Our area has two of the signature events in this part of the state in the fall, as we celebrate OktoberFest in Hickory and BalloonFest in Statesville. These events offer the opportunity to get out and mingle with the crowd and enjoy live music, food and drink, crafts, and much more!

Tell your friends and neighbors and make plans now to attend both events in the month of October!

October is also Breast Cancer Awareness month. Much progress has been made in the fight against this dreaded disease, but there is more work to be done. Early detection is key to a positive outcome. Women can reduce their risk of breast cancer by limiting alcohol intake, not smoking, controlling their weight, and staying physically active.

Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer in women behind skin cancer.

Ah, the weather has cooled off and fall has arrived in full color. Pumpkins, mums, and scarecrows decorate entrances to homes, and splashes of yellow, orange, and red naturally enhance the landscape. People are wearing pink to show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and creative costumes are being designed and bought for Halloween. According to The Knot, October has become one of the most popular months for weddings, tied with September and surpassing June.

Outdoor fall weddings are popular as the trend takes advantage of the cooler weather and beautiful scenery.

The fall festival scene continues into October. In Hickory, Oktoberfest is the main event held October 13–15 downtown. The festival features hundreds of food and commercial vendors, amusement rides, carnival rides, two beer gardens, and three stages filled with entertainment. Oktoberfest opens on 8

Carolina BalloonFest is the attraction to attend in Statesville held October 20–22 at the Statesville Regional Airport Weather permitting, morning balloon competitions and afternoon mass ascensions will astound the crowds. In addition, fun can be had by all with live entertainment, North Carolina wine and craft beer, festival food and a kid’s zone.

A trip to the mountains for some gorgeous scenery, a hike in the woods, an outing on the lake, or a visit to one of the many wineries in our area offer opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Don’t forget a visit to a pumpkin patch for that perfect jack-o-lantern, a stroll through a corn maze, or a hay ride just for fun.

As the month winds down and children ascend upon our neighborhoods dressed in their costumes, let’s work together to keep them safe. Turn on your porch light, clear out debris, and light the pathway to your door. Consider using LED or battery-operated candles instead of real candles in your pumpkins. Watch for children while you are driving, especially if there are cars parked on the side of the road. Trick-or-treaters are excited and having fun. They may not be paying attention and attempt to cross the road between cars. Adding reflective tape to your child’s costume will help drivers see them better. If you have older children who are going out with friends unsupervised, have a plan to know where they will go and who they will be with, and ask them to check in periodically. Finally, and this is the hardest one for me, try not to eat all the candy you bought for the kids! Although, a few pieces won’t hurt you.

For 105 years, Peoples Bank has faithfully served the Catawba County area.

This year, they took their commitment to customer service and community to a new level with a brand refresh. The new tagline, Be Exceptional, was added in March, along with updates to their digital platforms.

CEO Lance Sellers started his career in banking in 1984. He joined Peoples Bank in 1998 as the chief credit officer.

Growing up in Gaston County, this area is home for Lance and his family. “Being able to work with small, family-owned, local companies and to see them grow and succeed is what makes my job enjoyable,” Lance said. “You see how much you impact your community when you see the new jobs being created and the way that positively affects the community.”

Lance sees a special niche for the community bank.

“We are a 105-year-old institution that’s always focused on providing exceptional customer service while selling to our customers, not what makes us the most money, but what customers need,” Lance said. “We have always done this, but we haven’t done a very good job of telling our story. Especially as we grew and expanded, we needed a brand refresh to better communicate our focus.”

While a lot of larger banks are closing branches, Peoples Bank is proud to be maintaining and growing.

“A lot of banks are closing branches because so much is moving online,” Lance

said. “But for a community bank in rural small town communities, we need to have a branch presence to take care of the customers.”

Peoples Bank takes pride in providing jobs in their communities, 330 jobs in the area.

“We take great pride in our employees and what they do to give back to our communities, both in time and money,” Lance said.

Peoples Bank is the last bank headquartered in Catawba County.

Grilled Southwestern Steak and Colorful Vegetables

Shedding excess pounds doesn’t have to mean depriving yourself of your favorite foods, including red meat. A study from the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center shows that healthy, higher-protein diets, including lean beef, can be beneficial to not only weight loss, but also maintaining muscle mass and heart health.

beef top round steak, cut 1-inch thick (about 1 1/2 pounds) Salt, to taste

Marinade: 1/4 1/4 1 1 1 1/2

cup fresh lime juice cup prepared mild salsa tablespoon chopped garlic tablespoon olive oil teaspoon ground cumin teaspoon coarse ground black pepper

Colorful Vegetables: 2 1

tablespoons olive oil medium green or red bell pepper, cut into 1/4-inch strips ounces button mushrooms, sliced 1/4-inch thick cups zucchini, sliced 1/4inch thick

3/4 teaspoon ground cumin 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper 1 cup finely chopped tomatoes 1/4 cup chopped green onions

Directions

In small bowl, combine marinade ingredients. Place beef steak and marinade in food-safe plastic bag; turn steak to coat. Close bag securely and marinate in refrigerator 6 hours, or as long as overnight, turning occasionally.

Remove steak from marinade; discard marinade. Place steak on grill over medium, ash-covered coals. For medium-rare

doneness (145° F), grill covered, turning once, 12-14 minutes (on gas grill over medium heat, 16-19 minutes).

To Prepare Colorful Vegetables: In large, nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, heat olive oil.

Add bell pepper strips; cook and stir 1-2 minutes, or until crisp-tender. Add mushrooms, zucchini, cumin, salt and black pepper; cook and stir 3-4 minutes, or until crisp-tender. Add tomatoes and green onions; cook and stir 1 minute.

Carve steak into thin slices; season with salt, to taste. Serve with colorful vegetables.

A Fun, Family Day

Are you bored with the same mundane weekend routine? Would you like to try something new this fall or have a bit of adventure with your family this month?

I have a few recommendations for an impromptu trip.

Jetton Park is a great place to spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. The park is in the North Park region of Cornelius and spans 104 acres. Jetton Park has a great beach area, picnic shelters, playground, and tennis courts, along with a 1.3-mile bike trail, a 1.5-mile walking and roller blade trail, and a formal garden. If you are feeling hungry before or after visiting the park, a great place to stop is Birkdale Village.

Families can dine on the patio at Brixx Pizza or EEZ Sushi and then grab dessert at Ben & Jerry’s or TCBY. Lake Lure is my all-time favorite choice for a day trip. The lake is 720 acres with about 21 miles of shoreline.

Lake Lure is a man-made lake surrounded by breathtaking views of the mountains, located east of Asheville.

The mountain town has so much to

offer, including hiking, fly fishing, rock climbing, skiing, shopping, swimming, and boating. One of my favorite things to do while visiting Lake Lure is eat.

There is dining for every occasion, from a candlelit dinner by the lake to a casual dinner at a pub or grille…they have it. At Larkin’s on the Lake, you can park your car or dock your boat and grab the best hamburger. Larkin’s also serves steaks, ribs, and seafood.

Get served on a deck overlooking the lake for a casual dinner or dine inside for a more elegant dinner with white linens. Another great option for food is La Strada at Lake Lure. This is a great spot! Enjoy a meal on the patio while watching children frolic on the beach.

Families can visit the beach for a day of swimming for a minimal fee, or a pontoon boat tour to take in the sights and sounds of the beautiful lake. Families can also hike up to the top of Chimney Rock with its stunning waterfalls and breathtaking views.

Blowing Rock, NC is a short drive up the mountain with breathtaking views along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Blow-

ing Rock’s unique downtown is filled with one of a kind shops and boutiques for hunting antiques, mod décor, and unique gifts. Aqua B has a new shop located at 110 Sunset Drive in Blowing Rock. Children can run, laugh, and play at Memorial Park on Main Street downtown, and adults can play basketball, tennis, or just relax in a rocking chair. Don’t pass up the delicious ice cream or fudge at Kilwin’s Chocolates.

And, stop at CAMP Coffee and enjoy a dark, rich cup of coffee before heading down the mountain. There’s lots to do in Blowing Rock. Along with the downtown area you’ll find more shopping at Tanger Outlets. Bring your dogs—this is a very pet friendly place and you’ll meet friendly dogs everywhere.

Plan some travel this October. Get out of your comfort zone, roll off your couch and step away from the television. Put your phone and electronics down so you can spend quality time with the people you love. Head to one of the spots I have suggested or choose one of your own to make memories that will last a lifetime!

sues that have reached a point where they no longer feel controllable or are simply making you feel uncomfortable. By tackling these things head on, you’ll build your confidence and rid your life of the negativity. Remember, there’s no one lording over you, forcing you to live your life a certain way. If things aren’t working, you can change them, or at least change your attitude toward the issue.

Set Small Goals I think this applies most to work, debt, and exercise. When a task seems insurmountable, like losing 40 pounds or finishing a big project, the first step taken is often the hardest. By setting small goals, like waking up an hour earlier to go on a walk every day, your big obstacle will be broken down into attainable portions. By tackling each goal, your confidence will mount enough so you can conquer your overall goal.

A friend recently confided in me that she felt “stuck.” I think we’ve all felt that way at one point or another. I’m in my midtwenties, and sometimes it feels as if my career/relationship/ life in general hasn’t reached the point where it should be. It’s easy to lose your identity sometimes when you’re a full-time employee, a parent, or just a person transitioning through life’s many changes. It’s important, in these moments, to recognize the issue, and to course-correct as soon as you can.

Even though we all feel at some point that we’re not where we should be, sometimes we’re just too hard on ourselves. While having high standards for yourself is important, don’t beat yourself up about not meeting those goals every time. Sometimes, you need to take a step back and reevaluate to regain your confidence.

Positive Affirmation Sometimes, it feels like the world is beating you down. For women in particular, you’re often surrounded by unrealistic images of what your body and life are supposed to look like.

It’s easy to get down on yourself from time to time. It may seem fake or cheesy, but giving yourself compliments really does help. I try to be mindful of when I’m having negative thoughts about myself so that I can replace them with positive ones. For instance, I’m the only person in my position at work without an MBA. I could let that hold me back, and sometimes I admittedly feel a little inferior because of it. Instead, I remind myself of the initiatives that I’ve accomplished to build back my self-esteem.

Take Time for Yourself Taking time for yourself is often overlooked, especially if you’re a parent, but it’s so important to do. If you don’t love yourself, who will? Take an afternoon to go to the movies, or relax in a peaceful bath. Whatever you do, make sure it feels like you’re treating yourself. No matter how great your friends, family, or spouse are, make sure that you are your own advocate and best Identify the Issue friend.
