u o Y Year

A New A New for By Kathy Wheeler

The New Year is all about a fresh start. If you do nothing else this New Year, create a vision of what your life would look like if you had no limitations and could do anything you wanted to do. It may sound silly to think this way, because after all, no one’s life is perfect or truly balanced. We bounce around doing what needs to be done instead of what we want to do. So, you may be asking, “What is the point?” The point is we will keep doing the same thing without a vision! The point is to move toward what we want our lives to become, instead of remaining complacent with where we are. The vision itself will have you subconsciously making decisions to move toward it. With that image in mind, you can identify the changes you need to make and take steps to begin. But, without a vision of where you are going, you aren’t going to get very far. You are the CEO of your life. Just like any company, the decisions you make today affect your future. Your current happiness and success, or the lack thereof, are results of the decisions you have made in the past. It's up to you to steer your future toward what you want. January is the perfect time to start something new, reinvent yourself, and make those changes you have been thinking about but never took the time to implement. It could be something to do with your appearance, such as reducing wrinkles or getting a new hair style or wardrobe; living healthier by making better food choices, losing weight, exercising more, or reducing stress; or improving your finances. Maybe you want to save and invest more or start living on a budget and look for ways to cut expenses. You might want to travel or mark things off your bucket list. For some, it might be to downsize and simplify their lives. The list is as different as the individual, and each change requires time, energy, and research. Hopefully, you will find some articles in this issue to help you make those adjustments. Some people hate change and others thrive on it. Either way it can be stressful to make such large modifications to your life. Breaking it into smaller steps can help you implement your changes and reduce the stress that goes along with it. At Hickory Living Magazine, we wish you a year of good changes moving you toward a more happy and healthy future!

Carolina Caring Enhancing the Quality of Life By Kristie Darling

Compassion, listening, expertise, and caring are the core competencies of any hospice program. When these components are aligned with hands-on end-oflife care, comfort and peace-of-mind are the result. Grateful families and their loved ones are the beneficiaries. In our region, the new name, Carolina Caring, is an important change that has been made to an already excellent organization, Catawba Regional Hospice, whose services have improved the lives of thousands of our families, friends, and neighbors for the past forty years. “We’re still the same organization,” said David Cook, CEO of Carolina Caring. “And we believe our new name better reflects who we are. Almost everyone I’ve spoken with is pleased with our new name—it raises the question, ‘What is this about?’ We’re always glad to share our story.” Carolina in the new name places not only this organization’s location but also its reach. “Our service area includes 12 North Carolina counties that surround 12

Celebrating

Catawba County,” David explained. “With this large footprint, it’s critical that we aspire to our vision to be ‘the most valued and preferred resource to patients, families, and partners in the communities we serve.’ All of our healthcare providers, staff, administrators, and volunteers live this vision every day…and they deliver world-class performance through continual learning, best practices, and innovation. It’s who we are.” Caring is both an adjective and a verb in the new name. The organization exemplifies caring through its mission to enhance living. Without active and focused caring on everyone’s part, the organization wouldn’t survive, nor would it have an extraordinary 40-year legacy to celebrate this year. “Our team understands the uplifting effect of caring in everything we do,” Jason Meyer, marketing director, told me. “Our menu of services is more than most people probably know about, but when families experience any one of them, they feel the caring our people bring into their lives.” Every day.

ments in healthcare. At the same time, we’re living with more chronic conditions and unique health situations. Modern life has changed the way we live, and hospice and palliative care have changed the way we manage disease and end-of-life needs. We’re here to support patients and families in all stages of these transitions.” PALLIATIVE MEDICINE Feeling comfortable and at ease in daily living are the goals of Carolina Caring’s palliative medicine program. For people of any age living with chronic conditions, such as COPD, heart, kidney, or liver disease, dementia, cancer, recurring pneumonia, and other illnesses, palliative medicine is a godsend. Compassionate caregivers provide support in managing existing medical care.

PROGRAMS OF CARE “Healthcare needs are different today than when we started in 1978,” David shared. “We’re living longer through advance-

Comments like this are common: “We had so many questions, and you took the time to answer every one!” Many people don’t know very much about palliative care, but this critical healthcare service can mean the difference between suffering and comfort. Palliative medicine provides care and support for those not eligible for hospice services. Palliative care can begin with a diagnosis and continue throughout treatment. “Our treatment plans are developed working closely with the doctor and are based on the individual person and their condition,” Scott Lofland, director of palliative care operations, told me. “We help manage and treat physical symptoms caused by your illness, and our caregivers are very helpful to support emotional, social, or spiritual issues you and your family have, as well.” Patients and families who have need for a better quality of life, to help make important medical decisions, or to reduce trips to the ER or hospital stays should contact Carolina Caring earlier rather than later. Patients can receive care in Carolina Caring’s medical clinics or at home, in a nursing home, or hospital. HOSPICE—UNDERSTANDING OPTIONS Unfortunately, there’s a misunderstanding out there that hospice care is only for someone at death’s door; that you wouldn’t want hospice care because it’s just for patients without hope, and once you are enrolled, there’s no going back. That isn’t true. Eligible patients have an advanced illness with a life expectancy of six months or less. These patients want to focus on quality of life rather than curative treatments. If your health improves, you can be discharged, and if you live beyond six months, you can remain in the program. “People don’t understand that they have earned the right to access this care,” David said. “This is a benefit Medicare provides. We can answer questions and partner with families to manage hands-on solutions, so they don’t have to navigate these circumstances on their own. It’s not easy to do all this for someone you love—we’re here to help in many ways.” “Both my parents wanted to be at home, and the caregivers we worked with made that happen. It was the very best thing we did,” Beth Huffman told me. “From the first hospice workers we spoke with to those who set everything up for us at home and the people

who helped at the end, I can’t compliment them more. They focus on patients first, of course, but the kindness and compassion our family received was a blessing. It’s always hard, but hospice makes it easier.” Patients can choose which hospice they want to work with. You should select the provider that offers the best care for your needs; you can choose a hospice outside your county of residence. Carolina Caring’s slate of services includes care for people of all ages, including children, those with rare diseases, advance care planning, and weekend admissions. They are nationally accredited with an excellent reputation. When hospice care cannot be provided at home, a peaceful, home-like setting is the next best place to be. Catawba Valley Hospice House and Sherrills Ford Hospice House are each located in the Foothills of North Carolina, in quiet, rural settings. I was impressed with their charm and comforts of home, as well as state-of-the-art medical care. These locations are staffed with physicians and nurses knowledgeable in hospice and palliative medicine who can help when symptoms can’t be managed at home or when a caregiver needs a break. WE HONOR VETERANS Achieving the highest level with the national We Honor Veterans program is a huge achievement, and Carolina Caring has done that. “We make sure our staff understand that end-of-life care for veterans is different,” Jason said. “We have considerable volunteer support for this, and our veterans and their families feel the highest level of compassion and support every day.” CENTER FOR GRIEF & HEALING As we know, grief comes in many forms, unique to each of us. Grieving adults and children are cared for in several ways, even people who are not immediately involved with Carolina Caring. “Grief can manifest when something’s lost that is significant in your life,” David explained. “We welcome grieving families in any circumstance. Brighter Days Grief Camp for children and teens is one of our most important community programs.” Explore all that Carolina Caring does for our communities by visiting www.carolinacaring.org. If someone in your life might benefit from hospice or palliative care, just call. Your questions will be answered, and your decisions will become easier. Most families say, “I wish I’d called sooner.” You can learn a lot just by asking…it could truly change your life.

Improve Your

ZZZs By J.C. Summerford

© iStockphoto.com | MilanMarkovic

Do you flop around like a freshly caught trout, howl like an industrial wood chipper, or pass out like a paralytic zombie? We’re talking about sleep, of course. And no matter your personal style, snoozing is essential to your mental and physical health. Sleep isn’t a passive physical state during which we simply recuperate from the day’s stresses. Our brains are more active during sleep than when we’re awake, cycling through complex electrical and chemical patterns that repair cells and re-set bodily systems. Beyond feelings of tiredness and lethargy, improper sleep can lead to serious health issues such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and psychiatric disorders. Although there is no right amount, most experts recommend that adults get 7-10 hours of quality sleep every night. About a third of Americans experience disrupted or inadequate sleep, but there are plenty of things you can try to improve your ZZZs, no matter the cause. STRESS Stress often forms a feedback loop. You’re too stressed to sleep soundly, then the lack of sleep brings on exhaustion, muscle aches, headaches, heart palpitations—which all make it tougher to sleep. Night time rituals such as deep breathing, a warm bath, reading a calm20

HICKORY LIVING • JANUARY 2019

ing book or sipping caffeine-free tea or milk can go a long way to promoting world-class sleep. Exercising regularly (a few hours before bed) and maintaining a consistent schedule are also good ideas. ENVIRONMENT A peaceful, quiet bedroom is essential to a great night’s slumber. Make sure the temperature is just right—not too hot or cool. Decorate the room with pastels or neutral colors and choose a mattress and pillow combination that suits your sleep preferences and body type. Using mentally stimulating cell phones, TVs, video games, and tablets just before bedtime can cause serious sleep deficiency. This goes for both adults and children, so enforce a digital curfew for the entire family at least an hour before you retire. FOOD AND DRINK Most people know that coffee and alcohol have a negative impact on sleep, but soda can be equally detrimental. Sodas contain caffeine and sweeteners which increase brain activity, and their carbonation contributes to heartburn. It goes without saying that drinking lots of any liquid just before bed often will bring on that annoying middle-of-the-night trip to the loo.

SNORING Snoring has a number of causes: obesity, excessive alcohol, nasal or airway obstructions, and sleep apnea. Snoring’s effects are both physical and psychological—any couple dealing with it can attest to that. Besides sturdy earplugs, your doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine, or even surgery. INSOMNIA We toss the word insomnia around like a throw pillow, but it’s actually a complex medical condition. Only 10 percent of people have true insomnia, which consists of having trouble falling or staying asleep, persistent low energy, and moodiness. It’s no surprise that insomniacs experience relationship and work problems and are more accidentprone. If you’re not sleeping well for at least three nights per week, it’s time to see a doctor. In conclusion, if you’re not sleeping well for any reason, don’t ignore the problem. With a little effort, you can recover the ability to sleep like a baby. And don’t be jealous of your little one for his afternoon nappy time. Even brief sleep sprints can re-energize body and spirit. Grab that elusive siesta whenever you can!

Tips To Accomplish Your

By Lauren Davidson

It’s that time of year. The one where gym membership rates skyrocket, and everyone is suddenly very committed to eating more vegetables, exercising more, and swearing off the delicious carbs they’ve been consuming from Thanksgiving to Christmas. While we all may have good intentions, there’s a reason that January 17 has been recognized to be Ditch Your New Year's Resolution Day—it’s because it takes more than good intentions to make a resolution stick. Forming good habits shouldn’t only be in repentance from all those Christmas cookies. It’s more about a longstanding commitment to a lifestyle change. According to the research, good things take time. So if you’re in it for the long haul, I’ve compiled some tips so that you don’t have to. Slow and steady wins the race. Forbes recommends setting realistic goals and holding yourself accountable, even through monetary means. Says Raul Villacis of The Next Level Experience, “The one reason why people don't stick to new-year resolutions is that there are very little tangible consequences if they don't follow through. Most people are 28

not driven by pleasure, they are driven by pain. So create a consequence that hurts. Put a monetary consequence every 30 days if you don't follow through. And increase it or decrease it as time goes by. Find your pain point.” 21 days is not enough. Psychology Today has recently debunked the myth that habits take a total of 21 days to form. “According to a recent study, a daily action like eating fruit at lunch or running for fifteen minutes took an average of sixty-six days to become as much of a habit as it would ever become.” This ties in with American Psychological Association’s findings that it takes time to make lasting changes. We all know that a healthy diet and exercise are the only ways to lose weight and keep it off, but many of us are willing to undergo crash diets or even worse, diet pills. When the weight inevitably comes back, it’s easy to find yourself in a bad cycle. Sometimes the simplest answer is the right one. It may not be easy, but in the long run, it’s the only way to keep your habit strong: by choosing day after day to take steps in the right direction.

Be SMART about your resolution. The Washington Post cites sociologist Christine Whelan’s research that indicates “the best way to make a resolution, stick with it, and change is a system called SMART. The resolution needs to be: Specific Measurable There’s a Reward for sticking to it And progress is Trackable.” The Post also notes that “One of the best change strategies is to automate, so the new behavior becomes a habit and you don’t even have to think about it. BJ Fogg, who researches behavior at Stanford, has come up with what he calls Tiny Habits. One of his famous resolutions was every time he went to the bathroom, he did three pushups. He automated the habit. So, instead of going to the gym for an hour, he did 30 push-ups a day, getting the benefit of a workout without having to think about it.” Again, repetition and recognizing that you’re human and sticking with it anyway seem to be the keys to success when setting a new resolution. Good luck this year!

Avoiding clutter in your home, work space, AND in your mind is essential to time management. Developing habits to deal with excessive information and stuff that comes your way is helpful. The more things you do habitually, the less your mind is cluttered with minor decisions, and can focus on major decisions! Clean up your email account. Unsubscribe to email lists you don’t want to receive. Delete emails immediately that you are not interested in to better concentrate on the items you are. Set your preferences on social media sites to not receive notifications of posts via email or on your phone. Instead go to the website when you have time to spend. The same goes for snail mail. Have a shred bin and a trash bin by the door. When you pick up your mail, only keep what you want or need. Have a filing system in place, so you only have to touch an item once or twice, instead of it lying on your desk or dining room table for weeks before you deal with it. That system may be as simple as a box for tax related items, or a few folders for paid and unpaid invoices. Or better yet, pay your monthly bills online, whether it is through your bank or with each vendor. Create a sheet that includes all vendor websites, account numbers, and login information. Having all the information on one page can prevent you from looking through invoices. Also, with paperless billing, you can avoid mail clutter and track your payments and expenses easily online. Switch your mind set in 2019 to acquiring experiences instead of stuff. We all make purchases based on wants instead of need. Before buying something that isn’t necessary, ask yourself, “Do I have a specific place to put it?” If the answer is no, then maybe spend that money on taking a friend to lunch, or having a facial or massage. Stuff weighs you down, but time spent on yourself or with a friend is time well spent!
