide that you only want the terms of your prenup to apply in the event of a divorce and not necessarily upon the death of you or your spouse. You may elect to have a prenup that covers multiple areas such as alimony, real estate, retirement accounts, etc., or you may elect to just address one particular item in your prenup. Prenups are, without question, the single most effective way to preserve your assets during a divorce or upon your death. While the possibility of a divorce is certainly not something you should dwell on when you are considering marriage, it is important to remember that about 50% of all marriages end in divorce. If the parties don’t get divorced, then there is a 100% certainty that the marriage will end with the death of one of the parties. Parties may choose to have

the terms of their prenup apply differently depending on whether the marriage ends upon divorce or death of one of the parties. While some may want their spouse to inherit all of their assets upon death, there are certainly many situations where one would not want that to be the case. The most common example involves a second marriage for the parties where each has children from their prior relationship. A properly drafted prenup can protect certain assets in the event of death and preserve those assets for that spouse’s children. Again, in situations like these, an attorney who is versed in prenuptial agreements can help you identify certain assets and advise you on how best to preserve those assets for your children. In closing, prenups set the parties’ expectations on what will happen when the marriage ends. If you would like to learn more about prenuptial agreements, give me a call and schedule an appointment to have an in-depth conversation as to what type of prenup is best for you. Blair E.
