Show those legs WithConfidence Do you limit your wardrobe to garments that cover bulging and discolored veins? Do you suffer from leg swelling, itching, heaviness, leg pain or leg sores?

Dr. Thompson with The Center for Advanced Vein Care can erase those blemished and bulging veins permanently! If left untreated, Varicose Veins can progress to a more serious venous disease. Modern treatment of varicose veins includes endovenous thermal ablation. This technique involves placing a small catheter directly into the vein, followed by laser or radio frequency energy to the vein. In addition, injection therapy, ultrasound guided injection therapy, or ambulatory phlebectomy (removal of veins using micro hooks) may be required.

Welcome to the May issue. You will find plenty of things to do outdoors in May, which is our theme this month…Outdoor Living. Whether you like staying at home and creating an oasis in your own backyard, hitting the lake, or traveling to a favorite destination–May is your month! Our area is in full spring mode. Enjoy fresh produce, baked goods, and local crafts from all the farmers’ markets in our area. If you appreciate good music, you will surely find a free community concert close by that fits your musical taste! These activities will get you outside enjoying the sunshine and the community where you live. On Sunday the 12th, we celebrate Mother’s Day. Let these strong women know how much you appreciate all they have done and still do for you. Monday, May 27th we honor the Americans who died while serving in the military with Memorial Day. Fly your flags at half-staff until noon and let the veterans in your life know that you appreciate their service. Until next month, thank you for reading the May issue of Hickory Living Magazine.

May By Kathy Wheeler

Robin Williams once said, “Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party.’” You will find plenty of reasons to party and get outdoors this month! On Sunday, May 12th we celebrate Mother’s Day and have a special opportunity to show our appreciation for the many things these lovely ladies have done for us. They have given us the benefit of the doubt when our actions didn’t warrant it. Tolerated our shenanigans, while believing in our potential, swearing we were the cause of their gray hair. They are our strongest advocate and biggest fan, wanting only the best for us. This Mother’s Day pull out all the stops! Most moms would willingly prepare a meal to give her children an excuse to visit, but don’t make her cook! Instead, bring her flowers, take her out to lunch or dinner, and most of all, let her know how much her love, sacrifice, and encouragement have meant to you. Outdoor Living is a very fitting theme for this issue. We live in such a beauti8

ful state, and North Carolina is at its finest this time of year. We are perfectly situated between the mountains and the beach with access to lakes in every community. The weather is ideal for camping, hiking, biking, boating, scenic motorcycle rides, and enjoying get-togethers with friends for a cookout or pool party. You will find articles in this issue of places to go, things to do, and how to enhance your own backyard for enjoying those evenings at home. If you enjoy live music, you will love May! Many communities offer free outdoor concerts this month. The Morganton TGIF Concerts start up May 3rd with a free performance each Friday through July on the historic Burke County courthouse lawn. The 2019 Family Friday Night Summer Concert Series in Valdese starts May 24th through the first weekend in September. Bands start at 7 p.m. for both communities. Music on the Lawn at The Inn at Ragged Gardens in Blowing Rock begins this month with a different band each Friday, 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., and the Hickory Jaycees

will have their first Conover Alive on Saturday May 18th featuring On the Border and Coconut Groove Band at 7 p.m. The concert will be held at Norman B. Coley Amphitheater on 403 Conover Station SE. Bring a lounge chair and enjoy the fun! Hickory will host Downtown Art Crawl May 15 starting at 5 p.m., and the Farmer’s Market is open under the sails on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Take a trip downtown to support local businesses, artists, and farmers. On May 27th, we will celebrate Memorial Day, a time set aside to honor all Americans who died while serving in the armed forces. Participate in the National Moment of Remembrance by taking a silent moment at 3 p.m. to reflect on those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. At Hickory Living Magazine, we hope that you find an excuse this month to have a party and enjoy everything there is to enjoy in May!

“Home is where the heart is…we’ve heard that before…and it’s true! Every day, exciting dreams of new homes and businesses are fulfilled at Moss-Marlow Building Company. Since 1909—the company is celebrating 110 years—creative minds at MossMarlow have worked with families and businesses to design and construct extraordinary homes and commercial spaces that will bring years of pleasure for generations to come. The people who are Moss-Marlow also build relationships, and that, as they say, is what matters most. Todd Rhodes is president of Moss-Marlow. “We’re stewards of this business,” Todd told me as he showed me around the design center. “The work ethic and legacy originally established by Luther Moss and carried on by his grandson, Donald Moss, and cousin, Bob Laffon, remain in place today. Our work reflects how we live—with a sense of service and integrity. Every project is built to the highest quality standards, and decisions are based in our belief that we should do the right thing.” Todd works with a smile on his face and dedication to excellence. “I aspire to be a servant leader. I’m here to help our team create our clients’ desires in the best possible way—cost efficient, value-based, and done right every time.” HIGHEST QUALITY STANDARDS What should you expect when you choose Moss-Marlow Building Company as a partner in your construction project? Whether it’s a stunning custom home on the lake, the mountains, or in town, a complex multi-million dollar business, commercial development, a school, a church, or a small renovation job, you can expect quality, attention to detail, and a team who listen to what you want and need. “We understand it can be costly for us to make things right, like when we knew we had to tear out and replace a driveway that had frozen after a sub-contractor poured it, but that was the right thing to do,” Todd said. “That client has been a loyal customer ever since…our relationship with him is priceless.” DOING IT RIGHT Communication, accountability, meeting expectations, and capacity to adjust to stay on track are necessary to get any complex job done right. “Many companies miss the boat in working efficiently with their clients because they don’t manage the details well,” VP Jeff Knox explained. “The most effective tool we use is an easy, online construction project management software that takes the guesswork out of the equation—for our team and for clients. From the very start of a project, even before the design phase, through estimating, selection of all the components that will go into the home or business, to contracts, timelines, through change orders and the final walk-through, this easy communica-

tion link gives the homeowner a critical role in controlling the job.” Many of Moss-Marlow’s clients live out of town or out of state—think Arizona, New York, Florida, even out of the country. Being able to read a daily work log, signed off by their supervisor, along with photos, videos, and notes of progress on the site, bring the project to life for the family looking forward to moving in. “We even log the weather when it has affected our timeline,” field project manager Randy Hart explained. “Using this software enables us to answer questions as they come up and agree about any changes or discrepancies. It’s a gamechanger.” THE FINEST CRAFTSMEN Finding the best craftsmen and subcontractors is critical. Think about the interiors of a custom designed home or spacious sanctuary…the beauty is in the details. “The benefits of working with experienced, top-quality woodworkers and finish carpenters can’t be overstated,” Todd said. “Our employees, subcontractors, and vendors are long-standing partners, many for decades. We make sure our hires and partners fit our culture— they’re good people. It’s a reflection of our company’s sense of pride in our work and treating people like family that keep good people on our team. Our workers like to sit back and see what they’ve built. I like to see that, too.” Sometimes, clients will come with their own plans, but people often sit down for a consultation with just an idea or pictures from a magazine, nothing on paper. “With about 90% of the custom homes we build, we partner with designers and architects,” Jeff continued. “We can build any style home, from very contemporary to craftsmen or farmhouse style, probably the most popular these days.” Moss-Marlow has built lake homes throughout our area, vacation homes in the mountains, and in some of the nicest communities, like The Coves Mountain River Club in Lenoir, where they are a preferred builder, as well as on private properties—they are licensed in North and South Carolina. There are currently about two dozen homes under construction.

Todd partners with Jeff Knox across many operations of the business and is also involved in commercial construction projects. “Typically, we work with architects to design plans for offices, medical buildings, retail space, banks, airport facilities, schools, and churches that will work best for their use,” he said. “Our customers can call on us with any need—a repair on the weekend, to discuss expansions or renovations, and we’re there for them. Again, it’s about building strong, honest relationships…it’s what we’re all about.”

A STRONG MINISTRY‚ A GIVING HEART “It’s an important part of our faith to give back to the community and to support our employees in their personal mission,” Todd shared. “We love working with congregations in designing a faith building to suit their diverse needs to serve generations to come. We talk with the congregation about their dreams, their building’s purpose and design, their budget, and finding solutions. We can remodel, renovate, build additions and new buildings, or start from scratch.” Office manager, Carol Fox, told me about her church, Bethlehem Baptist, that is nearing completion. “It’s an exciting project for all of us,” she shared. Dwayne Simmons, building chairman, told me, “The MossMarlow team has guided us through rebuilding our church after it burned down. There’s no manual to do that, and everyone has been extraordinary to work with. It is very refreshing and a pleasure to do business with a Christian-based company in this day and age.” The company has a ministry team that sets aside money each month so employees can support projects they want to help, and it has become involved in mission projects that customers are passionate about. “Some of our most important decisions are about family and community,” Todd said. “Being true to our faith is important to everyone here. This business has blessed us greatly, and it’s a responsibility and our desire to give back to a community that has been so good to us.” If you have a thought in your mind about building a home, a commercial or faith-based building, Todd and his team are ready to hear about your dreams. Give Moss-Marlow a call… you will be well served. “We work with companies that have a passion for developing strong leadership, operational excellence, and community impact. Moss Marlow’s commitment to each of these areas exemplifies their core values and is what establishes them as not just a trusted and valued construction company, but also a great investor in the communities they serve. Great communities are built on companies like Moss Marlow.” Bruce Schronce, President & Founder of StrongLead, LLC. www.mossmarlow.com For residential projects contact Jeff Knox 828-312-8268 For commercial contact Steve Hymel 828-312-9648 or Tracey Setzer 828-310-8467 Todd Rhodes 828-328-2333 ext. 335

Summer’s coming! Want to lose a few pounds? Physician’s Plan Weight Loss + Wellness can help you look and feel your very best. Their experts provide an individualized weight loss goal based on your unique medical profile. Shaffney Beaver, clinical director, is a certified nutrition and wellness consultant. “We meet you where you are and help boost your confidence,” Shaffney said. The Hickory 18

team is comprised of physicians, PAs, nurse practitioners, and weight loss counselors. Physician’s Plan recently welcomed Hickory native Jennifer Berube, MSN, NP-C, to the group. She has over 11 years of experience providing aesthetics treatments and helping patients reach their weight loss goals. Physician’s Plan offers a full line up of aesthetic and med spa services. Kelly Mercer, medical esthetician, provides free consultations to patients for an in-depth skin analysis. Kelly recommends a HydraFacial to many patients. “It’s incredible for many rea-

sons,” Kelly said. “It’s suitable for all skin types, and I can customize the settings to meet each patient’s needs.” The HydraFacial combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration, and antioxidant protection simultaneously, resulting in clearer, more beautiful skin. It can help with acne, improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, congested and enlarged pores, oily skin, hyperpigmentation, and brown spots. “It is the best facial for the extraction of blackheads.” It is recommended to have a HydraFacial every four weeks in addition to a consistent skincare regimen. “I like to compare it to losing weight,” Kelly said. “I am like a personal trainer for your skin and an at-home skincare regimen is your diet. In order to see the overall results you want, you must invest time and money.” In addition to Obagi and SkinMedica, Physician’s Plan recently added a new medical grade skincare line, Colorescience. “This skincare line focuses on

color correction and protection,” Kelly said. “They also have an award-winning line of UV protecting sunscreen.” Anyone can come in to purchase Colorescience products at Physician’s Plan—you don’t have to be a current patient to purchase it for retail. “Microneedling is the act of puncturing the skin with small needles in order to create micro-trauma in the skin,” Kelly said continued. “As the skin heals itself, collagen is produced. Collagen is the protein that provides elasticity. After the age of 20, one will lose 1% of collagen each year. In addition to stimulating collagen, microneedling aids in smoothing fine lines, minimizes the appearance of scars and pores, and improves the skin’s overall texture.” Photos: Top, Kelly performing microneedling Kelly also noted medical microneeusing SkinStylus Pen • Bottom, Kelly demonstrating dling is much more effective than at-home microneedling. Whether it’s weight loss or med spa services, the expert staff at Physician’s Plan can develop a customized plan for you based on their recommendations and your goals. “We get to know our patients,” Shaffney said. “When you walk into our office, you are not just a number. We offer an assortment of quality services at a great cost. Living Outdoor

Hardscape to Paradise By Kathy Wheeler | Photos courtesy of Scenic View Landscapes On all the design shows we hear a lot about bringing the outdoors in. However, when the days get longer and the weather warmer, we spend more and more of our time outside. In essence, that design concept reverses itself into bringing the indoors outside, and our outdoor living spaces become as important as our home interiors. Landscape design has become much more than a lush green lawn with shrubbery and trees. Intricate stone work on patios, walkways and retaining walls, beautiful, multi-level wooden decks, and other permanent hardscapes help define the spaces. Hardscapes have grown into a very popular trend. 24

Left– beautifully landscaped Left–A courtyard with a fountain is surrounded by stonework walkways, lighted stone, columns and an iron fence. Below–Stone firepits and benches create a more relaxed atmosphere. Multi-level entertaining spaces are created with decks and raised patios. Pergolas further define the living areas. Water features create a Zen feel to any outdoor space.

With outdoor kitchens and dining areas, we cook, eat, and entertain in our backyards. We relax with the sounds of water features. We shield ourselves from the sun with screenedin porches, gazebos, pergolas, and awnings, and we cool off by taking a dip in swimming pools. On cool evenings, we gather around fireplaces or fire pits to have a glass of wine and hang out with friends. In our area, we are lucky enough to experience four distinct seasons, and many of these outdoor features can help us enjoy and weather the elements of each season – picture relaxing in a hot tub, strategically placed beside a woodburning fireplace, while watching it snow. Amazing! These hardscape projects can be very expensive depending on what you include, and while a smaller renovation could be fine for a do-ityourself project, most are not. All that stonework and deck foundations can 26

be back-breaking work if you tried to tackle it yourself. A professional landscape designer can help you create your space, possibly save you on material costs, and provide crews to get the job done more efficiently. After all, you want to spend your summer enjoying the outdoors instead of slaving over it. If your renovation is extensive, a landscape designer can help you accomplish it in stages, allowing you to budget for each stage. Perhaps start with a patio, and then add a fireplace or water feature later. Knowing what the overall plan is before you start can save you time and money by prepping for the features that will be added at a later time. We reached out to landscape designer Kevin Sipe, owner of Scenic View Landscapes who provided beautiful photos of his incredible work! While you browse these photos, make a list of features you would like to include in your backyard paradise!

Hiking in the Blue Ridge By Kathy Wheeler | Photography courtesy of Jeff Barrier

I’m one of the most non-athletic people I know, so I wasn’t sure I was the right person to write an article on hiking. I’ve only been on a few of those excursions. You can’t live so close to the mountains and not venture out once in a while. The last hike I made was into Linville Gorge with my brother-inlaw, which ended with him laughing, because I wanted to be airlifted out. For a week, I took ibuprofen and had muscles that felt like noodles. Even though I am far from being qualified on the topic, it is good to have friends with diverse interests! Jeff Barrier is a photographer and one of the most avid hikers I know. When I asked for his help writing this article, guess where he was? Hiking! I knew he and his wife, Angie, would be more than qualified to educate me and our readers on trails, levels of difficulty, and equipment for ascending to breathtaking views in the Blue Ridge Mountains. While I’m happy to stay at home and admire Jeff’s photos on Facebook, I’ve heard there is nothing like seeing the scenery first-hand, and Jeff was just the person to interview!

Why do you personally like to hike? While hiking is a great way to get some exercise, the exposure to the natural world is the most important aspect for me. Being in nature gives me a mental reset, a break from our modern, technology-intense world that I find to be incredibly beneficial. When you find a place where – in every direction – you see, hear, and smell nothing but

nature, it is the most relaxing thing I can imagine and something I need. What are some of the safety rules to know before starting a hike? Partner or group hiking is the safest approach, and inexperienced hikers should never solo hike. Inexperienced hikers should also team up with a more experienced hiker who is familiar with the area, especially if the hike is above beginner level. Hikers of all levels should practice basic hiking safety, which includes always let someone know where you are going and when you plan to be back (a general itinerary of your hike). Take enough water, which is easy to underestimate. A minimum of a liter of water per person for every two hours of hiking is a good rule of thumb. Take emergency items like a whistle to be use in the event you get lost or injured, items to start a fire, enough clothes to stay warm through the night, and a pocket knife or multi-tool. Cell service can be anywhere from spotty to non-existent on the trail but taking a phone is a good idea in case you need to make that emergency call. Smart phones are also useful for using apps that display trail maps and your location on the trail. What equipment is needed for most hikes? One of the great things about getting into hiking is that it really does not require a lot of specialized equipment. I have ankle issues, so a good pair of mid-ankle hiking boots are important for me. They provide good protection from ankle rolls for anyone walking over the rocky and uneven terrain that hiking always pres-

hikes that require long, steep ascents or descents over rough terrain that are many miles in length. Level of skill takes into consideration things like your navigational skillset and the possibility that use of those navigational skills might be required as well as outdoor survival skills. A short hike on a park maintained trail would be on the low end of difficulty. A hike deep into a wilderness area on a very steep and less maintained trail would be at the higher end of difficulty.

ents; though many people are perfectly comfortable hiking in trail runners or even hiking sandals. Carry a daypack loaded with your emergency equipment and enough food and water to get you through the hike. I take lots of photos so either a small digital camera or a phone with a descent camera is a must for me. A trekking pole is a nice to have item but certainly not a necessity. 30

HICKORY LIVING • MAY 2019

Can you explain a little about the difficulty levels of trails? I see difficulty levels from two different perspectives: how physically challenging is the hike and what is the level of hiking/outdoor skill required on a given hike? How physically challenging a hike is, of course, is relative to your personal fitness level. In general, challenges range from a relatively flat, groomed trail to

What are some of the trails you have hiked with the best views? We are fortunate to have access to thousands of trails in our area that offer the full spectrum of difficulty levels and stunning views. Beginner level hikes would include High Shoals Falls in South Mountain State Park and Linville Falls from the Linville Falls Visitor Center, off the Blue Ridge Parkway. A couple of our intermediate hikes would include Crabtree Falls, also off the Blue Ridge Parkway or Shortoff Mountain near Morganton, North Carolina. Do you ever camp on the trails that you hike? If so, what gear do you take with you? I often camp on the trails I hike. Any time that I am going to backpack/camp, the basic list of things I take is pretty much the same though it varies a little season to season. I take a tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, backpacking stove, water filtration system, something to hold water (dromedary bag), season appropriate clothing, and enough food for the duration of the trip. The season to season variable boils down to adjusting the layers of clothing needed for warmth. To hike any of the trails mentioned or pictured in this article, Jeff says that a quick Google search will provide you with maps and information you will need to get started. I hope you take some time this season to enjoy the beautiful scenery that our area offers us. Happy hiking!

Setting Up Camp

Springtime Camping: The Best Our Area Has to Offer By Aaron Garcia

T

here are few natural joys better than springtime in our corner of the Carolinas. Famously blue skies. Crisp evenings. Sun without sweat. This year, you can either enjoy the season through your windows, or you can experience it the way nature intended—by camping. For those willing to choose the latter, you’ll learn there are plenty of opportunities in our area to give it a try.

Not-so Roughing It The easiest way you’ll find a spot to set up camp is to look for private campsites. Unless otherwise noted, they tend to cater to a mix of tent and RV campers, setting aside blocks of spaces for those who are roughing it. While this isn’t as rustic as setting out into the woods, it can be a fantastic starting point for the uninitiated since private sites typically offer more modern amenities and attractions; many will provide power, water, and bathrooms, as well as Wi-Fi, miniature golf, and game rooms.

For example, national franchise KOA’s Statesville location offers a swimming pool, game room, on-site store, basketball court, horseshoe pit, and Wi-Fi. Other campgrounds offer more unique amenities and attractions. Linney’s Mill in Union Grove attracts its campers thanks to creek-side sites and its still-operational water-powered corn meal mill, which has been churning since 1937. Trail Busters Campground in Statesville typically attracts horse riders and enthusiasts. Whether you’re just looking to sleep under the stars or you’re looking for something more specific, chances are you can find what you’re looking for in our neck of the woods.

Into the Wild For those looking for a more traditional camping experience, Lake Norman State Park in Troutman is one of the best options around. The natural park has a designated campground with 33 sites, many of them only 50 to 100 yards from Lake Norman’s shoreline. Each site has a fire ring, lantern hook, picnic table, and a HICKORY LIVING • MAY 2019

tent pad for setting up your shelter. There are also on-site showers and bathrooms to make sure roughing it doesn’t become too rough. “The park is a great option for outdoor enthusiasts wanting a full weekend adventure,” said Superintendent Greg Schneider. Visitors will find areas to swim, fish, hike, ride bikes, and rent boats, all within the park’s 1900-acre property. “You can get it all over here on Lake Norman,” said Schneider, who added that they hold educational programs and discovery hikes on the weekends. The park also has areas for groups of 10-25 and larger parties to eat and set up camp. The park advertises free Wi-Fi, but you won’t find power or television hookups. It’s the perfect excuse to let your cell phones die and reconnect with the world around you.

There’s a Camp for That If you’re looking for proof that no aspect of modern life is safe from technology’s rapid advancement, even the old-fashion art of camping has been turned into an app. And in this case, it seems like a suitable tool for those looking to pitch their tents somewhere new. Hickory resident Jacob Faltermayer owns Living the Dream Farm in Hickory, a large piece of property with a barn and horseback riding ring. Eventually, Jacob wants to turn the land into a dude ranch. As a way to give the hospitality industry a try, he’s on Hipcamp.com, a property-sharing app that lets landowners rent out campsites. Faltermayer’s listing, called Sunset Hill, typically books for $20 per night, per tent. The concept, said Faltermayer, is the same as staying at a listing on Airbnb, a room-sharing app that he prefers to use over staying at a hotel. “I’ve stayed at other sites on Hipcamp,” he said. “If I’m traveling, I’d prefer to stay at an Airbnb, because I know the care people put into the property where you’re staying.”

What S’more Could you Ask For? While Schneider said most campers come prepared, he has been asked to help when vital items have been left at home. “I’ve had people knock on my door at two in the morning asking me for marshmallows,” Schneider said with a laugh. “More than anything, it’s important to bring the right expectations. You’ll see deer wandering through your campsite and raccoons sniffing around your coolers. Just be well aware that you’re going to see wildlife.”

With so many campsites popping up across Iredell and Catawba counties these days, it’s easier to experience the great outdoors now more than ever. “You don’t need to wander too far from home,” said Faltermayer.

What's Cooking?! Spanakopita Puffs

If you want to impress your guests, try serving this puff pastry recipe as an appetizer at your next gathering. This flaky pastry filled with a delicious combination of spinach, onions and feta cheese can keep them coming back for more.

Spanakopita Puffs Recipe adapted from MilkMeansMore.org.

1 1 1 10 4 2 ½ ¼ ½ 1

package puff pastry sheets tablespoon unsalted butter small onion, diced ounces of frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained ounces of light cream cheese, softened eggs, divided teaspoon salt teaspoon black pepper cup crumbled garlic and herb feta cheese tablespoon cold water

Directions Heat oven to 375° F. Thaw folded pastries 15 minutes. Once thawed, unfold sheets to thaw out flat. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt butter. Add onions and saute 3 - 5 minutes, or until tender and translucent. Stir spinach into softened onions. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until water from spinach evaporates and spinach is mostly dry. Transfer spinach mixture to large bowl.

In small bowl, blend cream cheese with one egg, salt and pepper until smooth. Fold cream cheese mixture into spinach mixture to combine. Stir in feta cheese and set aside. Line baking pans with parchment paper or silicone baking mats. On floured surface, roll one sheet of puff pastry out to 10 by 12 inch rectangle. Cut sheet in half lengthwise, then again widthwise to form four 5 by 6 inch rectangles. Place rectangles on prepared baking sheets. Place spoonful of filling onto center of each cut pastry. Whisk remaining egg with cold water to create egg wash. Lightly brush egg wash

around perimeter edges of each pastry square. Pick up short side of pastry and fold over filling toward other short side. Press edges to seal before crimping with fork. Repeat with remaining pastries. Brush small amount egg wash over top of each pastry. Cut small slits on top of each pastry to allow filling to vent steam while cooking. Bake 25 - 30 minutes, or until pastries are evenly browned on top. Transfer pastries to wire rack. Cool 8 - 10 minutes before serving.
