Welcome to the June issue.

School will let out for summer break this month, so we hope you enjoy our Summer Fun theme. Local water parks and theme parks are always a favorite for families with children and the young at heart. If you are a wine lover, take a day or weekend to visit some of the wineries in our area.

Father’s Day is Sunday, June 16th. Being a dad to three young children, has made me more appreciative of my own father’s sacrifices and challenges in balancing work and family.

Let your dad, or any important father figure know that you appreciate their efforts, love and influence. Getting a big hug and a handmade card from my own children will be a cherished gift!

Friday, June 21st is the first day of summer and if this spring was any indication, it is going to be a hot one. Enjoying the outdoors in heat requires a little planning. Drink plenty of water and wear sun screen. Plan as much outdoor fun as possible during the cooler mornings and evenings, and stay close to A/C during the hottest part of the day.

Kathryn has been married for 18 years to Dixon Herman, and they have a son, 14-year-old Boone, who likes baseball. CELEBRATING

Father's Day

The role of fatherhood has changed somewhat over the last decade. Men are taking a more involved role in handling the day-to-day activities of child rearing, and they are very good at it. They don't sweat the small stuff and use the time spent with their children to have some fun and teach them much needed principles and skills.

When our kids were small, I stayed at home with them until they started school and then went back into the public workforce. It became my husband’s job to pick them up after school and take care of them until I got off from work.

They always had some time to kill before Dad began guitar lessons, and they had to start their homework. Usually that extra time was spent in the arcade at the mall, and the kids loved it! Sometimes in the summer, they might start their day visiting a local water park before returning home to do chores and such.

I remember my husband was great at balancing fun and work where the kids were concerned. Now that our children are young adults and have their own agenda, it is a rare occasion that they ask for our input, but I know it does their father good when they need his help or advice.

With the additional duties added to fatherhood, a few things have remained the same–dads’ love for their children, their self-imposed responsibility to support and protect their family, their desire for their children to admire and respect them...and fathers still enjoy being a hero in the eyes of their family. One of my husband’s favorite Father's Day gifts was a “Greatest Dad in the World” T-shirt. He wore it with pride until it was worn out.

Now I will say that buying gifts for Father's Day can be a bit of a challenge.

Men enjoy receiving functional gifts,

whether for some project at home or to complement a hobby. If your father enjoys golf, a gift certificate for green fees or a set of golf clubs may be the perfect gift. If he enjoys fishing, a new rod and reel, a set of lures, or a cabin rental at his favorite fishing location might make a great gift. Maybe music is his thing. If so, concert tickets might make a great gift.

The options are as unique as each male recipient.

Even though fathers are usually not the mushy type, I have found that they still enjoy being told they are loved and respected. Give your dad a big hug and consider putting the mush in a card, so he doesn’t get emotional in front of everyone. If you really want to make his day perfect...ask for his advice. You may be surprised at the sound wisdom you receive, and once again your father will get to be what he has always wanted to be...your hero!

Treat Pain Quickly, Without Surgery

Chronic pain can interfere with daily activities and cause people to be unable to perform routine, daily tasks. Often chronic pain is accompanied by anxiety and depression and can make the sufferer feel isolated and hopeless.

Southeast Pain & Spine Care at Blue Ridge Pain Management helps patients control their pain and improve their quality of life through interventional pain management and non-invasive treatment options. They specialize in non-surgical spine care. Their convenient Hickory location has four providers: Dr. Martin Evans, Dr. Troy Gingerich, Amy Tillison, PA-C, and Deborah Johnson, FNP. 18

Dr. Gingerich believes the multidisciplinary approach SEPSC uses is highly effective. “It’s not just pain medicines and not just procedures,” he said. “We look at the whole patient and not only treat symptoms but look at the entirety of the patient’s health status to improve their overall wellbeing, physically and mentally.”

The practice sees patients with varying forms of pain. The typical treatment plan begins with non-invasive options like physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, or acupuncture. Medications may be prescribed, and if so, are managed within FDA and state regulations. Interventional procedures like injections, spi-

nal cord stimulation, radiofrequency, and neuromodulation are also offered and can be used in conjunction with other therapies to tailor each patient’s care in order to meet their individual needs.

All providers echoed the same sentiments that they want people to know: they do so much more than just medication management. “Patients are sometimes nervous before their first visit because they are unsure about what we can do to alleviate their pain, but there is so much more to what we offer other than opioid medication management,” said Deborah Johnson, nurse practitioner.

The PAs and FNPs at SEPSC are vital to the practice’s successes. Most new patients see either Deborah or Amy, at their initial evaluation. After an assessment of the patient’s situation and determination of their needs, the patient meets the doctor. Together, the providers work to develop a treatment plan.

“We evaluate patients and recommend a multimodal treatment plan,” Amy said.

“We see patients in follow-up to manage

medications and assess response between procedures performed by the physicians, as well as perform procedures like joint injections as clinically indicated.”

YADKIN VALLEY WINE TRAILS

By JC Summerford The Yadkin Valley Wine Region winds through the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northwestern North Carolina. It’s home to the state’s first American Viticultural Area, the Yadkin Valley AVA. Here, you can experience dozens of wineries, large and small. Each one offers handcrafted, award-winning wines ranging from standard varietals to proprietor blends to sweet, fruit-based wines. Tastings and tours are available, but be sure to check each vineyard’s schedule.

We suggest spending a weekend following one of the region’s wine trails, areas where four or five vineyards are nestled close together. Pencil in plenty of time for nature hikes, fishing, horseback riding, canoeing, hang gliding, or even an adventurous llama trek! You can also shop at quaint antique stores, galleries and markets.

Of course, you’ll want to end each day with a relaxing sip of wine, overlooking lush green hills and mountain sunsets.

While a few wineries offer cabins or campgrounds, you should check in advance about nearby accommodations. Hotels, inns, and BNBs abound in the region. Likewise, several vineyards offer meals or snacks, while others only provide picnic areas, so you’ll have to plan accordingly. Weddings and special events are regular occurrences in Wine Country–so always call ahead for reservations.

While we don’t have room to describe each winery in detail, we’ll get you started down the Yadkin Valley Wine Trails with some of our favorites.

SWAN CREEK Four vineyards are established in the lovely town of Hamptonville, just a few minutes apart.

Spiced Pecan Grilled Peach Salad with Goat Cheese Spiced Pecans: 1 egg white 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper ¼ teaspoon kosher salt 2 cups pecan halves Salad Dressing: ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil or pecan oil ¼ cup white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard ¼ teaspoon garlic powder ⅛ teaspoon kosher salt ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper Salad 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil or pecan oil 2 large peaches, halved & pitted 6 cups mixed baby greens 4 ounces soft goat cheese Directions Pecans: Heat oven to 275° F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper.

In bowl, whisk egg white, brown sugar, cinnamon, cayenne pepper and salt until well combined.

Fold in pecans and mix until evenly coated. Spread in single layer on baking sheet.

Bake 45-50 minutes, stirring occasionally until pecans are fragrant and golden brown. Allow to cool completely.

Salad Dressing: In bowl, whisk ¼ cup olive oil, white wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Set aside.

Salad: Brush cut sides of peach

halves with remaining olive oil; grill until grill lines appear and peaches become tender, about 3-5 minutes. Remove peaches and slice.

Divide greens among four plates.

Top with grilled peach slices and goat cheese. Divide 1 cup spiced pecans evenly among salads and reserve remaining for snack. Top each salad with drizzle of vinaigrette.
