Don’t Let

Varicose Veins Slow You Down!

Do you suffer from leg swelling, itching, heaviness, leg pain or leg sores? Do you only wear garments that cover bulging and discolored veins?

Dr. Thompson with The Center for Advanced Vein Care can erase those blemished and bulging veins permanently! If left untreated, Varicose Veins can progress to a more serious venous disease.

BEFORE

AFTER

Modern treatment of varicose veins includes endovenous thermal ablation. This technique involves placing a small catheter directly into the vein, followed by laser or radio frequency energy to the vein. In addition, injection therapy, ultrasound guided injection therapy, or ambulatory phlebectomy (removal of veins using micro hooks) may be required.

Procedures are performed in-office, with no downtime.

Treatments are covered by private insurance and Medicare. No Referrals Needed.

from the publisher Welcome to the March issue. I enjoy local magazines that promote local businesses. As the new publisher of Hickory Living Magazine, we will continue to feature businesses each month on our covers, while switching things up a bit in the magazine. In the last few months, we have started implementing themes, with this month’s being our home design issue. Spring begins on the 20th, and warmer weather is just around the corner, so March is a great time to start making improvements to your home. This month’s issue should prove to be a good resource for you with informative articles to help you with your home projects this spring. On March 10th don’t forget to move your clocks up an hour as we enter into daylight savings time and wear a little green on the 17th in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. As the days grow warmer, I hope you take some time to get outside and enjoy the weather and all the scenery that spring offers. Until next month, thank you for reading the March issue of Hickory Living Magazine. Enjoy!

o t n i g n i r p S Home Improvement By Kathy Wheeler

I

don’t know about you, but I am so ready for spring! The cold winter weather had me hibernating most of the season and gave me plenty of opportunity to take note of the space I live in. I had loads of time to contemplate my spring project list. As irony would have it, just when I thought my list and plans were complete, I started pulling together our home design theme for the March issue of Hickory Living. As I read through the articles and spoke with advertisers, my to-do-list kept growing! Luckily for me, I know who I can hire to get the work done. The magazine is full of design professionals this month who can knock more than a few items off my list! Spring is right around the corner and with it comes warmer days and an inspiration to do something new and fresh. While it’s still too cold to plant flowers or start outdoor projects, spring cleaning

8

HICKORY LIVING • MARCH 2019

is the most cost effective project you can tackle. Getting rid of items that you no longer use frees up much needed space for organizing the treasures you keep. Donating what you no longer need or want makes this project even sweeter. Cleaning windows, baseboards, cabinets, and scuff marks on walls can make things feel new again. After a good cleaning, the renovation projects will be obvious. Once you have purged all the items you can live without, if you are still busting at the seams with stuff you have no place to put, you may decide it’s time to move. Whether you plan to build a new custom home or find one on the market that better suits your needs, selling your home will go hand-in-hand with buying a new one. According to Zillow, homes listed in early spring typically sell the fastest, so March is the month to get on it!

Improving your curb appeal, decluttering, replacing outdated décor, and remodeling your kitchen or bathrooms may be just the thing you need to fall in love with your home all over again. Or, that effort can go a long way in helping you sell it. You will find articles and resources in this issue that can help the do-it-yourselfer make improvements, and professionals for those jobs out of your skill set. Our home is more than a place to lay our heads. It houses our memories, it’s where we entertain our friends and family, and it’s our headquarters for planning and living our lives. So, keep on reading! You’ll likely find an article or two that inspires you to make your home all you want it to be.

Northwest Drywall Company Putting Integrity in Place By Kristie Darling

“INTEGRITY is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; a personal sense of fairness. Doing the right thing in a reliable way; following a moral compass that doesn’t waiver, as in, “He is known to be a man of integrity.”

Photos provided by Northwest Drywall Company

Integrity is a word we don’t throw around haphazardly, without consideration. Integrity recognizes a person’s honor, honesty, ethics, and reliability. It is a trait we see in someone’s words and works…it makes a person who they have come to be in life. Steve Jordan is a self-made business man who has achieved success and recognition in his industry by staying true to the integrity he knows is the foundation of good business. A BIT OF HISTORY “My brother, Sam, wanted to go into the drywall business,” Steve Jordan shared when we sat down to talk about his business and his life. “That was in 1972. Sam and I really got into it in ‘73 when we incorporated, and the rest is history, as they say.” Sam and Steve married sisters in 1962 and had a double wedding. Sam worked in sales for US Gypsum, and Steve was a traveling salesman for James H. Matthews Company. “We were at our in-law’s for Easter one year when we started talking about drywall. I didn’t know what a piece of drywall was, but I told Sam to let me know if he wanted a partner. A couple weeks later, we were in business,” Steve remembered. “Sam suggested a 6040 partnership, but I had enough confidence in myself to insist on 50-50. We started out as sheet-rockers. Worked out of Sam’s basement the first three months and moved all the material ourselves. It took us three years to move into a building of our own.” By 1975, Northwest Drywall had 15 employees. The brothers bought the property where the company is now, just north of Second Avenue, east of the airport—on the northwest side of Hickory, of course. “We put 10,000 square feet into the building and kept expanding. Every three years or so, we’d add 5,000 square feet. This industrial section of town has grown with us.”

Sam ran the inside of the business, purchasing, bookkeeping, billing and such. “I ran the outside.” Steve said. “We never had a serious argument, never crossed each other. We started out doing mostly residential work, but soon realized that chasing houses

wasn’t going to get us where we wanted to be—a total drywall construction business.” Today, the company’s main business is commercial construction, primarily industrial, educational, worship, banking, retail, racing, hospitality, institutional, and medical facilities. They operate a materials, equipment, and tools sales desk for drywall companies in the area.

SPECIALIZING IN… “In the beginning, we built a reputation for working with architects who’d call, wanting to know how to draw the details and write specs…sometimes builders would call and have no plans, so we’d build it together. Give us a shell and we’ll finish it,” Steve continued. “By the mid80s, we’d done work for every major contractor in a 30-mile radius.” The company endured three recessions in the last 40+ years and built the capacity to manage any challenges they encountered. “We were working on a hotel in Asheville, for instance, and we couldn’t find enough gas to get there, so we installed our own gas tank. We weren’t going to get cut short like that again.” Back in the day, 85 percent of Northwest Drywall’s business was industrial construction. “We’ve had a great partnership with Corning Corporation for years. We’ve probably remodeled at Corning six times or more, and we have projects going on there now,” Chris Bryan told me.

Chris is president and CEO at Northwest Drywall, and he sees continued growth and expansion in its future. “Our clients come back time and again because Steve and Sam built a reputation for excellent quality work that is competitively priced by a team of skilled, reliable people—a simple but effective business plan,” Chris said. “We started work on First Plaza in the 1970s, and that partnership continues today.” WHAT WE DO Over the years, Northwest has become a company that can fulfill the drywall requirements of any construction project. Their expertise includes gypsum board finishing of metal framing, insulation installation, large commercial projects, custom design, plaster renovation, and acoustic sound control in churches, schools, auditoriums—anywhere noise is a problem. “Plaster work is very specialized,” Steve explained. “There is very little plaster work around and even fewer craftsmen left to do the work. The renovations of the SALT Block building required a considerable amount of plaster renovation and even more in Lenoir Rhyne University’s Mauney Music Hall.” Custom designs in drywall can include intricate shapes and placements, some requiring hundreds of pieces of cut drywall to create a unique look or design. Working in a tight radius, bending drywall around curves, arches, and

domes are specialties. Chris told me they constructed the huge ceiling dome where world-renowned artist Ben Long painted his fresco in CoMMA, Morganton’s municipal auditorium. Recent and current jobs include Verizon stores across North Carolina from the mountains to the coast, Foreign Cars Italia in Greensboro and Bentley Maserati in Charlotte, the Minges Science addition at Lenoir Rhyne, and many projects at Appalachian State. A private residence was featured in Architectural Digest in 2014. Northwest Drywall Company has worked in most of the buildings you see throughout Catawba county.

Photos provided by Northwest Drywall Company

IT’S WHO WE ARE “We’ve worked with Chris at Northwest Drywall for over 15 years, and he’s a great guy,” says Danny Jordan, corporate director of construction at Paramount Auto Group. “Steve established a strong philosophy for how the company operates, which is to say they go above and beyond to satisfy their clients—always excellent quality at a competitive price.” Northwest Drywall has a reputation for getting a lot of work done with their team. Chris said, “We have tremendous relationships—we’re preferred contractors—with our vendors and customers. They are part of our family, and we treat them that way. Some of our employees have been with us for 30 years and more.” Every single hourly employee, from day one, received 100% paid health insurance, and the company has given employee bonuses every year they’ve been in business, even borrowed money to make that happen. “Sam and I could have been kazillionaires if we’d kept all the profits for ourselves, but that’s not the Christian thing to do. We love our people, and I’m proud of my life and what I’ve done with it…there’s very little since my 21st birthday that I regret,” Steve said with a smile. What is he most proud of in his career? “The quality of our work. We’ve never produced junk. Every job we’ve run, we’ve built the best product and provided total satisfaction.”

CONTACT: Northwest Drywall Company 1088 3rd Avenue Drive NW, Hickory (828) 324-5100 • (800) 682-4031 www.northwestdrywallcompany.com

WHAT’S NEXT Some things have changed. Chris Bryan took the reins in 2005. Sam Jordan passed away three years ago. “Sam and I started this company, and Chris will keep it going,” Steve told me. “With Chris taking over, I can sleep at night. The entire team at Northwest Drywall Company has made it what it is today, and without these fine people, it would not have worked. It’s one thing to start strong, but your reputation depends on finishing strong.” Integrity lives here, and it shows in every sheet of drywall that goes up in every building Northwest Drywall completes. Embracing Heritage While Adapting for the Future By Meredith Collins | Photos by Shane Greene Photography

Killians Hardware has been a trusted business icon serving the Hickory community for the last 66 years. The third and fourth generation owners continue their success as they adapt to serve the next generation of customers. Founded by Emory Killian in 1953, the store still thrives, now operated by granddaughters, Susan Killian Kirby and Sharon Killian Radke and great-granddaughters Jennifer Gott and Whitney Kirby. Sharon and Susan have a simple and successful business model—working hard, assembling the right team, and aligning themselves with the best manufactures. They sell top brands including Toro residential and landscape contractor equipment, Husqvarna, Stihl, and Echo products. “We have the same values as 18

HICKORY LIVING • MARCH 2019

we did 66 years ago, but we continue to change to be the best we can be, to better serve our customers,” Sharon said. At Killians, customers get quality products and the knowledge and support to go along with them. Whether it’s a certain type of fertilizer or herbicide that should only be applied during warm or cool temperatures or a piece of equipment, Killians staff can educate on proper use and maintenance of outdoor power equipment. Customers can demo any equipment displayed on their showroom floor. Every piece of equipment is sold assembled and serviced. The customer is then shown how to properly operate their new unit by the Killians qualified warehouse department. Killians also provides support whether in

or out of the warranty period. Their service department has been recognized as Master Service Dealer by The Toro Company and has three full-time credentialed mechanics. The parts department has over 50-years’ experience and the largest inventory in the southeast. “Killians can do your maintenance and repairs or help you obtain the parts you need to be able to do it yourself,” Sharon said. “This is something you cannot find at a big box store.” Killians has expanded its hardware department. They carry plumbing, electrical, power tools, and more, through their distributor Orgill. “Our hardware pricing is very competitive, and our employees can help you find exactly what you need,” Sharon said. Grass seed and golf

course quality fertilizers are always in stock. Honest, quality customer service is a strong pillar at Killians. Many Killians employees have worked there for 10 to 20-plus years. Bruce Hartsell, a 28-year employee, runs the hardware department. Other key managers are Howard Mourglea (parts), Scott Miller (service) and Art Meadows (warehouse). “If there’s

a problem, we deal with it,” Sharon said. “I’ll make a phone call, and we will make it right. We want to get as much feedback from customers as we can, and if we’re not providing a service that customers think they should get, we want to know. Our customers are not just customers, they are our friends. We go to church with them and see them out in the community. We love serving people, and we are only going to do what we truly believe in.”

If you are a commercial landscaper or a homeowner, the expert staff at Killians can help you find the right tools for your job and keep them in tip-top shape. Let Killians be your one-stop shop this spring. KILLIANS, INC www.killiansinc.com 3790 Springs Rd NE, Hickory 828-256-2147

A Creative Collaboration Between Builder and Homeowners

Moss-Marlow Building Company makes a magnificent new home warm and welcoming. By Kristie Darling | Photos provided by Moss-Marlow

When homeowners contact a custom builder, they sometimes need 100% guidance and sound advice. When they arrive with over 20-years of construction and home design experience, the partnership between homeowner and builder can create a home that is beyond amazing. That was the case when Ted and Beth Bohne were looking for a special place in the North Carolina mountains to relocate from Florida. While doing location research, they visited The Coves Mountain River Club, a highly acclaimed residential community in Collettesville. “We fell in love,” Beth shared, “with the community and the beautiful mountains. It’s a wonderful balance of rural living and close proximity to three major towns.” 20

“Building a home can be stressful, but the Bohnes knew exactly what they wanted,” said Jeff Knox, vice president of Moss-Marlow Building Company. The

couple needed a contractor who was receptive to their ideas with attention to detail, had excellent vendor relationships, and good communication—someone they could work with long-distance. When they first talked about the project, it was apparent this relationship would work. Jeff’s company is a preferred builder at The Coves, another help in choosing Moss-Marlow. “I would recommend Moss-Marlow to anyone who requires top quality workmanship,” Ted stated. Jerry Eldreth kept us up to date throughout the process, answering questions and posting updates via the Builder Trend site. He was a blessing,” said Ted. “Randy Hart, project manager, explained

designed by Annas Landscaping, highlights lawn, flowers, scrubs, and woods. At sundown, the landscape shimmers with lighting designed by Sundown Solutions.

WELCOME HOME “We consider the style of our house, elegant mountain. It’s perfect for all we love to do,” Beth said. “We entertain and like our guests to be part of all that’s going on. Jeff made certain the entrance was inviting.” Coach lights welcome you down the driveway to a flagstone walk and front porch. Gracious landscaping,

The couple opted for an open floor plan so they can enjoy their guests everywhere in the house. Ted designed the layout and Beth did the interior design. Open dining, a puzzle and card-playing corner, a bar for gathering, and a spacious mainfloor living area, make this an inviting home to all. Beth’s interior designs center on rich colors—griege, beige, gray, black,

with splashes of red—that soak up sunlight and highlight natural materials and finishes. Hand-selected lighting coordinates throughout. Hanging high in the living room is a magnificent Kitchler chandelier, placed among the over-sized wood beams of the vaulted ceiling in front of the impressive 23-foot stone fireplace. Iron and wood fixtures surround guests in warm light. “Every space was designed for a particular use. Ted and Beth each have an office; we included a personal gym and heated tile floors in the laundry room for their dogs,” Jeff said.

A custom hood in black completes the look. “The kitchen needed to work for two or twenty,” Jeff explained. “We installed double ovens, Bosch gas cooktop, two wine coolers, and under the counter fridge; all the appliances any chef would need.” “Jeff helped us create feel-good rooms with special touches that make each one 22

work,” Beth continued. “The master and its bath continue our theme with a stone feature wall in the shower and a stone shower pan beneath a raw cut stone slab bench for comfort. The Moss-Marlow team did an extraordinary job on the stonework and tile in this house. They have the best team, fantastic, on-site supervision, and dedicated trades to complete each phase of the project”

“Of course, the view is integral to the design,” Jeff explained. “The doors and windows, open railings, stone pillars, and stairs down to the wrap-around patio were selected to bring the land into view. These five acres merge into the mountains from your perspective at the back of the house. Ted told me it’s hard to concentrate when he’s in his office.” The outdoors beckons!

A SETTING YOU CAN’T FORGET The 1,200 square foot deck offers a spectacular view of Table Rock, Brown, Hawksbill, and Grandfather Mountains from several seating areas, the long table for ten, the hot tub, the outdoor shower, and the adjacent master bedroom.

If home is where you want to be, Ted and Beth are certainly where they’re supposed to be. “I wouldn’t change a thing,” Beth shared, “When the sun sets at the end of the day, it’s heaven on earth. The day I first walked into the finished house, I cried…of course I did.”

Interior Design Trends By Jessica Fox When it comes to home interiors, you will benefit by hiring a professional to help you design your space both aesthetically and for function. Knowing which trends are on their way out is just as important as knowing new styles coming in and can extend the life of your purchases. Interior designers can forecast the up-and-coming trends and help you weave your favorite pieces into a gorgeous space that you can enjoy for years to come. I recently spoke with Sally Bentley, a registered/certified interior designer, a professional member of the American Society of Interior Design (ASID), and founder of Designing Women, Inc. located in the Hickory Furniture Mart. She was in Texas designing a home and graciously gave me some time for a short interview.

Sally Bentley, interior designer with Designing Women located in the Hickory Furniture Mart

“The art of entertaining at home is making a comeback,” Sally said. “People really want beautiful and elegant design in their accessories and furniture.” With that in mind, I asked her to share some insight on the home design trends we have to look forward to in 2019. Here are her responses:

Interior paint color palettes:

Fabrics:

“We will see greens, pinks, and purples. Beautiful neutrals are coming back with warmer tones, which we are excited about, versus the cooler tones of past years.”

“Colorful florals and toile will make a comeback!”

Window treatments: “Draw draperies and side panels will continue to be the trend.”

Furniture: “Furniture will be all about color, elegance, softness, and curves.”

Flooring and tile: Photos taken by Aleah Leigh Photography and provided by

“Wood floors and marble tile will continue to be popular choices. And, we will definitely see more patterns in tiles.” Hopefully Sally’s advice will help you design your space, and if you find all your options too overwhelming, need direction, or can’t make a decision, call an interior designer!

Home DIY Projects

By Cheryl Grant

Stripping wallpaper, a fresh coat of paint, and removing doors gave the dining room a new look. (Before photos courtesy of Hickory Real Estate Group. After photos by Kathy Wheeler)

Buying a home that’s a fixer upper requires vision. Not everyone sees its potential, but because it is outdated, you can get all that potential at a great price. With some hard work and a remodel, you have plenty of room to build equity. A friend of mine, who doesn’t mind getting her hands dirty and loves putting her stamp on a home, recently purchased a fixer-upper. It’s not her first, and the home she bought had great bones but was terribly out of date style-wise. She came up with a short-game of DIY projects and a long-range remodeling plan for those issues that would require a professional. The first project on her DIY list was to strip outdated wallpaper and paint the interior. Taking down wallpaper is a messy job and much easier to do before you move all of your furniture in. With a few updated colors applied to the walls and some new furniture, the inside had

a new life. It’s amazing what a little paint and hard work can do! One of the most impressive transformations came with inexpensive updates to the front facade. The brick house had white shutters that were crumbling and a white door with brass hardware. The front door was covered with a screen door that had seen better days, so she removed it. The small stoop had a dated iron railing around it, making it feel cramped and smaller than it really was, so the stoop was opened up by removing the railing. The shutters were replaced with black paneled shutters. The Habitat ReStore had two sets of new shutters for $7.00 a pair and the short set came from a hardware store. At this point, she had spent $64 on her update, and the biggest transformation was yet to come—the front door. All the brass door hardware was removed, cleaned, and spray-painted

black. The next step was to choose a pop of color for the door. Most paint brands have web-based software to help you visualize and choose color. You can upload a photo of what you are painting and place color on the trim, walls, doors, etc. No paint swatches are needed! I have to say that the quart of light teal paint she purchased for the front door delivered the best bang for her buck and completed this phase of the renovation. These updates came in at a price tag of less than $100! An older home has usually been through renovations and updates over the years. Some may have been done properly and others not. By removing items that were installed incorrectly, that don’t fit the style of the home, or are outdated can improve the look and feel of your home tremendously and cost next to nothing. Sometimes, paint and some sweat equity are all you need to restore the look of a perfectly delightful home.

What's Cooking?! Pasta and Chicken in Garlic Cream Sauce

Warm meals that come together quickly are a necessity for busy families, especially on weeknights filled with homework, practices, meetings and more. Serving up comfort foods that require less time in the kitchen make for more moments spent together at the table. This rich and creamy, one-dish dinner requires less than 45 minutes of kitchen duty.

Pasta and Chicken in Garlic Cream Sauce Recipe courtesy of Milk Means More Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Servings: 8

slices bacon, cut crosswise into 1/2-inch-wide pieces ¾ pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 3/4inch pieces 10 ounces (about 4 cups) bow tie pasta 2 ½ cups reduced-sodium chicken broth 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 ½ teaspoons dried Italian seasoning ½ teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper 1 cup heavy cream 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 3 cups baby spinach leaves 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes, for garnish Directions Place removable pan inside programmable pressure cooker.

Using saute function, cook bacon, uncovered, until crisp. Use slotted spoon to remove bacon from pan. Drain bacon on paper towels. Leave 1 tablespoon drippings in pan; discard remaining. Add chicken to bacon drippings in pan in two batches. Using saute function, stir-fry chicken 2-3 minutes, or until cooked through. Use slotted spoon to remove chicken from pan. Repeat until all chicken is cooked. Press cancel. Stir pasta, broth, garlic, Italian seasoning and pepper into drippings in pan. Secure lid and set pressure release to sealing function. Select high pressure setting and cook 5 minutes. Press cancel.

Allow pressure to release naturally for 5 minutes. Move pressure release to venting function to release any remaining steam. Remove lid. Stir cream into pasta mixture. Using saute function, cook and stir, uncovered, until boiling. Boil, uncovered, about 4 minutes, or until sauce generously coats pasta, stirring frequently. Press cancel. Stir in chicken and Parmesan cheese. Place spinach and bacon in large bowl. Pour pasta mixture over top. Toss until combined. Ladle into serving bowls. Top each serving with tomatoes. Surgical Options for Weight Loss

Photos:

Above–Lisa Craig, photos of before and after surgery Left–Pictured left to right– Jodi Lanier, NP; Jonathan Hata, MD; Monty Cox, MD; and Baker Henson, DO Wake Forest Baptist Health now offers surgical options for weight loss in Hickory for individuals who need more than dieting and exercise regimens to improve their health. Drs. Monty Cox, Jonathan Hata, and Baker Henson of Surgical Specialists – Hickory offer minimally invasive approaches that include Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, vertical sleeve gastrectomy, and duodenal switch. Surgery is the best available treatment for individuals who are morbidly obese, which is defined as: • A body mass index (BMI) over 40 • A BMI over 35 with severe negative health effects, such as high blood pressure or diabetes “When a person develops morbid obesity, their chance of achieving meaningful long-term weight loss with traditional diet and exercise is near zero,” Dr. Cox said. 34

HICKORY LIVING • MARCH 2019

Evaluation and Surgery Options Before surgery, patients undergo an in-depth nutrition, fitness, and psychological evaluation that is used to create a personalized treatment plan for surgery and recovery. As minimally invasive procedures, the surgeries generally involve less pain, fewer complications, and shorter recovery times.

Lisa Craig was 30 and had reached 310 pounds when she had surgery in 2002. “I wanted to enjoy doing everyday things with my family that, at that weight, were just not possible,” Lisa said. She has maintained her weight at 210 pounds for the past 10 years. “Since the surgery, I’ve been able to cross my legs, bend over to tie my shoes, and walk without having to catch my breath. Surgery helped me make the lifestyle changes I needed.”

Attend the Free Monthly Seminar After surgery, all patients receive a follow-up care program designed by a multidisciplinary care team. It includes required exercise and a new eating plan. “The more patients learn about surgery, the better they seem to do,” Dr. Cox says. “That’s why our program has always emphasized patient education, both before and after surgery.”

Anyone interested in learning more about surgical options for weight loss is invited to attend a free seminar held each month that includes the physicians from Surgical Specialists – Hickory. For more information, call 828-327-9178.
