February is the month where matters of the heart, both literally and figuratively, come to mind.

Remember to wear red on February 2, National Wear Red Day, as a way of showing support and awareness for those who are battling cardiovascular disease. Each year, heart disease and stroke take away too many of our mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, and friends and neighbors. Much progress is being made against this killer, but the fight is not yet over. Visit the American Heart Association website, www.heart.org, to find out how you can help.

Valentine’s Day...the day for us men to show the ladies in our lives just how much they mean to us. Flowers, candy, a meal at a nice restaurant, and a gift certificate to a spa or boutique are all nice touches and ways to show our appreciation. However you decide to celebrate this special occasion, enjoy the day and your time together!

Bringing the Love This Valentine’s Day

February is a month filled with matters of the heart. On Valentine’s Day, we celebrate our relationships by showering those we love with cards, gifts and romantic gestures. It is always wonderful to receive such sentimental expressions, but relieving your significant other of chores, such as doing the dishes and laundry might say, “I love you” better than two dozen roses! Ouch!! In other words, a once a year gift, or “Of course I love you! I married you didn’t I?” isn’t enough to sustain a good relationship.

As if relationships weren’t complicated enough, right? Well, Dr. Gary Chapman, a longtime marriage counselor and author of a series of love language books, simplified things a bit when his first book was published in 1995 – The 5 Love Languages: The Secret to Love that Lasts. In my opinion, the message in this book is timeless and like most good advice, remains pertinent!

Maintaining a good connection requires work, whether with your soul mate, children, or extended family members.

Treating others the way you want to be

People have different priorities when it comes to feeling loved according to Dr. Chapman. Many readers have credited this book with saving their marriage

and it continues to be a good resource for those in a romantic relationship. Also, Dr. Chapman has expanded his series to include other family relationships, as well. The five languages in his first book are: Acts of Service, Physical Touch, Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, and Receiving Gifts. If your significant other’s love language is receiving gifts, then the two dozen roses will be a huge success.

However, if their love language is acts of service, then roses will be politely accepted, the effort appreciated, but won’t have the impact you desired if you are failing to help them with everyday tasks throughout the year.

Dr. Chapman has an online quiz that people can take to determine their love language. His book goes into more detail, but the quiz is a great place to start.

You will no doubt have different scores for each love language, but most have a predominant one that says, I LOVE YOU! If your partner is willing, take the quiz at www.5lovelanguages.com and share your results with each other. It will open your eyes to what to do in making your significant other feel loved by you and help you focus your effort on where it counts the most. You can download a pdf of the test or take it online. If you take it online, you will be required to provide your name and email address in order to receive your results, but the information when shared is priceless!

Yes, Valentine’s Day is celebrated once a year, but the success of this day’s efforts to express your love depends on what has taken place in your relationship throughout the year. Only a commitment to know each other better and intention from both partners can bring more harmony, happiness, and true feelings of being loved.

When someone in your life dies, who do you want with you? You want family.

This is a universal desire, and the Jenkins family understands how important that personal experience is, especially in grief. Carl and Lori Jenkins, and their son, Ben, bring the comfort of family to the services they offer. The funerals they help us plan are designed to “warm the soul and illuminate the memory.” It’s a simple premise that brings out our best feelings even when we’re not feeling our best.

HONEST BEGINNINGS Carl Jenkins’ career has been one of service for 30 years. His decision to enter the funeral profession was personal and proved well suited to his nature.

Carl is a gentle soul. “My dad died on Christmas Eve when I was 16. Neighbors came to see Mom, but she was inconsolable. When the funeral director came, sat beside her and held her hand, his words were like magic dust,” Carl recalls.

“When Mom understood she could rely on him, that he would help her through this, her entire countenance changed.

That captured my attention.

“I started working for a florist,” Carl continued. “God lined everything up so I could see, hear, and do things that helped prepare me. I haven’t looked back, except to remember the folks I’ve had the pleasure of serving since I started this journey.”

THE JENKINS FAMILY CARES ABOUT YOUR FAMILY Unlike many funeral homes around our area, Jenkins Funeral Home is a familyowned and operated enterprise. “Since he was little, Ben grew up in several funeral homes,” Carl said with a smile.

“He would answer the phone like he was the mini-boss and told me he wanted to do this when he grew up.” Ben is now a fully licensed funeral director and embalmer, as is Carl. Ben’s mark on the firm’s approach in today’s funeral service business is seen in many ways. “Ben understands this is a life, not a job. He also understands that families these days look for guidance in planning their loved one’s funeral in many the same ways they plan everything. They are tech savvy, so they want to email and text details. They respond to media, so they want quality sound and expertly edited family videos.

Lori’s experience working alongside her husband has set her in a special role.

Ben Jenkins keeps his finger on the pulse of the business.

Families have said they got the best and most helpful information from the people at Jenkins right from their

first call. They want to understand their options. “We explain how our facility is flexible and accommodating. From our peaceful chapel to our expansive Celebration Center, we can personalize a service to match a family’s culture, personalities, and deepest wishes,” Lori explained. “After visitation, after the service, the Celebration Center will be set up to suit whatever you want next—a family reunion, perhaps, complete with Grandma’s living room furniture set up for her children and grandchildren to relax in, to Dad’s old truck in attendance or his fishing gear set out. A meal can be brought in by the family or catered. A life-video of home movies and photographs might be shown, special music played while family reminisce and share stories. It can be as peaceful or festive a celebration as you wish.”

Several on-site burial options can be chosen. The former Startown Cemetery, dating back over a century, sits behind the funeral home. Renamed Jenkins Cemetery, it includes the green burial section and the Garden of Angels, a truly unique place where infants are buried. “For children under two years, we don’t charge for burial services,” Lori shared. “All that’s needed is for the family to purchase a small baby marker, so the grave will be forever marked. For young families, single parents, this means a lot. Our hospitals know about this service and relay this to families.”

In the planning is a Cremation Garden, a natural area surrounding a meandering path where cremation markers are placed. Several cremation packages are offered. Families can create a permanent memorial for all members. “People come here to remember their loved ones in their own way,” Kim Pugh told me. “Families plan reunions, picnics, or just gather to stroll, talk, and visit.” As aftercare coordinator, Kim’s role is to be there after the service for whatever is needed then or later.

These days, hometown, family-operated businesses passed down through generations are hard to come by. One unique business in Hickory has continued the tradition started by their family in 1953 when founder Emory Killian opened Killian’s Hardware.

The store still thrives, now operated by granddaughters, Susan Killian Kirby and Sharon Killian Radke, and great-granddaughters, Jennifer Gott and Whitney Kirby. “We really enjoy getting to work alongside our daughters, and we are thankful for the new perspective they bring to the changing retail business,” Sharon said.

The adult children of Emory’s customers are now served by the third and fourth generations of the Killian family. Customers not only come to shop, but often stop by just to visit. It’s just a “where everybody knows your name” type of store.

Having a strong sense of community and family, Susan and Sharon have carried on the traditions of their father and grandfather by supporting local non-profits and offering the best products, education, credentialing, and service to their customers. On special days of the year, Killians opens their museum to the community. Founded by Emory’s son, Elmer, the museum houses antique cars, area history, and memorabilia.

A visit from Santa is one very special event that’s held each Christmas season.

This past December, customers recalled their childhood memories by bringing their own children and grandchildren to give Mr. Claus their list and, of course, provide a photo op for the family scrapbook.

Directions

Heat oven to 400º F. Line large sheet pan with parchment paper.

Place chicken legs on pan. Spread fennel, yellow onion, red onion, garlic and potatoes around and in between legs.

In small bowl, whisk together orange juice and zest, thyme and olive oil. Pour mixture over chicken and vegetables. Season with salt and pepper.

Roast 45 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and vegetables are tender. Cook rice and quinoa.

Garnish chicken with parsley and orange curls. Serve over brown rice and quinoa.

Directions

Heat oven to 400º F. Line 13-by-18-inch sheet pan with parchment paper.

Place onion, cabbage, potatoes, squash and Brussels sprouts in single layer on pan. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast vegetables 40 minutes, or until tender.

Add more salt and pepper if needed.

While vegetables roast, cook quinoa.

Tahini sauce: In a small bowl, whisk

tahini, lemon juice, mustard and syrup until smooth.

Spoon quinoa into bowls. Add roasted veggies. Garnish with avocado and parsley. Drizzle with tahini sauce.

It’s Not Too Late

I was lying in bed one Sunday and as so often happens, I started thinking about everything I needed to do the following week: bake a cake for a work event, write an article for my website, renew my license plate…the list went on and on. This thought process eventually led me to take stock of where I was in life. I wasn’t intending to do so, but as I thought about “the big picture,” I also started thinking that I should do this more often.

I don’t know what sparked it, but I reflected on more than just where I was and where I wanted to be career-wise, which is what usually occupies my mind when I’m feeling introspective. I also started thinking about my day-to-day actions, and I felt a little disappointed.

When you’re rushing around from task to task, it’s really easy to forget about any sort of higher purpose. As I was 24

HICKORY LIVING • FEBRUARY 2018

taking stock of my life, I realized that I wasn’t exactly satisfied with how I’d been behaving lately. It’s not like I had suddenly devolved into a bad person or something, but I wasn’t as kind or as considerate as I’ve been in the past. In fact, I’d been a little self-centered and preoccupied in my recent interactions with others. I’ve been so busy with work and other commitments that I guess I lost sight of how important daily interactions with others are. I decided that when I woke up the next day, I’d make a conscious effort to be more aware of how I could be a better person.

I’m telling you all of this because I think that at some point or another, we all get caught up in the daily grind and forget that there’s more to life than just our seemingly never-ending to-do lists. I think we should all step back once in a while and reflect on how we’re doing.

Would you be proud to call yourself a friend, a spouse, a parent? You know deep down that you’re a good person and that you’re trying your best, but have your actions accurately reflected that lately? If not, it’s not too late to make a change.

Even if it’s not an overarching thing, maybe there’s a situation that you’ve been stewing about. Put on the hat of the observer, and try to look at your life from an outsider’s perspective, without biases. Maybe it’s time to tackle that issue or let it go…but intentionally make a choice. We all have the opportunity to hit the reset button. As human beings, we are always going to make mistakes, but there’s no time like the present to course correct and set sail on a smoother sea for the future.

A Good Investment

As in any county, we hear a lot of discussion about the economy in our area, for good reason. Without jobs and a thriving economy, people move away. When people move away, revenue goes down, and our county becomes less atractive to large and small businesses looking for a place to happen. Catawba County has had its share of hard times in that arena. However, one thing that our county has that we don’t hear enough about is our thriving arts and cultural scene.

Recently, the United Arts Council of Catawba County, under the guidance of Americans for the Arts, conducted a study to show the economic impact of the arts, sciences, and historical organizations in our community. What the study revealed was that our cultural community generates $49,200,000 annually in local economic activity. Yearly, cultural events bring in 349,909 visits from non-Catawba County residents–89.3% of those non-residents visit our county to specifically attend these events. Catawba County resident visits total 532,938 annually, and the average amount spent in the community–not including ticket revenue–is $41.56 per attendee.
